of Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

After his breakthrough with leading roles in ‘Risky Business’ and ‘ Top Gun ‘ in the 1980s, Thomas “Tom” Cruise Mapother IV started bagging pivotal roles in several dramas, including ‘ Born on the Fourth of July ,’ for which he even won a Golden Globe Award and got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the 1990s, he rose to newer heights of stardom by featuring in various commercially successful films, such as ‘ A Few Good Men ,’ ‘ Interview with the Vampire ,’ ‘The Firm,’ and ‘ Jerry Maguire .’

Once he impacted dramas, he started traversing the action and sci-fi genres. By landing some iconic roles in the ‘ Mission: Impossible ‘ film series, ‘ Collateral ,’ ‘ Edge of Tomorrow ,’ and ‘ Top Gun: Maverick ,’ he established himself as an action star, performing most of the risky stunts on his own. The winner of three Golden Globe Awards, four nominations for the Oscars, and an Honorary Palme d’Or, Tom Cruise is known to be one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Given his immense popularity and fandom, most of our readers are looking forward to his future projects. Here is a list of all the upcoming movies and TV shows of Tom Cruise!

1. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (2024)

Tom Cruise recently jumped off a cliff on a motorbike for ‘ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ‘ and he will be in action soon enough in its sequel, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’ Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the spy action movie is the eighth installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time running.

Although the plot details are kept under wraps, the action-adventure film is most likely to resume Ethan’s hunt for The Entity as he meets some new friends and foes along the way. The production for the sequel began in March 2022 but is yet to be finished due to the delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Having gone through several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to its release date, it is now officially set to be released on June 28, 2024. But it is very much possible that it will get postponed again due to the pause in production.

2. Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project (TBA)

tom cruise films on tv this week

Tom Cruise is set to take his status as an action star to the next level by traveling out of Earth to film the first ever Hollywood motion picture in outer space. In May 2020, it was reported that Elon Musk’s Space X and Cruise were working on an action-adventure project with NASA. Not only is Cruise expected to be blasted into space alongside filmmaker Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked in ‘ American Made ‘ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ for the upcoming film, but he will also live up to his reputation by attempting to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station. In this movie, Cruise is set to essay the role of a down-on-his-luck man who is the sole person in the position to save Earth. Apart from starring in the film, he is attached to the project as a writer as well as a producer.

3. Live Die Repeat and Repeat (TBA)

A sequel to the 2014 movie ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ is an upcoming science fiction film that will reportedly reunite Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, with the former set to reprise his role as Major William Cage. Moreover, Emily Blunt is also rumored to portray Rita again, alongside Cruise. Ever since the release of the hit original film, talks of a sequel have been flying around. However, in 2019, it was finally set in motion when Matthew Robinson was brought on to write the script.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, in a May 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly , Emily Blunt revealed, “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.” With the project still lingering in the development stage, it is hard to expect it to be brought to life in at least a couple of years.

'Reacher': release date, cast, plot, trailer, first looks, and everything you need to now about the Jack Reacher spin-off

Amazon's 'Reacher' is a new action-packed adaptation on Prime Video featuring Lee Child's famous hero.

'Reacher' star Alan Ritchson ready for action and out to prove he didn't commit murder.

Jack Reacher fans have an all-action thriller series featuring their favorite hero to get their teeth into. Move over Tom Cruise though, as Reacher on Amazon Prime Video will star Titans ’ Alan Ritchson as the towering, roaming veteran military police investigator in a thrilling new action-packed mystery crime series based on the novels by Lee Child .

Like the famous movies starring Tom Cruise, 2012’s  Jack Reacher  and 2016’s  Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , the eight-part series is packed with bare-knuckle fight scenes, clever stunts, gun battles, and a hint of romance, and has author Lee Child on board as executive producer.

So here’s everything we know so far about the Jack Reacher spin-off coming to Amazon Prime Video, including its first-look pictures and trailer…

'Reacher' arrives Feb 4 2022.

'Reacher' release date

All eight episodes of Reacher will be released worldwide Friday, Feb. 4 2022 on Amazon Prime Video.

It's one of a string of exciting things coming to Amazon Prime, including Amazon's Lords of the Rings TV series .

Is there a 'Reacher' trailer?

Yes, there's a great trailer for Reacher released by Amazon Prime Video. It shows Ritchson’s Reacher arriving in fictional town of Margrave, where he piques the interest of the local authorities, who are disturbed by the seven deaths that coincide with his arrival. It shows some thrilling fist fights, an obligatory topless shot, plus a scene of him popping off a beer bottle with just his muscles, and also hints at some romance for the character. Take a look at all the action right here with the trailer below plus a further clip (with a lot of fighting)...

'Reacher' plot

Reacher is based on Lee Child’s first Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor , and follows the police investigator fresh out of the military, as he turns up in the small town of Margrave, Georgia, to find a community dealing with its first murder in 20 years. The cops immediately arrest Reacher and eyewitnesses claim to place Reacher at the scene of the crime. But while he works to prove his innocence, a deep-seated conspiracy begins to emerge.

"Within minutes of him arriving, he's arrested for murder," says Alan Ritchson, 39. "He basically has to solve the case to prove his innocence, and along the way he starts to uncover this sinister plot, and realises it’s close to home!’

Jack Reacher is a former military man.

'Reacher' cast — Alan Ritchson on playing Jack Reacher

Alan Ritchson plays Jack Reacher.

Alan Ritchson is best known for playing Hank Hall (aka Hawk) in DC’s Titans and Aquaman in Smallville . And at six foot three inches tall, he’s much closer to the imposing six foot five character in Lee Child’s novels compared to Cruise, who’s five foot seven.

Reacher star Alan Ritchson told Whattowatch.com : "He is a retired military police officer who is huge, violent, highly intelligent, and an incredible detective. Now that he’s out of the military, he sort of wanders the country, and trouble seems to find him. He’s that knight in shining armour who cleans up the streets for us. He is the drifter who comes into town, and who doesn’t rely on the law because he is the law."

Alan says he found Reacher’s combination of brains and brawn, together with his tendency not to say much, fascinating to play. "You expect somebody who looks like that to be a bit of a brute. But Reacher’s so sharp that he's one step ahead of everybody. He's a man of few words, and he allows people to believe what they want to believe about him. So he’s a mental gymnast, but the size of an ox!"

'Reacher' star Alan Ritchson is 6ft 3in tall..

'Reacher' cast — who else is starring

The Reacher cast also includes  What We Do in the Shadows ’ Harvey Guillén and  iZombie ’s Malcolm Goodwin, while  The Goldfinch ’s Willa Fitzgerald as cop Roscoe Conklin and Bruce McGill ( My Cousin Vinny ) plays Mayor Teale.

You'll also see Jack Reacher as a child, so there must be flashback scenes somewhere along the line in the drama. Young Reacher is played by Maxwell Jenkins, who famously plays Will Robinson in Lost In Space on Netflix.

Fans of British soaps should look out for Matthew Marsden, who was Chris Collins in Coronation Street . He plays Stan Reacher in this drama.

'Reacher' star Alan Ritchson on duty with Willa Fitzgerald.

A brief guide to the previous Jack Reacher films

Lee Child has written 26 Jack Reacher books and two have been adapted for the big screen, both starring Tom Cruise as the ex army investigator turned drifter. The 2012 movie Jack Reacher saw Reacher help solve the case of five people shot dead in a seemingly random attack and also starred Rosamund Pike as the sniper’s defence attorney. Meanwhile, 2016 follow-up Jack Reacher: Never Go Back followed Reacher as he went on the run with an Army major who had been framed for espionage, as the two revealed a dark conspiracy.

All about Jack Reacher novelist Lee Child

The hugely popular Jack Reacher novels read like a love letter to America, packed as they are with diners and motels that their protagonist visits as he drifts from one small town to another across the US, righting wrongs along the way. However, their creator, Lee Child , was born in Coventry, schooled in Birmingham, studied law in Sheffield and worked in television production in Manchester. It was only after the publication of his first novel Killing Floor , on which the new series Reacher is based, that Lee Child – born James Grant – emigrated to the US.

"America is an exciting place to live and an ideal setting for my series of thrillers," says the 67-year-old. "My stories have been set all over the US – from Montana to Mississippi."

Despite the success of the books, Lee Child announced in 2020 that he would be letting his brother, Andrew Grant , take over authorship of the Reacher series.

"Andrew really is me 15 years ago, still full of energy, still full of ideas," says Lee, who has already co-written three Reacher books with his sibling."And so I think this is the perfect solution."

Paramount+: Every Tom Cruise Movie That's Currently Streaming

By Daniel S. Levine - June 5, 2022 09:30 pm EDT

Tom Cruise helped reinvigorate the box office again  this weekend thanks to the eye-popping success of Top Gun: Maverick . Cruise is now 40 years into his career as a superstar, and many of the movies that helped him reach that status are available to stream on Paramount+ . That includes the original Top Gun , which was made for Paramount in 1986.

Maverick   grossed an astonishing $160.5 million in its first four days of release, reports Variety . That is now the biggest Memorial Day debut in history, edging just past Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End , which opened with $153 million. It helps that Maverick earned the widest release in film history, playing at 4,732 North American cinemas.

The new movie also proved how big a star Cruise is overseas. Maverick made $139 million in foreign markets, bringing its international total to over $300 million. Maverick is also the first movie in Cruise's career to make over $100 million in its opening weekend. War of the Worlds earned Cruise's previous biggest opening with a $64 million weekend in 2005. Now that you've satisfied the need... the need for speed, here's a look at the other Cruise movies readily available on Paramount+.

Taps (1981)

Taps is technically Cruise's second movie after he had a cameo role in Endless Love , released a few months earlier. However, Taps features Cruise's first major role as Cadet Captain Alex Dwyer. The movie's true star is Timothy Hutton, who was coming off his success in Ordinary People . Taps was based on a novel by Devery Freeman about military school cadets who take over the school to stop its closure. George C. Scott, Ronny Cox, and Sean Penn also star.

Top Gun (1986)

top-gun-getty-images.jpg

Although Top Gun has been available on other streamers in the past, Paramount made sure to have it available to stream on its own platform ahead of Maverick 's release. While the success of Risky Business (streaming on HBO Max) proved Cruise was a star, Top Gun proved he could also lead a blockbuster. The movie became a phenomenon, so ingrained in pop culture that a sequel could dominate the box office 36 years later.

The Color of Money (1986)

the-color-of-money-getty-images.jpg

While Top Gun was Cruise's big movie of 1986, he also starred in Martin Scorsese's acclaimed sequel to The Hustler , The Color of Money . It is best known today for helping Paul Newman secure his much-delayed Oscar victory. However, Cruise gives an electric performance as the young pool hustler Newman takes under his wing.

Mission: Impossible

mission-impossible-fallout-rotten-tomatoes-score-revealed-20040724.jpg

Five of the six Mission: Impossible movies are available on Paramount+ as of this writing. The only one you won't find there is J.J. Abrams' Mission: Impossible III , which is now on Showtime. The next movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , will be released in 2023.

War of the Worlds (2005)

In 2005, Cruise reunited with Minority Report director Steven Spielberg to star in a new take on H.G. Welles' War of the Worlds . Cruise earned acclaim for his performance in the film, but he has not worked with Spielberg since.

Tropic Thunder (2008)

Anyone who saw Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder when it came out can remember the revelation at the end of the movie that Cruise played the obnoxious studio executive. His performance as Les Grossman is one of the many parts of Tropic Thunder that feel very different over a decade after its release. The character was loosely inspired by Scott Rudin , whose poor treatment of people and temper in real life were played for jokes here. Last year, several employees spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his abusive behavior, which eventually led to him stepping back from his stage and screen productions.

Jack Reacher (2012)

In the 2010s, Cruise appeared to be searching desperately for another franchise with Jack Reacher and later The Mummy . Although author Lee Child wrote dozens of novels about Jack Reacher, Cruise only wound up making two movies, Jack Reacher (2012) and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016). Cruise's casting as Reacher was controversial among the character's fans because he didn't match the character's description. However, Cruise had Child's endorsement in 2012. Eventually, though, Child came around to agree with fans in 2018 that Cruise wasn't right for the part. Alan Ritchson stars as Reacher in the Amazon Prime Video series that debuted in February.

Netflix to add Tom Cruise blockbuster with 99% on Rotten Tomatoes this month

Aviators at the ready

Top Gun: Maverick

QUICK SUMMARY

Netflix is adding the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick to its platform. The Tom Cruise film will be available from March 22nd.

It may be the weekend of the Oscars but sometimes you can have your fill of arthouse movies and just want to watch something spectacular instead. There's nothing wrong with that, but you will have to wait just a little longer to watch one of the biggest movies in years at home.

On March 22nd, Netflix is entering the danger zone, that's right, Top Gun: Maverick will hit the streaming service. It's no indie darling but that's not stopped it from universal acclaim with a stellar 99% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 96% critic score. That's a heck of an achievement and you'll soon be able to catch it on another of the best streaming services (it's already available on Paramount Plus ).

A follow-up 36 years in the making, Top Gun: Maverick sees Tom Cruise's peerless pilot (who looks almost the exact same) return. Now he's teaching the next generation of aces how to be heroes, including the son of his late former wingman Goose (Miles Teller) - I'm not crying, you are. Rooster (his callsign) is a capable pilot with lofty career goals, but Maverick made a promise to the boy's mother that he wouldn't let him fly, putting him in a difficult position.

But what you really want to know are two things, is the flying epic? And is there a volleyball scene? The answer to both is an emphatic yes. Tom Cruise wasn't allowed to fly the jets himself (although he probably could) but the stunts are real, with absolutely minimal CGI.

Making a sequel to one of the most famous movies of all time is no small task, but Maverick is an excellent blend of paying homage to the original (with some familiar faces popping up) and telling its own story. Director Joseph Kosinski has remarkably done it twice, also leading Tron:Legacy the sequel to 80's classic Tron .

If you need something to fill the time until the 22nd then why not try something a bit more unusual with Adam Sandler's Spider-infused sci-fi , also on Netflix ?

Top Gun: Maverick

It was an intimate cocktail party. Tom Cruise wore a cheerful smile so I couldn’t resist the opportunity to test it. “For someone who’s just been fired, you look very happy,” I said. “Sumner Redstone figured you would be angry by the press release.”

“I’m not really fire-able, if that’s even a word,” Cruise replied, his smile intact. “Besides, prods from CEOs never anger me.”

’Top Gun: Maverick’ From Cannes To Theaters – Deadline’s Complete Coverage

The media briefly fed on the studio press release, but as it turned out, Redstone and Paramount went into retreat mode within a week. Paramount’s long-standing deal with Cruise’s production company had elapsed a month earlier, but the CEO forgot to check his facts before issuing his statement, so Cruise looked smart in ignoring the Hollywood rhetoric (details below).

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem' Shockingly Slays Way To No. 4 In Deadline's 2023 Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament

The incident took place 15 years ago, but I was reminded of it this week as Cruise was again winning some important battles on his latest, much delayed, movie. Top Gun: Maverick would be destined to “own” Memorial Day weekend with a guaranteed, much extended theatrical run pre-streaming. In addition, two further Mission: Impossible sequels were positioned for lavish takeoffs.

With the New York Times christening him “The Last Movie Star,” Cruise’s four-day opening in North America may reach $100 million in 4,732 locations and perhaps hit $200 million internationally.

So that cheerful smile was still implanted on Cruise’s youthful 59-year-old face last week as he skillfully leveraged his simultaneous publicity blast-offs, one from the zealously self-protective Cannes Film Festival, the other from the British Royal Family. This was an historic PR coup: With war jitters raging, the startling image of eight fighter jets streaming red, white and blue across the Euro sky seemed at once defiant and disturbing.

Cruise’s promotional perils over the years have been matched by the physical stunts that he has orchestrated in defining his past films; his death-defying mountain climbs in M:I – 2 likely worried his studio and insurance carriers more than his feats on Top Gun: Maverick . All represented well-calculated adventures in Cruise Control, designed to nurture his continuum of pre-ordained tentpoles.

Mission: Impossible 2

Also reflected in Cruise’s pursuit of peril has been his idiosyncratic choice of roles, both starring and supporting: Tropic Thunder, Magnolia, Born on the Fourth of July, Rain Man , etc. “His filmmaking friends understand that Cruise gets more excited about playing assholes than heroes,” says a director who has worked with him but doesn’t want to be quoted. “No other star has the guts to satirize both studio chiefs and porn freaks.”

Once he has signed on, Cruise is dauntless about seeing them through, he adds.

On Rain Man , Cruise remained committed to a challenging script even though filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Sidney Pollack and Martin Brest had all committed then backed out. Barry Levinson finally directed the award-winning film, in which Cruise played the younger brother of a severely autistic Dustin Hoffman, linked together on an emotional cross-country journey. In Jerry Maguire , Cruise was cast as a ruthless hustler who was unrelentingly chasing the big bucks, but Cruise turned him into an empathetic figure.

There were also failed ventures, such as Cocktail, Vanilla Sky or The Mummy .

A decade ago, when Cruise and his long-term manager Paula Wagner took control of United Artists, they had the option of pursuing the tentpole route or a more demanding slate. They took the latter path, marshalling a political thriller titled Lions For Lambs . with Robert Redford directing Cruise and Meryl Streep. The ill-fated project ran into a recession, a writers’ strike and financing setbacks for MGM, UA’s parent company. After a succession of disappointments, Cruise seemed grateful to return to the Mission franchise.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Review: Tom Cruise Is Back Soaring In What May Be The Role Of His Career

What will be his future scenario? The Top Gun: Maverick launch demonstrated anew his skill at commanding the younger movie audience — the Mission films alone have totaled $3.6 billion in global box office. But the present challenges are real: The army of teenagers who liked Top Gun are pushing 50 now, a difficult demo to conquer.

Surveys indicate that more than half of the 45-and-over crowd haven’t been to a movie in over a year compared with 20% of the 18-24 demo. Cruise’s battle to gain a 45-day-plus window for theatrical release thus will likely prove pivotal — the older audience waits for reviews and word-of-mouth.

So will Cruise ever, in fact, be “fired”? There were conflicting reports 15 years ago over what precipitated Sumner Redstone’s outburst. One of his top aides confided to me that his boss had become grumpy about first-dollar gross deals in general. Why should select stars have major paydays before the studio had recouped?

I finally asked Redstone directly two or three weeks later, when we were dining at Dan Tana’s restaurant. “Why did you aim your rant at Cruise?” I asked. “Under his deal he took no money up front. Not even scale?”

“I understand all that,” the CEO snapped. “I’m closing a new deal with him next week. Same terms.”

“Good. Then you’re biting the bullet, right?”

Redstone grunted. “He is still overpaid. And I can still fire him.”

What’s on TV This Week: Emmy Awards and ‘Fargo’

The television awards show that was postponed from 2023 airs on Fox, and the FX drama wraps up its season.

A man wearing a cowboy hat.

By Shivani Gonzalez

Between network, cable and streaming, the modern television landscape is a vast one. Here are some of the shows, specials and movies coming to TV this week, Jan. 15-21. Details and times are subject to change.

EMMY AWARDS 8 p.m. on Fox. This awards show was postponed from the fall because of actor and writer strikes, and now it is finally time for the television academy to hand out awards (by way of presenters including Jon Hamm, Quinta Brunson and Pedro Pascal). Because this is the 75th annual ceremony, distinguished shows from the past — “Cheers,” “All in the Family,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Game of Thrones,” among others — will be celebrated with homages and cast reunions. It is looking like it will be a big night for “Succession,” whose 27 nominations are the most of any show. Anthony Anderson will host.

TOP GUN (1986) 8 p.m. on Paramount. Since the 2022 remake of this film didn’t take home the only award it was nominated for at this year’s Golden Globes, maybe it’s time to revisit the original. Tom Cruise stars as Maverick (his pilot name), an arrogant and reckless fighter pilot who is sent to Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School, where he develops an enemy (Iceman; Val Kilmer) and a crush (Kelly McGillis). “The snappily edited sequences of battle and mock battle sweep us in and out of the cockpit,” Walter Goodman wrote i n his review for The New York Times . “You can’t always be sure exactly what’s going on, but it’s exciting anyhow.”

FARGO 10 p.m. on FX. This season of the anthology show, named after the 1990s movie, took it back to the basics with Minnesota and North Dakota settings. Jon Hamm stars as Sheriff Roy Tillman, who has been searching for Dot Lyon, a housewife with a mysterious past. This week’s show is the season finale and the penultimate episode left lots of things in the air, so here’s to hoping all the loose ends get tied up.

CHICAGO MED, CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO PD starting at 8 p.m. on NBC. All three of these shows, which exist in the same universe — and were all created by Dick Wolf, of “Law and Order” fame — are back for their ninth, 12th and 11th seasons. Each show focuses on the lives and workplaces of essential workers in Chicago.

LAW & ORDER, LAW & ORDER: S.V.U. and LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME starting at 8 p.m. on NBC. Though the original “Law & Order” took a hiatus from 2010 to 2021, it is back in full force for its 23rd season, along with the two spinoffs that are beginning their 25th season (“S.V.U.”) and fourth season (“Organized Crime”). Get ready for all the fictional crime your heart desires because the new episodes of each show in this franchise are airing back to back.

NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY DEBATE 9 p.m. on ABC. Though it’s not clear who will be participating in this debate, Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor, won’t be; he dropped out of the race last week. To qualify for the debate, set to be held at Saint Anselm College, candidates have to finish in the top three in the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 15 or receive at least 10 percent in either two Republican primary voters polls or at least 10 percent in two New Hampshire Republican primary voters polls.

REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER 10 p.m. on HBO. Hosted by Bill Maher, this show usually brings together three panelists from various points on the political spectrum, who debate current events. It is back for its 22nd season., and the first episode will feature Andrew Sullivan, the former editor of The New Republic; Governor Gavin Newsom of California; and the MSNBC journalist Alex Wagner.

TWILIGHT MARATHON starting at 1 p.m. on E! If you move past the creepy animatronic-looking toddler Renesmee, Jacob imprinting on Renesmee, the horribly traumatic birth season or anything dealing with the extremely implausible logistics related to anything in these films, reliving the glory of this franchise isn’t the worst thing you could do with your Saturday afternoon. Kristen Stewart plays Bella Swan, and Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner embody Edward Cullen and Jacob Black. “It turns out that there’s something to be said about watching these two lovebirds tap into their inner monsters,” Manohla Dargis wrote in her Times review of the final film . “It’s bloody good fun while it lasts.”

THE WOMAN IN THE WALL 9 p.m. on Showtime. This show, which first aired in Britain, follows Lorna Brady (played by Ruth Wilson) as she wakes up and finds a dead woman in her house — and has to question everything to figure out who this woman is and whether she is responsible for the murder, though she has no recollection of it. Daryl McCormack plays Detective Colman Akande, who is investigating Lorna for a different crime.

What to watch this weekend on all your favorite streaming services.

Another big week of new streaming content we can’t hope to possibly keep up with, especially as it gets lovely and warm outside. May is upon us and with it beautiful weather and a bunch of new shows and movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video and more.

Let’s dive right in!

Be sure to let me know if there’s something I missed on Twitter or Facebook . Check out last week’s streaming guide here :

Alright, onto this week’s guide!

We’ll kick things off with the plethora of new streaming options out this week and weekend, starting with . . . .

The Idea Of You (May 2nd on Amazon Prime Video)

tom cruise films on tv this week

The Best Gaming Mouse That’ll Improve Your Aim

I really like Anne Hathaway, but I’ll be honest that this movie looks so far from my cup of tea it’s not even funny. But if romantic dramedies are your thing, then this story of a middle-aged woman falling for a 24-year-old lead singer of a popular boy band might be for you. Hathaway may be “middle-aged” but she’s absolutely gorgeous.

The Veil (Tuesdays on Hulu)

This international thriller looks kind of interesting, and it’s nice to see Elisabeth Moss in a show that isn’t Handmaid’s Tale, but it is not doing great with critics or audiences (45% and 56% respectively). That’s a shame! There aren’t enough good new spy thrillers out there!

The Contestant (May 2nd on Hulu)

A documentary about a Japanese man who, in 1998, does a contest where he’s forced to live alone in his apartment off whatever he can win from mail-in contests. Unknown to the man, his entire experience is broadcast to the nation. Reality TV at its most cynical, basically. This looks fascinating.

Star Wars Visions Season 1 (May 4th on Hulu)

Star Wars Visions isn’t new, but it’s new to Hulu and it’s great. 9 different anime shorts set in a galaxy far, far away from seven different Japanese studios. Just one of the May the Fourth offerings this weekend.

Star Wars: Tales Of The Empire (May 4th on Disney+)

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is a brand new animated series that features a young Morgan Elsbeth on her path toward vengeance and former Jedi Barriss Offee as the two find themselves deeper and deeper on the road to the Dark Side.

Hacks (Thursdays on Max)

The third season of the popular HBO / Max series returns with great critic scores, though I’ve never seen the first two.

Scrublands (Thursdays on AMC+)

You’ll recognize Luke Arnold from Black Sails. He stars in this four-part miniseries about an investigative journalist looking into a bizarre murder in a small Australian town in which a priest allegedly gunned down five his parishioners. Looks fantastic.

Unfrosted (May 3rd on Netflix)

Jerry Seinfeld directs this story of Pop Tarts, starring a star-studded cast and garnering the sort of lukewarm reviews you might read if you were reviewing actual Pop Tarts.

The Tattooist Of Auschwitz (May 2nd on Peacock)

Harvey Keitel and Melanie Lynskey star in this historical drama about one man’s survival in the Auschwitz death camp looks absolutely terrific. This is a six-part limited series based on the book by Heather Morris.

What’s Ongoing

I’ve been absolutely obsessed with Line Of Duty on Prime Video lately (it’s on Hulu / Britbox as well) so I’m not caught up on a lot of these, but here’s everything else currently airing that’s on my radar at the moment:

  • The Sympathizer is a Vietnam-era spy show about a Viet Cong operative who infiltrates the South Vietnamese army and eventually comes to the United States, starring Robert Downey Jr. airing every Sunday on HBO / Max.
  • Sugar on Apple TV+ stars Colin Farrell as a private detective in a neo-noir missing persons case. New episodes come out each Friday.
  • Under the Bridge on Hulu is a true story looking into the murder of a teen girl in British Columbia and the teen girls accused of her murder. New episodes air on Wednesdays.
  • Star Trek: Discovery’s fifth season is airing every Thursday on Paramount+. I’m behind on all things Star Trek, truth be told.
  • A Gentleman in Moscow on Paramount+ starring Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, about a Russian aristocrat under house arrest following the Soviet Revolution. New episodes come out on Sundays.
  • X-Men 97 on Disney+ brings back the classic, vintage feel of the old X-Men series. It continues airing on Wednesdays and really is a lot of fun.

In Theaters

This may be a streaming guide but I always try to post one or two theatrical releases as well because going to the movies is awesome.

The Fall Guy

This looks like the perfect summer blockbuster to just have fun with. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt is about as perfect a pairing as I can think of, and this story of a stuntman on a mission looks like a blast.

Further reading from your humble guide:

  • Here’s my review of Baby Reindeer, the best new series on Netflix.
  • Outlander has returned to Netflix with its sixth season.
  • One of my favorite Robin Williams movies is also now on Netflix.
  • The first Cobra Kai Season 6 trailer is here, along with three release dates.

And don’t forget to check out last weekend’s guide for whatever you may have missed!

The 10 Best Movies and TV Shows to Watch This Weekend

Portrait of Savannah Salazar

If my Twitter feed is any indication of the world at large, the whole planet is chomping at the bit to see Luca Guadagnino’s Zendaya-starring sexy tennis movie. That’s probably not the case, but Challengers has been getting great buzz anyway. Why wouldn’t it? Most mainstream movies lately have felt so much more sterile than hot — pretty people passionately making out is exactly what we need this season! Speaking of which: There’s also that Sydney Sweeney–Glen Powell rom-com hitting Netflix this weekend, if you need double the oomph. But what if you, for some weird reason, want to watch something that doesn’t have young people kissing on the lips? Well then, here’s a handful of other offerings (some of which are even PG) that’s streaming this weekend.

Featured Presentations

. challengers.

Springtime is for Zendaya. Hot off of Dune: Part Two , she’s leading director Luca Guadagnino and writer Justin Kuritzkes ’s sexy tennis drama as Tashi Donaldson, a rising star who burns out after sustaining a career-ending injury. Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor join her to create the film’s unofficial throuple (Faist plays her husband-pupil and O’Connor is her rugged ex-boyfriend). It’s fun, it’s sweaty, it’s sexy — and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score just slays. It’s an awesome time at the movies.

. We’re Here season 4

A reality show with a bit of Queer Eye ’s sensibilities, We’re Here brings RuPaul’s Drag Race drag queens to mostly rural and more conservative cities across America to uplift their queer communities. After three seasons with Bob the Drag Queen, Shangela, and Eureka, the new season of We’re Here is adding new hosts Sasha Velour, Jaida Essence Hall, Priyanka, and Latrice Royale as they visit Tennessee and Oklahoma.

. Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story

Split into four episodes, The Bon Jovi Story is exactly that: a Bon Jovi documentary. All the band members, past and present, including front man Jon Bon Jovi, come together to discuss their journey. It seems like typical nostalgia fodder with a few extra treats for fans from unreleased demos and personal footage.

. Dead Boy Detectives

Dead Boy Detectives has that unmistakable Netflix sheen that lets it perfectly sit next to shows like The Umbrella Academy and The Sandman . (As it happens, this new series is adapted from a Neil Gaiman comic and set in The Sandman universe, so that also helps explain it.) Our titular detectives are a pair of ghosts (George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri) who, instead of going to the afterlife, stay behind on earth and solve paranormal mysteries with the help of a living medium (Kassius Nelson).

With the Sonic films doing pretty well, Paramount is naturally expanding the Sonic cinematic universe. Next on the docket is Knuckles (Idris Elba), the tough-as-nails echidna who we last met in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 . Now he’s getting his own television show as he teams up with Adam Pally’s sheriff, Wade Whipple.

Lights, Camera

A surprise drop from Peacock, ACTION is a new docuseries from The Fall Guy director David Leitch and producer Kelly McCormick as it chronicles the incredible stunts and performers behind The Fall Guy . Be sure to check out Bilge Ebiri’s piece on the film’s stunt team. Read more here .

Back in Theaters

That’s right, we can see Sigourney Weaver kick alien ass on the big screen again! Ridley Scott’s influential sci-fi flick is celebrating its 45th anniversary in theaters this weekend. Now if only we can get Weaver’s Ripley and Alien back at Disney World …

Finally Streaming

From director Lila Avilés comes a lovely and bittersweet story of a young girl as she and her family celebrate her ill father’s last birthday. After a brief run in theaters, Tótem will exclusively be on the Criterion Channel, so you can dive into Avilés’s beautiful little drama at home.

The One-Sentence Review

Anyone But You

By Bilge Ebiri

“That is perhaps the most refreshing thing about Anyone But You : Everybody gets to be horny.” ( Read More .)

Double feature, 7 days in hell.

If you’re looking for another tennis movie with two hot guys fighting it out on the court this weekend, then look no further. In the mockumentary 7 Days in Hell , Andy Samberg and Kit Harington (in probably his best role ever) hilariously duke it out during the longest tennis match in history. Samberg plays the golden-haired bad boy (and adopted son of the Williams family), and Harington becomes his foil, an uptight and stressed-out British boy. Look out for talking-head cameos from Serena Williams, Fred Armisen, Lena Dunham, Jon Hamm, David Copperfield, and more.

“idea was better than the execution”: tom cruise’s $223m vampire movie key scene candidly reflected on by vfx director.

One key moment from Tom Cruise's Interview With The Vampire adaptation leaves VFX director Robert Legato wishing he'd tried a different approach.

  • VFX director Robert Legato admits mistakes in CGI and lighting techniques used in an Interview With The Vampire scene breakdown.
  • Practical effects and digital VFX were combined in the movie to bring the living dead cast and key set pieces to life.
  • Despite critical acclaim, Legato reflects on how he would handle the movie differently with modern technology and more experience.

Nearly 30 years after the movie hit theaters, VFX director Robert Legato candidly reflects on a specific moment from Tom Cruise's Interview With The Vampire adaptation. The 1994 adaptation of Anne Rice's iconic gothic horror novel starred Brad Pitt as the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac, whose life in 18th century New Orleans is turned upside down upon meeting the charismatic Lestat de Lioncourt (Cruise), who transforms him into a bloodthirsty creature of the night. Interview With The Vampire is celebrated as both a critical and financial hit, earning accolades and major award nominations.

On Corridor Crew 's latest installment of "VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGI", Legato broke down one of Interview with the Vampire 's major scenes.

Looking back on his first feature, the group looked back on the moment Louis took his revenge on the Paris vampire coven and Claudia's (Kirsten Dunst) demise. Legato was quick to admit he'd wished he'd tried different techniques, from highlighting a poor CGI burning skeleton, to how he executed a mid-sequence lighting change:

I love film fire stuff, and in dailies, they're like "Ah, you did a beautiful job!" It's like, "Oh, it's fire. It's hard to beat"... There's a bad CG shot in here, by the way. That's bad. The idea was better than the execution... This is the shot where I had to hide a lighting change in the way I operated the shot. So this is the shot I did — It's a miniature set, and then I tilt up here on purpose to now see the organ. Now, I've changed the lighting below so that when I tilt back down it feels like it's the same lighting scheme, but it's all a different re-light. Originally, it was all just pulled straight back, and I can't hide the s---ty lighting that look good here, but doesn't look good there.

How Do Interview With The Vampire 's Movie VFX Compare To The TV Series?

Under the leadership of visual effects legend Stan Winston, Legato, and other VFX artists set out to bring Interview With The Vampire to the big screen , uniting to create both key set pieces and the smaller, more detail-heavy effects on the film's living dead cast themselves. From extreme techniques to capture individual veins to a blend of miniatures and models for property destruction and gruesome demise. Despite these practical elements, digital VFX was carefully incorporated to enhance moments both personal and grandiose, such as the careful additions of blood spilling and roaring fires that Legato mentioned above.

Interview With The Vampire: The Movie's Biggest Changes To The Book

While 28 years had passed between adaptations, AMC's own Interview With A Vampir e has also boasted its own celebrated VFX work, as season 1, episode 3, "Is My Very Nature That of the Devil", received a Hollywood Professionals Association Award nomination for its visual effects work. The TV series had to navigate filming during the COVID-19 pandemic while also working with expensive historical sets and props that could not be damaged. As such, the show employed digital effects alongside solid " Blood puddles " and even creatives from the original movie to bring Rice's story to the small screen.

As one of the most beloved vampire tales in pop culture, Interview With The Vampire will always have a place in audience's hearts, be it the classic 1994 movie or its modern reimagining. With the movie having received such acclaim at the time, it may be surprising to hear Legato speak so critically of his work. However, with Legato offering an honest reflection on one of his earliest jobs, many may wonder how he would handle the movie differently with his greater experience and newer technology.

1994's Interview With The Vampire is available to stream on Paramount+, while season 2 of the TV series will premiere on May 12 on AMC.

Based on Anne Rice's 1976 novel, Interview with the Vampire tells the story of two vampires, Lestat and Louis, and their complicated relationship after Lestat turns Louis in 1791. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt star as Lestat and Louis respectively, with a cast that includes Kirsten Dunst as Claudia, the two men's young charge who Lestat also turns in an attempt to keep a disillusioned Louis from leaving. Christian Slayter rounds out the cast as Daniel Molloy, a reporter to who Louis tells his story in the mid-1990s.
