About Tales and Travel Memories

Tales & Travel Memories is an innovative book and reading library program that provides services directly to people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias, not just their caregivers. Each one-hour program takes participants on an imaginary trip to another country or region of the United States and includes books, music, objects, folktales, and interesting facts about each destination country or region of the United States.

Tales and Travel Memories is delivered by volunteers and Gail Borden Public Library District staff to 12 assisted living facilities in Elgin, Illinois. Visits are arranged ahead of time, and volunteers often deliver the same destination to multiple facilities, ensuring that participants receive personal attention during the program.

Traveling kits in rolling carry-on suitcases are also available for check-out at Gail Borden Public Library. Kits include several non-fiction books about a destination, examples of music, a DVD, and other items. Smaller in scale than a full program, Tales and Travel Memories check-out kits are designed to provide a program experience in a one-on-one setting. This enables caregivers to engage with their loved ones in new ways, stimulate conversation, and reminisce.

April 28, 2022 – Library Services for Dementia/Alzheimer’s (LSDA)/ODLOS/ALA Webinar More and more librarians are realizing that people living with dementia can still benefit from using library materials, but they are often uncertain about how to actually do this.  After summarizing current research on this topic, this webinar will give practical advice about how to choose books and other reading materials that are uniquely suited to each individual, following the tenets of person-centered care.  In addition, ideas for developing group programming will be shared, based on successful programs held in libraries and memory cafes across the country and around the globe.  Literacy activities can include reading out loud, browsing through books, singing, choral reading of poetry, storytelling, improvisation and more.  Once you see how people respond to these opportunities, you will be hooked! Tales & Travel Memories named 2017 Library of Congress Best Practices Honoree  — December 22, 2017 Mary Beth Riedner’s acceptance speech highlighting Tales and Travel Memories as an honoree for best practices at the 2017 Library of Congress Literacy Awards ceremony:

PRESS RELEASE : Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden recently announced that the Tales & Travel Memories program of the Gail Borden Public Library District, Elgin, IL has been selected as a 2017 Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program Best Practice Honoree. According to the press release announcing the 2017 Library of Congress Literacy Awards winners, “Three organizations received awards from Hayden and philanthropist David M. Rubenstein: the Children’s Literacy Initiative; the National Center for Families and Learning; and Pratham Books.  Originated by Rubenstein in 2013, Literacy Awards honor organizations working to promote literacy and reading in the United States and worldwide.  The awards recognize groups doing exemplary, innovative and replicable work, and they spotlight the need for the global community to unite in striving for universal literacy…The Library of Congress Literacy Awards program is also honoring 15 organizations for their implementation of best practices in literacy promotion .”  The Tales & Travel Memories program was designated as one of these 15 Best Practice Honorees! As many of you know, the Tales & Travel Memories program takes persons living with dementia on an imaginary trip to locations across the globe using highly illustrated adult and children’s books along with other library materials.  “Travelers” take turns reading out loud from a folktale, legend or myth associated with the chosen location.  They are also invited to read aloud from a list of interesting facts.  Finally, they browse through carefully selected books which stimulate memories and spark conversations with the volunteers and library staff conducting the program.  Supplementary materials including music, artifacts from the destination, coloring pages and even food make the program multi-sensory.  This one-hour monthly program has been offered at over 15 memory care facilities in the Elgin, IL area.  Circulating kits based on the program have also been made available for those who are living at home. Librarians across the country are invited to replicate this program in their own communities and many have already done so.  There is a Tales and Travel Memories website that contains a free tool box with 12 excursion guides and 31 folktales made accessible through a Creative Commons license. Librarians from the Gail Borden Public Library attended the conference and awards ceremony which was held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 28, 2017.

Travel: Step into a fairy tale in Charlevoix, Michigan

Charlevoix's Mushroom House may remind visitors of some favorite fairy tale or childhood story – but they're real!

Midwestern small towns can look a lot alike, but experienced travelers know there’s always something that makes each stand out.

In Michigan, Charlevoix's magnificent setting between the shore of Lake Michigan and the azure waters of Lake Charlevoix ensures that visitors are not likely to confuse the town for any other. But Charlevoix is also home to a group of whimsical  – some might say “magical” – buildings that are sure to charm those who seek them out.

The Mushroom Houses of Charlevoix are a collection of more than two dozen homes, plus three commercial buildings constructed a century ago, beginning in the 1920s by self-taught local builder Earl Young.

Travel: Prehistoric drawings can be seen in Ohio at Leo Petroglyphs

Each structure is located in or near downtown Charlevoix, and each is a unique and fascinating example of an architecture that blends something from arts and crafts and storybook styles with a touch of Young’s own crazy genius.

The buildings get their name from their appearance. With walls of local stone and boulders, and cedar-shake roofs with lines that bend and twist like waves or growing tree branches, the structures seem as if they could have sprung naturally, like mushrooms, out of the surrounding soil.

The boulders that support the houses were meticulously chosen by Young who, yes, was a boulder collector who would sometimes squirrel away favorite specimens he came across for use on future projects. Then the houses were built around the chosen boulders, giving each a distinct personality.

The first sight of a Mushroom House will likely transport many visitors, at least those with a touch of romance in their soul, to some favorite fictional snuggery. Some might recall a favorite fairy tale set in the Black Forest. Others will be transported to J.R.R. Tolkein’s Hobbiton, Toad Hall from "Wind in the Willows" or maybe even Smurf Village.

Spring getaways: 7 small Ohio towns and villages perfect for your next day trip

Although Young had little formal training – he studied architecture at the University of Michigan for a short time before giving up on traditional pedagogy – his buildings have a respect for their setting reminiscent of those designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright (although many people might prefer Young’s less disciplined, more fanciful style).

Most of the houses are still private homes, set on quiet residential streets in three distinct clusters.

The Charlevoix Historical Society offers walking tours of the Mushroom Houses that include interesting anecdotes and stories about Young and his creations. Visitors can also pick up a map and brochure at the historical society museum to take their own self-guided tour.

For visitors who want to do more than just look, several of the original houses are also available for overnight rentals .

Young also designed two Charlevoix hotels, which still host guests: Weathervane Terrace Inn and The Earl, originally Earl Young’s Weathervane Lodge .

One great way to experience an Earl Young building up close – without an overnight commitment – is to dine at the Young-designed Weathervane Inn Restaurant. The restaurant is located on the Pine River, the channel that connects Lake Michigan through downtown Charlevoix to Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix.

Diners have a front-row seat to watch the busy boat traffic that comes through the channel when the drawbridge on U.S. 31, adjacent to the restaurant, opens every half-hour or as needed.

Visitors will also find plenty more to see and do while exploring Charlevoix’s bustling and tourist-friendly downtown and the surrounding area. Visit online visitcharlevoix.com for more information.

Posted: May 11, 2024 | Last updated: May 11, 2024

Journeys through Vermont have a special storybook quality – scenic routes wind through wild forests and mountain valleys, or across old wooden bridges to river mills and heritage towns. In contrast to its epic landscapes, Vermont’s urban centers are tiny – even state capital Montpelier has a small-town feel. But each settlement is rich with history and tradition. Here, we’ve rounded up the region’s most charming towns, a string of which can be visited on your own fairy-tale adventure.

Weston oozes old-world charm with quaint village stores and galleries, clapboard houses and a parish church knitted into a pastoral setting of watermills, waterfalls and forests. Catch a local performance at the Weston Theater Company and then use the town as a springboard for exploring the Green Mountain National Forest.

Catch a local performance at the Weston Theater Company and then use the town as a springboard for exploring the Green Mountain National Forest.

The picture-perfect village of Waits River is so enchanting that it features on postcards and even jigsaw puzzles. And if you're in eastern Vermont, it’s well worth making a detour to snap your own photos, especially in fall when the surrounding canopy explodes in red and gold. Though tiny, the riverside settlement of cute barns and homesteads has a striking white Methodist church and its vintage schoolhouse is listed on the USA's National Register of Historic Places.

Waits River, Orange County

A classic New England village chock full of traditional shops selling arts and crafts and local produce, Chester dates back to the 1700s and its Stone Village Historic District and Chester Village Historic District preserve many of its architectural treasures. But the town is more than just a pretty place: it also hosts festivals celebrating Vermont culture, including the Winter Carnival, Chester Fall Festival and the Big Buzz Chainsaw Carving Festival.

Chester, Windsor County

With a downtown stuffed with interesting independent stores, coffee shops and architectural gems such as the Creamery Covered Bridge (pictured), Brattleboro has more than its fair share of New England charm. Originally growing up around the Connecticut River, it was once a manufacturing center and its old converted mills still hug the riverbanks today, reinvigorated by a thriving arts community. Among the notable buildings nearby is the former lodge of famous writer Rudyard Kipling.

A gorgeous little town of white wooden clapboard houses, traditional stores and sleepy streets, Dorset is pocket-sized but perfectly formed. A gleaming man-made marvel filled with water, the nearby Dorset Marble Quarry was the first of its kind in the US, supplying the stone for notable buildings including the New York Public Library. The quarry is now popular with sightseers and local cliff-jumpers. Dorset is also a gateway to Emerald Lake State park, where you can go kayaking and hiking.

Dorset, Bennington County

History-rich Bennington was founded more than 250 years ago close to the site of an important battle in the American Revolutionary War, today commemorated by the 305-foot (93m) Bennington Battle Memorial. Among the many preserved buildings is the Park-McCullough Historic House, one of the best examples of Victorian architecture in the whole of New England. It’s also something of a hub for covered bridges with five photogenic crossings within an easy drive.

Bennington, Bennington County

Perhaps the prettiest town in all of southern Vermont, Grafton is nestled in the Green Mountains and is still picture-perfect thanks to a careful restoration program established in the 1960s. Steeped in history, the Grafton Inn at the center of the town is one of the oldest still-open inns in the US. In winter it makes a magical setting for activities like snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing, while the Grafton Trails and Outdoor Center offers biking and hiking in the warmer months.

It’s worth visiting Jericho just to see its gorgeous old red stone mill perched precipitously over a rocky gorge (it's now the base for the Jericho Historical Society). Be sure to check out the Jericho Center Country Store, too, which is one of the oldest of its kind in Vermont. Another highlight is Galusha House, former home of the namesake Vermont governor, which was built in 1790 and is listed on the USA's National Register of Historic Places.

This waterside town rounds the shore of Lake Champlain and is almost an extension of Burlington, though it has a charm all of its own. At Shelburne Farms, visitors can taste the finest local maple syrup and Vermont cheeses, while the enormous and fascinating Shelburne Museum is housed in heritage buildings and stuffed with historic artifacts, art and Americana. Check out the beautiful old paddle-wheel steamer that's dry-docked outside.

The hills are alive with the sound of music in Stowe, which was home to the von Trapp family after they escaped Austria during the Second World War. Today travelers can stop by the Trapp Family Lodge and even stay the night. Tucked beneath Vermont’s highest peak, Mount Mansfield, Stowe’s quaint storefronts and homesteads, white-steepled church and magical mountain views make it a classic New England town. For outdoorsy types and hikers the town is a gateway to Smugglers' Notch State Park.

Stowe, Lamoille County

A picturesque town arranged along a meandering river with a cute covered bridge, Waitsfield shelters in a verdant valley between the Green Mountains and the Northfield range. It's traditionally a farming community and its gorgeous 150-year-old farmsteads now house cozy B&Bs, while visitors will find craft beer spots such as Lawson's Finest Liquids. The town is also a hub for outdoor sports including skiing during the wintertime.

The Burke Mountain Ski Area offers snowy runs in winter, while the town is a hub for biking, hiking and swimming in the warmer months. Freshwater lakes including Lake Willoughby provide more opportunity for adventure.

Just a short distance from Montpelier, Barre is a close-knit community deep in the Green Mountains of central Vermont. Visitors can learn about its long history at the Granite Museum that sits inside an old processing shed listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. The local granite was used by the area’s Scottish immigrants to erect a monument to famous Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1899, which still stands today in downtown Barre.

Barre, Washington County

This centuries-old mill town is now home to a college and a burgeoning craft brewery and distillery scene that can be sampled on the Middlebury Tasting Trail. Set on Otter Creek, Middlebury has oodles of history too, and you can soak it all up at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History or the Vermont Folklife Center. As well as a collection of gorgeous heritage buildings, the town is home to Vermont’s oldest covered wooden bridge – Pulp Mill Bridge – which dates back to 1820.

Middlebury, Addison County

Full of rural charm, rambling old houses and restored farmsteads, Randolph was built on agriculture, and its curved red barns, covered wooden road bridge and old railroad station hark back to days gone by. Travelers tracing Vermont’s history can follow in the footsteps of the first settlers in Westminster, which is the state’s oldest town, chartered in 1735. On the border with the state of New Hampshire, the rural town was once named Township Number One and its backstory includes being the first capital of the Republic of Vermont, which was independent from 1777 until 1791 when it was incorporated into the United States.

On the outskirts of Vermont’s most populated city, Burlington, is the timeless haven of Williston, which makes a great alternative base for exploring the epic landscapes of the Green Mountains. Harrisburg vs Istanbul: A tale of two cities and their airport lounges | Travel Views

Harrisburg vs Istantbul: A Tale of two cities and their airport lounged

The Turkish Airlines Business Lounge at the new Istanbul airport offers more than 70,000 square feet of restaurants, cafes, and entertainment to while away the travel hours. Joyce M. Davis

Airport lounges can be a most welcome respite for harried travelers, especially those traveling many hours overseas. And these days, with flight delays, packed planes and sky-high prices at airport restaurants, airport lounges are more desirable than ever.

But all airport lounges are not the same. The one at Harrisburg International Airport just may be among the worst in the world. And the Turkish Airlines Business Lounge in Istanbul may be among the best.

Harrisburg International Airport

These two airports certainly represent opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to lounges for first class and business travelers. The differences between HIA’s lounge and the one in Istanbul’s new airport couldn’t be starker.

First, it seems anyone can just walk into what purports to be the business lounge at the Harrisburg airport, though few travelers seem to know that. On the day I entered, there was no one at the reception area, and no one checked to see if I had a business class ticket or other credential to allow entry. There were five people in lounge, and the atmosphere was modern and clean, but far from luxurious and spacious.

The HIA lounge is a fraction of the size of the two in Istanbul, which together boast almost 140,000 square feet of plush sofas, reclining sleep-chairs, work places and even sleep alcoves.

HIA has two small rooms, one with a few chairs and counters, the other a meeting space with board-room styled table and chairs. There’s a refrigerator in one end of the room with bottled water and packaged mints at the reception area. That’s it. There isn’t even a bathroom in the lounge; you have to go outside to the one in the airport.

Most business lounges in the United States and around the world, including at BWI and the Philadelphia airport, offer at least a quiet, inviting space with comfortable seating, as well as free food and drinks, often including wine, spirits, soda, coffee, and tea. And most offer well maintained bathrooms. Some provide spa-like showers, with toiletries and towels. That’s a real plus for international travelers emerging from a transatlantic flight.

Istanbul’s business lounge would put many around the world to shame, but few are as spartan as the one at HIA, which doesn’t even have a coffee machine.

Compare that to Istanbul’s Turkish Air Business Lounge that offers almost 70,000 square feet of coffee and drink bars, luxury shops, restaurants, cafes, play areas for kids, work hub with desks and USB ports, as well as spotless bathrooms and showers.

The airport actually has both a Business Lounge for Turkish Air top-tier ticket holders and those with Star Alliance, which includes United and a myriad of other international airlines. There’s also the nearby “Miles&Smiles” Lounge, with another 70,000 square feet for travelers holding elite credit cards who are Star Alliance travelers.

These lounges are virtual cities, featuring everything from golf and flying simulators to an art gallery and a movie theatre. There’s a room with giant screens featuring videos of world-acclaimed soccer stars. And there’s even special access for people in wheelchairs.

Once inside Istanbul’s luxury village, everything is free. That’s right, you can get non-stop wine, spirits, sodas, expressos, cappuccinos, lasagna, pizza, salads, all sorts of pastries and deserts, without paying a single lira. Did I mention the baklava and Turkish coffee?

The question most travelers want to know is how to get into these places.

At most airport lounges, you have to present a boarding pass for a business or first-class ticket to enter. Some lounges accept Priority Pass, which travelers can purchase for as little as $99 per year. Be warned, though, not all lounges accept Priority Pass, and lounges that do accept it may not be in every terminal of larger airports.

Having a Priority Pass is not a slam dunk for access to all business lounges, domestically or internationally. And it can be confusing and frustrating trying to find what lounge in what terminal at what airport accepts Priority Pass or any of the elite credit cards for entry,

Some airport lounges allow entry to people who hold some upper-end credit cards like the American Express Platinum card. The card guarantees access to American Express’s Centurion Lounges, which provide generous amenities like free Wi-fi, food, drinks, and comfortable seating. But not every airport has a Centurion Lounge, and it could be in a terminal far, far away from where you take off.

Holders of Platinum American Express cards can gain entry into Delta’s business lounges even without business or first-class tickets, but only if they are flying Delta that day. An Amex Platinum card with an American Airlines ticket won’t cut it.

Some airlines offer one-day passes to their clubs. And if they want to skip the ticket requirements, travelers can simply buy membership into the lounge clubs. United Airlines offers club memberships between $500- $650 annually. American advertises new annual memberships between $750-$850.

If you travel a lot, the cost is worth it to access most airport lounges abroad and in the United States. Just don’t expect much at the lounge in Harrisburg.
