it was very confuse and afraid when we arrived nobody could give us info what to do next (as per info when we talk to Europamundo that wil have welcome at the aiirport and when we arrived to the hotel we are going yo received a program of hours, places and what will be next, we have no idea the tour-radar will be our guide. during Madrid time was very goid but when we arrived to Barcelona the last day we went with the group but was no arrengment to bring us back to the hotel wich we has to pay 35 euros for a taxi to get back on our owen. ( this was the expierence not only ours but also a couple with a child, 2 other single persons and my friend, her husband and my husband and I. . Comunicacion between Europamundo and the 3rd parties left us in the middle of unknown city totaly on our own to get back to the hotel.

Grand Tour of Spain (Small Group)
The trip was nicely organized and we really appreciate it. The itinerary is well balanced between free time and guided visits. Excellent tour guide Santiago, very friendly, knowledgeable, personable. Thank you for a memorable and enjoyable tour.
Madrid and Barcelona
Stay arrangements were very good. Guides did their best. But we couldn’t go inside some of the places like Royal palace and Egyptian temple in Madrid. So is the case in Barcelona

Andalucia & Toledo, 5 days on Tuesdays
Great Trip, We felt like the trip had enough daily experiences mixed with enough free time. Our Guide and Driver were the best! Enjoyed the entire week, the only thing we would change is a few of the hotel dinners were not for us. I would travel again with VPT based on this experience and would request Miguel and Gabriel guide us along. James B

Andalusia with Cordoba, Costa del Sol and Toledo from Madrid
Excellent. We had rain throughout our tour but our tour guide, Carmen was wonderful. She made our tour easy and comfortable. She made sure to have English speaking local guide for us who do not speak Spanish. Our tour bus driver had amazing driving skills.

Spanish Delights, 7 days
It was a lot of time on the tour bus and we were not given the specific itinerary in advance (just the day before we were told when we would be leaving). The tour guide Ophelia was very friendly and helpful. The hotels and cities we stayed in were nice. The dinners were alright.
Discovery of Spain - 10 days
Wonderful experience
Absolutely Spain
Time was short in Barcelona. We ran… some hotels lack cleanliness. But overall great trip and good value. Good guides and driver. Excellent tpur compliance
Andalusia with Costa del Sol and Toledo from Madrid
Overall I was very happy with the Tour. The initial pick up point is a little tricky to locate especially as you have to be there so early and it's still dark. It could definitely use a better description to get there. Marina was a fabulous travel guide. She was friendly, helpful, funny and very organised. This meant the tour ran very smoothly. I found the majority of the accommodation we stayed at very clean, large, comfortable and in convenient locations. Some of the dinners were a little uninteresting, but generally they were very good and found the buffet breakfasts filled me for the day. The itinerary was good, but some of the days involved a lot of driving, the price you pay for wanting to cover such a big area in such a small amount of time. Being on a bus with no WIFI made the journey feel even longer. All of the local guides were fabulous! Their knowledge was outstanding and they all delivered the English part of the explanations very well. Having to say everything in Spanish and English does however slow things down, meaning less time to see more. I definitely recommend seeing the Flamenco show, it was fantastic! I skipped the rest of the optionals as I wanted to explore things on my own at a different pace. I'm not sure I would go on an organised bus tour again, as I'm not sure I'm made for travelling the long distances on buses, but for people who enjoy a bus tour and have limited time to explore Spain, this tour is definitely a good option.
From Madrid to Barcelona
For my first tour. I really enjoyed the tour. Ofelia was our tour guide and she was with us the whole time if we needed anything. It was nice having someone there with us. We really enjoyed the places that were in the itinerary and the overall experience. I would highly recommend this tour. I felt the hotels at each location were good. I would recommend doing the flamenco shows. Con: The only thing that could have been better was the food, but all the activities and accommodations were great, which made up for it.
Spanish Ring ( 11 days )
Great tour is what I can say !
What people love about Spain Tours from Madrid
This was the best tour I have done. Our host guide was amazing and put so much energy into every second she spent with us. We saw so many extras because she went above and beyond to give us the full Spanish experience. Fully recommend this tour to any one wanting to get the most out of their time in Spain.
Had a wonderful time, the tour guide was very helpful and the hotels were of good standard.

Best Spain Tours Starting From Madrid
Visit Andalusia, Barcelona and other cities in Spain
With Spain's biggest international airport, Madrid is probably the most common arrival point for most people visiting Spain. So no wonder there are so many things to do and tours of Spain that depart from Madrid.
Whether you have time for just a day trip or if you have a little longer to venture out of Madrid, you'll find something of interest on this page. These Spain tours from Madrid are the best-guided trips you can do from the capital, with tours going to all corners of the country and beyond to Portugal and Morocco .
The most popular tours from Madrid are the four- and five-day tours of Andalusia . They take in the most famous cities in Andalusia - Seville, Granada, and Cordoba - and usually fit in Toledo and Ronda too. But we're particularly fond of the four-day tour to Lisbon because they've cleverly arranged the itinerary so that you spend all three nights in the Portuguese capital, with all other cities visited either on route or as day trips from Lisbon. No need to pack and repack your bags each night!
Day Trips From Madrid
If you've only got time for a day trip from Madrid , you're probably going to want to visit one of Madrid's satellite cities: either Toledo to the south or a couple of the cities to the west: Segovia, Avila, Valle de los Caidos or El Escorial.
Alternatively, you could always venture as far as Barcelona or Seville , trips only made possible by the high-speed AVE train .
Short Tours of Andalusia From Madrid
Andalusia is Spain's most popular region, with several cities that are vital for any Spain trip situated just a couple of hours apart.
Seville is the spiritual home of flamenco and bullfighting and Andalusia's most visited city. Cordoba is not far from Seville and is home to the Mezquita, the grand mosque that was once the biggest in the world (and has now been converted into the city's cathedral), so adding this to your trip to Seville is a great way to get more out of your time.
For a slightly longer trip, you can add Ronda, the pueblo blanco that is perched over a steep ravine or Granada, home to the Alhambra.
- Two-Day Tour: Seville and Cordoba Two-Day Tour
- Three-Day Tour: Seville, Cordoba and Ronda Three-Day Tour with Costa del Sol Drop-Off
- Four-Day Tour: Seville, Toledo, Cordoba and Granada Four-Day Tour
- Five-Day Tour: Seville, Toledo, Cordoba, Ronda and Granada Five-Day Tour
Which would we recommend? The four-day Seville, Toledo, Cordoba, and Granada tour. The organizers of this tour have proportioned the four days perfectly, with half a day in Cordoba, a day and a half in Seville and a day in Granada. Then, on the way back to Madrid, stop off in Toledo for a brief look around there.
Four-Day Tour of Lisbon and Central Portugal
Travel from the capital of Spain to the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, on this three-nights-and-four days tour . The best thing about this trip (apart from the sights themselves) is that all of the accommodation is at the same place - in Lisbon.
Visit Trujillo in Spain on the way to Lisbon . Settle into your hotel and then have a guided tour of the Portuguese capital and some free time on your second day. On the third day, you will go on a day trip to Fatima, finishing up on the last day with a visit to Caceres on the way back to Madrid.
This is a perfect introduction to some of the highlights of Portugal, as well as some lesser-visited sights in Spain, without having to move your cases every evening.
This tour doesn't reach Porto , one of Portugal's real highlights, which is unsurprising considering the length of the tour.
Four-Day Tour of Barcelona and Valencia
Visit Spain's most popular city, Barcelona, as well as Valencia (the home of paella) on this four-day tour from Madrid. You'll spend a night in Valencia and two nights in Barcelona, before returning to Madrid via Zaragoza.
This tour of eastern Spain misses out Andalusia. For that, you'll need a longer tour.
Seven-Day Tour of Barcelona, Andalusia and More
Visit the best of Spain's cities: Barcelona, Seville, and Granada as well as Cordoba, Valencia, and Zaragoza in this mammoth tour of the country.
This seven-day (six-night) tour includes combines whistle-stop tours of the smaller cities with slightly longer stops in both Seville and Barcelona (where you'll spend two nights in each). If you only have a week in Spain in your life and need to see its highlights, this is the tour for you.
Accommodation is at luxury hotels and many meals are included.

10 Absolute Best Day Trips from Madrid
By: Author Laura Bronner
Posted on Last updated: February 29, 2024
From the Prado Museum to Gran Vía, Madrid has plenty to keep you busy during your visit. However, whether it’s because you have extra time or you feel the need to get out of the big city for an afternoon, there are many fantastic day trips from Madrid.
Within two hours of the Spanish capital, travelers will find incredible towns awash with Roman and Renaissance history. You can explore 1st-century aqueducts, royal palaces, and Disney-inspired castles.
Each town marks a spot in a delightful, rolling countryside where the journey is as good as the destination. Don’t want to hire a car? Don’t worry. Madrid’s high-speed trains and immersive tours will help you see the best of the surrounding region.
Even if you are only spending 3 days in Madrid , you may want to add a day to your trip to explore one of these beautiful Spanish destinations.
Getting to the Best Madrid Day Trips
The best way to explore most of Spain is by train. Spanish trains are well connected, especially from a hub as major as Madrid.
From Madrid, you can take regional trains to many of the best day trips or hop on a fast train to a major city anywhere in Spain and be there in half the time of a car.
The best place to book train travel in Spain is directly on the RENFE website . Try to book at least a few days in advance to get the best price. If you are booking last minute, you may get a better deal on Omio (even though they have a booking fee).
The second option for getting around to the best day trips from Madrid is to rent a car in Spain. You can rent them from Madrid airport when you arrive or pick one up close to downtown.
When I’m in Spain (or anywhere in Europe for that matter), I always check prices and usually find the best options on Discover Cars . They show you all of the lowest prices with rankings for each company so you know what you’re paying for.
You can select airport pickup or city center pickup. Their full coverage is always significantly cheaper than the full coverage offered by the rental car companies (but is just as comprehensive and easy to use). Check out rental prices on Discover Cars here .
The final option for exploring the outskirts of Madrid is to take a tour. You can explore tour options around Madrid using GetYourGuide or the similarly fantastic Viator for great, affordable, and locally run tour companies.
Best Day Trips from Madrid
The historic streets of Toledo create a scene that draws visitors from Madrid daily. Christian, Arab, and Jewish history, culture, art, and architecture infuse the former Spanish capital with a breathtaking aura.
These old, narrow streets, bound together like shoestrings, are a marvel to explore. Getting lost in this UNESCO World Heritage Site is merely a necessary part of the itinerary.
An hour by car, or half that by train, Toledo straddles these hilltops and gazes down at the Tagus River. Through its medieval core lies a litany of highlights. Step by step you’ll wander by (or explore) such majestic structures as the Toledo Cathedral and the Alcazar.
The former is renowned for its splendid facade, a spectacular interior, not to mention original pieces by the one El Greco. The Alcazar has an alluring blend of styles that combine the best of Moorish, Roman, and Gothic.
It’s an easy drive to get to Toledo, just 60 minutes down the A-42. There are also plenty of trains between Madrid and Toledo throughout the day.
Do you prefer to leave the logistics to others, while diving deeper into Toledo’s history? Check out this guided tour , one that also provides free time to explore on your own.
Toledo is a beautiful city and an easy day trip from Madrid.
Even for the most seasoned traveler, memories of Cuenca don’t fade. Their medieval streets, as traditional as any in Spain, are enveloped by tall sandstone townhouses fixed with fabulous wooden balconies.
The colors of the town, like the sun itself, shimmer in broad daylight and it looks down into the valley with two river gorges collide.
From below, Cuenca stands on top of the hill like candles on a cake, if the edge of the cake was a sheer cliff and not something sweet.
Built into the top part of the cliffs are the town’s famous Casas Colgadas , developed between the 15th and 18th centuries. Hugging the hill with all its might, one can head out onto the balcony and either revel or be terrified by the sheer drop.
Cuenca lies just under two hours east of Madrid by car. As you explore, you’ll see that colgadas are just part of what makes this UNESCO site special. Get about on foot to admire the Parador de Cuenca, the Spanish Museum of Abstract Art, and the cathedral.
A train to Cuenca will help save you time at only an hour long. But if you’re thinking of a guided day trip, this tour takes you to Cuenca, Devil’s Windows, and the Enchanted City .
Cuenca’s hanging houses really do look like they are teetering on the edge carved into the mountainside.
3. Valencia
The coastal city of Valencia, on the shores of the Mediterranean, may seem a little too far for a day trip. That rings true if driving in Spain is your only option.
But you can turn that almost 4-hour journey into a cruisy 2-hour trip if you jump on Spain’s high-speed rail. Better yet, settle in for one of the best weekend trips from Madrid by spending two days in Valencia .
If you’ve only got the day, head out from the Spanish capital in the morning to make sure you can see as many of the wonderful things to do in Valencia as possible. After enjoying the scenery and the convenience of the train, get about exploring one of the country’s most beautiful locations.
Here, the past combines with modern culture and amazing food. It’s also a chance to trade the city heat for a dip in the cobalt-blue waters of the Mediterranean as one of the many Valencia beaches .
Refreshed, get about experiencing Valencia’s growing street art scene along El Carmen. Dance between boutiques, retro shops, and the Lonja Silk Exchange. To save time getting around all of the different sites in one day, you may want to consider using Uber in Valencia while you’re there.
When your tummy grumbles, head to Valencia’s Central Market. In the mood for some paella? Well, you’ll be happy to know Valencia is where the famous dish was invented. If you want to know more, join this paella class before jumping on the train back to Madrid.
When you arrive in Valencia by train, you’ll arrive at one of the two Valencia train stations , Valencia Nord, pictured here, is the most beautiful of the two.
It takes less than 30 minutes to get from Madrid’s Chamartín station to the ancient streets of Segovia. Stepping off the train, head to the entrance of the Old City, where pedestrianized streets allow you to take in every drop of history.
As you wander, there’ll be one structure that continues to grasp your attention: El Acueducto. The Roman aqueduct is almost 3000ft of engineering brilliance that dates back to the 1st century. It’s arguably the most impressive Roman monument that still stands in Spain. Across its 163 arches, it reaches a height of over 90ft (28m).
The jaw-dropping, comb-like structure is as good a first impression as one town can give. But as you continue to head towards the peak of Segovia, you’ll uncover the Plaza Mayor. This happening square is the cultural centerpiece, one that’s also home to the formidable cathedral from the 1500s.
After a stop for a coffee and treat in one of Plaza Mayor’s cafe patios, head west down the thin cobblestone alleys. Soon a sense of déjà vu will appear as you see the inspiration between Sleep Beauty’s castle. This is, in fact, El Alcazar, whose garden harbors wide views of the rolling Castilian countryside.
Combine your day trip to Toledo with Segovia and Ávila into one guided tour .
The famous Aquaduct of Segovia is well worth visiting on a day trip from Madrid.
5. Ávila
Whether it’s combined with Toledo and Segovia or a standalone destination, Ávila is one of the best day trips from Madrid. The center of its province, Ávila lies beyond medieval fortress walls, over 80 imposing towers, and 2,500 turrets.
Exploring the town at street level is only part of the fun. For better perspective and views, you can wander along the top of the 11th-century, 39ft tall defensive walls. From here, you can truly appreciate how well-preserved Ávila is.
After coming back down to earth, make a beeline for Plaza Mercado Chico . Here, travelers can get a real sense of not just the past, but Ávila’s current magic.
Like Segovia’s El Alcazar, there’s a hint of Disney joy here. Dine in the square before taking in Ávila’s other major sites. These include the Basilica of San Vicente, the Mirador of the Four Posts, and the Cathedral of Ávila.
Getting to Ávila is as simple as making your way to Madrid’s Principe Pio station . The regular trains make the 1hr 40 minute journey. Alternatively, you can join a tour like this one which includes stops in Toledo and Ávila .
The city of Aranjuez has beautiful architecture and history to explore while you are visiting as a day trip from Madrid.
6. The Royal Palace of Aranjuez
One of the easiest day trips from Madrid, the Royal Palace of Aranjuez , was first established in the 16th century. The former opulent hunting lodge, known for its extravagant lawns, soon became the spring home of the Spanish Royal Family and their court.
Through the eras, the changing of kings, and a little help from damaging fires, the palace has a beautiful mix of architectural styles. Since 1931, it has been an open museum, where you can admire the brilliant facade up close, explore the embellished gardens, and wander through the luxurious chambers.
Each room tells its own story, with evidence, period furniture, and elaborate art painting a vivid portrait. Not to mention the literal portraits of former royalty that pop up throughout. Other notable highlights include the Porcelain Room, with endless porcelain tiles and chinaware. You can also explore the Hall of Mirrors, inspired by the Palace of Versailles. Lastly, the Throne Room, with obvious significance, but the magnificence of the thrown and rich decorations make it memorable.
After seeing as much as you can inside the palace, take in the Royal Gardens. Arguably the reason the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the gardens, complete with glistening fountains, flowerbeds, and statues, are a sight to behold.
When traveling to the palace, we recommend the 40-minute drive. You can otherwise take the C-3 commuter line.
Salamanca is rich with history and architecture to explore on a day trip from Madrid.
7. Salamanca
Incredible history and architecture can be found in Salamanca, similar to many of our favorite Madrid day trips. But there’s something different about this little city. The sandstone architecture certainly sets it apart. However, it’s the city’s iconic university that makes the journey worthwhile.
The 15th-century intellectual movement was in part headed by the thinking minds of the University of Salamanca, an institution established four centuries prior. Today, it’s the third oldest university on earth.
Much like the university itself, Salamanca has grown largely uninterrupted, preserving its past along the way.
Known as the Golden City, Salamanca’s eye-catching sandstone buildings such as the New and Old Cathedrals will stop you in your tracks. The Old Cathedral, from the 12th century, boasts a wonderful Romanesque design with a colorful apse, opulent chapels, and a memorable cloister.
You can continue to take in the golden buildings at the Plaza Mayor. Surrounded by three stories of endless sandstone, enjoy a little fiesta at one of the square’s cafes and restaurants.
To get here, it’s around 2 hours and 15 minutes by car. You can also jump on a train from Madrid’s Chamartín station and around in under 2 hours. With so much history to cover, join this guided walking tour to see the town’s best monuments .
The buildings in Cuenca are what makes this such a special day trip from Madrid.
8. Chinchón
A quick hour from Madrid, Chinchón is a great way to escape the capital’s busy streets and enjoy a rural side to life in Spain. Chinchón sits on the hilltops and has developed a fantastic food scene and a relaxed atmosphere.
You should begin your trip to Chinchón at its unique medieval plaza. It’s not like any we’ve mentioned prior, purely due to its circular layout.
Surrounded by shady patios, delightful buildings, and a healthy buzz of locals and travelers, indulge in the cuisine at La Repesca Casa de Vinos or La Casa del Pregonero.
Sample all the tapas, paella, and, of course, some of Chinchón’s surrounding vineyards. If you’re looking for something a bit stronger, the local spirit Anís de Chinchón dates back over 300 years.
Well-fed and hydrated, set about exploring the rest of Chinchón. Highlights include the 15th-century clock tower, impressive views from the surrounding miradores, and the Parador de Chinchón.
One hour, by car or bus from Plaza Conde Casal, it’s an easy single-day adventure. If you’re into wines, this tour gives you a taste of town along with the surrounding wine region.
The Monastery of El Escorial draws visitors from all over Spain and it is well worth visiting even if you aren’t particularly religious.
9. Monastery of El Escorial
If the Royal Palace of Aranjuez has left you searching for more royal elegance and unforgettable architecture, then the Monastery of El Escorial is the answer. Under an hour by car from Madrid, it’s an easy half-day trip from the city center.
The Monastery of El Escorial is a little bit quieter than its more famous counterpart. In that sense, you get greater value as the monastery is the largest Renaissance building on earth.
Almost 450 years old, this complex site consists of a royal residence, pantheon, library, school, hospital, and museum.
El Escorial itself is a beautiful small town on the edge of one of Spain’s most iconic royal landmarks. It’s easy to overlook, but wandering the streets of this town, trying some local cuisine, and admiring the culture is a great way to complement your monastery experience.
It’s best to arrive by car, as the train & bus journey requires several stops. However, you can visit the monastery and the Valley of the Fallen on this guided tour .
The stunning castle of Segovia is straight out of a Disney movie and you don’t want to miss seeing it up close.
10. Ribera del Duero
We’ve hinted that Madrid lies near some fantastic vineyards. With a visit to Ribera del Duero, you can forego the history and Renaissance buildings for a joyous exploration of Spanish wines.
The Ribera del Duero wine region lies two hours from downtown Madrid. A car is necessary to make this trip, although there are several wineries and tasting tours . These allow you to ditch the keys and the responsibility while ensuring you get to enjoy the region’s best drops.
But folks, it wouldn’t be Spain without some historic castles, including Peñafiel and Peñaranda de Duero castles. So if you have some spare time, go exploring the splendid countryside.

Cordoba, Spain
Explore the moorish influences and multicultural heritage of córdoba.
It may have begun life as a Roman settlement, but the Spanish city of Córdoba – in the southern province of Andalucia – first reached greatness as a Muslim stronghold and the capital of a Caliphate, and many of its Moorish influences remain to the day. Reclaimed by the Christian world during the 13th-century Spanish Reconquista, Cordoba has long been known as a multicultural melting pot and a center of Spanish intellectual life. Discover it with Tauck on a walking tour through its Jewish Quarter and a guided visit to the 8th-century Mezquita de Córdoba (La Mezquita) – once one of the world's largest mosques, and now a Roman Catholic cathedral. More than 1,200 years old, it's an iconic symbol of the city and its multicultural heritage.
El Palace Barcelona
A 20th-century classic reborn for the 21st.
Nearly a century after it opened in the heart of Barcelona near Las Ramblas – and soon became one of Spain's leading luxury hotels – the El Palace Barcelona emerges from an ambitious and comprehensive refurbishment designed to recapture the classic style and splendor of its greatest years. The hotel's public areas, presidential suites and standard rooms have been carefully restored with handmade carpets, restored antiques and exact replicas of objects such as lamps and curtains... and on the 7th floor, the romantic new Diana Garden sports more than fifty species of plants, fountains, pergolas and a pool, all inspired by the Barcelona of the 1920s.
Pintxos tasting tours
Sampling pintxos in bilbao and san sebastián.
Pintxos – the traditional tasty treats typically enjoyed as appetizers or snacks in bars throughout northern Spain and the Basque country – are so named for the "spike" (a skewer or a toothpick) that holds their ingredients to a slice of bread, and distinguishes them from their tapas cousins. You'll have opportunities to sample some of the best pintxos in town on tasting tours with local experts in Bilbao and San Sebastián.

"Traveling with Tauck was an incredible experience that truly exceeded our expectations. The hotels, food, wine, tour director and local guides were all terrific and we loved all the places we visited. You were right – San Sebastían was definitely a highlight of the trip! We were very fortunate to have sunny, comfortable weather and we really enjoyed meeting the people in our group and spending time with them. I felt so pampered and indulged and hope to go on another Tauck trip sometime in the near future. Spain Tours & Vacations
From towering cathedral spires to a shared jug of sangria, it’s passion that ties Spain together.
Passion is the constant across Spain’s diverse regions and cultures, from the twirling skirts of flamenco dancers in Seville to the tears of pilgrims arriving in Santiago de Compostela . Despite (or perhaps because of) its complicated history, Spain has produced some of the most moving art in the world – and we’re not just talking about Gaudi’s architecture and Dali’s melting clocks. Here, art isn’t just in the grand architecture and museums around the country. It’s in the jamón expertly cured by a family who has been making it for centuries, and vibrant festivals that bring whole cities together. Like its art, Spain offers something for everyone.

Culture and customs.
Spain today is made up of 17 distinct autonomous communities, a product of the region’s history as a land of diverse tribes, kingdoms, and cultures. Each has its own traditions, cuisines, and customs shaped by the extensive war, invasion, immigration, and trade that the region has seen over the past few thousand years. From the Moors to the Romans, the British to the Portuguese, modern Spain is a product of both its geographic neighbors and the far-flung lands it conquered as a colonial superpower.
Spaniards are known, perhaps above all else, for their passion – for food, politics, partying, and life in general. This is the home of vibrant fiestas, fierce independence movements, flashy flamenco, worker uprisings, and the grand architectural remnants of a lavish and bloated empire.
Roman Catholicism is deeply entrenched in society, and as such Christian holidays like Easter and Christmas are widely observed. Additionally, different patron saints are honored in regional areas throughout the year, with small cities and villages celebrating their saints with bonfires, feasts, and parades.
From visionary architects to painters, controversial film directors to literary greats, Spain has a strong creative tradition evident in Gothic cathedrals, abstract art, and surreal film.
History and government
There is evidence of human habitation in the area now known as Spain dating as far back as 32,000 years ago. Pre-historic cultures likely existed as disparate tribes across the region until the Iron Age, when emerging groups like Iberians, Celtiberians, and Greeks began to exercise more formal control over certain areas.
The Romans arrived in 206 BC and spent hundreds of years systematically conquering the region before ruling uninterrupted for almost 500 years.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, various Muslim and Christian conquerors spent the next 700 years struggling for full control of the region. The last Muslim city, Granada, fell under the control of the Christian Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon in 1492, ending the last period of Muslim rule in Spain to this day.
Spain as a global empire
The Kingdom of Spain was unified under Christian rule in 1512 and began expanding at a ferocious pace. The far-reaching colonization that saw Spain conquer land on almost every continent earned it the title of the first ‘global empire’.
With access to the natural resources and human labor extracted from its colonies, Spain continued to balloon in power and influence until the 17th century. At this point, lavish construction and out-of-control spending, as well as the growing influence of other global powers, caused the empire to stall.
By the 18th century, the Kingdom of Spain was struggling. An invasion from Napoleon’s France, royal infighting, and various successful independence movements among colonies were the final death blows delivered to the ailing empire.
20th century
The early 20th century was a tumultuous time for Spain. Between 1918 and 1920, influenza killed an estimated 250,000 people in Spain alone. The nation oscillated between monarchy and short-lived stints as a republic. Attempted coups were frequent as left-wing and right-wing struggled for power, with powerful anarchist and fascist movements emerging, often in reaction to each other.
In 1936 the right-wing Nationalists (led by military general Francisco Franco Bahamonde AKA Franco) overthrew the government in a coup. A three-year civil war began for control of the country. At least 350,000 Spaniards died during the war, which ended with Franco’s victory and ascension to the dual roles of Head of State and Commander-in-Chief. Franco controlled Spain through a rigid totalitarian regime until his death in 1975. His legacy today is mixed, notable for the brutal repression of dissenters but also for an improved economy.
After Franco’s death, Spain transitioned to a democracy, holding its first free elections in almost 40 years in 1979. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the government was controlled alternately by socialist, conservative, and populist parties.
Though power has continued to swing between conservative and socialist governance, Spain today is relatively politically stable and home to a thriving democracy.
Remarkably, centuries of Catholic supremacy and enforced cultural hegemony under Franco’s dictatorship haven’t been able to stamp out a spirit of counterculture and rebellion. In general, public engagement in social and political issues is high, and public protest is common.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you’re sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from in every part of the world.
An abundance of fresh seafood and produce, a long wine-making tradition and diverse culinary influences from the former colonies make for a vibrant food culture. You can find delicious delicacies everywhere from bars to restaurants, cafes, street fiestas, and markets across the country. Savor the cuisines of Northern Spain on our 10 day Northern Spain Real Food Adventure or taste your way through two countries on our 17 day Spain & Portugal Real Food Adventure.
Plant-based dining in Spain
Vegetarians certainly won’t go hungry in Spain. And while vegans might need to do a little detective work, there’s still a lot on offer if you know where to look.
Vegetarian options can be found in the vast majority of bars, restaurants, cafes, and markets. Vegan travelers will find major cities like Madrid and Barcelona are packed with vegan-friendly (and just straight-up vegan) restaurants. Outside of the big cities, it starts to get a little trickier. The safest option is to make the local market your first port of call in each destination to stock up on fresh fruit, vegetables, and bread. In eateries, vegans should keep an eye out for gazpacho (tomato soup), crema de verduras (vegetable soup), and basic ensaladas (salads) which are likely to be vegan. To be sure they won’t come served with meat on top (which can happen even when it isn’t listed as an ingredient) order them ‘sin jamon y sin huevo’ – without ham or eggs.
Your local leader will be able to help you navigate the menu and find plant-based dining options.
Must-try dishes and drinks in Spain
- Paella This delectable rice dish is served throughout Spain and comes in many different ways. The mixed version (with chorizo, mussels, and prawns) is the most popular internationally, but if we have to recommend just one it’s got to be the original Valencian version – with rabbit, chicken, and butter beans.
- Albondigas This tapas staple of meatballs swimming in a spicy tomato sauce is a classic. Typically made from a combination of veal and pork mince, the dish is simple to make and even easier to eat, particularly when washed down with a glass of tempranillo.
- Croquettes Another tapas favorite, this time one that vegetarians can easily get behind. These delightful little balls of fried bechamel come with a number of fillings, from beef and ham to broccoli and goat’s cheese.
- Sangria Jugs filled with chunks of apple, lemon, and orange in chilled red wine are the perfect accompaniment to a golden Spanish sunset. Sangria is a well-known ticket to extended late-night revelry, so don’t say we didn’t warn you.
- Calamares a la Romana This dish of crispy, deep-fried calamari is popular in coastal regions like Barcelona. Eat a plate of it at a beachside restaurant or head to a bar and include it in your tapas mix.
- Churros For a sugar hit, try Spain’s version of the doughnut. Churros are sticks of deep-fried dough, dipped in chocolate for good measure! Find them at open-air food stalls and cafes.
- Jamon Spain is famous for its cured ham, the legendary jamon. You’ll find salty jamon hanging in shop windows, on display at markets, and featured on menus throughout Spain.
- Gazpacho For a fresh and healthy Spanish dish, you can’t go past gazpacho. The raw, chilled tomato soup is a cool answer to Spain’s summer heat.
- Tortilla de Patatas Potato tortilla (or Spanish omelette) is a slice of authentic Spanish culinary tradition. A simple dish that’s often served as part of a tapas spread, it’s a great option for vegetarians wanting something hearty.
- Vino tinto We know what you’re thinking. Isn’t it a bit of a cop-out to call ‘red wine’ a must-try? Not when the diversity and quality of the drop are this good. There are so many must-sip varieties in Spain it’s hard to go wrong, but here’s a little list to get you started – tempranillo, rioja, priorat, and toro. Go!

Geography and environment
Located in southwestern Europe , Spain occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula and shares borders with France , Andorra , Portugal , Morocco , and Gibraltar, as well as the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The region’s topography is a blend of mountains, low-lying plains, and a long coastline.
The northern Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa are two northern mountain ranges that draw travelers from the continent and around the world in search of active adventure. The Picos de Europa is smaller and popular with hikers, while the powdery slopes of the Pyrenees attract hordes of skiers during an impressively long snow season.
Spain’s coastline and islands are world-renowned. The Mediterranean Coast, in particular, is incredibly long and beautiful, featuring a mix of sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and protected bays. Islands like Tenerife, Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca are among the most popular with tourists chasing sunshine and good times.
While many know its beaches, fewer travelers are aware that southern Spain is home to the only real desert in Europe – the Tabernas. The barren badlands were the setting for a number of Western films in the 1960s and 1970s.
However, most of the countryside in Spain’s central and northern regions offers green valleys, olive groves, rolling farmland, and rivers.
Home of cult fast fashion brand ZARA, Camper shoes, Lladro porcelain, Mango clothing, and some of the best wine and olive oil in the world, Spain’s consumer goods may not be cheap but the quality is high if you stick to authentic brands and hand-made goods. If you are chasing a bargain, flea markets are abundant in Spain and make for a great way to mingle with locals while you look for a souvenir. If you’re spending a few days in a city, ask a local (or if you’re traveling with Intrepid, ask your leader) where and when you can find the local second-hand market. Popular items to look for are leather goods like bags, belts and boots, Moorish mementos and printed fans.
It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.
Festivals and events
Valencia’s Las Fallas is a sizzling cacophony of colorful firecrackers, smoky bonfires, roaring rockets, and massive effigies. Celebrated each year in honor of Valencia’s patron saint, this is a week of fiery fun and extensive late-night partying.
Every summer the Spanish town of Haro explodes into a ‘Wine War’, known to locals as Batalla del Vino. Unforgiving residents pump red wine out of water pistols, hoses, and other vessels in this grand example of wine warfare. Be warned: no one is spared – this is not a spectator sport!
La Tomatina
A relative newcomer to the Spanish festival scene, La Tomatina draws in travelers, tourists, and the world’s media who come to see ripened tomatoes splattered across the city of Bunol. Thousands of people cram into the narrow town plaza to smash tomatoes into each other – a chaotic, strange, and super fun experience.
The Holy Week
As a predominantly Catholic country, Easter is a huge deal in Spain. But even if you’re not a believer, the Holy Week (Semana Santa) is a fascinating event to experience. Each region has its own unique traditions, but all involve lavish processions, incredible outfits, and torrijas (fried sweet bread).
Fiesta de San Isidro
Fiesta de San Isidro is Madrid’s largest festival to honor San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of Madrid who was believed to be a miracle worker in the 12th century. Over the years, the festival has evolved into an all-encompassing celebration of Madrid’s traditions and modern culture, from folk music and dancing to delicious street food.

Is Spain accessible for travelers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
Spain is a mixed bag when it comes to access for travelers with disabilities. While some regions like Catalonia are proactively working to meet the needs of travelers with disabilities, others may prove challenging for travelers with mobility and/or visual impairments.
Barcelona is notable as one of the most wheelchair-friendly cities in Europe. All of Barcelona’s major sights are accessible for wheelchair users, and some beaches have all-terrain wheelchairs for free hire as well as boardwalks that extend to the water. The vast majority of metro stations and all buses are accessible to folks with reduced mobility. Many train stations in Barcelona have tactile strips to direct folks with vision impairments to platforms, ticket machines, and elevators. Ticket machines and elevators have speech options in a variety of languages.
Madrid is also a city committed to accessible travel, with metro and bus systems that can be used by people with mobility and visual impairments and many accessible monuments.
Spain’s national parks are somewhat accessible, as they are commonly outfitted with accessible interpretation centers and viewpoints. The trails of the Picos de Europa are well-maintained and non-reflective, so may be accessible to people with visual impairments (depending on the severity of the impairment).
Travelers who use battery-operated hearing aids should familiarise themselves with the Spanish equivalent of the batteries their devices need.
If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.
What are some useful Spanish phrases to learn?
You don’t need to spend hours trying to learn Spanish before your trip... unless you want to, that is! The following phrases should help you get by:
- Good morning – Buenos días
- Good afternoon – Buenas tardes
- Good evening – Buenas noches
- How are you? – ¿Cómo está usted? (formal)
- How are you? – ¿Cómo estás? (informal)
- What are you doing? – ¿Qué haces?
- Thank you – ¡Gracias!
- Nice to meet you – Mucho gusto
- Please – Por favor
Does my trip to Spain support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Spain directly support our foundation partner, Open Arms.
Open Arms protects people fleeing from their home country to reach Europe by sea. Donations from our trips help them protect immigrants abandoned in international waters fleeing war, persecution and poverty. They collaborate with healthcare and frontline research teams to support immigrants through health emergencies and work in their countries of origin to strengthen communities and build alternatives to irregular or unsafe immigration.
Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?
Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Perfect 1 day trip from madrid.
Andres is a fantastic guide to Avila and Segovia. He was right on time for pick up, provided a comfortable ride, and gave us so much information - not only about those 2 cities but about the region, Spain, and Madrid. Avila and Segovia are a great 1 day trip but it is a full day so having a guide like Andres helped us manage our time and energy. Highly recommend

Top Things to Do with Teens in Madrid, Spain
I spent time in Madrid during college, and it’s always been a favorite place to come back to with my whole family! It’s great for even a quick trip because you can easily plan to visit a variety of places with so many sites located inside or close to the city center. So, keep reading below for the best things to do in Madrid with teenagers.
1. El Palacio Real (Royal Palace)
The Royal Palace of Madrid , also known as the Palacio Real, was once the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family. Today, it’s open to the public. You can explore the palace’s stunning, gilded interiors, with ornate furnishings, frescoes, and tapestries. There are beautiful gardens and courtyards surrounding the palace that you can visit, as well.
General admission tickets give you access to the Palace, kitchens, and gardens. You can also add on guided or audio tours for a small fee. There’s a discounted rate for kids 5 to 16 years old, and kids under 5 are free.
Highlights of the palace include the Throne Room, the Hall of Mirrors, and the Royal Armory. The 18th-century palace is also home to an impressive collection of Spanish art, including works by Velázquez and Goya.
2. El Retiro Park and Crystal Palace
If you’re looking for a great place to relax and unwind, or if you want to explore some of Madrid’s most beautiful natural spaces, check out El Retiro Park.
Located in the heart of Madrid, this sprawling urban oasis spans over 125 hectares and was recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s breathtaking, with a wide variety of trees, gardens, sculptures, fountains, and ponds.
One of the highlights of the park is the stunning Palacio de Cristal, or Crystal Palace. It’s a stunning glass and steel structure that was originally built in the 19th century as a greenhouse. Today, the palace is used as a venue for contemporary art exhibitions.
Other popular attractions in El Retiro include the lake, where you can rent rowboats and the Rose Garden, which is home to over 4,000 rose bushes.
3. Take a Tapas Tour of Madrid
If you’re looking for things to do in Madrid with teens, you can’t go wrong with a food tour. Tapas are a type of small savory dish or a snack that was originally served alongside wine or beer. A tapas tasting tour is a great way to experience authentic local culture and see the city!
You can book this small group tapas walking tour of historic Madrid with a local guide. You’ll start out in the historic San Miguel Market and explore the old city from there. Each booking comes with your choice of wine, beer, or another beverage. Kids of all ages are welcome.
4. Eat at Mercado de San Miguel
If your family prefers exploring local markets on your own, the San Miguel Market is a must-visit destination. Located in the heart of Madrid, this historic indoor market has been in operation since 1916. It’s home to dozens of vendors selling everything from fresh seafood to artisanal cheeses and Iberian ham.
You can pick up items to take back to your vacation rental or enjoy the outdoor seating in the Plaza de San Miguel next door. The market is always bustling with activity, and visitors can sample a wide variety of delicious Spanish specialties while soaking up the lively atmosphere. Plus, the San Miguel Market is also home to several bars and restaurants. You can visit every day from 10 AM to midnight.
5. Chocolatería de San Ginés
No trip to Madrid is complete without having churros and hot chocolate at the historic Chocolatería San Ginés . If you’re looking for unique experiences in Spain, this is a must. This iconic café has been serving up its famous churros con chocolate since 1894, and it remains a beloved institution in the city to this day.
The café’s churros are made fresh to order and served with a thick, rich chocolate dipping sauce that is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. They’re open 24 hours, so you can stop by for a quick snack while you’re sightseeing or come in for a leisurely breakfast.
6. Day Trip to Segovia
Segovia makes the perfect day trip for those interested in history and architecture. Just an hour from Madrid, Segovia is known for its impressive Roman aqueduct, which dates back to the 1st century AD, as well as its beautiful Gothic cathedral. And if the city’s stunning Alcázar fortress feels familiar, that’s because it was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s enchanted castle!
You can easily explore this stunning mountain city on your own or book a full-day tour of Segovia with transportation . Spend the day exploring the city’s charming streets and learning about the history of this ancient city from an expert. You’ll also get to sample the local cuisine, like Segovia’s famous roast suckling pig. And your tour also includes admission to local museums and sites like the historic aqueduct.
7. Temple of Debod
The Temple of Debod is one of Madrid’s most unique and fascinating attractions, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s layered history and cultural heritage. This ancient Egyptian temple dates back to the 2nd century BC and was originally located in Upper Egypt, but it was gifted to Spain by the Egyptian government in the 1960s!
Today, you can visit the Temple of Debod inside the beautiful Parque del Oeste. The temple is free to visit and features beautiful carvings and hieroglyphics, as well as historical markers where you can learn about the temple. The park itself is lovely to walk through with beautiful gardens and unbeatable views of Madrid (especially at sunset).
8. Parque de Attraciones
inside the massive Parque Casa de Campo near Madrid’s city center is the seasonal Parque de Attraciones de Madrid . It’s a great time if your crew is a fan of visiting theme parks on family holidays!
If you’re looking to fill a whole day and have both older and younger kids, this is also a great option. There are a variety of rides for children, teens, and adults alike, including thrilling roller coasters!
You can attend live shows or visit the water park (though there aren’t many thrill rides here), and younger kids will love the new Nickelodeon Land section of the park. When you’re hungry, you have a variety of options. There are cafes, kiosks, and restaurants throughout the park, or you can bring in your own food.
9. Watch a Real Madrid Soccer Game
For families, attending a Madrid soccer (or futbol) game is a fun way to bond over a shared love of sports. Even if you’re not a die-hard soccer game, attending a game is a memorable way to experience a unique aspect of Spanish culture! Madrid is home to two of the world’s most popular football clubs: Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid .
These teams have a fierce rivalry that spans decades. This means that attending a game at either of their stadiums is highly entertaining. Even if the teams aren’t playing during your visit, a tour of their respective stadiums is worth it. Real Madrid plays in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and Atlético Madrid plays in the Metropolitano Stadium.
10. Museum of Illusions
For more things to do in Madrid with teens, check out the Museum of Illusions , located in the city center. 12. Take a Guided Tour of Madrid
A quality way to see Madrid’s most popular landmarks is on a guided tour. Consider this 2-hour walking tour through the heart of Madrid . Your guide will entertain you with fascinating tales of the city’s long history and point out interesting architectural details.
First, you’ll explore the historic Puerta del Sol in the very center of Madrid. Then, you begin your walk toward the Royal Palace. At the palace, you’ll skip the lines and go right inside for a private tour through the city’s most famous historical site.
For a tour that your teens won’t soon forget, take a Tuk Tuk tour of Madrid ! Zipping around on this electric, open-air vehicle is a great way to get in a lot of sightseeing in a short time.
You’ll wind through the city center and around the El Retiro neighborhood, taking in the city’s beautiful palaces, churches, and museums. This tour is also great because you can choose between 1-4 hours, depending on how much time you have.

Like Segovia, Toledo is another good option for a day trip from Madrid . Only an hour south of the city, you can easily drive there and explore the cobblestone streets of the old town.
Many of the stunning structures in Toledo date back to the 13th century. It’s fascinating to see the mix of Arab, Christian, and Jewish influences throughout! Toledo was also home to the famed painter, El Greco. You can experience his work at the El Greco Museum or at the church of St. Tome.
You can also make things easy on yourself and book a guided tour with transportation . Just meet your guides at their offices near the Royal Palace. You’ll enjoy a scenic ride and a fully planned itinerary to the best stops in Toledo. If you prefer, you can also choose a half-day tour (AM or PM) or a full 8-hour tour.

For a more casual experience, Cardamomo Tablao Flamenco is a popular choice, with shows every night and a cozy atmosphere.
If your family is looking for a more upscale setting with a prix fixe dinner, go to Tablao Flamenco Torres Bermejas .
16. Walk Around Plaza Mayor
While you’re visiting Madrid with teens, take at least one morning or afternoon to walk around Plaza Mayor. It’s one of the most iconic and historic landmarks in the city. The plaza was constructed in the 17th century and has been the site of numerous cultural and historical events. This includes bullfights, royal coronations, and even public executions!
Today, the plaza is a bustling center of activity with numerous shops and restaurants at every price point. In the winter, it’s the site of a Christmas village, and during the warmer months, you’ll often see free summer concerts or interesting art installations in the square.
This is a lovely place to enjoy some tapas, watch street performers, and pick up some souvenirs, all in the most famous and historic plaza in Europe!
17. Paella Cooking Class
How exciting to learn how to cook an iconic Spanish dish like paella from a real Spanish chef? One of the best things to do in Madrid with teens is enjoy a 4-hour cooking class with dinner ! Head to Cooking Point in the city center to meet up with your small group and chef guide.
From there you’ll head to a local market where you’ll learn about local ingredients and purchase what you’ll need. Then it’s back to the cooking school to create your masterpiece.
This is a great way to bond with the family and enjoy good food when you dine on the dish you’ve created at the end of the class. (If you want to make paella, make sure to book the morning class, instead of the evening tapas class).

Another great way to take in some of the most beautiful landmarks in Madrid or simply enjoy low-impact sightseeing is on a Segway tour.
Segways are tons of fun and can be driven by kids as young as 16 (age 10 with an adult onboard). This small group Segway tour of old town Madrid will take you all over the historic city center and through some of the most beautiful streets in the city.
You’ll get close looks at historical sites like Almudena Cathedral, Puerto del Sol, the Templo de Debod, and the most popular plazas in downtown Madrid. Each guest will get a helmet and Segway safety lesson before heading into the city.
Your tour guide will give you fascinating information about each place you visit, too. This is a highly customizable tour with different route options and tour lengths. You can choose routes that take you to see the massive Casa de Campo or end your tour with a visit to an amazing tapas place!
20. Casa De Campo
Casa De Campo is the largest park in Madrid, located just west of the city center. It is a sprawling green space that covers over 1,700 hectares and offers a range of things to do for visitors of all ages. Originally a royal hunting ground, Casa De Campo was transformed into a public park in the mid-20th century. Today it’s a favorite destination for both locals and tourists.
One of the highlights of Casa De Campo is the Teleférico de Madrid, a cable car that offers panoramic views of the city as it transports you across the park!
There’s also an absolutely beautiful zoo, the Madrid Zoo Aquarium. The park offers numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for boating and fishing. There are also several picnic areas scattered across Casa De Campo, making it a great place to spend a relaxing day with the family.
21. Madrid Hop-On Hop-Off Bus
One of the best activities for a multi-generational group and for anyone wanting to fit in as much sightseeing as possible should book a hop-on hop-off bus tour of Madrid ! It’s a great way to get your bearings in the city center.

A hop-on hop-off tour is a top-notch way to experience any new city because you can enjoy audio guides for more information on sites along the route. If you want to spend time at an attraction, hop off and go inside! You can always catch the next bus when it gets to your stop. If you were to complete an entire circuit without getting off, it only takes about an hour or 90 minutes.

Palacio de los Duques Gran Melia
Madrid seems to be welcoming new luxury hotels with increasing frequency, with top names in hospitality like Mandarin Oriental and Rosewood putting down roots in the Spanish capital in recent years. And still, there’s more to come: EVOK is set to open Brach Madrid later this year, promising an array of superlative stays as diverse as the city itself.
Whether you’re looking for next-level luxury of the Grand Dame-variety, bespoke furnishings at 19th century palaces, or the lusty minimalism of Ian Schrager’s latest hotspot, Madrid’s hotel scene offers something for everyone. The best offer easy proximity to the city’s many cultural and gastronomic delights : many are practically perched atop the Golden Triangle of museums — the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Reina Sofia — or are otherwise tucked away in the smart shopping district of Salamanca.
Here, we’ve curated a list of the best places to stay in Madrid, including winners of our annual World’s Best Awards and It List, as well as other properties thoroughly researched and recommended by T+L editors. For more to see and do around the city, check out our Madrid travel guide .
Four Seasons Hotel Madrid
Four Seasons Resorts
Beyond the sophisticated design and superior service you’d expect from a Four Seasons property, unique draws include the hotel’s collection of over 2,500 pieces from local Spanish artists.
The guest rooms are simple and subdued in design — spring for a suite if you’re looking for something a bit more memorable.
Housed in a striking 19th century building, the Estudio Lamela-designed Four Seasons Hotel Madrid has become a favorite of locals and visitors alike since opening in September 2020 , landing coveted spots on our It List in 2021 and World’s Best Awards in 2022 and 2023 for its regal design and refined service.
It’s one of seven meticulously restored buildings in the Centro Canalejas, including a luxury shopping center that’s a destination in itself. In terms of location, this 200-room property is as central as it gets — Puerta del Sol and the Prado museum are only a short walk away — but once you’ve glimpsed the expansive wellness center (at four stories, it’s the largest in the city) and buzzy rooftop restaurant Dani (helmed by local chef Dani García), you may be tempted to stick around for a while. While the city has no shortage of museums, art buffs will love that the hotel itself features a collection of over 2,500 pieces from local artists studded throughout the space.
Original features like the lobby’s stained-glass roof have been restored to their former glory, while bright rooms — including 39 spacious suites and 22 private residences — balance old-world style with modern amenities in sophisticated neutral tones, plus marble bathrooms. If you’re looking to splash out on a truly unforgettable stay, spring for one of the gargantuan, classically-decorated suites, like the light-washed Penthouse Suite, which leads out onto two terraces overlooking calles Sevilla and Alcalás below. Guests can count on the dedicated concierge team to curate exceptional experiences as well, from Flamenco workshops to Spanish wine tastings.

Palacio de los Duques Gran Meliá - The Leading Hotels of the World
A lush central garden provides an oasis in the center of the city, while a rooftop pool and hot tub offer spectacular views of the mountains.
Only guests booking Red Level rooms have access to the hotel’s very best suites on offer, though this room category also comes with exclusive access to the hotel lounge, an open bar, a terrace, and more.
You may not be able to spend the night in the Prado, but you can still sleep beneath some magnificent Spanish artwork (or replicas of it, at least) at this Diego Velázquez-inspired property. Fluffy white beds beckon beneath prints of his famous 17th-century paintings, many of which hang in museums that are just a few minutes’ walk away. Of the 160 rooms and 20 suites, several are well suited to family travel, including two- and three-bedroom suites that are available exclusively for Red Level guests, who receive perks ranging from private check-in to access to the hotel’s executive lounge, an open bar, and more. At all levels, rooms feature Champagne-hued velvet couches and thick golden drapes that draw on the moody and opulent palette of the works, while bathrooms are stocked with Clarins toiletries and typically feature both bathtubs and showers.
What truly sets this 19th century palace apart is its spectacular rooftop pool and hot tub, which provide delightful views over the city from an intimate perch in Los Austrias, one of the most bustling neighborhoods. Downstairs, the manicured garden and courtyard also allow for moments of quiet contemplation — and if it’s serenity you’re after, you’re bound to find it at the Thai-inspired spa, which boasts a sauna and steam room.

Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid
Mandarin oriental Ritz, Madrid
You’re spoiled for choices with five wonderful culinary options here, all envisioned by famed Valencian chef Quique Dacosta.
The hotel is certainly a splurge, but there’s very little we can fault otherwise — the attention to detail and level of service make it an unforgettable experience that’s worth the investment.
Gilded and gorgeous, this historic 1910 property reopened to much fanfare in 2021 (after a $100 million overhaul), re-establishing itself as the singular place to see and be seen in Spain’s capital city. The property’s historic Palm Court was brought back to life after decades out of use, while a new Mediterranean restaurant bloomed in its iconic garden — just a few of the superb updates which earned it a spot on our It List (2022) and in our World’s Best Awards (2022). Sauntering past the uniformed doorman and into the ornate lobby, it’s impossible not to consider whose company you might be in: the institution is a favorite of the Spanish royal family (King Alfonso XIII helped finance it), while Grace Kelly honeymooned here and Salvador Dalí dined in its garden. Take it all in from the intimate Champagne Bar or over the highly lauded tasting menu at two-Michelin-star Deesa, a glamorous affair helmed by chef Quique Dacosta.
After dinner (and perhaps a dip in the marble pool at the serene Beauty Concept retreat), you can luxuriate in unparalleled comfort and chic design specifics in each of the 100 rooms and 53 suites. Think Spanish leather headboards, sultry dark oak wood floors, and Dolomite marble bathrooms — some of the stylish suites even feature mica ceilings that dazzlingly reflect the sunlight, while others offer views practically into the neighboring Prado.

Rosewood Villa Magna
The superb Sense spa and hammam make this a full-on wellness destination, with offerings ranging from eight-step facials to innovative sense journeys inspired by ancient Iberian practices.
Those who prefer a more classic color palette may find the mid-century rooms too modern.
Tucked back from the leafy Paseo de la Castellana, the modern and elegant Rosewood Villa Magna offers travelers a charming, contemporary place to indulge and unwind in the heart of the city’s ritzy Salamanca district. Beloved for decades as Hotel Villa Magna, the property joined Rosewood Hotel Group in 2021. Since then, T+L readers have voted it the best hotel in Madrid two years in a row in our World’s Best Awards, citing its supremely central location (smack in the city’s luxury shopping mecca) and superlative wellness offerings at Sense spa as primary draws.
154 generously-sized rooms and suites feature colorful accent walls and bold, chevron-printed carpets, which are a refreshingly modern departure from some of the city’s more classically-designed hotels (but don’t worry — there’s still plenty of old-world charm throughout this list if that’s more your style). All rooms feature large windows that look out over the treetops, offering city views from higher floors. Families will be delighted by the rooftop “Houses,” ultra-luxe accommodations that can sleep up to six guests and feature terraces large enough to host events on.

Santo Mauro, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid
Lorenzo Castillo-designed suites offer unique and playfully posh digs, like the namesake Duke of Santo Mauro’s green velvet-shrouded former chambers.
The mélange of Indian- and French-inspired textiles may feel overwhelmingly vibrant to those with more classic sensibilities.
Modern amenities meet 19th-century French aristocratic sensibility in this five-star hotel, which earned a place on our 2023 It List for its flamboyant decor and 49 antique furnished rooms spread across three sophisticated buildings. Formerly home to the Duke of Santo Mauro, the hotel showcases notable French influences in its design and architecture — yet many of the Lorenzo Castillo-designed suites feature unique textiles inspired by the Duke’s travels in India and China.
The former ballroom is a focal point, having been refurbished as a dramatically eclectic salon with crown molding and punchy patterned sofas fringed in bright blue trim. For a cozy bite, head to Rafa Peña’s intimate, upscale Spanish restaurant, which draws a well-heeled local crowd in the palace’s former library, which retains much of its original character.
- Neighborhood : Chamberí
- Distance From Airport: 6 miles
- Nearby Attractions: Sorolla Museum, Reina Sofia Museum, Temple of Debod
- Accessibility : Adapted rooms available
- Rates : Start at $670
“Like many aristocrats of his era, the Duke of Santo Mauro gravitated to Madrid’s elegant Chamberí neighborhood, settling in a palace built for him between 1889 and 1902. Now, that sprawling noble residence is a 49-key hotel named for its original denizen, and it continues to exude a regal air. The property’s cozy restaurant, situated in the former library, is appropriately decorated with books and burnished wood, while the salon (the old ballroom where current visitors can gather to socialize, read, or have a drink) is outfitted in deep red hues and a flamboyant assemblage of Louis XIV-inspired textiles.”

The Westin Palace, Madrid
Dining beneath the magnificent stained-glass cupola in La Rotonda Restaurant is an experience not soon forgotten.
While a spa, sauna, and fitness center are all on-site, unfortunately there isn’t a pool.
T+L readers voted The Westin Palace as a winner in our World’s Best Awards in 2023, deeming their plush beds some of the dreamiest around, and delighting in the Art Nouveau hotel’s prime location beside the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Reina Sofia Museums in the city’s famed Art Walk. The 470-room property is a true Grand Dame hotel, commissioned by King Alfonso XIII in 1912 and so embedded in the city’s cultural fabric of the last century that it’s home to a museum dedicated to its own history (a star-studded one, naturally — Dalí came here to draw, Madonna to vacation, and Hemingway set a scene from "The Sun Also Rises" at the bar).
The palatial property — which houses 470 light-filled rooms and one of the largest event spaces in the city — retains much of its original grandeur, thanks to architectural marvels like La Rotonda’s stained-glass cupola. Inside the Belle Époque rooms, guests will find calming yellow-toned wallpaper, parquet flooring, and the hotel’s sumptuous beds sheathed in crisp Frette linens, which invite a superb night’s sleep.

The Principal Madrid Hotel
Principal Madrid Hotel
The panoramic view of the city from the rooftop restaurant, Ático, is rivaled only by chef Ramón Freixa’s mouthwatering Spanish cuisine.
Breakfast isn’t included in all the room rates — but it’s worth adding on, as it’s also served up on the spectacular rooftop.
Intimate and well-positioned on the Broadway-esque Gran Via, this five-star hotel is easy walking distance from expansive Retiro Park and the peachy-hued Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. It’s a prime location for first-time visitors, and with just 76 rooms, it’s one of our go-to boutique properties in the city for warm, thoughtful service. Decor skews sleek and masculine, with shiny black-tile bathrooms and pops of purple and gold in the well-appointed bedrooms.
Above all, the true draw here is the hotel’s superb rooftop restaurant, Ático — helmed by chef Ramón Freixa, who has two Michelin stars under his belt — where you can tuck into a locavore tasting menu while savoring an excellent view of the iconic Metropolis building. The vistas don’t end there: head up to the solarium for a sunbathing session with the city as your backdrop, or stop by La Terrazza late into the evening, which draws a buzzy crowd of in-the-know visitors and trendy locals to the rooftop bar for craft cocktails.

The Madrid EDITION
Sexy, energetic, and unabashedly modern, this hotel is a microcosm of all things hip: Mexican and Peruvian eateries, the city’s largest infinity pool, and maybe the coolest billiards table in town.
The hotel’s modern design represents Madrid’s youthful, cosmopolitan side — anyone seeking a more traditional experience in the city should consider one of the classic hotels included on this list instead.
An enigmatic pink-washed hallway leads into the design wonderland of The Madrid Edition , a 200-room hotel whose 2022 opening was perhaps the most emblematic of the city’s refreshed appeal. A massive, undulating white slip of staircase delivers on hotelier Ian Schrager’s beloved brand of minimalist-modernism, while the hotel invites the sort of old-meets-new interplay of Baroque tapestries flanking futuristic pool tables.
Just off the Plaza de Celenque, Jéronimo (one of the hotel’s five dining concepts) draws you in with Luis Barragán-inspired pops of pink and a delectable Mexican menu from the minds of chef Enrique Olvera and Santiago Pérez (the powerhouses behind Mexico City’s Pujol, New York City’s Cosme, and Los Angeles’ Damian). The culinary delights run up to the roof, where an urban sanctuary serves up Peruvian bites; there’s also a spectacularly large infinity pool, where you can get your glow on before recharging in the candlelit spa. For unparalleled luxury, look to the two penthouse suites, each of which boast their own private pool.

JW Marriott Hotel Madrid
Most rooms at this ultra-central hotel offer beautiful balconies that bring in ample natural light.
The property does not offer a swimming pool, although spa guests can dip into a private hot tub.
Smack in the cultural and commercial heart of the city, JW Marriott’s first property in Spain debuted in 2023 and has been delighting visitors and residents ever since with its consistently excellent service, soothing color palette, and spacious rooms and suites. An easy walk from main sights like the Prado and Plaza Mayor, the hotel’s 127 rooms and 12 suites — the latter of which feature exceptionally large terraces with optimal views — are a perfect place to base yourself for exploring and unwinding. Most rooms boast a private balcony, while all are tranquil havens decorated in neutral tones by Rockwell Group.
The property aims to inspire mindfulness, offering experiences to maximize your well-being at every turn, be it the brick-detailed fitness center and exclusive spa treatments or the celebrated cuisine at chef Mario Sandoval’s QÚ Restaurant.

Relais & Châteaux Hotel Orfila
This incredibly chic and well-located palace also happens to be exceptionally family-friendly, offering everything from babysitting services to kids menus and early dinner.
The preservation of the historic layout means the property doesn’t offer adapted rooms for those with reduced mobility.
Immerse yourself in a piece of Madrid’s history with a stay in this 19th century palace, which offers just 32 rooms, suites, and villas. This is old-world charm on a truly intimate scale, with warm and eager service that will help you to feel instantly at home in your wallpapered abode. The staff here go above and beyond, greeting you by name and offering the sort of personal attention only smaller spaces can, but without ever feeling intrusive. Families will love how gladly staff will facilitate early dinner times (no need to fuss over finding food during Siesta) or babysitting services for younger children.
Our main gripe is that given the property’s historic layout, it’s unable to provide adequately accessible rooms for those with reduced mobility. However, the lauded garden restaurant, chef Mario Sandoval’s El Jardín, is accessible.

Tótem Madrid, a Small Luxury Hotel of the World
Totem Madrid
Sophisticated, residential-style rooms lure a cosmopolitan clientele at this 65-room boutique hotel tucked between Salamanca’s swanky shopping streets.
There isn’t a spa on-site, but the in-the-know concierges — referred to as “Local Gurus” — will gladly point you in the right direction for an indulgent wellness experience.
Nestled near some of the city’s best shopping in smart Salamanca, this 65-room property lures chic clientele with an eye for detail. Distinction and design are the overarching principles here, with minimalist whitewashed digs offering bright spaces to rest and recharge in a quiet part of the neighborhood. But those looking to socialize needn’t worry — head straight to the roof to find a buzzy crowd of well-dressed locals sipping craft cocktails on velvet green loungers.
The property features over 300 eye-catching artworks, including tastefully framed black-and-white prints in the rooms. As part of its protected historical heritage, the designers painstakingly restored the property’s original pine staircase — an impressive feat, including beautiful iron fence work that’s easy to admire as you make your way home at night.

VP Plaza España Design
VP Plaza Espana
Situated in a sleek skyrise overlooking the iconic Plaza de España, this contemporary hotel boasts some of the best views in a prime location.
Large meeting and event spaces draw a steady stream of business travelers — if you’re looking to unplug, the laptop-friendly breakfast room may not be ideal.
While rooftop bars and sun-drenched pools peek through Madrid’s treetops in abundance, few offer as superlative a vantage point as VP Plaza España Design, which is housed in a sleek 214-room skyscraper perched over its bustling namesake, the Plaza de España. The luxury hotel’s privileged position lures business travelers seeking sophisticated and stylish accommodations within walking distance of popular destinations like the nearby Templo de Debod and Royal Palace of Madrid. While the Wi-Fi is fast enough for all your Zoom needs, you may want to turn your camera off while working poolside (yes, it works up there, too). The spectacular rooftop is decidedly the property’s crowning jewel — head up there early to snag a spot at Ginkgo Sky Bar, a colorful collision of Asian and Spanish influences with frequent live music.
The property is also a leader in the neighborhood’s move towards sustainable tourism, and was one of the first hotels in the country to receive the LEED Gold Certificate rewarding its dedication to environmental consideration.

Only You Boutique Hotel Madrid
The hotel boasts a rare flexible check-out policy, so you can linger in your plush bed or soak up the sun on your private patio for a full 24-hours after check in, so long as capacity allows.
The Veuve Clicquot-branded garden feels a bit overwrought.
Elegant yet approachable, this award-winning design hotel — which bears the stylish mark of Spanish interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán — is centrally located to many of the city’s historic and cultural sights, as well as the trendy districts of Chueca and Malasaña, where cafés and nightlife are abundant.
While all the rooms are sun-soaked and spacious, there’s nothing quite like the two attic suites: both feature romantic sloped ceilings, exposed wooden beams, and fabulous outdoor patios that are perfect for relishing your morning coffee. The largest of the two has its own library. Best of all, the property offers a flexible late check-out policy that allows you to enjoy your room for a full 24 hours even on one-night stays, so you can grab a book and kick back — you’ve got time.

Mariana Borau
This family- and women-run hotel offers warm, truly personal service — not to mention, some of the best local recommendations for things to do around the bohemian Malasaña neighborhood.
Rooms facing hip Calle de Valverde are soundproofed, but those looking for a more tranquil experience should request accommodations facing the interior patio instead.
If you can spring for one of the penthouse rooms with a terrace at this family-run Malasaña gem, you won’t be sorry. Hammocks and yoga kits beckon on generous outdoor patios, while inside the rooms, chic Spanish artisanal touches abound — like handcrafted carpets from Gan Rugs and unique steel-and-leather bed frames made in collaboration with local designer Matías Carvia — all of which showcase the talents of Kikekeller’s studio, who redesigned the hotel.
The property was first opened in 2002, and is now run by the three granddaughters of the original founder; it’s a rare bird in that sense, offering a true family atmosphere to visitors who return year after year to this comfortable and well-curated abode. If you’re looking to explore the vibrant cafés, bars, and nightlife venues around the local Malasaña neighborhood, the staff will be glad to guide you in the right direction. While there’s plenty of art nearby — including the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art — there’s always something on at the hotel’s lobby gallery, 7i Art Gallery, a Berlin-inspired space with rotating collections featuring emerging artists.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha
Some of the suites in this quirky former palace are truly lavish, ranging up to 1,185 square feet.
With only 34 rooms, this hotel offers a more intimate, boutique experience – a consideration for travelers who may be looking for something more traditional or anonymous.
The Palacio de Atocha by CoolRooms offers some fittingly palatial suites, given that the 34-room property is housed in a 1852 palace that’s been reborn as a chic guesthouse. The impressively vaulted entrance gives a sense of the spacious interiors to come — at 22 feet high, it was initially designed to allow horse-drawn carriages to pass through into the palace; today, it leads into a discreet garden oasis, where you can dip into an aquamarine pool.
The suites here are some of the largest (and most reasonably priced) in the city, all sophisticated in their decor and largely done up in neutral tones with expansive leather headboards and Japanese-inspired bedside lanterns. For a next-level experience, consider either of the CoolSuites, which boast their own private terraces and outdoor jacuzzis overlooking the energetic Las Letras neighborhood below.

Know Before You Go
Wear good walking shoes.
Madrid is a city you’ll be exploring primarily on foot, and many of its wide boulevards and shop-lined back streets are paved with cobblestones. Be sure to pack sneakers or supportive sandals with great traction that will carry you comfortably for hours on end. When your feet get tired, fear not — Madrid’s metro system is reliable, ultra-easy to use, and cost-effective, and you can get pretty much anywhere in the city within 30 minutes.
Be prepared for Siesta and later mealtimes
First-time visitors, be warned: Madrileños take their Siesta seriously. Many shops and restaurants around the city will close their gates for the late afternoon, typically from 2 to 5 p.m., in order for staff to rest, eat, or just escape the heat during the scorching summer months. This is typically an excellent time to duck into a museum, as most of the larger ones remain open (and cool, thanks to air conditioning).
If you’ve visited Spain before, you know mealtimes in general are much, much later than what we’re typically used to in the U.S. — dinner time in particular can come as a shock to visitors, as Spaniards usually eat around 9 or 10 p.m. If that’s past your bedtime, you’ll still be able to find some places that are open for continuous service — they might just cater somewhat more to visitors than to locals. For cravings at any time of the day, several of the luxury properties on this list offer all-day restaurants and 24/7 room service as well.
Tipping isn’t required
As is the case across much of Europe, tipping is generally optional. While it’s a nice gesture to leave 10 to 15 percent for friendly or superior service in restaurants, bars, and taxis, tips aren’t expected or required. For small, inexpensive meals — think a glass of wine and any corresponding tapas — a Euro or two is always appreciated.
Learn some basic Spanish
While almost everyone you’ll encounter in Madrid’s vibrant hospitality industry will speak a solid level of English (at minimum), it’s still a good idea to brush up on some Spanish 101. Firstly, it’s polite to be able to greet people and offer pleasantries in their local language; secondly, some shopkeepers or smaller business owners may speak little-to-no English, so it’ll come in handy to be prepared with a few key phrases.
Book reservations in advance
Madrid is home to an ever-growing number of global culinary destinations , from modernist Michelin-star meccas like DiverXo to seafood spectacles like Desde 1911 . To avoid disappointment, be sure to book as far in advance (several weeks to several months) as possible. For less fancy or fussy spots, walk-ins or week-of reservations are typically fine.
How We Chose These Hotels
Madrid has seen a spectacular revival of its luxury hotel scene just in the past few years, with a dozen big-name luxury brands moving in along the city’s energetic Gran Vía and tucked away in elegant Salamanca. Narrowing down the top properties in the city wasn’t easy — several of the hotels included on this list were voted as T+L readers’ favorite properties in Madrid in our annual World’s Best Awards, while the most impressive new openings and design refreshes earned coveted spots on our annual It List.
In addition to those award-winning properties, T+L contributor Sophie Dodd relied on her expertise as a travel writer specializing in luxury and boutique hotels in order to research and review several editor-recommended properties. She previously spent a summer living and working from Madrid, during which time she familiarized herself with the best neighborhoods to be based in for prime exploring, shopping, dining, and more.
She also consulted other editor-favorite hotels in the city, and poured over hundreds of reviews. The properties included here reflect exceptional guest experience, attractive design, superlative comfort, and friendly concierge services. She also prized hotels with accessible rooms, sustainable programs, and luxurious amenities like spas, pools, and fitness centers.
And finally, as with all our hotel roundups, editors ensure all hotel recommendations we make align with our core T+L Hotel Values .

Introduction
Following our tradition, Schiller's Madrid campus has a privileged location in the heart of the cultural, social, and business area of Spain's capital. It is very close to the streets of Serrano, Goya, Jorge Juan, and La Castellana and a stone's throw from the Puerta de Alcalá and the Paseo del Prado, recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the first historic urban landscape declared in Europe.
The building has been equipped with the most modern facilities and technology. With over 3,000 square meters, it houses advanced learning spaces and provides the necessary conditions to achieve the level of quality and excellence demanded by Schiller International University's methodology, focused on experiential learning and digital educational technology.

Schiller International University has been a transformative part of my journey. It not only provided me with a strong academic foundation but also shaped me as an individual. I'm grateful for the supportive community and the invaluable lessons I learned during my time at Schiller.
Hussain Ayoub
Amazing experience!
I already had family here in Germany and Schiller was the best choice for me. As a Schiller student, together with the education, living so close to campus was of great benefit. After class we can all go out and have coffee, lunch, or dinner together.
Madison Jefferis
Incredibly rewarding!
My experience of coming to the Schiller Heidelberg Campus and adapting to the local culture has been incredibly rewarding. Despite some challenges in the transition, being part of a smaller private university provided me with ample opportunities for personal and academic growth.
