25 Best Things to Do in Ontario (CA)

When thinking of Southern California, what do you think of? Probably a mixture of Los Angeles, San Francisco and various coastal towns filled with Californians living their best lives and soaking up the sun. If I said Ontario, you’d probably think I was referring to the Canadian destination.

However, there is a spot on the map known as Ontario, Calif., and that spot prides itself on being “forty-five minutes from everywhere you want to be.” While it’s definitely great as a starting base for your other Californian adventures, there’s lots to do in the city of Ontario itself and the surrounding areas.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Ontario, California :

1. See Some Art

Chaffey Community Museum of Art

Every destination has its artists, and so every destination has some art to display.

The CCAA Museum of Art (which stands for Chaffey Community Museum of Art) is one of the oldest organizations in the area to support the local art scene.

You’ll see exhibits from nationally-recognized individuals, but also new offerings from those you aren’t familiar with.

2. Go Museum Hopping

Museum of History and Art

While you’re at the Chaffey Community Museum of Art, you might as well go museum hopping and head on over to the nearby Museum of History and Art, which collects, preserves and interprets the history of Ontario and the surrounding region with various educational exhibits and events throughout the year.

Housed in a gorgeously designed, historic building, the beauty of the attraction just starts with the exterior.

Though exhibits are always changing, there are a few permanent ones to take a look at.

Gem of the Foothills is an exhibit that promotes the unique history of the city, while Road Ways is one that explores how the advent of the modern roadway changed American society.

3. Eat Some Olives

Graber Olive House

If you think you have to travel all the way to the Mediterranean to taste some of the world’s finest olives, then you are sadly mistaken.

Pay a visit to the Graber Olive House, home of the renowned Graber Olives, produced and family-farmed since 1894. Locals say there’s absolutely nothing like it, and you’ll be wanting to pack your suitcase full of the tasty morsels, which are truly gourmet in flavor.

Additionally, Graber Olive House is Ontario’s oldest existing business.

Stop by for a guided tour, particularly during harvest time (Oct. -Dec.), when you can see firsthand all the grading, curing and canning that goes into a little jar of olives.

  • 4.  Get in Some Shopping

Ontario Mills

For some vacation shopping during your trip, go to Ontario Mills, where more than 24 million shoppers stop by each year, to explore the 1.5 million square feet of retail space, and the more than 200 stores, restaurants and venues.

You’ll find all your favorite designers, such as Lacoste, Calvin Klein and Michael Kors, but you can also stop by for fun family favorites, such as an improv comedy club and dinner theater, the Rainforest Cafe or Dave & Busters.

5. Get Some Sun

Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park

You can’t go to California and not take advantage of all the sunshine! The Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park is a great spot for a little outdoor fun, with 150 acres of recreational activities all within an easy and convenient setting.

There are two lakes on the property, so you can take your pick for fishing and boating, and there’s also a small waterpark for both thrill seekers looking for a great water slide, as well as children needing a small splash park.

There are also venues for holding group events.

6. Hit the Golf Course

Whispering Lakes Golf Course

Of course, if you’d rather play a few holes than splash around at the waterpark, you can go to Whispering Lakes Golf Course.

The 18-hole, par-72 course is owned by the city, and has just received a new remodel, with a brand-new clubhouse and more.

If you need to brush up on your skills, you can consult with the course’s PGA Head Golf Professional, Gary Nicholas, while there.

Overall, though the course is relatively easy on both your skills and your shoes, as the flat course means you can skip the golf cart and walk your way around.

7. Go Hiking

North Etiwanda Preserve

There’s no better place to hike in the area, than at the North Etiwanda Preserve.

The beautiful Californian flora and fauna surround you, as you take the 3.3-mile trail, which takes about two hours and is relatively easy, though there is some rocky terrain.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can head to Etiwanda Falls, which are located north of the main trail, going about a mile and a half from the parking lot trail head.

The Falls lie just outside the boundaries of the preserve, though, and you’ll have to cross some private property, but it’s not necessarily discouraged.

8. Treat Yourself

Glen Ivy Hot Springs

Just a short drive away is Glen Ivy Hot Springs, where you can enjoy a beautiful setting and a top-rate spa experience.

The hot springs have been around for a very long time, and the ground the spa rests on was once a sacred site.

Glen Ivy Hot Springs is now in its 157th year, and has unveiled great new renovations and expansions.

The new saunas that were just added are not to be missed, as they’re made either from Aspen or Canadian Hemlock woods, each offering a different experience (try both!).

9. Visit a Botanical Garden

Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden

The Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden is just about 15 minutes outside of town, and is the largest botanic garden dedicated to California native plants.

It’s considered a living museum and you’ll love learning about all of the fauna that exists within.

You can see seasonal plant displays, explore all of the plant collections and even try hands-on activities or take a class.

You may want to coincide your visit with one of the horticultural or botany classes, or stop by for a free bird walk, held the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month.

10. Dine in History

Sycamore Inn

You have to eat, so why not make it an experience? Head to the Sycamore Inn and see where a dirt trail led Spanish explorer Captain Juan Batista de Anza to the site of the inn, where he and his men would live with local natives for a short time.

One of the original soldiers would decide to stick around, and a small community began to form, with large homes, vineyards and more.

The dirt trail became a main path, and eventually, an inn was established there, before the beginning of the Civil War.

It became a meeting spot for many, particularly Southern sympathizers, and the inn would live on, passing through various hands and ownership, before becoming what it is today.

11. See an Arena Show

Citizens Business Bank Arena

The Citizens Business Bank Arena is home to a host of shows that occur over the year, and there’s something to fit every taste.

Snag tickets for an indoor football arena show, go to a concert (several upcoming performances include Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Skillet, Britt Nicole and more). You can also see preseason basketball games, and even professional bull riders.

There’s a little bit of everything.

12. Shop in the Sun

Victoria Gardens

If you don’t want to head to a drab indoor mall for your shopping while on vacation, go to Victoria Gardens, the pedestrian-friendly, open-air shopping center, that still has all of your favorite stores, in one convenient location.

Catch your big-name stores like Macy’s and Bass Pro Shop, but also get all your normal mall boutqiues, like bebe, Lush and Kiehl’s.

There are also tons of dining options to choose from, whether you want a quick snack, a budget-friendly meal or something a little more decadent.

13. Take Flight!

Planes of Fame Air Museum

The Planes of Fame Air Museum is a local favorite for aviation history, and if you have an avgeek in your family, they’ll be thrilled to visit.

There are more than 150 aircraft at the museum, and there are 50 that can still hit the skies today! You’ll see fighter planes from World War II, and even a 1903 Wright Flyer.

If you come on the right day, you may even get to see an air show.

They have Living History Flying Days just about every month of the year, and then they have their big Planes of Fame Airshow in May.

14. Take a Stroll

Euclid Avenue

If you find that you’re in the mood for a casual walk around town after dinner or in the morning, you’ll want to be sure your feet lead you to the historic Euclid Avenue.

There are tons of building styles to observe, including art deco, Victorian and even Googie architecture.

Nearly every home represents a different era and a different architecture style, all within a beautiful setting that you’ll find to be picture-perfect.

So what are you waiting for? Slip on your sneakers, grab your camera and go for a walk!

15. See the Historic John Rains House

John Rains House

This home, which is currently on the National Register of Historic Places, is a historic house museum for several reasons.

Built in 1860, it was very innovative, as it featured its own cooling system, using creek water, and was home to a prominent Californian businessman, who opened the state’s first commercial winery.

The house and owners hosted many important parties, and there were quite a few powerful faces that made their presence known there.

Unfortunately, the businessman who owned the home was murdered, and his widow was forced to give up the property.

16. Or See a Different Kind of Historic Place

Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation

Also on the National Register of Historic Places, the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation doesn’t quite have the same kind of dramatic history.

Maloof was a highly-respected furniture maker, and his rocking chairs actually received recognition from several U.S. presidents.

His home was hand built by him and his assistants, and every part of it shows off his love for woodworking.

When highway construction threatened to tear down the home, it was placed on the National Register for protection throughout the future.

You can experience a docent-led tour of the house, and also see a small exhibit center and the gardens, which feature both native and Mediterranean plants.

17. View the Madonna of the Trail

Madonna of the Trail

The Madonna of the Trail in this area of the country is just one of 12 monuments that were commissioned and placed around the country as a dedication to the hardy spirit of the pioneer woman.

These monuments are placed along the National Old Trails Road, starting in Maryland.

Placed where they now stand in the 1920s, they’ve been very well maintained thanks to local efforts, and an overall feeling of pride in the legacies of the women for whom the monument stands.

18. Get Your Heart Pumping

K1 Speed Ontario

Get behind the wheel of a go-kart like no other at K1 Speed Ontario.

With options for both novice and experienced drivers, you can enjoy real, authentic racing like you will nowhere else.

You’ll be hitting the track in a state-of-the-art kart in a modern venue, for a totally high-performance experience.

Races start at just $20 and the track is open until the wee hours of the morning on the weekend, so you can head there at nearly any time!

19. Ride Some Rides

Scandia

Disneyland is a very crowded and time-consuming drive from Ontario, though many people in Ontario do make the trip.

If that doesn’t sound like your style or speed, go to Scandia, a more local, easier-to-access park that, while no Disneyland, is still fun for the entire family.

This is more like your fair atmosphere, so the rides are small, but it all makes for great memories.

Try the Scandia Screamer, the Swedish Swing or the Viking Ship! Rides not your thing? Try the miniature golf, or the batting cages.

It’s all in one spot, and all with a Scandinavian theme!

20. Sip Some Wine

San Antonio Winery

The San Antonio Winery has been around since 1917, though it started out in downtown Los Angeles.

Now, the winery has branched out, and you can find a location in Ontario.

The Ontario tasting room has been there for more than 40 years, and you’ll taste an assortment of wines.

The Daily Artisan Series is a great value, featuring four highly limited reserve wines, for $15. And you get to take home the wine glass, as a cool souvenir! Just remember, if your party is more than six people, you have to call ahead.

21. Head to the Farm

Amy’s Farm

Amy’s Farm offers tours of their gorgeous rural setting, if you make a reservation in advance.

You’ll enjoy a garden walk, harvest your own herbs and veggies, feed the farm animals, visit the petting zoo and even milk a cow! It’s a great treat for the kids, and an excuse to be outside in the fresh air, and maybe see a few animals up close and personal that you wouldn’t encounter in your daily life.

While you’re there, pick up some produce and, if you’re there in the fall, pick your own pumpkin from the pumpkin patch!

22. Be a Kid Again

LOL Kids Club

While you probably can’t show up by yourself, you can definitely take the kids to LOL Kids Club for lots of laughs and a day well remembered.

There are tons of ball pits, things to climb on, jump off of, swing on, run around…basically just be a kid! There’s also a cafe on site, so you don’t even have to pack a lunch!

23. Let Loose

Sixth Street Bar & Grill

After the kids have their day of play, mom and dad should go out on the town to Sixth Street Bar & Grill.

There’s great food, great drinks and plenty of live music.

You can hit the dance floor and shake it to some Bachata or Country, or if you show up on a Wednesday, you can even belt out your favorite tunes.

That’s right, this bar has karaoke, so you know you’ll want to pick a song in advance and get several shots under your belt.

The prices are also very budget-friendly, so your buck will go a little bit further.

24. Solve a Crime

Murder-Mystery Dinner

Maybe your idea of the perfect dinner date while on vacation doesn’t include listening to tipsy American Idol-wannabes on the karaoke machine, and we get that.

Maybe solving a mystery is more your style.

The largest interactive murder mystery comedy dinner show in the U.S. and the best-voted dinner show in Los Angeles is available at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Ontario.

These actors have appeared in TV and film, as well as professional theater, and they’ve gotten improv down to a science, ensuring you receive a totally unique experience.

25. Cheer for the Ontario Reign!

Ontario Reign

You may not put California together with hockey, but that doesn’t stop Ontario from having its very own minor league hockey team.

Catch a game if you’re in town during the season!

ONTARIO MUSEUM OF HISTORY & ART REVIEWS

This place is a really cool little piece of history. Living in this city for my whole life, I never really knew much about it. After coming here and eventually volunteering here, I have come to know my city and its surrounding city very well. There is free admission here, so if you are looking for a cool spot for a cool day of history, this is it.
Nice Local Museum, lots of cool Historical information regarding the Western Inland Empire and San Bernardino county, spent about 45 mins there, it’s free, would definitely recommend for couples and children.
It’s a relatively small space, but they have beautifully detailed exhibits and really make an effort to include local community involvement.

PLANES OF FAME AIR MUSEUM REVIEWS

What a fantastic museum! People of all ages will have plenty of fun here for at least half a day. There is quite a lot to see, spanning multiple hangars and a large outdoor area between them. Sometimes on weekends they will even take a plane from their collection out to do a big talk about it and then fly it for everyone to see. There is plenty of parking, even if the lot fills up you can easily park on the street and not have too long of a walk to the museum.
This is one of the last air museums that focuses on maintaining vintage military aircraft that actually fly on a regular basis. The staff are highly experienced and knowledgeable, and the history of the physical museum goes back to the very beginnings of the idea of 'air museums', which gained popularity after WWII. The first Saturday of each month features a public discussion and flight demonstration of one of the museum's classic warbirds. I strongly urge anyone interested in this type of history to visit the Planes of Fame Museum. There, you will find much to learn.
Nice little museum. Great people and culture here. As a korean. Also loved the korean war memorial. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all those medal of honor recipients. Respect and honor to all who died for south korea be free.

How to see tonight's northern lights – the strongest in 20 years

A rare geomagnetic storm not seen for nearly 20 years could cause a stunning aurora borealis on 10 and 11 May

By Leah Crane

10 May 2024

the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern lights, putting on a show over Achmelvich beach, Sutherland, in the Highlands of Scotland, UK.

People across the UK and US may glimpse a special light show tonight

The aurora borealis, or northern lights, are expected to be more active than they have in decades the evening of 10 May, according to an announcement by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). They could be visible as far south as Alabama in the US and Scotland in the UK. This marks the first severe geomagnetic storm watch from NOAA since 2005.

This shimmering green, purple and red glow in the sky occurs when charged particles from the sun smash into Earth’s atmosphere. The sun emitted several huge plumes of particles, called coronal mass ejections (CMEs) between 8 and 9 May, and they are expected to reach Earth on 10 and 11 May.

The multiverse could be much, much bigger than we ever imagined

A new way of interpreting the elusive mathematics of quantum mechanics could fundamentally change our understanding of reality

When these particles reach Earth, many of them are deflected by the planet’s magnetic field. But the field is weaker around the poles, so some of them manage to sneak in and hit the atmosphere, where they impart energy to its constituent gas molecules. When these molecules re-emit the energy, it comes out as the light that we see as the aurora . The colour of the aurora depends on what type of gas was hit and where in the atmosphere it is located – green, the most common colour, comes from oxygen molecules around 120 to 180 kilometres up in the air.

The more powerful the CME, the more particles sneak into the atmosphere and the brighter and bigger the aurora is. The CMEs that just blasted off the sun are more powerful than any that have hit Earth since January 2005. Solar storms this powerful can even disrupt satellites and the electrical grid by releasing powerful currents that may damage their components.

To see the aurora, you need to be as far as possible from any major light pollution – it can be impossible to spot even an incredibly powerful aurora from urban locations. Once away from city lights, let your eyes adjust to the darkness and look to the northern sky.

In the US, people may see the aurora by late 10 May or early 11 May over most of the northern half of the country, and potentially as far south as Alabama to northern California, according to NOAA. As for the UK, the Met Office predicts it will be visible across the northern half of the country toward the end of 10 May or early 11 May – but there is a chance the entire country could glimpse it.

Auroras may appear in photographs as bright, shimmering sheets of light , but to the human eye, without the power of a long exposure time, they tend to look more like a faint, shifting green glow. For those that live outside of the Arctic Circle, this may be the clearest auroral show in 19 years.

Solar Storm Intensifies, Filling Skies With Northern Lights

Officials warned of potential blackouts or interference with navigation and communication systems this weekend, as well as auroras as far south as Southern California or Texas.

By Katrina Miller and Judson Jones

Katrina Miller reports on space and astronomy and Judson Jones is a meteorologist.

A dramatic blast from the sun set off the highest level geomagnetic storm in Earth’s atmosphere on Friday that is expected to make the northern lights visible as far south as Florida and Southern California and could interfere with power grids, communications and navigations system.

Tonight’s storm is the strongest to reach Earth since Halloween of 2003. That storm was strong enough to create power outages in Sweden and damage transformers in South Africa.

The effects could continue through the weekend as a steady stream of emissions from the sun continues to bombard the planet’s magnetic field.

The solar activity is so powerful that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which monitors space weather, issued an unusual storm watch on Thursday for the first time in 19 years, which was then upgraded to a warning on Friday. The agency began observing outbursts on the sun’s surface on Wednesday, with at least five heading in the direction of Earth, the first of which reached the planet’s atmosphere on Friday.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday morning.

For people in many places, the most visible part of the storm will be the northern lights, known also as auroras. But authorities and companies will also be on the lookout for the event’s effects on infrastructure, like global positioning systems, radio communications and even electrical power.

While the northern lights are most often seen in higher latitudes closer to the North Pole, people in many more parts of the world are already getting a show this weekend that could last through the early part of next week.

Windmills against skies glowing pink, purple and green.

As Friday turned to Saturday in Europe, people across the continent described skies hued in a mottling of colors.

Alfredo Carpineti , an astrophysicist, journalist and author in North London, saw them with his husband from the rooftop of their apartment building.

“It is incredible to able to see the aurora directly from one’s own backyard,” he said. “I was hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of green on the horizon, but it was all across the sky in both green and purple.”

Here’s what you need to know about this weekend’s solar event.

How will the storm affect people on Earth?

A geomagnetic storm watch or warning indicates that space weather may affect critical infrastructure on or orbiting near Earth. It may introduce additional current into systems, which could damage pipelines, railroad tracks and power lines.

According to Joe Llama, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, communications that rely on high frequency radio waves, such as ham radio and commercial aviation , are most likely to suffer. That means it is unlikely that your cellphone or car radio, which depend on low frequency radio waves, will conk out.

Still, it is possible for blackouts to occur. As with any power outage, you can prepare by keeping your devices charged and having access to backup batteries, generators and radio.

The most notable solar storm recorded in history occurred in 1859. Known as the Carrington Event, it lasted for nearly a week, creating aurora that stretched down to Hawaii and Central America and impacting hundreds of thousands of miles of telegraph lines.

But that was technology of the 19th century, used before scientists fully understood how solar activity disrupted Earth’s atmosphere and communication systems.

“That was an extreme level event,” said Shawn Dahl, a forecaster at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. “We are not anticipating that.”

Unlike tornado watches and warnings, the target audience for NOAA’s announcements is not the public.

“For most people here on planet Earth, they won’t have to do anything,” said Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

The goal of the announcements is to give agencies and companies that operate this infrastructure time to put protection measures in place to mitigate any effects.

“If everything is working like it should, the grid will be stable and they’ll be able to go about their daily lives,” Mr. Steenburgh said.

Will I be able to see the northern lights?

It is possible that the northern lights may grace the skies over places that don’t usually see them this weekend. Your best bet to see them is in a place outside the bright lights of cities.

But Friday night could pose weather struggles in some places. The Northeast is likely to be blanketed in clouds.

There is a chance the skies may cooperate in the Midwest, but the hour would be closer to sunrise on Saturday. A storm system will be moving through the region, and if it swings through, there will be clear skies behind the storms. Your ability to catch a view will depend on your location and the exact timing of the storm system.

If the aurora reaches as far south as Alabama, which may happen this weekend, night skies will be relatively clear in northern Alabama and Georgia. Areas in the southern Plains and Rockies might have relatively poor viewing conditions.

Farther west, the coastal states will remain relatively cloud-free, which could provide good viewing conditions. There may be high-level clouds in the mountains of Washington, but there is still a chance of clear skies.

If you are in a clear area, even well south of where the aurora is forecast to take place, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone. The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Another opportunity could be viewing sunspots during the daytime, if your skies are clear. As always, do not look directly at the sun without protection. But if you still have your eclipse glasses lying around from the April 8 event, you may try to use them to try to spot the cluster of sunspots causing the activity.

How strong is the current geomagnetic storm?

Giant explosions on the surface of the sun, known as coronal mass ejections, send streams of energetic particles into space. But the sun is large, and such outbursts may not cross our planet as it travels around the star. But when these particles create a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field, it is known as a geomagnetic storm.

NOAA classifies these storms on a “G” scale of 1 to 5, with G1 being minor and G5 being extreme. The most extreme storms can cause widespread blackouts and damage to infrastructure on Earth. Satellites may also have trouble orienting themselves or sending or receiving information during these events.

The current storm is classified as G5, or “extreme.” It is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface — that is about 16 times the diameter of Earth. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours, with the most recent activity occurring around 3 a.m. Eastern time on Friday.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Why is this happening now?

The sun’s activity ebbs and flows on an 11-year cycle, and right now, it is approaching a solar maximum. Three other severe geomagnetic storms have been observed so far in the current activity cycle, which began in December 2019, but none were predicted to cause effects strong enough on Earth to warrant a watch or warning announcement.

The cluster of sunspots generating the current storm is the largest seen in this solar cycle, NOAA officials said. They added that the activity in this cycle has outperformed initial predictions .

More flares and expulsions from this cluster are expected, but because of the sun’s rotation the cluster will be oriented in a position less likely to affect Earth. In the coming weeks, the sunspots may appear again on the left side of the sun, but it is difficult for scientists to predict whether this will cause another bout of activity.

“Usually, these don’t come around packing as much of a punch as they did originally,” Mr. Dahl said. “But time will tell on that.”

Jonathan O’Callaghan contributed reporting from London.

Aurora Borealis could be in view in Toronto tonight. Here’s how a solar storm is making that possible

The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis , is expected to illuminate the sky in Canada tonight, including in Toronto, thanks to a rare and severe solar storm.

“Even Toronto is actually inside the predicted viewing area for aurora for tonight,” York University Astronomy Professor Elaina Hyde said early Friday evening.

A burst of material exploded off the sun on Thursday, triggering a severe geomagnetic storm that hasn’t taken place to this degree in almost 20 years.

“What happens is, if you can imagine a stream of charged particles flying towards the Earth. It hits earth’s magnetic field and the magnetic field funnels those particles towards the north and south poles and they interact with the atmosphere, which is when you see the northern lights,” Hyde explained.

Usually, she said the lights are only in view near the poles, but in this case, more particles are hitting Earth’s magnetic field and the activity is spreading to places that typically don’t see the notorious lightshow.

This particular storm is so severe that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NCAA) declared it a G4, the second highest level given to solar storms , which hasn’t taken place since 2005.

The current solar cycle has only had three severe geomagnetic storms, with one in 2003 resulting in power outages in Sweden and damaged power transformers in South Africa.

Already, Hyde said the solar storm coming our way has caused outages in Europe and the chances of power or communications outages in other parts of the world is even higher than expected.

“[I’d] recommend folks to just take some cautions for possible power outages,” Hyde said.

The upside of the outage is it’s generated by the same impact of material on the earth’s magnetic field as the northern lights, Hyde explained. “It means we actually have a chance to view it.”

The best viewing times are location-dependent. In Ontario and Quebec, the prime timeslot is between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. In Alberta, it’s 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. and in British Columbia, it’s 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Light pollution and cloudy skies can wash out a clear view of the northern lights, so Hyde recommends a dark corner of a park or leaving the city, if possible.

“A lot of people at lower latitudes will have never seen an aurora before, so this would be a great time tonight,” Hyde said.

Extreme geomagnetic storm may spark widespread auroras over Canada on Friday

Digital Writers

Fingers crossed for clear conditions Friday night as the potential grows for widespread auroras across Canada

Widespread auroras are possible across most of Canada and a large swath of the U.S. on Friday night as forecasters expect an extreme geomagnetic storm to kick off the weekend.

Update (9:00 p.m. EDT)

According to NOAA SWPC, G5 (severe) geomagnetic storm levels began at around 6:54 p.m. EDT on Friday, about six hours after the sudden (and apparently early) arrival of the solar storm at G4 intensity. This is now the strongest geomagnetic storm to hit Earth since Halloween 2003.

SWPC forecasters are expecting severe geomagnetic activity to continue for some time this weekend.

According to Space Weather Canada , both the Auroral and Sub-Auroral zones are experiencing major storm conditions at the time of this update. They have issued a major storm watch for both regions for Friday night.

NRCan-Space-Weather-Conditions-Forecast-May102024

(Space Weather Canada/Natural Resources Canada)

With the geomagnetic storm beginning much earlier than originally forecast, most of the auroras will be first seen across northern Russia and Europe. Canadians will need to wait until the Sun sets before we have our chance to see them, however they may be visible across the entire country, depending on sky conditions at the time.

The original story continues below...

This event ranks as a ‘severe’ G4 on the scale used to measure the intensity of geomagnetic storms. The scale ranges from from G1 (minor) on the low end to G5 (extreme) on the high end.

Forecasters with NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) issued a geomagnetic storm watch ahead of the event, saying on Friday that “watches at this level are very rare.” This is the first G4-level watch issued by the agency since January 2005 .

DON'T MISS: From auroras to eclipses, clouds aren’t a stargazing deal breaker

Expected to arrive late Friday night

Our weekend aurora potential is the result of three separate coronal mass ejections (CMEs) merging into one as they approach Earth. A CME is a burst of plasma and magnetic field released from the Sun’s blazing hot outer atmosphere.

May 10 2024 Aurora CMEs

The charged particles of a CME can filter into Earth’s upper atmosphere around the magnetic poles, ionizing gasses like oxygen and hydrogen to create the phenomenal display of dancing colours we see as the northern lights.

The SWPC expects the geomagnetic storm to peak late Friday night into very early Saturday morning, with the strongest aurora potential around 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Eastern Time, or 8:00 p.m. to 02:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

Baron - Aurora timing updated - May10

Any change in this geomagnetic storm’s arrival time would affect Canada’s viewing. An earlier arrival might favour Europe over Canada, while a later arrival might allow for more widespread viewing opportunities across the country.

A geomagnetic storm of this caliber could produce visible auroras far south of the border, as well. NOAA says that the northern lights could be visible as far south as Alabama and northern California if the event peaks at the right time.

Clouds may obscure the view for some regions

Sunlight is only part of the equation when it comes to spotting the northern lights. Where might clouds obscure the view?

May 10 2024 Aurora Eastern Canada Clouds

The latest forecast for Friday night paints a mixed picture across the country. Cloud cover may obscure the view for parts of the East Coast, including for folks in St. John's and Halifax .

A decent chance for plenty of clear skies could allow fantastic viewing for a wide swath of Quebec, including the Montreal area, as well as much of southern Ontario. You’ll want to get away from the bright lights of the Greater Toronto Area's for the best chance at seeing colours dance in the night sky.

Farther west, aurora watchers may find luck between patchy clouds expected to blanket northern Ontario and portions of Manitoba.

May 10 2024 Aurora Western Canada Clouds

The best opportunity for clear skies exists on the western Prairies and into British Columbia. Folks around Regina , Saskatoon, Edmonton , and Calgary may catch a good show if this geomagnetic storm lives up to its full potential. Clear skies throughout B.C. may offer a good view if the northern lights arrive after sunset and twilight.

WATCH: How to find the best aurora borealis spotting sites near you

Aurora potential increases as solar maximum arrives.

We’re approaching the maximum of Solar Cycle 25 , a period during which solar flare and sunspot activity increases—along with more opportunities for CMEs that may produce auroras.

Auroras Geomagnetic Storm Kp Index

Experts rate the intensity of geomagnetic activity on the Kp Index, which ranges from Kp 0 on the low end to Kp 9 on the high end. Values around Kp 7 are sufficient for nationwide aurora visibility.

MUST SEE: Solar max is approaching. Here’s where and how to see the Northern Lights

Several geomagnetic storms since late last year have produced widely viewed auroras in the Northern Hemisphere, including a G3 (strong) storm in November that made the northern lights visible as far south as Virginia and Ukraine .

Auroras aren’t the only effects of a geomagnetic storm. The surge of charged particles into the atmosphere can cause radio blackouts and GPS disruptions. The strongest geomagnetic storms can even threaten power grids .

WATCH: A new solar cycle began in 2020. Here’s what it means for us

This May long weekend will feel less like summer and more like true May
