Old Sled Sighting: 1994 Ski-Doo Safari Deluxe—on cusp of vintage

If a vintage snowmobile starts at 25 years, then this 1994 Ski-Doo Safari is on the cusp of being a vintage ride.

— October 12, 2017

A 1994 Ski-Doo Safari Deluxe, a dusty relic from back in the day.

Some will say that a dusty relic hardly qualifies as vintage snowmobile, but I found this 1994 Ski Doo Safari Deluxe sitting in a shed waiting to see the light of day. The owner said it was the “kid’s sled” but the kid hadn’t ridden it in a while. So what’s the story of Ski-Doo Safari?

Here’s what one forum contributor had to say about the Safari: “So far it's been a real nice first sled! It's pretty quick, but I wish it was a little faster. She tops out at around 85-90 km/h.”

If a vintage snowmobile starts at 25 years, then this 1994 Ski Doo Safari is on the cusp of being a vintage ride.

Talking about sleds of this era, American Snowmobiler stated back in 1995, “Ski-Doo recognizes this. That is why you see the Bombardier line taking on a very familiar stance. The 1995 models are all based on the F-2000 chassis, DSA front suspensions, C-7 type rear suspension, and proven Rotax engines from one to three cylinders. This year, Ski-Doo has "out-Polarised" Polaris when it comes to efficiency and standardization in its model mix. Oh, yeah. The Safari replacements, now simply Touring models, combine the best of the best - the F-2000 chassis and rock-steady Rotax fan-cooled engines. And with standardization comes an ability to offer aggressive pricing, which is good news for snowmobile consumers. Doesn't this all sound familiar? Isn't that what Polaris has been doing with its Indy? And isn't it what Yamaha would do with the Max series if it was focused?”

Surpassing and overshadowing the Ski-Doo Safari line up was the milestone introduction of the Summit line, because on September 14, 1993 the two millionth Ski-Doo snowmobile was manufactured in Valcourt, Québec. Bombardier creates a new segment in the snowmobiling market with the Summit model, especially designed for powder snow and mountain terrain.

'85-'94 Ski-doo Safaris

  • Add to quote

I was just wondering about the Ski-Doo Safaris. I wanted to know if they are good motor, good gas mileage, good performance, and basically maintenance-free. I was wondering what the a good price would be for an '85-'94 safari. It dosnt matter what model of safari it is, as long as the 377 motor has twin carbs. Thats a must. If someone could tell me what year and model of safaris had the twin carbs and what the top speed would be of this sled it would be great. SWRules

Safaris can be had here around Barrie, Ontario for about $500. bucks or less. I'm talking about the 377's that are single carb, I'm not sure if the the 477's had twins or not but they are pretty much not worth anything around here unless you ice fish. Leaf springs and ziltch for suspension are there biggest downfall. I have a 85 safari right now that I have had since new and this sled had never let me down during the years I did ride it and I rode the snot out of it. It will go forever on a tank of gas, the only thing it cost me was a new starter rope and thats it. I do know the Citation SS had the same motor pretty much with the twin carbs and were a hoot in there time but these sleds are really outdated.

We sold our 93 377 Safari Deluxe this year. It was a twin carb and never let us down. It would run 80-85 flat out on a hard surface. It was a good beginner sled for my son who was 12 when we picked it up. It sold for 2000 with 3800 km on it and barely a scratch. It was always serviced and it showed. It rode good and handled OK on good trails. It wasn't much at off trail riding. It was very easy on gas. For a beginer sled or to tool around the farm it is great. For aggressive trail riding, no way. Mind you that big windshield kept you as warm as could be.

what year was yours BARRIEMACHZ?

My uncle has an 88 377 and the only thing he has had to change in almost 15 years now is a track. the sled still starts on first pull everytime. it is still fast enough to keep up with alot of the new sleds. he still loves it. it has about 25,000 k on it . he dosen't do any road riding or he dosen't ride in low snow conditions. guess that is why he has never changed Hi-Fax.

Fuzzy: Does it have 2 carbs? Electric Start, hand/thumb warmers? Speedo? Tach? How fast has he had it going? Ok thanks.

FREEZERBURNT: How was the Scout E on gas? What colour was it? Good performance??

Yellow but mine was painted black by previous owner :hallo1: Some Safaries are black, some are yellow and some are burgundy Its a 377 so it runs great for a 377 it will do 100kmph They are good on gas

One carb has a spedo no tach ,electric start or any other options like that.. track is a 118 or a 121 X 16 1/2 " don't know what spped he has had it at. it was a fast skidoo in it's day. the same cc cats and poos couldn't look at in speed or deep snow. he is thinking about getting a Gade next year so his son can use the 377. forgot to mention gas milage was excelent. before I got my sks I had a tundra and I would bunr two tanks of gas to his one. he gets about 15-17 MPG Click to expand...

How much would it cost for someone to put a second carb on say a '89 Safari 377?

Would it increase the power much? faster accelaration and top speed?

Got a 89 safari cheyenne 503 Long track, just did the first rebuild after 20000 km. A part from the susp which is a real POS, it is a great work sled ,not for trails though. Top speed was 95 kph.

1993 Safari Deluxe

Hey guy's, i recently got a good offer on a skidoo (93 safari dlx) for 500 dollars. It's in perfect running condition, new ski's, new belt, but I'm just wondering if it's a good skidoo or not. I seen a few topics saying that they're not very good, but i'm just looking for a skidoo to go on a burn with my buddies. I've searched google and I can't seem to find hardly any information on them at all, and hardly any pictures of what it actually looks like (havn't went to look at the skidoo yet, it's a close friends). So is it worth getting?

ski doo safari deluxe

I used to own a 1991 377 safari. i liked my machine. It was light decent in deep snow and overall reliable. I melted down a piston but that was due to a badly worn oil injection cable that snapped and should of been detected. I used to bull a sled behind it (approx 200 lbs total) and i was able to break trail doing so. It is a decently powered machine that tops out at 90 to 100kph on a packed trail. Its no tundra or scandi but it served me well.

ski doo safari deluxe

Was yours a Scout? If so, different animal altogether.

Hope you're not planning on going for too many "burns" unless you have a match with you! I had one of these for several years. Although the engine and clutches are bulletproof, the chassis is perhaps the worst that Ski-doo used in the last 20 years. Heavy and with terrible understeer, the Transverse-A chassis was a big loser. Everything negative that you have read in this forum about the Skandic II's (92-94 inclusive) applies to this model too, only worse b/c it's a short track version of the Skandic II. Try to find yourself a good used Indy Lite, Jag AFS, Indy 500, or 95-ish Skandic 380/Touring E/LE 380 instead. You can get them for cheaps as well and they are miles ahead of that Safari DeLuxe. Honestly, I wouldn't buy one even for $500. Take it from somebody who drove one for several seasons. It's terrible.

ski doo safari deluxe

i got a 91 safari l, 377 and it does the job for me, not the fastest, but certinaly not as heavy as people makes them out to me. my machine is around 450 pounds tops, and the lil old safari scout is 375 pounds. yes teher is a difference there but rem the track is a lil bigger i think, 16.5 x 124 " compares to 15 x 115" (might be wrong on that don't quote) the engine is bullet proof, cheep on gas, mine isn't that bad in snow, and can almost climb any hill i trow at it.

tnt377 said: mine isn't that bad in snow, and can almost climb any hill i trow at it. Click to expand...

I have a 92 Safari LE. Now some here have a very negative opinion about these particular sleds but over all a reliable machine. Not really fast, pulls well. Handling is a bit touchy in really deep snow hard to throw around but when you are on the flat works well. Mine always starts, is really good on gas. If it runs as well as you have been lead to believe then any thing that runs well is worth 500 IMO. You will get your money out of it next year when you decide to upgrade. There are better sleds during that era granted but you have to make up your own mind. Just be thankful that it is not the same year and model as mine it is a lovely shade. Skidoo called it rose. Looks pink to me!! Takes a real man to drive a pink sled!! LOL If you have teenage boys who drive it as well it will build character!! Have fun and hope that you make the right decision for you.

I have a 92 Safari, acquired as part of an ice fishing deal. I do not really care about hill climbing or trail breaking in deep snow. I just trailer to the lakes and use it for that. My problem is I have developed a leak in the gas viewing ?gauge? in the fuel tank. Problem 1, how in the heck do you remove the tank? Problem 2, can it be repaired, or is this a replace only? I am sure I will have a time rounding up parts for this old lady. Any response from one of you experienced snow-machiners, will, I am sure be very helpful. Icefisher

ski doo safari deluxe

I had a brand new 1986 safari 377. Paid $3000 brand new. Great machine for it's time. 30 miles was a long day and you needed to take the next day off to let your body heal. I think the Deluxe is a 503 two up. Didn't they call it a Rally too. A light blue colour. Again great for it's time but your buddies will be leaving you behind and when you catch up they'll be ready to go. No rest for the tired. To remove the tank on the 377 I think you need to remove the seat first. Once this is off you'll see how it comes off. RR

I picked up a '93 Safari Deluxe for my wife this winter...Electric start, two up seat...very comfortable sled, light and easy to throw around...The engines are pretty well put gas in it and forget about it...Wifey loves it, I have found myself taking it and leaving my '96 formula III home....

1985 Grand Lux Safari SkiDoo

Guy says 300 miles. Went from house to mailbox with it. Wants 800 dollars and is 512 CC. Too old? All original hand warmers and electric start. Says lots of rust and paint pealing off. Probably shouldn't buy it, eh?

ski doo safari deluxe

Just talked to him. Won't budge on the price. There is no rust on the machine except for the track area. Engine compartment is spotless. 521cc twin liquid cooled, electric start, hand warmers. Was his father's sled who would drive it to the mailbox and back when it snowed. Says he has every record on it and had it serviced every year for 20 years! Says he just paid $300 for it to be servicedin Oct 2005. Is this a nice sled ... for its day?

The sled needs no work. The only wear is the discoloration from sitting on the front seat in the thigh area. The only rust is on the beginning of the exhaust pipe ... and a few spots of rust on wear spots of the track. Is this a 136 track? Does anyone know the weight? Is frame steel or aluminum?

Vehicle

So .. would you buy the 2000 Panther with Reverse 9700 miles for $1350 (pics in Arctic Cat forum) or the 1985 Ski doo Safari Deluxe liquid cooled electric start with 299 miles for $800?

If you are planning to ride two up the panther is the better buy. also the newer sled will likely cost less in maintenance. the safari is a good sled but older and has sat for several seasons. there can be hidden problems when this happens, such as dry rot of the track and carb boots and other items.

I plan on using it to go to a cabin at 6400 feet when the road closes. It is a seven mile one way by road (snow unplowed). It is in a National Forest and we received special permission to drive to cabin from road to move supplies and people. Snow will be 4 to 15 feet deep. Average depth is 6 feet. Temperature during the day is in 30's and 20's at night. Last year part of cabin collasped in 30 feet of snow/ice and rebuilt it.

ski doo safari deluxe

sounds fairly treacherous. I'm not sure I would want to be driving a 26 year old sled in those conditions. Someone else mentioned parts may be scarce for this machine as well if something does go wrong...

the panther will have a longer track than the sumit also. better for deap snow.

So the Ski Doo is an 85 GL 521cc Liquid cooled oil injection. 16.5 X 124 track (hard to get) Electric start. Do you know how much it weighs? Some one said they guess it weighs 470 pounds with fluids. Sound about right?

Was told the Arctic cat will weigh 700 pounds with fluids.

RJ Gleason said: 470 may be the dry weight before any fluids are added. the total weight will be around 600 to 650 lbs. Although the Panther may be heavier by a little, the longer track (136in) will more than compensate and will be better in the deep snow. the suspension is better too withe the adjustable overload spring arm that allows you to setup for one or two riders. you just flip the lever and it preloads for more carrying weight and when you are on it alone, you can have it set for your personal preference. Click to expand...

Foot print area would be 124X16.5 2046 square inches vs The 15x136 of 2040square inches. So which is better Longer VS. Wider?

brown do you have a pic of the front of your sled that you can put up with no cover i cant find one and i'm being offered one to buy out of town and don't want to waist my time going to it not to like the way it looks if so can you put it up please or can any one put one up for me to see thank you

safari I love vintage sleds, and that one is a peach. It is basically a long track safari with all the luxo goodies they had at the time. Here in NYS $800 would also buy you a early 90s 2up with decent miles (less than 3000) with reverse. There is nothing wrong with buying an old sled, I ran my (similar) 87 Ski Doo Escapade hundreds of miles and had a great time, very reliable. If you are just looking for short runs, no reason not to get this. For long runs, more suspension is a serious advantage.

ski doo safari deluxe

If you're looking for a daily rider, get the newer sled. Things break on sleds. The Ski Doo is 26 years old. Parts will be extremely scarce if you can find them at all.
