southern nevada travel survey

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada is asking for input for its 2023 Household Travel Survey.

The agency said those who complete the survey could receive gift certificates valued up to $40.

Over the next couple of months, the RTC said it hopes to recruit about 6,000 households to participate.

"This survey is a valuable community transportation tool that will give us feedback about the places people travel, the ways they get there, and the challenges they may experience," said RTC CEO M.J. Maynard. "Our residents and families matter and their input will help us plan and fund future transportation projects that reflect common travel patterns and make getting around easier."

The RTC said all information is confidential and invidual responses won't be released.

HOW TO WATCH

RTC conducting survey to improve Southern Nevada travel

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - Every 10 years the Regional Transportation Commission conducts a household travel survey.

The goal is to collect information on people’s travel patterns that are then used to see where changes are needed to improve travel for drivers. About 6,000 households receive a letter to participate.

“This is really our community’s opportunity to participate in transportation planning at the ground level,” said RTC director of planning Andrew Kjellman.

RTC is collecting information on where people are going, the time they went, and modes of transportation - such as did they walk, drive or take a bus and if they encountered any challenges along the way.

All of southern Nevada including urban areas, all of the cities and then all the way up to Mesquite, Laughlin and Boulder City are included in the survey

“We take all that information, we combine it with other answers we receive, and it really helps inform all future funding and transportation planning decisions,” said Kjellman.

RTC said this year’s survey is important as it is the first study since COVID-19, and many are now working remotely.

“We know travel behaviors have changed after the pandemic and so this is our chance to see how exactly they have changed,” said Kjellman.

You are only asked to log one day of travel information once a week for two months.

Everything is logged through an app that you can access on your phone, or through their website.

For more information on the survey, go to RTC’s website.

RTC offering incentive to residents who help out with 2023 Household Travel Survey (KSNV)

Las Vegas (KSNV) — The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) is asking Southern Nevada residents to help shape the future of transportation while earning a little extra cash.

The 2023 Household Travel Survey looks to gather input on roadways, public transit, walking, and cycling throughout the valley.

As a bonus for those who complete the survey, the RTC will offer a gift certificate valued at up to $40.

“This survey is a valuable community transportation tool that will give us feedback about the places people travel, the ways they get there, the challenges they may experience, and much more,” said M.J. Maynard, CEO of the RTC.

“Our residents and families matter and their input will help us plan and fund future transportation projects that reflect common travel patterns and make getting around easier.”

Over the next few months, the RTC looks to recruit almost 6,000 random households throughout the valley to participate. Those chosen will receive a mailed invitation letter with an access code and details on how to participate in the survey.

According to RTC, the results will be used to map the travel patterns of our area, providing a better understanding of how, when, and where people travel. All information collected is confidential, and individual responses will not be released.

High Capacity Transit (HCT) provides faster, more frequent and convenient service for passengers on high demand routes. HCT includes Light Rail (LRT), Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), which is light rail-like service provided with buses, and Rapid Bus, which consists of a mix of transit measures. HCT also generates economic development for the region and along the corridors where it operates. On Board could build approximately 200 miles of HCT in Southern Nevada on 18 different routes over 10-20 years.

southern nevada travel survey

  • Charleston Boulevard (LRT or BRT)
  • Cross-Valley Connector (BRT or LRT on Boulder Highway-Flamingo-Decatur]
  • North 5 th  Street (BRT or LRT)
  • 6 Rapid Bus Lines (Rancho, Craig, Nellis, Eastern, Sunset, Paradise)
  • Craig Road BRT
  • Eastern Avenue BRT
  • 6 Rapid Bus Lines (Jones/Rainbow, Tropicana/MLK, Nellis/Stephanie, North Las Vegas Blvd, South Las Vegas Blvd.)
  • Resort Corridor rail-based transit (Euro Tram) between Downtown Las Vegas and McCarran Intl Airport via the Strip

As Southern Nevada continues to grow, there will be a need for more robust transit services. On Board seeks to increase service in the region in line with this growth and expand service to new areas, with service tailored to match local needs and demands. This will mean frequent service for longer hours in many areas, as well as new approaches such as on-demand services and partnerships with companies like Uber and Lyft.

On Board’s goal is to expand transit service so that 75% of the region’s residents are within a ½ mile of bus service, and 100% of the region will have access to some type of public transportation service.

southern nevada travel survey

  • Develop regional service goals
  • Expand frequent transit network in high demand areas
  • Implement frequency and operating hours improvements on existing service.
  • Rideshare partnerships in first mile/last mile connections to transit in suburban areas
  • Micro-circulator zones with suburban express connectors to high frequency service or major transit hubs
  • Rideshare partnership for non-suburban first mile/last mile services
  • Develop Service buy-up options
  • Transit fare capping program
  • Reduced fare program for students

On Board emphasizes safety and security as core values for RTC’s operations and planning. The plan calls for additional lighting, shelters, and other safety features for pedestrians and transit users and increases the overall presence of security personnel. On Board also recommends implementing active monitoring of cameras on buses and at stops, and developing intelligent systems to reduce potential security incidents. The plan will also identify car crash hot spots and look for ways to reduce them.

southern nevada travel survey

  • Traffic crash review and prevention program
  • Bus stop safety & security improvements
  • Accelerate efforts to move bus stops back from fast-moving traffic
  • Install bollards at high-volume stops with fast-moving traffic
  • Install emergency blue Light Call Boxes at High Risk Stop Locations
  • Utilize established safety and crime-prevention design strategies on transit facilities
  • On-bus security enhancements & officer presence
  • Expand transit watch program
  • Ensure appropriate treatment of transit-related criminal activity
  • Develop technology-based active security monitoring at bus stops

On Board will make it easier and safer to walk and ride bikes in Southern Nevada. The plan recommends building “Complete Streets” that meet the needs of all types of travelers including people who walk, ride bikes, take the bus, and drive. On Board will provide features like shade, landscaping, and seating to make trips more comfortable. The plan also includes the creation of mobility hubs, or centers to combine several transportation options and provide a neighborhood gathering space for commercial and residential life.

southern nevada travel survey

  • Implement expanded Complete Streets program
  • Implement a walkability infrastructure and education program
  • Improve amenities at bus stops
  • Make crosswalk improvements along major corridors
  • Develop mid-block pedestrian crossings at long block segments and in high-traffic areas
  • Develop regional mobility hubs
  • Develop neighborhood mobility hubs

While the RTC currently provides services targeted to seniors, veterans and people with disabilities, On Board will go beyond existing programs to expand transportation services to more areas so they can serve more people. Recommendations include expanding service areas, more on-demand options and new technologies to make it easier to plan, book and pay for trips.

southern nevada travel survey

  • Double Silver STAR service for seniors
  • Double Flexible Demand Response (FDR) service areas for seniors
  • Double service for veterans
  • Provide full regional coverage for people with disabilities (Paratransit)
  • Provide app-based reservations and fare payment for dedicated services
  • Provide app-based vehicle tracking for dedicated services

On Board will improve connections to major regional destinations including McCarran International Airport as well as large job centers and event venues. These routes will be designed to connect residents and visitors directly to important locations using a combination of express bus routes, commuter services, and game day/event shuttles.

southern nevada travel survey

  • Implement Regional Express Routes to Resort Corridor or Downtown
  • Develop Park and Ride Lots with Express Service Connections to Major Destinations
  • Extend SDX Route to Airport
  • Develop Airport Mobility Hub (TIBP: McCarran Multimodal Transportation Center)
  • Provide Game Day and Major Event Shuttles

Over 30% of the region’s jobs are along the “Resort Corridor.” A large proportion of employees who work at the resorts must enter and exit through “back-of-house” entrances that are not well served by transit. On Board will develop routes and public transit services that operate directly to and from the Resort Corridor, with short waits and convenient and reliable service to employee entrances.

southern nevada travel survey

  • Develop Express Shuttles to Resort Corridor and Downtown Mobility Hubs
  • Develop Direct Service Shuttles to “Back of House” Employee Entrances
  • Construct Pedestrian Connections for Grade-Separated “Back of House” Locations on West Side of Strip
  • Develop Mobility Hubs Focused on Resort Corridor & Downtown Connections

As technology changes transportation, RTC will seek out the most promising innovations to help move Southern Nevada. On Board projects will make it easier to plan, book and pay for trips including options like real-time bus arrival information and expanded smart phone programs to pay for and plan trips on transit, rideshare, bikeshare, and other new services. On Board also proposes expanding our use of clean fuel technologies, including a public electric vehicle charging network, and transitioning RTC’s buses to an all-electric transit fleet.

southern nevada travel survey

  • Provide real-time arrival information at major transit stops
  • Improve payment options and information sharing
  • Implement “Mobility as a Service” program
  • Develop public solar electric vehicle charging network
  • Shift to electric transit vehicles
  • Expand solar charging for RTC’s transit vehicles and facilities
  • Expand Travel Demand Management (TDM) programs
  • Evolve the region’s advanced traffic management system
  • Implement autonomous vehicles as technology permits (10+ years)
  • Monitor and incorporate emerging transportation technologies and update road design as needed
