The 2008-built Ruby Princess cruise ship is the 9th and last Grand-class Princess Cruises liner, with sisterships Caribbean ,  Diamond ,  Golden (now Pacific Adventure) ,  Grand ,  Crown , Emerald ,  Star (now Pacific Encounter)  and  Sapphire .

The vessel (IMO number 9378462) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310567000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

The 3100-passenger ship Ruby Princess follows the highly evolutionary Crown Princess and Emerald Princess cruise ships. The vessels are virtually the same in layout and design, so if travellers have sailed on Crown, they will not have any trouble finding their way around Emerald or Ruby. But for those who have not travelled on Princess' Grand-class vessels, or for cruisers for whom a Ruby Princess sailing is their first cruise with the line, the ship is going to surprise, and in most cases, delight them with far higher levels of kitchen, service and facilities than passengers would expect on a stylish, mega-vessel catering to over 3,000 guests.  For the most part, Ruby Princess isn't an innovator. The cruise liner has all the most popular Princess facilities - like the 3-deck Piazza with its own bakery, as well as many of those found on older vessels, including the Sanctuary (adults sundeck) and speciality restaurants Sabatini's and Crown Grill.

Although there are not too many surprises on this newest Grand-class vessel, there are some gentle improvements and enhancements. On the Ruby cruise ship, Princess has expanded the appeal of the Wheelhouse Bar (pub) to include English-inspired lunches. Suite guests have the option to enjoy intimate breakfasts at Sabatini's. The new Ultimate Ship Tour allows guests to explore normally never seen onboard spaces, such as the engine room, funnel, photo lab, Navigation Bridge. Among the expanded enrichment projects are Mixology@Sea (bartending skills) and Navigation@Sea (cruise ship navigation lessons).

Decks and Cabins

Most Ruby Princess staterooms (1530 total, in 33 grades) are 170-ft2 balcony cabins (680). Almost 80% of the ship's outside staterooms have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 31. The largest accommodations are the Balcony Suites (410 ft2 / 38 m2, with terrace sized 180 ft2 / 17 m2).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Ruby Princess features three dining rooms, all offering a tasteful, Caribbean-themed menu. Botticelli is for fixed-seating dining, while Michaelangelo and Da Vinci are for passengers who have chosen "Anytime Dining". Reservations are available but are not required. Da Vinci also welcomes guests for waiter-service breakfast and lunch. Rotating menu options include soups, appetizers, mains and desserts. There are also signature pasta and choices like Caesar salad and salmon. The healthy Lotus Spa selections are low in sodium and fat. Cafe Caribe and Horizon Court look identical and are open all day long. The Horizon section serves as a lido buffet restaurant and features breakfast buffets. Lunch choices may include unusual dishes like peanut butter sandwiches and fried banana. There is also the Italian-styled piazza, around which are located the International Cafe (with its wonderful coffees and scrumptious pastries, quiche and chocolate fondue); across the way is Vines, ship's wine and sushi bar (it's got the only really good wine list onboard Ruby). 

In January 2016 Celebrity chef Curtis Stone teamed up with  Princess Cruises for his first-at-sea specialty restaurant serving high-quality, inventive food. During Ruby Princess' dry dock, Share replaced the signature Italian Sabatini's and introduced new bedding, dining options, entertainment and more. Share is only open for dinner and applies a $39 cover charge. Its menu features five areas from which to select multiple dishes and a charcuterie platter. It's hard to order only one of each, as there are enticing recipes like a twice-cooked duck with fennel, parmesan crumb and bacon jus; or shrimp salad with turnip, citrus salt, brioche and lemon gel. 

Share is only found on board  Emerald Princess  and Ruby Princess, for now. "Crafted by Curtis" dishes are on the MDR menus fleetwide. If you wonder why to pay extra at Share, here are the cool things about the brand new Curtis Stone restaurant which make it worth the splurge. Food like this cannot be found anywhere else on the ship. Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess are simple when it comes to dining venues. Before Share, both ships had three main dining rooms, a steakhouse and a buffet, all of which average in terms of overall experience and quality. From its celebrity chef to its natural ingredients and perfectly sized portions, you won't find food like Share's anywhere else on the ship.

Perfect for couples and large groups. This space is open, airy and large, with long tables and more intimate seating arrangements. Large groups have enough room to engage and share dishes. Couples can enjoy more peace and quiet. The ambience is upscale, yet not stuffy. Share's family-style dining and chic decor allow guests to dress their best and still feel relaxed. Passengers will feel more like they're in someone's home, talking and passing plates across the table.

Service at Share is second to none. The wait staff is knowledgeable about the menu and all ingredients handpicked by the celebrity chef's team. According to Stone: "The enthusiasm in that kitchen right now is unparalleled to anything I've ever done; they're so energetic and so up for it."

Guests will have room for dessert. Appetizers, entrees and dessert options, complementing a cheese plate, are conservative in size. Passengers will not only expand their palate by picking at multiple dishes but will also be able to satisfy their sweet tooth.

In April 2024 Princess Cruises announced that starting September 14th (2024) fleetwide would be introduced 3 distinct main dining/dinner table service options – Traditional, Reservable, and Walk-in Anytime. By the new program (introduced with Sun Princess) on each ship are allocated 3 separate dining rooms - one for Traditional dining (offering early and late dinner seating), one with Reservable times, and one for Walk-in Anytime (open-seating). The new options are integrated with the OceanNow service, allowing anything to be ordered anytime, and delivered anywhere onboard.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Princess Ruby Theater is the main venue on Ruby Princess for comedy acts and production shows with a variety of music and selections appealing to a broad mix of ages. Each of the ship's venues has a different offering. Crooners feature music trivia contests and a pianist. Explorer's Lounge hosts events for everything from Wii sports tournaments to art auctions, plus comedy shows and magicians. The Piazza offers various demonstrations, circus-lite acts and musical performances throughout the day. Club Fusion is a part game show, part nightclub venue. Skywalker Nightclub, Princess' trademark, hosts the 70's-, the 80's- and the 90s-inspired nights and a few nights with a variety of modern music. For low-key dancing, head to the Wheelhouse Bar, which hosts combos playing standards and soft rock.

Princess Cruises Ruby ship is the fleet's last Grand-class liner ( Fincantieri Monfalcone -built), with (same-designed) sisterships Crown and Emerald . The other (similarly-designed) fleetmates in this class are Caribbean , Diamond , Golden (now Pacific Adventure) , Grand , Sapphire , Star (now Pacific Encounter) .

The liner was christened on November 6, 2008, at  Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) Florida . Its godparents (Trista and Ryan Sutter) met at ABC's dating show "The Bachelorette", then fell in love and got married. The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) started on November 8, out of Fort Lauderdale.

Skywalkers Night Club (ship's disco) is located aft of the funnel. It's not hanging over the stern, like on the sisterships from the modified Grand-Class (Emerald and Crown) and also unlike Diamond and Sapphire. Fun fact is that Ruby Princess was the first ship to offer "The Ultimate Ship Tour". This program allows passengers to have a look at the shipboard organization process.

In December 2018, Ruby became the world's first cruise liner allowing Chinese passengers to make onboard shopping payments via both Alipay and WeChat Pay - China's top-two popular digital payment platforms. Alipay's in-store payment service covers 40+ countries, and as of 2018 is used by over 900 million people worldwide. WeChat Pay (as of 2018) has around 800 million monthly users worldwide. In 2017, its total volume was around USD 6.5 trillion. Alipay digital payment was introduced on Majestic Princess during ship's 2017 summer homeporting in Shanghai .

Ruby Princess refurbishments review

The ship's drydock refurbishment in 2015 (done in  Vancouver BC Canada /December 3-14) was mainly for general maintenance and resulted in the following deckplan changes:

Two new premium dining venues were added. “SHARE by Curtis Stone” is a family-style restaurant by Curtis Stone (an Australian celebrity chef). Its menu features charcuterie (premium quality meat products), composed salads, homemade pasta, gourmet desserts. The new “Salty Dog Gastropub” cuisine experience (by chef Ernesto Uchimura) is provided by a classic pub menu offered nightly in the Wheelhouse Bar (on Promenade Dec 7) with craft beers and pub favorites served in small plates.

In 2015, aft on Sun Deck 16, “SHARE” replaced "Sabatini’s” – the Italian restaurant, featured on the Princess ships Caribbean, Coral, Emerald and Sun. “SHARE” restaurant debuted on Emerald Princess (in 2015 December). The “Salty Dog Gastropub” debuted on Crown Princess (in 2015 October).

All cruise cabins were upgraded with the new "Princess Luxury Bed".

Club Class Mini-Suite services and amenities were introduced.

The ship’s gym was upgraded with new sports equipment and free weights.

During drydock 2018 (October/USD 8,2 million project) the ship received 3 new dining venues - Slice Pizzeria, The Salty Dog Grill and SHARE (by Curtis Stone).

Ruby Princess' last drydock refurbishment was in 2023 (September 24 through October 22) conducted at Vigor Shipyard in Portland Oregon USA . The 1-month drydocking was mainly for regularly scheduled maintenance and classification works, including a technical overhaul.

Living Like Royalty on a Princess Cruise – A Complete Ruby Princess Review With Photos

In this Ruby Princess review I share detailed information with lots of photos from my recent cruise including a review of my cabin, public spaces and food options.

Some days I wish I had a maid. And a cook. And since I am dreaming, lets add a chauffeur and a gardener to the list. I’ve probably watched Downton Abbey once too often and read too many books set in Britain’s golden age where the hired help does all the work and the Lord and Lady of the manor just get to have fun.

Alas, I was not to the manor born nor am I a princess by birth, but on my recent Ruby Princess cruise through the Panama Canal I certainly felt like one. For 16 glorious days I was waited on as if I were royalty and it was heavenly.

My Ruby Princess review – What I loved about this cruise

Each person has different wants and desires when they cruise. For this trip, I was looking for a relaxing break with no responsibilities and the Ruby Princess cruise ship delivered.

I was fortunate in that my cruise was not full, so the ship never felt crowded. The service was fantastic and was always delivered with a gracious smile even though the staff worked long hours 7 days a week.

It was wonderful down time with no chores while someone else waited on me. I loved having someone make my bed, clean my room, and bring clean towels each day. And I loved not having to cook and eating on my own schedule.

One of my favorite activities was watching concerts and movies on deck “under the stars” while eating pizza, or a burger, or ice cream, or sitting in the hot tub – it was like being at a drive-in without having to drive.

And I really loved having breakfast on the balcony in the morning, staring at the blue ocean swimming by. Or dinner with sunset views. My mini suite stateroom was roomy and comfortable and was my private sanctuary.

With 9 days at sea, I was able to get lots of writing done and yes, also some quilting. I watched a lot of movies, listened to audiobooks, saw shows in the theater, and enjoyed good food – probably a little too much food. There were also plenty of activities on the ship if I wanted a distraction.

Then, at the end of each day, I loved watching the sun set over the water – each day was different, but always beautiful.

Ruby Princess mini suite review

Check-in at the cruise port in Fort Lauderdale went surprisingly quickly and efficiently. Before departure, I had prefilled all the information on the Princess Medallion app which put me into the “blue” check in lane. The only brief additional steps were to register the bottle of wine that I was bringing on board, and to pick up my medallion.

Once on the ship I was pleased to find that Princess had upgraded me to a Reserve midship mini suite cabin on deck 9 – the Dolphin deck. Mini suites are 323 square feet which makes them about 100 square feet larger than a balcony cabin. This makes them a good choice for families, so as a solo cruiser, all that space was utterly luxurious.

The mini suite had one area that held the queen sized bed with night stands and a desk, and then an equivalently sized area with a sleeper sofa, small coffee table and a single chair. And the suite had two TVs – not that I needed that many TVs, but it was nice to be able to watch one TV while lying in bed and the other one when I was sitting on the sofa.

The size of the bathroom also surprised me – it certainly could have been large enough for a bathroom in an apartment in NY city. It had a full sized tub with shower, lots of counter space around the single sink and 3 shelves for storing toiletries.

The other pleasant surprise was the amount of total storage space that I had in the cabin. Each night stand had two drawers and the desk had a deep two shelf cabinet. In addition, the half circle divider between the two sections of the cabin held a mini fridge and two large open shelves.

The closet was equally spacious with plenty of shelves and more than enough hangers. There were also two robes and a safe to store personal items of value.

My only complaint was the lack of conveniently located outlets and USB ports (a common issue on cruise ships I understand). There were two outlets at the desk and two at the top of the half-round shelf divider. For me these were sufficient, especially with an additional multiport extension cord.

But, for multiple people in a cabin or a family traveling together, keeping all the modern techie gadgets charged would take some juggling.

Traveler’s Tip – Note that I could bring a multi port power strip on board like the one in the picture below, but I was not allowed to bring a surge protector.

Besides all the space, I also loved the bed linens. I have a little bit of a Princess-and-the-pea complex when it comes to sleeping and I am quite particular about my bedding at home.

It was so very nice to sleep in a bed that felt as good as what I am used to. The mattress was very comfortable, the linens were a high thread count crispy cotton and the feather pillows were large and fluffy, just the way I like them.

Between the gentle rocking of the cruise ship and being enveloped by such nice bedding, I slept like a baby each night.

The final space in my cabin that I utterly enjoyed was the balcony with its floor to ceiling glass window and door. I got into the habit of having breakfast out there each morning, letting the sun warm me up as I watched the blue ocean swim by.

By today’s standards, the Ruby was not an overly large ship, but she was large enough to provide a lot of amenities.

The Ruby Princess had plenty of public spaces that offered numerous activities all day if I wanted them.

Deck 5 – Plaza

The Piazza – the beautiful three story heart of the ship showcased an elegant, curving three story staircases with lots of glittery gold, marble and glass accents.

Surrounding the Piazza are:

The International Café   – one of my favorite places for food and my favorite spot to pick up a breakfast of a yogurt parfait and an almond croissant. This was a great place to get quick snacks, a light lunch, pastries, or cookies 24 hours a day. This was also the place to satisfy my specialty coffee cravings (for a fee since I did not have any of the Princess Packages).

Good Spirits at Sea – the place to try new specialty mixed cocktails.

Vines Wine Bar – the spot to try different wines from around the world.  The menu at vines also offered a charcuterie board which was one of the casual dining options.

Future Cruise Planning – this was where I put a deposit on a future Princess cruise that came with free onboard credit.

I nternet  café – a nice quiet place to catch up on e-mails with views of the ocean. I enjoyed sitting here with a cup of iced coffee while working on my blog. This was also where I could get help setting up my Medallion Net Wifi.

Deck 6 – Fiesta

Public spaces forward to aft:

Princess  Theater lower level   – the venue for evening shows, performances, and enrichment lectures.

Gatsby’s Casino and bar  – plenty of options for those that like to gamble. Note that smoking was allowed in this space when I was on board.

Video Arcade – video and arcade games for the young and the young at heart (replaced what was previously the Cigar Lounge).

Guest Services – the place where I went for answers and got help during the cruise. Staff were always very friendly and helpful.

Shops of Princess – plenty of choices for browsing and buying.

DaVinci Dining Room   – this is where Reserve dining was located (and was where I ate my dining room meals) as well as where afternoon tea was served.

Botticelli Dining Room – this main dining room was only accessible from the aft lift area.

Deck 7 – Promenade

Public spaces moving forward to aft:

Princess Theater upper level – the place where I went for enrichment lectures and evening shows.

Shore Excursion desk – if  I didn’t want to book shore excursions online or on the app, I could also book in person at this location.

The Wheelhouse Bar and the Gastro Pub – The Gastropub was also one of the casual dining restaurants on the Ruby Princess. The Wheelhouse Bar offered drinks and evening musical entertainment.

The Shops of Princess – lots of choices for browsing and buying.

The Library – A quiet and intimate space where I could find a variety of books to borrow as well as games and jigsaw puzzles.

Crooners Bar – relaxing spot for drinks and music with views of the Piazza.

Explorers Lounge and bar – large venue for drinks, daily activities and evening entertainment.

Crown Grill – specialty steakhouse restaurant serving fine steaks and seafood.

Ocean Front – this was where I could buy different accessories for my medallion.

Club Fusion – another large venue for drinks, activities, and evening entertainment.

Outside on deck 7 was the Promenade Deck that encircled the whole ship and was good for walking, or just relaxing in the shade on a deck chair.

Deck 14 – Riviera

Terrace pool – this out of the way pool area in the back of the ship was hardly ever busy.

Deck 15 – Lido

Public spaces from midship to aft:

THE MIX  – poolside bar for drinks of all types.

The Salty Dog Grill – great spot to satisfy that burger-and-fries craving. Loved, loved, loved the North Carolina pulled pork sandwich.

Neptune’s Reef and Pool – big pool with two hot tubs in the middle of the ship with lots of lounge chairs for sunning and relaxing.

Slice Pizza – Princess says they have award winning pizza, and after eating some almost every day, I have to say that I agree. The Neapolitan style pizza had a thin, crispy crust and each day there was a special that offered different toppings.

Coffee and Cones – free soft serve ice cream any time of day and specialty coffees and teas for an extra charge. This was also where the fresh juice bar could be found.

Calypso Reef and Pool – the second large pool located midship with two hot tubs and lots of lounge chairs. This pool was below the “Movies Under the Stars” screen and it was fun to sit in the hot tub or in the pool and watch a favorite movie or concert on the big screen.

Calypso Bar – outdoor poolside bar offering a variety of drinks.

Horizon Court  and Café Caribe – the place to go for buffet meals or self serve drinks of water, tea and coffee.

Horizon Terrace and Outriggers Bar – deck area around the Terrace Pool that could be accessed from the Café Caribe. This outdoor seating was hardly ever busy on my cruise.

Deck 16 – Sun

In the front of the ship:

Fitness area – The place to go to work off all the calories from all that good food. I could walk for miles on a treadmill while looking out over the deep blue sea.

Lotus Spa – Inside the large spa area was the beauty salon and spa treatment rooms. Additional facilities were also on deck 15.

Lotus Spa pool – this intimate pool and hot tub was open to the outside deck and could be used by anyone, not just those using the spa. It was usually not busy or crowded during my cruise.

Tradewinds Bar – another bar for drinks on the deck above the Neptune pool.

Movies Under the Stars – a large screen above the Calypso Pool where I could watch movies and concerts. This was one of my favorite activities on the ship and was practically empty on formal night.

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria – one of the specialty dining restaurants. I had a lovely dinner here one night.

Adagio Bar – bar area across from Sabatini’s Restaurant. Great place to hang out during the day as it was uually not very busy. Also enjoyed coming here in the evening and listening to jazz.

Outdoor deck with fountains around the Terrace Pool – a very pleasant area to relax with a book. One of my favorite outdoor quiet spaces.

Deck 17 – Sports

The Sanctuary – a quiet, adult only retreat where I could relax without the crowds. An extra daily fee was charged to reserve a deck chair or a cabana for a day or half a day.

The Sanctuary has its own unique menu of snacks and light meals along with an afternoon tea experience which are all included in the cost of reserving a spot for the day.

Travel tip : I reserved time in the Sanctuary as soon as I boarded the ship. I like an afternoon time slot so I can enjoy the special afternoon tea menu served in the Sanctuary.

Camp Discovery and the Teen Lounge – dedicated club areas for children and teens with its own hot tub and a pool.

Deck 18 – Sky

Skywalkers Nightclub – by day a quiet place to read and enjoy up high views of the sea. By night, an active spot for music and drinks. Note that access to this space was via the aft lift only.

Deck 19 – Star

This area was accessible by the aft lifts only. The one time I went up here while we were cruising, it was very windy.

Center Court – basketball and/or pickleball court.

Jogging Track – walking 16 times around the track equaled one mile.

Princess Links – a small putting green.

I really appreciate that Princess cruise ships have self serve laundry facilities. It means I can pack less for a long cruise and do a quick load of laundry midway through the cruise.

The laundromats are located in the aft section of decks 8 to 14. I used my medallion purchased tokens from a vending machine in the laundry room which I then used in the washers or dryers. I brought my own detergent pods, but laundry soap was also available for purchase with the medallion.

The laundry room also had ironing boards and irons for guest’s use.

Ruby Princess entertainment

It’s hard to write specifics about the entertainment on board a cruise berceuse it changes with each cruise and with each week. Throughout the day there were numerous musical performances in the Piazza and in the lounges.

I am always impressed at the stage shows in the theater and at the talented singers and dancers that manage to do their routines as the ship is rocking back and forth. And the musicians in the band were equally talented.

The cruise director and his/her staff were very busy throughout the cruise with a variety of activities, games, competitions, and distractions for those that didn’t want to sit still.

My favorite “entertainments” though were the enrichment lecturers and the destination experts. On this cruise we had a Panama Canal expert that provided a lot of additional insight into the construction and management of the canal which really added to the overall Panama canal cruising experience.

Ruby Princess food review

Complimentary dining on the ruby princess.

I can honestly say I enjoyed all the food on the Ruby Princess and I took advantage of just about all of the dining options that were available to me.

At each location, the service was always fantastic and delivered with courtesy and efficiency and always with a smile. I found all the wait staff to be extremely personable and eager to please.

These complimentary dining options were all part of my standard fare cruise.

The Main Dining Rooms

All three main dining rooms (Da Vinci, Botticelli, Michelangelo) served the same menu each night for dinner. I could choose to make a reservation for the same time and the same restaurant each day or I could eat at a different restaurant at any time I chose.

The menu clearly identified vegetarian options. In addition, Princess has recently also developed a vegan dinner menu for those that follow such a diet.

Breakfast and lunch were served only in the Da Vinci dining room. This is also where Reserved dining was offered.

While I did not eat here every day because there were so many other options throughout the ship, I did eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner a number of times throughout the course of the cruise.

The menus always had something that appealed to me, especially when I wanted something on the lighter side. I liked that the portions were not huge which meant I could try a few items on the menu without getting overly full.

Afternoon Tea

On sea days, afternoon tea was also offered each day at 3 PM in the DaVinci dining room. Waiters came around with trays of bite sized sandwiches, mini desserts, and scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam. And of course tea.

I love afternoon tea so I made sure to give this a try a few times during the cruise. But then it was a light dinner that evening since I was quite full after tea time.

International Café

This was definitely one of my favorite food spots on the ship. I am a late riser and don’t like big breakfasts, so their options were ideal for me. I got into the habit of picking up breakfast here in the late morning and taking it back to my balcony.

My usual morning choice was a yogurt parfait and an almond croissant (though the pound cakes were also quite good). Afternoons or evenings I indulged in a dessert or two, or a few of their really good cookies.

The café also made very good specialty coffees and tea drinks (at an extra cost). I enjoyed a few morning cappuccinos and iced coffees from here during my cruise.

The International Café also offered light food fare like small sandwiches and quiches which were a great option for a quick snack or a light meal.

Horizon Court and Cafe Caribe Buffet

I did not eat here that often, but the buffet was my choice for a snack or a fast meal or if I did not feel like changing clothes for the main dining room. I really liked the individual portions of salads, chips, veggies, and other small bites, served up in glass cups and single dishes. International theme nights with dishes from a specific country were quite popular.

I also went up to Horizon Court to refill my water bottle during the day with ice water or iced tea, and to get hot tea (or coffee for those that drink it).

Slice Pizza and Coffee and Cones

I must confess that I really like pizza – a lot. This was my go to spot for lunch, along with a cup of chocolate ice cream since both were served at the same location.

I usually tried the daily specialty pizza (Mexican, Hawaiian and others) and liked them all.

Swirls was also the location for the freshly squeezed juices prepared each day.

Salty Dog Grill

This grill was quite busy at lunchtime as pool goers waited in line for their order. At dinner time however, I never had to wait.

If I was watching a Movie Under The Stars, then this was my go to dinner choice for food while watching the movie. The burgers were very good, but I really liked the North Carolina style pulled pork sandwich and had that a couple of times during the cruise.

Casual dining on the Ruby Princess

The casual dining venues on the Ruby were a minimal extra charge for me because I did not pre-purchase any of the Princess packages.

Salty Dog Gastro Pub

I was not able to try this dining restaurant on the Ruby, but did try it as one of the many dining options on the Discovery Princess .  The SDG burger with pork belly, gruyere, kimchi beer battered jalapeno, and charred onion aioli was interesting and so big I found it hard to eat. I did like the white tomato soup and specialty grilled cheese bites.

The Crab Shack Pop Up

The Crab Shack was not available when I sailed on the Ruby, but has since “popped” back. I have eaten at the Crab Shack on both the Discovery Princess and the Majestic Princess and loved the experience.

This bar is known for its diverse wine selection. But, I also liked it for the wonderful charcuterie board that I chose as a light supper one night.

Specialty dining on the Ruby Princess

The specialty restaurants were an additional charge for me, but I thought they were well worth the cost.

Crown Grill

I chose to eat here the first night of my cruise – it felt like a good way to celebrate the beginning of a special trip. Since I am not a big steak eater, I chose the French onion soup and the lobster – it was  definitely a good decision.

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria

I really liked the Italian dishes I tried at this specialty restaurant. I could pick one item from five different categories – soup or salad, antipasti, fresh pasta first course, main entre second course, and a dessert. This was way too much food, so I only did three items: a burrata appetizer, veal marsala and a delicious chocolate dessert.

Experiential Dining

Chef’s Table

I did not know about the special Chef’s Table dinner when I cruised on the Ruby Princess. It was only on my next cruise on the Sky Princess that I discovered this special event. I wrote all about it on my post Discovering the Sky Princess dining Options and the Chef’s Table Experience .

Offered to only 10-12 guests per sitting, the Chef’s Table is a multicourse specialty dinner that is held only a few times during each cruise. The meal could be purchased with or without a wine pairing. As I discovered, this event is a foodie’s delight. Next time, I’ll know to add my name to the Chef’s Table list as soon as I board the ship.

Balcony dining

I did not have a chance to experience balcony dining on the Ruby Princess, but I did do balcony breakfast dining on other Princess ships and loved starting a sea day with this truly indulgent experience. It was especially nice on a deeper balcony with a larger table so that there was room for all the food and drink – and it was a lot of food.

Balcony dining can be either a breakfast or dinner experience.

Room Service

For me, one of the best things about a cruise was getting room service delivered  – especially for breakfast or after a long day of sight seeing – and eating on the balcony. This is the ultimate luxury experience as far as I am concerned.

Travel tip:  There was no additional charge for ordering a room service breakfast via the breakfast card. However, without one of the Princess Packages, ordering room service or any type of delivery via the app or by phone incurred an extra charge.

Additional Ruby Princess cruise tips and information

The Medallion 

The Medallion is a waterproof, round electronic button that held all my personal Princess cruise information. Since I booked last minute, I picked up my medallion at check in at the port and wore it through the cruise on the provided lanyard. If I wanted something more fashionable, Princess sold a variety of Medallion accessories like chains and wristbands on board.

The Medallion automatically unlocked my room once I was within about 3-4 feet of my cabin door. I also used it for any on board charges for drinks, excursions, etc. It was also my identification to get back on the ship after getting off in port.

Right after boarding, I also had to check in to my muster station using my medallion.

The Princess Cruises App 

I used the Princess Cruises app to check in before my cruise. After downloading the app, I added all the requested information and worked my way through each screen until I was “Ocean Ready”. I chose to pick up my medallion at the port which put me in the “blue” check in lane.

Once I was on board, I could use the app to look at the scheduled activities, schedule dinner reservations, order room service, register for an excursion, order drinks to be delivered to my seat, track and find members in my cruising party, and look at my bill. All this was quite easy to do on my (newish) Samsung Android phone.

Interactive On Board Screens

Near each elevator, a large interactive screen displayed a map of the ship or the current activities going on throughout the ship. These touch screens were very easy and intuitive to use.

MedallionNet  Wi-Fi

I had the 4-device package for the full length of the trip so that I could use both my phone and my computer at the same time while on board. Signing up and logging into the Wi-Fi network was easy.

I used my sea days to catch up on blog writing and posting on this blog. I did not try streaming movies or music. Since Princess has switched to using Starlink, internet on the ships has been much faster.

Travel Tip – I switched my phone to Airplane Mode before leaving port so that I would not incur roaming charges. I used WhatsApp to connect with family and friends back home via texts or calls.

Princess Patter

On my cruise, my cabin steward dropped off the Princess Patter each night and it listed all the following day’s activities. This was an invaluable source of information.

Besides watching movies, TV programs, and listening to music, I was also able to watch the enrichment lectures that had been presented at the theater in the comfort of my cabin. I also watched the safety video on the TV right after I boarded.

As I said, I really enjoyed my Ruby Princess cruise through the Panama Canal – it gave me everything I was looking for.

If this is what it is like to live like a princess, then I could definitely get used to it! I will absolutely be doing this again!

I don't do live from posts but usually do a review when I get home.  That being said,  I am currently on the Ruby and having a wonderful time.  We got the invite to the Chef's Table,  signed up for the Super Tuscan lunch and my husband won $25 in Princess prizes. If you have any questions about the ship,  I'm happy to answer.

Nice of you to do that.  We just did that one end of Feb.  Weather was pretty good.

A nice tour that we always enjoy is Aviary tour in Cartegena. 

And we booked Sanctuary for Transit day. 

Its a good day to Stay Onboard that day. IMO

As almost half the ship got off mid transit for tours off ship.

We totally enjoyed staying onboard with Not as many people!

It's an Italian lunch with wine pairings. I don't think I've ever seen it advertised...evidently you're just supposed to know. We asked the head waiter at the embarkation lunch. $60 per person, held in Sabatinis.

They are really all the same,  just depends on location.  For dinner I think Botticelli is less crowded...DaVinci is more centrally located.

For us sharing one meal at Vines is a great option for dinner. It is a larger charcuterie plate than I get here Olympia Provisions and 6 truffles is really over the top. We have been known to give some away

@mamafun , I hope I am not being supercilious by telling you something you already know, but "Super Tuscan" is an informal term describing wines from the Italian region of Tuscany that do not conform to the traditional winemaking regulations of that region.  Typically, grapes that are not included in the regional laws are used for these wines.  As often as not, these "extra" grapes are ones that are common in the French region of Bordeaux--e.g., Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot--and are blended with Tuscany's most famous red grape--Sangiovese.  The best Super Tuscans are world class wines.  Princess regularly offers Luce della Vite and Tignanello Super Tuscans on the Sabatini's wine list, and they are both excellent, albeit, not inexpensive.  I would hope that at least one, if not both, of these would be served at a Super Tuscan Lunch.

HI, we are on the Ruby in a couple of weeks, have done many cruises but never on the Ruby.  What is the 'Adagio'?  Deck plan shows it on the Sun deck next to Sabatini's.  Just wondering if you know if it is a restaurant or lounge?

Yes, wish they would replace this cam…but part of it is the angle of the sun in the mornings.  There will be two more cams, one overlooking the Pedro Miguel locks, and the cam at Cocoli Locks.  Ship can also be seen passing by the Miraflores Locks.  They can be found at multimedia.panama-canal.com.  EM

Pedro Miguel cam…sorry I missed her passing, you can barely see her approaching the Cocoli Locks in the upper left.  And entering and leaving the first Cocoli Lock.

We spent most of the day on our Aft balcony. Wandered a bit but mostly just used our loungers.

Chef's table last night was excellent.  Great food and company.  It's held in Sabatinis on this ship. I really like the location of Sabatinis on this ship... great for breakfast.  We'll eat dinner there next week.  Today we did the full transit mainly from our aft balcony.  We've done it before so wanted a different vantage point. We got up at 6:30 as we entered the canal so tonight we're just going to do the casual dining at Vines and drink some good wine. It's really hot here.

It's a lovely little bar.  Very quiet. They had the suite get together up there and then meeting for the Chef's table last night. 

Do you have a medical emergency?  Otherwise, why are you heading back to Panama?  You are supposed to be halfway to Puntarenas…

No, we actually have a port day here before we head north. We went out to sea last night and then came back this morning
