Cruise ship restaurant nirvana: The 10 best meals you can have at sea

Gene Sloan

When it comes to onboard restaurants and dining, cruise ships often get a bad rap. There's a storyline out there that cruises are little more than gorge fests, prioritizing quantity over quality.

After writing about cruising for nearly 30 years, I can tell you this is far from the truth. Quality dining has always been a big part of the cruising experience, and cruise ship restaurant offerings only have improved over the years.

You'll now find stand-alone restaurants on high-end cruise ships created and overseen by some of the world's most famous chefs, including Nobu Matsuhisa, Alain Ducasse and Jacques Pepin.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

But even on the largest mass-market cruise ships, the food is getting ever more elaborate and diverse. Norwegian Cruise Line brags that its biggest vessel, Norwegian Encore , has more than 20 different food venues — everything from a casual barbecue restaurant (with live country music) to a high-end Italian spot from the creators of New York City's Scarpetta.

Some mainstream lines, such as Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises , even have called in chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants to help them design entire culinary programs.

Over the years, as part of testing and reviewing nearly 200 vessels operated by 41 different lines, I've eaten at pretty much every cruise ship restaurant.

Just like at resorts on land, there's incredible diversity out there. Some are great. Some aren't. Some are too pricey for what they are. Others are bargains.

But the bottom line is there are a lot of wonderful restaurants on cruise ships. Below are my picks for the very best cruise ship restaurants at sea. As you might expect, many of my favorites are on higher-end ships, but several of the top restaurants can be found on the bigger, more affordable cruise ships.

Manfredi's

Where you'll find it: All Viking ocean and expedition ships

silversea cruises restaurants

Found on every Viking ocean and expedition ship, Manfredi's is our hands-down pick for the best Italian restaurant at sea. It serves up authentic and hearty Tuscan and Northern Italian specialties such as bistecca fiorentina and osso buco alla Milanese. Appetizers range from hand-cut beef tartare to — our favorite — a chilled asparagus and polenta dish that's served with a perfectly poached egg, Parmigiano Reggiano and truffle dressing.

Here's a bit of trivia: Manfredi's was named after Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, who once owned one of Viking's rivals, Silversea Cruises , and now owns the recently relaunched luxury line Crystal . Viking chairman Torstein Hagen and Lefebvre are friends. If you're a cruising aficionado, be sure to hunt among the photos on the wall for the images of Lefebvre and Hagen experimenting with recipes during the restaurant's creation. The Italy-born Lefebvre supposedly shared some of his favorite childhood recipes for the venue.

Cost: There's no extra charge to dine at Manfredi's, but reservations are required. Passengers are entitled to one visit per voyage (those staying in higher cabin categories receive up to four priority reservations).

Umi Uma by Nobu Matsuhisa Restaurant and Sushi Bar

Where you'll find it: Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony

silversea cruises restaurants

When it comes to sushi at sea, the gold standard for years has been Umi Uma by Nobu Matsuhisa Restaurant and Sushi Bar. Found on both of Crystal's ships, the venue is the creation of famed Japanese chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa — yes, that Nobuyuki Matsuhisa — and offers sushi as well as Matsuhisa's trademark Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine. We're talking dishes like Nobu-style lobster with truffle-yuzu sauce and miso-glazed black cod.

If you've been to Matsuhisa's Nobu restaurants in New York, Las Vegas or other cities, you know what we're talking about. This is Japanese cuisine transformed into high art. On the two Crystal ships, it's also one of the best deals on sushi anywhere.

While it's easy to rack up a $150 per person bill at a Nobu on land (a single piece of toro sushi costs $17 at Nobu New York Fifty Seven), a night at Umi Uma on a Crystal ship is included in the fare. That fare, of course, isn't insignificant. Crystal voyages can run as much as $1,000 per person, per day.

Cost: There is no extra charge to dine at Umi Uma. Passengers are entitled to one visit per voyage, with reservations required. Additional reservations may be requested on a space-available basis for a $50 per person reservation fee.

Where you'll find it: Oceania Cruises' Marina, Riviera, Sirena and Vista

silversea cruises restaurants

Red Ginger might be the most gorgeous restaurant you'll ever see on a cruise ship. With a nod to feng shui, it radiates harmony and tranquility with ebony woods, a soothing waterfall wall and striking, modern Asian artworks. But it's not just a pretty place: It's a den of yumminess, too.

Found on four Oceania Cruises ships — Marina, Riviera, Sirena and Vista — Red Ginger offers classic Asian dishes with a contemporary twist, all dreamed up by Oceania's well-regarded, in-house culinary team with input from famed chef Jacques Pepin. We're talking about miso-glazed sea bass wrapped in a hoba leaf, and sole tempura with an orange ponzu sauce and spicy daikon. For dessert, don't miss the lemongrass creme brulee.

Cost: There is no extra charge to dine at Red Ginger, but reservations are required. Passengers are entitled to one visit per voyage (those staying in top suites can go twice).

Fahrenheit 555

Where you'll find it: Carnival's Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Venezia, Carnival Breeze, Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Radiance, Carnival Luminosa, Carnival Jubilee (debuting in December) and Carnival Firenze (debuting in April)

silversea cruises restaurants

One of the great paradoxes of the cruise world is that one of the lowest-cost operators — Carnival Cruise Line — has one of the best steakhouses at sea . At a fixed price of $48 per person, Fahrenheit 555 is also a relative bargain compared to similar steakhouses on land.

Found on Carnival's six most recently built ships plus a few others, Fahrenheit 555 offers all the steakhouse staples, from a 14-ounce New York strip to a nine-ounce filet mignon (both USDA Prime, aged 28 days). Other entree choices include an appropriately marbled hunk of Australian Wagyu beef, grilled lamb chops and Dover sole. Starters include Heritage Berkshire pork belly, bone marrow and hand-cut beef tartare, and — of course — jumbo shrimp cocktail.

Carnival has a long tradition of offering high-end steakhouses on its ships. The line began rolling out steakhouses in 2001 with the debut of its Spirit Class ships (where, in one of the great quirks of cruise ship design, the steakhouses are located in red domes that form the forward portions of the ships' funnels).

There now are steakhouses on 23 of Carnival's 25 vessels, with varying names and decor (only Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise lack one). When it comes to culinary offerings, they're all similar to Fahrenheit 555.

Cost: $48 per person

Where you'll find it: Le Commandant Charcot

silversea cruises restaurants

The newest temple to gastromy at sea is Nuna on Ponant's epic new icebreaking expedition ship, Le Commandant Charcot . Elegant and refined, it's a high-end French restaurant that serves dishes designed by Alain Ducasse, the famed French chef.

You'll find everything from French-style beef fillet served with a pepper sauce and veal tenderloin with a vegetable matignon and potato cake to monkfish medallions on the menu, with some international dishes mixed in with the classic French cuisine. Dessert options include a selection of French cheeses that number into the dozens — perhaps the most spectacular cheese selection found on any cruise vessel.

The setting itself is lovely, at the back of the vessel overlooking the wake and featuring furniture from iconic French furniture design house Ligne Roset, Bernardaud French china and glassware by Elne.

Cost: There is no charge to dine at Nuna

Where you'll find it: All Silversea ships except Silver Origin

silversea cruises restaurants

The premier restaurant on Silversea Cruises ships is a temple to high-end French cuisine. Named after La Dame de Paris, aka the Eiffel Tower, it serves such classic dishes as filet of Limousin beef, grilled rack of lamb and pan-fried Dover sole. The menu includes two different styles of foie gras, as well as caviar.

As you might expect for a fancy French venue, the service is all white-glove elegance in a refined but contemporary setting. As you might not expect on an upscale all-inclusive cruise line, the restaurant does have a hefty cover charge.

Cost: $60 per person for all ships, with the exception of the new Silver Nova . The cover charge for La Dame on Silver Nova, where the experience includes an exclusive selection of French wines and digestives, is $160 per person.

Pacific Rim

Where you'll find it: Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Seven Seas Explorer, Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Grandeur

silversea cruises restaurants

Another one of my favorite cruise ship restaurants is Pacific Rim, found on the two largest Regent Seven Seas Cruises vessels. Serving pan-Asian cuisine, it's elegant and upscale — as you would expect from one of the world's leading luxury lines — and has a mouthwatering menu.

Signature dishes include grilled Korean barbecue lamb chops (served with wok-fried Brussels sprouts and gochujang sauce) and a miso black cod wrapped in a hoba leaf. Signature appetizers include a crispy soft-shell crab served with a kizami wasabi mayo.

For dessert, don't miss the chili chocolate mousse. True to its name, it's infused with chile and wonderfully spicy. For something more neutral, my pick is the green tea panna cotta, served with mango and a lychee ragout.

Cost: There's no extra charge to dine at Pacific Rim, but reservations are required.

Eden Restaurant

Where you'll find it: Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent

silversea cruises restaurants

Celebrity Cruises has created a temple to gastronomy with Eden Restaurant, found on its new Edge Class ships . Located at the back of each vessel in a whimsical glass-walled and plant-filled dining and entertainment space called Eden, it offers a fixed-price menu with a wide range of choices for appetizers, three entrees and two desserts.

In a sharp departure from Eden Restaurant's original concept of mesmerizingly imaginative dishes with fanciful names and often exotic ingredients, the menu now offers such classic dishes as filet mignon and mini short rib Wellington with mashed potatoes, vegetables, mushrooms and bordelaise sauce, and slow-cooked corvina — all cooked perfectly.

In addition to the regular menu, Eden offers two seven-course tasting menus — one with some dishes derived from animals and one that is completely vegan.

Cost: $65 for the basic menu; the tasting menus cost $100.

Where you'll find it: Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy

silversea cruises restaurants

For the most part, the food on Disney Cruise Line ships is just so-so (in my opinion, at least). It's a line you book for its great family entertainment, not cuisine. But Remy is the great exception — a dining experience that is among the finest at sea.

Created by two renowned chefs (Arnaud Lallement of France's three-Michelin-starred l'Assiette Champenoise and Scott Hunnel of Disney World's high-end Victoria & Albert's), it offers exquisitely presented, French-inspired cuisine of the highest quality in an elegant setting at one of the highest prices of any cruise ship eatery.

Like pretty much all venues on Disney ships, Remy has some whimsical Disney touches. Named after the rat hero in the Disney animated film "Ratatouille," it has his stylized likeness worked into the art nouveau design.

But there's nothing Mickey Mouse about the restaurant's sophisticated decor and finishings, which include high-end Frette linens, Riedel glassware, Christofle silverware and gold-cushioned stools to hold ladies' purses. This is a fine dining establishment where you wear a jacket or cocktail dress to dinner while savoring mouth-watering small plates of duck, quail, Wagyu beef, king crab and the like.

Cost: $135 per person for dinner, not including wine. A brunch service is also available for $80 per person, and a dessert offering is $65 per person.

Steakhouse at the Verandah

Where you'll find it: All Cunard ships

silversea cruises restaurants

Steakhouse lovers will find another great option in Steakhouse at The Verandah, located on all Cunard vessels. It's a shrine to the most indulgent, marbled and mouth-watering cuts of beef, from 35-day dry-aged Scotch grass-fed Black Angus to Australian grass-fed Wagyu beef (the latter for a $30 upcharge). It also serves seafood options such as grilled whole Dover sole and Maine lobster. Appetizers include clam chowder and lobster cocktail.

At a price of just $45 per person if booked in advance of sailing (with a few supplemental charges for premium items), it's a great bargain in my book — at least compared to fine steakhouses on land.

Cost: $45 per person if booked in advance of sailing; $50 per person if booked on board. A few premium dinner items come with extra "supplemental" charges. The steakhouse is also open for lunch for $25 per person if booked in advance and $30 per person if booked on board.

Bottom line

Good food is plentiful on cruise ships, where you will find a few truly world-class restaurants. Some of the same chefs behind the best-known restaurants on land have turned their attention to restaurants at sea in recent years, making it easier than ever to have a knockout meal during your cruise.

Silversea unveils 8 signature restaurants for silver nova.

Silversea Cruises has unveiled eight signature restaurants for its new ship Silver Nova. The restaurants represent the latest iteration of Silversea’s unique take on luxury.

From spacious, open-seated venues to more intimate dining options,  Silver Nova ’s diverse range of restaurants will serve a selection of cuisines throughout the day, from international to speciality fare. Diners will benefit from a greater sense of space and stronger connections with the destination, as each restaurant will incorporate all-new design features, facilitated by Silver Nova’s innovative asymmetrical design. Silver Nova is scheduled to launch in 2023 as the first cruise ship to be free of local emissions while at port, paving the way for the future of luxurious, sustainable cruise travel.

“Characteristic of Silver Nova, which will push boundaries in cruising, the dining experience aboard our newest ship will represent the latest iteration of Silversea’s unique take on luxury,” said Barbara Muckermann , Chief Commercial Officer, Silversea Cruises. “From S.A.L.T. Kitchen to The Marquee on deck 10, each of Silver Nova’s restaurants will benefit from innovative design solutions that will bring the destination into view like never before. Food and drink has long been core to the cruise experience for our guests; with Silver Nova, we are enriching Silversea’s trademark dining experiences, which are among the finest at sea.”

With both formal and informal options, decks three, four, and five will accommodate Silver Nova’s indoor restaurants, while The Marquee on deck 10 will house her two outdoor dining options, Spaccanapoli and The Grill.

Silver Nova’s eight restaurants

LA TERRAZZA – capacity: 340

The largest of Silver Nova’s restaurants with a capacity of 340, the 359m2 La Terrazza will comprise both indoor and outdoor spaces on deck four, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner with open seating. Reimagined with a brand new aesthetic that incorporates a vibrant colour palette, La Terrazza will offer one of the most immersive destination experiences aboard Silver Nova, with floor-to-ceiling windows providing views to the horizon and an expansive terrace for up to 90 diners. The venue will feature a large buffet area during the day, while decorative, fluted glass screens will enclose the space during dinner. Silver Nova’s asymmetrical design has enabled the creation of a new shape for La Terrazza: the venue will have a curved layout on the port side, while running to the ship’s aft on the starboard side.

ATLANTIDE – capacity: 270

At 546m2, Atlantide will be the most spacious of Silver Nova’s restaurants, accommodating 270 guests for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on deck three. A new layout and an enriched design will enhance guests’ dining experience, yet the restaurant’s iconic warm tones will maintain its signature aesthetic. Modern architectural details and materials will elevate the space’s luxuriousness, with fluted glass, metal trim, and natural stone flooring accentuating the design. Atlantide’s sophisticated lighting will include an elegant chandelier.

S.A.L.T. KITCHEN – capacity: 160

When S.A.L.T. Kitchen launched aboard Silver Moon, it became the first large-scale regional restaurant at sea. Aboard Silver Nova, the innovative venue will take on a new look and feel on deck three, with a capacity of 160 and a floor-space of 315m2, accommodating larger groups for a more social experience. High ceilings and vast windows will create a sense of openness, bringing the destination into view with ample natural light. Artworks that reflect the world’s richest culinary traditions will adorn the venue’s interiors. True to its concept, S.A.L.T. Kitchen will offer a menu inspired by each destination, from the Terrain menu, which adapts according to the port of call, to the Voyage menu, which comprises the best recipes of each voyage.

LA DAME – capacity: 70

The 191m2 La Dame, Silversea’s signature French restaurant, will host 70 guests in an elegant, formal setting on deck four. Structural design details will enhance the guest experience, from the open entranceway to the high ceilings and sizeable windows, which will offer sweeping views on the destination from every seat in the restaurant. Creative ceiling lighting will emphasise La Dame’s contrasting colour palette of bright and dark tones, while hand-made Lalique crystal panels, including the bespoke Masque de Femme design, and a Hirondelles crystal chandelier will greet guests upon arrival.

SILVER NOTE – capacity: 54

Inspired by jazz clubs of the 1920s, the 141m2 Silver Note will welcome up to 54 guests for dinner each night, with the venue benefitting from a new design and layout. Perfect for an atmospheric meal or a post-dinner cocktail, the intimate setting on deck five will employ a dark colour palette with gold metal and velvet accents. Feature lighting installations on the ceiling and a wrap-around wall will place focus on a central stage, which will host a piano for live musical performances. Silver Note’s elegant bar will also be enhanced aboard Silver Nova, with a fresh design and plenty of seating for guests.

KAISEKI – capacity: 40

Broadening Silver Nova’s offering of international fare, the 86m2 Kaiseki will serve the finest Asian cuisine in a minimalist, Japanese-inspired setting on deck four, accommodating 40 guests in a tranquil environment. A new set of modern design features will enrich the space, from the restaurant’s entrance, which will act as a symbolic gateway to Japan, to its decoration, which will incorporate authentic washi paper, marble, and traditional wooden materials. Elegant lighting will create a cosy, inviting atmosphere for optimum intimacy. Primarily serving Japanese fare, Kaiseki will also offer guests the chance to sample fine Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, Korean, and Chinese cuisine from an a-la-carte menu.

THE MARQUEE (THE GRILL & SPACCANAPOLI) – capacity: 220

Silver Nova’s asymmetrical design has enabled the introduction of The Marquee on deck 10, a new food and drinks venue with far-reaching views, occupying 477m2 towards the ship’s aft, on the port side. The al fresco dining venue will welcome up to 220 guests, incorporating The Grill and Spaccanapoli, two of Silversea’s signature venues, which offer guests the cruise line’s trademark ‘hot rocks’ culinary concept and arguably the best pizza at sea, respectively. Due to its proximity to the swimming pool, The Marquee will welcome guests in a relaxed atmosphere, serving casual fare by day and offering dinner under the stars by night.

In addition to eight restaurants, Silver Nova will host up to 70 guests in the vibrant Arts Café , a welcoming space in which to enjoy snacks and refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere. Relocated to the centre of the ship, the 106m2 Arts Café will benefit from ample natural light thanks to a double-height, glazed atrium.

As is customary on Silversea’s ships, travellers will also enjoy complimentary in-suite dining around the clock, enhanced by the Otium dining menu, which will include snacks made from the most luxurious ingredients, from lobster and caviar in brioche rolls to a range of gourmet popcorn.

Silver Nova will be one of the most spacious cruise ships ever built, with a space-to-guest ratio of 75 GRT-per-passenger, the highest in Silversea’s fleet. She will offer one of the most personalised services at sea with a 1:1.3 crew-to-guest ratio, as well as butler services for all suites. The ship will have a capacity of 728 and a gross tonnage of 54,700 tons. With her hybrid power sources, Silver Nova is expected to achieve a cruise industry-first: local emission-free operation in port by using fuel cells and batteries.

Barbara Muckermann, Chief Commercial Officer, Silversea Cruises commented: “Characteristic of Silver Nova , which will push boundaries in cruising, the dining experience aboard our newest ship will represent the latest iteration of Silversea’s unique take on luxury. From S.A.L.T. Kitchen – the first large-scale regional restaurant at sea – to The Marquee on deck 10, each of Silver Nova ’s restaurants will benefit from innovative design solutions that will bring the destination into view like never before.

“Food and drink has long been core to the cruise experience for our guests; with Silver Nova , we are enriching Silversea’s trademark dining experiences – which are among the finest at sea,” Muckermann said.

With both formal and informal options, decks three, four, and five will accommodate Silver Nova ’s indoor restaurants, while The Marquee on deck 10 will house her two outdoor dining options, Spaccanapoli and The Grill.

Silver Nova ’s eight restaurants will include:

LA TERRAZZA – capacity: 340

silversea cruises restaurants

ATLANTIDE – capacity: 270

silversea cruises restaurants

At 546m2, Atlantide will be the most spacious of Silver Nova’s restaurants, accommodating 270 guests for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on deck three. A new layout and an enriched design will enhance guests’ dining experience, yet the restaurant’s iconic warm tones will maintain its signature aesthetic. Modern architectural details and materials will elevate the space’s luxuriousness, with fluted glass, metal trim, and natural stone flooring accentuating the design. Atlantide’s sophisticated lighting will include an elegant chandelier.

S.A.L.T. KITCHEN – capacity: 160

silversea cruises restaurants

When S.A.L.T. Kitchen launched aboard Silver Moon , it became the first large-scale regional restaurant at sea. Aboard Silver Nova , the innovative venue will take on a new look and feel on deck three, with a capacity of 160 and a floor-space of 315 square-metre, accommodating larger groups for a more social experience.

LA DAME ® – capacity: 70

silversea cruises restaurants

The 191-square-metre La Dame – Silversea’s signature French restaurant – will host 70 guests in an elegant, formal setting on deck four. Structural design details will enhance the guest experience, from the open entranceway to the high ceilings and sizeable windows, which will offer sweeping views on the destination from every seat in the restaurant. Creative ceiling lighting will emphasise La Dame’s contrasting colour palette of bright and dark tones, while hand-made Lalique crystal panels—including the bespoke Masque de Femme design—and a Hirondelles crystal chandelier will greet guests upon arrival.

SILVER NOTE ® – capacity: 54

silversea cruises restaurants

Inspired by jazz clubs of the 1920s, the 141 sqm Silver Note will welcome up to 54 guests for dinner each night, with the venue benefitting from a new design and layout. Silver Note’s elegant bar will also be enhanced aboard Silver Nova , with a fresh design and plenty of seating for guests.

KAISEKI ® – capacity: 40

silversea cruises restaurants

Broadening Silver Nova ’s offering of international fare, the 86 sqm Kaiseki will serve the finest Asian cuisine in a minimalist, Japanese-inspired setting on deck four, accommodating 40 guests in a tranquil environment.

Silver Nova ’s asymmetrical design has enabled the introduction of The Marquee on deck 10 – a new food and drinks venue with far-reaching views, occupying 477 sqm towards the ship’s aft, on the port side. The al fresco dining venue will welcome up to 220 guests, incorporating The Grill and Spaccanapoli – two of Silversea’s signature venues, which offer guests the cruise line’s trademark ‘hot rocks’ culinary concept and arguably the best pizza at sea, respectively. Due to its proximity to the swimming pool, The Marquee will welcome guests in a relaxed atmosphere, serving casual fare by day and offering dinner under the stars by night.

In addition to eight restaurants, Silver Nova will host up to 70 guests in the vibrant Arts Café – a welcoming space in which to enjoy snacks and refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere. Relocated to the centre of the ship, the 106 sqm Arts Café will benefit from ample natural light thanks to a double-height, glazed atrium.

As is customary on Silversea’s ships, travellers will also enjoy complimentary in-suite dining around the clock – enhanced by the Otium® dining menu, which will include snacks made from the most luxurious ingredients, from lobster and caviar in brioche rolls to a range of gourmet popcorn.

Silver Nova will be one of the most spacious cruise ships ever built, with a space-to-guest ratio of 75 GRT-per-passenger – the highest in Silversea’s fleet. Silver Muse Restaurants

The Silver Muse restaurants are a foodies delight. In fact there are more restaurants on this luxury cruise ship than any other.

In this review

  • Dining ratings
  • La Terrazza – one of the best Silver Muse restaurants
  • Silver Note
  • Spaccanapoli

Silver Muse has an astounding variety of restaurants. However, it’s worth noting there is no main dining room. Rather, there are eight unique restaurants to choose from, including two speciality dining venues:

  • La Terrazza
  • As well as, the Grill

La Dame is one of the best fine-dining restaurants at sea and also one of two specialty Silver Muse restaurants. It is an intimate venue serving mouthwatering French cuisine, as well as exceptional wines.

The menu reflects the best of haute cuisine.  Indeed, the chefs from Relais & Chateaux® created every dish.

In fact the only problem is choosing what to eat, but thankfully a welcome glass of Pommery Champagne makes the decision easier.

Starters include delicacies like Foie Gras and Scallops, as well as delicious Escargots. While for mains there are treats like Dover Sole, Glazed Perigord Duck Breast and Rack of Lamb.

La Dame’s signature caviar is also excellent and served in a quirky, glass hen egg. The Mushroom Veloute soup was heavenly and the Lobster Tail with Leeks in Green Pea Jus was also great. In fact, it made a refreshing change from the ubiquitous Lobster Thermidor served on other cruise ships. Not surprisingly the dessert soufflé is the most popular dish.

Because La Dame is the smallest of the Silver Muse restaurants (only about 12 tables) there are two sittings each night – one at 6:00pm and another at 9:00pm. Of course, if you like to attend the nightly performances in the Venetian Lounge I recommend the early sitting.

Also, there are a few other things worth mentioning about La Dame. You can purchase vintage wines from the Connoisseurs list, however the house wine selection in La Dame is excellent. Indeed it’s a cut above the rest of the wines served on board. Also, the staff are happy to match house wines to your meal choices, which is a real treat.

It’s also worth noting that you order all courses at the beginning – including dessert. Also, the menu does not change often.

In addition, La Dame has a cover charge of $US60 per person.

La Dame is only open for dinner. Reservations are essential.

Kaiseki is the other specialty Silver Muse restaurant. It is a Japanese teppanyaki-style venue with seating around a chefs hotplate as well as more intimate tables for two.

The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner. At lunch time the menu has a delectable selection of perfectly prepared sashimi including tuna, salmon and sea urchin, as well as fresh sushi and nigiri.

However, in the evening Kaiseki becomes a fine-dining Japanese restaurant with a set-menu designed to take you on a gastronomic journey of discovery. Indeed, there is Wakame Seaweed Salad, Pork Belly Bonbon, Black Cod and delicious Beef Teriyaki.

I especially enjoyed the Snow Crab Delights served with Wasabi and Topiko Roe. It was a taste sensation. However, the Miso Black Cod with Fresh Ginger was the star of the menu. The flavour of the delicate fish flakes was carried along by the sweet miso glaze.

You can have wine or Japanese beer with your meal in Kaiseki, but I recommend trying Saki (Japanese rice wine). It can be served either hot or cold and has a similar alcohol content to wine. It is a perfect accompaniment to a delicious Japanese meal.

I think Kaiseki is one of the most enjoyable Silver Muse restaurants. It is open nightly from 7:00pm. There is a dining suppliment of US$40 per person. Reservations are required.

Silver Muse breaks with tradition in that it does not have a main restaurant, however guests seem to have adopted Atlantide as their new main dining room. In fact it’s the place to be on formal nights when a special menu is on offer.

Indeed, Atlantide looks like a grand dining room. There are high back velvet chairs as well as sweeping architectural curves that add a sense of drama. But what really shines is the food which is fresh, innovative and always beautifully presented.

The menu is mostly European and it changes every three days. However there are some dishes that are almost always available, like the Signature Lobster Salad with Zucchini, Beetroot and Sprouts. Caviar is also available at no additional cost.

When I sailed on Silver Muse the Leek, Potato & Truffle Veloute in Atlantide was exceptional. In fact it was one of the best dishes I tasted. The grilled New Zealand lamb – served medium-rare – was also delicious and so too was the Italian Veal Chop.

Atlantide is the largest Silver Muse restaurants and there is seating for groups of up to twelve as well as couples. However, if you’d like a romantic table in a quiet corner simply let the maître d know.

The wines in Atlantide are great and include both new and old-world varieties. Also, the sommelier is happy to accommodate special requests.

Atlantide is open nightly from 7:00pm and you do not need to make a reservation, however they are recommended. It’s worth remembering that the last order is taken at 9:30pm.

Indochine is an entirely new restaurant concept for Silversea. The style is called ‘pan-Asian’ and so there are dishes from as far afield as India, Thailand, China and Indonesia.

Indeed, the menu is based on the travels of Marco Polo and more precisely the spices he introduced to the West.

The restaurant has a modern Japanese decor and there is seating for couples and small groups, as well as one long communal table!

The Indochine menu has some delightful highlights. As a matter of fact, I really enjoyed the Chinese Hot & Sour Soup based on a vegetable stock with Vinegar, Chilli, Soya and Ginger. The flavours were exquisitely balanced and the spice had just the right amount of kick. Also, the Indonesian Gado Gado Salad was authentic and the Tuna Nikkei with its Rice Wine Vinegar and Radishes was wonderfully refreshing.

There are also some innovative desserts in Indochine, including “Victoria” Pineapple Cake & Passionfruit Ice Cream as well as Ginger & Kaffir Lime Creme Brûlée. Indochines Coconut Rice Pudding is also very good.

Indochine serve an excellent range of beers from across Asia. They work well with the spicy food, but wines are also available if you prefer.

In most parts of Asia meals are best shared, so I recommend doing the same at Indochine. It also allows you to sample more spices and flavours from each region.

Indochine is opened from 7:00pm. Reservations are recommended for Indochine.

La Terrazza – one of the best Silver Muse restaurants

La Terrazza restaurant is a Silversea classic. In fact it pays homage to the ultra-luxury cruise line’s Italian heritage, serving some of the best Italian cuisine on land or sea. This is especially so on Silver Muse.

La Terrazza is on deck 8 at the stern and as the name implies it has a magnificent terrace for enjoying sunsets and gentle evening breezes while you dine.

La Terrazza embraces the ‘slow food’ movement. In other words, the Italian concept of lingering over enjoyable meals. Indeed, the five course dinner menu at La Terrazza is perfect for this.

It begins with an antipasti plate including 26-month aged Reggiano as well as Wild Boar Salami, Seabass Carpaccio and other morish bites. Next, there is a light Capresse Salad with Buffalo Mozzarella, an excellent Beef Carpaccio or a zesty Octopus Salad – the choice is yours.

But what ever you do, don’t skip the pasta course! I’m fortunate enough to have eaten my way through pasta dishes up and down the length of Italy, but none have impressed like the pasta in La Terrazza.

In fact in La Terrazza the pasta is made fresh every day and there are ten different pasta dishes to choose from, including Papardelle with duck breast ragu, Gnocchi with fresh sage and Lasagne. I had the Pansotti in Salsa di Noci (a traditional walnut sauce) which was sublime.

La Terrazza also have a great selection of soups. Indeed the vegetable broth with cabbage and white beans was like Tuscany in a bowl.

Main course is a carnivalé of Italian classics. There is Veal Ossobuco, Mediterranean-style tuna with cherry tomatoes and capers, as well as grilled Seabass. Plus there is also an excellent vegetarian selection including Polenta with Truffles and a wonderful Asparagus Frittata.

Desserts are a delight. Tiramisu, Pana Cotta and Lemon Sponge Cake are all on the menu, but I rate the Cassata most highly – a sweet ricotta cake punctuated with little candied fruit explosions.

The wines served in La Terrazza form part of a special Italian collection, but most importantly they compliment the dishes very well and you can switch between white and red as you please.

La Terrazza is one of my favourite Silver Muse restaurants. It is open for dinner from 7:00pm daily. You will need to make a reservation, but there is no extra charge. The venue also serves a buffet breakfast and lunch.

Silver Note on Silver Muse is a jazz supper club. It serves a late night menu in a cabaret setting with the smooth sounds of jazz and blues.

The concept is unique to Silversea and it has real panache. In fact Silver Note evolved out of the popular Stars Supper Club which used to be on Silver Spirit. Back then it had a delightful dégustation menu.

In Silver Note the menu has changed. Now it offers a small-plate, tapas-style selection which I think works best when shared. There are hot and cold starters as well as larger meat and seafood dishes too. I enjoyed the Octopus with tomato salsa. The seared lamb was also tasty. However, I’m not convinced the menu works as well as the old Stars Supper Club dégustation. Also, the test tubes filled with spicy pepper sauces proved both impractical and unpopular.

However, the real star of Silver Note is the music. Indeed, when I sailed on Silver Muse Helene’s smokey vocals enthralled diners night after night. She was supported on piano by Andre whose solos were also spellbinding. Together they proved so popular that many guests would come to listen after eating in other Silver Muse restaurants!

Silver Note is a great dining alternative. It is open from 8:00pm nightly and the last sitting is 11:00pm. Seating is limited so reservations are essential. It’s also worth noting the Helene and Andre do not perform on embarkation day.

What makes pizzas taste so good in Naples, Italy? Is it because of the thin crust or maybe the tomato sauce? Now you can decide for yourself at Silvesea’s own Naples-style pizza restaurant which is called Spaccanapoli.

Traditional Naples-style pizzas are on the menu at Spaccanapoli. In fact the al fresco restaurant has it’s own pizza oven and most importantly, an Italian pizza chef.

Spaccanapoli serves Napolitan classics like Pizza Margherita and Pizza Bufalina as well as traditional favourites including Pizza Diavola with Spicy Italian Sausage and Pizza Fungha Porcini. You can order either small or large sizes – I found the small was perfect for lunch.

Spaccanapoli is open for lunch and dinner. In fact it serves pizzas until 11:00pm. The dress code is always casual, even on formal nights.

The Grill on Silver Muse is a casual poolside dining venue with great ocean views and it also enjoys a gentle sea breeze. In other words, it’s the perfect place to relax over a meal and a glass of wine.

During the day The Grill has a buffet selection which is usually themed around the cultures and cuisines of the places you visit. However there are a la cart options as well, like the Classic Silversea Burger and grilled fish of the day.

In the evening The Grill is transformed. Bathed in the light of a golden sunset it takes on a candlelit ambiance, with table service and crisp linen napkins.

A unique hot rocks dining experience awaits. As a matter of fact it is like a table side BBQ where you cook your selection on lava stones heated to 400ºC / 750ºF. There are various meats and seafood to choose from including beef, veal, swordfish and shrimp as well as a vegetarian tofu option. Zesty dipping sauces are available too.

The last sitting for dinner at The Grill is 10:00pm. You do need to make dinner reservations, but there is no additional charge. Unlike most of the other Silver Muse restaurants, the Grill dress code is always casual.

We were on Muse last year. Best ever hot and sour soup in Indochine. Friend on cruise went to a tasting with chef and got the recipe. She was going to share with us but it never happened. Would love to get it. Loved our time on the Muse. And hope to do it again. Thanks

Hello Jason, We are looking to book our first ever cruise on the Muse in 2023. Cruise departs on the 19 Oct 2023 going to China Hong Kong, India ,Singapore and Bangkok. Can you help us out with the clothes you think we should take (ages 67 and 58). Thanks Rob and Helen

Hello Rob and Helen

Thanks for your question. The first point to make is that it will be hot at that time of year in those destinations, so pack light clothing for your daytime trips ashore.

On board, during the day the attire is resort-casual (shorts, T-shirts, shirts, skirts, blouses, etc). For the evenings I always pack a suit and tie, a couple of jackets, some smart pants and collared shirts. For the ladies they should pack an evening gown as well as dresses and pantsuits.

Mix and match to help minimise your luggage.

Hope this helps

silversea cruises restaurants

Hi Jason We would love to do the cruise from Singapore to Sydney but my husband hates wearing jackets and i worry we will be confined to only eating at the casual restaurant venues. Would a collered shirt and smart pants be acceptable? Most cruise ships seem to be relaxing the formal dress code.

Thank you for your question – it’s a good one. Technically, a collared shirt and smart pants would be fine in any venue on Casual nights. However, not so on Informal or Formal nights. A jacket is requiered on both those evenings. See our Expert Guide to the Silversea Dress Code here .

Most guests on Silversea do enjoy dressing up, especially so on formal nights. In fact, I’ve seen fellow passengers complain when a jacket wasn’t worn in a dining venue. The staff discretely placed one over the back of the offending gentleman’s chair!

That said, you might find Seabourn a better fit for your husband. Most nights on Seabourn are defined as “Elegant casual”; for women that includes slacks, skirts, and blouses. Men wear slacks and a collared shirt (jacket is optional).

I hope this helps.

Regards Jason Kerr Managing Editor

We are from Singapore (hot and humid climate from far, far away… casual attire whole year round) and going on Silver Muse in Alaska in a week. Is a jacket required for gentlemen just to access public places on formal nights (given that we will dine at restaurants with a casual dress code)?

Thank you for your question. Yes, you should wear a jacket in public areas on formal night. According to the Silversea guidelines: “Following dinner, all guests are free to take advantage of any or all public spaces, however, a jacket is required”.

I hope you enjoy your cruise.

Kind regards Jason Kerr Managing Editor

13 Best Cruise Line Restaurants

C ruise ships have come a long way in terms of dining. For decades, they were often lost in a sea of stereotypes, mired in preconceived notions of gluttonous buffets, treacly piña coladas, and well-done steaks. But things have shifted dramatically of late — buffets and guilty pleasure cocktails are still abundant, but not only has the quality of said pleasures risen to new echelons, but cruise ships have become a magnet for specialty restaurants and celebrity chefs . Long gone are the days of lackluster waffles and pizza under heat lamps, and in are the days of caviar platters and $5,000 cocktails .

Like the chefs putting their names on seafaring menus nowadays, passengers see cruise ships as an opportunity to escape, indulge, and try something new. As cruise lines ramp up their amenities and itineraries to levels never seen before, from pickle-ball courts and Pride parties to ports of call in Istanbul and Oslo, the same upswing has taken foot with their restaurants, evolving from dated stereotypes to full-fledged dining destinations in and of themselves. From ritzy steakhouses to whimsical dining rooms and jazzy lounges, these are some of the best cruise line restaurants in the world.

Pinnacle Grill - Holland America Line

If ever there was a cruise line that takes dining seriously, it's Holland America Line, a longstanding company — currently celebrating its 150th year — that recently made waves with its launch of chef-driven food cruises . And if ever there was a restaurant that exemplified those notions, it's Pinnacle Grill. From filets topped with lobster dumplings to baked Alaska the size of Alaska, it ticks all the boxes for the ultimate steakhouse.

Found on numerous Holland America ships, like the Oosterdam and the Rotterdam, the ritzy steakhouse can hold its own against the finest surf & turf temples on land — thanks to its swanky and refined atmosphere coupled with its plethora of wet-aged USDA Prime steaks, meticulous presentation, and expert wine pairings. Celebrity chef David Burke helped create some of the menu items, like the "Clothesline Candied Bacon," featuring maple- and pepper-glazed bacon dangling from miniature wires, and the beef tenderloin with lobster dumplings, lobster béarnaise, celery root purée, and horseradish bordelaise. There's also an umami-rich forest mushroom soup, poured table-side from a tea kettle, sofrito-spiced Alaskan king crab legs, and the "Not-So-Classic" baked Alaska with cherry ice cream, meringue, and flaming cherries jubilee.

Wonderland - Royal Caribbean

It's whimsy and edible pageantry on the high seas at Wonderland, a fantastically themed dining room aboard globe-trotting Royal Caribbean ships like Anthem of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, and Spectrum of the Seas. As the name implies, the restaurant draws inspiration from "Alice in Wonderland" for both its soaring, kaleidoscopic decor and its playful dishes and drinks.

The whole dining experience feels more like an immersive art experience than dinner, starting with guests "brushing" the menu at the entrance of the restaurant, with a paintbrush dipped in water, revealing a slew of dishes inspired by natural elements like earth, fire, sun, ice, and sea. It's like an edible choose-your-own-adventure, with "fire" options like crispy shrimp kataifi with Scotch bonnet pepper, or "sea" plates like Branzino with tamarind emulsion. Even the kids have quirky options, with "Rabbitizers" like fruit salad with hot yogurt and maple ice cream.

Animator's Palate - Disney Cruise Line

Just as the restaurants at Disney World have become full-blown dining destinations in recent years, the same draw can be said of the company's cruise ships, replete with all manner of elaborately themed restaurants, lounges, bars, and cafes. One of the best, though, is an older standby that's remained a frontrunner amidst a sea of dazzling new additions: Animator's Palate.

Like a new kind of dinner theater, the animation-themed restaurant starts with dinner in an all-white room, with walls designed to look like blank canvases for Disney Imagineers. Throughout the evening, the walls and decor magically fill in with color, until by dessert, it's alive with classic Disney characters and settings. All the while, guests are feasting on dishes inspired by pan-Asian and Californian cuisines, like smoked salmon tartare, black bean chipotle cakes, and peanut butter mousse. It's all available aboard Disney Cruise Line vessels like the Magic, Wonder, Dream, and Fantasy.

Red Ginger - Oceania Cruises

Pan-Asian cuisine on cruise ships is nothing new — but pan-Asian cuisine at the level of Oceania Cruises; Red Ginger is a novelty worth cruising for. One of the best Asian restaurants at sea, the sleek and contemporary concept exudes luxury amidst a minimalist backdrop that looks more like a swanky art gallery than a place you'd go for tempura.

Here, contemporary plates fuse flavors from Korea, Japan, Malaysia, and beyond, starting with shareable platters of fresh sushi and skewers, along with rich tom kha gai soup redolent with coconut milk and lemongrass. The spicy duck and watermelon salad, strewn with cashews and sweet fish sauce, is far from a vegetal afterthought, followed by stunning entrees like sole tempura in orange ponzu, lobster pad Thai, and red snapper in banana leaf with Makrut lime and chili paste. Save room for sweets, like the steamed ginger cake with apple-cardamon ice cream. Red Ginger can be found on Oceania Cruises' Marina, Rivera, or Sirena.

Silver Note - Silversea

If Frank Sinatra were alive today, he'd surely be a fixture at Silver Note, a jazzy piano bar and restaurant with swanky decor and a dark interior motif that feels like a romantic lounge in New York City or Paris. Found aboard Silversea ships like the Silver Dawn, Silver Spirit, and Silver Muse, all of which are smaller vessels providing a more intimate outing, Silver Note reaches a high note in dining, drinking, and nighttime entertainment.

Bedecked with a grand piano and bluesy singers, with plenty of room for couples to dance once they've polished off their Sugar Volcano, the lounge features tapas-style plates like yellowfin tuna with green quinoa, marinated octopus with caramelized pumpkin purée, and seared lamb loin with onion risotto and lamb jus — and dish beautifully presented, and ideally followed by the aforementioned Volcano, a kind of mountainous cheesecake with chocolate and caramel.

Fahrenheit 555 - Carnival

Found aboard several Carnival Cruise Line ships, like the Breeze, Celebration, and Horizon, Fahrenheit 555 is among the swankiest steakhouse at sea. Awash in hues of brown and crimson-red, and adjoined by a huge wall of wine bottles, the dining room is stately and majestic — an optimal setting in which to enjoy decadent portions of surf & turf.

Starters include escargots, Cognac-spiked lobster bisque, and meltingly tender beef carpaccio with shaved parmesan, while salads hew classic with Caesar salad and iceberg wedges. On to the entrees, steak is the star, available in burly portions of broiled prime New York strip, grilled cowboy steak, and spice-rubbed rib-eye, while seafood shares the spotlight with lobster tail and Maine lobster ravioli. To drink, sommeliers oversee an enviable portfolio of buttery whites and robust reds, along with dessert wine and digestifs — both of which pair nicely with chocolate samplers and cheesecake with hazelnut biscotti.

Cuadro 44 By Anthony Sasso - Windstar Cruises

A newer addition to Windstar Cruises' increasingly alluring dining options, Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso showcases the contemporary Spanish stylings of a Michelin-starred chef. Found aboard the boutique lines' Star Class ships, which include Star Breeze and Star Legend, the intimate and art-filled restaurant zigs where many cruise ship restaurants zag, emphasizing small plates and open kitchen cookery.

With only 38 seats, a far cry from standard super-sized cruise ship dining rooms, Cuadro 44 offers a more curated and quaint dining experience, complete with a communal table and chef's counter. From here, guests can savor authentic tapas like Spanish tortillas, paella croquetas, and charred octopus with pimentón and pickled celery. There are also a few entrées, like pork belly with romesco and jamón bacon bits, or toasted angel hair pasta with confit chicken and chorizo, and worthy desserts like churros with salted tamarind hot chocolate.

The Grill By Thomas Keller - Seabourn

Boutique cruise line Seabourn went big when it came to taking a chef-driven approach to its dining offerings. And by "big," we mean Thomas Keller, a Michelin-starred icon and one of the most lauded chefs in the U.S. Found aboard the posh Encore ship, The Grill by Thomas Keller is an opulent ode to Americana, spotlighting surf & turf — and everything in between — in a lavish style befitting its gilded dining room.

Here, guests can indulge in fine dining on the high seas, starting with table-side Caesar salads and steamed artichokes with garlic mayonnaise, before progressing to show-stopping plates like Dover sole Meuniere, lobster Thermidor, broiled veal T-bone, and Snake River Farms rib-eye. The steakhouse stylings keep going strong on the side, and for dessert, with options like steak fries and creamed spinach, followed by seven-layer coconut cake and ice cream sundaes. Round it all out with a classic cocktail or a glass of Old-World wine.

Canaletto - Holland America Line

As one of the most global cruise lines, with numerous sailings to Italy, Holland America knows a thing or two about authentic Italian cuisine — a concept on full, lustrous display at its elegant Italian concept, Canaletto. Found on nearly a dozen different ships, the airy restaurant pair prime sea views with prime meats, seafood, pasta, and some pleasant menu surprises.

Along with unique nightly specials, like osso bucco Milanese with saffron risotto on Mondays and veal liver Veneziana with mascarpone whipped potatoes on Wednesdays, the menu boasts shareable starts like veal and sage meatballs, beef carpaccio with mustard aïoli, and grilled calamari with salsa verde. Heartier portions exhibit a penchant for balance, refinement, and elegant plating, from the spaghetti alle vongole swirled with garlicky clams and shrimp, to braised beef short rib gnocchi with butter-roasted carrots and the grilled Branzino with verdant elements of zucchini, mint, and pistachios. Finish off with a silk-smooth orange blossom ricotta tart, and pair it with a bracing Negroni.

Remy - Disney Cruise Line

Among the most in-demand adults-only restaurants aboard the Disney Cruise Line fleet, Remy is a ritzy restaurant specializing in polished French fare partly inspired by Disney's most food-centric film, "Ratatouille." But instead of a rat chef, the mind behind the menus here is vaunted French chef Arnaud Lallement, who works with Scott Hunnel — from Disney World's most acclaimed restaurant , Victoria & Albert's — to curate a menu of authentic cuisine.

Meals here begin with a complimentary Champagne cocktail, followed by a spree of seasonal French fare via a multi-course tasting menu, highlighting ingredients like Kobe beef, sablefish, elk, duck, and langoustine. It's all interspersed with a roving cheese trolley, a deep wine list, and a five-course dessert experience. The restaurant also offers a prix fixe Champagne brunch, with plates like vegetable risotto, lobster cannelloni, and gnocchi. Remy can be found aboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

150 Central Park - Royal Caribbean

Considering cruise ships are far from land, the concept of farm-to-table cookery isn't typically associated with sailing the high seas. But thanks to restaurants like 150 Central Park, a rigorously seasonal restaurant rooted in farm-fresh ingredients plucked at their peak, those assumptions are shifting. Found on Royal Caribbean ships like the Allure of the Seas, the Oasis of the Seas, and the Harmony of the Seas, the restaurant serves dishes as artistic and contemporary as they are bright and bold.

Start with an Urban Garden Martini, a fresh aperitif made with vodka, cucumber, basil, and lemongrass, as you peruse appetizers like sunchoke veloute, roasted spiced pumpkin bisque, and seared honey-glazed scallops with chorizo stew and orange sauce. Entrées are even more elaborate, whereas seared venison loin comes with chocolate-port wine sauce, cauliflower steak features Greek yogurt and pumpkin seeds, and lamb Wellington arrives with butternut squash and garlic jus. For the grand finale, look for artisanal cheeses and fried cheesecake with Nutella and caramelized popcorn.

Mamsen's - Viking

Considering its Norse name, and the fact that the fleet sails to Norway, it's only fitting that Viking cruise line features a Scandinavian restaurant rooted in Norwegian tradition. So named for the mother of Viking chairman and CEO  Torstein Hagen (mamsen means "mum" in Norwegian), the cute and sunny eatery serves up atypical cruise fare like traditional heart-shaped waffles from the Explorer's Lounge of Viking's ocean ships.

Said waffles are Mamsen's calling card, an ode to a Norwegian household tradition otherwise known as hjertevafler. Thinner and less fluffy than their Belgian or American counterparts, they're served with brown goat cheese for a distinctly toasty richness. Elsewhere on the homegrown menu, guests will find dishes like open-faced sandwiches, cured meats, Norwegian cakes, and ertesuppe, aka pea soup. It's all served up in a quaint, relaxing cafe-like environment that feels comfortably aligned with the cozy Scandinavian concept of hygge.

Razzle Dazzle - Virgin Voyages

Known for its playful, colorful, and whimsical concepts, from hotels to airlines, Virgin Voyages keeps the cheeky theming going strong with its most unique dining and drinking concept, Razzle Dazzle. Found aboard the Scarlet Lady ship, this is the kind of exciting something-for-everyone bar and restaurant that serves everything from melon salad to rainbow churros.

The contemporary and stylish space skews vegetarian, with plates divvied into categories like small plates, mains, and meatier "naughty" options. Mushroom tartare and whole-roasted heirloom cauliflower are a couple of standouts, as is the vegetarian "fish" & chips, with crispy banana blossom subbing in for seafood. Fried chicken with buttered hot sauce provides a meaty option, while desserts shine with blueberry-green tea vegan cheesecake, rainbow churros with ube ice cream, and a whole category dedicated to milk and cookies. Also available on ships like the Scarlet Lady and the Valiant Lady, Razzle Dazzle by Night offers a late-night vibe with cocktails and disco-centric dance music.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

It’s all about the luxe life (Picture: Silverseas)

If you’ve been addicted to TikTok’s nine month cruise , and scrolled through pictures of the world’s largest cruise ship , you’re going to want to know about this oh-so- bougie offering, where guests are treated to the ultimate spa experience at sea.

First launched on the luxury liner, Silver Dawn, by Silversea Cruises, the ‘spa concept’ is said to be inspired by the lavish lifestyle of the Roman elite .

And while you’re not about to enter into a world of gladiators, feasts and orgies, it is all rather indulgent.

In fact, the concept was originally inspired by the pandemic: a chance for instant, decadent gratification, after literal years of being locked away inside.

So perhaps it’s no surprise it’s been nominated for an award in wellness (alongside Explora Journeys, Viking, Emerald Cruises, Amawaterways, Virgin Voyages and Swan Hellenic in the coveted wellness category) in the Sailawaze Excellence Awards in May .

The Otium Spa (Latin for ‘free time’), offers 100 minute-long signature treatments. Yep, 100 whole minutes where you’re kneaded and prodded into the land of ultimate relaxation.

Their treatment menu includes The Otium, a massage involving a mix of oils infused with shea butter, raspberry and chamomile. The Appollonian Spirit will ease tired muscles, and the Divine Experience includes a scalp, neck, shoulder and hand massage.

Fancy a dip? (Picture: Silverseas)

You’ll need deep pockets though, as each of these treatments cost a whopping $399. You can also get a little tweakment on board too, with wrinkle and dermal filler treatments meaning you could return to land looking 10 years younger.

And, as you hop from thermal spa to steam room to aromatherapy bath, you can enjoy champagne and caviar, 24 hours a day. It’d be rude not to.

There’s also cocktails, macarons, and chocolates on offer, and you’ll find fresh fruit and infused waters if you want to err on the side of healthy. The soothing music played throughout is also inspired by ancient Rome.

Metro has partnered with the Sailawaze Excellence Awards , highlighting the very best in cruising when it comes to sustainability, wellness, entertainment and beyond.

And we need YOU to simply select what you’ve been most impressed by.

The best bit? By voting you’ll automatically be in with a chance of winning a cruise for two worth £2,500.

Say bon voyage to the more traditional categories of 'best large ship' or 'best luxury cruise line' and instead ahoy to innovation, food and drink and showstopping performances.

But don’t think the Roman-esque vibes stop once you leave the spa.

Back in your cabin, there’s the Otium balcony experience. On chilly days, guests can order cashmere blankets and hot chocolate from their personal butler to be enjoyed on their veranda.

Roman inspired music is piped throughout (Picture: Silverseas)

There’s also the ‘food and chill’ experience, where your brings comfort food to your door. But this isn’t Doritos, dip and a dairy milk. The comfort food menu includes foie gras burgers and lobster on brioche.

And, when it’s time for bed, you can choose a pillow from a vast menu, curl up on 400 thread-count Egyptian cotton linens, and if you want to go all out, you can ask your butler to fill them room with their signature ‘sleeping scent’. We’re feeling dozy already.

Prices on Silver Nova start at £2,950 (Picture: Silverseas)

The Otium spa is available on three Silversea ships: Silver Dawn and Silver Nova. And of course, a luxury experience comes with a price tag.

The cheapest available voyage on the Silver Nova goes from Seward (Alaska) to Canada, for seven days and costs £2,950 per person (excluding off shore experiences).

On Silver Nova, the cheapest cruise goes from Stockholm to Copenhagen (or you can do the same trip in reverse) for £5,750 per person for seven days, taking in sites in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland along the way.

If you were wondering who else was nominated in the wellness category of the Sailawaze Excellence Awards (of which Metro is a partner of), we’ve got you.

Swan Hellenic has partnered with physician and author Deepak Chopra to create ‘Explore & Restore’ wellbeing voyages. Here you’ll find Chopra-certified meditation and yoga teachers offer daily private and group sessions with itineraries including Ayurvedic culinary offerings, daily meditation, yoga and breath-work classes.

Viking has its Nordic Spa, which features a Snow Grotto filled with manmade snow – based on the Scandinavian bathing ritual (involving alternating hot and cold therapies). The spa also includes an experience shower, an ice bucket beauty salon and more.

Virgin Voyages has its Athletic Club – designed like a retro athletic social club – which features a boxing ring, an outdoor active training camp, a basketball court and a cold-pressed juice bar. By night, the catamaran net provides a perfect spot for stargazing.

AmaWaterways Wellness nomination is the AmaMagna: the first river cruise ship to offer a full-sized pickleball court. Onboard classes offer workout classes such as ’champagne yoga’ on selected sailings with the Mekong cruises offering unique wellness activities like tea ceremonies, tai chi, yoga, and guided meditation.

Emerald Cruises has fitness activities including guided hikes and bike rides, plus canoeing and kayaking excursions, with dedicated on board spas and professionally trained treatment therapists. A wellness coach is on hand to provide fitness advice and group lessons, including open-air yoga and water aerobics and a state-of-the-art infrared sauna on Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara is also your wellness mate. The cruises promote space, relaxation, and a more personalised service, with the crew addressing guests by their first names and remembering their favourite drinks.

Finally, Explora Journeys has in-suite apps for guided meditation, morning stretches, sleep-boosting soundtracks and exercise videos, as well as open-air workout facilities and a fitness centre and studio equipped with Pilates Reformers and Technogym equipment. That comes with expert-led retreat programmes for immune boosting and sleep and a spa that features a Finnish sauna, Himalayan salt cave and multi-sensory experience showers.
