15 Best Day Trips from Christchurch

As the largest city in New Zealand’s South Island, Christchurch acts as a gateway to some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

Having suffered a major earthquake in 2010 and 2011, the city is still regenerating. A lot of the damage remains today, with seemingly endless construction works and a destroyed church right in the city center. Nevertheless, Christchurch natives have managed to turn the disaster around to help build community spirit in the city.

You can learn all about the impact on local lives – as well as the geology behind the earthquakes – whilst in town. This makes for a very surprising addition to any New Zealand itinerary.

If you opt to stay in Christchurch for a while, there are some excellent day trips that can be taken within a few hours to other destinations across the South Island.

Though most people visit for the natural beauty, you can also experience rural New Zealand life and adrenaline sports in many of the destinations.

Here are the 15 best day trips within reasonable traveling distance from Christchurch.

1. Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula

Akaroa , New Zealand

Akaroa is a small town located on the Banks Peninsula, which is just out of the South Island just east of Christchurch. In the town itself, you can embed yourself in local Kiwi culture – learning all about the history of the islands, as well as sampling the famous New Zealand coffee and pies.

The harbor town is also home to native wildlife, including rare Hector’s dolphins and unique birdlife. The rest of the peninsula is great for exploring the dramatic scenery and learning about New Zealand’s conservation efforts across the country.

2. TranzAlpine Train

TranzAlpine Train

The TranzAlpine Train connects Christchurch with Greymouth and you can easily organize a return as part of a day trip. They cross through the Southern Alps – the area of New Zealand with the most breathtaking scenery, which has been shaped by seismic activity for centuries.

You will be able to take in astounding views over the mountains and lakes and see some of the spots used for filming in the Lord of the Rings movie franchise. The most famous site across the route is Arthur’s Pass, affording the most dramatic views available on the island.

3. Kaikoura

Kaikoura, New Zealand

Kaikoura is a popular stop-off point for visitors to the South Island but makes a unique day trip in its own right.

Cut off from Christchurch by earthquakes in 2016, the road into the town has recently been restored, making it much easier to visit. Here, you can sample some of New Zealand’s finest seafood, as well as take in rural Kiwi culture at its finest.

There are popular boat trips from the town that allow you to discover dolphins and whales, and a short drive along the coast will reveal a large seal colony. If you visit just after mating season, you can also get up close with baby seals from the colony.

4. Aoraki Mount Cook National Park

Aoraki Mount Cook National Park

Mount Cook (known as Aoraki in Maori) is New Zealand’s tallest mountain, and the surrounding national park has some great hiking options as well as a breathtaking view over Lake Pukaki.

During the winter, there are some excellent skiing opportunities within the region; in the summer, you can enjoy kayaking in the clear, glacial waters of the lake.

If you are interested in conservation, there are plenty of centers in the area that give great presentations on how New Zealand is preserving its natural history.

5. Queenstown

Queenstown, New Zealand

The most popular destination in the South Island, Queenstown is a little further afield than other options, so we suggest taking an organized tour if you are planning a day trip to make sure the timing is right.

This is the adrenaline capital of New Zealand, with one of the most famous bungee jumps in the world located in Shotover Canyon.

The Tiki Trail is a hiking and mountain biking track that takes you halfway up Ben Lomond to the Skyline Queenstown area, where you can try out the luge or just experience the best view over the city. There is also a cable car available for an easier ride.

6. Hanmer Springs

Hanmer Springs

New Zealand is well known for its seismic activity, and this has allowed some excellent hot springs to appear across the country.

The most famous are located on the North Island; however, Hanmer Springs is an excellent option away from the crowds of the other natural springs – and is arguably the best spa town on the South Island.

There are plenty of mountain biking tracks around the town, as well as hiking trails, where you will be rewarded with excellent views over the surrounding forests and mountains. In winter, it is a great place for skiing, snowboarding and ice-skating.

Tekapo, New Zealand

Located on the shore of Lake Tekapo, this area is often overlooked by tourists for the neighboring Mount Cook National Park, however, has some great secluded hiking trails and a very relaxed atmosphere within the main town.

Mount John is an excellent hiking trail, with a glass-walled café at the top for you to admire the views over the lake with a typical Kiwi flat white in hand.

There is also the Mount John observatory – infamous for being the observatory that downgraded Pluto from its status as a planet. You can learn all about space exploration and how New Zealand has influenced discoveries over the past few decades.

8. Greymouth

Shantytown Heritage Park

If you opt to save money and drive through the Southern Alps rather than take the train, Greymouth is an interesting endpoint.

Its industrial history means many tourists do not take the time to explore the town, but there are still some great sites to be found. Shantytown Heritage Park is a recreated gold rush village.

The West Coast of the South saw some of the main gold mining activity in the country, and the impact of this gold rush can still be seen in the region to this day. At Shantytown, you can learn all about this section of New Zealand history.

9. Hokitika

Hokitika

Also located on the West Coast, Hokitika is a quaint town full of typical New Zealand culture.

It is the modern hub for jade products – known locally as greenstone – which is the most common material used for carving Maori pounamu. You can learn about the precious stone in one of the many stores and centers across the town, as well as get the opportunity to carve your own pounamu.

The National Kiwi Centre is also a fun place to try and spot a native Kiwi bird, as well as learn about the other unique animals found across both islands.

Timaru, New Zealand

Only a short drive away from Christchurch, Timaru (known as Timaz by locals) is a short departure from the dramatic scenery the South Island is most known for, and is instead a much better destination for checking out rural Kiwi culture.

Typical Kiwi cafés, filled with award-winning pies, are spread across the town, and there are many Kiwiana shops for you to pick up some souvenirs to take back home. The town is also an artistic hub, with locally owned galleries and cool sculptures throughout the town center.

11. Marlborough

Marlborough, New Zealand

Thanks to the ferries from Wellington, Marlborough is another gateway to the South Island for visitors who opt to sail rather than fly.

The region is filled with beautiful vineyards – particularly near Wairau and Awatere – where you can experience some of the most famous wine in the world. Most of the wineries offer tours and tasting experiences.

The Marlborough Sounds are also packed with natural beauty and are somewhat quieter than the more famous fjords of Southland.

Bird enthusiasts will enjoy discovering some of the most unique species in the world in the region, with excellent birdwatching spots dotted around the area.

Oamaru, New Zealand

Another cute little town located south of Christchurch, Oamaru is an excellent place to spot Little Blue Penguins. These penguins are native to the southern half of the South Island; this is the closest you can get to them in person.

Oamaru is an excellent place to check out some of New Zealand’s oldest colonial architecture, inspired by the Edwardian architecture of the United Kingdom.

The town also serves as a hub for helicopter tours, which take guests on a sightseeing tour over the Otago region, as well as some of Canterbury.

13. Dunedin

Dunedin Railway Station, New Zealand

This cool little town is off the radar for many tourists but absolutely should not be missed.

It is a bit of a longer journey, so leave early or consider an organized tour. Nevertheless, it is worth the trip and most of the main sites can be covered in a day. The town is modeled on Edinburgh in Scotland, with many of the street names taken from the city.

This has resulted in incredibly unique street layouts, with the world’s steepest street located in the city. There is a great street art scene that not only encapsulates traditional graffiti and murals but also painted public benches and sculptures.

If you are visiting in May, aim to be in town for the Jaffa Race – where locals throw the small orange sweets down the hill to raise money for charity.

14. Punakaiki

Punakaki Pancake Rocks in Paparoa National Park, West Coast, South Island, New Zealand

Punakaiki is the entrance point to Paparoa National Park – a lush and vibrant area of the country with plenty of native wildlife and plant species.

The most famous site is the pancake rocks – piles of flat rocks which resemble enormous stacks of pancakes. There are also blowholes in the same area, where you can experience the true power of the Tasman Sea and how it interacts with the New Zealand coastline.

If you enjoy horse riding, there are popular treks stemming from the town and horses are available to hire.

15. Geraldine

Geraldine, New Zealand

Also a little off the tourist trail, Geraldine is full of surprises and is a true culmination of all the best parts of the South Island.

Located in the Canterbury plains, the town has incredible views of the Southern Alps. You can check out some of the largest sheep farms in the country and learn all about local history and culture.

Be sure to check out some of the independent art galleries and pieces of street art that really add a sense of vibrancy to the town. You can even purchase some local handicrafts, which make much more unique gifts than the usual Kiwiana from tourist stores.

18 AWESOME Things to Do in Christchurch (2024 Guide)

Alesha and Jarryd

  • Last Updated: April 10, 2024

From jet boating and skydiving to going on a Lord of the Rings tour, here’s our list of the best things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand!

Christchurch is one of the largest cities in New Zealand and one of its greatest tourist destinations.

No matter what you’re looking for in a vacation spot, you can find it here. It’s an exceedingly diverse city with beautiful natural surroundings, a thriving art scene, and many exciting things to see and do.

Christchurch is also a bit of a thrill seeker’s paradise. The natural beauty of the Southern Alps and the Pacific Ocean lend itself well to adventurous activities.

The recent earthquakes that struck the city centre may have damaged many of the buildings, but they didn’t damage the spirit of the Kiwis, who have rebuilt proudly.

While many travelers may opt to skip Christchurch for some of the more popular South Island destinations such as Queenstown , those that stay here for a few days quickly fall in love with its energetic atmosphere.

Godley Head

Table of Contents

1) Do a Walking Tour with the Legends at Green Kiwi Tours

2) go hiking at godley head, 3) go jet boating, 4) visit the christchurch botanic gardens and new regent street, 5) go skydiving, 6) have a blast at christchurch adventure park, 7) take a day trip to the banks peninsula, 8) visit the canterbury earthquake national memorial, 9) go bungee jumping, 10) visit the international antarctic centre, 11) fly a helicopter, 12) see the brockworth street art gallery, 13) go on a lord of the rings tour, 14) take a christchurch gondola ride, 15) swim with the dolphins, 16) go rafting, 17) check out the world buskers festival, 18) enjoy the ko tane maori experience, our list of the best things to do in christchurch.

You can find a whole range of awesome adventure activities in Christchurch, from jet boating, bungee jumping, skydiving, and more.

However, the city also offers many opportunities to simply relax and enjoy yourself. There are numerous parks and waterfront paths along the Avon River.

You can wander around in its award-winning Christchurch Botanic Gardens or pay your respects at the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial. New Regent Street is downtown has lots of great shops and restaurants.

Or you can enjoy a day with your kids at the International Antarctic Centre.

These are just a few of the things that Christchurch has to offer.

So let’s take a closer look at some of the adventures that await you in this marvellous city.

The best way to get to know a city is to explore it with a local, and at the end of 2019 a new company has started up that offers fantastic tours for visitors that should be the absolute first thing you do when you arrive.

Green Kiwi Tours is a locally owned and operated business by Simon Bowie, an enthusiastic guy from Christchurch.

Having spent many years travelling around New Zealand as a professional tour guide, he has taken his experience of giving tourists the best experience possible and brought it to his hometown.

His new company offers free walking tours (you choose how much you’d like to tip at the end) to all of Christchurch’s main attractions.

You’ll check out the old and new cathedrals, the 185 Chairs Memorial, Bridge of Remembrance, Canterbury Museum, and plenty more hidden spots along the way.

Simon is hilarious, knowledgable and loves his city, so you’re in good hands when exploring Christchurch. He also offers a craft beer tour and private tours.

We personally know Simon from doing a snowboarding tour around New Zealand where he was our guide, so we can vouch for his professionalism and passion.

Tell him the guys from NOMADasaurus sent you when you sign up for his Free Christchurch Walking Tour!

There are many great hiking trails in Christchurch, but none are quite as spectacular as the one you’ll find at Godley Head.

Not only does it do a great job of showcasing New Zealand’s natural beauty, but it also has a lot of history behind it.

It once served as a coastal defense during WW2, which will certainly be of interest to any history buffs out there.

This trail starts at Taylor Mistake Beach near Sumner Beach, which is an excellent attraction in itself.

During your hike, you’re likely to see some wildlife during the hike, including penguins, dolphins, or even whales in the Pacific Ocean.

This is an astounding trail overall and is one of the best things to do in Christchurch.

Godley Head Hiking

Believe it or not, the jet boat was actually invented in New Zealand, and what better place to experience it than right here in town!

It’s one of the most exciting things to do in Christchurch and one of the most fun ways to enjoy the beautiful Waimakariri River.

You’ll be riding down the river at breakneck speed while experiencing 360-degree spins and hairpin turns.

You have the option of choosing a 30-minute ride or a sixty-minute ride.

The 30-minute tour offers a ride on the Waimakariri River while the 60-minute tours provide two additional options.

One takes you to the Waimakariri Gorge where you can enjoy gorgeous views of the Southern Alps.

The other takes you on a safari to the upper Waimakariri Gorge to places that can’t be reached in any other way.

It’s part of the culture here and the Christchurch sightseeing experience isn’t complete without having a go on the jet boat!

The best operator for jet boating in Christchurch is Alpine Jet Thrills .

This is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Christchurch city.

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are over 150 years old and consist of 21 hectares. There are ten gardens in all, many of which contain rare and exotic plant species from all over the world.

Their rose garden in particular features 250 different kinds of roses.

In addition to its vast collection of plants, the Botanic Gardens also provide fantastic bird watching opportunities, especially during the spring.

There’s also a gift shop and a cafe, and better yet, entry to the Botanic Gardens is completely free.

It’s located inside Hagley Park next to the Avon River and is one of the truly beautiful Christchurch tourist attractions and a must-see for nature lovers.

Afterward, head over to the nearby Canterbury Museum or walk to New Regent Street for some food and shopping. Find out about more attractions on the website !

If you really want an adrenaline rush, then this is what you need to do.

Going skydiving is on the bucket list of many adventure seekers, and New Zealand is one of the best places to do it. The country’s natural beauty lends itself well to this activity.

When you go skydiving in Christchurch, you’ll be leaping out of a plane at a height of 12,000 feet.

Don’t worry, no previous experience is required. When you jump, you’ll be tandem diving with an experienced instructor.

Therefore, your safety is completely guaranteed.

You can simply enjoy the rush of falling through the air while enjoying the gorgeous scenery below you.

If you’re always waiting for your next adrenaline fix, this is one of the unmissable Christchurch attractions.

Tragically, Christchurch experienced a devastating earthquake on February 22, 2011 that took the lives of 185 people.

It also injured many others and left thousands of people without homes.

The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial exists to pay respect to those whose lives were impacted by this awful tragedy.

This is the place to go if you would like to honour their memory.

The memorial contains a wall with the names of everyone who lost their lives in the earthquake. It also acknowledges those who were seriously injured.

Its 185 empty chairs exhibit is one of the most somber things to see in the Canterbury Region.

This exhibit consists of 185 white, empty chairs to symbolize those who died in the quake.

Visit The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial

This is another one of the most exciting things to do in Christchurch.

Bungee Jumping has a long history in New Zealand. They practically pioneered this activity which makes it the perfect place to try it for yourself.

During your stay in Christchurch, you can go bungee jumping in the nearby town of Hanmer Springs.

From there, you’ll take a 35-metre leap from the historic Ferry Bridge.

For an extra charge, you can also purchase photos of the experience so you can remember this adventure for the rest of your life.

It’s a great way to get your adrenaline pumping if you’re wondering what to do in Christchurch.

The International Antarctic Centre is one of the biggest attractions in Christchurch.

Its main function is to allow people to enjoy the wonders of Antarctica from the comforts of New Zealand.

It’s a great place to bring your kids, and it’s a lot of fun for adults as well.

There are many things to see and do while you’re here. One of these is its indoor Antarctic Storm.

This is a completely safe experience that takes place in an indoor polar room chilled to -5 degrees Celsius.

You can also go on the Hagglund Ride which simulates the rough conditions of riding in a real Hagglund.

You can even hang out with little blue penguins while you’re there!

Yes, you read that right.

Not only can you take a ride in a helicopter while you’re in Christchurch, you can also try your hand at flying one yourself.

This is a really cool thing you can cross off your bucket list and is a unique experience you can only have in Christchurch.

The flight lasts for thirty minutes.

During this time, a trained instructor will guide you through the steps of taking off, flying, and landing the helicopter in the Canterbury Plains.

If this sounds a little too intense for you, there are other tours where you can simply ride along as a passenger and admire the scenery of Canterbury Plains.

As beautiful as New Zealand is from the ground, it’s even more breathtaking from the air.

To explore more of the incredible nature outside of Christchurch, don’t forget to read our New Zealand Travel Guide .

Art lovers are sure to appreciate this. Christchurch is a city that’s well-known for its street art.

Everywhere you go, you’re sure to find old buildings with brilliant murals painted on their sides. Much of this was made after the earthquakes in an attempt to uplift the spirits of its citizens.

In fact, you can find an entire gallery of these on Brockworth Street. This can be found in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton.

On this street, you’ll find a wide array of murals painted on the sides of brick walls.

The art you’ll find here ranges from humorous to surreal and is a must-see for anyone who loves art.

Art lovers should also check out the Christchurch Art Gallery. It’s right next to the beautiful Hagley Park and Avon River and is full of contemporary art and local events. Between the street art and the Christchurch Art Gallery, you’re spoiled for choice here.

If you’ve ever wanted to explore Middle-Earth for real, this is your chance.

It’s a well-known fact that the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed in the beautiful country of New Zealand.

While you’re in Christchurch, you can visit several of the main locations that were used for the movie.

Some of the key locations you can visit include the settings for the Shire, Edoras, Helms Deep, and the Gardens of Isengard.

You’ll also get to learn more about how these amazing locations were brought to life in the movies.

This is a unique experience that you can only have in New Zealand and is something every Lord of the Rings fan should see for themselves.

The Christchurch Gondola is one of the city’s most popular attractions. In this way, you can admire the city from above in a gondola.

The gondola is 1000 meters long and takes you to the summit of Mount Cavendish.

Along the way, you’ll be greeted with incredible views of Christchurch and the Southern Alps.

Once you reach the summit, you can grab a bite to eat at the Red Rock Cafe or look for souvenirs at Shop at the Top.

The gondola is also a great way to reach some of Christchurch’s best hiking trails.

Or you can simply ride the gondola back down to the city.

As mentioned before, you haven’t truly seen the city until you’ve seen it from above – making this a Christchurch must-see.

This is your opportunity to have an up-close encounter with these amazing creatures.

On this tour , you’ll be taken to the beautiful Akaroa Harbor where you can swim alongside Hector’s dolphins.

This particular dolphin species is one of the smallest in the world, and this is the only place where you can find them.

You can also expect to see other wildlife such as penguins and seals while you’re there.

The dolphins themselves are incredibly friendly and playful.

You’re guaranteed to have a fun, unforgettable experience during your time with them.

On top of this, you’ll also see many other landmarks on your way to Akaroa Harbor such as Governor’s Bay and Lake Ellesmere.

When you’re in Christchurch, you have the opportunity to go rafting down the Rangitata River.

This is an extremely fun experience and is sure to appeal to all the thrill-seekers out there.

The rapids on this river go all the way up to Grade 5, which is excellent for experienced rafters who are looking for a challenge.

For those who want a more tranquil rafting experience, you can take a trip on the Rangitata River’s lower gorge instead.

This part of the river features Grade 2 rapids and is appropriate for families with children.

No matter which one you choose, a riverside barbecue will be waiting for you at the end of your adventure.

This is another way to enjoy Christchurch’s more creative side.

The World Buskers Festival is an annual event that takes place every January during New Zealand’s summer.

This event features hundreds of street performers with acts in many different genres.

It’s the only place where you can see this many street performers in one place, and the range of entertainment on display is quite astounding.

There’s music, comedy, dancing, juggling, vaudeville, and much more.

Not to mention acts that completely transcend description.

The festival is known for its crazy, off the wall performances, and attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year.

It’s definitely unlike any other festival you’ve ever been to.

This is what you want to do if you’d like to learn more about Christchurch’s history and culture.

The Ko Tane Maori Experience takes you to an interactive replica of an old, Maori village.

During this time, you’ll learn more about the tools the Maoris used, the games they played, and the techniques they used to cook their meals.

You’ll also see a 45-minute performance that includes dancing, songs, games, and weapon displays. All of this ends with a four-course dinner that features traditional hangi cuisine.

It’s a fascinating look at how an indigenous group of people once lived their lives.

If you love to learn about other cultures, then this is something you simply can’t afford to miss.

These are just a few of the exciting and awesome things to do in Christchurch. As you can see, it’s an amazing city that offers many different kinds of adventures.

Whether you’re looking for action, creativity, or incredible natural beauty, you can find it here.

The Top 15 Things to Do in Christchurch, New Zealand

places to visit near christchurch

The largest city on New Zealand's South Island and the third-largest in the country, with a population of 400,000, Christchurch offers an interesting mix of art, culture, history, nature, and outdoor activities not far from town. Although it experienced two devastating earthquakes in late 2010 and early 2011 that destroyed many homes and buildings in the central city, it has well and truly brushed itself off and rebuilt. Whether you're just passing through on a longer trip around the South Island or plan to spend a few days in Christchurch and the surrounding Canterbury region, here are the top 15 sights and activities you shouldn't miss.

Pay Your Respects at the Earthquake Memorial

In 2010 and 2011, Christchurch and surrounding areas were hit by two powerful earthquakes, plus a series of major aftershocks in the following months. The first, on Sept. 4, 2010, was more powerful (7.1 on the Richter scale), but the second, on Feb. 22, 2011 (6.3), was more destructive. The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial was unveiled in 2017 and commemorates the earthquakes and the lives lost. Designed by Slovenian architect Grega Vezjak, the names of the 185 killed are carved into the marble panels of a wall that stretches along the banks of the Avon River in the central city.

Punt on the River Avon

Flowing from the hills of western Christchurch, the Avon River winds calmly through the central city. A popular activity is to go on a sightseeing punt ride (a flat-bottomed boat propelled by a long pole pushed against the bottom of the river) with a guide dressed in old-fashioned English dress, which you might see in the English city of Cambridge. Alternatively, you can rent a kayak and go for a self-guided paddle. The water quality here isn't great, though, so swimming should be avoided.

Be Intrigued by the Unusual Cardboard Cathedral

Chanachai Panichpattanakij / Getty Images

One of the second Christchurch earthquake casualties was the partial collapse of the city's namesake Anglican cathedral, Christchurch Cathedral, in the center of the city. The  Christchurch Transitional Cathedral  (aka the Cardboard Cathedral) was constructed and opened in 2013, designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. It's an A-frame building constructed largely out of cardboard tubes and decorated with colorful triangular glass windows at the front. It's more robust than it sounds and definitely weatherproof.

Take a Day Trip to the Banks Peninsula

Robin Smith / Getty Images

The bulbous, volcanic Banks Peninsula extends south-east of Christchurch city and makes an ideal day-trip destination for outdoor activities. Hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and dolphin watching can all be enjoyed here. Dolphin watching via kayak is a charming experience, as you have the chance to see the world's smallest and rarest dolphin, Hector's dolphin, close up without the disturbance of traveling on a large boat. To experience some rare French culture (and food!) in New Zealand, check out the village of Akaroa, which French colonizers settled in 1840. Historians believe that the French settlement of Akaroa prompted Britain to speed up its annexation of New Zealand.

Swim at Sumner Beach

Meg Bowden Cooke / EyeEm / Getty Images

All coastal cities have their go-to beach playgrounds, and Sumner Beach fills this need for Christchurch's residents. About a 20-minute drive southeast of the central city, Sumner has a 1,300-foot stretch of sand, a paved promenade, cliffs, and a rock cave to explore, and is good for swimming as lifesavers patrol it in the summer. Scarborough Beach, east of Sumner, is good for surfing but less suitable for swimming.

Learn About the Frozen Continent at the International Antarctic Centre

As New Zealand is one of the closest countries to Antarctica, New Zealand scientists have long been involved in scientific study and exploration of the frozen continent to the south. Christchurch's International Antarctic Centre has interactive exhibits about the continent that few people experience for themselves. It's also home to around 25 rescued little blue penguins in a habitat that has been designed to resemble the Banks Peninsula.

Go on Safari at Orana Wildlife Park

MollyNZ / Getty Images

While New Zealand is home to some unique native birds and wildlife , to see more exotic species, head to the Orana Wildlife Park . The 200-acre open-range park allows visitors to see animals like lions, rhinos, meerkats, gorillas, monkeys, and giraffes from the back of a safari vehicle (safely caged in!). You can also watch various presentations and feedings. Orana is involved in numerous conservation projects, including breeding programs for endangered exotic species and Department of Conservation (DOC) recovery programs for threatened New Zealand birds.

Ride the Heritage Tram

Laurie Noble / Getty Images

Although trams (streetcars/trolleys) are no longer used as a mainstream way of getting around Christchurch, some historic tracks remain in the central city. The restored heritage trams are an atmospheric way of sightseeing and let you leave the car at your accommodation, so you don't have to worry about parking. The tram runs on a hop-on hop-off circuit, and drivers provide interesting live commentary. The seventeen stops include popular must-see attractions like the museum, botanic gardens, and New Regent Street. A full circuit takes just under an hour. Tickets last all day, and kids ride for free.

Admire the Architecture of New Regent Street

huafires / Getty Images

Central Christchurch's New Regent Street has been called New Zealand's most beautiful street. In a country full of English and Scottish-inspired architecture, the Spanish Mission-style architecture is certainly eye-catching. Built in the 1930s, behind the pastel-hued facades are a range of high-end souvenir shops, jewelers, bars, coffee shops and restaurants, hairdressers, galleries, and other shops. The heritage tram runs through New Regent Street, but otherwise, it is pedestrianized. It's a perfect place to go for an alfresco drink on a summer evening when the days are long at this southern latitude.

Taste Wine in the Waipara Valley

Matteo Colombo / Getty Images

Not to be confused with the Wairarapa wine-producing region of the North Island, the Waipara Valley is home to the majority of Canterbury's vineyards and wineries. It's about an hour's drive north of Christchurch. Red pinot noir is the most common wine produced in the Waipara Valley, with some chardonnay and riesling whites. Drop into cellar doors for some tastings or visit a winery with a full restaurant.

Stroll Through the Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Mark Meredith / Getty Images

Part of the larger Hagley Park in central Christchurch, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens offer a calm, shady, and free place to chill out while sightseeing in the busy city. As well as an abundance of New Zealand flora and glass conservatories, the gardens feature permanent and temporary art installations and sculptures, and the first New Zealand Peace Bell, one of many around the world created by the Japanese World Peace Bell Association. The Avon River runs through part of the gardens.

Birdwatch at Lake Ellesmere

Oliver Strewe / Getty Images

Shallow, brackish, coastal Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) is south of Christchurch and west of the Banks Peninsula. It's technically a lagoon as there's a small opening into the Pacific Ocean on its southwestern end. Lake Ellesmere is an important wildlife area, particularly for birds: the wetlands provide a habitat for 133 native New Zealand bird species. Enthusiastic bird watchers should take a pair of binoculars.

Check Out New Zealand Art at the Christchurch Art Gallery

Soshnikov / Getty Images

The distinctive curved steel and glass exterior of the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu houses one of New Zealand's most important public art collections. The permanent and temporary exhibitions tell stories about the history and culture of Christchurch and Aotearoa New Zealand. Entry is free, and the gallery is open late on Wednesdays.

Drive Through the Tunnel to Lyttelton

7Michael / Getty Images

Over (or, rather, through) the hills from central Christchurch is the historic, quirky settlement of Lyttelton, on the side of an extinct volcano overlooking Lyttelton Harbour. The harbor was the landing site for the first four settler ships to Christchurch from England, so Lyttelton is an historically important place. A heritage walk around Lyttelton is a good way to learn about this history, and maps with numbered stops are available from the Lyttelton Information Centre. Visitors also come to enjoy the Saturday markets, cafes, and boutiques, walking tracks around the hills, and to visit the former quarantine station and leper colony of Quail Island in the harbor. Getting to Lyttelton from Christchurch requires traveling through the longest road tunnel in New Zealand, at 1.2 miles long.

See What's Left of Cathedral Square

falun / Getty Images

Christchurch's Cathedral Square used to be the heart of the city, with the grand spired Christchurch Cathedral at its center. First built in 1850, it was a focal point of city life. This changed somewhat with the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, which damaged the imposing cathedral and other heritage buildings at the square. One landmark that remained is the 59-foot metal sculpture "Chalice" by Neil Dawson, constructed in 2001. Since the earthquakes, local government and organizations have worked to revitalize Cathedral Square without the cathedral's presence and its soaring spire. The process of rebuilding the cathedral has started but will take many years. Even though the public space is not as architecturally unified as it once was, it's still highly worth visiting.

Ōtautahi Christchurch

This vibrant city offers spectacular culture, heritage, and nightlife – along with the world’s most stunning scenery, right on its doorstep.

By rights, Christchurch should top lists of the world’s most livable cities, but it usually flies under the radar in this respect. Which is another point in its favour. Its relaxed vibe and genuine hospitality are part of its charm.

More than a decade after two earthquakes devastated the city, it is being rebuilt and reimagined. Some of the eye-catching blue-stone heritage buildings may have gone, but in their place are new spaces, designed for modern city living. This includes more green spaces, with t he biggest a swath of land twice the size of Central Park in New York.

For most cities, their historical architecture seems at odds with its modern counterparts. Here, the two meld harmoniously together. A fact that is mirrored in the city’s cultural life. If you want art, restaurants, and accommodation (or just an attitude and way of life) that look back or forward in time, or both together, this is where you’ll find it. In short, this a city that often surprises and is always hard to leave.

3. Explore Christchurch by Historic Tram

Christchurch, New Zealand Things to do: Christchurch Tram

One of the most unique things to do in Christchurch is to step back in time and discover what it was like to explore the city years ago onboard a historic tram. While Christchurch may be one of the youngest cities in the world, it still has a fascinatingly rich history to discover.

The historic Christchurch Tram works in a similar way to the hop-on, hop-off buses you find throughout major cities. The tram follows a single route, but you can get on or off at any of the 18 stops whenever you like, however many times you like. You can even stay onboard for the full loop and see all kinds of fascinating places during your 50-minute ride.

What to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: Christchurch Tram

Some of the most popular places the tram passes include the Botanic Gardens, Canterbury Museum, New Regent Street, Avon River, and Margaret Mahy Playground. No matter where you decide to get off, you’ll find yourself in a buzzing neighborhood surrounded by attractions, cafes, bars, restaurants, and stores.

4. Walk around the Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Best Things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: Christchurch Botanic Gardens

When you need a break from all the lively things to do in Christchurch, take it easy and wander around the Christchurch Botanic Gardens . This gorgeous green space covers an unbelievable 52 acres and is a wonderful place to stroll and simply enjoy nature.

What makes this botanic garden special is that it has different sections dedicated to the various seasons. The spring section is teeming with bright yellow daffodils, while the summer section is brimming with sweet-smelling roses in every color. Visiting Christchurch in winter? No worries – there are plenty of indoor conservatories you can check out to keep warm.

Cool Things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: Christchurch Botanic Park

One of the best things about the gardens is that there are little pieces of artwork and sculptures dotted all over the place, so you never know what you may find. There’s also a fun playground for kids and even a paddling pool that’s open during the summer. A great option if you’re on a budget, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are completely free to explore.

5. Devour Fresh Crayfish

Fun Things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: Crayfish

Love seafood? Then you’ve absolutely got to try crayfish when you’re in Christchurch. This local delicacy is caught in the waters surrounding the city throughout the year, so you’ll always be able to find it fresh, no matter when you travel. But you’ll find it most abundant between February and May when many fish and seafood restaurants will offer all kinds of creative specials for very reasonable prices.

If you’ve never had it before, crayfish tastes like a cross between lobster and shrimp. The meat has a deliciously subtle sweet-nutty flavor that’s so good you don’t need to pair it with anything. Crayfish has a texture that’s similar to lobster, but it’s even more tender and juicy.

The Fisherman’s Wharf is one of the very best places to get crayfish in Christchurch. This amazing seafood restaurant is located in Lyttleton and dishes up a vast range of fresh fish and seafood caught that very day. They only serve crayfish when it’s at its finest (February-May), so try it if your trip coincides with those months. Even if it doesn’t, we still suggest going there for the fabulous weekend breakfasts.

6. Hike the Godley Head Loop Track

Christchurch, New Zealand Bucket List: Godley Head Loop Track

For some of the best sights in Christchurch, escape the city center and follow the Godley Head Loop Track . One of the very best hikes in South Island, this trail is around 5.8 miles long and takes roughly 3 hours to complete. It’s intermediate level, so you should have decent footwear and have done a few trails of similar length before tackling this one.

Along the walk, you’ll have the chance to see all kinds of fascinating sights, from the Kaikoura Ranges and the Banks Peninsula to various hidden spots in Christchurch and even some WWII sites. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get to see a penguin colony frolicking on one of the city’s gorgeous beaches!

The walk begins and ends at Taylors Mistake car park, where you can see what’s left of some ancient cave houses built into the cliffs. There are many spectacular highlights along the trail. Some of our favorites are beautiful observation decks, engrossing gun platforms, and the Godley Head coastal defense battery.

7. Attend the World Buskers Festival

Must do things in Christchurch, New Zealand: World Buskers Festival

Planning your trip for New Zealand’s summer? Then you’re in luck! January is when you’ll find one of the coolest things to do in Christchurch – the World Buskers Festival . During this crazy festival, the city becomes a circus for two weeks, with all kinds of weird and wonderful performances happening throughout almost every public spot.

From talented trapeze artists swinging over the bushes of Hagley Park and burlesque dancers showing off their talents around the Hagley Oval cricket pitch to Parisian mimes pretending to play tug-o-war along the banks of the Avon River and walking discos that flow throughout the streets, there’s so much going on during the World Buskers Festival that you’ll feel exhausted just from watching.

What to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: World Buskers Festival

The festival aims to be as inclusive as possible, so there are special performances for adults, families, and little ones. Better still, while some of the events require tickets, a lot of them are free to enjoy. There’s a detailed itinerary on the official website, so check it out and use it to help plan your trip.

8. Go Jet Boating on the Waimakariri River

Best Things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: Waimakariri River

Put on your brave face and head to the Waimakariri River. This is where you’ll find one of the most exciting Christchurch attractions – jet boating. Tip: do as the locals do and call the river “The Waimak.” Its nickname is much easier to pronounce!

There are three different jet boating options along this exciting river. The calmest option is 30 minutes long and is designed to be relatively slow-going so you can enjoy as much of the scenery as possible. There’s a more challenging option that lasts 90 minutes and shoots you through the shifting, shallow, and ever-changing courses of the shingle-bottom river.

Cool Things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: Waimakariri River

If you want to experience the best that the Waikmakariri River has to offer, we suggest booking the longest package the jet boating tour company provides. This lasts 4.5 hours and is known as the Jet Boat Safari Tour.

It follows a path along the upper Waimakariri Gorge which you can’t get to any other way. You’ll zoom along the snow-fed waters of the river through canyons and gorges. The scenery you see and the adrenaline you feel are indescribable.

9. Watch the Sunset from New Brighton Pier

Fun Things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: New Brighton Pier

You’ll find one of the best things to see in Christchurch at New Brighton Pier. This impressive pier is the longest of its kind in Australasia. It stretches out to sea for a whopping 984 feet. It was made way back in 1894 out of wood and was completely demolished in 1965 because it was falling apart. The pier you can see today was built out of concrete and opened up in 1997.

New Brighton Pier looks fairly normal during the day, but just wait until the sun begins to set. The view of the totally calm sea reflecting the reds, pinks, oranges, and purples of the sky as the dazzling sun dips below the horizon looks like something knocked up in Photoshop. Hang around until the sun has completely disappeared and you’ll get to see the pier illuminated with hundreds of twinkling LED lights.

Christchurch, New Zealand Bucket List: New Brighton Pier

If you’re into architecture and history, there’s an award-winning cafe with loads of information about New Brighton Pier at the beginning. There’s also a cafe and a restaurant if you need a break.

10. Mix It Up with a Kiwi Burger

Must do things in Christchurch, New Zealand: Kiwi Burger

You may not think you’re eating local food if you’re seeking out a burger in Christchurch, but a Kiwi burger isn’t any old burger. This unique fast food item is made up of a regular beef patty layered with the usual toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion, etc.) as well as sliced beets and a fried egg, all sandwiched inside a burger bun. It sounds totally bizarre, but you’ve got to try it!

Kiwi burgers are so popular that you’ll find them in pretty much every single restaurant that has a burger menu. You can even find them at every McDonald’s location throughout the city.

Burger Burger does one of the very best Kiwi burgers you’ll find in Christchurch. This cool and trendy burger joint dishes up their local burger made from a 6 oz beef patty with bacon, aged cheddar, pickles, cos lettuce, tomato, a fried egg, beets, tomato jam, mustard, and mayonnaise.

Not sure a Kiwi burger is quite your thing? There are plenty of other drool-worthy burgers to choose from here, too. We love the Old Smokey burger with bacon, caramelized onions, smoked aged cheddar, and BBQ sauce!

11. Take New Zealand’s Most Scenic Rail Journey

Christchurch, New Zealand Things to do: TranzAlpine Train

One of the top things to do in Christchurch is to ride the TranzAlpine train from the city to Greymouth. This remarkable trip is widely regarded as the most scenic journey in New Zealand and we certainly aren’t going to argue.

During the magnificent ride, you’ll get to see Arthurs Pass and the Southern Alps, both of which are too beautiful for words. To make sure you don’t miss a single moment of the scenery, there are several open-air viewing areas on the train, so you don’t have to look at your surroundings through glass. The TranzAlpine train even stops at the best scenic points so you can take clear photos.

What to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: TranzAlpine Train

The train departs from Christchurch on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and the journey takes around 4.5 hours to complete, covering 139 miles in total. While you’re free to return on the same day, riding on a train for 9 hours can be a little rough – even if the scenery is astounding. Because of this, we suggest that you spend the night in Greymouth and travel back to Christchurch in the morning.

12. Visit the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Best Things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand: Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Spending the day at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is one of the most fun things to do in Christchurch. The reserve does an excellent job of taking care of its residents, and all the animals are incredibly well looked after and kept in large habitats designed to reflect their homes in the wild.

The reserve is divided into three different types of animals: exotic animals, local animals from New Zealand, and domestic farmyard animals. The exotic section is where you’ll discover a ring-tailed lemur, gibbons, iguanas, and emus, while the New Zealand section is home to morepork, kea, kaka, tuatara, possums, and (of course!) kiwis. Thanks to the reserve’s glass-free nocturnal kiwi house, you’re guaranteed to see at least one kiwi during your visit.
