C heck out these excursions in Dominica .

Daytime temperatures range from 70 – 85 degrees (F), with cooler temperatures in the mountains. June through October is the rainy season and also when most hurricanes develop.

Dominica uses the East Caribbean Dollar, but most businesses will readily accept US currency, however you will likely receive local currency as change.

Wireless Internet:

The closest spot for WiFi is Cocorico Cafe which is right across from the pier.

English is the main language spoken in Dominica, however you may hear locals speak a Creole-French dialect.

Where You Dock in Roseau – Dominica

Roseau Cruise Ship Berth is located in the heart of downtown Roseau and is within walking distance to shops, restaurants and attractions.

The other pier is at the Port of Woodbridge Bay which is used less often and is a mile north of the city. The Portmouth Cruise Ship facility on the northwestern tip of the island is where smaller ships dock.

Getting Around Roseau – Dominica

Roseau’s downtown is quite compact, walkable and close to the cruise pier. If you are wanting to get outside of the downtown area and explore the rest of the beautiful island, car rental and taxis are the most common.

In order to rent a car in Dominica, you are required to be at least 25 years old with a minimum of 2 years driving experience, and you have to obtain a local driving permit which will cost approximately $12 USD. Most roads are paved, but driving can be tricky with steep and narrow roads. There are no MPH signs on the island, but go slower, just as you would in any unfamiliar location. The roads are winding and narrow and littered with potholes, so it can be a difficult drive. Driving is on the left side of the road, the use of horns is expected frequently, and if you’re leaving the city, make sure the gas tank is full as gas stations are few and far between.

Here are two of the car rental services available:

Courtesy Car Rental

Island Car Rental

If you would like a taxi to take you on an island tour, it’s advised to book it in advance. Taxi prices are regulated by the government and a 4-5 hour tour usually accommodates up to 4 passengers. While tipping isn’t the norm in Dominica, a little extra for the driver, especially if they’ve taken you around the island, is always appreciated. You can hire one of these taxis at both airports and most hotels.

Public Transportation

There is no government owned public transportation in Dominica. There are privately owned mini-buses that serve routes from Roseau to the villages on the island. The mini-buses will have a number plate that begins with an “H”.  Each community has a designated bus stop in Roseau. If you are along a bus route and see one of these mini-buses, you can flag them down by waving at them. As long as they are not full, they will stop.

Shopping In Roseau – Dominica

There are no shopping malls in Dominica. Stores are open Monday through Friday, with limited hours on Saturday and closed all day Sunday. There are many smaller shops around Roseau that have a diverse selection of hand-made products.

The Kalinago Territory (formerly the Carib Indian Territory), in the northeast of Dominica, is where you will find baskets, wood carvings, pottery and natural soaps. A model village is located here and cultural preservation groups stage performances at this location.

Old Market Square

This historic cobbled square was a former slave market, and today is a straw market that has vegetables and crafts and souvenirs. It is located behind the Dominica Museum, just across the street from the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth.

Dining In Roseau – Dominica

You will be able to find American and Continental cuisine on most of the menus in Roseau if that is what you prefer, but the restaurants in Roseau usually have a specialty or daily special dish to try. Island favorites include tee-tee-tee, which are small freshly spawned fish and manicou, which are small opossums. Conch and seasoned crab meat are also prevalent. You will find plenty of juices like pineapple, melon and mango along with a wide range of beers, rum and local spirits.

Except for the big hotels, most of the restaurants close at night.

Kallaloo House – 66 King George V St., 6 min walk from cruise pier

Kallaloo House is open for a casual breakfast and lunch and they have daily specials including Roti, BBQ and Soups. They are affiliated with The Great Old House, a fine dining restaurant located 3 minutes from the cruise pier, but they are only open for dinner.

Pearl’s Cuisine – 28 Great Marlborough Street – 5 min. walk from cruise pier

This breakfast and brunch restaurant is the primary eatery for authentic Dominica cuisine. Some of the offerings include Bullfoot soup, red bean soup with pigtail, mixed broth (fish and snout) and smoked chicken callaloo.

Ruins Rock Cafe –  King George V Street – 3 min. walk from cruise pier

This cafe offers free WiFi, good “bar” type food and known for their rum punch. Because of its proximity to the cruise port, it is popular among passengers who enjoy its fun, unique atmosphere and great music.

Top Bar – 1 mile from cruise pier

This small island bar is worth the trip for the views and the friendly staff. Located near the Morne Bruce viewpoint,  this is the place for cold alcoholic drinks or fresh juices.

Le Petit Paris –  1 min. walk from the cruise pier

This small cafe serves a wide range of food from French desserts, quiche and croissants, to sandwiches, salads, pizza, burgers and pasta!

Things To Do in Roseau – Dominica

There are lots of nature adventures to experience in Dominica. Remember that this is nature that has not been altered to accommodate tourists. There will not be any sidewalks or roped off areas when you hike to see these natural wonders. You will be expected to be able to manage the hike yourself and use your common sense to keep yourself safe.

Trafalgar Falls

About six miles from Roseau, on the west side of Morne Trois Pitons National Park , the Trafalgar Falls are the most-visited sights on the island. Incredibly impressive, they are easily accessed by most hikers. The upper falls, called Father, empties into hot sulfur springs. The lower falls, called Mother, flows from the river into a natural swimming pool. Know that you will have to climb over boulders in spots and the area can be slippery. The left side of the falls are NOT safe for exploration.

Boiling Lake

Incredibly, this spot is an area where there is an opening in the Earth’s crust. Called a fumarole, this opening releases steam and gas. Flooded with hot, bubbling water that rises in a vapor cloud, this fumarole is about 200 feet wide. Located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park , it is a one of a kind experience. It is a grueling trek, though, that is humid and muddy and can take three to six hours to complete one way. Check out this excursion that includes transportation and admission.

Papillote Tropical Gardens

Spread across 14 acres, these gardens are located just before the trailhead to Trafalgar Falls. You can take a guided tour or wander in the garden yourself. There is an outdoor restaurant in that area, so it is a good spot for lunch too. Take along your swimming suit as there are hot pools throughout the gardens.

Fort Shirley

In the Cabrits National Park, located at the north end of the island, there are hiking trails, swamps, coral reefs, wetlands and Fort Shirley. This UNESCO World Heritage18th-century stronghold has spectacular views down to Prince Rupert Bay. There are also the remains of a volcanic crater. There are signs in the area that explain the fort’s history but an on-site guide is best. Check out this tour that includes Fort Shirley, Indian River (see below) and more!

Indian River

The best place to bird watch on the island, the Indian River is dominated by Bwa Mang trees. The Kalinago (Carib) Indians lived along the river banks and used the river as an access route to the Caribbean. When you take a guided row boat tour up the river, you will be able to visit Bush Bar and try their signature rum drink and some smoked fish. Click here for details on a tour that includes an Indian River boat tour, Fort Shirley (see above) and more!

Emerald Pool

Fed by clear mountain waters from a 40 foot waterfall, these waters appear emerald green because of the leafy, filtered sunlight. Located in Morne Trois Piton National Park, the pool is a favorite for swimmers and is the 2nd most visited tourist spot on the island. It’s a short 10 minute well-marked walk from the Visitor’s Center to the falls. Buy your admission tickets in advance here.

Dominica is known for its unspoiled, natural terrain, and their beaches are no exception.

Some of their most popular beaches are:

Champagne Beach & Reef – On the southwest coast of the island, and closest to Roseau, this beach gets its name from volcanic vents that release bubbles from fissures in the ocean floor. You will need swimming shoes here, as there are more pebbles than there is sand. It’s also one of the more popular beaches for snorkeling and diving.

Mero Beach – Located halfway between Roseau and Portsmouth, this popular beach is located near to a few shops and bars, making it an ideal way to spend the afternoon.

Hampstead Beach – This out-of-the-way, black sand beach is perfect if you’re looking for a more private tropical getaway. You can swim, but the water tends to be a bit rough. This beach was also featured in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, when Jack Sparrow was being chased down the beach by angry natives.

Dominica Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions and Weather

The Dominica cruise port of Roseau is modest by Caribbean standards, but it also is a gateway to one of the region’s best ecotourism islands.

Dominica is unlike almost any other island that mainstream cruise lines visit. It is not famous for beaches or commercialism. Instead, it is dense with rainforests, waterfalls and tropical plants and animals. For an idea of what to expect, watch the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, which was filmed on part on the island.

Rainforest covers two thirds of this 464-square-mile island, nicknamed “The Nature Island”. The island is home to more than 1,200 different plant species and only 70,000 people.

Cruisers visiting the island for only a day should plan on activities much different than most Caribbean islands.

Most cruise lines dock at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth, while some others may dock at Woodbridge Bay or the Cabrits Cruise Ship Berth.

Unlike some bigger islands, Dominica doesn’t have a cruise terminal or elaborate outdoor mall that visitors walk through to reach the tourism district. Instead, they walk right off their ships and into the city of Roseau for a limited amount of shopping, restaurants and excursion operators. They will find a smaller district than other major ports, but it is colorful and growing.

Quick Travel Tips

Where is dominica.

Dominica is about 380 miles south to southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It lies about midway between the islands of Antigua to the north and St. Lucia to the south. It’s a common stop on eastern Caribbean cruises, especially during the dry season.

Eastern Caribbean cruises often stop at either Dominica or the nearby Guadeloupe or Martinique—both of them also rainy islands—while going from the more popular Antigua to St. Lucia.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

Walking Around Attractions

Cruise passengers may find that the port of Roseau has a small but decent tourism district. During our visit, I walked from the cruise port to the other side of Roseau and back again. I saw no other tourists walking through the city. They stayed within the waterfront shopping area.

One worthy attraction in the city is the Dominica Botanic Gardens, which are less than 10 minutes away by foot from the cruise terminal along King George V Street. The gardens stretch over 40 acres and display more than 50 types of plants and trees. Admission is free.

The Morne Bruce viewpoint near the gardens offers panoramic views of the city. Visitors can reach it via Jack’s Walk trail behind the aviaries in the botanical gardens.

Shore Excursions

Outside of Roseau, the most popular shore excursions on the island are hiking , swimming and river tubing. Most of the hikes travel through the rainforest and have levels of difficulty by category.

A guided two-hour city tour including the gardens, Morne Bruce and the original slave market costs about $50 per person.

Quite a few excursions combine hikes with waterfall viewing. The typical waterfall hike will cost about $75 per person. Some excursions include both a city tour and waterfall hike for about the same amount.

Tubing on the Layou River is a way for the whole family to enjoy Dominica’s beautiful scenery. Several companies and guides offer river tubing. Visitors can hire them through their cruise line or directly right along the cruise port. The cost is about $50 to $75 per person depending on the sailing date and other factors.

Guides are available for a hike to Boiling Lake, reportedly the largest boiling lake in the world. The drive there is an hour. This four- to eight-hour round trip takes visitors to a water-filled crater, said to reach 197 degrees fahrenheit. Because of the length of the trip, visitors should expect to pay around $125 per person.

Dominica photo

Dominica’s national parks are all worth visiting. Morne Diablotin National Park offers the highest point on the island, rising more than 5,000 feet above sea level.

Visiting national sites cost $5 each or $12 for a week-long pass. One excursion operator listed a trip to Morne Diablotin plus the Boiling Lake for $175 per person.

The Rainforest Tram offers a view of the rainforest without the strenuous hiking. Ziplining is available along the Layou, Dominica’s longest river.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Dominica cruise port map.

Dominica is a great place to go for ecotourism adventures such as hiking and whitewater rafting. It isn’t the place to go for beaches because they are mostly rocky from past volcanic activity.

Cruise lines and tour operators offer few beach excursions. Still, one of the better options is the black sand Mero Beach in the village of Mero. It is 12 miles north of the Roseau cruise port. Cruise visitors will need a taxi, rental car or excursion bus to get there.

A few excursions that take visitors only to Mero Beach usually cost less than $50. Otherwise, some island tours include Mero Beach along with other stops such as Salton Waterfalls, the sulphur springs at Wotten Waven and the baths at Ti Kwen Glo Cho. The cost for such a guided, multi-stop tour will range around $125 to $150.

Shopping / Restaurants

Shopping and dining in Roseau take a back seat to the natural attractions.

The heart of downtown Roseau is just yards away from the cruise port. Roseau is said to offer the best fruit and vegetable market in the Caribbean.

The city has a modest tourist district with shops, art and craft stands, and restaurants. Several restaurants offer Creole cuisine, including Pearl’s Restaurant on 50 King George V Street (767-448-8707), and La Robe Creole, located on Victoria Street (767-448-2896).

Getting Around / Transportation

Taxis line up along the port, offering rides to travelers. Taxis offer a tour of the island and will usually charge $150. Most excursion operators arrive and leave from there as well.

Taxis have H, HA or HB starting the registration numbers on the license plates. Bus service is available from private minibus operators.

Just steps past the taxis are car rentals for cruisers who want to explore the island independently. Cars drive on the left side of the road because of the island’s British colonial history. A note of caution: the roads in Dominica are often narrow and difficult to navigate. Excursion buses are a safer and better option.

Weather / Best Times to Go

Dominica is a rainforest island because it receives a great deal of rain throughout the year. It is one of the wettest islands in the Caribbean.

The best time to go to Dominica is April during the dry season (which isn’t that dry) for a combination of low risk of rain and warmer temperatures. The worst time to go is any month from late fall until early winter.

The island’s average high temperature stays within a narrow range throughout the year. It ranges from the low 80s Fahrenheit in the winter to the mid 80s in the summer.

The island has a rainforest climate, and receives, on average, 197 inches of rain per year. The driest months of the year are January through April, but short, midday showers are still common.

The average monthly rainfall is four to six inches from January through April during the dry season. Dominica’s dry season is as wet as the rainy season for most Caribbean islands.

Average rainfall jumps to nine inches in May and backs off a bit in June. It then starts climbing again until it reaches a high point of about 15 inches in November.

A taxi from The Roseau Ferry Terminal to the North of the island costs EC$150 or US$56. Passengers from the ferry staying in one of the many hotels in Roseau are in walking distance and do not need a taxi, visitors can also take public transportation since the bus stop for the north of the island is located 5 minutes away from the terminal.

The presence of the Roseau Ferry Terminal in Dominica is a reminder that Roseau has always been associated with trade, commerce and the grounds for local government offices. The Roseau Ferry Terminal area was used during colonial times as a chief port exporting sugar and cotton, and importing slaves for purchase and continues to be a chief port on island.

Historic Roseau

Visit a city where time loses meaning.

The capital city, Roseau, is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the Roseau River, and Morne Bruce and is built on the site of the ancient Kalinago Indian village of Sairi. The quaint town has a picturesque array of 18th-century French architecture and is small enough to be easily explored on foot.

The oldest part of town is around Old Market Square, formerly the original slave market. The Old Market Square is now a vibrant craft vendors’ market for cruise ships and other visitors. The Old Post Office building is now the home of the Visitors’ Information Center, and the Dominica Museum which showcases a small collection of artifacts tracing the island’s history. The Roseau Cruise Ship berth sits across from the Museum and cruise visitors walk off the ships directly into the city for shopping and tours.

Notable sites around Roseau include The New Market on the Riverbank, which displays fresh tropical fruit, vegetables, and herbs. The Roseau Market is liveliest on Saturday mornings but is open all day and through the night from Friday to Saturday.

Morne Bruce is located just above the Botanical Gardens, which offers a panoramic view of the entire city and is a favorite of cruise visitors. Other historic sites include the Fort Young Hotel, Anglican Church relics, the President’s Office (state house), the Carnegie Library relics, the Cenotaph, and the slave monument, all on Victoria Street.

Dominica Update

Dominica Welcomes Disney Magic

Disney Magic of Disney Cruise Line made its inaugural call to Dominica on Tuesday May 16th, 2023, at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth. This was Disney cruise line’s second call to the island, with Disney Fantasy having called in July 2022. In commemoration of the ship’s first call to Dominica, a welcome ceremony including a plaque exchange with the ship’s captain and crew, was held aboard the ship.

The 83,969-ton vessel has a passenger capacity of approximately 2,400, served by 950 crew members. The passenger type is family oriented, thus efforts to cater to the interest of the passengers, includes a kid’s corner with an array of activities for the children’s involvement. Other on shore activities organized by the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) included performances showcasing Dominica’s culture, dress, and heritage. A mini cultural parade along with other cultural acts was coordinated by Dominica’s cultural specialist, Mr. Raymond Lawrence. Passengers of Disney Fantasy were also serenaded by live performances from local bands which were scheduled at intervals throughout the day.

The island’s cruise stakeholders to include Craft & Souvenir Vendors, Taxi Operators and Tour Operators, were all in gear for rendering exceptional services to the passengers and crew of Disney Magic. Dominica’s major cruise sites such as Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls and Mero Beach were heavily visited by cruise passengers.

Dominica’s cruise industry is on the rebound after a devasting blow from the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the cessation of cruise activity for a sixteen-month period from March 2020. Based on preliminary data, the season yielded 244,265 visitors, exceeding the 2021/22 season by 71%. This performance also surpassed the pre-pandemic season (2019–2020) by 29%.

DDA looks forward to the 2023/2024 cruise season and solicits the cooperation of all tourism stakeholders in ensuring a welcoming and enjoyable experience for the cruise visitors for the upcoming cruise season. The Government of Dominica will continue its effort in promoting Dominica as a desirable cruise destination to increase cruise calls to Dominica.

Dominica Has Invested in Infrastructure

On a mission to be the world’s first climate resilient nation by 2030, Dominica has invested heavily in infrastructure, completing projects like putting fiber underground to ensure continued internet connectivity. Dominica’s freshwater utility is in the process of being upgraded as well. The new system will protect against potential impacts from a natural disaster. The island is literally brimming with fresh water.

Dominica has also invested in upgrades to the port to ensure convenient and fast processing times. In addition to the existing regional airports, planning is underway for a new airport in Dominica that will be able to handle large aircraft and direct flights from major markets around the world. With additional investments being made in health care, education, roads, geothermal energy, and a future international airport, Dominica has proven a commitment to growth.

The investments being made by Dominica have positioned the nation as the ideal investment destination for investors looking to capitalize on future growth by investing today.

There are two main sea ports that accommodate cargo and pleasure traffic. Work to expand the existing seaports to increase their capacity is in progress. Cruise ships can stop at Dominica in three different locations. Ferry service to nearby islands is available year-round. A ferry voyage is a fun way to island hop and this is how many visitors from Europe prefer to get to Dominica after flying into the neighboring French Islands.
