How to Track a Cruise Ship

by Emily Dopp

Published on 21 May 2023

While a cruise might be the ultimate in relaxation for those aboard the ship, it can be less relaxing for those left behind. If you like to keep track of loved ones, having them on a cruise can be a test. If this is your first time having a loved one on a cruise, you may be nervous. Since cell phone towers don’t dot the seas, you can’t even use cell phones for contact. Although it won't help you get in touch with family members or friends on the sea, you can at least keep track of where they are by tracking the cruise ship online. While your loved ones are navigating deck plans, itineraries, and cruise ports, you can rest assured they’re safe by using cruise ship tracking.

Go online to the Sailwx tracking page (see Resources). Sailwx provides tracking in real-time for all types of ships, including cruise ships.

Click on the “Ship Tracker” menu and choose “Cruise Ship Tracker” to display only cruise ships on the tracking map. A dot marked with the cruise ship’s name appears for each cruise ship. Click on any cruise ship dot, or use the “Zoom In” button, to get closer and see the cruise ship position more accurately.

Scroll below the map to see a chart of the cruise ships currently displayed on the map. If you zoomed in closer on the map, the chart displays only the ships in the zoom area.

Click any ship name in the chart to see a detailed report of the ship’s current and past positions. The chart lists the position of the ship by latitude and longitude.

Go online to the CruiseCal tracking page (see Resources). As the name indicates, CruiseCal focuses on the locations of cruise ships.

Scroll through the list of cruise ship names to find the name of the cruise ship you want to track. Once you find the ship name, you can see the ship line, port of origin and whether the ship has an on-board webcam.

Click on the “Ship” link in the “Webcam” column to view the ship’s webcam. The link takes you to the cruise ship’s webcam page, which usually displays the latitude and longitude of the ship in the ocean as well.

Click the name of the cruise ship if the ship has no webcam listed. In order to view the ship location if no webcam is provided, you must subscribe to the CruiseCal service, which costs $3 per month.

Cruise Line Tracking System

Open the homepage of the cruise line’s website if the cruise line offers tracking. Only some cruise lines, like Princess Cruises, provide on-site tracking services. Select Royal Caribbean Cruises, Holland America Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line ships offer tracking. Carnival Cruise Line and Ponant Cruises do not offer tracking services for their cruise ship’s current locations.

Click the “Ships” link to display the list of cruise ships. Select the ship that you want to track by clicking on its name.

Scroll down the page and find the webcam option on the page. Click the webcam option to view the ship’s cam, which is usually pointed at the ocean off the bow of the ship. The current position of the ship displays along with the video image and updates regularly throughout the day.

AIS ship tracking is a great way to stay up-to-date on the location of marine vessels. Using the AIS system, you can track the progress of a ship as it travels from port to port. This information can be beneficial for planning your  travel  itinerary and following your ship during your cruise vacation. Every cruise line follows its vessels to keep tabs on their time of arrival and current position as well as other items that might cause delays, such as weather or other marine traffic.

Want to stay up-to-date on cruise ship locations?

The AIS system is a network of transponders that sends information like ship name, location, course, and speed. This data can be used to track the progress of a cruise ship as it travels from port to port.

What Cruise Lines and Cruise Ships are tracked?

All of the world’s cruise lines use the AIS system to track each cruise ship in their fleet using updated data. It helps large vessels like cruise ships, and others know each other’s current location, speed, heading, routes, etc. You can look up a specific cruise ship or focus on a particular fleet from your favorite cruise line. Of course, this system also can show many other vessels such as cargo ships, pilots, yachts, passenger ferries, and many more.

Automatic Identification System (AIS)

The Automatic Identification System, or AIS, is a system used by ships and other vessels to identify each other and transmit their locations. This information can be used to track the progress of a cruise ship as it travels from port to port. The data transmitted by AIS includes the vessel’s name, course, speed, destination, ship type, and any safety-related messages. It also provides an indication of the vessel’s size, type, cargo, and maneuverability. The system also uses a network of base stations located on shore.

Vessel Traffic Services (VTS)

The vessel traffic services (VTS) system is used mainly for monitoring and controlling maritime traffic in an area of specific importance. With its modern  technology , it enables the authorities to observe, analyze, and coordinate the movement of vessels within a designated area. The system consists of various communication channels such as radar, AIS, VHF radio, and satellite.

What is Cruise Ship Tracking?

Cruise ship tracking is a technology that allows cruise lines to monitor their vessels in real time. AIS (Automatic Identification System) has become the standard for ship tracking, as it broadcasts the position of a vessel every few minutes. This data can be received by any receiver with an AIS system and can be used to track the progress of not only cruise ships but, other passenger vessels, cruise ferries, and even container ships. Modern vessel tracking allows authorities to see the positions of vessels in real-time. This might help you get a package on  time or in the case of cruises , plan for any delays arriving in a port.  Shore excursions  can be re-scheduled if needed well before the day arrived if a delay due to weather or another incident occurred.

What benefits of Cruise Ship Tracker?

By using the AIS ship tracking system, you can gain valuable insights about cruise ships and other vessels. The real-time data received from the AIS system allows you to stay up to date on the current location of a cruise ship, its speed, and its heading. This is great for  planning your own cruise itinerary  or just staying informed on the progress

Can you track every cruise ship?

No, not every cruise ship can be tracked. Some cruise ships may not have an AIS system installed, and therefore cannot be tracked. Additionally, some countries may restrict the broadcast of AIS data for security or other reasons. For these reasons, it is essential to double-check the availability of AIS data before attempting to track a specific cruise ship.

United States Coast Guard Regulations

The United States Coast Guard requires all ships operating in US waters to have an AIS system installed. This means that all cruise ships visiting the United States must have an AIS system installed and active at all times. This requirement ensures that all vessels are visible and traceable while in US waters, allowing for improved safety and security.

Emergency Situations

In the event of an emergency, AIS ship tracking can be used to quickly locate and contact a vessel in distress. By using the system, search and rescue teams can quickly and accurately locate vessels in need of assistance. This can mean the difference between life and death in some cases.

Is there a place on the Carnivel site where you can track ships? Family member at home is interested in when we're in port or moving, etc...

What can I say, my Dad's a Navy man.

Not that I've ever seen. Some of the ships have webcams that are online. What ship are you on?

This link might be of interest to your Dad if this is one of the ships your on: http://www.infocruise.it/infoCarnival/global_info.asp

THE DEFINITIVE AIS HANDBOOK

sailwx cruise ship tracking

The world of AIS  can be both confusing to newcomers and experienced professionals alike. What actually is AIS? What data does it gather? How can it help my business? Do I need AIS if I don’t have a business? Class A or Class B transponders? Do I actually need it? There’s a plethora of questions from those looking to get the most out of their tracking tools, or from those looking into entering the maritime industry.

We’ve compiled a comprehensive guide to AIS that covers a wide range of topics from specific AIS units to getting the most out of the data gathered. We’ve included some of the most commonly asked questions regarding the topic too. If you are ever in doubt, take some time to read through this document, if your question isn’t answered, feel free to contact BigOceanData.

What is AIS?

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a worldwide automatic positioning system based on fitting small transponders to vessels that continuously transmits a signal. This alerts other vessels and shore stations with AIS receivers to the presence of that vessel. The position information is supplemented with additional information about the vessel. The signals and accompanying information can then be received by any vessel, land station or satellite fitted with an AIS receiver, and is then typically displayed on a screen using interactive chart-plotting software.

Who has AIS?

International maritime law requires AIS transponders to be fitted aboard international voyaging ships with a gross tonnage of 300 tonnes or more, and on all passenger ships regardless of their size. Given its visibility and safety advantages many smaller vessels also voluntarily install AIS units. In many countries no license is required to purchase and operate either transponders or receivers.

The result is that AIS is used almost universally in the worldwide commercial maritime industry and increasingly so in the leisure marine sector. Not all vessels can be tracked by AIS. Naval and security ships generally prefer not to be tracked when on active duty, and cases are regularly reported of commercial vessels underway with their transponders turned off for unspecified reasons.  Read the entire Report here...
