Head and Asst. coaches along with others who come into contact with players must have a background check that was run no earlier than February 1st, 2020.  These have to be done before practices and games begin.  This has been mandatory for Fairfax County coaches and will now be mandatory for all NVTBL coaches and administrators.   NVTBL has secured an arrangement with USA Baseball to provide a low cost option for background checks (only $6).  If you have already done a background check after 1/31/20 and can provide the documentation, that will suffice.  We will be sending out the USA Baseball background check option and also follow-up with additional specifics. NVTBL wants to notify everyone now so that you can start to prepare a plan within your organizations and teams.

ROSTERS / SCHEDULES

Rosters / Schedules- NBM

By Joey Kamide .    NOVA Baseball Magazine

February 4 - Over 40 Division I recruits will suit up next month in the new D.C. Prospect League, which will lead into the abbreviated Virginia high school season set to begin in mid-April.

The four-team league will consist of an 18-game regular season played from Feb. 28 to Apr. 5, with games held at the new Fredericksburg Nationals ballpark and South County Middle School in Lorton. Both venues feature turf playing surfaces.

The league’s coaches will limit pitchers to 30 pitches to begin the season, with that count eventually increasing to 45.

“We are very excited to provide opportunities for high school players in both the DC Prospect League and the Spring Training Team League,” said Northern Virginia Travel Baseball League executive director Rob Hahne, one of the league’s organizers. “Baseball in March will be so important for all of these players both mentally and physically.”

The DCPL will give Major League Baseball scouts an opportunity to check in on potential pro prospects such as Madison senior two-way standout James Triantos, a North Carolina recruit who saw his draft stock rise after an impressive showing at October’s Perfect Game WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, FL. Other seniors such as Marshall righty Kyle Robinson (Texas Tech), Freedom-South Riding shortstop and pitcher Casey Cook (North Carolina) and Riverside right-hander Wyatt Shenkman (East Carolina) are also on draft radars, and a number of the league’s underclassmen - notably Bishop O’Connell right-hander Jack O’Connor (Virginia), Independence righty Bryce Dolby (Mississippi) and McLean outfielder and pitcher Griffin Stieg (Virginia Tech) - are considered potential prospects for the 2022 MLB Draft.

The league will provide an ultra-competitive environment for some of the area’s top talent as the state’s high school programs prepare for a long-awaited return to the diamond. Both the Virginia High School League and Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association are scheduled to begin their abbreviated seasons on Apr. 12.

The last public school contest played in Virginia was on June 14, 2019 when Lake Braddock defeated Westfield in the VHSL Class 6 state final. A handful of private school games were played last spring before the COVID-19 shutdown.

NVTBL HS Spring Training League

Our HS Spring Training League will play from March 2 - April 3.  This league will help prepare players for their upcoming HS seasons on April 12th.  We are very excited to provide this opportunity for high-level HS players throughout Northern Virginia.

NVTBL Team Workshops

NVTBL is offering a new Baseball Education based initiative for this off-season.  This initiave is for teams and it will be a game changer for your team and your players.  Ron Tugwell and Rob Hahne have been running similar workshops for teams we coached over the past 20 years.  They are very well received and one of the best things we have done.  NVTBL's Professional Advisory Committee comprised of Head HS Coaches, College Coaches and former Pro Players has decided to offer this to all NVTBL teams this fall/winter.  There are limited date offerings and each workshop allows only 2 teams to participate to keep the sessions small.

TEAM- PLAYER DEVELOPMENT / LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS (parents encouraged to attend)

-  Academics

-  Social / Leadership / Life Lessons

-  Player Development Plan- getting 2% better each day

-  Mental Approach-  Hitting / Pitching / Defense

-  Playing w/ Confidence / Aggressive Approach

-  What it takes to play HS Baseball (ages 8u - 14u)

-  What it takes to play College Baseball (ages 15u - 18u)

-  Q and A

-  Handout Packets included for each player

TEAM WORKSHOP REGISTRATION

You can register your entire team at the link below.  It is $50 per team which comes out to be less than $2 pp when you include parents and coaches.  That basically covers our cost to run the event with handouts included.  We will take 2 teams for each Workshop offered.  Each workshop runs 75 - 90 minutes.  Players, coaches and parents should bring something to write with and write on.

Virginia Hosting a Regional in D1Baseball Midseason Tournament Projections

  • Author: Matt Newton

The calendar has turned to April and even though two months still remain until the start of the 2024 NCAA Baseball Tournament, the discussions and debates have already begun about what the field of 64 will look like when it's announced on May 27th and more importantly, who will get to host regionals as top 16 seeds.

D1Baseball.com released its 2024 Midseason Field of 64 Projections on Wednesday and Virginia was one of those top 16 seeds. UVA is listed as the No. 14 overall seed and D1Baseball has the Cavaliers hosting TCU, Rutgers, and Bryant in the Charlottesville Regional at Disharoon Park. Of course, the seeds and regional matchups are bound to change quite a bit over the next two months, but it's helpful to get an idea of where things stand for the Cavaliers at this point in the season.

Based on the projection, Virginia is a safe bet to at least qualify for the NCAA Tournament, barring some massive collapse in the final six weeks of the season. D1Baseball has UVA as one of the 16 hosts, but not with a lot of room for error. The Cavaliers are closer to the edge of the top 16 than they are to cracking the coveted top 8, which are teams that would get to host Regionals and Super Regionals, playing at home all the way to the College World Series.

Virginia sits at 23-6 overall and 7-5 in ACC play, with its best result being a series win over current No. 21 Wake Forest. UVA also has a road series sweep over Pittsburgh and is 16-1 in non-conference play. The Cavaliers most recently lost two out of three on the road to No. 9 Duke last weekend and, earlier this month, suffered a bad series loss on the road to unranked Miami, a result that exposed UVA's pitching flaws that are the biggest thing holding the Hoos back right now. Virginia scored 31 total runs in that Miami series but still lost thanks to a 6-5 loss in game 1 and a disastrous 16-12 loss in game 2. UVA needed 14 runs just to avoid the sweep in game 3. Season-ending injuries to Jack O'Connor and Bradley Hodges have played a big part in UVA's pitching struggles, which have seen some improvement in the last few weeks, but still have a ways to go. Virginia's offense is doing its job, ranking No. 4 in the country in scoring at 10.1 runs per game, but the pitching will have to catch up if the Cavaliers want to make a return trip to Omaha.

Virginia will have plenty of opportunities to either improve or tarnish its NCAA Tournament resume over the next two months. Still to come are ranked series matchups with No. 10 North Carolina, No. 19 NC State, and No. 11 Virginia Tech. The 10th-ranked Tar Heels are in Charlottesville this weekend. Game 1 is set for Thursday at 7pm at Disharoon Park, with game 2 following on Friday at 6pm and the series wrapping up on Saturday at 1pm. Thursday's game will be televised on the ACC Network, while the other two games will stream on ACC Network Extra.

Salem to host first USA Pickleball sanctioned tournament in Virginia’s Blue Ridge

SALEM, Va. ( WFXR ) — The first USA Pickleball-sanctioned tournament is coming to the Roanoke Valley’s very own City of Salem!

On April 2, the city announced that it will host the “Picklebrawl in Virginia’s Blue Ridge” at the newly renovated Moyer Sports Complex from September 13 to 15.

The major pickleball championship is expected to bring up to 450 players from the Mid-Atlantic region. To bring the vision to life, Performace Pickleball was chosen to organize the tournament.

Performance Pickleball opening second Virginia facility in Roanoke

“The tournament represents the desire of so many to collaborate and innovate as the Roanoke Valley becomes a vibrant hub for pickleballers throughout the region and beyond,” said Jon Laaser , the Performance Pickleball COO and tournament organizer.

The pickleball tournament will kick off on the second weekend in September. This will mark as the first tournament to battle on the Moyer Sports Complex’s 13 new pickleball courts.

“Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States,” said John Shaner , Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Salem. “This addition will complement and add to what we already host here at the Moyer Sports Complex in Virginia’s Championship City.”

High school sports | el dorado baseball stays hot with victory over gahr in national classic semifinals, el dorado advances to the tournament’s championship game with another strong effort at the plate and on the mound.

virginia travel baseball tournaments

PLACENTIA — The bats stayed hot for the El Dorado baseball team in a 10-0 victory over Gahr in the semifinals of the National Classic Thursday at El Dorado High School.

The game ended after the fifth inning because of the tournament’s mercy rule, which is triggered when a team has a 10-run lead after five innings.

El Dorado (12-8) has scored a total of 28 runs in its three victories in the tournament, which included a 7-6, come-from-behind victory over Granada Hills Charter on Wednesday, when the Hawks scored four runs in their final at-bat.

The Hawks advance to the tournament championship, which is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Friday at El Dorado.

“We knew what they were capable of,” El Dorado coach Matt Lucas said of his team’s offense. “Early in the year we were kind of struggling a little bit offensively, but it seems like everybody’s kind of on the same page offensively. Guys are having good at-bats, and it’s kind of rolling right now.”

El Dorado also got another fine performance on the mound from Esperanza transfer Travis Maxwell, who allowed four hits, had four strikeouts, picked two runners off second base and didn’t allow a runner to get past second.

Maxwell, who by CIF-SS rules had to sit out the first month of the season as a transfer, improved to 3-0 and hasn’t allowed a run since becoming eligible to play.

“Since he’s become eligible, he’s kind of been our guy,” Lucas said. “We knew he would have a good outing. He’s done a good job for us.”

The Hawks collected five hits in a row and sent nine hitters to the plate in a four-run first.

Nine hitters in the lineup had at least one hit and eight of nine scored at least one run.

Diego Gonzalez, who singled to drive in a run and then scored the winning run in Wednesday’s game, went 2 for 3 with a home run, a run scored and two RBIs.

Jake Vanderzee went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored and Brady Abner went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

“We came into this game ready to play,” Gonzalez said. “We put up four in the first. After that I was pretty confident we were going to win. We just needed to scratch a couple here and there.”

The Hawks’ recent surge offensively comes after the team had difficulty scoring early in the season.

“I feel like everybody’s just gained confidence in themselves the past few weeks,” Gonzalez said. “You can feel it in the dugout. Everybody’s just so much better energy.”

El Dorado shortstop A.J. Frausto snagged a grounder deep in the hole and made a long throw to Vanderzee at first to retire the runner for the first out of the fifth.

In the same inning, the Hawks also turned a 4-6-3 double play for the final two outs of the game.
