Glamping New Jersey: The 7 Best Tents, Yurts, & Tiny Cabins

From rustic lakefront cabins to cozy yurts by the beach, there’s more to the Garden State's glamping scene than you'd expect

Glamping New Jersey: The 7 Best Tents, Yurts, & Tiny Cabins

New Jersey’s reputation may very well precede it thanks to things like mob mythology and mega malls that create some seriously mega traffic jams (it’s all true). And there's the famous yet sometimes infamous Jersey Shore and Atlantic City with its casinos and boardwalk. (New York City is around here too.) Say what you will about the Garden State, but I’m here to remind you that it was given that superlative for a very good reason, and as with any destination, there’s more to a place than meets the eye. Including, we might add, a small handful of worthy glamping experiences aka luxury camping.

As a born and bred New Jerseyan—some might call me a Jersey Girl, and no I did not pump my own gas for far too many years—I know for sure that this small state is good at packing a lot into a relatively tiny area, be it people, highways, but also outdoor recreation. From top to bottom, New Jersey has pockets and even large swaths of natural beauty that run the gamut from the forests and wetlands of the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve to the estuaries and beaches that run all the way down to Wildwood and Cape May. There are lakes and rivers for kayaking , country roads for biking, loads of hiking trails, surfing beaches, and humble mountains capable of delivering panoramic views.

New Jersey’s selection of glampsites might not be as big and impressive as other states like California or Texas , but there are still ways to enjoy a night under the stars while sleeping on a good, king bed—even if they are in an established campground. Whether you’re looking for pine forests or beachfront abodes, these are the best places to go glamping in New Jersey.

Here, you can book a stay at a one room seaside yurt that sleeps up to four, or go for a tiny cabin in the woods if that’s more your style. Bunk beds and fire pits give campers the full experience, but microwaves, mini fridges, and property-wide wifi access add some glamping approachability.

Six Flags glamping safari experience

The new “luxury glamping” experience inside the 350-acre safari park at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson will open to guests June 14, officials announced Tuesday.

Rates at the Savannah Sunset Resort and Spa start at $700 per night for a couple’s suite, and rise to at least $1,200 per night for a family glamping suite for four guests, according to the website.

There is a two-night minimum for each stay, officials said. The theme park, based in Ocean County, is now accepting reservations.

“We are excited to welcome guests this spring to the Savannah Sunset Resort and Spa, where opulence meets the open savannah in the heart of New Jersey,” said Six Flags Great Adventure Park President Brian Bacica.

“Our team is planning every detail to create a luxury experience welcoming guests to enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of our resort,” he said. “Whether you seek relaxation, a family adventure, or a romantic getaway, Savannah Sunset Resort and Spa promises to exceed your expectations.”

The resort offers 20 glamping suites that vary in size, sleeping two to six guests, officials said. Each unit has a walk-in shower and HVAC unit.

A safari stay includes a giraffe feeding, daily breakfast and multi-park passes to all three Six Flags Great Adventure Resort parks. Other behind-the-scenes encounters and VIP experiences are available for an additional cost.

There are more than 1,200 animals in the park’s safari area. The animals will not be able to access the suites directly, according to the website.

“Each luxury suite offers a private bathroom and access to outdoor entertainment, fire pits, restaurant & bar, spa services, event meeting space and more,” the website says.

To arrive at the resort, guests will park at a private, covered parking area, which is adjacent to the main Great Adventure parking lot, and leave their luggage in their car. A park attendant will escort the guests and their luggage to the safari resort in a private vehicle after they check in, the website says.

All guests must be at least 5 years old to stay at the resort.

The resort is also available to host small events, including weddings and corporate retreats, officials said. More information is available at the resort’s website at www.sixflags.com/savannahsunset .

The new resort is one of the largest investments in the theme park in nearly two decades, officials said. Six Flags is also debuting its 15th roller coaster this summer, called THE FLASH: Vertical Velocity , the first coaster of its kind in North America.

Six Flags will open for the 2024 season on March 16, officials said.

Safari glamping coming to six flags great adventure, the theme park is creating a spa and camping experience in its wild safari as part of the park's 50th anniversary celebration..

A concept illustration shows the Savannah Sunset Resort and Spa, the luxury spa and camping experience Six Flags Great Adventure plans to open in 2024 for its 50th anniversary.

JACKSON, NJ — Camping overnight at the zoo has been a popular activity in recent years at zoos all over the country.

Six Flags Great Adventure plans to take that to another level when it opens a luxury safari "glamping" experience in 2024, as part of the park's 50th anniversary celebration.

The Savannah Sunset Resort and Spa, described as "an authentic African lodging experience" within the 350-acre safari park, is one of two changes being made to the Wild Safari, park officials announced.

Find out what's happening in Brick with free, real-time updates from Patch.

"Overnight guests will enjoy ultra-luxurious 'glamping' accommodations, scenic vistas, spa services and VIP dining, all creating an unforgettable safari getaway," park officials said.

"Glamping" is defined as "outdoor camping with amenities and comforts (such as beds, electricity, and access to indoor plumbing) not usually used when camping," according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

The safari park opened at Great Adventure in 1974, when the amusement park opened, according to Great Adventure History, a fan website about the theme park .

It opened as a drive-through attraction with a three-lane road that allowed guests to travel through the park and see the animals, instead of seeing them in small cages, which was falling out of favor in the 1970s.

"One common problem encountered in the Safari, especially on hot summer days, was car radiators overheating in the stop-and-go traffic as people crawled through to watch the animals," the fan site noted. "The Safari wardens spent almost as much time helping stranded motorists as they did tending their animals."

The drive-through experience, which had been discontinued several years ago and replaced with a guided tour, was revived during the COVID-19 pandemic to limit guest interaction and allow visitors into the safari.

Park officials said the drive-through adventure will be closing again this fall, and in the spring the Off-Road Adventure will return.

The Off-Road Adventure will be a guided tour of the safari in off-road vehicles, accessible at two sites, including Frontier Adventures within the theme park or at the main Wild Safari entrance.

These New Jersey Glamping Experiences are a Must-Plan for 2022

Many of us like the concept of camping — but not the realities of it. Sure, sleeping under the stars and being immersed in nature sounds great, but sleeping in a tent does not (for some). The solution to this is glamping, a type of hybrid camping and hotel lodging experience. Participants can soak in nature and get the whole experience while still sleeping in a comfy, cozy bed at the end of the day. Glamping can be in a yurt, airstream, teepee, cabin, or treehouse. Any type of structure can be considered a glamping location if it is smack in the middle of na ture. Having access to air conditioning and full bathrooms are definitely a plus. Read on for some great locations for glamping in New Jersey that would make a great getaway to soak up nature.

Glamping Tent at Camp Griffin | Lebanon Township, NJ

A yurt is a circular tent that often has a domed ceiling. At Camp Griffin in Lebanon Township, there is a yurt surrounded by wildflowers on an elevated platform to keep it dry. Included in the four-season yurt is a full-sized bed with rugs and seating areas. There is access to a bathroom and a heater is available for use. Nearby there are quaint riverfront towns, flea markets, antiquing, river rafting, kayaking, and much more. The yurt is $190 per night, is pet-friendly,  and can hold up to four guests.

Glamping Tree House | Ocean View, NJ

This pet-friendly treehouse is located on a campsite near Sea Isle Beach with three bunk beds and one sofa bed, along with a half bathroom. The house is equipped with a kitchen with stovetop burners and a seating area. The beach is located just meters away and fishing and crabbing can be done off the bridge that is nearby. The treehouse is $476 a night and can sleep up to 6 guests. There are bathroom and laundry facilities on site.

Holly Shores Camping Resort | Cape May, NJ

Safari Tents are available to rent at Holly Shores Camping resort and are 16×20 luxurious tents. Each is equipped with a king bed, two twin beds, a small refrigerator, and other necessities. A half bath is located in each tent and showers are available in the bathhouse. Each tent sleeps four.  Contacting the campsite for updated rates is best. Holly Shores is located conveniently near both Cape May and Wildwood, making it a central location from which to explore the area.

Tentrr Signature Site-Heavens Landing | Vernon Township, NJ

This campsite is closer to camping than a hotel but also just steps away from the Appalachian Trail and near Pinwheel Vista, one of the best viewpoints in New Jersey. While the campsite is fully set up and stocked with equipment, it is totally off the grid, and that includes plumbing. The shower is a ‘Sun Shower’ and the toilet is a camp toilet. The tent itself can hold six guests, but another five-person pop-up tent is included in the tent’s inventory so the whole crew can join. The town of Vernon is about 4 minutes away and the town of Warwick is only 10 away. The glamping will be in a 10×12 safari-style canvas tent on a wooden platform.

The Jersey Shore is plenty of fun with its sandy beaches, ice cream shops and rolling waves.

But we can always do with a little more excitement ... and water slides!

Local amusement and water parks offer something for everyone, from easy-going rides like bumper cars and lazy rivers to "big kid" rides like the world's tallest roller coaster and racing water slides.

Casino Pier and Breakwater Beach, Seaside Heights

If you grew up in New Jersey, chances are you have been to Casino Pier — it's one of the most popular boardwalks and amusement parks at the Shore.

Its iconic Jet Star rollercoaster was swept into the Atlantic Ocean during superstorm Sandy, but plenty of rides remain, like the Centrifuge, an indoor scrambler with party music, strobe lights and smoke.

There are full-size roller coasters like Hydrus, with a 72-foot drop that reaches speeds of 45 miles per hour, as well as rides for kids, including bumper cars and a carousel.

Casino Pier also is home to arcade games and Breakwater Beach waterpark, with a wave pool, lazy river, slides (some more terrifying, like the 50-foot Salem's Scream), a hot tub, children's areas and more.

Fantasy Island Amusement Park and Thundering Surf Waterpark, Beach Haven

Whether you're enjoying the view from the top of the Ferris wheel or shooting Skee-Ball in the arcade, this Long Beach Island spot is filled with childhood nostalgia.

Located in Beach Haven's Bay Village, which has shops, restaurants and bars, Fantasy Island has an arcade and rides for those big and small.

Across the street, Thundering Surf Waterpark has six large slides, a lazy river, racing slides, a toddler splash area, a Flow Rider surfing simulator, and a kids splash area with a tipping bucket that dumps water on innocent bystanders (also fun for adults!).

Next to the waterpark is Settler's Mill Adventure Golf, a mini-golf course.

Jenkinson's Amusement Park, Point Pleasant Beach

Being on the Jenkinson's Boardwalk is fun for parents, with iconic watering holes like Martell's Tiki Bar. But it's also a wonderland for children, thanks to beautiful beaches, an aquarium, Jenkinson's Sweet Shop and an amusement park.

Jenkinson's offers an array of rides including airplanes, bumper cars, boats, a carousel and the spinning Dizzy Dragons. Most of the attractions are aimed toward younger kids, but some of rides — the Ferris wheel, Pendolo (a spinning swinging ride), Pirate's Plunge and Starship 3000 — are fun for teens and adults, too.

Keansburg Amusement Park and Runaway Rapids Waterpark, Keansburg

Just steps away from the beach, boasting beautiful bay views, is Keansburg Amusement Park. The surrounding town, which has earned a name for itself with new restaurants, a boardwalk, ample fishing piers, bars and more, makes this destination fun for the whole family.

The park, which was established in 1904, has carnival-style rides like the Frog Hopper, Pharaoh's Fury (a swinging boat ride much like Fantasy Island's Sea Dragon), Moby Dick and the spinning Gravitron (don't go on a full stomach!). There are plenty of exciting rides for little kids, too, including tea cups, the Sea Serpent roller coaster, a carousel and the Log Flume.

The park's go karts are a must, and don't miss nearby Runaway Rapids with water slides, a lazy river and splash zones.

Go:  275 Beachway Ave.; 732-495-1400,  keansburgamusementpark.com .

Six Flags Great Adventure, Hurricane Harbor and Wild Safari, Jackson

This park attracts visitors from all over the world, considering it's home to Kingda Ka, the globe's tallest roller coaster and the fastest in North America.

Along with other coasters like Medusa and Batman, the park houses Hurricane Harbor waterpark, with water slides like the Big Wave Racer, as well as calmer attractions like Blue Lagoon and the kid-friendly Calypso Springs.

Also on the property is the drive-through Wild Safari Adventure, with animals from nearly every continent including bison, rhea and llama from America; elephants, white rhinos and Grant's zebras from Africa; and Asian wildcats like Bengal and Siberian tigers.

Savannah Sunset Resort & Spa offers exclusive overnight stays, giraffe-feeding experiences

T aka stuck out her gray tongue to grab the slice of sweet potato from the feeder’s hand. She is a mama giraffe at Six Flags Great Adventure Wild Safari, one of nearly two dozen giraffes at the park. Feeding her, her two calves and her tower (giraffe herd) is an exclusive experience that comes with a stay at the Savanah Sunset Resort and Spa, a new adventure in the park. Guests can stay in a “glamping” suite located at the highest point in the safari land where lions, tigers and bears roam the 350 acres of conservation land.

“You’ll wake up to lions roaring,” said Staci Wheeler, Marketing and PR Manager at the theme park, who began her career in Wild Safari 20 years ago. “We care for 1,200 animals and 70 different species from six continents from around the world.”

Like the giraffe, several species in Wild Safari face extinction. Six Flags Great Adventure and Safari is working to conserve wildlife through its Save an Icon program. A portion of the proceeds from Wild Park visitors goes to its Wildlife Conservation Network and 100% of sales of the collectors pin is donated. This year, the pin features the saiga antelope, a mammal species whose population plummeted by 95% in 15 years.

“I think the coolest thing is spending the night,” said Dr. William “Doc” Rives, the director of Safari and lead veterinarian at the park. He’s worked at the park for 31 years and has nurtured nearly all of the animals from birth at the park. “It’s nice when you can hear the lions at about 4 or 5 in the morning. They all roar at the same time.”

Dr. Rives is the project manager of the Savannah Sunset where 20 luxury-style suites are in construction to give visitors an African safari experience at Six Flags Great Adventure. Booking is open for guests to plan a stay at the new resort and spa that offers dining, spa services and animal interactions at Wild Safari. Packages include tickets to Six Flags Great Adventure and Hurricane Harbor. The theme park is also opening a new rollercoaster, THE FLASH: Vertical Velocity, a boomerang rollercoaster in July.

While Savannah Sunset is new to Wild Safari Adventure, this year, the park is celebrating its 50th anniversary.  Guest who visit the park drive through the 350-acre preserve in a Safari Off Road vehicle, which were previously owned by the Army National Guard, with an expert safari tour guide who provides a fun, educational and interactive experience.

“I remember monkeys banging on our car,” said PHL17 photographer John Leonard, a Philadelphia native who grew up going to Six Flags Great Adventure across state line in New Jersey.

Six Flags Great Adventure Safari Park is one of the largest safaris in the United States.
