"That won't be an issue" Tiger Woods to use golf cart in future Tour events

Six-time European Tour winner believes Tiger Woods will take the PGA Tour Champions up with their offer of a golf cart in 2026.

Tiger Woods will more than likely take up the opportunity to use a golf cart on the PGA Tour Champions when he turns 50 at the end of next year, six-time European Tour winner Paul Broadhurst has told The Mirror. 

Broadhurst, 58, believes there is a great deal of hope at the over 50s PGA Tour Champions that Woods, 48, will compete in a number of their tournaments on the schedule when he reaches the magic milestone on 30 December 2025.

Woods has been playing a limited schedule so far this season as a result of his continued recovery from ankle surgery last season.

That came more than two years after a horror car crash in Los Angeles in February 2021. 

The 15-time major champion has also had his fair share of back surgeries down the years, something that has plagued the latter stages of his PGA Tour career. 

Woods returned to action last month by setting a new cuts made record at The Masters. 

But he would unfortunately have to play 23 holes on the Friday and that appeared to take the wind out of his sails heading into the weekend as he went on to finish solo 60th in dead last. 

The former World No.1 made it clear at Augusta National he would continue to tee it up in tournaments for as long as he believes he can still win on the circuit. 

Woods has this year decided to take up a role on the PGA Tour policy board as he attempts to help the circuit thrash out their ongoing framework agreement with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Woods needs to capture one more tournament on the PGA Tour to set an outright wins record of 83. 

He currently shares the record with late great Sam Snead. 

The toughest part these days is walking 72 holes, declared Woods last month.

Hitting shots is not a problem, he concluded. 

So could the lure of a golf cart and a more relaxed life on the PGA Tour Champions in two years' time be something Woods gives consideration to in 2026?

Broadhurst certainly thinks so, and believes Woods will follow in his own footsteps in taking up the offer of a golf cart on the PGA Tour Champions.

The 58-year-old Englishman has had dispensation since last year to use a golf buggy as he is no longer able to walk 18 holes due to his ankle, which requires medication and surgery. 

Regular PGA Tour Champions events are also staged over 54 holes, which could be another big positive for Woods. Senior majors, however, are 72. 

Broadhurst landed his sixth PGA Tour Champions and first in a golf cart at the Invited Celebrity Classic last month.

He told The Mirror :

"The tour are hoping Tiger is going to play the Champions Tour, no question.  "They are really hopeful and I think he has given out signs that he is more than happy to play once he turns 50. "He will be able to take a cart - that won’t be an issue for him. He will perhaps be looking forward to playing without walking around."

Broadhurst's comments about Woods echo those of record 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus.

In 2023, Nicklaus revealed a conversation he had with Woods about using a golf cart but only when reaches the seniors tour . 

Nicklaus said: 

"I told him, I said 'Tiger you’re eligible to take a cart', but he said 'I'm not going to do that, when I get to the senior tour I will.   "He'd love to play the senior tour. That's what I love about Tiger, he’s a competitor, he loves competition." 

Woods will return to action at next week's second major of the season, the US PGA at Valhalla.

He went to 'scout' the course this afternoon. 

Woods was last week handed a special invite into the US Open in June.

Citrus Connection to launch downtown golf cart service in Lake Wales

Lake Wales residents need not know a 3-wood from a putter to hitch a ride on a newly arriving golf cart.

Citrus Connection is launching a lunchtime service on the low-speed vehicles that will circulate among downtown restaurants and shops.

The Squeeze , which begins Monday, replicates a specialized service the mass-transit agency introduced in Lakeland three years ago. The “microtransit” offering will run between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday on a 12-minute loop, according to Citrus Connection, Polk County’s public transportation operator.

The eight-passenger cart will pick up and release passengers at seven locations.

The Lake Wales Community Redevelopment Agency has agreed to spend about $112,000 for the first year of service, which includes the purchase of two golf carts and the cost of operator training. The cost will drop to approximately $75,000 is subsequent years, said Eric Marshall, a spokesman for the city.

The Squeeze is the only public transit golf cart system in the country, said Tom Phillips, executive director of Citrus Connection. The agency started the lunchtime service in Lakeland in 2021, and the initial launch did not do particularly well, Phillips acknowledged.

After some adjustments, the Squeeze caught on with workers and others in downtown Lakeland, and the service is now averaging 400 to 500 riders a week, Phillips said. The Lakeland Downtown Development Authority covers the cost.

The introduction in Lake Wales marks the second launch of a transportation service in less than a year. In October, Citrus Connection started running a “circulator” bus six days a week, collecting riders in the Northwest neighborhood and making stops at shopping centers and a health department office.

That service emerged from a finding that Northwest residents had high rates of food insecurity and health inequity, partly because of limited transportation. Ridership on the circulator bus has far exceeded expectations, Phillips said.

“And then, all of a sudden, it was like, ‘Well, we want the Squeeze, too,’” Phillips said. “And then six weeks later, we're in front of the CRA, and they're funding the Squeeze. So it's really cool that, of all the communities in Polk County, they're managing growth the best through transit, for sure.”

Lake Wales will own the two golf carts, which are gas-powered, though Citrus Connection is exploring electric options, Phillips said. The vehicles are legal to travel on any Florida road with a speed limit of 35 mph or less.

Citrus Connection encourages those at the wheel of the golf carts to do more than simply drive, assuming the roles of tour guides, Phillips said. Drivers in Lakeland have become deeply familiar with restaurants and shops near the downtown route, allowing them to answer questions or dispense information to riders about menus and business details, along with doses of local history.

“In a way, they'll kind of be like a mini Chamber of Commerce on wheels,” Phillips said. “Because that's one of the things that we learned from the lunch Squeeze and the dinner Squeeze and the special events Squeeze in Lakeland is, you have to be like a carnival barker and solicit rides.”

All drivers undergo background checks and drug screenings, Phillips said.

“The majority of the people that ride the lunch Squeeze in Lakeland could walk,” he said. “They're choosing to ride the Squeeze because it's fun and they like the drivers.”

The golf carts are not accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Phillips said, but Citrus Connection will have a van with a wheelchair lift ready in Lake Wales for anyone unable to use the Squeeze service.

The golf carts will not run during rain or other inclement weather.

During a presentation last week at a Lake Wales City Commission workshop, Erin Killebrew-Kinlaw of Citrus Connection said the city’s ridership numbers are encouraging. From November 2022 through March 2024, the agency counted nearly 34,000 boardings from bus stops in Lake Wales.

Citrus Connection operates four routes in the city, after discontinuing another that traveled to the Polk County Jail in Frostproof, said Killebrew-Kinlaw, the agency’s director of external affairs.

In addition, the circulator has averaged about 700 riders in its first six months.

The cost to Lake Wales for Citrus Connection service rose from about $143,000 a year to about $173,000 with the addition of the circulator bus.

Meanwhile, Phillips said that he anticipates further expansion of the Squeeze service. Officials in Winter Haven and Bartow have expressed interest in adopting golf cart routes, likely to be paid for through CRA funds, he said.

The Sunday Golf Big Rig cart bag is a fully loaded ultra lightweight cart bag with ample, purposeful storage, full length 14 way dividers, and high end details.

Introduction

Sunday Golf made its name on true Sunday golf bags like the Loma XL [review HERE ].  In other words, bags that are smaller and lighter than a typical carry bag designed for significantly fewer clubs.  This review is all about their first offering in the full size cart bag space – the Big Rig cart bag.

I have to first mention that the pictures online and on Sunday Golf’s website don’t do this bag justice.  The Sunday Golf Big Rig cart bag has the looks of a regular cart bag, but up close it has some impressive details.  Although the outer shell is made up of the typical nylon material, it is watermarked with a subtle honeycomb design that gives the bag a premium look.  Every detail seems to be upgraded to some degree.  The top front pocket uses a luxury panel with an embossed Sunday Golf logo while the other storage pockets have heavy duty zippers that exude premium.

The 14 way dividers at the top are full length and sport an anti-catch putter slot at the front.  Even the chromed out accessories clip elevates the look of the Big Rig cart bag.  Overall, the matte black bag has a large footprint but is a step above your regular cart bag.

The Sunday Golf Big Rig cart bag is loaded with features.  First is the top.  It has full length 14 way dividers with easy to grab carrying handles on either side.  While the debate for 14 way dividers is always a hot topic, Sunday Golf’s specialized holster prevents clubs from banging together especially on rough terrain.

The top front pocket designed for holding a rangefinder is fully magnetic for easy access.  It doubles as a cart strap sleeve for full security knowing your clubs aren’t going anywhere while on the course.

Each of the remaining 12 pockets on the Big Rig has a purpose.  A large lower front pocket is lined to keep drinks cold and can hold four cans comfortably.  Just to the right of the cooler is a pocket I was especially fond of.  It sports two interior stretch sleeves that can hold precious items like ball markers or divot tools.  In addition to a variety of large garment pockets and a velour lined valuables pocket, the rear strap makes it easy to transport to and from the parking lot.

Performance

If I were to compare this bag to only other 14 way bags, it would win out over the competition .  Not only are the dividers full length but the rigid top prevents clubs from getting scuffed up during the round.  It also makes getting clubs in and out of your bag effortless .  Occasionally I found some of my MCC Plus Four grips were caught on the way out but because of the rigid dividers, it was easy to redirect and get the clubs out without any additional frustration.

Although there are dozens of cart bags with ample storage, Sunday Golf really took the time to design a specified use for each compartment.   From large garment pockets to the cooler pocket and small valuables pouch, everything has a place which is great in keeping things organized on the course.

At seven pounds without clubs, this is one of the lightest cart bags I have tested which makes it ideal for all the push cart users.  If all of these features aren’t quite enough for you, you can buy confidently knowing that every bag is backed by their free lifetime warranty.  At $280 , this bag has tremendous value.

There is a ton to love about the new and lightweight Sunday Golf Big Rig cart bag.  The high end touches, 14 way dividers, and ample amount of useful storage compartments make this one of my favorite cart bags for 2024.
