Walt Disney Animation Studios is opening a new production facility in Vancouver , British Columbia, as it ramps up its streaming offerings.
Focusing on long-form series like the upcoming musical revisiting of “Moana,” the studio will recruit new talent for its feature-quality slate and special projects meant exclusively for Disney Plus, it was announced Wednesday by WDAS President Clark Spencer.
Back in Burbank, the flagship animation studio will expand its over 900 employees and remain the exclusive home for film projects, as well as shorter form series such as the recently announced “Baymax” and “Zootopia+.” Story development, storyboarding and production design for all projects will be based in Burbank.
“Disney Animation is creating more original storytelling for Disney+, expanding into series for the first time in our history with ‘Iwájú,’ ‘Tiana,’ ‘Moana,’ ‘Baymax’ and ‘Zootopia+,’” said WDAS chief creative officer Jennifer Lee. “As we continue to grow our original slate of projects, there are more creative, artistic and technological opportunities than at any previous time.”
With the opening, Amir Nasrabadi becomes head of WDAS, Vancouver. An animation veteran, Nasrabadi most recently served as executive vice president and general manager at WildBrain Studios. Previous roles include overseeing Pixar Canada as as well as senior leadership roles with Illumination and Paramount Animation. He previously served as WDAS’ fInance lead.
Popular on Variety
“I am so honored and excited to be joining the Disney family again,” says Nasrabadi. “I continue to be amazed at the high-level of artistry and technical advancements coming out of the animation industry here in Vancouver and I am so proud to be a part of this community. This is really a dream come true for me.”
WDAS is not the only Disney-owned unit amping up animation. Marvel Studios is preparing the release of the animated multiverse series “What If?” on August 11. In late July, the division’s executive vice president of film production Victoria Alonso teased that more is to come from the comic juggernaut.
“We’re going to have our animation branch and mini studio, and there will be more to come from that as well,” Alonso told Variety . “We’re super excited about animation, which is my first love.”
Targeting a January 2022 opening, the Vancouver studio is recruiting for roles imminently. “Moana,” set for a 2024 debut, will be produced by Academy Award nominee Osnat Shurer, who worked on the feature film and “Raya and the Last Dragon.”
“With Burbank and Vancouver both home to some of the world’s most talented artists and technicians, we believe the storytelling and visual quality created within each location will meet the incredibly high standards we set for ourselves and audiences have come to expect from Disney Animation,” added Spencer.

Clark County Open Studios Tour celebrates 10 years of art and artists
Popular artists studio tour introduces the christine rice memorial scholarship.
This weekend’s Clark County Open Studios Tour marks 10 years for the event, an annual pilgrimage through artists’ work spaces that draws thousands of visitors.
The tour is capped at 50 artists every year, so it hasn’t grown in scope, but it has grown in influence. Organizers say the event has enlivened Clark County’s arts community, which is now more connected, more diverse and more visible to the public than they could have imagined a decade ago. Since then, the tour has shown the work of 189 artists.
“We have so many amazing artists, but Open Studios uncovers them and brings them together,” said Jennifer Williams, who has directed the tour since it began.
This year, the tour introduced the Christine Rice Memorial Scholarship, named after an artist featured in three Open Studios tours who died in September 2022 at age 31. The scholarship awards $1,000 to emerging artists and pairs them with artist-mentors.
The scholarship’s first recipient is Annika Larman. Her artist-mentor is Pamela Sue Johnson, 59, who has been part of the Open Studios Tour for four years.
Larman, 21, is a graduate of Cam Academy in Battle Ground and received a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University Vancouver. She’ll show her art in Johnson’s Lincoln neighborhood studio alongside Johnson’s mixed-media works.
“I’ve been able to meet all kinds of people — all ages, all mediums, full-time artists and part-time creators — all over Clark County,” Larman said. “I’ve done quite a few studio visits, talking to artists about how they became creatives and what advice they have for younger artists. On top of that, just consuming so much impressive art has been so rewarding.”
None of this surprises Johnson. It’s exactly the kind of supportive community she discovered when she was first accepted into the tour in 2019. She found a wellspring of encouragement from other Open Studios artists, as well as artists not on the tour who visited her studio. She said 200 people came through her studio that first year, exactly the boost she needed as a self-taught artist. (“I went to art school at my kitchen table and graduated top of my class,” she quipped.)
Johnson is sharing her 504-square-foot studio (which is also her living space) with Larman as her artist-mentor. Even though it’s a tight squeeze, Johnson said it hasn’t been a sacrifice. She sees it as making an investment in the next generation of Clark County artists.
Johnson calls herself a “mixed-media expressionist,” layering paint, paper ephemera and photos, as well as written words and sketches, into her finished works. Her process has less to do with exacting techniques and predetermined results than it does with expressing what she’s currently thinking and feeling. Words come to her as she works and she simply adds them into the artistic mix.
“I make my art from a place of intuition rather than skill and precision. Skill is important but intuition leads my art,” Johnson said. “I do my best to be unfiltered and authentic. The more vulnerable I am, the more universal the art.”
In addition to Open Studios, Johnson can be found at Portland’s Saturday Market, Mountain View High School’s holiday bazaar on Nov. 11 and the Portland Holiday Market, Nov. 17-19 at the Portland Expo Center. She’ll soon offer livestreamed online classes at pamelasuejohnson.com . Given that she left a factory job at 55 years old to become a full-time artist, Johnson feels compelled to inspire others to take similar leaps of faith.
“I told Annika, ‘Welcome to the magical creature club,’” Johnson said. “When you’re an artist, you live a life of magic.”
Larman, an abstract mixed-media artist, said Johnson’s mentorship has been invaluable. Their relationship is especially meaningful, Larman said, because the two artists first met during an Open Studios tour a couple years ago.
Larman credits Johnson with being one of the three people (including Williams and her mother) who were instrumental in encouraging her to pursue a career in the arts. Open Studios has been the perfect springboard for Larman, who plans to set off in January for a six-month arts residency at one of Denmark’s folk schools. She plans to use the time to hone her skills and expand her portfolio.
“I feel so lucky,” Larman said. “I’ve been to Open Studios multiple times and I loved meeting the artists. Now I get to be on the other side of that.”

Vancouver is one of the most cultural diverse cities in Canada. The city has developed its architecture in response to its temperate climate and adapting it to the natural environment involving the Pacific Ocean, forests and mountains. The Greater Vancouver, the metropolitan area, is the major urban centre of the city and an international hub and the third most populated metropolitan area in Canada.
With a strong connection to nature, the West Coast Modernism, a regional variation of modernism emerged in Vancouver influencing its residential design. It is mainly modern but it presents merging contrasts like The Birks Building in Neo-Classic style or the Burrard Street Bridge built following Art Deco style.
Vancouver’s Downtown, the "City of Glass", has a myriad of residential Towers. The Marine Building is one of the most popular constructions of the city but also the Jameson House, The Crown Life building and the Vancouver Convention Centre’s West Building are well known architectural landmarks for any visiting architect.

A program of Artstra, Open Studios is an annual juried art event designed to enhance community awareness of talented local artists while enriching the cultural life of Clark County neighborhoods. Visitors can explore Clark County, visit local artists in their working studios, and learn how, why, and where their art is created.
Clark County Open Studios is made possible in part by assistance from the City of Vancouver, Washington Lodging Tax Grant Program, our community sponsors, and our many volunteers.
The 2023 10th annual Open Studios tour was a benchmark for a beloved annual event and record-breaking year! Starting with the preview show and 10-year anniversary celebration on First Friday, Art at the Cave welcomed over 400 visitors. The beautiful installation of 51 artists highlighted the diversity of our arts community and how strong we are when we come together. The weekend tour followed as artists and visitors connected in the artists’ workspaces, sharing stories through art while they learned from each other. Many visitors return year after year, but for some, it is their first time stepping into the artists’ studios and experiencing the creative process. Artists’ surveys reported 7550+ studio visits, averaging 150 visitors per stop, and record sales. After the tour, Art at the Cave Gallery held an artist’s talk featuring several of our new artists. Annika Larman, this year’s Open Studios Emerging Artist, spoke about her experience being the first recipient of the Christine Rice Memorial Scholarship .

Influential History
British Columbia was home to Indigenous First Nations communities for 10,000 years before Europeans arrived. Vancouver's harbor became a trade hub in the mid-1800s, with lumber, whaling, and gold rushes enticing international settlers. It soon developed into a transportation center, as the terminus of the Canadian Pacific transcontinental railway and later Trans-Canada Highway. Today, Vancouver prides itself on being one of the most culturally diverse and environmentally sustainable cities in Canada. Incorporate history into your Vancouver Private Tour.
Eclectic Architecture
“Vancouverism” is the city's urban planning design philosophy characterized by high-rise residential and mixed-use developments. The Greater Vancouver area builds on a combination of architectural styles, ranging from 20th-century Edwardian to American Craftsman, to 21st-century modernist "West Coast style." Widespread inventive designs using complex geometric forms, favoring open-plan layouts, and maximizing natural light through use of glass, have granted the city its monikers "City of Glass" and "See Through City." Incorporate architecture into your Vancouver Private Tour.
Authentic Lifestyle
Vancouverites focus on a balanced natural lifestyle year-round. Within the compact downtown core, you’ll connect with residents dining al fresco on local fare and listening to live music. As the hometown of athleisure pioneer Lululemon, you’ll join stylishly comfortable locals strolling the city seawall and ancient rainforest of Stanley Park, taking surfing lessons, or stand-up paddle boarding from English Bay or Kitsilano Beach through the warmer months, or enjoying a myriad of winter activities at various world-class mountain resorts. Incorporate lifestyle into your Vancouver Private Tour.
Delectable Dining
From Canadian classics like poutine to Japanese karaage chicken to craft beer and world-class wine, you’ll savor a diverse celebration of local flavors in chic restaurants, al fresco cafés, market vendors and food trucks. The birthplace of the 100-Mile Diet, Vancouver has long been open to conscious dining: local, seasonal, and sustainable dishes that offer a connection to farmers, growers, and fishermen. Incorporate dining into your Vancouver Private Tour.
Natural Landscapes
Vibrant and green, Vancouver is one of the warmest Canadian cities. Its diverse landscapes, city parks, and pristine coastal ecosystems are rich habitats for thousands of species of flora and fauna. Visiting windswept beaches and temperate rain-forests, you may see a pod of hunting orcas, black bears catching spawning salmon, or an eagle nesting in the treetops. Visitors and locals alike don’t need to go far to find a deep connection to nature. Incorporate landscapes into your Vancouver Private Tour.
Unforgettable Excursions

Chris Rose is remembered as an enigmatic sculptor and painter who is best known for his alabaster and bronze sculptures of snowboarders, skiers, mountain bikers, windsurfers, curlers, ballet dances and various birds and beasts. Many of his sculptures were awarded as trophies at international sporting competitions and are treasured by championship athletes such as Olympic Gold Medallist, Ross Rebagliati.
Born in Germany in 1930, Chris immigrated to Canada in 1952. After studying architecture for 2 years in Ontario, Chris completed his arts/science degree at UBC. During his various career pursuits in government and labour relations, Chris began carving in soapstone, turning his hobby into a full time vocation upon his retirement. Chris’ sculptures were widely exhibited across Canada and are treasured in private collections in North America, Asia, New Zealand and Europe.
Chris moved to Quadra Island in 1998 and joined the burgeoning arts community. In 2003, he initiated the first of what has become the annual Quadra Island Studio Tour. We commemorate his recent passing by dedicating the 2024 Quadra Island Studio Tour to Chris Rose.

We have also added two HyperHEPA filtration units to our control room and recording rooms, and upgraded the air filters in our HVAC system to MERV 13 hospital-grade filters.

LOCATION & DIRECTIONS
The studio is located in East Vancouver, Canada, in the artistic Cedar Cottage / Commercial Drive neighbourhood. The studio is across the street from a cafe, and just blocks away from many great restaurants and a cold beer and wine store.
When entering the studio from the front on Commercial Street, look for the black door with the white butterfly logo and 3702 on it located between Britannia Food Equipment and a grey house. The front entrance is set back from the street by approximately 40 feet. Press the “CALL” button when you arrive.
When coming from the alley (best choice if you have gear to load in), look for the blue-grey concrete block building, also with a black door with the white butterfly logo and 3702 on it. There are parking stalls at the back that you are welcome to use as well as free street parking in the neighbourhood.
INTERNSHIPS
Monarch Studios occasionally takes on interns. If the following describes you, feel free to write us at [email protected] . Please do not drop by the studio without an appointment, as a session is likely in progress.
The audio industry is a demanding one, and we are looking for the following in our interns. You have to want to be the first one at the studio in the morning and last one to leave at night. You go out of your way to make sure clients are comfortable, the studio is clean, and that sessions go as smoothly as possible. You have a good attitude, good people skills, and can be upbeat even when you are tired. Our goal is to raise up interns to become paid engineers and future clients of the studio. For that reason, to be considered you must be interested in interning for at least 6, preferably 12 months. Because of the large number of audio school graduates applying, we do not accept applications from people without at least one year completed at an accredited audio school, or the equivalent experience in a commercial studio.
