LOMBARDIA’22 Preview: Who Can Win The Race of the Falling Leaves?
Giro di Lombardia Preview: Il Lombardia is the last big race of the 2022 season, okay Paris-Tours is on the Sunday after the ‘race of the falling leaves’ but it’s not what it used to be. Ed Hood looks at the history, route and who can win this very open race.
It can’t be? Het Nieuwsblad was just the other week? But it surely is, the last ‘Monument’ of the season – 253km and 4800 metres of elevation gain – and the prelude to ‘holiday time’ for a lot of professionals with many puling on a new jersey on January 1st 2022 – if they’re lucky, that is.
The Tour of Lombardy or ‘il Lombardia’ as it’s now known. Milan-Sanremo is longer, Liege-Bastogne is tougher and both the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix have more crazed fans, cobbles and beer but Lombardia is the most beautiful of the five ‘Monuments’ which are the bedrock of our sport.
The lakes, the mountains, the red pan tiled roofed villages, the leaves on the turn – magnificent. And even the nickname is lovely; La classica delle foglie morte – ‘Race of the Falling Leaves.’ This will be edition 116 with ‘il Campionissimo’ Fausto Coppi the Master, winning five of those; but his rival, Gino Bartali is the ‘stat master’ on podiums with nine – three wins, four second places and two third places. In recent times Italy’s now retired ‘Little Prince’ Damiano Cunego has been most successful with wins in 2004, 2007 and 2008.
The 253km route will depart from Bergamo and finish in Como. The last 60km features a sequence of tough climbs passing through Ghisallo, San Fermo della Battaglia, Civiglio, and again through San Fermo, before the finish line on the beautiful Como lakefront.
As a Monument the race will have all 18 World Tour teams and seven ‘wild card’ pro continental teams. Youngest man in the race will be Belgium and BORA’s Tour de l’Avenir winning ‘wonder kid,’ Cian Uijtdebroeks at just 19 years-of-age and oldest man is Spain’s former World Champion Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) at 42 years-of-age.
It’s the remarkable Murcian’s last UCi race – although one suspects there will be big bucks ‘farewell’ crits – he had this to say of his farewell; “Italy is a country that I have always loved and where I have always liked to race and finish with competitive cycling in Lombardy, it gives me immense pleasure.” And the man is STILL riding well, in the recent Italian late season semi-classics he was second in the Coppa Agostoni and fourth in the Giro dell’Emilia. A win is perhaps too much to ask for but a podium is certainly possible.
Domenico Pozzovivo (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Materiaux & Italy) shares the most starts and finishes stat with 14 and 12, respectively.
And on the same stats is the most successful rider in the rider on past performances, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Qazaqstan & Italy) who has two wins and a fifth place off his 14 starts. It’s also the Sicilian’s last UCi race and he said; “For me it will be a great thrill and a great honour to close in Il Lombardia which is one of the races that I have loved most in my career.” But a podium seems unlikely for the 37 years-old.
Second on ‘stats,’ Valverde has two second places; third on ‘stats’ is Rigoberto Urán (EF Education–EasyPost & Colombia) who has been third on three occasions. ‘Rigo’ is enjoying good form with top 10 finishes in the Vuelta on GC, Agostoni and Emilia, a podium?
In addition to those old War Horses and their past glories there are another four previous past winners on the start list: Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ & France) there’s nothing to suggest he’ll, ‘do a ride’ but this is Pinot, remember?
Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo & The Netherlands) big, strong, solid, give him 50 metres and. . .
Jakob Fuglsang (Israel-Premier Tech & Denmark) a top ride is highly unlikely from the 37 years-old Dane.
Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates & Slovenia) despite a lack lustre Worlds it would be foolish to discount the 2021 winner, second in Emilia and his win in the Tre Valli Varesine on Tuesday confirms the form is still good and he must start as race favourite.
There are always surprises at Lombardy, late season form/blues, the hand to hand combat for UCi points and desperation for results to secure a contract for 2023 all play a part but other names to conjure with are: Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl & France) : He’ll want to end what hasn’t been a great season for him on a high, the team morale couldn’t be higher after Wollongong and he was very frisky in the Coppa Bernocchi.
Roman Bardet (DSM & France) : Good in the Canadian races and Worlds, if his head is right then he could win, he loves those descents. . .
Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën & France) : The Quebec winner would have expected more from Wollongong, here’s his chance to make amends.
Enric Mas (Movistar & Spain) : As Sean Connery might say; ‘shureley theresh shome mishtake?’ Enric winning a race? Yes indeed, after his strong Vuelta he was top 10 in Agostoni and won Emilia – the percorso suits him, so. . .
Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious & Slovenia) : Hot off his CRO Race win and with that drop to the finish it could suit this Demon Descender. . .
Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Deceuninck & The Netherlands): Prior to his Worlds debacle his form was hot with three straight wins in quality races. He’ll be eager to end the season on a high – just as long as no one mentions; ‘Novotel.’ As we go to press, MvdP has decided to forget Lombardy and head for the other side of Italy, the Veneto and the Gravel Worlds.
Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma & Denmark) : with two stage wins and second on GC in the CRO Race, the Tour de France winner is back in business and seeing him win here isn’t hard to envisage.
Adam Yates (INEOS Grenadiers & GB) : he won in Deutschland and was strong in Canada, the percorso suits his characteristics; he was third here last year. . .
As said, for sure there’ll be a surprise in the final mix – but that’s what makes bike racing so entertaining. PEZ will be covering the race with erudite reporting and Cor Vos’s stunning images – DO NOT touch that dial.
Go for Moretti ‘La Rosa’ as your race watching tipple, you’ll thank me.

Il Lombardia 2023 overview
On October 7, the men’s peloton will take on the final Monument of the season: Il Lombardia . Il Lombardia is one of the oldest and most prestigious races in Italy and the final event in the esteemed Trittico di Autunno, or the ‘Autumn treble’, which includes its sister races Milano-Torino and Gran Piemonte . It’s also the fifth and final Monument of the cycling season and, arguably, the most evocative and visually arresting of the lot.
18 WorldTour teams and seven ProTeams will take to the start of this year’s race, with UAE Team Emirates heading to Como with the two-time defending champion, Tadej Pogačar . The Slovenian will be sure to face stiff competition, however, from the likes of Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and his compatriot, Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma).
Known as the ‘race of the falling leaves’ thanks to its autumn spot in the calendar, Il Lombardia takes in a challenging route around Lake Como in the north of Italy. The first edition took place in 1905, making the Tour of Lombardy the third oldest of the Monuments.
Since 2014, the race has taken place on a route between Bergamo and Como, with the direction and finish alternating yearly. This year’s edition is set to finish in Bergamo. More so than the other Monuments, this race is packed with long climbs, making it a proper climbers’ classic. Not just the punchy efforts we see in the spring, but long and dragging efforts.
The two most iconic climbs on the route are the Madonna del Ghisallo , near Como, and the Passo di Ganda , near Bergamo. Depending on the direction of the race, both of these tend to be decisive points for attacks to go.
Held over the picturesque hills that punctuate the region of Lombardy in northwest Italy, Il Lombardia is one of the most beautiful bike races on the entire racing calendar and, as the race falls at the end of the cycling season, a timely reminder that all good and beautiful things must eventually come to an end.

Il Lombardia 2023 route profile
The full route for this year’s Il Lombardia was announced in recent weeks and is 238.1km in length, with seven categorised climbs between Como and Bergamo. In recent years, the route has stayed largely the same, but there are subtle differences between each edition.
Starting in Como, the famous Madonna del Ghisallo climb will come early on in this year’s edition. At 8.8km in length but with a gradient of only 3.9%, it’s certainly not the hardest climb on the route, but it’s an early test and an opportunity for riders to attack. It’s the church at the top of the hill that makes this climb so iconic, as the Madonna del Ghisallo has been declared the patron saint of cyclists, and the church contains a small museum dedicated to cycling.
In the middle of the day, it’s the back-to-back combination of the Dossena climb and the Zambla Alta that will really begin the whittling-down process, and separate the strong climbers from the rest of the peloton. The first climb, the Dossena, comes in at 11.1km at a 6.1% gradient, and then there’s only a kilometre or two of descending before the road starts rising again to Zambla. This climb is more gentle, averaging 3.3% with a steeper ramp towards the top, but it’s 9.8km in length, making a total of almost 20km straight of climbing. With still more than 50km to go to the finish, this is why Lombardia is so hard.
The final big climb is the Passo di Ganda, a 9.3km effort at 7.1%. This should draw out the key move of the day: you need to be in front here if you’re going to win. From there, there is a long descent towards Bergamo, with one last climb before the finish line. The Colle Aperto is just a small kick at 1.3km in length with a 7% gradient, but it can be a big challenge after a long day - or the last chance to attack a small group.
Il Lombardia 2023 contenders
Unlike the other Monuments, Il Lombardia is a race made for the pure climbers, so it’s often won by the best climber or GC rider of the year. One of the strongest riders who’s yet to win here is Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step). His first outing at Lombardia was memorable for all the wrong reasons, after a crash on a corner saw him go over the edge of a low bridge in dramatic fashion. Since then, though, the 23-year-old has won the Vuelta, two Liège-Bastogne-Lièges and the World Championships, so he’s definitely a big favourite despite his previous bad luck. One of the strongest climbers in the peloton with a proven pedigree in one-day races, Evenepoel will win Lombardia one day, it’s just a question of when.
What many fans will be hoping for in October is a head-to-head between Evenepoel and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). The pair have gone up against each other relatively few times in their careers so far, and Lombardia would be the perfect place to do it. Pogačar is the defending champion, having won in both 2021 and 2022, so he definitely has a good chance at making that a hat-trick, a feat so far only achieved by Fausto Coppi and Alfredo Binda. What’s more, only two riders have ever won Flanders and Lombardia in the same year - Rik van Looy (1959) and Hennie Kuiper (1981) - so Pogačar would join a very exclusive list of names. The Slovenian is almost unbeatable in one-day races when he puts his mind to it, so it will be hard to look past him if he lines up in Como this year.
Finally, it may be something of a dream, but a rider who could take a fairytale win here is Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ). The Frenchman is set to retire at the end of this season, and Il Lombardia is actually slated to be his final-ever race. Pinot won here in 2018, so he certainly has the ability, and he has been keen to prove that his last season is not a question of fading away, he is still very much in the frame of racing. Winning a Monument will be a big ask, but expect to see Pinot try to stay involved in the action for as long as possible.
For a full list of our contenders, keep an eye out for our preview, which will be released in the week leading up to the race.

Il Lombardia race history
The first edition of Il Lombardia was held in 1905 - when it was known as Milano-Milano, making it older than both the Giro d’Italia and Milano-Sanremo, two of Italy’s most historic bike races. It was an idea conceived by a journalist, to pit some of the best Italian cyclists against each other, and it quickly attracted a strong start list. The race also established itself as the last big race in Italy and Europe, and was renamed the Giro di Lombardia in 1907.
It’s also one of the few races on the calendar to experience very little interruption over the course of its lifetime. In fact, only two editions have ever been cancelled in the race’s history, in 1943 and 1944 due to World War II.
Now on its 116th edition, the race is well established as one of cycling’s Monument Classics. Despite the route changing countless times over the course of its history, the race has developed a reputation for sending riders up some of the most feared and fabled climbs in the sport of cycling - like the Madonna del Ghisallo, Muro di Sormano and Civiglio, climbs that are heavenly to watch riders struggle up from afar, but truly hellish to ride yourself.

The Muro di Sormano is one of the most feared climbs in all of cycling
Going into the thirties, forties and fifties, Lombardia became the showground for the golden era of Italian cycling, frequently hosting thrilling battles between Alfredo Binda, Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi. Coppi’s solo attacks from the Madonna del Ghisallo all the way to the finish helped cement the climb’s legendary status and the prestige of the race as a whole.
Coppi, in fact, holds the record in this race for the most wins, with five taken between 1946 and 1954. The Italian icon won all five of his Il Lombardia titles solo and in almost the same fashion each time, by attacking on the incredibly steep ramps of the Madonna del Ghisallo before time trialing his way to the finish line in Milan.
Several other legends of Italian cycling have won this race, helping the home nation build their colossal tally of 69 wins in the event. Riders like Paolo Bettini, Francesco Moser, Damiano Cunego, Costante Girardengo and Vincenzo Nibali have all taken multiple victories here, each one helping to stamp Italy’s dominance all over the race. In the second half of the 20th century, more huge names adorn the list of winners: Sean Kelly, Eddy Merckx, and Roger De Vlaeminck.
Nibali won his home Monument while wearing the Italian tricolore
Since the Coppi and Bartali years, the race has moved its finish from Milan to Como which has, in turn, changed the entire identity of the race. What was once considered a race for the all-rounders and classics specialists, is now a race for the purest of climbers. Many describe this race as one of the most arduous of the entire season; with countless leg-breaking climbs and a mammoth distance of 250km+ to conquer it’s no surprise why.
Due to the incredibly attritional nature of the route, and the many climbs from which riders can launch stinging attacks from, we typically see solo riders emerge victorious. Since Philippe Gilbert’s first victory in the race in 2009, we’ve seen nine riders arrive at the finish line solo. Jakob Fuglsang (2020), Bauke Mollema (2019), Thibaut Pinot (2018) and Vincenzo Nibali (2017 and 2015) are just several of the most recent riders to do this.
Several riders have won the race in a sprint finish from a small group in recent years however, most notably Tadej Pogačar who beat the home favourite Fausto Masnada in a two-up sprint to claim the 2021 title. The Slovenian superstar defended his title in 2022 to become the first rider since Joaquim Rodríguez in 2013 to win back-to-back editions.
Lombardia is also the only Monument which has ever been won by a Latin American rider, thanks to Esteban Chaves’ win here in 2017.

Il Lombardia 2023: Preview, full schedule and how to watch live action
The 117th edition of Giro di Lombardia is scheduled for Saturday 7 October with stars Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel vying for the final cycling monument of the season.
'The Race of the Falling Leaves': Il Lombardia 2023 marks the conclusion of the road cycling season for many riders in the peloton.
This edition of the race, the fifth and final monument of the year, starts in Como and ends in Bergamo , covering a distance of 238 kilometres with over 4,400 metres of elevation gain.
Twenty-five teams, each consisting of seven riders, will participate in the race. Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar will be aiming for a hat-trick, having triumphed in the last two editions.
However, Pogacar will face a strong challenge from his compatriot, the 2023 Giro d’italia winner Primoz Roglic , and the former La Vuelta champion Remco Evenepoel .

The route for Il Lombardia 2023 spans 238 kilometres long and features a series of challenging climbs in the Lombardy region of Italy.
It closely mirrors the route of the 2021 edition, where Pogacar secured his first victory in the race, ahead of Italian rider Fausto Masnada .
In total, there are seven categorised climbs, with the pivotal moment likely to occur at the Passo Di Ganda (9.2km 7.3%), whose summit is reached 32 kilometres from the finish.
The final hurdle, situated three kilometres before the finish line in Bergamo, is the Colle Aperto climb (1.3 km 7.0%). Riders lacking a strong finishing kick will try to open a gap here to avoid a sprint finish after the final descent into the city.
Il Lombardia 2023: Riders to wartch
A thrilling showdown is expected on the steep climbs of Lombardy, featuring cycling heavyweights Tadej Pogacar , Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel .
Two-time Tour de France championr Pogacar aims to join the ranks of Sean Kelly , Gino Bartoli , Henri Pélissier , Costante Girardengo , Gaetano Belloni and Damiano Cunego with three Il Lombardia victories.
Tokyo 2020 Olympic time trial champion Roglic is set to compete in his final race for Jumbo-Visma, as he confirmed his departure before Saturday’s Giro dell'Emilia, which he won ahead of fellow Slovenian Pogacar.
Time trial world champion Evenepoel has not raced since the Vuelta a España, where he claimed the mountains classification besides three stages. Having won the Liège - Bastogne - Liège this season and the previous, the Belgian has proved that he has the strength to win another hilly monument.
Enric Mas crossed the finish line in Como alongside Pogacar last year, ultimately losing out to the Slovenian in the sprint. In the Giro dell'Emilia, the Spaniard finished fourth, indicating he's a strong contender for victory again this year.
Il Lombardia also marks the conclusion of Thibaut Pinot ’s illustrious career. The 33-year-old Frenchman claimed the Italian classic in 2018 and has notched stage wins in all the three Grand Tours.
Il Lombardia 2023: Schedule
Il Lombardia is to start at 10:35 Central European Time (CET) on Saturday 7 October.
The riders are expected to reach the finish line in Bergamo around 17:00.

Tour of Lombardy 12 Oct 2024
The Tour of Lombardy (Giro di Lombardia) is a classic one-day cycling race in Lombardy, northwest Italy. Traditionally held in early October each year, it is known as “The Race of the Falling Leaves” and is the last of the 5 Monument races on the professional cycling calendar.
The first edition of this prestigious race was held on 12 November 1905, under the name Milano-Milano. Soon after this inaugural edition's success, the race became a permanent fixture at the end of the European cycling season. Since 1907, it has been known as the Giro di Lombardia.
The Tour’s route has changed on many occasions over the years- more than any other of the classic races. With a total distance of 253km and a large number of famous climbs, the Tour of Lombardy is considered a climbers' classic and one of the toughest races of the season.

Tour of Lombardy 2020: The Route
The riders set off from Bergamo, which was the epicentre of Italy’s COVID-19 outbreak in March. The race begins with a big loop and after roughly 55 kilometres the Colle Gallo is crested. Then the route once again moves through Bergamo, this time to head northwest on virtually flat terrain.
After the Colle Brianza the race continues to Villa Vergano before descending towards Oggiono. By now, Il Lombardia reaches the peninsula that’s emblematic of the race. Via Lago di Annone and Lago di Pusiano the riders move through Valbrona and descend to the shores of Lake Como.
Following some 10 kilometres along the lake the race reaches Bellagio at the foot of the Madonna del Ghisallo. The iconic climb is 8.6 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 6.2%. Yet, most of the climb slopes at 9% or more, while the steepest ramp (14%) appears just after leaving Bellagio.
The climb to Sormano (5.1 kilometres at 6.6%) is a gentle warm-up for the Muro di Sormano, which is arguably one of the most ferocious climbs around. The narrow road serves sections up to 27%! The Muro is 1.9 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 15.8%.
Following a technical drop to Nesso, the riders turn left and – once again – race along the shores of the Lake Como. Just before entering the town with the same name another lefthander leads back into the hills for the last 20 kilometres.
First, the Civiglio. This is a 4.2 kilometres climb at 9.8% with steepest ramps at 14%. Straight after the drop it goes back up again to the village San Fermo della Battaglia. This is a 2.7 kilometres climb at 7.2% that tops out at 10% just before the crest. The race concludes with a 5.3 kilometres descent into Como.
Last year, the Tour of Lombardy was played out on virtually the same roads. Bauke Mollema attacked on the Civilio and he managed to hold off the strongest chasers. Alejandro Valverde bested Egan Bernal and Jakob Fuglsang in the sprint for second place.
