The War Without, The War Within

Such sweet sorrow (part 2).

Star Trek Series Episodes

In the season four opener of Star Trek: Enterprise, the NX-01 crew begins a mission that will take them to a distant planet, one of the most remote in the entire quadrant. The planet, known as North Star, has been isolated from the rest of the universe for hundreds of years.

The planet is inhabited by a race of people known as the Eisilans, who are believed to be descended from an ancient civilization that was wiped off the face of the Earth centuries ago during a great war. The Eisilans are extremely xenophobic and have no contact with the rest of the universe.

When the NX-01 is sent to North Star to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a previous Starfleet vessel, the crew is met with hostility from the Eisilans. The Eisilans are fiercely protective of their planet and its secrets, and they’ll do anything to keep outsiders away.

Despite the hostility, Enterprise’s captain, Jonathan Archer, attempts to establish diplomatic relations with the Eisilans, hoping that they can be convinced to allow the NX-01 to stay and search for the missing ship. As the crew explores the planet, they uncover a number of secrets, including a strange alien device that may hold the key to the missing ship’s location.

Meanwhile, the Eisilans are preparing to launch a massive attack against Enterprise in order to keep their planet’s secrets safe. As the crew races to unlock the secrets of the alien device and find the missing ship, they must also protect Enterprise from the Eisilans’ attack and convince the Eisilans that they are not a threat.

Through a combination of diplomacy, bravery, and ingenuity, the crew of the NX-01 is able to stop the Eisilans’ attack and finally locate the missing ship. After a thrilling adventure, the NX-01 is able to leave North Star with the missing ship and the alien device, as well as a newfound respect from the Eisilans. With this mission, the crew of Enterprise has once again proven themselves as true explorers and champions of peace.

At the bar, Archer learns that a man named Cooper Smith liberated the humans from the Skagarans back in the day, and meets Bennings, the deputy sheriff, who starts harassing Draysik, a Skagaran waiter. Archer stops Bennings, and then the sheriff enters and asks what's going on. Bennings claims that Archer interrupted a "conversation" between him and Draysik. The sheriff, whose name is MacReady, asks why Archer is in town, and he lies that he's on his way to visit his brother. He leaves, and MacReady tells Bennings to "keep an eye" on Archer.

Archer visits a teacher who he'd met prior, and when she asks why he "barged into" her house, he replies that he wants data on the Skagarans. She says that everyone knows about them, so he claims that he lives in a northern town where none are around. He claims that he behaved that way in the bar because he believes they deserve equal treatment, and she asks if he wants to meet some more. He nods, so they head off to what's known as "Skag town" while several men, including Bennings, watch.

The teacher and Archer arrive, and she tells the Skagarans that Archer isn't dangerous. While walking through the remains of a ship, Archer spots T'Pol and Trip and introduces them to the teacher, whose name is Bethany. Bethany invites Archer to attend one of her lessons on the Skagaran language and he accepts, sending Trip and T'Pol back to the ship to get information.

At school, Bethany teaches six Skagaran children their times tables and them to describe their history to Archer. They explain that their ancestors abducted and enslaved the humans, but then Bennings and two other men named Nash and Franklin arrest Bethany. Archer tries to protest, but then he gets arrested too. In jail, Bethany explains that the humans, led by Cooper, revolted against the Skagaran oppressors, but that Cooper was "ruthless", killing civilians as well as the oppressors. She explains that he subsequently made unfair laws that, among other things, prevented Skagarans from being taught to read and write and getting married.

MacReady calls Archer to his office and claims that the laws are necessary to keep humans free. He gives Archer an hour to leave town but sentences Bethany to ten years in prison. Feeling responsible, Archer bails Bethany out of jail, subduing Bennings. They escape on horseback, but MacReady finds them and starts shooting at them. Bethany is shot, but survives, and Archer beams himself and her up to the ship.

While Phlox treats Bethany's injuries, T'Pol expresses concern over Archer using the transporter in front of the locals. Phlox also finds out that Bethany is one-quarter Skagaran. Archer calls a staff meeting, telling the other senior staff that the logs have been translated and confirm Bethany's story. He decides to make himself and his crew known, stating that the humans deserve to know that Earth has not abandoned them.

Back on the planet, Bennings tells MacReady that he believes Archer to be a "Skagaran sympathiser", since the Skagarans are rumoured to also be able to disappear into thin air. MacReady is unconvinced, but Bennings, fearing an uprising, wants to kill all the Skagarans. MacReady insists that they must uphold the law and not murder the innocent, so Bennings resigns.

Archer leads T'Pol and a security team to the planet, now in uniform, and when he leaves the shuttlepod, he explains to MacReady that he is from Earth. He also tells MacReady that while he can't transport all of them back to Earth, he will send help, and that humans have outgrown bigotry, so the humans from the planet need to give it up if they want to live on Earth. Archer takes MacReady to the shuttlepod and introduces him to T'Pol. They prepare to take him to Enterprise , when Bennings shoots MacReady.

Archer tells Bennings that he is from Earth and asks to let him prove it, but another man provokes a shot from Malcolm, starting a firefight. T'Pol and Archer drag MacReady to safety, then Bennings shoots Archer, leading to a one-on-one fight in the stable. Archer wins despite his injured arm. T'Pol, meanwhile, is captured by one of Bennings's men, who threatens to kill her if Malcolm doesn't drop his weapons. However, Malcolm stuns T'Pol and then shoots her captor.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Actor Allusion : This isn't the first time Emily Bergl has played an alien-human hybrid .
  • Alien Abduction : The humans on the planet are descended from some people who were abducted by Skagarans.
  • An Alien Named "Bob" : Downplayed for Bethany, who's only one quarter alien.
  • Alien Non-Interference Clause : Archer decides that this doesn't apply because it's a human settlement that already knows about alien life and faster-than-light travel.
  • Badass Longcoat : Archer wears one while in disguise.
  • Deputy Bennings is prejudiced against Skagarans, having no qualms about killing all of them, and (until he resigns) is a law enforcer.
  • Downplayed for Sheriff MacReady, who's more of a Noble Bigot with a Badge . He's suspicious of the Skagarans and believes that the oppressive laws against them are necessary so that humans can remain free, but he's nowhere near as prejudiced as Bennings and doesn't believe in killing innocent ones. He's also willing to let go of his prejudice after a few conversations with Archer.
  • Changed My Jumper : Averted , as Archer's team wear wild-west costumes their first time down. When they return in uniform, it's because Archer's decided to come clean about who they really are.
  • Cowboy Episode : Certainly a change of pace from the Xindi arc; this episode involves a planet with a Wild West-type aesthetic.
  • Crime of Self-Defense : Any Skagaran who kills a human is hanged, even if it was self-defense.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle : Other than Archer getting a bullet through the shoulder, gunpowder-propelled slugs vs. directed energy weapons is exactly as one-sided as it sounds.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance : The North Star humans still have 19th century attitudes on race and gender equality, unlike the 22nd century crew of Enterprise .
  • Due to the Dead : Bethany pays for the dead Skagaran's coffin.
  • Earth That Was : Most of the planet's inhabitants believe Earth is a myth. The appearance of the Enterprise crew proves them wrong.
  • Eskimos Aren't Real : Justified. Due to everyone on the planet who's seen Earth being long dead, MacReady thought Earth was mythical.
  • Everyone Has Standards : The bartender may be the direct descendant of Cooper Smith, but even he is disgusted by Bennings. Similarly, Sheriff MacReady thinks that Bennings goes too far in his harassment of the "Skags".
  • Fantastic Racism : The humans hate and oppress the surviving Skagarans.
  • Fantastic Slur : The Skagarans are referred to as "Skags" by the humans.
  • Godzilla Threshold : Archer initially insists on maintaining the idea that they've just popped into town from another settlement, but when Bethany is shot during their jailbreak, he is forced to call for a beam-out and then returns with a shuttlepod, making it abundantly clear who they are.
  • Half-Human Hybrid : It's not visible, but Bethany's part Skagaran.
  • Hanging Around : The episode starts with a Skagaran being lynched.
  • Hilarious Outtakes : This is what happens when you get your keys mixed up. Bethany: What are you doing? Archer: Where I come from, it's called a "jailbreak". Bethany: It's called that here too. Archer: (struggling with the lock) Sometimes it's called that. Other times, it's called "playing with the lock". Bennings: [Unconscious on the floor] The silver key. Archer: What? Bennings: The silver key. Archer: Thank you.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade : Cooper Smith. In the official human history, he's a heroic liberator who defeated the evil Skagarans. The Skagarans, on the other hand, call him Rahk'tar ( The Butcher ).
  • Humans Are Warriors : The Skagarans learned this the hard way when the humans they kidnapped and enslaved rose up against them . Archer: They kidnapped the wrong people.
  • I Did What I Had to Do : MacReady says this of the humans and their ancestors, who didn't want to risk being enslaved again. Archer accepts this, but tells him that they need to move beyond that.
  • Insignia Rip-Off Ritual : When MacReady tells Bennings that he can't bully the Skagarans anymore, Bennings ditches his badge.
  • Kangaroo Court : Bethany claims that even if the Skagaran hadn't been lynched, he would've faced a trial with his killers on the jury. Either way, he was screwed.
  • In the past, the humans revolted against the oppressive Skagarans, but they went too far, killing civilians and making unfair laws.
  • Discussed when Bennings wants to kill every Skagaran because he's afraid they'll form an uprising.
  • Medieval Stasis : The human/Skagaran colony is still stuck at an 1860s level of technology and culture. Justified, as the humans destroyed all the advanced technology in the slave revolt so the aliens couldn't use it against them, and their population is only 6,000 or so, making a mass industrial movement out of the question. After things are settled, it's possible that the database Archer left for them will help them along.
  • Nice: Bethany, who truly cares about the Skagarans.
  • Mean: Bennings, who goes out of his way to harass the "Skags."
  • In-between: MacReady, who maintains the status quo but draws the line at bullying the Skagarans.
  • Plot Detour : At this point in the show, the Enterprise is on a mission to save the human race where every second counts... but upon detecting a planet with humans on it, they apparently decided to stop and take a look around, even though realistically speaking their response should have been to make a note in the log and suggest that someone ought to go check it out some time when, you know, humanity's future isn't hanging in the balance . Archer even notes near the end that there isn't a lot they can do for the colony until they've dealt with the Xindi.
  • R-Rated Opening : The lynching in the teaser seems to be there to justify the TV-14 rating as the rest of the episode is fairly pedestrian with regard to violence.
  • This Is Reality : Enterprise obviously can't transport 6000+ people back to Earth, even if they weren't already on an important mission. Archer tells MacReady it'll be years before Starfleet can muster enough ships to bring them all home.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure : Sheriff MacReady. He doesn't approve of his deputy bullying the Skagarans, and he's fairly quick to cooperate with Archer once he explains the situation.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech : Bennings vs MacReady. Bennings: You've always been too soft on 'em, Mac. MacReady: And you've always harassed them while I looked the other way, and that's gonna change right now.
  • Recycled Plot : Alien slavers abducted pre-spaceflight humans who eventually overthrew their overlords. Didn't Voyager already do this? Although in fairness this episode explores a different aspect of that premise (in the "The 37's", the alien slavers had long since departed) and the Voyager episode wasn't a Cowboy Episode .
  • Rock Beats Laser : Averted. The Enterprise away team and a few MACOs make short work of Bennings and his gang in a phaser vs. gun battle.
  • Saw It in a Movie Once : Of course Trip can ride a horse! He's seen every John Ford Western!
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them! : MacReady lets Henry the bartender/barber keep an illegal bottle of Skagaran whiskey as a makeshift anesthetic.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right! : Bethany teaches the Skagaran children at night, even though it's illegal. She ends up in jail for it.
  • Shoot the Hostage : During the shootout, one of the deputies takes T'Pol hostage. Malcolm stuns her , and then stuns the confused cowboy.
  • Shout-Out : Bennings and MacReady are both named after characters from The Thing (1982) .
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil : Bethany admits that what the Skagarans did to their human captives was terrible , but doesn't believe in punishing the current generation for it.
  • So Much for Stealth : The Enterprise away team first tries to blend in with the population by dressing in western clothing and traveling on horseback. But they are soon forced to use their communicators and transporter to escape a gunfight, outing them as being 'not from around here.' After learning the true history of the human/Skagaran colony, Archer makes the decision to skip the disguises and return in a shuttlepod in full uniform.
  • Space Western : Of the 'advanced aliens encounter Western town' type, although in this case the aliens are human.
  • The Teetotaler : The Skagaran who was lynched during The Teaser . Bennings asks if a sober Skag would really have the nerve to shoot a man.
  • Teleportation Rescue : Archer blows his cover when he has to call for a beam-out to survive Bennings and save Bethany.
  • To Absent Friends : Deputy Bennings offers a very disrespectful one "to dead Skags."
  • We Will Use Manual Labor in the Future : The Skagarans kidnapped the first humans to use as slave labor, deeming them suited to helping colonize an arid world.
  • What Happened to the Mouse? : We're never told if Archer kept his word about sending ships to return the human settlers to Earth. Given Enterprise is Starfleet's biggest and fastest ship, Starfleet wouldn't be in a position to retrieve them any time soon without contracting out the work.
  • Would Hit a Girl : Bennings shoots Bethany. Justified, since he's a sheriff's deputy and it's his job to shoot whoever breaks the law and she was escaping from jail. Also justified with the guy who threatens to kill T'Pol, since he's also law enforcement.
  • Written by the Winners : Archer says that everyone seems to have their own version of what happened between the humans and the Skagarans, and that he's not likely to get the truth from most of the former.

Star Trek: Enterprise follows the “North Star” and takes a page out of the third season of the Original Series. “Western” is the genre of the day! The western is a classic staple of genre shows (outside of being a genre itself). The previous Trek series have all done their own version of the western, to varying degrees of success. In the ninth episode of its third season, Enterprise takes a step back from the Xindi Conflict of the early 2000s and delivers an episode that feels much more of the ’60s in tone and concept. Is it a welcome reprieve?

The Wikipedia plot summary for “North Star”:

While in the  Delphic Expanse ,  Enterprise  discovers a planet inhabited by 6,000 humans who are living in the fashion of the 1860s  American frontier . Captain  Archer , Commander  Tucker  and Sub-Commander  T’Pol   beam-down  to the surface in period costume to investigate. They head into one of the numerous towns to observe the humans and aliens first-hand, and while Tucker and T’Pol acquire a horse, Archer stops Deputy Bennings from belittling a “Skag” waiter in the town’s tavern. After questioning Archer on his plans and intentions, Sheriff MacReady tells Bennings to keep a close eye on Archer.

Archer, wishing to learn more about the Skagarans, enters the house of a teacher named Bethany he had seen earlier. The two depart for “Skag Town”, the remnants of a 300-year-old wrecked spacecraft, but the deputy notices them leave. They arrive and meet Tucker and T’Pol, who had arrived earlier. Tucker and T’Pol travel back to  Enterprise  to investigate some data logs found in the wreckage, while Archer stays behind. On  Enterprise  Ensign  Sato  discovers that the humans overthrew their Skagaran masters after being brought to the planet. Bennings arrests and imprisons Bethany for teaching the children. Archer helps her to escape, but she is shot by Bennings. Archer orders an emergency beam-up in front of Bennings and other locals.

Doctor  Phlox  treats her injury and discovers that she is one-quarter Skagaran. Meanwhile, back on the planet, Bennings hands in his deputy badge after MacReady orders him not to take further action against the Skagarans. Archer returns in a  shuttlepod  along with T’Pol and a security crew, led by Lieutenant  Reed  — all wearing their modern uniforms. Landing in the center of town, he informs the Sheriff that he is from Earth and will return to help them once their mission is over. Bennings then shoots MacReady, starting a firefight. In the chaos, Archer is also shot by Bennings, but finally overpowers him in a fistfight.  Enterprise  then departs, but not before returning Bethany to the surface, and providing her with a  PADD  to educate the local children about Earth’s recent history.

Carnac's Guide to Star Trek Fleet Command

The ECS North Star

Carnac | August 11, 2020 June 10, 2020 | Independent Ship , Ships

The ECS North Star is a freighter and survey vessel that has been in service for almost 100 years. Boomer communities in the mid-2100s favored the North Star for space faring and as a colonization ship. Families and communities were born and raised on vessels of this class for generations and an entire network of trade ships has grown over the years.

In the beginning, there were Realtas and Corvettes and Fortunates . If you were really lucky, you could win or earn a Jellyfish. And for a time, it was the age of the Jellyfish, ripping through systems, hunting miners. It feels like the pre-history of STFC.

And then the time of the Jellyfish passed. If you dig deep enough, you can find fossilized Jellyfish in the layers of the sediment, a testament to the games past… all the way back in the winter of 2018.

But the only ship from pre-level 20 that I’ll regularly pull out is the North Star. Now that I’ve hit level 35, it feels like it might be time to mothball it for parts, but I haven’t been able to do so yet. I still use it during mining events. It’s still a cheap ship with a great range that I can use to tap bases. Unlike the Jellyfish, it has aged like fine wine.

The North Star is the Swiss Army knife of the early game. It’s good at just about anything… except maybe the one thing that it’s sold as.

What the North Star is Good At

  • Killing hostiles. Put your Starfleet Academy crew on there, and you’ll be able to quickly finish your dailies.
  • Killing mission bosses. Get Cadet Kirk, Instructor Spock, and Cadet McCoy on board, .
  • Breaking lower level bases. Think levels 15-23(ish). For me, this was my first real battering ram in breaking down bases starting at level 18.
  • Exploring. Out of the box, it’ll have a warp range of 20. My tier 7 has a warp range of 34.

What it’s Not So Good At

  • While it will technically mine really quickly compared to an Envoy, this comes with one major caveat.
  • The protected cargo is TERRIBLE. The overall cargo capacity is also really, really poor.
  • You could use it to mine in the territory of a hostile faction, and let the hunters bounce off it for a while. But you’re going to go overprotected really quick that way.

How Does One Get a North Star?

You’ll need 90 North Star blueprints and a level 18 shipyard to construct one. You can earn up to 18 blueprints from missions. The rest you’ll either need to purchase or get from an events store as available.

If you’re going to spend money on an early level ship, this is the one to get, as you’ll have it as a useful tool for a long, long time.

The ECS North Star never appeared on screen, it was only mentioned during the Star Trek: Enterprise episode Fortunate Son , where the ECS Fortunate did appear.

Lastly…

And No, It has nothing at all to do with this, which existed. And was terrible.

The Skagarans were a warp-capable humanoid race , also pejoratively known as " Skags ", in the Delphic Expanse .

  • 1 Physiology
  • 2 Society and culture
  • 3.1 Enslavement
  • 3.2 Enterprise
  • 3.3 Skagaran treatment
  • 4 List of Skagarans
  • 5 Background information

Physiology [ ]

Skagarans appeared nearly identical to Humans with the exception of distinguishing red protrusions above each eyebrow , on their throat , and in front of each ear . They also had red blood , like many humanoid species, and their body had a higher tolerance to alcohol than a Human body. They were similar enough to Humans to produce children with them and to breathe the same air as them.

Society and culture [ ]

Although some Skagarans believed in the concept of Hell , they did not practice burial ceremonies to dispose of their dead. As of the 19th century , they practiced slavery of other sentient species.

Technologically , the Skagarans achieved warp drive by Earth's mid-19th century. They possessed particle weapons (" guns which emitted a beam of light ") and, reportedly, had transporter technology (" they could move through thin air from one place to another "). Aboard Skagaran starships , they recorded logs in data modules , which used crystal -like data chips .

Skagarans had their own kind of alcohol , Skagaran whiskey , and their own language .

Skagaran history [ ]

Enslavement [ ].

During the 19th century, Skagarans were establishing colonies and were in need of workers. One Skagaran ship was sent to Earth . The vessel's crew abducted several thousand Humans from the United States' western rocky desert regions (as well as horses , dogs and cattle ) and took them as slave workers to help the Skagarans start a colony on a planet which was located in the Delphic Expanse but had a climate similar to Earth's.

Cooper Smith

Cooper Smith

According to the Human account, Cooper Smith was a folk hero who overthrew their Skagaran masters. However, the Skagarans recorded a slightly different version of events, calling Cooper Smith "rahk'tar", which meant " butcher ". According to the Skagarans, Smith and his men burned the Skagarans' ship, destroying their weapons and murdering most of them, including entire families . To ensure the Skagarans could never enslave the Humans again, Smith wrote the first laws that kept the Skagarans from going to school , owning property or marrying . By the mid- 22nd century , the Skagaran population was less than a thousand and most lived in settlements, one of which was named " Skag town " by the Humans. While the Skagarans may have thought poorly of Cooper Smith or moreso his methods, they did have some understanding of why he did what he did. The Skagarans of the 22nd century no longer accepted slavery as did their ancestors; now calling it a great crime. There were also some Skagarans that had intermarried with Humans and produced viable hybrid children; a Human with a single Skagaran grandparent had no outward Skagaran traits.

Enterprise [ ]

Skagaran planet, low orbit

A Skagaran colony

In 2153 , the NX-class starship Enterprise visited the Skagaran colony planet , which was still inhabited by Humans and Skagarans. When an away team beamed to the surface of the planet, T'Pol and Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker discovered the wreckage of the Skagaran ship that the Skaragans, three hundred years earlier, had used to transport Humans to the planet. In the ship's data module, T'Pol and Tucker found some data chips, which contained Skagaran log entries . The Skagaran logs were brought aboard Enterprise , where the crew learned that the Skagarans had suffered many disciplinary problems. Six months after the Skagaran ship had arrived, there were no more logs made. Although Enterprise was too small to carry the six thousand Humans who lived on the planet back to Earth, Captain Jonathan Archer planned to return to the planet and provide aid to the inhabitants. Archer believed that when Starfleet was eventually able to send ships to the planet, the crews of those vessels would find that the Humans had changed some of their laws.

Skagaran treatment [ ]

Although some Skagarans, such as Draysik , were employed in saloons , they were not allowed to drink with their Human masters and therefore reacted badly to alcohol. Skagaran whiskey was illegal, but a barber named Henry had received special permission to keep a bottle of it for medical purposes. Henry doubled as the dentist, and the whiskey acted as a anestetic for when someone's tooth needed to be removed.

If a Skagaran killed a Human, it was considered a hanging offense, even if the Skagaran had been acting in self-defense.

Legally, Humans were not encouraged to harass the Skagarans, though a Human who defended a Skagaran from other Humans could possibly be arrested. It was deemed illegal for a Human to teach Skagarans and the minimum punishment for doing so was ten years in jail . However, some Humans, such as Bethany, taught Skagaran children outside at night. A subject that Bethany taught her students was mathematics , including the study of multiplication and long division. The students who Bethany taught wrote on slates . Some of her students were called Yral , Kret , and Taliyah . Bethany herself was one-quarter Skagaran. When the starship Enterprise left the Skagaran planet, Bethany had been allowed to legally teach Skagaran and Human children together. One of the subjects she taught was Earth history , including the study of the first airplane . ( ENT : " North Star ")

Background information [ ]

The nickname "Skag" was invented by "North Star" writer David A. Goodman . He used a "k" sound and a "g" sound in the word because he thought they made it sound "nasty", which was his intention. However, Goodman has admitted thinking that, because it is a fictional term, it will never "have the power of one of the awful [real] words." (" North Star " audio commentary , ENT Season 3 Blu-ray special features)

In the final draft script of "North Star", Skagarans were not physically described, other than being referred to as "alien humanoids".

When it came time to design the look of the Skagarans, it was deemed appropriate for their makeup appliances to not seem too alien. This was because Skagarans were to be established as capable of interbreeding with Humans and producing offspring that could be mistaken for being Human. (" North Star " audio commentary , ENT Season 3 DVD / BD special features) However, David A. Goodman was left with the impression that the makeup was slightly too subtle (at least at the start of the episode, when the species is introduced). (" North Star " audio commentary , ENT Season 3 Blu-ray special features)

Executive Producer Brannon Braga once referred to the Skagarans as "a poignant little metaphor for the Native American Indians ." ( Star Trek: Communicator  issue 151 , p. 30) In fact, the plot point regarding the criminality of teaching Skagaran children was thought up as a way to make the aliens' predicament slightly more sympathetic than originally conceived. Paramount Plus renews Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but cancels Lower Decks, the best of today's shows

Paramount Plus has some good news and some bad news for Star Trek fans...

A still from the animation of Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks – arguably the best Star Trek series, if its flawless ratings from critics are anything to go by – will make its final voyage later this year. The show will come to a close after its next season, its fifth, which is expected to air later in 2024.

But there's some solace for Star Trek fans, as Stark Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fourth season. If a fifth season is the streaming equivalent of the red uniform that indicates one of the teleported team isn't coming back, that means Star Trek: Strange New Worlds should still be around for at least one more season after that.

The news of Star Trek: Lower Decks' cancellation comes via show creator Mike McMahan and co-producer Alex Kurtzman. In a message shared with the Star Trek website, they wrote: "We wanted to let you know that this fall will be the fifth and final season of  Star Trek: Lower Decks . While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we've spent making this show has been a dream come true."

Stay tuned for the "hilarious" fifth and final season

According to the duo: "We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we're working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the  Cerritos  crew with a big send-off... We remain hopeful that even beyond season five, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole  Cerritos  crew will live on with new adventures."

Fans of the show will be disappointed. It's been consistently great, with season four currently sitting at an impressive 100% on Rotten Tomatoes – that's higher than even the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which has 99%. As Rolling Stone put it: " Next Generation and Deep Space Nine took a while to find themselves, and so did Lower Decks " – the fourth season has "become a highlight of this current phase of TV Trek".

Hopefully it's some consolation that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for another season. It's currently sitting with a 98% rating based on 99% for season one and 97% for season two. CBR says "it's shows like Strange New Worlds that confirm there is plenty of life in the venerable science fiction franchise, giving fans plenty to look forward to every Thursday for the exciting adventures of Captain Pike and his Enterprise", while The Mary Sue says that " Strange New Worlds shows that there’s still plenty of life left in the classic Star Trek format."

All the seasons so far of Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are streaming on Paramount Plus.

Review Text. In brief: A shallow Trek adventure by the numbers. "North Star" takes a high-concept situation and filters it through the most obvious and worn of Star Trek formulas.
