#1 Explore to colours of Bo-Kaap

Bo-Kaap is a colorful and vibrant neighborhood in Cape Town, famous for its brightly painted houses and rich cultural heritage. The neighborhood is located on the slopes of Signal Hill, and is home to a predominantly Muslim community with roots in Southeast Asia, India, and East Africa.

The houses in Bo-Kaap were originally built by slaves and political exiles brought to the Cape by the Dutch in the 18th and 19th centuries. The residents of Bo-Kaap began painting their houses in bright colors in the 1970s as a form of protest against the oppressive apartheid government.

Today, the colors of Bo-Kaap are a symbol of the neighborhood's rich history and cultural diversity. The houses are painted in shades of pink, blue, green, yellow, and purple, creating a rainbow-like effect that is truly unique.

In addition to its colorful houses, Bo-Kaap is known for its mosques, minarets, and cobblestone streets. The neighborhood is also home to several museums and cultural centers that celebrate the history and heritage of the community.

#2 Visit Robben Island

Lying a few kilometres from the Waterfront, flat and windswept Robben Island is suffused by a meditative, otherworldly silence. This key site of South Africa's liberation struggle was intended to silence apartheid's domestic critics, but instead became an international focus for opposition to the regime. Measuring six square kilometres and sparsely vegetated by low scrub, it was Nelson Mandela's "home" for nearly two decades.

The ferry trip from the Waterfront takes about half an hour to reach the island. After arrival you are taken on a bus tour around the island and a tour of the prison . The bus tour stops off at several historical landmarks, the first of which is a beautiful shrine built in memory of Tuan Guru, a Muslim cleric from present-day Indonesia who was imprisoned here by the Dutch in the eighteenth century. On his release, he helped to establish Islam among slaves in Cape Town. The tour also passes a leper graveyard and church designed by Sir Herbert Baker.

Robert Sobukwe 's house is perhaps the most affecting relic of incarceration on the island. It was here that Sobukwe, leader of the Pan Africanist Congress (a radical offshoot of the ANC), was held in solitary confinement for nine years. 

No other political prisoners were allowed to speak to him, but he would sometimes gesture his solidarity with them by letting sand trickle through his fingers as they walked past.

#3 Rotate up Table Mountain

The revolving cable car is the city’s easiest route to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across town to Table Bay and the Atlantic. Table Mountain , a 1086m flat-topped massif with dramatic cliffs and eroded gorges, dominates the northern end of the Cape Peninsula. Its north face overlooks the city centre, with the distinct formations of Lion’s Head and Signal Hill to the west and Devil’s Peak to the east.

The massif’s west face is made up of a series of gable-like formations known as the Twelve Apostles. The southwest face towers over Hout Bay, and the east gazes over the Southern Suburbs. Fabulous hikes weave up and along Table Mountain, while the highly popular cable car offers dizzying views across town to Table Bay and the Atlantic.

Reckoned to be the most-climbed massif in the world, Table Mountain has suffered under the constant pounding of hikers – although the damage isn’t always obvious. Every year the mountain strikes back, taking its toll of lives. 

There are also full-day guided hikes tailored to your level of fitness. You may choose to come back the easy way by cable car, or partially abseil.

#4 Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and garden enthusiasts visiting Cape Town. Located on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world, with a stunning array of flora and fauna on display.

The garden covers an area of 528 hectares and is home to over 7,000 plant species, many of which are indigenous to South Africa. You can take a leisurely stroll along the winding pathways that meander through the garden, taking in the colorful displays of flowers, shrubs, and trees.

#6 Spot African penguins at Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach is a unique and picturesque destination located in Simon's Town, just a short drive from Cape Town. This beach is home to a colony of African penguins, making it one of the few places in the world where you can get up close and personal with these charming birds.

The penguin colony at Boulders Beach started in 1982, when a pair of penguins took up residence on the beach. Today, the colony has grown to over 2,000 birds, making it one of the largest in South Africa. You can observe the penguins in their natural habitat, watching as they swim, play, and waddle along the sand.

There are several wooden boardwalks and viewing platforms that offer visitors a close-up look at the penguins without disturbing their natural habitat. The boardwalks also wind through the unique boulder formations that give the beach its name, creating a stunning backdrop for photographs.

#7 Visit Cape Point

Cape Point is the treacherous promontory of rocks, winds and swells braved by navigators since the Portuguese first "rounded the Cape" in the fifteenth century. Plenty of wrecks lie submerged off its coast, and at Olifantsbos on the west side you can walk to a US ship sunk in 1942, and a South African coaster that ran aground in 1965. 

The Old Lighthouse, built in 1860, was too often dangerously shrouded in cloud, and failed to keep ships off the rocks, so another was built lower down in 1914. It's not always successful in averting disasters, but is still the most powerful light beaming onto the sea from South Africa.

Most visitors make a beeline for Cape Point, seeing the rest of the reserve through a vehicle window, but walking is the best way to appreciate the dramatic landscape and flora.

There are several waymarked walks in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. If you're planning a big hike it's best to set out early, and take plenty of water, as shade is rare and the wind can be foul. 

One of the most straightforward hiking routes is the signposted forty-minute trek from the car park at Cape Point to the more westerly Cape of Good Hope. For exploring the shoreline, a clear path runs down the Atlantic side, which you can join at Gifkommetjie, signposted off Cape Point Road.

The beaches

A single main road runs from the Cape Point entrance to the car park, restaurant and funicular. A number of roads branch off this, each leading to one of the series of beaches on either side of the peninsula. 

The sea is too dangerous for swimming, but there are safe tidal pools at the Buffels Bay and Bordjiesrif beaches, which are adjacent to each other, midway along the east shore. Both have braai stands, but more southerly Buffels Bay is the nicer, with big lawned areas and some sheltered spots to have a picnic.

#8 Explore all there is to see on Long Street

Long Street is one of the most iconic streets in Cape Town, and a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the city's vibrant culture and history. This bustling street is located in the heart of Cape Town's city center, and is lined with beautiful architecture, trendy shops, colorful street art, and a diverse range of restaurants, bars, and cafes.

One of the highlights of Long Street is the vibrant nightlife . The street comes alive after dark, with a wide range of bars and nightclubs catering to all tastes and preferences. From trendy rooftop bars with stunning views of the city to laid-back jazz clubs and dance floors.

During the day, Long Street is a great spot for shopping and exploring. The street is home to a variety of shops selling everything from vintage clothing to locally-made crafts and artwork.

Long Street is also known for its vibrant street art scene. You can take a self-guided walking tour of the area to discover colorful murals and graffiti art on the walls of buildings and alleyways.

#9 Go wine tasting

Stellenbosch

Located just a short drive from Cape Town, Stellenbosch is one of the oldest and most prestigious wine regions in South Africa. With over 170 wine estates to choose from, visitors can enjoy a wide range of wines, from rich reds to crisp whites, while taking in the stunning scenery of the vineyards and surrounding mountains.

Franschhoek

Known as the food and wine capital of South Africa, Franschhoek is a picturesque town located in the Cape Winelands region. Visitors can sample a variety of wines from over 50 vineyards, while also indulging in gourmet cuisine from award-winning restaurants and cafes.

Located just a short drive from Cape Town's city center, Constantia is the oldest wine region in South Africa, with a history dating back over 300 years. #10 Explore the city centre

The Upper City Centre contains the remains of the city’s 350-year-old historic core. The neighbourhood has survived the ravages of modernization and apartheid-inspired urban clearance to emerge as South Africa’s most charming city centre. 

It is a place where Europe, Asia and Africa meet in the markets, alleyways and mosques, while a jigsaw of Georgian, Cape Dutch, Victorian and twentieth-century architecture pieces together its complex history.

Among the drawcards here are Parliament, the Company’s Garden and a cluster of museums. North of Strand Street to the shore, the Lower City Centre takes in the still-functional Duncan Dock.

#11 Go shopping in Cape Town

The V&A Waterfront is Cape Town’s most popular shopping venue, with a vast range of shops in a lovely harbour setting. Nearby, the Cape Quarter, accessed off Somerset Road on the border of Der Waterkant and Green Point, is smaller and more exclusive. While most South African malls tend to follow the American model, the city centre offers much more variety.

Long Street is good for crafts, antiques and secondhand books, while Bree Street and Kloof Street are perfect for unique designer goods. For something edgier, the increasingly gentrified city-fringe districts of Woodstock and the East City have clusters of cutting-edge design shops and markets.

#12 Visit the Cape Flats and the townships

East of the northern and southern suburbs, among the industrial smokestacks and the windswept Cape Flats, reaching well beyond the airport, is Cape Town’s largest residential quarter, taking in the coloured districts, African townships and shantytown squatter camps. 

The Cape Flats are exactly that: flat, barren and populous, exclusively inhabited by Africans and coloureds in separate areas, with the M5 acting as a dividing line between it and the southern suburbs.

#13 Go on one of the township tours and homestays

Several projects are under way to encourage tourists into the townships but, as a high proportion of Cape Town's nearly two thousand annual murders take place here, the recommended way to visit is on a tour operated by residents of the Cape Flats, or in cooperation with local communities, emphasizing face-to-face encounters with ordinary people.

They include visits to shebeens, nightclubs and a township restaurant, chats with residents of squatter camps and the Langa hostels, and meetings with traditional healers and music makers, township artists and craftworkers. Some tours also take in "sites of political struggle", where significant events in the fight against apartheid occurred.

If you want to really get under the skin of the townships, there's no better way than staying in one of the township B&Bs which offer pleasant, friendly and safe accommodation.

#14 Go on a tour at the Cape Flats

Stretching east of the M5 highway and sprawling out past the airport, the windswept Cape Flats are Cape Town’s largest residential area. It takes in the coloured districts, African townships and informal settlements (shanty town squatter camps).

Once the apartheid dumping ground for black and coloured people, these township-covered flatlands now offer rewarding experiences of everyday African life and are best visited on a tour.

#15 Go whale-spotting

Whale watching is a popular activity in Cape Town, particularly during the winter months from June to November, when southern right whales migrate to the coastal waters of South Africa to mate and calve. Here are some of the best places for whale watching in Cape Town:

Located just a short drive from Cape Town, Hermanus is known as the whale-watching capital of South Africa. Visitors can enjoy shore-based whale watching from the cliffs or take a boat tour to get up close to these magnificent creatures.

False Bay, located on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula, is a popular spot for whale watching, particularly during August and September. Visitors can take a boat tour from Simon's Town or enjoy shore-based whale watching from Boyes Drive in Kalk Bay.

Cape Point, located at the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula, is another great spot for whale watching. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the ocean from the cliffs, while keeping an eye out for southern right whales, humpback whales, and dolphins.

Walker Bay, located on the southern coast of the Western Cape, is another popular spot for whale watching. Visitors can take a boat tour from the town of Gansbaai or enjoy shore-based whale watching from the cliffs at De Kelders.

#16 Visist False Bay

In summer the waters of False Bay are several degrees warmer than those on the Atlantic seaboard, which is why Cape Town’s most popular seaside towns line this flank of the peninsula. A series of historic, mountain-backed suburbs are dotted all the way south from Muizenberg, through St James, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and down to Simon’s Town.

Each has its own character with restaurants, shops and places to stay. Simon’s Town, one of South Africa’s oldest settlements, makes either a pleasant day-trip or a relaxing base for visiting Boulders Beach and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.

Cape Town has plenty of accommodation to suit all budgets, though booking ahead is recommended, especially over the Christmas and Easter holidays. The long peninsula offers many different locations, all with hotly debated advantages and varying physical beauty.

You’ll need to choose whether you want to be central, with nightlife on your doorstep, or would prefer a quieter setting closer to the ocean, in which case you’ll travel further to get into the city. The greatest concentration of accommodation is in the city centre, City Bowl and the Atlantic seaside strip as far south as Camps Bay.

Eating out is one of the highlights of visiting this world-class culinary destination, where the Mediterranean climate nurtures farms, vineyards and small producers galore. Prices are inexpensive compared with Western countries. 

For the cost of an unmemorable meal back home, you can eat imaginative dishes by outstanding chefs in an upmarket restaurant. This is the place to splash out, and you’ll find the quality of meat, from steaks to springbok, is high, with many vegetarian options also available.

A few restaurants are dedicated to Cape Malay or African cuisine, though other genres are generally prepared more skilfully. Expect fresh Cape fish at every good restaurant as well as seafood from warmer waters. 

Try the delicious local fish such as yellowtail, which is not endangered. Also check out the fun neighbourhood markets, one of the top places to visit in Cape Town for local food.

The number of days you need in Cape Town depends on your interests and the activities you plan to do.

If you're interested in exploring the city's cultural attractions, such as the District Six Museum and the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, and taking in the views from Table Mountain, you could probably see the highlights in two or three days.

If you want to explore the surrounding natural beauty and outdoor activities, like visiting the Cape of Good Hope and the Boulders Beach penguin colony, hiking in the nearby mountains, or going on a wine tour in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, you might need five to seven days.

For a more leisurely pace and to experience all that Cape Town has to offer, including its many restaurants and nightlife options, you could easily spend ten days or more.

The most common and fastest way to get to Cape Town from the UK is by flying. Many airlines offer direct flights from major UK airports, such as London Heathrow, to Cape Town International Airport. The flight time is approximately 12-14 hours.

Johannesburg to Cape Town

If you arrive in Johannesburg , your best options to get to Cape Town are:

• By plane: This is the fastest and most convenient way to get from Johannesburg to Cape Town. There are several airlines that operate daily flights between the two cities, including South African Airways, Mango, Kulula, and British Airways.
• By car: If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car in Johannesburg and take the N1 highway to Cape Town. The drive takes approximately 14 hours, but you can break it up with stops along the way. Make sure to plan your route carefully, as there are some areas that are not safe for driving at night.
• By bus : There are several bus companies that operate daily trips between Johannesburg and Cape Town, including Greyhound, Intercape, and Citiliner. The journey takes approximately 24 hours, so it's a good option if you're on a budget or prefer to travel overnight.
• By train: The Shosholoza Meyl train service operates between Johannesburg and Cape Town, and offers a comfortable and scenic journey. The journey takes approximately 26 hours, and there are several classes of accommodation available, including sleeper cabins.

Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, the warm, dryish summers balanced by cool wet winters. The best time to visit Cape Town depends on the kind of trip you’re planning; come prepared for hot days in winter and cold snaps in summer, and always pack a jumper and jacket.

For sun and swimming, the best time to visit is from October to mid- December and mid- January to Easter, when it’s light long into the evening and there’s an average of ten hours of sunshine a day.

Between mid-December and mid-January, the whole region becomes congested as the nation takes its annual seaside holiday. In Cape Town, this is serious party time, with plenty of major festivals and events; if this is when you plan to visit, arrange accommodation and transport well in advance, and expect to pay considerably more for your bed than during the rest of the year.

Despite its shorter daylight hours, the autumn period, from April to mid- May , has a lot going for it: the southeaster drops and air temperatures remain pleasantly warm and the light is sharp and bright. For similar reasons the spring month of September can be very agreeable, with the added attraction that following the winter rains the peninsula tends to be at its greenest.

Although spells of heavy rain occur in winter ( June and July ), it tends to be relatively mild, with temperatures rarely falling below 6˚C. Glorious sunny days with crisp blue skies are common, and you won’t see bare wintry trees either: indigenous vegetation is evergreen and gardens flower year-round. It’s also in July that the first migrating whales begin to appear along the southern Cape coast, usually staying till the end of November .

3 DAYS IN CAPE TOWN – THE COMPLETE ITINERARY

After years and years of thinking about visiting South Africa, I finally made it to Cape Town! I was initially drawn to South Africa to do a safari, but after some research, I realized how incredibly cool and trendy Cape Town was and I actually became more excited to visit the city than to do the safari! We only had 8 days for this holiday and decided to spend 3 days in Cape Town , the rest was split between a safari and the wine region. Honestly, 3 days in Cape Town is just enough to discover the city on the surface, and I think 5 days would be better to explore various neighborhoods and discover the city’s famous food scene! This being said, if you only have 3 days to visit Cape Town, you can follow this detailed itinerary to make the most of your time and discover iconic landmarks, and breathtaking scenery, and have a glimpse into the rich history and culture of this vibrant city.

3 DAYS IN CAPE TOWN, THE COMPLETE ITINERARY

Day 1: explore cape town’s vibrant waterfront, victoria & alfred waterfront.

Start your day by diving into the vibrant atmosphere of the iconic Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront.

Immerse yourself in the artistic buzz of the Watershed , an indoor market showcasing the creativity of over 300 local brands, Explore the colorful stalls filled with local art, fashion, natural skincare products, beautiful jewelry, and mouthwatering local delicacies. The Watershed is the perfect place to find unique souvenirs and gifts for your loved ones back home. For a mix of local and international brands, Victoria Wharf Mall has you covered, while the Alfred Mall offers a collection of upscale jewelry, art, and craft. With over 400 shops to explore, the V&A Waterfront is a shopper’s paradise!

NB : I didn’t include any other shopping destination in this 3-day Cape Town itinerary, so if you want to do some souvenir shopping, this is the time.

After indulging in some retail therapy, it’s time to satisfy your taste buds. The V&A is lined up with beautiful waterfront restaurants offering picturesque harbor views, where you can soak some sunshine and drink delicious South African wine. We had lunch on the terrace of the Life Grand Cafe and ordered some fresh salads, sandwiches, and local white wine and it was delicious. Try grabbing a spot on their first-floor terrasse for a beautiful view of the harbor,

Afternoon and sunset at Clifton Beach

Afterward, it is time to head to the beach. We decided to visit Clifton Beach , a lineup of four pristine beaches known for their crystal-clear waters and white sandy shores. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon soaking up the sun or taking a (very) refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean. We stopped by Clifton 2 and the sunset view from there was absolutely stunning.

Sundowner and dinner in Camps Bay

As the day winds down, make your way to Camps Bay, a trendy coastal neighborhood known for its palm-fringed beach and lively restaurant scene. We had dinner at Chinchilla Rooftop Cafe and Bar , a cool bar facing the beach, and serving sushis, classic bar bites, and cocktails. The perfect end to our day 1 in Cape Town.

If you have more time, consider visiting Robben Island Museum , the island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. The tour takes around 3.5 hours (including the ride to and from the island) and ferries depart from Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A. The museum is open every day, from 08 a.m. to 05 p.m.

Day 2: Discover the incredible nature and the rich history of Cape Town

Day 2 of your 3 days in Cape Town will be a great mix of nature and history.

Hiking Lion Head

Kickstart your day with an early morning hike up Lion’s Head, one of the most famous hikes in town, offering stunning panoramic views of Cape Town, Table Mountain, and the surrounding coastline. The hike took us around 45 min, but I have to admit we were pretty quick and didn’t take many breaks (humble bragging, I know!) .

Here are a few recommendations to make the most of your hike:

• Consider leaving from the departing point around 60 to 75 min before sunrise.
• For the first 20 min you are on the side of the mountain with no view of the sunrise at all, so think about it when planning your departure time.
• There is no lighting along the way, so consider taking a flashlight. We didn’t have one and had no issue, but on some days the moon might be brighter than others.
• Toward the end, the trail splits into 2 paths. One way continues as a regular hiking trail while the other goes vertical, and involves climbing metal ladders and pulling yourself up with chains. We chose the latter and it was a fun little climb. On the way down we used the regular hiking trail. Both paths reach the same final viewpoint.
• The last 5 minutes of the hike require climbing through big boulders and using your hands to pull yourself up. It is the most demanding part of the hike, but it is also very short!
• Don’t expect to be all alone up there. The sooner you arrive, the better the spot you will be able to grab to watch the sunrise.
• Wear good shoes! Sneakers are fine, but don’t attempt to do this hike in flip-flops.
• Bring water and snacks, as you will find nothing along the way.

The sunrise view from the top of Lion’s Head is truly amazing and really something you shouldn’t miss during your 3 days in Cape Town.

Explore the Bo Kaap neighborhood

Next on the itinerary of the day, it is time for some cultural visits. First, immerse yourself in the vibrant Bo Kaap neighborhood. Known for its colorful houses and rich Cape Malay heritage, this area is a photographer’s paradise. Take a leisurely stroll through its quaint streets and learn about the history and culture of the Cape Malay community.

Visit District Six Museum

Then continue your journey by visiting the District Six Museum . This poignant museum documents the forced removal and displacement of thousands of residents during the apartheid era. Although we gained insights into the struggles and resilience of the affected communities through exhibits and personal stories, we would have learned way more with a guided tour. Such guided tours are available at the following hours: 9h30, 10h30, 11h30, and 13h30 (subject to availability, better to pre-book).

The museum is open from Monday to Saturday, from 09 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entrance fee is 50 ZAR (±3 USD).

Catch the sunset from Table Mountain

In the afternoon, make your way to Table Mountain , Cape Town’s most iconic landmark. Ascend to the summit via the cable car for incredible views of the city, coastline, and surrounding mountains. One thing I didn’t expect what how huge the top of the mountain was. You can easily walk around for several hours, marveling at the diverse flora and fauna that make this UNESCO World Heritage site a true natural wonder. Therefore, consider reaching the top between 60 and 90 min before sunset, that should give you plenty of time to explore and find a quiet little spot for an incredibly beautiful sunset . The cable car can get very busy, so book your tickets in advance and don’t hesitate to show up early. Also, check the weather conditions on the day, as the cable car can be shut down in case of excessive wind.

If you have more time consider visiting the Old Biscuit Mill , an old factory transformed into a beautiful retail space with local and artisanal shops and delicious restaurants. During the weekend, the outdoor area also welcomes the very cool Neighbourgoods Market . (Saturdays & Sunday from 9am).

Day 3: Road trip to Cape Point

On the last day of this 3 days Cape Town itinerary, let’s embark on a stunning road trip to Cape Point , a stunning nature reserve located at the tip of the Cape Peninsula.

Muizenberg & Kalk Bay

The first stop of this road trip could be the town of Muizenberg, a surfer hub renowned for its colorful beach huts. Personally, I didn’t find the place very interesting but it was a cold, windy, gloomy day, so maybe during the summer and if you are a surfer you might enjoy it!

Otherwise, I recommend heading straight to the lovely village of Kalk Bay , where you can browse through eclectic shops, bookstores, and antic galleries. Walk around the harbor and pay a visit to the local seals before having lunch in one of the local eateries on the seafront. If you want something a bit fancy with a beautiful sea view, try Harbour House . If you prefer more authentic local fish and chips, try the iconic Kalky’s ! The servings are massive and messy and the fries are delicious! I loved it <3.

Boulders Beach and the penguin colony

Continue your journey to the iconic, and oh-so Instagrammable Boulders Beach, home to a colony of African penguins . Get up close and personal with these adorable creatures as they waddle along the beach and enjoy the turquoise waters. There are actually 2 separate areas in Boulders Beach. One with a viewing platform from where you can see most of the penguins ( here ) and one where you can actually go on the beach, swim, and be close to some penguins ( here ) . If you do not want to pay anything and still see a few penguins, I recommend parking here and walking along the Burgers Walk, all the way to Windmill Beach . The sea there is absolutely spectacular and you should encounter a few penguins on your way!!

Boulders Beach Conservation fee costs 176 ZAR (10 USD) for foreign adults. Entrance timing varies per month. You can find more details here .

Cape Point Nature Reserve and Cape of Good Hope

Finally, from Boulders Beach, make your way to the stunning Cape Point Nature Reserve. Ascend to the viewpoint either by the Flying Dutchman Funicular or opt for a scenic hike to experience the breathtaking vistas from the famous Cape Point Lighthouse. The view from up there is absolutely spectacular and one of the most beautiful places we have been during these 3 days in Cape Town.

If you have time, hike down to the iconic Cape of Good Hope . If you do hike, beware of the colony of baboons living there, who will have no mercy on you if you carry any food. You can also just drive to the Cape of Good Hope (only a 10-minute drive from Cape Point) and soak in the stunning view and atmosphere, especially as the sun goes down.

Did you know : Unlike popular belief, Cape of Good Hope is not the most Southern point of the African continent, Cape Agulhas is. A quick look at Google Maps will make that very clear!!

The regular entrance fee for Cape Point is 376 ZAR (±20 USD). Last entrance by 6 p.m. in summer and 5 p.m. in winter. Last exit by sunset time.

Chapman’s Peak

On your return way to Cape Town, drive by Scarborough Beach, Misty Cliffs, and onto Chapman’s Peak . Sometimes compared to the Amalfi Coast, the drive has some truly spectacular cliffside scenery with many viewing points along the road. We stopped at the main Chapman’s Peak Drive Lookout point and soaked in the stunning views of Hout Bay. The drive at sunset is absolutely gorgeous and a must-do during your 3 days in Cape Town. From Chapman’s Peak, it is roughly 40-minute drive back to the city.

Alternatively, if you are more wine trip than road trip, you could consider spending this 3rd day exploring the beautiful wine regions of Stellenbosh, Franschhoek, and Paarl, located less than 2 hours drive from Cape Town. The best way to do so is with a guided tour, so you can enjoy all the wine tasting without the worries of driving. This small group Wineland tour guided by a wine specialist includes 2 of the most beautiful estates in the region, Delaire Graff Wine Estate, and Babylonstoren . This private tour , includes a visit of Stellenbosh and Franschhoek towns, as well as 4 premium estates, Delaire Graff Wine Estate , Jordan Wine,Lanzerac Estate, and Richard Branson’s Mont Rochelle Estate. Finally, you could hop onto the iconic Wine tram to discover the estates you want, at your own pace. It is so much fun, I highly recommend it!

WHERE TO STAY FOR 3 DAYS IN CAPE TOWN

A few areas and hotels I recommend in Cape Town:

• The waterfront, from Camps Bay to V&A is beautiful, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and bars, The Marly is one of the most beautiful hotels in Cape Town, with a panoramic view of Camps Bays and the Twelve Apostles Mountain Range as a stunning backdrop.
• Cape Town City Center is very central and convenient to visit the city. It is a much less privileged area than the seaside though, so you need to be a bit more alert. During our 3 days in Cape Town we stayed at the Gorgeous George Hotel and absolutely loved it. The rooms are large, modern, and comfortable, with a stunning black and white bathroom. The whole hotel is super arty and stylish with a vibe quite similar to The Hoxton hotels. Gigi, the rooftop restaurant is excellent from breakfast to dinner! You can also consider the Kloof Street area, with its abundance of trendy cafes and restaurants.
• Constancia is an affluent suburb South of Cape Town known for its vineyards. A little bit far from the center, but truly stunning, it is the perfect place if you want to relax away from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town. My dream hotel in Constancia is The Alphen Boutique Hotel and Spa , a classic mansion with a stunning pool and a perfectly landscaped garden. THE DREAM!

BEST PLACES TO EAT IN CAPE TOWN

Cape Town is a paradise for foodies, and it was incredibly hard to decide where to eat as there was so much choice. I think my next trip to Cape Town will be fully dedicated to exploring the food scene so I can create a foodie itinerary!! But in the meantime, here are the restaurants we tried and liked during our 3 days in Cape Town:

• Life Grand Cafe : If you are in the V&A neighborhood, the Life Grand Cafe is a good choice to grab lunch. Take a table by the sea where the atmosphere is lively, or head to their upstairs terrasse for a beautiful view over the harbor. | Best for a casual lunch in the sun
• Gigi Rooftop : Located downtown, this cool restaurant and bar serves delicious food and cocktails in a festive atmosphere. Ideal for dinner, it is also a good option for a relaxed breakfast. | Best f or dinner & drinks, or breakfast!
• Pot Luck Club : Hop on a glass elevator or walk up the 6th floor to the trendy Pot Luck Club. It’s perched atop an old flour silo at the Old Biscuit Mill from where you have a stunning 180-degree view of the city. The atmosphere has a very industrial New York loft vibe and the food is super creative. We visited on a Sunday and they were only serving their tasting menu, which was unexpected, but a great way to discover many different plates! It is not cheap by Cape Town standards but it is one of the coolest restaurants in the city. Early reservation is a must! | Bes t for lunch and dinner
• Neighbourgoods Market : Also located in the Old Biscuit Mill, this weekend’s market brings together local artisans, designers, and plenty of street food stalls, from local cuisines, to Turkish, Korean, and other internal flavors. Topped with live music, the atmosphere is really relaxed. The Neighbourgoods Market is really a must-visit place if your 3 days in Cape Town happen to fall on the weekend. Open every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. | Best for a casual lunch
• Chinchilla Camps Bay : A cool rooftop bar set right by the beach. The perfect place to watch the sunset with a cocktail. They also have a good selection of sushis, platters to share, and other bar bites. | Best f or a sunset drink with a view
• The Bungalow : Located on Clifton, the Bungalow serves Mediterranean-style cuisine by the sea. There are a lot of seafood options, but meat eaters will be not disappointed either. | Best f or lunch or an early dinner to catch the sunset
• La Colombe: Want to treat yourself to some world-class fine dining, then head to La Colombe. We didn’t have the chance to visit during our time in Cape Town, but we did have dinner at its sister restaurant La Petite Colombe in Franschhoek and it was incredible, so I have no doubt that La Colombe would be amazing. La Colombe serves tasting menus made of 8 to 12 plates which are equally stunning and delicious. A truly unique experience, that needs to be booked (way) ahead. | Best f or an upscale culinary experience for lunch to dinner

Travel tips: We made all our restaurant reservations via the app DinePlan . Almost all the restaurants are on there, so it is really easy to manage all your reservations. Some of the restaurants require a downpayment to book, which is usually refundable if you cancel no less than 24 hours ahead.

WHAT ABOUT PERSONAL SAFETY IN CAPE TOWN?

It is no secret that South Africa is quite dangerous and everyone I have talked to since we came back from Cape Town has asked me about our safety during the trip. It is not an easy topic and depends on everyone’s own personal experience but I will address it as transparently as I can.

First of all, I went to Cape Town fully aware that safety was a concern, and for that reason, I traveled without expensive belongings. So no luxury bags or fancy watches/jewellery, etc. The only thing really valuable I always had with me was my camera. While in Cape Town, the feeling of safety varies a lot from one neighborhood to the next. V&A and the seaside (Clifton, Camps Bay) are pretty trendy and wealthy areas where you will feel safe.

The city center (around George Mall for example) is less privileged and you will encounter a lot more people roaming the streets, going through trash cans, and begging, either in the streets or at the traffic lights for example. You might also encounter some small-scale slums by the side of the road, which are heartbreaking and uncomfortable (like around The Castle of Good Hope). Although poverty doesn’t equal crime, I was not always at ease and was quite careful with my bag and camera, trying my best not to look like the super tourist I was.

Overall it is important to be street smart, to keep alert, and to not go to any places that give you even the slightest doubt. At night we went out with Ubers and only had good experiences with friendly drivers.

Even though you drive past a huge township just outside the Cape Town airport, it would be quite easy to ignore the poverty in Cape Town, and frankly, I think if we had stayed by the seaside we could have overlooked it completely. But I am glad we didn’t as it is such an integral part of what Cape Town and South Africa is and it is important to face it. You will also quickly realize that the poverty divide follows the race line, and that made me think a lot about the terrible ravages of Apartheid and the huge impact it still has on people’s lives today.

This being said everything I included in this Cape Town itinerary is absolutely safe to do! Cape Town is such an incredibly vibrant city to visit and I recommend it wholeheartedly, and I can’t wait to go back myself to discover more.

USEFUL INFORMATION TO ORGANISE YOUR 3-DAY CAPE TOWN ITINERARY

3 days is not quite enough to explore all the amazing experiences Cape Town has to offer but if this is all the time you have, this itinerary should give you a great first taste of the city. Planning 5 to 7 days in Cape Town will give you the opportunity to do so much more! If you have more than 3 days, here are a few things you could add to your Cape Town itinerary:

• Exploring the Winelands: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are less than 2h drive outside of Cape Town.
• Doing a safari in one of the private game reserves in the Western Cape . We stayed 2 days in Gondwana Private Game Reserve and it was an amazing experience.
• Visiting the Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden.
• Learning more about Nelson Mandela and the Apartheid at Robben Island Museum .
• Spend time at some of Cape Town’s beautiful beaches, such as Clifton, Camps Bay, or Bloubergstrand Beach for an incredible view of Table Mountain.
• Checking out the street art in the Woodstock neighborhood.

– The best time to visit Cape Town

December to February – These are the peak summer months in Cape Town and the weather is hot and sunny, This is the perfect time of the year to visit Cape Town if you want to enjoy long, warm days at the beach. This is also the peak season for tourism, which means prices and occupancy are high, so it is a good idea to book ahead of time.

March to April – These shoulder months are amazing for visiting Cape Town, particularly if you enjoy outdoor activities. The weather is cooler and the city is not too crowded with tourists. Temperatures are between 15°c and 27°c which is a bit chilly to go to the beach, but great to do some hiking or explore the city on foot. Pack a couple of warmer clothes for the evenings that can be a little chilly.

May to August – Cape Town’s winter months are the coldest and rainiest. If you enjoy sipping some wine by the fireplace and exploring Cape Town’s delicious food scene or many museums, this could actually be a great time to visit! July and August are also the best months for whale watching. Temperatures range from 13°c to 20°c so pack some warm clothes and layers (the weather can change quickly and you might experience some beautiful sunny days!)

September to November – The spring months bring beautiful blooming landscapes and sunny weather, so it is a great time for outdoor activities like hiking and beach hopping without the tourist crowd.

Cape Town is quite a spread-out city and some of the places to visit in this itinerary are quite far apart, so walking around town is not the best solution. Here are 3 good options to discover Cape Town: .

• Renting a car : This is a great option, especially if you are planning some day trips from Cape Town, such as the Cape Peninsula Road trip included in this itinerary, or if you are continuing your South Africa journey afterward. Like in other major cities, parking can be challenging in Cape Town, so my advice is to take your car only when absolutely necessary and to use Uber the rest of the time. Keep in mind that there are “parking assistants” in most places, who will keep an eye on your car in exchange for a tip. I don’t think it is an official thing, but it is commonly accepted. Also, don’t forget that driving is on the left side of the road in South Africa! We usually book our cars with Rentalcars , as they have great choices and competitive pricing.
• Uber : Using Uber is a great and efficient way to go around Cape Town, especially if you only have 3 days. The cars are not always in great condition, but in my experience, the drivers are always nice and the waiting time is very limited. It is also the perfect solution to go out at night. Taking Ubers is also quite inexpensive, with a 10-minute ride costing around 60 ZAR (~ 3 USD in Sept. 2023)
• Public transport; Although I didn’t experience it myself, there is always the option of taking public transport. You can find more details on the Cape Town bus system here .

– Electricity supply and load shedding

South Africa is currently (in 2023) suffering major electricity shortages, so there are some scheduled power sheds throughout the day. It basically means that at certain times, in certain areas, the whole electricity will shut down. It is quite impressive the first few times it happens as you see an entire neighborhood suddenly go dark. Luckily most hotels and restaurants have generators that kick in as soon as the main power grid is disconnected, so the impact on visitors is quite minimal. Still, here are a few advice to minimize the disturbance of load shedding on your holidays:

• Contact your accommodation and enquire about alternative power supply, in particular if you are staying in an AirBnb type of accommodation.
• Make sure to charge all your electronics when the power is available
• Keep enough cash with you as the ATM will be down during load shedding.
• If you are in a self-catering accommodation, make sure to prepare your meals during power time (unless you have a gas stove).
• Think about refueling your car when the power is available
• Consider bringing a flashlight.

– How expensive is Cape Town

Always a difficult question to answer as everyone allocates their travel budget differently. I would say that because of the South African Rands weakness vs. the EUR and the USD, Cape Town is quite an affordable city if you are holding these strong currencies. Here are a few costs to give you an idea, from tourist attraction prices to fine dining splurge!

• Average Uber trip within Cape Town: 6 USD
• Entrance to Boulder Beach: 10 USD
• Afternoon cable car ticket to Table Moutain: 18 USD
• Gorgeous George Hotel : 170 USD/night
• Lunch for 2 at Life Grand Cafe (incl. wine): 45 USD
• Fine dining for 2 at La Petite Colombe (incl. wine): 240 USD

As you drive into De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa’s Western Cape region, you’ll see majestic herds of eland, one of the world’s largest antelopes. You might also catch sight of a few Cape mountain zebra, the endangered cousins of Africa’s famous striped beasts.

But while admiring the charismatic animals here, pay attention to the ungainly ostriches strolling among them. They are a curious link to some of the world’s earliest art, found in the ancient sea caves of the nearby coast.

Abstract geometric designs carved into the giant shells of ostrich eggs around 65,000 years ago are among the oldest known examples of symbolic creations by humans. Dozens of carved fragments have been found in Klipdrift Shelter, an archeological site on the reserve.

A new exhibition at this stark but stunning site calls it a land of “extreme plenty” – a prehistoric coastal paradise where an abundance of shellfish and mammals, along with a mild climate and protective caves, allowed Stone Age humans enough time for the luxury of creating patterns on the eggshells they used as water containers.

This connection to early human history is among the hidden gems of the Western Cape. Most tourists tend to fly into Cape Town and join the crowds on the city’s beaches or the Table Mountain cable car. By venturing off the beaten path, just a few hours in almost any direction from Cape Town, you can discover a host of unexpected pleasures – and often have them almost to yourself.

As South Africa celebrates the 30th anniversary of its first democratic election after its liberation from apartheid, the country is increasingly recognizing the importance of tourism, which supports nearly 10 per cent of its work force. Cape Town, the legislative capital, remains the hub, drawing record numbers of inbound passengers at its airport this year and regularly topping global lists of favourite cities, with its spectacular new museums and waterfront shops. But for a glimpse of the true South Africa, go beyond its limits.

In my 15 years as a Johannesburg-based correspondent, I’ve come to treasure road trips across the country, from mountains to desert to ocean. A vast network of wildlife parks is easily accessible, with comfortable accommodations and good facilities. Roads are not always up to Canadian standards but mostly fine, and South Africans are famously friendly.

For our latest five-day meander through back roads and coastal hideaways, we head two hours east of Cape Town to the gorgeous town of Montagu on the edge of the Karoo desert, where we spend the first night.

Montagu is known for its nearby Boer War fort, but nowadays its excellent museum and extensive herb gardens are an entry point to the culture of the Khoisan, the Indigenous people of Southern Africa. The museum, housed in a 117-year-old former church, features displays of medicinal herbs from Indigenous remedies, handed down to generations and studied by the museum’s staff for the past three decades.

A stroll around the historic town reveals many other attractions: good restaurants, an art-deco hotel and hundreds of the African sacred ibises and egrets that roost in the trees above a town pond.

A two-hour drive to the south – past fields of grain, dotted with South Africa’s national bird, the blue crane – brought us to De Hoop. The nature reserve was a farm in the 18th and 19th centuries, and its historic homestead was later declared a national monument. Today the reserve is a successful partnership between the provincially owned CapeNature agency and several private companies that provide cottage-style accommodation, dining and leisure activities.

At low tide, guides bring visitors to rock pools, where you can see the same abundance of shellfish that allowed the early humans to flourish. Whale season is from June to December, bringing southern right whales into the bay. The land-based whale watching here is among the best in the country. For a more adventurous pursuit, you can see whether your snowboarding skills translate to the emerging sport of sandboarding on the massive sand dunes near the ocean.

The birdwatching is exceptional. We spotted 45 of the reserve’s 260 bird species in a two-hour walk along De Hoop’s inland lake. There are flocks of pelicans, egrets, cormorants and flamingos. De Hoop is part of the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, protected for its thousands of endemic plant species and its unique fynbos vegetation, an exceptionally diverse type of coastal shrub.

Endangered birds are also protected here. De Hoop is home to a newly established colony of African penguins, the latest attempt to stave off the extinction of the continent’s only penguin species. There’s also a colony of Cape vultures – the last surviving in the Western Cape. Neither the penguin colony nor the Klipdrift archeological site are open to visitors, but there are guided walks to the vulture colony to see the endangered birds swooping overhead.

Because there are no predators in this corner of the country, you can stroll safely among the wildlife: bontebok antelopes, ostriches, otters, rock hyraxes and more. There are good hiking trails along the lake, where spectacular golden orb spiders can be spotted. The reserve is also the end point of the renowned 55-kilometre, five-day Whale Trail, one of South Africa’s most popular coastal hiking routes. (Advance bookings required.)

De Hoop employs about 200 people, providing much-needed jobs in a country of high unemployment. Most employees are local residents from lower-income communities who have been trained into skilled positions.

One of them is Dalfrenzo Laing, from the nearby town of Napier, who survived a troubled adolescence of crime and drug use. In 2008 he was laid off from his job at a petrol station and had no idea what to do. Recruited for an eight-month marine guiding course, he became De Hoop’s first guide.

Ten years ago, when I first visited De Hoop, he was our guide to the starfish and jellyfish at the tidal pools. Today he is assistant general manager for the De Hoop Collection, the company that operates the white-washed cottages and farmhouses where visitors stay, and he serves as its ambassador to the local communities. “I’ve visited many schools and I hope I’ve inspired them,” he told me. “I tell them about my journey and how nature has helped to transform me.”

After two nights at De Hoop, we drove an hour westward to the relaxing coastal town of Agulhas. The big attraction here is Cape Agulhas – the southernmost tip of Africa and the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. (Many people wrongly assume that the Cape of Good Hope is the continent’s southern tip.)

Portuguese sailors called it the Cape of Needles in the 1480s after discovering that their compass needles all pointed precisely true north from here. But the name also evokes the sharp rocks and dangerous reefs in the waters of the often-stormy cape, which have wrecked roughly 150 ships over the centuries, giving it another name: the Graveyard of Ships.

Agulhas National Park is now building an interpretative centre and expanded visitor facilities around the cape’s distinctive 175-year-old lighthouse – one of the oldest in the country, and still functioning. Inside is a small museum, and you can climb to a very windy viewpoint at the top.

The southern tip of Africa, a few hundred metres past the lighthouse, is marked with a monument and a giant stylized map of the continent. A few kilometres down the coast is the Meisho Maru shipwreck, the eerie rusted remains of a Japanese fishing trawler that crashed into the underwater rocks during a storm in 1982.

Another nearby attraction is the town of Struisbaai, with a sandy beach that extends for 14 kilometres (although the water is probably too cold for most swimmers). Stingrays swim into the harbour every day in search of discarded entrails from the fishing boats. The biggest and most popular has been named Parrie.

After an excellent dinner at a fish-and-chips spot and a night at an Agulhas hotel, we drove back to Cape Town, making time along the way to stop for tastings at Africa’s southernmost wineries, including Strandveld and Black Oystercatcher. The terroir for these wine estates produces distinctive sauvignon blancs because of its slow-ripening yields, small grapes and cool Atlantic Ocean winds.

An alternative coastal route back to Cape Town is slightly longer, but it allows you to visit the beguiling town of Hermanus, the country’s whale capital, with its 12-kilometre cliff walk and Whale Crier who alerts tourists with the foghorn-like blare of his kelp horn when there is a sighting.

On the coastal route of this five-day loop, an essential final stop is the town of Betty’s Bay, a former whaling station. Here, you can visit one of South Africa’s best-known colonies of African penguins, giving you a glimpse of the charming but endangered birds that De Hoop’s new colony is trying to revive. Scientists at Betty’s Bay are measuring the diet of these plucky penguins, studying ways to safeguard their future – and keep the tourists coming.

There are no direct flights to South Africa from Canada, but there are many flights from cities such as Atlanta, Newark, N.J., London, Paris and Frankfurt, with some flights going directly to Cape Town.

Car rental is easy and efficient at Cape Town airport. Driving is on the left, as in Britain. If you don’t want to self-drive, some tourism agencies allow you to hire a guide with a car.

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted but carry some South African rands for petrol-station tips, car guards and parking garages. Most ATMs accept international debit cards, but don’t get into conversation with the smooth-talking con men who sometimes hover around the cash machines.

Crime is always a concern, but it is much rarer in small towns and tourist sites, where the vibe is relaxed and friendly. Stay alert in the big cities, keep your car doors locked and windows up, and put valuables in your trunk.

•  South New Smyrna Beach  (Canaveral National Seashore), there may be parking costs. New Smyrna Beach features 17 miles of white sandy beaches. An eclectic and quaint beach town, despite its reputation as the "Shark Bite Capital of the World," New Smyrna Beach has always been a haven for surfers who come for the waves.

•  Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park , 6656 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach.
