10 Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose, CA

Searching for the perfect weekend getaways from San Jose or elsewhere in the Bay Area? You’re in luck – there are plenty to choose from. In fact, one of my absolute favorite things about living in the South Bay is the abundance of day trips and weekend trips in close proximity to here.

Want to walk among the redwoods and scale epic mountain ranges? Or perhaps you’re in the mood for a quiet seaside escape, where you can stroll foggy shorelines and search for whales in the distance? Maybe you’re ready for a city break, where you can explore cultural attractions and sample world-class food? Or a wine country getaway, filled with leisurely brunches and boujee tastings?

Well, there’s a weekend getaway from San Jose to appeal to all of those desires…and many others! I’ve spent the past 2.5 years scouring California tourism websites, crossing off bucket list destinations, and discovering my own hidden gems throughout the state.

This list doesn’t cover every weekend trip from San Jose that I’ve enjoyed, but does include my top 10 favorites. Happy travels!

Distance from San Jose: 2.5 hours

I’m not sure I’ll ever find the words to do justice to the magic of Big Sur  – the land of foggy coastlines, enchanting redwoods, kitschy family lodges, cozy log cabins and breathtaking scenic drives. It’s a place where you can choose your own adventure, from redwood hikes to seaside strolls and so much more.

Important side note: Big Sur is not a single town or national park, but rather an unincorporated area spanning 70 miles along the central California coastline. Within this region are multiple state parks, natural preserves, beaches, and hiking trails, all linked by the iconic Highway 1.

And while the scenery and activities are amazing , my favorite memory from Big Sur is glamping in a hand-woven twig hut at Treebones Resort . I’ve stayed in some pretty unique accommodations  around the globe, but the twig hut definitely tops the list. That property is pure magic!

2. Yosemite

Distance from san jose: 3.5 hours.

Yosemite National Park is situated in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, and is famed for its incredible cliffs, deep valleys, waterfalls, rivers, and ancient sequoia groves. During my own visit to Yosemite, the word that kept coming to mind was “majestic.”

The mountains, the trees, the waterfalls, the rivers—they’re all so powerful, grand, and wild within the park national boundaries. It’s just a larger than life kind of place!

We visited Yosemite during early summer, when the landscapes were lush and the waterfalls were roaring. But I’m itching to return in the winter months; I can only imagine how breathtaking and peaceful the scenery is when its blanketed in a thick layer of fluffy white snow. Add in a cozy lodge and a cup of spiked hot chocolate, and I’m all set!

Distance from San Jose: 45 minutes

One of the destinations I was most eager to visit after moving to San Jose was Oakland , the “other” city by the bay (with the original City By the Bay being San Francisco, of course).

Oakland is a true multicultural melting pot, and has developed a reputation for its trendy neighborhoods, colorful street murals, and bustling waterfront district. The hip and historic Temescal neighborhood swept me off my feet with its plentiful boutiques, funky dive bars, beer gardens, art galleries and cafes.

And don’t even get me started on the food – Oakland has it all, from southern style mac-n-cheese ( promise me you’ll try the buffalo mac at Homeroom if you ever visit Oakland) to authentic Ethiopian, Burmese, Korean and other global cuisines.

4. santa cruz.

A quick trip over the hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and you’ll feel like you’re a world away from Silicon Valley. For me, Santa Cruz almost feels more like SoCal than NorCal; the kitschy beach boardwalk, long stretches of shoreline, and laidback surfer vibes probably play a role in that.

My perfect day in Santa Cruz? Strolling down the beach with a coffee and a pastry, window shopping and eating my way through downtown, cheap thrills on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and sunset at Natural Bridges State Beach.

Honestly, the entire stretch of coastline between San Fransisco and Santa Cruz makes for a great weekend getaway. Pescadero and Half Moon Bay are two of my favorite charming little towns north of Santa Cruz.

Distance from San Jose: 2 hours

Ah, Sonoma . You will forever be one of my favorite weekend getaways from San Jose! No matter how many times I visit, I discover more charming towns, more sprawling vineyards, more excellent wines, and more reasons to return to this iconic region of California.

Don’t be fooled – there is a town called Sonoma, but most often when people talk about visiting “Sonoma” they’re referring to the entire county…which is quite large! You could drive for an hour and still be in Sonoma County, and there are plenty of charming towns to choose as your base.

Healdsburg is my favorite town in Sonoma, with Sebastopol coming in as a close second. Not only is this region of California ridiculously beautiful, it also produces some truly world-class wines, and is more laid back (read: less pretentious) than neighboring Napa.

…that said, I’ll never pass up an opportunity to visit Napa Valley. My favorite towns (so far) are Calistoga and Napa , though I’ve heard great things about St. Helena too.

Some of Napa’s wineries truly look like they were plucked out of the Tuscan countryside; they’re incredibly regal and luxurious. Others are a bit more understated, but either way you can always be sure that the wine will be amazing .

Accommodations in Napa can be quite pricey, so I usually opt for Airbnbs or budget chain hotels. With any luck, you’ll be tipsy enough that it won’t matter where you’re sleeping anyways!

7. San Luis Obispo

Distance from san jose: 3 hours.

For wine enthusiasts, San Luis Obispo  is an excellent off-the-beaten-path alternative to Napa and Sonoma. San Luis Obispo County is actually the third largest wine region in all of California, but it’s much less popular among tourists than its northern counterparts.

The Edna Valley area is absolutely gorgeous, and is home to a number of highly-rated wineries in very close proximity to one another. It’s known primarily for its Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs – two personal favorites of mine.

Downtown San Luis Obispo is also cute as can be, with its plentiful hip cafes, charming brunch spots, lively bars, and quirky shops. If you’re able to visit on a Thursday, you can’t miss the iconic Thursday Night Farmer’s Market. It felt more like a festival or street party than a farmer’s market, really!

Adventure seekers can outdoor lovers can enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking and SUPing in the hills and coastal areas surrounding San Luis Obispo.

8. Carmel-by-the-Sea

Distance from san jose: 1.5 hours.

Carmel-by-the-Sea . The name alone sounds like something out of a fairytale…and after seeing the town myself, I can safely say that the name is a perfect fit. This ritzy little village is known for its old world charm, scenic and walkable downtown, and dramatic coastal views.

Quaint cottages line the streets of Carmel’s one-square mile downtown area, along with boutiques and wine tasting rooms. You won’t find any street numbers here; instead, businesses and residents name their homes (i.e. “Sea Urchin”) or use cross-streets or descriptive details to provide directions.

Carmel is also the perfect jumping off point for exploring the famous 17-Mile Drive. This scenic road winds down the Pacific coastline past gorgeous vistas, world-famous golf courses and luxurious homes. You can also combine a trip to Carmel with a visit to nearby Monterey.

9. Santa Cruz Mountains

Distance from san jose: 30 minutes.

True, the Santa Cruz Mountains are close enough to San Jose to be a day trip destination rather than a weekend getaway. But spending a night or two in this forested region is the perfect way to escape the madness of the city and rekindle your connection with nature.

There are a surprising number of charming Airbnbs in the Santa Cruz Mountains, most of which are cozy wood cabins surrounded by redwood trees and trickling streams. But we opted for something a bit more whimsical: glamping in a treehouse …on a working vineyard, no less!

The Santa Cruz Mountains are a hub for under-the-radar wineries and scenic hiking trails, so you can tailor this trip to your perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. How lucky are we to have such a stunning weekend getaway so close to where we live?

10. Lake Tahoe

Distance from san jose: 4 hours.

Lake Tahoe is one of those rare destinations that truly shines in any season. During the summer, you can booze cruise around the lake and cool off in the chilly, perfectly turquoise water. The hiking is excellent in almost any month of the year, and can be especially nice when the autumn leaves come out to play.

Winter is perhaps the most popular time for visit Lake Tahoe, when visitors flock to iconic ski resorts like Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood and Squaw Valley.

Whether you prefer summer sports like swimming, kayaking, hiking and SUPing, or would rather cozy up in a log cabin and spend your afternoons hitting the slopes, Tahoe is easily one of the best weekend getaways from San Jose.

Complete Guide for Planning Your 2023 California RV Trip Across the Pacific Coast Highway

So, you want to plan a California RV trip. In this post and video, I’m sharing a 15-day road trip itinerary my family and I took along the famous Pacific Coast Highway. I’ve included where we stayed, what we did, and where we ate while offering tips and advice to ensure you and your family have an unforgettable experience. I’m also sharing what things cost, our top RV resources, such as how to find FREE overnight parking , plus our favorite RV apps to help guide you along your trip.

NOTE: I recommend booking most of these RV Parks and campgrounds in advance. This will help guarantee you a spot . If you wait until the last minute, there’s a good chance most of the places listed below will be full.

If you’re new here, my husband Siya, our 4-year-old daughter, our pup, and I have spent the last 5 years traveling throughout North America in our Airstream home . But, for this trip, we rented an RV from Cruise America. The cost for 15 days was $3160 USD for a standard 5-person motorhome, which allowed us to pick up the RV in San Diego, California and drop it off in Portland, Oregon. The price also included kitchen kits, bedding (which, unless you’re bringing your own, you will need), along with liability insurance.

The Pacific Coast Highway Route

First, let’s go over the route. It looks a little something like this…

San Diego –> Los Angeles –> Santa Barbara –> Paso Robles –> San Francisco –> Redwoods –> Coos Bay, Oregon

Total driving time = 18 hours and 18 minutes.

Depending on which direction you’re coming from, you can start your California RV trip from either San Diego or Portland, Oregon. The trip works either way. We did this route in February, which was a beautiful time of year for a California RV trip.

Not only are these destinations breathtaking, but the road to get to them will be one of, if not the most, beautiful drives you’ll take in your life. You can see photos and watch videos of people driving along the Pacific Coast Highway. But, it’s not until you experience it for yourself that you realize how incredible the views really are.

So, as I mentioned, we started in San Diego…

California RV Trip: San Diego / Day 1-3

Where to stay: Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay (2 nights)

I recommend spending the first two nights at Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay. This is an RV resort with all the works. Full RV hookups with propane fire pits and picnic tables, WiFi, cable, swimming pool, hot tub, fitness center, dog park, playground (for both kids and adults), and scheduled activities for kids like arts and crafts. Standard full 30-50 amp hookup spots start at $100 USD per night. For this price, you’d get a back-in site. Prices vary slightly during high and low seasons. You can upgrade your site to deluxe, pull-through, premium, or elite for an additional cost.

NOTE: For Sun Outdoors RV parks (which I’ll be featuring a lot in this post), I’ve given you the baseline pricing for a standard site. The pricing does fluctuate depending on availability. For example, if you’re planning a California RV trip in February like we did, you’ll pay less if you make all your bookings in October vs. in January. As spots fill up in the RV parks, rates increase.

What to do:

There’s plenty to do nearby as a family. You can visit the Aquatica San Diego for water fun, a waterfront park for a picnic or play in the park, the San Diego Zoo (we don’t personally do zoos), Third Avenue Village for shopping, and sunset at Imperial Beach. I recommend getting some takeout at one of the restaurants along the strip and heading to the beach for a sunset picnic.

California RV Trip: Los Angeles / Day 3-5

Where to stay: Dockweiler RV Park in Playa Del Rey

Dockweiler RV Park is located on the beach and has basic amenities such as showers, washrooms, and laundry. A back-row basic hookup site costs $65 USD per night. 

Since you’re in Los Angeles, there are endless things to do here. You could spend months and months and never run out of things to do. But, for the sake of time, some highlights (and free things to do) in the area include: hiking to the Hollywood sign (well, a view where you can get a photo), walking down Venice Beach or West Hollywood, and spending the day at the beach. There are SO many incredible restaurants nearby. Some of my favorite plant-based ones are Cafe Gratitude, The Butcher’s Daughter, and Wallflower.

NOTE: All reservations for Dockweiler must be made in advance, with an arrival date that is a maximum of 90 days in advance of the booking date.

California RV Trip: Malibu / Optional Trip Add On (1-2 days)

Where to stay: Malibu RV Park

Siya and I spent a lot of time at Malibu RV Park (4 months, to be exact), before we had out daughter. This RV park is beautiful but fills up fast and is on the higher end of the price scale. If you have a couple of extra days for this trip, this is a fantastic spot to stay. You’ll get a multi-million dollar ocean view from your site and will pretty much be neighbors with Cher (no seriously…you can see her house from the RV park).

Rates vary here throughout the season. However, from January through February, you can get a mountain view site for as little as $73.37 USD per night. This can go up to $132.20 USD per night for an ocean-view site. During the high season (late May through mid-September), these prices more than double per night.

California RV Trip: Santa Barbara / 5-7 days

Where to stay: Sun Outdoors Santa Barbara (2 nights)

Sun Outdoors Santa Barbara is situated in Santa Barbara, where the Pacific Ocean and Ynez Mountains create a stunning backdrop for activities and adventure. Full 30-50 amp hookups start at $80 USD per night. Each site also includes a picnic table, a fire pit, a half-moon grill for outdoor cooking, and cable and WiFi. The resort has a pool, hot tub, playground, dog park, and movie nights under the stars.

Across the street from the RV park is a lovely beach to spend the day at. You can walk right over; no car required. But if you want to drive, it will cost you $10 USD to park for the day. I also recommend taking the short drive into town, which is definitely worth exploring. There are hip cafes, great restaurants, airy wine bars that line tree-shaded streets, small vendors selling food and gelato at the Santa Barbara Public Market, and much more.

Another fun thing to do for the whole family is a whale-watching tour. The one my family took departs from Santa Barbara Harbor, is 2.5 hours long with Condor Express, which costs $70 per adult, and children under 5 are free. Children 5-12 are $50. And yes, we saw a whale 🙂

Next up on this California RV trip is Paso Robles. If you love wine and olives, you’ll love this stop. Driving from Sun Outdoors Santa Barbara to Sun Outdoors Paso Robles (where we stayed) will take just under 2 hours along the Pacific Coast Highway.

California RV Trip: Paso Robles / Day 7-9

Where to stay: Sun Outdoors Paso Robles (2 nights)

This is a beautiful RV resort located in wine country, amongst nature. A full 30-50 amp hookup site starts at $99 per night. It includes cable, WiFi, a picnic table, a free-standing fire pit for your outdoor enjoyment, and total access to all the amazing resort amenities.

The resort has a yummy farmhouse bistro, splash pad, swimming pools, wellness center, dog parks, and weekend entertainment like live comedy, music, and dance performances every weekend. They also hold their own wine-tasting events. But if you prefer to explore the variety of wines outside of the resort, there are plenty of opportunities to do that as well.

We spent the afternoon at Sculpterra – a winery and outdoor sculpture museum. While there, we did a wine tasting which cost $20 per person (and we could choose 6 wines from their menu), and also walked around and had a picnic in the sculpture garden, which our daughter loved.

Besides all the wine-tasting opportunities, there’s the ravine waterpark, Hearst castle (although this is a bit of a drive), and olive tasting.  

For the olive tasting, we went to Pasolivo. All the olives and olive oil are organic and locally sourced. It costs $5 per person for a tasting. BUT if you buy a bottle of olive oil or olives, it’s free!

California RV Trip: San Francisco / Day 9-10

Where to stay: San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge (1 night)

* You’ll be off-grid for the next two nights . So fill up your water tanks, charge your batteries, fill your propane and gas tanks, and prepare for epic views!

Your next stop on your California RV trip will be the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, where you can spend the night…for FREE and will take 3.5 hours on the Pacific Coast Highway. We found this spot on an app called iOverlander – a tool created by and for Rvers. The app allows you to submit and find information and reviews on parks, campgrounds, wild camping, and free RV parking spots . 

There’s a parking lot on the bridge’s north end where many vans and smaller RV’s can park for one night. There are washroom facilities you can use as well. The pros: Sunset is spot on, you get the best view of Golden Gate Bridge (and you can take a photo with no one there and beat the crowd early in the morning), and it’s free. Cons: It can be loud at night because you’re right beside Highway 101, and you have to make sure you lock your doors and keep valuables on you or hidden because break-ins do occur.

California RV Trip: Best Stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway / Day 10-11

Where to stay: Side of the road on Pacific Coast Highway (1 night)

Next up are the Redwoods. BUT FIRST, you’re about to drive along the BEST part of the Pacific Coast Highway. People travel from around the world to come and experience this area because of THE VIEWS! Oh, and you can spend the night on the side of the road if you want…for FREE. We highly recommend you do it since 1) the drive is just under 4 hours to your next stop and 2) it will be one of the most epic places you will ever sleep in your life! We found our spot on iOverlander as well.

After you spend a night on the side of the road, get ready to wake up to the most STUNNING view like EVER before heading out on the road again. Feel free to stop anywhere for some stretching and to relieve yourself. We made a nice stop at Sonoma State Park to enjoy a hike and a break from driving. Along this drive, we even saw a mama cow give birth on the side of the road!

California RV Trip: Redwoods / Day 11-13

Where to stay: Burlington Campground (2 nights)

Next up are the Redwoods. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast like us, visiting the Redwoods is most likely at the top of your bucket list. Let us tell you this… it’s even more magnificent than you imagined! That’s why we recommend spending 3 nights here to soak up the tranquillity and magic these wise gentle giants provide.

Burlington Campground is located next to the Visitor Center on the Avenue of the Giants, approximately 2 miles south of Weott. The campground has 57 sites in old and second-growth redwoods and 3 hike & bike sites for visitors arriving on foot or bicycle. Across the street is a short nature trail leading to the river, where swimming, fishing, and other hiking trails are available.

This is a campground and does not include any hookups, so you’ll be dry camping. Therefore, you’ll want to plan accordingly by filling up your tanks and charging your devices ahead of time. Also, they only allow vans and RVs up to 24 feet, so this isn’t a spot we could have come to with our Airstream. It’s $35 USD per night and includes one vehicle. Each additional car costs $8 USD per night.

You can easily spend a few days just sticking around the campground without having to leave. This is what my family did. We literally spent 3 days forest bathing and left feeling like new people. So calm, recharged, and humbled.

Your next and last stop on your California RV trip is Coos Bay, Oregon. We stayed at Sun Outdoors Coos Bay, and it took us just over 5 hours to get there. This was the longest stretch yet, but we got up early and did it all in one day.

California RV Trip: Oregon / Day 13-15

Where to stay: Sun Outdoors Coos Bay (2 nights)

Sun Outdoors Coos Bay is located on the Oregon coast. Each RV site is located just steps away from the Pacific Ocean. Some highlights from this park include tide pools on their pet-friendly beach and fishing and crabbing adventures. Full 30-50 amp hookups start at $52 USD per night and have cable, WiFi, plus a picnic table and fire pit.

Close by, you can go hiking in the state parks, visit the wineries and museums, go whale watching, or enjoy hot air balloon rides above the coast. I also recommend riding in a dune buggy through Oregon Dunes National Recreation Center. Siya did this and had a blast. The tour was 2 hours long and cost $299 USD for a single-rider buggy.

This charming city is only a 43-minute drive from San Jose, so it’s perfect for a quick getaway.

Check out the fascinating metal birds of the skies at the USS Hornet-Sea, Air, and Space Museum.

This is a popular spot for kids or vehicle and spacecraft enthusiasts.

Spend a few hours sun tanning, picnicking, swimming, or biking at the Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach.

“Our job with Recreation.gov is to set people out to have the best experience they can, and when they know what to expect, they know how to prepare, they know what passes they might need, if their entry fees, if they need time, reservations, anything like that,” said Janelle Smith, who works for the U.S. Forest Service and Recreation.gov Public Affairs.

Here’s how to use the site to plan your next getaway or level up your next road trip .

Is Recreation.gov a real website?

Yes. Fourteen federal agencies , ranging from the National Park Service to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, use Recreation.gov as a “centralized travel planning and reservation platform,” according to the website.

“All of our federal agencies that participate in Recreation.gov share their data with us, even if it's not a reservable location,” said Smith. Travelers can use that data to find points of interest across the country. “Today, there are about 5,000 recreation areas and 121,000 individual sites available to reserve on Recreation.gov .”

Where is a good place to camp? 

To find highly rated campgrounds near you, use the map tool in the middle of the homepage or select the Camping & Lodging thumbnail near the top. Either can help you search Recreation.gov’s database of campgrounds and other accommodations, which you can narrow by rating as well as distance, price, availability, and even mobile coverage. You can click on each location to find additional details like rules, activities and nearby attractions.

You’ll need to create an account on the website to make a reservation.

“There's many reasons for that, the most important being those local managers, who manage the locations where you're going to visit, need to be able to communicate with you for things like maybe a fire emergency or flooding or anything that could impact your stay,” Smith explained.

How do I plan where to stop on a road trip? 

Recreation.gov's Trip Builder can help you find all sorts of scenic places to stop, whether for a picnic or a full park day. 

From the homepage, click on Plan Your Vacation with Trip Builder. From there, you can enter a starting point and destination and filter what you’d like to do along the way. Do you want to go hiking or snorkeling? Are you interested in historical and cultural sites or simply driving around and looking at scenery? You can indicate how far out of the way you’re willing to go for these destinations.

“I can set this buffer zone right here to, say, 50 miles outside of my route,” Smith said. “It will show me then all of the different recreation opportunities along that route … that I wouldn't have known about otherwise just driving along the road.”

Can you just show up to a national park?

Sometimes. Most national parks do not require reservations for entry. Of those that do, most only require reservations for certain areas, during certain times, like summit sunrises at Haleakalā National Park in Hawaii. 

Some may require reservations or fees for specific activities, like cave tours at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. Others may require activity permits or lotteries, like hiking Angels Landing at Zion National Park in Utah.

“If a location requires a permit, it's typically a location that is extremely popular and the demand is greater than the capacity of that experience,” Smith said. She encourages travelers to consider less visited destinations.

“All the participating agencies of Recreation.gov, beyond the big national parks, have hundreds and thousands of amazing locations that people may not know about,” Smith said. “By venturing out just beyond sort of the known areas, I think you can discover parts of this country that are really surprising, and they have so much to offer.”

Ring of Kerry

Try to spend an hour or two walking or hiking in Killarney National Park. With well-marked trails, waterfalls, and beautiful green spaces, it’s a beginner-friendly way to see Ireland’s natural beauty. The Torc Waterfall is the most popular spot in the park, and it’s only a short walk from the car park. 

As the name suggests, West Cork is the western portion of County Cork. This area is renowned as a holiday destination in Ireland because of its beautiful peninsulas, sandy beaches, and laid-back pace of life. 

Baltimore, a small village in West Cork, was once the seat of an ancient dynasty. Today, you can go whale watching, see the Baltimore Beacon, and stroll around Cape Clear. 

Nearby is the impressive Mizen Head, a peninsula known for its signal station, and walk across the bridge that connects Cloghane Island to the mainland. You could also stop at Three Castle Head on the Mizen Peninsula, a spooky set of castle ruins that are said to be haunted. 

Kinsale’s cute and quirky fishing village is one of Ireland’s best places to visit. Located just a short drive from Cork City, this colorful little town has an active harbor, adorable shops, and many great restaurants. 

You can take the Scilly Walk from the center of Kinsale to Charles Fort, a star-shaped fort that is one of Ireland’s largest military installations. You can take some incredible views of Kinsale and the Irish countryside from Charles Fort.

Cork is Ireland’s second city, known for its rebellious spirit and fabulous culinary scene. You can take a walking tour of Cork to learn about the city’s history and cultural significance in Ireland. Then, try to see as many of the city’s most important sites, like the English Market, Fitzgerald Park, Saint Anne’s Church, and Elizabeth Fort, as possible. 

In the evenings, duck into a local pub like the Shelbourne Bar or the Friary for a pint of stout or a pour of Irish whiskey. Sin é is the best spot for live traditional or “trad” music, though it’s best to get there early if you want a seat. 

Blarney Castle

Take a day trip from Cork and visit the historic Blarney Castle. The castle grounds date back to 1200 AD and are home to Blarney Castle and the Blarney Stone. It is said that the Blarney Stone bestows the “gift of the gab” upon those brave enough to kiss it. 

The stone is very near the top of the castle, and you’ll have to lay back and dangle over the edge to kiss it – it’s not for the faint of heart! There is a camera at the top, and afterward, you can buy a photo of yourself kissing the stone as a souvenir. 

Be sure to spend a few hours exploring the magnificent castle gardens. 

Cobh is best known for being the final stop the Titanic made before its fated journey across the Atlantic. It’s also home to St. Colman’s Cathedral, a stunning cathedral that overlooks the harbor. You can also visit “The Deck of Cards,” a collection of colorful houses stacked against each other. As the name suggests, it is reminiscent of a deck of cards. 

There are also several adorable restaurants, pubs, and cafes in town. The Seasalt Cafe is one of the most popular spots in town, and you can stop by for breakfast or lunch while you’re in Cobh. 

After you’ve explored Cobh, you can take a short ferry ride to Spike Island. It is a former prison complex that housed many Irish revolutionaries and other prisoners over the course of its storied history. A tour takes you around the grounds, offering a glimpse into the experiences of Irish prisoners over the decades. 

County Waterford

County Waterford is not always on a list of places to visit in Ireland, but it’s well worth a detour if you’re traveling along Ireland’s Ancient East. This Irish county has rolling green hills, impressive hikes, and picturesque seaside villages. 

One of the best places to visit in Waterford is the seaside town of Tramore. There is a swimmable beach and a small pier with rides, games, and treats for children and families. You’ll also find a Japanese Garden dedicated to the late Irish writer Lafacadio Hearn and the Seagull Bakery. 

County Wicklow

County Wicklow is known as the Garden of Ireland, home to the Wicklow Mountains and a stretch of coastline along the Irish Sea. The county has charming pubs, beautiful green spaces, and wild mountain ranges. Nestled into the Wicklow Mountains is Glendalough, a glacial lake with an adjacent set of monastic ruins. 

Visiting Glendalough is one of the top things to do in Wicklow, and you can enjoy a picnic near the lake or hike in the area. A hiking trail takes you up and around the lake at Glendalough, offering spectacular views of the mountain range. 

Another fabulous spot to visit is Trooperstown, a small local mountain near Glendalough. If you go when the heather is in bloom, the rolling hillsides will be covered in a lush green with a soft purple hue. There are several easy hikes around Trooperstown, but it’s easy to get turned around, so be sure to drop a pin so that you can keep track of where you parked.
