Train travel is all the rage, with Belmond making headlines for its luxe offerings from Scotland, Italy, to Malaysia. In Vietnam, the North-South railway line courses the entire length of the coast. In recent decades, it has become a popular option for tourists to see the country while skipping the carnage and carbon footprint of flying. Now, travelers originating in both Hoi An and Nha Trang have a premium option connecting the two cities through Quy Nhon: The Vietage by Anantara . Launched in 2020 as a way to whisk guests from Anantara’s Hoi An Resort to its newest property, Quy Nhon Villas in Binh Dinh Province, the private carriage debuted its latest route in May 2024, linking the 3 cities across the approximately 315-mile route.

The clientele includes well-heeled travelers who want to skip the airport and journey in style. Couples looking to add a smart leg of slow travel to a romantic trip for their honeymoon. And slow travelers who hate the carnage of airports, and wish to reduce their carbon footprint.

To make the trip more sustainable, Anantara , a part of the Minor hotel group, has enacted a plan that includes strict waste management programs, recycling, and community support programs. Both resorts connected by train, Anantara Hoi An and Quy Nhon Villas, have received Green Growth 2050 certification, with the former receiving Platinum status (the first and only in Vietnam) and the latter earning Gold.

Morning travelers heading south on the route from Hoi An to Quy Nhon enjoy a light breakfast of warm pastries including croissants and pain au chocolat served with local coffee or tea. A few hours later, staff pre a three-course menu selected in advance. Dishes take inspiration from regional flavors and ingredients such as Quy Nhon seafood salad with green papaya, carrot and mint, and a green bean and quinoa salad peppered with lemongrass, tofu, peanuts and Hoi An chili sauce.

Mains include Hoi An chicken rice, and a braised wagyu beef neck accented with local vegetables of carrots and zucchini with green tea and sesame jus. Desserts infused the flavors of Vietnamese fruits like a dragon fruit compote atop a passion fruit tart, and strawberries sourced from the famous mountain city of Da Lat, served with coconut yogurt and local basil.

Wines by the glass range from a sparkling from Australia, Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, Chardonnay from Chile, and an Italian Primitivo. Spirits enthusiasts can dive into a selection of Vietnamese gins highlighted through specialty cocktails, a gin and tonic, or simply neat to sip and explore. Guests looking to bump up their wine experience can select from a reserve bottle list featuring Champagne, white Burgundy, Barolo, and Bordeaux.

As far as amenitites, it’s a trainn car, so it’s light on extras—but a small massage room provides a moment of calm while guests receive a 15-minute shoulder and back rub in a kneeling chair. Beneath the seat is a box with blankets, a neck pillow, and slippers. Complimentary Wi-fi keeps you connected, though you’re better off living in the moment by disconnecting.

Anantara’s The Vietage makes two trips daily, a morning run, and an evening route, linking Hoi An and Nha Trang, while stopping at Dieu Tri Station outside the port town Quy Nhon, along the way.

My family's been to 44 states by car. It was nice, but now we pick train travel because it's superior in many ways.

• After taking road trips throughout the US, I tried traveling by Amtrak train instead. 
• My experiences on the rails have been comfortable and hassle-free, albeit not the most efficient.
• Trains aren't the answer for every trip, but I've begun to incorporate them into more of my travels.

Ahead of my family vacation to California, I dreamed of cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway . There was just one problem: My son suffered from terrible car sickness. 

To avoid scrubbing vomit out of a rental car's upholstery, I booked tickets on the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Oakland to Santa Barbara.

The smooth, nine-hour journey offered all of the magnificent ocean views I would've wanted to see on the road trip, with none of the upset stomachs.

Since that trip, my son has found ways to manage his car sickness, and we've successfully traveled to 44 states by car. But there's a host of reasons my family is still choosing to return to rail travel .

Many Amtrak trains offer scenic views of some of the country's most beautiful locales.

When it comes to spectacular views , there's a lot to see from train windows. 

Though not all of Amtrak's routes pass idyllic settings, some journey through the US' most beautiful landscapes. I've enjoyed gazing at vineyards, mountains, harbor seals, and more on my rail travels. 

Many Amtrak trains, including the Coast Starlight, have observation cars with giant picture windows designed with sightseeing in mind.

As someone who's generally the designated driver on road trips , I savor the ability to sit back and take in the stunning scenery without the fear of taking my eyes off the road for too long.

Some trains also stop in underrated destinations I wouldn't have otherwise visited.

Amtrak offers picturesque long-haul journeys through the Rockies , the American Southwest, and beyond.

The prospect of gazing at snowcapped mountains and soaring red-rock formations is exciting, but these journeys also offer a compelling opportunity to stop and explore less-touted areas along the way — ones that I probably wouldn't go out of my way to visit otherwise.

Though some of the highlights from my road trips have been stumbling upon hidden gems in locales often labeled as flyover states (like spots in the US' heartland), driving through the Midwest's flatlands can feel like a bit of a slog.

However, I find stretches of farmland infinitely more charming when I view them out of a train window instead of a car dashboard.

Depending on the itinerary and season, traveling by train can be more affordable than driving.

Between gas prices and rental-car charges, road trips can be expensive ventures.

When it comes to Amtrak trains, you can expect to pay a premium for a private room in a sleeping car or a coveted last-minute ticket. However, you can usually find reasonably priced tickets with some advance planning.

On a trip my family took from New York to Pennsylvania, all three of our tickets for the Amtrak Keystone Service cost me a total of $47.50 — an absolute steal considering our trip fell during a peak travel period.

In many major cities, I probably would've paid the same amount for a few hours of parking. 

I feel safer traveling by train than by car, especially in poor weather conditions.

It gives me peace of mind to know that taking a train is statistically safer than driving a car . Plus, Amtrak has a lot of safety standards in place .

Though I feel confident in my driving abilities, I prefer not to be behind the wheel in certain situations, like when I have to navigate Manhattan streets or battle icy road conditions.

Trains are usually less impacted by weather, making them a solid transportation option in less-than-ideal conditions.

Amtrak's seats feel wider and more comfortable than the ones in most cars.

It's no surprise that traveling can make you feel a bit cramped, especially if you're constricted to a car seat for a long drive.

Regardless of how I travel, I'm always very eager to reach my destination and stretch my legs. In my experience, I've found that even the most bare-bones Amtrak trains offer wider seats than I've seen in most cars and a reasonable amount of legroom.

The trains' observation and dining cars are a real treat for my family since they allow us to enjoy peaceful moments, play a rousing game, or simply take advance of the freedom that comes with not being strapped in one place.

Rail journeys give me time and space to work, spend time with family, and rest.

Train travel isn't always the fastest way to reach my destination, but I've found that it's the mode of transportation that gives me the most time to be productive .

As someone who works remotely, trains are the perfect place to multitask and catch up on my to-do list, something I can't accomplish as easily in cars.

I can't use my computer while driving, and attempting to do so in the passenger seat makes me queasy. However, traveling by train gives me an easy way to finish work, help my son with his homework, read a book, or take a nap.

Trains aren't the right option for every trip, but I look forward to incorporating more of them in my future travels.

Amtrak trains have provided a lot of benefits for my family, but like any mode of transportation, they come with their own set of downsides. Trains, especially long-haul ones, are known to be plagued with delays. So you do have to pack some patience and be flexible. 

The routes Amtrak offers can also be limiting and inconvenient, with the journey between some destinations requiring multiple train changes that take you hundreds of miles and many hours out of the way.

I've decided that they're a great way for my family to travel in addition to road trips, but not in place of them.

Wildfires are becoming more frequent and more severe — and where there’s fire, there’s smoke. That smoke can travel thousands of miles.

As more people are exposed to wildfire smoke, researchers are only just beginning to understand how it harms our health.

How Wildfire Smoke Threatens Health

In August 2020, as hundreds of wildfires burned across California, thick smoke billowed through the sky for weeks, causing a record-setting 30-day streak of consecutive air quality warnings in the Bay Area. Doctors in Northern California reported a 43 percent increase in strokes and other cardiovascular issues during that time. Hospital admissions rose by 12 percent. Some researchers estimated that the smoke may have been a factor in thousands of deaths.

Environmental scientists believe that wildfires pose a risk to health long after a fire stops burning. But there are many factors they still don’t fully understand, like exactly how smoke moves through the body or how exposure to it might affect human health long after the haze clears.

Most of what scientists know so far comes from correlational studies, which can reveal potential links between smoke exposure and health outcomes but can’t show cause and effect. These types of studies have linked wildfire-smoke exposure to a higher risk of heart attacks , strokes , complications with pregnancy and childbirth , mental health issues and some cancers .

Research on cells and in lab animals such as mice and monkeys suggests that smoke disrupts the cells responsible for managing our immune responses, which can lead to increased inflammation and stress . Those factors are known to be involved in many of the conditions associated with smoke exposure.

As researchers examine the impact of wildfire smoke, they are also looking at decades of studies on urban and industrial pollution for clues about its effects.

That research suggests that people exposed to smoke often inhale particles of it.

Some of those particles are big enough to see, like ash floating in the air. But the most troubling particles are microscopic.

Particulate matter, or particles known as PM10, are just one-seventh of the diameter of a human hair or smaller. A subset of those, known as PM2.5 , are even smaller.

PM10 particles, including PM2.5 , can contain a mix of substances such as carbon from grasses and toxic heavy metals released by burning cars, electronics and buildings.

The mucus and hairs in your nose can trap larger particles, and the mucus and cilia in your upper airway can catch some as well, said Luke Montrose, an environmental toxicologist at Colorado State University. But some PM2.5 or smaller particles can bypass these defenses and penetrate the deepest parts of your lungs.

Dr. Montrose described the lungs as an upside-down tree: Smoke travels through your airway, the trunk. The smallest particles can reach the tips of the tree’s leaves, the alveoli. These air sacs deposit oxygen from your breath into your bloodstream. When PM2.5 particles travel into them, it can impair lung function and cause irritation.

Even smaller particles of smoke, ones a thousandth the size of PM2.5 matter, may travel from your lungs into your bloodstream, which can cause damage at the cellular level, said Carlos Gould, an environmental health scientist and assistant professor at the University of California, San Diego. This could explain some of the health effects researchers have linked to wildfire smoke, including heart conditions, infertility and dementia.

Those who are very close to a wildfire could also ingest particles that settle into drinking water or food. Those particles are dangerous to consume , as they can contain potentially cancer-causing substances like benzene. Skin and hair follicles may also absorb smoke, which can cause itching and skin irritation .

Unanswered Questions

Untangling the relationship between health and smoke is challenging. There are huge variations in how healthy people are before smoke exposure, how much smoke they are exposed to and what’s in that smoke.

Two of the biggest questions researchers want to answer: How much time do you need to spend in smoky air to suffer health effects? And how smoky does the air have to be for that to happen?

One metric of wildfire smoke pollution is the air-quality index, which measures five pollutants on a scale of 0 to 500. Generally speaking, A.Q.I. levels over 100 are considered potentially risky for children, older adults and those with heart or lung diseases, and levels over 200 are considered “very unhealthy” for everyone.

Researchers are just beginning to study how different levels of air pollution might affect health by tracking the outcomes of wildfire survivors over time. After a fire in 2017 , researchers at the University of Montana looked at members of a community that was exposed to heavy smoke for six weeks and followed them for two years.

Over those six weeks, the average A.Q.I. in the area was about 221. The researchers didn’t see any changes in participants’ lung function at first. “But then, in the next year or so, they started to see that lung function had declined,” Dr. Montrose said.

Research also suggests that these effects could be cumulative, meaning that your risk can increase over time as you face more exposure. People who are frequently exposed to high levels of smoke, like some firefighters, can develop serious problems. Their lung function can decline , and they can develop higher levels of inflammation . They may also have an increased risk of lung cancer .

Researchers don’t have the data to determine whether it is more harmful to experience high levels of smoke for a short period or low levels for a long period, but they are sure of this: As the number of smoky days in the United States increases, many Americans will be at elevated risk as smoke affects them year after year.

“There’s been a shift from looking at kind of daily and weekly level exposures to looking at annual or multiyear exposure, since there are now chronically exposed communities,” said Stephanie Cleland, an environmental health scientist and assistant professor at Simon Fraser University.

How to Protect Yourself

If smoke is in the air, try to stay indoors with your windows shut, she said, especially if you have a chronic condition that puts you at higher risk . Dr. Gould recommended using an air purifier indoors if possible. (You can make one by taping a furnace filter over a box fan .)

It is not always possible to avoid going outside on smoky days. If you must, avoid strenuous exercise and wear an N95 mask.

There aren’t clear answers on when, exactly, you should avoid smoke exposure outdoors, but public health officials often issue health warnings when the A.Q.I. is over 100.

Dr. Cleland recommended that people check air-quality reports during summer and fall, the same way they might check the weather. “People tend to react if they can see, smell or feel smoke,” she said, “but health impacts happen before it reaches that level.”

Prioritize safety.

While riding an electric scooter, Chinmay Malaviya, CEO of Ridepanda, says it’s essential to gear up for safety, especially when sharing the road with other vehicles. “ Helmets dramatically reduce the likelihood of head injuries in the event of a fall or accident,” he says. While e-scooters offer plenty of zip, Malaviya emphasizes that being in a hurry can lead to unsafe riding situations. “You’re likely going to get to your destination faster on a scooter than in a car, even when taking your time,” he notes. 

Different scooter models also offer varying safety features. Headlights and taillights are critical for visibility — both in front of you and to other motorists. Some electric scooters also include turn signals for added safety. Before hitting the road, make sure you’re comfortable with the scooter’s safety features, as well as the acceleration and braking system. 

Consider your needs and travel habits

Where you live and the frequency in which you plan on riding are important considerations when shopping for an electric scooter. For daily riding or regular commuting, you might benefit from a scooter with a portable design and sufficient battery life to cover the miles you’d rack up in a typical day. 

Urban dwellers may prefer a model with turn signals to safely navigate traffic and a folding for compact storage. The following documents (if applicable) must be uploaded onto the online CUA Application and Reporting System:

• Required for all CUA applicants.
• Required for Backcountry Hiking, Bicycle Tours, and Tuweep Tours
• Note: The holder is not permitted to require clients sign a waiver of liability statement or form, insurance disclaimer, and/or indemnification agreement waiving the client’s right to hold the CUA holder responsible for accidents or injury occurring on NPS property.

Commercial General Liability (CGL) Insurance

Liability insurance is required for all CUA holders under the terms of the authorization. Such insurance should be of sufficient scope to cover all potential risks and in an amount to cover claims that can reasonably be expected in the event of serious injury or death. The minimum commercial general liability insurance is $1,000,000 per occurrence. Liability insurance policies must name the United States of America as additional insured. The business or person that is providing the service must be the named insured (policy holder). NOTE: Companies that provide transportation only are not required to have Commercial General Liability as long as the passengers do not disembark.

Commercial Auto Liability Insurance

Commercial Auto Liability Insurance is required if a CUA holder transports passengers or uses owned/leased/rented vehicles in the performance of the service in the park. NOTE: If a CUA holder charters the vehicle and those chartered vehicles are owned and operated by another company, the CUA holder is not required to have Commercial Automobile Liability insurance . If the CUA applicant or holder will use rented or leased vehicles in performance of the authorized service, the applicant or holder must secure appropriate insurance for that rented or leased vehicle in the amount required by the CUA application. Proof of insurance secured directly from the rental or lease company may not be available upon application submission, but applicants are required to provide proof of insurance coverage after application submission upon NPS request. The minimum Commercial Auto Liability Insurance for interstate passenger transport is:

36 CFR 5.4(a) :

“The commercial transportation of passengers by motor vehicles except as authorized under a contract or permit from the Secretary or his authorized representative is prohibited in…, Grand Canyon (prohibition does not apply to the north rim or to nonscheduled tours as defined in § 7.4 of this chapter ) , …”

36 CFR 7.4(a) :

"The prohibition against the commercial transportation of passengers by motor vehicles to Grand Canyon National Park contained in § 5.4 of this chapter shall be subject to the following exception: Motor vehicles operated on a general , infrequent , and nonscheduled tour on which the visit to the park is an incident to such tour, carrying only round-trip passengers traveling from the point of origin of the tour, will be accorded admission to the park.”

Who Needs a Road Based Commercial Tour CUA?

The responsibility for obtaining a RBCT CUA will ultimately fall on the business entity that assumes the responsibility and liability of the clients travelling in the park. This entity is most commonly the tour company who accompanies paying clients to the NPS unit(s). It may also be the tour packager who develops and packages the RBCT and sells the RBCT to a third-party (e.g., international tour operator), but does not accompany the clients to the NPS unit(s). In this case, the RBCT CUA conditions require the CUA holder (the tour packager) to assume responsibility for the third-party while that third-party is operating in the NPS unit(s) under the RBCT CUA. Motorcoach operators who are providing chartered transportation services only are not required to apply for and secure a RBCT CUA, as it is the responsibility of the tour provider to obtain the RBCT CUA.  RBCT CUAs provide for the use of owned, rented, leased, or chartered motorcoaches. In some cases, however, parks may require motorcoach operators providing transportation services only and not working under a tour provider’s RBCT CUA, to secure a Transportation CUA in order to avoid unacceptable impacts resulting from motorcoach operations. Parks will not require a RBCT CUA and a Transportation CUA for a single trip. However, if a single operator is providing transportation and RBCT services on different trips, they may be required to have both a Transportation and RBCT CUA.

Who Needs a Transport (Non-Tour) CUA?

Transport (non-tour) cua is required:.

Transport (non-tour) companies provide frequent and scheduled service to and from the park, such as shuttle services; and/or,

Transport (non-tour) companies provide shuttle services within the park (such as rim-to-rim shuttles) to drop off and pick up passengers at trailheads, parking areas, pullouts, and developed areas.

Transport (non-tour) CUA is NOT required:

The transport (non-tour) company is hired/contracted/chartered by a Road Based Commercial Tours CUA holder for transportation charter services.  In this case the transport (non-tour) company is covered under the RBCT’s CUA.

The transport (non-tour) company meets the criteria exempting commercial passenger-carrying motor vehicles from requiring a CUA under 36 CFR 5.4(a)  and 36 CFR 7.4(a)

North Rim: Transportation company is only providing transportation and only operating at the north rim under 36 CFR 5.4(a) .

Uber/Lyft/taxis, motorcoach charter companies, and other similar services. (meet the criteria for general, infrequent, and nonscheduled under 36 CFR 7.4(a) ).

Transportation is not commercial under 36 CFR 5.4(a)(5) . Transportation company has been hired by a non-commercial group (church group, summer camp, school/university, family reunion, scout troop) because the group is too large for their own vehicle, or they do not own a vehicle.
