animal lineup safari preschool activities

Activities involving patterns, ordering, and counting are all important for early math skills. Using safari animals to practice these skills is a great way to do so through play! Here are some ideas:

  • Line up all the animals and then ask questions like “who is in the front?” “who is behind the elephant?”
  • Divide the animals evenly between you and your toddler. Put your animals in a pattern and then have your toddler copy the pattern.
  • Put all the animals in a pattern and then remove 2 or 3 from the line. Ask your toddler to put them in the correct place to complete the pattern.
  • Ask you toddler to group all the same animals together. Then ask them who has the most and least.
  • Count the animal groups.

safari cookies

Let’s make safari cookies! Sugar cookies are so fun to make with toddlers and they are so easy, too! Get some safari cookie cutters like these or these and make some adorable safari themed cookies. (We have the first set, which Little Miss loved, but they aren’t as durable as metal ones like the second set listed.)

Making sugar cookies allows our little ones to practice fine motor skills as they roll out the dough and cut the shapes. You can also use this time to talk more about animals and what color they are, what noises they make, etc.

map skills safari preschool activities

If you are looking for a nice, quick activity, this one has got you covered.

Show your toddler how they can line up the paper clips to figure out the distance between each animal. Talk about how many paper clips it takes to get from the giraffe to the hippo, hippo to elephant, and elephant to giraffe. Ask them questions such as, “Which one is the furthest? How do you know?” They may need some help to figure this out, but this is great for introducing them to early math skills! When you are done, let them make a paper clip train, just for fun!

diy binoculars

If you are going on a Safari, you want to see some animals! Make these cute and fun binoculars to see the animals with!

Using binoculars is a great way to practice coordination and motor skills. It also makes looking for things more fun! Use these for other activities throughout Safari month, such as looking for animals, letters, and more!

letter i letter recognition activity

“I” is for Ice Cream, of course! When you are on a Safari, it can get pretty hot, so you will need to stop for a cool snack. But you better eat fast or your ice cream will melt! Learn a new technique for painting and practice recognizing the letter “I” with this super sweet activity !

4. Go on a Picnic Breakfast Adventure

Pack up your favorite cereal, some spoons, a bottle of milk, and some fresh fruit to enjoy at your favorite park in the morning before the weather gets too hot. After, go on a hike to see how many different kinds of animals you may be able to spot.

5. Visit Your Local Zoo

Take a field trip to visit your local zoo, learn more about wildlife, and have up-close encounters with amazing animals. Try to come up with one new question about each animal, and research for answers when you get back home.

6. Safari Paint with Water

I love how easy these paint with water pages from Melissa & Doug are to set up, and the kids think they are almost magical! Use a paintbrush with water to lift the paint from the palette at the top of each page. Then paint using that color on the sheet. Super easy and lots of fun!

7. Pick a Wild Animal and Research About It

Choose one wild animal you would like to learn more about, then visit your local library to find books and more information about that animal. Design a poster with the information you gather.

8. Watch a Nature Program

Some of our current favorites are Planet Earth and Hidden Kingdoms — amazing photography and videography! Plus, you are sure to learn something new about wildlife.

9. Make Your Own Trail Mix

If your pantry is full of almost-empty boxes of cereals and snacks, it may be time to make your own trail mix. Set out bowls with a variety of cereals, crackers, pretzels, and other snacks (whatever you already have on-hand) — along with a few spoons and bags to hold the snack mix. Invite the kids to make up their own mixture of trail mix. Later, bring your homemade trail mix along on your next hiking adventure.

Safari Large Motor Games for Preschoolers

  • Make a game out of these movements that encourage gross motor development by pathways.org. Have kids stand in a line and when you call out an animal, they must start to move like that animal. You can also make cards with these animals on them. Each child gets a turn to come up, pick a card and act like that animal.
  • Go on a lion hunt! Pick one child to be the lion and have them hide. Everyone else needs to grab their binoculars and sneak around the room until you see the lion. Once you spot him, run back to the safe space without being tagged. The child who gets tagged is the next lion.
  • A great way to review while getting kids up and moving is to make large paw prints out of different colored construction paper. On each paw, write a number or letter (you will want several paw prints with the same number/letters if you are playing with a group of kids). Spread your paw prints throughout the room on the floor. Call out a color, number, or letter. Each child has to find a paw print with that attribute and stand on it (or put one foot on it if they are sharing the paw.)

  • Color or paint the letter posters in our Alphabet Safari.
  • Make a banner by decorating the letters in your name and stringing them together (templates included in the Alphabet Safari)
  • This safari board game takes preschoolers on a fun adventure that helps them practice taking turns, learning facts about different animals, and developing hand-eye coordination

Exciting Safari Crafts

Avatar photo

If you’re looking for exciting safari crafts to make, these will set you up perfectly. Whisk your kids away to magical Africa where they can don safari gear and explore the safari parks, ready to see the wildlife in its natural habitat. With their wearable gear ready, they could take to the backyard to spot wildlife or draw typical wildlife they would see on a safari, like elephants, giraffes, and hippos.

Safari Vest

safari crafts and activities

Supplies you’ll need

  • Grocery-sized paper bag
  • Pale pink paper or card

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Lay your paper bag down on a flat surface with the bottom end pointing up.
  • Draw your vest outline on the paper bag with a pencil. Start by drawing the armholes which will begin at the top corners of the bag, come in slightly, and then go back to the edge of the bag. It should cover about 5 inches from the top pencil mark to the bottom. You can make these larger or smaller depending on whether kids are wearing jumpers etc.
  • Now you will draw the neckline and front of the vest which will open up. Back at the top of the bag, measure 4 inches from the top left across and draw a slightly curved line down so it meets in the middle of the bag, and then continue the line straight down until it hits the bottom.
  • Create a mirror image from the right-hand side and when the line meets the top of the line in the middle you can stop. It will share the same line as the other side so there is just one.
  • Flip the bag over, keeping the closed end at the top. Now you want to draw your neckline at the back. Folding the top of the bag toward you slightly, draw a line where you see the neck markings on the front side of the vest. Connect your two lines at the back by drawing a large semi-circle.
  • Now you can cut out your vest using scissors. Cut the armholes first. Then cut up the line running up the front middle of the vest. Start cutting from the bottom and follow the line up then around one side where it curves to form the neck. Then cut the other side of the neck hole.
  • Flip the vest over and cut out the neck hole at the back.
  • Take your pink paper/card and draw 7 rectangles in the following sizes (width x height) and (quantity): 5 in x 4 in (1) / 4 in x 4 in (2) / 2 in x 3 in (4). These will be your safari vest pockets. Cut out these rectangles.
  • Draw stitching around the edge of the pockets and draw the flap by making little dots or dashes using the black pen. Draw 1 button on the smallest pockets (above the “flap”) and 2 on the larger ones.
  • Draw 2 thin rectangles on your pink card 5 in x ½ in. These will be zippers that you can place on the jacket. Cut out your rectangles and then using your black pen, make stitching all around the edges of the card. Then make lots of vertical lines moving across the rectangle, like a zipper pattern. Then draw the zipper pull at one end.
  • Now you can assemble your vest. Grab your glue and arrange the pockets on the front of the vest. Place the largest pocket at the bottom right. Glue two of the smallest next to each other on the opposite side. Fix the other two small pockets to the top of the vest, and add your remaining pockets and zippers where you like in between.

Your safari vest is now ready for action. If you have a small child (and a very big bag!), you can leave the middle line on the front of the vest just with a pen outline and don’t cut it (essentially making a sack or t-shirt). You would just cut the armholes and neck hole.

  • Paint (beige or green)
  • Newspaper or an old sheet
  • Black ribbon or thick string
  • Choose your workspace and lay down some old newspaper or an old sheet to cover the worktop or floor.
  • Grab your paper bowl and fold the edges so they face downward instead of up.
  • Paint the outside of the bowl in a khaki-themed color (green or beige tones). Let it dry.
  • When the paint has dried, punch one hole on opposite sides of the bowl.
  • Take your ribbon and measure it so it can wrap around the hatband/trim area of the hat 1.5 times and then calculate enough extra to go under your child’s chin. Cut the ribbon.
  • Thread one piece of the ribbon through the hole from the top downward. Pull enough down so it can easily fit under your child’s chin and tie to the other end when you pull that through.
  • Get your glue and squeeze some out around the hatband/trim area. Starting on the side of the hat where you thread the ribbon through, take the ribbon and wrap it around the full circumference.
  • You are going to continue to wrap the ribbon around halfway again. Before you do so, add more glue in the same direction you will be laying the ribbon. Take the ribbon and place it on the glue until you meet the other hole that you made. Gently press down on the ribbon that is glued to the top. Let the glue dry.
  • When the glue is dry and the ribbon is stuck to the hat, thread the ribbon through the hole on the other side. You will now have two pieces of ribbon hanging down under the inside rim of the hat. Your hat is ready to use.

Place it on your child’s head and tie the two ends of the ribbon together to fasten it so it doesn’t fall off. Alternatively, you can just tie it loosely or leave it hanging as decoration if they don’t want it tight.

Safari Binoculars

safari crafts and activities

  • 2 x empty bathroom tissue rolls
  • Paints in black, dark green, light green, and yellow
  • Paintbrushes
  • Scissors or hole punch
  • Thin black ribbon or thick round string
  • Paint your tissue rolls in camouflage print, leaving ½ inch blank at both ends which you will paint black. With dark green, light green, and yellow paints, make thick swirls around each other until the rolls are covered (except for the ends). Paint ½ inch of black around each end and leave them to dry.
  • Once dry, glue the rolls together down the middle.
  • While the glue dries, prepare your ribbon or string. Cut a 16-inch piece off.
  • Make a hole – for the ribbon – on each of the tissue rolls which will act as the neck strap. On the outside rim at the back (choose either end as long as you use the same for both holes) make a small hole with a hole punch or scissors.
  • Thread your ribbon through and tie it off on itself. Your binoculars are ready for use.

If you want to make this craft faster, you can paint the rolls all in black and skip the colors.

Safari Animal Activities For Preschoolers

Sharing is caring!

My preschool aged daughter is spending her school time at home these days (hello 2020 quarantine). We are trying to keep her enriched with fun and easy play-through-learning experiences.  Making sure she has some basic art, math, reading, writing and play time in her day is challenging for my brain but important and crucial for hers. I thought it would be easier to come up with ideas if I first came up with a  “theme” of things she wanted to learn about. That got my wheels spinning in order to find age appropriate learning activities for her. So I searched and came up with tons of safari animal activities for preschoolers.

The safari animal theme was tied into our week. We did all sorts of arts and crafts, and mixed in learning lessons.

Safari Animal Activities For Preschoolers

Safari Animal Words

We talked a lot about different animals, and how some of them live on a farm, some in the sea, some in the jungle and some of them in the safari.

Using a piece of butcher block paper I asked my daughter to come up with a few animals that she thought were safari animals. As she said an animal, I asked her to tell me what the first letter of the word started with. I also asked if she could hear any other sounds in the word. We compiled a long list and kept coming back to it throughout the week.

Safari Writing

My daughter’s teacher encouraged us to continue with an at home journal, so we did a simple safari journal prompt. If I could have any safari animal as a pet it would be….. and I asked her to draw a picture of her and the animal playing together.

We also used some of these playdough m ats and first traced the letters, then used playdough to create the letter.

Safari Small World Play

Using objects from around the house, I set up all the elements in order for my daughter to create her very own safari habitat. This was so much fun, and she kept coming back to it over and over again all week. A perfect activity for imaginative play. Full details and setup can be found here .

Safari Puppet Show

We talked about how each story has to have a beginning, middle and an end. I decided to let my daughter come up with her own puppet show and story but told her it needed to have all the elements of a story.

I found free safari animal clipart online and printed them out on a single piece of paper. I drew a circle around each animal and asked my daughter to cut them out.

animal activities for kids

We then placed the animal on top of a craft stick with a glue stick.

safari animal activities for preschoolers

I used an old table cloth and put it over the top of the table. My daughter sat underneath and had her puppet story come to life! It was about a elephant who needed to go to the doctor but slipped on his way in BTW.

Safari Arts and Crafts

Lion painting.

This project is so easy to set up. We used this easel  and I had my daughter on one side and my son on the other.

The first step was to draw the face. We did a guided and directed drawing, I told her in the middle of the paper to draw the triangle, and then the eyes etc and she followed along.

animal art activities

I LOVE painting with cotton balls it’s so easy and provides way less of a mess than traditional paint brushes. We used orange and yellow paint , and then I took two clothespins and attached cotton balls to them in order to create the circular dots around the lion’s face.  If you don’t have the supplies at home, dot paint  would also work well here.

lion preschool activity

Pro tip: whenever you do a painting project with littles add a washable plastic table cloth underneath. We also use these bibs to avoid getting paint on our clothes.

Safari Themed Preschool Craft

Moving along in the week, what’s a safari without a lion mask? This was a great opportunity for my daughter to work on her scissor cutting skills.

lion mask

  • On a piece of orange and yellow construction paper, draw 1 inch thick lines, and ask your child to cut them out (if not scissor ready have an adult cut them out).
  • Cut a hole in the middle of a paper plate
  • Using a glue stick, fasten the strips on the top of the paper plate, alternating yellow and orange stripes
  • Let the glue dry and then use the mask!

This was great for talking about patterns. She had to think each time she put a colored strip on what came next. We also went back to the mask later in the day and gave it a “hair cut.”

Math Safari Games

My daughter really enjoys playing dice games at school, so right before bed each night during safari week, we played a super fun and easy giraffe dice game.

Safari Snack

Who said you can’t play with your food? We took oranges and used edible pens and drew cute lion and tiger faces on our oranges.

safari snack

Safari Books

Since we can’t hit the bookstore or library these days, I had to get creative and find all the animal and safari books we already had. Luckily we had a few and they are a great addition to any littles library:

  • Put Me In the Zoo
  • Giraffes Can’t Dance
  • If Animals Kissed Goodnight

Safari P.E. Time

Now more than ever it is so important for my kids to stay active! They are used to a half an hour of straight running around the gym or playground at school, and being cooped up in the house means we have to get creative.

My daughter has been OBSESSED with Cosmic Kids Yoga. The narrator does an AMAZING job at telling a detailed story and then having very kid friendly yoga poses to go along with it. We did the jungle safari themed yoga and it was a huge hit.

Safari’ed Out

We had such a fun week learning about safari and jungle animals and can’t wait till our next theme, we are headed to Outer Space!

How to Make Your Own Safari Hat

Little adventurers will love learning how to make their very own safari hat with this simple kids craft!

Set your child’s creativity loose by letting them paint and decorate their hat (a paper bowl). And then sit back and watch as they enjoy lots of open-ended play.

We made this for our Uganda preschool unit as part of our section about safaris.

This hat is perfect to make in conjunction with our DIY binocular craft and use in our fun safari look-and-find game .

With all the right gear prepared, your child will feel like they are on a real safari!

Safari Hat Craft

Materials to make the safari hat kids craft

  • Glue (recommended: Elmer’s Multi-Purpose Glue )

Instructions

Take your bowl and bend the edges so they point downward instead of up.

Paint the bottom side of the bowl in the color of your choice. You could go with traditional beige/brown or something more colorful!

Paint the bowl in the color of your choice

Allow the bowl to dry and then punch a hole in each side near the top of the rim.

Punch holes into both sides of the bowl at the base if the rim

Cut a piece of string long enough that it can circle the rim of the bowl a time and a half and still have enough slack to tie under your child’s chin.

Place a line of glue along the base of the bowl for the string

  • Place a line of glue along the base of the bowl. Wrap the string around the bowl in the line of glue, overlapping on the front half. Stick the extra string down through the hole in each side.

Glue the string to the base of the bowl

Let the glue dry. When your child uses the hat, tie it securely under your child’s chin to keep it from slipping.

Completed safari hat craft

My son had so much fun making and wearing his hat! I loved seeing how much he enjoyed painting his bowl and then his delight to see it turn into a hat with the simple addition of string.

VARIOUS WORKSHOPS-Safari

Have fun with these wonderful workshop ideas created by Caroline Allard.

Construction/building blocks:

  • Decorate your area with pictures of animals that can be seen during a safari.
  • Offer different kinds of animals: wild animals, aquatic animals, polar animals, farm animals, reptiles, etc.
  • Figurines that can represent people that are visiting a zoo.
  • Blocks (Lego, etc.) that children can use to build shelters for animals.
  • A play mat that represents animals or a zoo.

Educa-decorate-Safari

  • Several Popsicle sticks and white glue. Children can use them to build cages for the animals.
  • Orange, yellow, brown, and black construction paper that can be used to create animal collages or 3D animals with empty toilet paper rolls.
  • Paint an empty toilet paper roll to represent a lion. Let dry. Use a hole-punch to make four holes in the toilet paper roll (two in the front and two in the back). Insert a pipe cleaner in each pair of holes to represent the lion's legs. Bend the ends of the pipe cleaners to represent paws. Cut a small paper coffee cup horizontally halfway up. Next, cut it vertically to represent a lion's mane. Fold and paint the paper cup. Draw the lion's face on the bottom of the cup. Let dry. Glue the toilet paper roll in the bottom of the cup to complete your lion.
  • Old National Geographic magazines that children can use to cut pictures of animals and make a giant collage.
  • Strips of orange, black, and white paper that can be used to create animals.
  • Feathers that can be used as paintbrushes to paint pretty birds.
  • Coloring pages that represent various animals that can be seen during a safari.
  • Stencils representing different wild animals.
  • Yellow and orange paper that children can draw on using black markers.

Group identification-Pandas

  • A piece of paper divided into two sections with, for example, a zebra drawn in the top section. Children must reproduce the drawing in the bottom section.
  • Set up a ticket booth where children can pretend to buy a ticket for the zoo. To represent a zoo, display pictures of animals on the walls of your daycare or set stuffed zoo animals here and there.
  • The zookeeper will be very popular throughout this theme: shirt, pants, hat, flashlight, set of keys, cell phone, etc.
  • There is always a veterinarian at the zoo: white shirt, stethoscope, flashlight, magnifying glass, syringes, bandages, etc.
  • A cook is responsible for feeding the animals. Transform your kitchen area so children can prepare food for the monkeys, lions, snakes, etc.
  • Who cleans the animals' cages? An animal technician! Provide work clothes, a broom, a bucket, brushes of all kinds, etc.

The kangaroo family This activity can be presented outside. Set several hula hoops on the ground and encourage children to hop in them with their feet stuck together to represent a kangaroo.

Musical animals (Open picture game-Zoo animals) Play African music and invite children to dance around the daycare. When you stop the music, have a child pick a card. As a group, they must move about like the animal shown on the card and make the corresponding animal sound for a few minutes. When you start the music again, children resume dancing and so on.

Follow the zookeeper You are the zookeeper. Ask children to form a line and stand one behind the other. At first, perform simple moves (three steps forward, two steps sideways, a small kangaroo hop, etc.). Children must repeat your every move. As the game progresses, introduce actions that are more and more difficult. You can, for example, have children move backwards, on their tiptoes like a giraffe, heavily like an elephant, etc.

Giant word flashcards-The zoo

The monkeys follow the gorilla Have children (monkeys) stand in a line behind the leader (the gorilla). The gorilla performs a variety of actions and the monkeys must repeat his every move. The gorilla can jump, raise his arms, crawl, clap, spin around, etc.

Silly monkey Select a child who will play the role of the monkey. The other children are gorillas. The gorillas must lie down on the floor, on their side, with their eyes open and a serious look on their face. The monkey must walk among the gorillas, making silly faces. If a child laughs, he/she is eliminated. The last remaining gorilla becomes the silly monkey for the next round.

Color by number-Monkeys

Monkey see, Monkey do Encourage children to pretend they are monkeys. They must imitate everything you do (make a silly face, scratch your head, laugh, fall down, etc.). Variation: This game can be presented at lunch time. Use it to encourage children to eat broccoli or another vegetable they don't really enjoy. It just might work!

Monkey face Set several mirrors on a table. Invite children to make silly faces. Organize a contest!

Safari-Themed Playdate and FREE Printable

Safari Party Playdate Theme plus Games, Tutorial, and FREE Printable

With the weather so nice in the afternoons, I want to get my kids outside more often. They wanted to see their friends, so we invited them all over for a semi-structured safari-themed party playdate with Oriental Trading Company . I set up a few decorations, some snacks, a game, and a craft for the kids to enjoy.

Some of the activities needed some guidance with the age range of the kids who participated, but they were not overly-structured so the adults could still relax. I combined indoor and outdoor activities as well to give a change of atmosphere.

Binocular Craft

Safari Binoculars Craft Tutorial

What You Need

  • Colored craft rolls (2 per project)
  • Crayons/markers/stickers
  • Metallic washi tape
  • Hole puncher

You can go two ways with this: assemble these beforehand (recommended) or assemble these during the party (what we did to give the kids more creative freedom.) If you have help, you can assemble them during the party. Below is the example project I made to share with the kids as a visual for their binoculars.

1. Hold two craft rolls together and carefully tape them together with washi tape around each end. Wrap tightly so they do not fall apart; I wrapped two layers of tape around each end.

*If you want these to be more like regular binoculars and you have the time/supplies (I did not get around to this), you can hot glue two medium-sized wooden beads between the rolls just prior to taping. If you do this, it may be easier to pre-assemble the binoculars depending on your playdate size.

Safari Binoculars Craft Step 2

5. Lace the yarn through the hole and tie the strings tightly onto the tubes so they do not come undone.

Safari Binoculars Craft Step 6

Snack Ideas

I always serve more nutritious, small, and usually inexpensive snacks. This time I served pretzel sticks, grapes that I got a great deal on, juice boxes, and had bananas as a decoration but available if requested.

Decorations

These were very simple as that was not the focus of the playdate, unlike a lot of the parties we throw. I simply set up a little area with the snacks and craft supplies, hung a toy parrot off of the light fixture, and put a toy snake and frog around the snack area. The supplies for the game were sitting on one of the seats.

Safari Seek Game

Safari Party Playdate Safari Seek

Each child was given a chance to be the seeker and wear the pith hat and vest. The other kids wore the animal hats (giraffe, monkey, elephant, tiger, and lion.) They then had to hide for the safari guide to find. Of course, the kids at our party were a little too young to understand what it meant to hide, but it still worked with them running around.

On Safari Handprint Animals Craft for Preschool and Kindergarten

Your students will "roar" with delight when they see these handprint safari collages displayed around the room or on your bulletin board.

What you need: On Safari Handprint Picture Mat White construction paper Gray, white, black, brown, and yellow paint Paper plates Markers Glue Scissors

What you do: Print the On Safari Handprint Picture Mat  and make one copy per child. Black and white version available in our KidsSoup member site.

Over a period of three days, have children make three safari handprint animals on white construction paper. For each animal, have child paint hand in the suggested color and make a print on the paper.

Show children how to turn the prints upside down and add markings to make each handprint into a safari animal. Discuss the kinds of patterns (spots, stripes, patterns) and features (eyes, manes, ears, hoofs) that need to be added to each handprint to make the specific animals.

Giraffe Handprint Craft : Yellow handprint with the thumb as the head. Have children add brown patches, two small brown horns, an eye, a yellow tail with a bushy brown end, and brown hooves.

Once handprints are dry, have children cut out each animal and glue it to his or her On Safari Picture Mat . Display completed handprint artworks on a bulletin board or classroom wall.

Freebies for Science and STEM Teachers: Grades K–12

Project Learning Tree Activities Looking for ways to engage K–12 learners in exploring nature and studying the environment? This collection of sample learning activities from Project Learning Tree (PLT) is a great place to start. The activities address various grade levels and topics and are drawn from educational materials published by PLT, including activity guides, e-learning units, and other resources.

For example, Backyard Safari (grades K–2) takes young learners outside to look for signs of animal life in the schoolyard, while Web of Life (grades 3–5), explores the topic of food chains in the classroom. The activity Field, Forest, and Stream (grades 6–8) engages middle level learners in investigating how living and nonliving components (e.g., sunlight, soil moisture, temperature, wind, and water flow) affect ecosystems, while Monitoring Forest Health (grades 9–12) teaches high school students how to conduct a health checkup of a local wooded area, take forestry measurements, and evaluate the ecological services provided by trees and forests. ( Note: E-mail registration is required to download the sample activities. )

Freebies for Science and STEM Teachers: Elementary and Middle Level

Make and Color a Paper Airplane This simple activity for grades K–8 from NASA’s Space Crafts Activities Series lets students color, fold, and fly a paper airplane model designed by NASA. The activity includes two printable templates (one color and one black and white), an accompanying instructional video, and links to additional coloring pages and resources. The instructional video not only shows students how to fold the paper to create the plane, but it also features fun facts about NASA.

Freebies for Science and STEM Teachers: Middle Level Through College

“Gikinoo’wizhiwe Onji Waaban” (Guiding for Tomorrow) Curriculum Gikinoo’wizhiwe Onji Waaban (Guiding for Tomorrow)—GWOW, Changing Climate, Changing Culture—is an online service-learning curriculum that weaves together Indigenous Ecological Knowledge of the Ojibwe with data-driven science to help students understand climate change impacts. Developed collaboratively in 2015 by Wisconsin Coastal Management Program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with continuing support from various partners (e.g., Great Lakes Restoration, NASA, National Park Foundation and other groups), the customizable curriculum for middle level to adult audiences has five components: Ojibwe Lifeways, Investigate the Science, What Can We Do?, Talking Circle, and Additional Resources. The components provide a structured learning sequence for students and teachers to investigate and reflect on the impacts of climate change in their environment. Each component builds upon knowledge gained in prior components.

For example, after working through one or more of the seasonal units presented in Ojibwe lifeways (e.g., maple sugaring and birch bark harvesting, spring; fishing, summer; wild rice harvesting, fall; and respecting our culture, winter), learners move to activities in Investigate the Science, in which they integrate the place-based knowledge they’ve gained with scientific climate change research. After exploring data relationships in Investigate the Science, learners reflect on what they’ve learned and apply that knowledge to action at a community level in the What Can We Do? and Talking Circle components. The Additional Resources component provides supporting climate change resources, project tips, and tools to guide teachers and students through the investigations.

DenverEllis commented Oct 3, 2023

Were you able to successfully exploit this? The blog Calif wrote mentions not being able to upload a remote file. Doing some testing of my own, I am not sure this overcomes that limitation.

Sorry, something went wrong.

@to016

to016 commented Oct 4, 2023 • edited

Yes, of course, I can. So, I released my proof of concept. Remote file can be uploaded because i made the php process handling file upload request crash so that it will be saved into the temporary folder.

@kafescareless

kafescareless commented Oct 4, 2023

something worng maybe? itry your code in my leb, Remote file can not be uploaded, icheck the files , it didn't existed.

did you check the temporary folder's value via phpinfo() ? if my memory serves me right, i had some problem with the "private" /tmp folder in ubuntu 22.04 environment, after changing the value of it to false make the temp file create successfully or another way is to set the value of temp folder to a different location.

can anyone explain what is the role of "files":"msl:/etc/passwd" in writePayloadToTempFile?

if I remove "/etc/passwd" leaving just "files":"msl:", the script would work as expected, so what is the point in /etc/passwd?

to016 commented Nov 30, 2023

can anyone explain what is the role of "files":"msl:/etc/passwd" in writePayloadToTempFile? if I remove "/etc/passwd" leaving just "files":"msl:", the script would work as expected, so what is the point in /etc/passwd?

The role of it is to make the php processing the http file upload request to crash, so the upload file will be saved into temp folder

Ok, thanks. Then my question is why does it work with /etc/passwd omitted in the request?

The way I see it is that PHP simply has no legit path to save file, so the file gets saved to tmp.

N00BIER commented Dec 4, 2023

anyone tried to repro with craft running on windows? for some reason php* files do not get stored in tmp... Any changes to be made to the script so it would work? thank you

@m3m0o

m3m0o commented Dec 12, 2023

Thanks man! I had to make a small change to the file being sent in the writePayloadToTempFile function. The tag does not have a / closing it. After adding, the POC worked perfectly.

I don't know if this problem only occurs in my environment. I'll leave it for you to check.

to016 commented Dec 12, 2023 • edited

To be honest, I was a bit rusty when I released the POC and didn't check it carefully. There were some errors in the code (which make the poc not work on orther environment), but it should be alright now (hopefully 🥹). Truly sorry, and thanks for your help to make it complete, guys.

Thank you man. It didn't quite work for me right away, so I made some adjustments to the script.

If the POC didn't work for you either, give these modifications a try.
