Op welke manieren kan je op safari in Tanzania

Een safari in Tanzania kan je op drie manieren invullen:

• Self-drive safari: Alles zelf huren en zelf gaan rijden. Hier kozen wij voor, wát een avontuur
• Self-drive safari + gids: Je kunt zelf alles huren en zelf gaan rijden, maar wel met een eigen gids erbij.
• ‘All inclusive’ safari: Hier zit alles bij inbegrepen, wordt alles voor je geregeld en hoef je zelf nergens aan te denken.

De kosten die we hieronder noemen, zullen steeds in Amerikaanse dollars ($) zijn. Dat is de valuta waar deze organisaties mee werken. Afhankelijk van de wisselkoers op dat moment, kan je uitrekenen wat het je in euro’s kost. Hier kan je dus wat pech of geluk mee hebben.

Kosten self-drive safari

Totale kosten self-drive safari (per persoon per dag): – Bij de meeste verhuurbedrijven (zoals Fortes ): $290 – Bij Roadtrip Africa (de goedkoopste aanbieder): $240

Dit zijn de totale kosten per persoon per dag die je kwijt bent aan een zelf georganiseerde safari. Daarbij hebben we álle kostenposten meegenomen: huur van de jeep en de kampeerspullen, parkkosten, kosten voor de campings, brandstof en boodschappen.

Kosten self-drive safari (met gids)

Extra kosten gids (bij een self-drive safari): Een gids kost je een extra $40 per dag (per groep). Bovenop de hiervoor genoemde kosten voor een self-drive safari.

Gids Je kunt er ook voor kiezen om alles zelf te regelen en een gids bij te boeken. Mocht je het iets minder avontuurlijk willen aanpakken. Deze gids is geen chauffeur en je moet dus wel zelf rijden.

Fooi Waarschijnlijk verwacht deze gids ook nog een fooi van ongeveer $20 per dag (per groep). Hou hier rekening mee, of bespreek dit van tevoren goed met de organisatie waar je alles boekt.

Kosten ‘all inclusive’ safari

Er zijn vaak drie varianten te boeken van deze ‘all inclusive’ safari’s: budget (camping), mid-range lodges en luxe lodges. Hieronder vind je de gemiddelde prijzen.

It’s often difficult to figure out the right amount even with the help of the guide. Suggest to make the guide tip on behalf of the group taking the money from the safari pass or ask everybody to pay a small amount upfront (e.g. USD 10) to the guide.

Cape Town to the Serengeti: Deserts & Wilderness

Enjoyed the trip, saw lots of different animals, history and culture. Spent a lot of the time driving but the variety of game drives and optional activities created a good balance. The 2 groups I was a part of were great people and good company. The meals however were poor, felt our guide didn't try his best, majority of meals were cheap and our meal allowances were equivalent to $2-3 when given to eat on our long drives. He definitely could of done better with options especially after several comments and suggestions from our group. I didn't feel the food we got was anywhere the price I paid for the trip. Breakfasts consisted of cornflakes, weetabix, fruit and occasional yoghurt which was hidden and rationed along with museli. There were some days closer to the end where we got eggs, sausage and pancakes. Some individuals didn't even eat much overall because there wasn't much selection. Lunches consisted of processed meat sandwiches, apples and bananas for the most part. Dinners were rice, pasta, some vegetables and bread. The meat options were fine and more catered to I found. Unfortunately I felt that our guide wasn't organized with activities either, left everything to the last minute. He became more involved and active on the 2nd half of our journey with the group, for the first half he was a little reserved. Our driver was amazing and very accommodating and friendly. I would definetely do another G trip but would like to have a more outgoing and accommodating guide.

The Absolute Safari

What an absolute adventure 77 days from Kenya to South Africa! Safaris, lakes, lions, beaches, historical sites, village visits, camping, long drives with windows down, gorillas, family style cooking, washing dishes, early mornings, hippos, boat safaris, peeing on the side of the road, cold showers, card games, photos, are some of the words that instantly come to mind from thinking about the last 3 months. Originally I was booked from just Nairobi to Zanzibar and I’m so glad I ended up extending all the way to South Africa! Our group was on the larger side as it was during the busy season July-Oct and we had about 20-25 people on the bus during the 3 months. The amount of people can vary as there are smaller sections of the absolute overland trips where people will be with you for different legs of the trip. (Ex: some people started and finished Zanzibar or started Vic Falls to Cape town, etc.) The best thing I can recommend for an enjoyable trip is having the right expectations & mindset as these overland trips are definitely not for everyone. After the 3 months I believe I met around 40 different people on the safari who had stayed for a section or the whole safari and I could tell that most absolutely loved the overland trip, however, there were a few people that struggled as they did not have the right expectations. As I already mentioned, flexibility is key for this trip. I believe they make this very clear on their website but somehow some people still show up with a very rigid mindset. Some days go as planned, some days go better, and some go worse. But that is all part of the African experience. People on these trips are from all different backgrounds, with different personalities, work ethics, and ways of doing things. Just roll with it. FOOD. Please be flexible for the sake of everyone. You must remember that if there is a group of 20-25 everyone has to be catered to for their dietary needs. Most lunches you are on your own. There will be a supermarket stop and you can get as you wish. But for dinner there will be a cooking team for that specific night so depending on the dietary restrictions there might have to be 3 different meals if you have vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters. So I would definitely recommend being flexible when it comes to preferences. I wouldn’t recommend this trip for strict dietary restrictions (vegetarian ok but vegan, etc. not so much). Remember you are in Africa and there are weeks where the food options and supermarkets are limited. Staff. We had the same guide for the 77 days and 1 driver for the first 3/4 of the trip and then last 1/4 a different driver. Our guide and both drivers were from different parts of Africa and all had 10+ experience doing these tours. They are all very knowledgable & such helpful resources. They all speak multiple languages and handled the borders crossings and logistics professionally. They are the first people you see up in the morning and last people to bed making sure everything is in order. Our guide did a really good job at balancing all the different preferences of food, itinerary, etc. We had some unique characters in our group which made it pretty difficult for him to handle but he did a great job at balancing it for everyone. A great sense of humor and always had a positive outlook & willing to help. Truck. A bit older but honestly fit the 77 day across Africa vibe. The seats were comfy and there were plenty of outlets to charge electronics. The fridge wasn’t ideal as it was smaller especially after group food was in there. Facilities. Most camps we stayed were great and had what you needed. Wifi was kind of a joke, don't plan on much. Most campsites there "was" wifi but it rarely worked, especially when you have 25 people rolling up and wanting to get on. So a sim is a must if you care to be online, etc. 95% campsites had showers probably about 50-50 with hot water. Tents were surprisingly very comfortable. Plenty of space and sleeping pads were nice. Money. Plan to spend more than you think. You can do this trip with just doing the minimums but when everyone is going on an extra safari or an extra activity, you are going to want to do it as well. So many unique once in a lifestime opportunities, its hard to pass when in person. Maintain a positive attitude & energy. Although you don’t need to be “physically fit” this trip is demanding especially if you are doing the 77 days. There aren’t any necessary physically fit needs, but there are many early wake up calls, tearing down & setting up your tent everyday, and some nights you will be on cooking / cleaning duty, etc. It all adds up and you’re constantly on the move for months. That is all part of the adventure. You are going to meet tons of different people so you can imagine positive attitude is key. If you want a vacation to sit and chill on the beach this isn’t the trip for you. If you are ready to have an adventure of a lifetime and a unique experience meeting people from all around the world, seeing so many aspects of Africa from wildlife, villages, and hearing about the history and local customs you won’t be disappointed! Best advice have a flexible and positive outlook and you will have a great time! So glad I did it! Hindsight I would still recommend Absolute Africa especially knowing what I know now. Rushing down to South Africa or rushing the itinerary like some of the other tour companies isn’t something I wanted to do & I am glad I chose AA. Hope this helps!

Fantastic experience and great to see 4 very different areas. The guide was very good at spotting the more distant animals and the food was great. We were expecting to camp each night on this budget safari but 2 nights were in a cabin complex, which was a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended.

I and my other 3 friends have just returned home from a trip in Uganda and it has been a wonderful and memorable vacation. After a few days of looking for a travel company, we found Mukisa Safaris and we instantly decided to book with the company. This because Richard exercised exceptional professionalism and promptness. He was exceedingly helpful, accommodative in crafting out the best itinerary that suited the best interests of our group and it was indeed the best travel plan as it enabled us explore and navigate almost the entire country in just 2 weeks. We visited several parks including Kidepo, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, and Bwind Forest. Uganda is such a beautiful country with varying ecosystems that are incredible for nature lovers. During our entire vacation period in Uganda, our guide Veronica and driver John were amazing people. They were so friendly and they made us feel safe and comfortable. We miss moments of enjoying cutting and eating fruits with them and ofcourse their incredible stories. Importantly, they posses vast knowledge about their country about everything. We slept in eco friendly lodges that were very clean and served delicious meals. Uganda is exceptionally endowed with many animals and during the game drives we encountered many animals including the African Big 5. However, the experience of tracking gorillas is comparable to none. It's such an awesome experience seeing gorillas just close in a few meters. We shall return to Uganda for another experience with gorillas. We thank Mukisa Safaris for their exceptional services and we highly recommend their professional services.

African Safari Tour Reviews

The tour was very well organized. Everything worked up quite well and everyone took good care of us. It was a magnificent time in Tanzania's wild nature. Also the tour company took care of all changes online (one day early arrival and extra shira tour booking) in a flexible and timely manner. Our Safari guide and driver Israel did really a great job. He worked hard to find all the animals for us as good as possible. This wasn't an easy job as we were there during rain season. He kept us safe and well informed all the time. We saw many wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas and of course tons of Gnus, zebras and all kinds of antilopes, monkeys and birds. We could even see some of the big five like the lion from eye to eye, roaming around less than 1m from our vehicle! Of course there's no guaranty of which wild animals you'll see as we're talking about natural parks, but you can rest assured the guides are doing their best to show you what nature is offering during your visit. All the staff in the hotels, parks and people in general were very kind and very welcoming! The food was always good and safe. FYI, the actual safari is 5 days + 2 days arrival and departure. Nevertheless within these 5 days we saw so many places and had a unique nature experience. "Luxury" as mentioned in the title is a bit too much said, especially when it comes to accommodation. On the other hand all the hotel names/ratings and the exact itinerary were mentioned clearly so no surprises. The luxurious part was actually that we were only on our own since it's low season :) Our guide Israel was flexible and fulfilled every possible wish we had. The Maasai village tour in the way to Serengeti costs an extra 50$ which is a fair price but they will also offer you some overpriced hand-made souvenirs to buy. The tour itself was very interesting and nice including a welcome song and dance basically from the whole village :) The Serengeti Safari lounge was quite spacious and had a big balcony to enjoy the endless view of the Serengeti. That was definitely the best accommodation of the trip. We woke up to a great show of a huge group of Gnus and Zebras directly in front of our balcony. The very ones who were singing for us all night :) Last but not least: if you're wondering about the prices even for a day tour, you should know that the park fees including conservation fees are quite high. So you're basically contributing to the well-being of these parks as well as the many wonderful people protecting them.

A bit late with the review... The trip was November 2019 and it was the best trip ever!!! Simon best guide, stunning places, welcoming locals and amazing experiences! the flight over the Okavango Delta is highly recommended.

Canoe in the Okavango Delta

Where we stay on safari.

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

When is the best time to go on safari.

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colours is the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our ultimate Africa packing guide . 

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. 

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water). 

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance. 

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

Wat kost een safari in Zuid-Afrika?

Hoeveel kost een safari in zuid-afrika.

De prijs voor een safari reis naar Zuid-Afrika loopt erg uiteen. Een aantal factoren zijn erg bepalend voor de uiteindelijke totaalprijs van een rondreis door Zuid-Afrika, zoals de reisduur, het accommodatie niveau, de reisperiode, het aantal dagen op safari en het aantal personen. We komen hier later nog op terug. Over het algemeen moet je ervan uitgaan dat de safari’s in een privéreservaat in Zuid-Afrika vanaf zo’n € 400,- tot € 600,- per persoon per dag kosten. Hierbij gaan we uit van overnachtingen op middenklasse tot semi-luxe niveau (3 tot 4 sterren).Ga je in een Nationaal Park op safari, dan betaal je heel andere prijzen. Hier hoort ook een andere beleving bij. Wij lichten dit heel graag toe, want het is belangrijk om het verschil te weten voordat je een reis boekt.

Een safari in Zuid-Afrika, hoe werkt dat?

Hoewel de term ‘safari’ officieel ‘reis’ betekent, bedoelen we als we het hebben over een ‘safari in Zuid-Afrika’ over het algemeen letterlijk de safaribeleving in een wildpark; op zoek naar de ‘ Big 5 ‘. Zuid-Afrika is echter enorm qua oppervlakte, maar ook qua diversiteit. Afhankelijk van jouw reiswensen kan een aantal dagen ‘op safari’ combineren met een rondreis vol natuur met mooie landschappen, cultuur en stad.

De gemiddelde prijs voor een rondreis in Zuid-Afrika is echter heel anders dan de prijs die je gemiddeld kwijt bent voor een safari beleving. En dan bestaat er ook nog het verschil tussen op safari gaan in een privéreservaat versus een Nationaal Park. 

Van welke factoren is de prijs van een safari in Zuid-Afrika afhankelijk?

Wil je een realistisch en betrouwbaar beeld van wat jouw safari door Zuid-Afrika kost, vraag je dan eerst onderstaande zaken af. Hieronder vind je de factoren die de grootste invloed hebben op de totaalprijs van een safari in Zuid-Afrika. Klik op de tabs voor meer uitleg:

Hoe lang wil je op safari in Zuid-Afrika?

Allereerst is de prijs voor een rondreis in Zuid-Afrika afhankelijk van de reisduur. Dat betekent letterlijk het aantal dagen dat je op reis gaat, maar daarnaast ook het aantal dagen van jouw reis dat je daadwerkelijk op safari gaat.

Naast ‘op safari gaan’ kan je in Zuid-Afrika nog veel meer zien en doen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan

• de beroemde Panoramaroute met al haar mooie uitzichtpunten,
• de Drakensbergen voor de actieve wandelaar/hiker,
• de wereldberoemde Tuinroute langs de zuidkust,
• het bruisende Kaapstad ,
• de culinaire wijnlanden zoals Stellenbosch en Franschhoek ,
• Hermanus met seizoensgebonden de walvissen.

En ga zo maar door..

Specifiek over de kosten voor een safari in Zuid-Afrika lees je het volgende tabblad.

Om je een idee te geven kan je een overnachting buiten de nationale parken bijvoorbeeld al voor € 50 per persoon per nacht boeken. Echter kost een overnachting in een nationaal park al snel meer dan het dubbele. Houd er rekening mee dat je vervolgens wel de safari’s nog los moet boeken ofwel zelf moet rijden in de Nationale Parken en je ter plekke de entreegelden betaalt.

Ga je op safari in een privéreservaat dan gelden weer hele andere prijzen. Houd voor een middenklasse lodge rekening met prijzen vanaf zo’n € 300-400 per persoon per nacht. Als je echter door beschikbaarheids uitdagingen moet uitwijken naar semi-luxe lodges, verdubbelt de prijs al snel. De prijzen in privéreservaten zijn echter wel heel compleet. Alle safari’s, entreegelden en conservation fees en alle maaltijden zitten reeds inclusief.

Welk type accommodaties kies je?

Zoals je ook bij de reisduur en safari accommodaties kan lezen, is de keuze van het accommodatieniveau van grote invloed op de prijs per nacht en in veelvoud op de totaalprijs. Het voordeel van Zuid-Afrika is er een groot aanbod aan mooie hotels is vanaf eenvoudig niveau tot high-end, waardoor ook een combinatie van verschillende niveaus erg goed mogelijk is. Wij hebben zeker onze favorieten op de verschillende plekken, door bijvoorbeeld de bijzondere ligging, de service of een uitzonderlijk verfijnde keuken. Maar ook voor families hebben we persoonlijke voorkeuren en kiezen we graag accommodaties uit die een ideale kamerindeling beschikbaar hebben en/of een verfrissend zwembad.

Wanneer reis je naar Zuid-Afrika?

De reisperiode kan je eigenlijk weer opdelen in twee. Enerzijds is de prijs afhankelijk van de seizoenen in Zuid-Afrika. Onthoud ook dat Zuid-Afrika onder de evenaar ligt en daardoor de seizoenen precies andersom zijn dan. De schoolvakanties vallen natuurlijk jaarlijks anders, dus hiervoor kijken we graag in elk specifiek geval mee.

Anderzijds worden de prijzen bepaald door de schoolvakanties hier. Over het algemeen liggen de prijzen van vliegtickets bij vluchtdata die in de bouwvak of kerstvakantie vallen een stuk hoger dan op een willekeurige datum in mei. 

Hoe verplaats je je van A naar B in Zuid-Afrika?

Ook het type vervoer is van grote invloed op de prijs. Kies je voor een selfdrive rondreis door Zuid-Afrika of wil je bijvoorbeeld vliegen tussen verschillende locaties? Dit laatste wordt veelal gedaan tussen de meer afgelegen parken. in Zuid-Afrika, maar ook om de regio van Johannesburg en Kruger te combineren met Kaapstad en/of de Tuinroute .

In de regel zijn vluchten duurder dan de prijs van een auto per dag. Bovendien deel je de autohuur prijs natuurlijk door het aantal personen (en wordt. het voordeliger naarmate je met meer personen reist) en blijft de vluchtprijs per persoon gelijk. 

Met wie maak jij je reis door naar Zuid-Afrika?

In Zuid-Afrika (ervan uitgaande dat je rondreist per huurauto) is de prijs afhankelijk van de grootte van het gezelschap. De prijs per persoon wordt deels bepaald door de vaste prijs per dag van de huurauto (met verzekering). Hoe groter het reisgezelschap is, hoe meer reizigers deze huurprijs delen. Houd er wel rekening mee dat dit enkel geldt voor reizen over land. Vlieg je, dan betaal je een ticket per persoon en is de grootte van het reisgezelschap niet van invloed op de prijs van dit deel van de reis.

Maak je een rondreid met z’n tweeën, het gezin of een hele familie door Zuid-Afrika?

Reis je met kinderen, dan genieten zij vaak van een kinderkorting. Hoe jonger de kinderen zijn, hoe hoger de korting is. Kinderen tot 2 jaar zijn vaak zelfs gratis. Familiekamers zijn vaak verhoudingsgewijs ook goedkoper dan bijvoorbeeld twee tweepersoonskamers. Kanttekening is wel dat familiekamers ook veel schaarser zijn. Dus heeft dit je voorkeur, boek dan op tijd! 

Daarnaast is het ook goed om te weten dat er vaak minimum leeftijden gelden in de safariparken. Deze verschillen per park/locatie. Wij zoeken uiteraard naar de geschikte plekken voor jullie reisgezelschap!

Wat zit er inclusief in de prijs van een safari in Zuid-Afrika?

Houd er rekening mee dat als je naar prijzen kijkt voor een safari in Tanzania dat het een verzameling is van verschillende subonderdelen. Zo betaal je voor de accommodaties, voor de parkentreegelden en/of conservation fees, voor het vervoer van en naar het park (dit kan een transfer zijn maar ook een huurauto). Daarnaast zitten alle safari’s en maaltijden inbegrepen in de accommodatie prijs voor de lodges die in de privereservaten gelegen zijn.

Wat een safari in Zuid-Afrika daadwerkelijk kost is dus afhankelijk van meerdere factoren. Over het algemeen geldt, hoe groter het reisgezelschap, hoe voordeliger de rondreis per persoon wordt. 

Hoe lang ga je gemiddeld op safari in Zuid-Afrika?

Doordat de meeste reizen in Zuid-Afrika zo gevarieerd zijn qua programma, zien we doorgaans dat men op twee verschillende plekken in Zuid-Afrika op safari gaat, tezamen zo’n 4 à 5 safari-overnachtingen en dat afwisselt met andere locaties binnen het land om op deze manier een mooie diverse rondreis door Zuid-Afrika te maken. 

Hoe langer de safari is, hoe hoger de kosten. En deze stijgt significant meer bij elke safari dag dan bij een dag in Kaapstad, de Wijnlanden of in een dorpje langs de Tuinroute.

Voorbeeldreis van een tweeweekse safari naar Zuid-Afrika

Een goed voorbeeld daarvan is onze inspiratiereis: Panoramaroute & safari . Een geweldige reis als basis, die je makkelijk kan uitbreiden met een verblijf in Kaapstad of een selfdrive langs de verschillende stops op de Tuinroute, maar ook een aantal dagen hiken in de Drakensbergen, of relaxen aan de oostkust.

Extra kosten (vooraf en ter plaatse)

Doorgaans moet je rekening houden met nog wat extra kosten die niet in het reisvoorstel bij Safari Atelier zijn inbegrepen. De intercontinentale vluchten die passen bij de door jullie opgevraagde reis vermelden wij wel altijd (indien gewenst) inclusief een op dat moment geldende prijs in het reisvoorstel. Op de website zijn alle genoemde prijzen echter exclusief intercontinentale vluchten genoemd. Niet om je te misleiden overigens, maar omdat de prijzen enorm uiteenlopen en het juist een misleidend beeld kan geven als we er wel een vaste prijs aan hangen.

Daarnaast moet je voor Zuid-Afrika rekening houden met:

• Brandstof voor de huurauto
• Eventuele tol voor de gekozen tolwegen in Zuid-Afrika
• Fooien voor de accommodaties/ personeel en gids ter plaatse

Safari kosten & prijsopbouw

De kosten van een safari zijn erg variërend en worden door veel factoren beïnvloed. Dit betekent dan ook dat de vanaf prijzen een zeer ruwe indicatie zijn. Je kan beter eerst op je manier van reizen zoeken voordat je op prijs gaat vergelijken.

Waarom zijn safari's duur?

Over het algemeen kan je stellen dat een safari reis niet goedkoop is. Maar aan de andere kant kan een weekje wintersport duurder uitkomen. Het is dus van belang de prijs in verhouding te zien met wat je er voor krijgt en welke extra kosten er wel of niet bij komen.

De inkomsten van toerisme zijn zeer belangrijk voor landen in Afrika. Dit resulteert in kosten voor een visum maar met name in hoge kosten voor toegang tot de Nationale Parken. US$ 50,- tot $80,- per persoon per 24 uur is redelijk gemiddeld in Oost-Afrika, rond de €20,- per dag in Zuidelijk Afrika.

Wanneer we naar de safari bestemmingen kijken moet er eigenlijk een splitsing gemaakt worden tussen Oost-Afrika en Zuidelijk Afrika. Er zijn grote verschillen in infrastructuur en manier van reizen (self-drive of begeleid) tussen de twee regio's.

Wat beïnvloedt de reissom van een safari?

De volgende factoren hebben een grote invloed op de prijs van een safari.

Groeps- of privéreis

Wellicht voor de hand liggend, maar over het algemeen is een groepsreis goedkoper dan een privéreis. Hierbij gaan we er vanuit dat het programma en de accommodatie vergelijkbaar is. De vaste lasten worden door meerdere personen gedragen waardoor de reissom per persoon lager uitkomt.

Accommodatie

De keuze van accommodatie heeft vanzelfsprekend een grote invloed op de totale reissom. Verblijf in kleine guesthouses of kamperen is natuurlijk veel goedkoper dan wanneer je in luxe resorts en safari lodges verblijft. Overigens kan je het wat betreft exclusiviteit bijna zo gek maken als je zelf wilt. Zeer exclusieve mobile camps, diep in de prachtigste natuurparken kosten zo $600,- per persoon per nacht.

Gelukkig worden bij de meeste safari reizen de accommodaties vermeld, zodat je zelf een beeld kan krijgen van je overnachtingen tijdens de reis. Het is natuurlijk ook leuk om bij een privé rondreis af en toe wat exclusiever te overnachten. Je reisorganisatie kan je daar zeker over adviseren.

Verblijf binnen of buiten de Nationale Parken

Wanneer er verschil in prijs zit tussen vergelijkbare programma's kan het goed zijn dat de accommodatie van een verschillend niveau is, maar ook dat de accommodatie niet in de Nationale Parken ligt maar daar net buiten.

Is dit erg? Nee, want er zijn over het algemeen geen hekken dus ook buiten de parkgrenzen lopen de wilde dieren rond. Het betekent wel dat er vaak eerst even naar de entree gereden moet worden voordat je 's ochtends aan je game drive kan beginnen.

Eenpersoonstoeslag

Let op, een eenpersoonstoeslag voor accommodatie bij safari lodges kan behoorlijk oplopen. De reden hiervoor is de beperkte capaciteit van de lodges en daardoor dus het hoge effect van een persoon minder die betaald.

Vervoer tijdens je rondreis in Afrika

Oost afrika.

In Oost Afrika, Tanzania, Kenia, Oeganda, Ethiopië, Rwanda en Malawi, is het niet gebruikelijk om zelf op pad te gaan. Dit betekent dat zowel de privé- als groepsreizen begeleid zijn. Er is ook zeer beperkte infrastructuur dus buiten de steden en strandbestemmingen is het programma alles inclusief. Wegen kunnen zeer slecht zijn en bewegwijzering is minimaal tot niet aanwezig. In de parken in Tanzania ben je bijvoorbeeld verplicht om een gekwalificeerde gids bij je te hebben.

Omdat de wegen slecht zijn, wordt er nagenoeg alleen in 4x4 safari auto's en busjes gereden. De auto's zijn gesloten en hebben een pop-up dak dat open gaat tijdens de 'game drives' in de parken. De kosten van huur (gebruik en onderhoud) van dit soort auto's ligt aanzienlijk hoger dan een standaard huurauto waar je in Zuid-Afrika mee uit de voeten kan.

Het is het meest kostenbesparend om de "vaste lasten" te delen. Met kleine groepjes van 6 tot 8 personen heb je aan één safari auto of busje met chauffeur genoeg.

Zuidelijk Afrika

Zuidelijk Afrika is een ander verhaal. De infrastructuur is goed en je kunt er perfect de zogeheten selfdrive safari's ondernemen. Er zijn veel concurrerende auto verhuurbedrijven. Hierdoor zijn prijzen van autohuur een stuk vriendelijker dan in Oost-Afrika.

Je eigen reiskeuze, comfort en route bepaalt wat voor type auto geschikt is en daardoor de prijs. Wil je "off the beaten track" gaan en met een 4x4 naar afgelegen plekken gaan, dan betaal je daar natuurlijk meer voor dan voor een Peugeotje 404 om rustig over de verharde wegen van Zuid-Afrika (en Kruger National Park) te rijden.

Park entree en excursies

Kijken kijken niet kopen of aanzitten, maar wel betalen. Een groot stuk van je reissom gaat naar entreegelden van de Nationale Parken. Dit betalen we natuurlijk graag om de wonderen van de natuur te zien maar met name ook voor het behoud van de parken. Desondanks maakt het een safari wel duurder dan een strandvakantie of rondreis door Azië.

Ook voor de auto en chauffeur moet apart worden betaald. Soms is de prijs per persoon lager, maar betaal je weer veel voor de auto of vice versa. Een optelsom die alles bij elkaar goed in de papieren kan lopen.

Inmiddels begint er een redelijk overzicht te komen van de kosten van een safari. Er is ook vermeld dat reisbegeleiding invloed heeft op de prijs. Hierbij moet echter wel een duidelijk onderscheid gemaakt worden tussen lokale begeleiding of Nederlandse reisbegeleiding. Een Nederlandse gids, zeker als die vanuit Nederland meereist, is vanzelfsprekend duurder dan een lokale gids. Over het algemeen wordt er alleen gebruik gemaakt van Nederlandstalige gidsen bij groepsreizen.

In verhouding tot de totale reissom zijn de kosten van een lokale gids of reisbegeleiding erg beperkt. Zeker wanneer het tegen het comfort en gemak wordt afgewogen. De lokale gids heeft veel kennis, kan wilde dieren goed 'spotten' en is een bron van informatie. Je kan genieten van je omgeving en hoeft je over de route, juiste afslag en afstanden geen zorgen te maken ... vakantie ten top!

Of je één of meerdere gidsen hebt is afhankelijk van het type safari en de manier waarop je rondreist.

Het is gebruikelijk om je gids een fooi te geven. Hoeveel is moeilijk te zeggen; reis je samen of in een groep, ging hij door de moties of heb je een super tijd gehad, was je lang of kort onderweg. Het zijn allemaal dingen die invloed hebben op wat je aan fooi wil geven.

Wat belangrijk is om te weten, is dat de fooi voor een lokale gids een zeer aanzienlijk deel van het inkomen is en dat er vaak meerdere families van eten, zeker in Oost-Afrika. Het kan geen kwaad om je van te voren bij je reisorganisatie hierover te laten informeren en er ook in je safari begroting rekening mee te houden. Dit geeft ook wat rust tegen het einde van je vakantie, wanneer je afscheid gaat nemen.

De kosten van een safari

Wat kost een safari nu precies? Helaas is zo’n unieke en onvergetelijke reis niet heel goedkoop. We zullen in dit blog de opbouw van de kosten beschrijven en een indicatie geven van de prijzen.

De kosten van een Tanzania safari of rondreis bestaan uit drie onderdelen:

• Entreegeld voor de nationale parken
• Huur van de jeep en privé-gids
• Accommodaties

Hoe zijn de kosten opgebouwd?

Van deze drie onderdelen van een safari zijn de entreegelden een gegeven. De prijzen voor het transport staan ook vast, maar worden per persoon goedkoper als je de jeep met meerdere personen deelt. De kosten van de accommodaties staan niet vast; een rondreis met onze Silver categorie hotels zal goedkoper uitvallen dan wanneer je voor Gold of Platinum gaat.

Wat kost een safari per dag?

Als je met twee personen op reis gaat en in onze Silver categorie hotels verblijft, kost een safari tussen de 430 en 450 euro per persoon per dag. Ga je met vier personen (en verdeel je dus de transportkosten over meer personen), dan liggen de kosten tussen de 380 en 400 euro per persoon per dag.

Om een voorbeeld te geven: Stel je gaat met twee personen op safari in de Ngorongoro krater. Dan betaal je meteen al 300 dollar voor de jeep met gids aan autohuur, benzine en entreekosten voor het park. Op moment dat je de Conservation Area binnenrijdt, betaal je bovendien 78,50 dollar per persoon aan entreegeld voor jullie zelf. Daal je dan ook nog eens af in de krater (de Ngorongoro Conservation Area is veel groter dan alleen de krater), dan betaal je daarbij 300 dollar per auto per dag. En dan moet je natuurlijk nog ergens slapen…

Alles bij elkaar zorgt dit voor behoorlijk hoge prijzen. In ruil daarvoor ben je natuurlijk wel in een van de mooiste natuurgebieden ter wereld!

Waarom adviseren wij toch te kiezen onze Silver categorie hotels?

Door onze goede relatie met onze Silver categorie hotels kunnen wij deze hotels aanbieden voor een supermooie prijs in verhouding tot de kwaliteit die ze leveren. Het zijn dus zeker geen budget hotels! Tanzania Specialist heeft vier medewerkers ter plaatse die regelmatig alle hotels inspecteren. Zij hebben de taak ervoor te zorgen dat onze Silver categorie hotels schone kamers, goede service en mooie uitzichten bieden voor een goede prijs.

Veel aanbieders geven aan dat kamperen in een koepeltent tijdens de safari goedkoper is. Uit ons onderzoek blijkt dat dit alleen in de  Serengeti  het geval is. In alle andere parken kost een verblijf in onze Silver categorie hotels net zoveel als slapen in een koepeltentje op de camping. Wij pleiten er daarom voor om altijd tenminste voor Silver categorie hotels te gaan en niet te proberen een paar tientjes te besparen (want meer zal het niet zijn) door naar budgethotels of campings te gaan. Want wie heeft nu niet voor hetzelfde geld liever de luxe van een lekker bed, heerlijke kamers en mooie uitzichten bij het zwembad?

Ook nog naar strand?

Een verblijf op Zanzibar is gelukkig een stuk goedkoper dan de safari. Zo kun je bijvoorbeeld al in een van onze Silver categorie hotels verblijven voor € 35,- per persoon per nacht. En dan zit je wel in het mooiste dorpje van Zanzibar, direct aan het strand!

Wij adviseren om bij een aanvraag goed duidelijk te maken wat voor budget jullie hebben voor deze vakantie. Door te spelen met het aantal dagen safari en aantal dagen strand, kunnen wij vervolgens een mooie reis op maat voor jullie samenstellen!

Planning a safari in Botswana

Why botswana.

Water-based safaris, exclusivity, privacy and high-quality camps in captivating areas: Botswana is one of Africa’s premier wildlife-watching destinations. Its prolific wildlife inhabits extraordinary landscapes, including the Chobe River, the Okavango Delta  and the salt pans of Makgadikgadi .

The easiest choice for your trip,  Chobe National Park is home to the world’s largest concentration of elephants, as well as a host of easy-to-spot big cats, buffaloes, giraffes and zebras, making it perfect for first-timers. The best way to see Africa’s elephant capital is to board a boat and cruise the Chobe River’s wildlife-rich shores. From here, you can travel into the Okavango Delta, where you can splurge on a luxury safari and take a mokoro  (dugout canoe) through the wetlands, before forging on into the Makgadikgadi salt pans to mingle with meerkats.

Botswana’s appeal and ease, however, come with a (big) caveat: the cost. To avoid the pitfalls of mass tourism, most luxury lodges and camps lie in concession areas rented out by the government to enforce a high-value, low-volume responsible-tourism strategy. The best reserves sit in the swamps of the Okavango Delta, and visitors fly in on small bush planes from Maun or Kasane. Mobile safaris – group trips that take you from site to site, often involving camping along the way – are a more cost-effective alternative: you can combine time in  Moremi Game Reserve  with Chobe National Park.

Best time to visit for a safari in Botswana

The high and dry season from June to October is the best wildlife-watching time , and also when water levels are generally at their highest in the Okavango Delta, allowing you to glide along the channels in a mokoro .

Where to stay on safari in Botswana

In and around Chobe National Park, we recommend  Chobe Game Lodge , Chobe Safari Lodge  and Chobe Bakwena , with Chobe Game Lodge being the only one inside the park. For photographers, Pangolin Chobe Hotel has specialist boats with swivel seats and gimbal mounts to snap that Attenborough moment on the Chobe River.

You can combine Chobe with the Okavango Delta through scheduled group mobile safaris with Bush Ways or Letaka . If you’re after a luxury experience in an exceptionally wild, isolated area, Mombo Camp is probably the Okavango’s most exclusive and legendary lodge, with predators galore (and a pretty price tag). Mma Dinare Camp (which offers affordable road transfers), 4 Rivers Camp , Shinde Camp and Camp Moremi are well situated for spotting excellent big game. Xugana Island Lodge , Setari Camp and Mopiri Camp are wonderful for experiencing the waterways, and offer fishing and birding opportunities by boat. Mogotlho Safari Lodge is also accessible for self-drivers, and occupies a lovely position on the Khwai River near Mababe. Want a more adventurous, budget-friendly option? Try a fully catered, accommodated mokoro campout excursion that departs from Sitatunga Camp , south of Maun.

Trips to meet the cute meerkats of the Makgadikgadi salt pans can be arranged through San Camp, Jack’s Camp or Camp Kalahari, with Planet Baobab as the best budget-friendly option with self-drive access.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Botswana

Stays at isolated camps in the Okavango Delta start at roughly $650 per person, per night and can go up to an eye-watering $4000 a night. At approximately $300, Chobe National Park lodges are more affordable – so stretch out your days here to keep costs down. For better pricing on accommodations, travel during the shoulder season (April to May and October to November). Finally, check the distance between your luxury lodge and Maun to reduce the return-ticket cost. Some camps offer road transfers or boating access between camps to minimize travel costs.

Planning a safari in Kenya

Kenya ’s wildlife offering is outstanding, with the Great Migration in particular at the top of many bucket lists – so it’s no surprise that safaris have been a thing in Kenya since the very concept was invented (indeed, safari translates to “journey” in Swahili). Do keep in mind, though, that this track record does make Kenya one of the busiest, most popular wildlife destinations on the continent.

A renowned annual phenomenon, the Great Migration sees millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River from the Serengeti in southern Tanzania into Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve . The country’s semi-nomadic Maasai communities and their time-honored warrior traditions are another source of fascination. Visitors can support community-powered tourism by visiting the private reserves surrounding the Mara, which are leased to different safari companies. A guided bush walk with a Maasai warrior will let you experience this culture’s deep connection with the land.

The main safari circuit couples Lake Nakuru with the Masai Mara and Amboseli (where Mt Kilimanjaro provides a staggering backdrop). Tsavo West , Tsavo East and Samburu are popular add-ons, if you have extra time. Any combination of these parks should ensure ample sightings of big cats, plenty of elephants, a few rhinos and all of the plains animals, such as buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and all manner of gazelle and antelope species. Want even more? Extend your stay by another week and scale Mt Kenya , Africa’s second-highest peak (after Kilimanjaro).

Most travelers just pass through Nairobi , staying long enough to visit Nairobi National Park . An extraordinarily well-stocked park on the cusp of one of Africa’s largest cities and easily accessible, Kenya’s original game reserve has wildlife in abundance, from lions, leopards, and buffaloes to the endangered black rhino and around 400 species of birdlife.

Generally, Kenya is viewed as a better choice for family safaris, those on a budget and those on a tight timeline.

Best time to visit for a safari in Kenya

July to October and January to February are the best times to see the Great Migration, when a million-plus wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, cross the crocodile-infested Mara River to graze on the lush grasses of the Masai Mara. With unrestricted visitor numbers, some areas can get crowded.

Where to stay on safari in Kenya

Kenya has hundreds of excellent lodges and tented camps, standards of service from local staff are generally high, and tour operators are experts at the logistics of moving between national parks for each leg of your safari itinerary.

Cottar’s 1920s Camp has entertained guests in high style for over 100 years, while “gentle on the earth” takes on a whole new meaning at Emboo River Camp , whose team will have you floating through the grasslands of the Masai Mara in the region’s first electric game drive vehicles.

Good value but still luxurious, Ol Tukai Lodge sits within Amboseli Park, with views of Kilimanjaro from the bar; nearby Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge is a comfortable family-friendly option. In Nairobi,  Giraffe Manor  provides a memorable breakfast spread before a visit to the city’s park; all accommodations in the upmarket Karen and Langata areas are close to the main entrance.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Kenya

Masai Mara National Reserve is the most wallet-friendly location for seeing the wildebeest migration. Despite having a shorter migration season, Kenya has more flights, more tourists, stiffer competition and a greater variety of affordable accommodations than next-door Tanzania. Expect to pay anything from $150 to $1000 per person, per night.

For a cheaper safari, book between the short and long rains (January to March), when prices are usually lower than during the peak season. Nairobi National Park charges $40 to non-residents for entry, while admission to Masai Mara is $80 for 24 hours if you stay outside the reserve, and $70 if you stay inside.

Planning a safari in Namibia

Why namibia.

Two reasons: self-driving independence and dramatic desert scenery. While a 4WD African safari is always an ambitious undertaking, Namibia has good roads, well-equipped campsites and reasonably priced rental vehicles. This is one of the easiest Southern African countries to explore from the driver’s seat.

The classic circuit starts in Windhoek , where you’ll rent a fully equipped 4WD camper van or a decent gravel-road car. From there, you’ll head to Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert for incredible vistas, circle up to Swakopmund for coastal adventures and end at Etosha National Park , where elephants, rhinos and giraffes strut their stuff.

Etosha is Namibia’s version of South Africa’s Kruger National Park, with roads and facilities suitable for a self-driving budget safari. Each public camp overlooks a busy water hole, where game moves in and out to drink during the dry season. The camp is floodlit by night, which means you won’t need to leave once you settle in.

Best time to visit for a safari in Namibia

Etosha is well-known for its productive water holes, and peak game viewing is from June to October, when wildlife flocks to these oases dotted throughout the park. This is also a cooler time of year to climb the dramatic dunes such as  Dune 45 at Sossusvlei.

Where to stay on safari in Namibia

Arranging everything through the  Gondwana Collection is hands-down the easiest and best way to organize a self-driving safari. This group has a portfolio of accommodations in all the key tourist spots, ranging from well-serviced campsites to glamping tents and swank lodges filled with character. Favorites include the quirky Desert Grace and Namib Dune Star Camp (with its alfresco beds) near Sossusvlei, and The Delight in Swakopmund. A sister company,  Namibia2Go , offers car rentals with comprehensive insurance.

As an alternative, you can book campsites and chalets inside the parks with the government-run Namibia Wildlife Resorts . Okaukuejo Rest Camp lies inside the perimeter of Etosha and is the place to watch at the water hole.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Namibia

At about $800, a full week’s vehicle rental is cheaper than a single night’s stay at a luxury lodge in the Okavango Delta. Due to the vast distances between destinations in Namibia, however, fuel expenses can add up fast. National parks and private campsites offer affordable camping fees, though luxury accommodations will (understandably) be more expensive. For camping, expect to pay $20 to $50 per person, per night for camping; for lodges, $100 to $300.

Expect bush, beach and fine wine. From iconic Kruger National Park to the picturesque landscapes of KwaZulu-Natal , South Africa offers a safari experience that caters to all levels of adventurers. 

Kruger is the easiest and most rewarding safari destination for first-timers and budget travelers. You can see the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes), as well as cheetahs, giraffes, African wild dogs and hundreds of bird species. Drive the park’s paved roads yourself if you’re on a budget, or visit private reserves like Sabi Sands or Thornybush for exclusive guided experiences, plus a better chance to see the Big Five in a short period.

Lesser-known reserves in KwaZulu-Natal are equally impressive. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is just as accessible as Kruger from the city of Durban , and has excellent facilities for travelers on all budgets; expect to spot rhinos, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes and wildebeest. (The big cats are a little more challenging to see here.) Nearby Phinda Private Game Reserve offers stunning high-end stays – plus the possibility of a beach day or scuba diving at Sodwana Bay .

Madikwe Game Reserve in North West Province is close to the Botswana border and a four-hour drive from Johannesburg , making it popular for South Africans looking for a safari. It’s also a malaria-free option for families with young children.

Combine any of these safari parks with a flight south to Cape Town , and you’ll add fine wine, world-class restaurants and a seaside safari – visiting the  African penguins of Boulders Beach – to your itinerary.

Best time to visit for a safari in South Africa

While South Africa is a year-round destination , most visitors love the cooler, dry season between May and August. During these months, wildlife is easier to spot as vegetation is more sparse and animals gather around water holes.

Where to stay on safari in South Africa

There are plenty of affordable self-catering rest camps in Kruger National Park and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi run by SANParks , the government parks agency. Kruger’s southern zone is prime game-viewing territory, with Skukuza , Lower Sabie and Letaba rest camps all favorites. Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi has terrific views, while Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is a superb, privately run option that supports the local community.

Plush camps and lodges in the private reserves come with highly trained guides who can take you out on foot or by vehicle. You can’t go wrong at Saseka in Thornybush, Dulini in Sabi Sands, Tanda Tula in  Timbavati , Jaci’s Safari Lodge in Madikwe or any of the &Beyond accommodations in Phinda.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in South Africa

Rates range from $100 to $200 per person, per night in government-run camps. Mid-range prices start at $300 to $700 per person, per night, with a corresponding bump in accommodation and guiding quality.

Planning a safari in Tanzania

Why tanzania.

Limitless plains, the epic migration and relaxing dips in the Indian Ocean. Tanzania ’s northern safari circuit includes the amazing  Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater . Exploring these places for 10 days to two weeks is a sure way to fall in love with Africa. You should consider adding a few days on the island of Zanzibar  (officially called Unguja) to make your dream trip even more memorable.

Tanzania and Kenya share similarities, both having plentiful wildlife parks and excellent safari operators. Tanzania’s vibe, though, is generally less stressful – perhaps due to the fact that the Serengeti is nearly 10 times bigger than Kenya’s Masai Mara, offering endless horizons and greater habitat variety.

In the heart of the Serengeti, the Seronera River provides big-cat and herbivore sightings year round, making it popular with visitors. Kogatende and Lamai, on the Mara River, are ideal for observing river crossings – with fewer tourists. Private reserves such as  Grumeti allow viewings of the migration without the crowds (and for a price).

The Ngorongoro Crater is only a short drive to the east from the Serengeti. In this giant collapsed volcano (or caldera), animals like lions, elephants and black rhinos are enclosed as they prowl a complete ecosystem of pretty plains and dramatic forests. Note that such assets do draw the crowds in peak season.

Best time to visit for a safari in Tanzania

Plan a visit between January and March to witness the migration of wildebeest – and their newborns – passing through the Ngorongoro and Ndutu regions. (Get as early a start as possible to avoid day-trippers.) The best time to witness the famous wildebeest river crossings in the Serengeti is during the peak season, from July to August.

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is an upmarket accommodation inspired by traditional Tanzanian architecture; its popular mobile-safari offering is Kiota Camp. On the coast, Chumbe Island in Zanzibar/Unguja is a highly rated, ecofriendly property that offers sensational snorkeling in a protected marine reserve. In the historic heart of  Stone Town , the best-value stay is Zanzibar Coffee House , dating from the 19th century.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Tanzania

Expect to pay anything from $250 to $950 per room, per night, during your stay in Tanzania. Entry fees at Serengeti National Park for foreign tourists are $70 (peak season) and $60 (low season). To visit the Ngorongoro Crater, you’ll pay $250 for a vehicle, in addition to the same entry fee. These fees are typically included in organized safari packages.

Track rhinos, witness an awe-inspiring cascade and join a walking safari to experience nature up close. Indeed,  Zambia is celebrated worldwide as the birthplace of the safari on foot, during which, under the guidance of two armed rangers, rhino tracking in nearby Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park will bring you close to these magnificent animals – only a taste of what’s to come at South Luangwa.

Livingstone , the tourist capital of Zambia, lets you gaze at another (non-living) marvel: mighty Mosi-oa-Tunya, better known as  Victoria Falls . If the 935 cu meters (33,000 cu ft) of water that pours over the falls each second is not heart-pumping enough, there are plenty of other thrilling activities to enjoy , such as white-water rafting on the Zambezi River and bungee jumping (also available on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls). During July and August, you can even take a refreshing dip in the natural infinity pool at the edge of the falls.

Several small and rustic camps in the Luangwa Valley cater just to walking safaris – a thrilling alternative to traditional game drives. These camps are mainly located in South Luangwa National Park .

Best time to visit for a safari in Zambia

Peak game viewing is from June to October, and Victoria Falls is at its best on the Zambia side from March to May.

Where to stay on safari in Zambia

Flatdogs Camp in South Luangwa National Park offers family-friendly luxury. In Livingstone, Jollyboys Backpackers provides a vibey base from which to explore town. The Victoria Falls Waterfront provides a free shuttle to the main event – but if you want to stay at the falls with unlimited access, the swish Royal Livingstone Resort is top-notch; the three-star Avani Victoria Falls Resort is next door.

Green Safaris operates a great circuit of camps in Zambia if you want to combine Victoria Falls with South Luangwa. Live the Robinson Crusoe life at Sindabezi Island Lodge on the Zambezi, and then head into the bush at Shawa Luangwa Camp . You can’t go wrong with walking-safari operators Time + Tide (its  Kakuli is a classic camp that’s been open since 1950), or Robin Pope .

Consider getting the KAZA UniVisa , a special $50 pass that allows for unlimited crossings between Zambia and Zimbabwe, plus a one-day trip to Botswana (via the Kazungula border crossing), within 30 days. Budget $250 to $700 per person, per night for lodging.

The adventurous choice for a first-time safari, Zimbabwe has arguably the best guides in Africa. The easiest way to experience it all? Spend three days in Victoria Falls. Since it’s one of the country’s most popular tourist towns, you’ll find plenty to see, do and eat.

The meandering rainforest walkway in Zimbabwe is where the majority of Victoria Falls viewpoints lie. This is a better option for experiencing the falls during during the dry season (May to October), when water levels on the Zambian side lessen. On some evenings and during the full moon,  Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe remains open at night for dazzling stargazing.

After a day of adrenaline-fueled bungee jumping, white-water rafting, zip-lining or hovering in a helicopter above Batoka Gorge, afternoon tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel , served every day between 3pm and 6pm, offers some refined relaxation, as you share a tiered stand of pretty sandwiches and delicate pastries beside the manicured lawns. If this lies beyond your budget, enjoy a simple gin-and-tonic sundowner – or head to the Wild Horizons Lookout Café .

The wildlife around here is less prolific than nearby Chobe National Park in Botswana (which you can visit on a day trip or easily combine with Victoria Falls). Yet a boat cruise allows for spottings of hippos, crocodiles and the occasional elephant. A 45-minute flight or two-hour drive away,  Hwange National Park is where you’ll find bigger game.

Best time to visit for a safari in Zimbabwe

There is fantastic wildlife viewing during the dry months, from May to October. Victoria Falls is at its peak from March to May.

Where to stay on safari in Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge sits on a ridge and overlooks a water hole frequented by buffaloes and other beasts. Nkosi Guest Lodge is a pretty, upmarket inn, while Ilala Lodge Hotel is just a 10-minute walk from Victoria Falls. The Victoria Falls Hotel, the iconic grande dame, offers perhaps the best views. Further afield, you can ensconce yourself in the bush at  Mpala Jena , about 40km (25 miles) upstream. In Hwange, The Hide , Camp Hwange  and Somalisa are all visitor favorites.

We offer private safaris for 2 – 4 persons for the price of a group arrangement.

If you choose to camp or use local lodgings prices are altered accordingly.

If your family or party contains 5 or 6 persons you can discuss price and arrangements with us.

However safari’s are never cheap, you travel a lot and distances are long, fuel is as expensive in Africa as it is in the Western world and park fees are high and must be paid in USD.

Visa are easy obtained at the boarder at the cost of 50 USD.

If you want to see the gorilla’s you need a gorilla permit. Nowadays a gorilla permit in Uganda is 500 USD.

Augmentations of park fees and the gorilla permit are not included in trip prices.

TaKe U offers safari trips requiring advanced payment of a trip price and a local payment at the first day of the trip to be paid in USD. From arrival at the airport to departure all transfers, lodgings and meals are catered for full board. Except beach extension, this is on condition of half board (unless otherwise noted). On the day of return only breakfast is included.

What is included in a budget South Africa safari?

“If you book an organized budget safari package, most costs will usually be included in the price quoted. That means all road transport between reserves, as well as game drives and guides and park fees. Meals should also be included in the price, along with tea, coffee and, possibly, drinking water. Other types of drinks, including alcohol, are excluded. Tips are also excluded, so check what is expected with your operator before you leave and carry enough cash to cover it.”

How do I avoid the crowds in the parks?

“It is easy to get away from the crowds in South Africa, especially if you self-drive. Even in Kruger, the popular southern half of the park has many little-used dirt roads suited to adventurous travelers. The unfashionable half of the park north of the Letaba River has a wilderness feel that will appeal greatly to travelers who want to get away from it all. Elsewhere, the country has a wealth of minor reserves. You will feel like you have these to yourself. It helps to travel during the southern hemisphere winter (May to September), especially if a safari is your first priority. This is the low season but also the best time of year for wildlife viewing in most Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) reserves.”

What are the pros and cons of a self-drive budget safari in South Africa?

“Aside from traveling around by bus, a self-drive trip is the most affordable way to see South Africa. It allows total flexibility in terms of day-to-day itinerary planning, especially if you carry a tent (you won’t need to book accommodation far in advance). My partner and I opt to self-drive in wildlife reserves where possible because it allows us to explore at our own pace, to have control over how far we drive each day, and to take our time at animal sightings. We feel closer to nature and to the wildlife without the presence of a guide. For some, the presence of air-con and heating in a closed car might also be an advantage over the more exposed nature of the open vehicles used on most guided safaris. There are some downsides to a self-drive safari. You will need to deal with any car repairs yourself. You are probably less likely to spot lions, leopards and other well-camouflaged animals than experienced guides with sharp bush eyes.”

Can you describe a typical day on a budget trip in South Africa?

“The typical routine is to rise with the sun and grab a quick cup of coffee or tea. Then you head out on an early morning game drive and return to camp for a late breakfast or lunch. Afternoon game drives start at around 3 PM and continue until sunset. This routine may change on days when you travel from one campsite to another. Either way, the day usually ends with a few beers around the campfire, a simple bush dinner, and an early night for the dawn start. Game drives usually focus on the first two and last two hours of daylight. These cooler times of the day provide the best chance of seeing lions, leopards and other predators on the move. These times also offer the best light for photography.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“Budget accommodation within national parks and reserves typically comprises one or more rest camps that offer a selection of clean, simple and affordable huts and chalets, as well as camping facilities for those with their own tent. These amenities are partially aimed at the budget-conscious local market and are priced accordingly. Camping is usually the cheapest and most flexible option. If you book a cheap South Africa safari with an operator, they will most likely supply tents and bedding. Self-drivers would need to bring their own. Almost without exception, campsites in South Africa’s parks and reserves are equipped with self-catering kitchens (bring your own cooking implements). There are also barbecues, and clean ablution blocks with hot water and flush toilets. Huts and chalets usually have en suite bathrooms and toilets. They will also have private barbecue facilities and in most cases a kitchenette and fridge. Many rest camps also have restaurants and/or small grocery shops, but this should be checked in advance. Other budget options include private guesthouses, B&Bs and backpacker hostels, but these are usually located outside national parks and reserves.”

How much will this safari cost?

“With a bit of care, a couple could probably get by on less than US$100 per person per day on a self-drive safari. A South Africa budget safari booked through an operator will be somewhat more expensive and prices typically start at around US$150 per person sharing per day. A relatively affordable option for travelers wanting to see a few parks and reserves is to join an overland truck tour that covers South Africa and neighboring countries such as Namibia and Botswana.”
