Tourist (born February 12, 1987) is the stage name of English electronic musician and producer William Phillips, best known for co-writing the Grammy Award winning song “Stay With Me” alongside James Napier and Sam Smith, hailing from London, England.

Having learned to play the piano from the age of three, the musician began writing his own songs aged 10, discovering his insatiable passion for music. Unable to go out to listen to dance music due to his age, Phillips would scour the internet for pirate radio stations, finding the hottest most emotive dance numbers. The young talent made his personal impact on the music industry with his debut Tourist EP “Tourist” released in March 2012. Introducing Phillips’ danceable yet melodically emotive sound, the EP earned strong reviews upon its release.

The electronic artist went on to release his sophomore EP “Tonight” in 2013 proving extremely popular in the online blogosphere. Marked by synth-inspired vocal accompaniments and more compelling, climatic soundscapes, the record introduced the musician to a much wider audience. Following a period of touring in which time Phillips honed his live skills, Tourist returned in 2014 in what would prove to be a massive year for the London-native. The EP “Patterns” arrived in April 2014 once again showing the huge development in the musician’s style and abilities. Combining the influences of house, UK garage, gospel, and soul music, the record featured singer Lianne La Havas on the titled track, as well as vocalist Will Heard.

On top of his own releases, Phillips co-wrote the Grammy Award winning Sam Smith single “Stay With Me”, which became one of the sounds of 2014 and catapulted Sam Smith to international recognition. The songwriter later contributed to Jessie Ware’s album “Tough Love” on the single “Pieces”, showcasing the many strings to Phillips’ bow.

Live reviews

At an average length of six minutes per track, self taught pianist, Tourist, aka William Phillips is making some of the best pieces of electronic music I've heard in quite a while. Personal favourite 'Your Girl' is an emotional, piano key led masterpiece whike new track 'Together' is a fast paced more club friendly number. His latest 'Patterns' E.P features collaborations with Lianne La Havas on the title track and Will Heard lending his soulful vocals on 'I Can't Keep Up' who you may know for singing on Klangkarussell's chilled summer hit 'Sonnantanz (Sun Don't Shine)', and he does as brilliant a job here for Tourist. I was luckily enough to see him live earlier this year at Live at Leeds. Live, the tracks feel like separate pieces of art, taking their time to build with space for them to breathe. Starting with the underlying beats before vocals are added and the whole track comes together. This is best demonstrated during his remix of Chvrches 'Lies', it sounds nothing like the original. Instead, its an emotional reworking with Lauren Mayberry's Glaswegian vocals calling out, full of heartache. Electronic music with real soul and emotion - Tourist is the master of it!

Amazing music, wonderful and humble guy who is gonna be a big name soon. Listen to Apollo and you won't want to miss this ever!

Venue had a great soundsystem but queues at the bars were bad and awful placement of the free tap water.

He is an exceptionally talented artist. The deep, punchy beats combined will have you jumping your calf muscles a new one. All would have an amazing time if they joined him in concert.

Hailing from South-East London, producer and DJ Will “Tourist” Phillips is known for his compelling take on electronic sounds and intricate production style. With a Grammy under his belt for co-writing Sam Smith's platinum, multi-award-winning "Stay With Me," Tourist commands the spotlight on his own as a self-taught artist.

An affinity for technology and passion for the piano lead to a series of exploratory EPs and singles, finally breaking through with his album U in 2016. His music is laced with somber thematics and a unique grasp of his craft — deep in the feels, these tracks are designed to invoke your emotions. Just this month he’s released “Bunny”, the second single from his forthcoming album titled, Wild .

We are thrilled to welcome Tourist to KCRW for an exclusive guest mix on Metropolis ahead of his DJ set at this year’s Splash House Festival in Palm Springs next weekend.

Tourist: “Sampling is mind-blowing; it’s the biggest advancement in music technology since the early 80s”

British producer, songwriter and label owner Tourist – real name William Phillips – is gearing up to release his first album in three years.

All images: Press

Balancing downbeat moments with glimmers of joy using gradual, emotive synth build-ups, Inside Out is the most club-ready Tourist project to date – especially compared to what he calls his “more downtempo, reflective” albums. Will Phillip’s 2016’s U and 2019’s Everyday and Wild albums are what the Grammy-winning producer says are ideal for “accompanying you on a car journey or on the tube”. Inside Out is also, in many ways, an existential dance music record.

  • READ MORE: “The environment I recorded in is one of the main characters of the album” – Anomalie on debut LP, Galerie

The melancholic yet uplifting album, which manages to find light in the dark and marks a decade of Tourist, came from “pretty weird, sad, personal circumstances”, Will says, having lost a friend due to a heart attack.

“It was bizarre,” he adds, describing it as “like living in a weird vacuum of not being able to be around the people that you need to be around the most.” Writing music, then, helped Will find solace. “It really helped me, just as something to do every day that felt reasonably positive. It’s one of the things that kept me sane throughout the last few years.”

Despite the album being created in the aftermath of a terrible situation, the 35-year-old Londoner approached it with contrasting outlook: to write music that made him feel better.

Tourist

“I wanted to write a record that was celebratory,” he says, having also become a father during the pandemic. “I wanted it to be about the most important things that we all get to reflect on in life.” The impact of his daughter’s birth also changed the way he looks at being an artist; “you realise that you don’t have much time on Earth, but also how quick life can come around, and you zoom out a lot more and think in a long-term way”.

While he was making Inside Out , Will says he also “gravitated towards dance music a lot more – because it felt so visceral”. Whether or not that was due to him being unable to go out because of the pandemic, he longed for what he couldn’t have.

“I wanted to feel a bodily kind of motion,” he says. Having always found that the dance music he loves is “for your head”, Will feels like he summed it all up with Your Love , the album’s lead single. He says the track is his way of “trying to celebrate the love of a friend”. [This song] reminded me why I love music.”

While in the past, Will “shied away from trying to make a tune that was more upfront and direct,” when making Your Love , he had a different approach.

Tourist

“I took away those insecurities and just tried to absolutely go for it – to see if I could make a proper euphoric but also slightly sad house record,” he says, having channeled his lifelong love of French house into the track; “that really thick, melodic, chunky music where it’s not about rhythm but more about the feeling of euphoria and togetherness. It’s one of those tunes that, if I was 12-years-old, I would have loved,” he adds, telling us that he always has his younger self in mind when writing music.

Prior to the lockdown, however, Will intended to make an entirely different and collaborative record in his studio. “[I wanted to] make songs using analogue synths and it was all going to be recorded really nicely. But none of that happened,” he says.

Instead, he pieced it together at home with just his phone, laptop, a Teenage Engineering OP-1 and a small Universal Audio Apollo Twin audio interface. Although he didn’t think it at first, Will looks back on this restricted process as being quite freeing. “I learned huge lessons just by being so limited. It made me realise that you need a lot less than you think to write music”.

Not having his Moog Minimoog Model D or Roland Juno-106 with him at home made Will keen to embrace sampling “as a means to try and find melody and vocals”, he says, describing it as a “liberating” process.

Tourist

“I didn’t have any specific ideas about what I was going to sample,” he adds, saying that he saw the idea of taking a sample and turning it into something different as “like a challenge”.

With this album particularly, he also appreciated the ease of sampling thanks to modern technology; “I used AI software to extract vocals from original tracks, which is something that I could only dream of when I was a young boy”.

With Penelope Trappes, Big Thief, Julianna Barwick, Shakespeare’s Sister and Ellie Goulding among the artists sampled on the record, Inside Out also signifies a full circle moment. In his 2012 breakthrough track Your Girl , which found immense popularity via YouTube music channels at the time, Will sampled Aaliyah’s 1996 track If Your Girl Only Knew

What he loves so much about the art of sampling is the limitless possibilities. “When you think about songs, they’re great, but they feel finite, in a way,” he says. “Whereas sampling also includes the natural world and all of recorded music – every human voice you’ve ever heard. For me, it’s still completely mind-blowing,” he adds, suggesting that sampling is “the biggest advancement in music technology since the early 80s”.

Tourist

For Tourist, the most inspiring part is “being able to re-contextualise and change other people’s music and every sound you’ve ever heard into anything”, he says. “That, for me, is endlessly enjoyable.”

As an artist who is known for layering intricate sounds and contrasting emotions into his music, Will also thinks he has “quite a good instinct of when something is done” – at least compared to friends who tweak granular details until the last moment.

“I’ve always had quite a good grasp on the big picture,” he says, pointing to Lark as an example of a song that “works well for piecing all the bits together; I don’t want to overdo it,” he adds. “It’s about having a good sense of context and also thinking about the people who’ve never heard this before; that last one per cent you change is so unnecessary”.

In terms of its intricate production and sound design, the slow passage of Inside Out ’s opener Speak In Symphony – which was mainly born from Will messing around in Spectrasonics’ Omnisphere – is a case in point. Starting with just two notes, Will explains that he wanted the album to “slowly reveal itself to the listener.

“I really love the idea of people not knowing where the rhythm of a track is,” he says, “and unveiling that to people in kind of a slow way”.

Tourist

This notion also chimes with the fact that Tourist is difficult to define by genre. 10 years have passed since he started the project but Will says, “I still don’t know what the Tourist sound is”.

While he thinks the main threads are “probably melodic, slightly melancholic, electronic-inflected music”, Will finds it far easier to describe his sound via the emotions that he feels when making music.

“I’ve always wanted it make me cry but also feel really happy at the same time.” And, even though he’s gone about it in different ways, that ethos has never changed. “I just love doing that; it’s that slightly sad, slightly happy thing”.

The album’s deeply personal final track, Eternal , is a glistening example of this, too. “[It’s what] it would be like if Brian Eno wrote a melodious breaks-y tune”, Will says. Not only is the lyric “my love is eternal” desperately moving, but the final noise on the record is Will’s daughter’s heartbeats recorded on an ultrasound machine.

“I love making music like that,” he says, “where people might not know what it’s about. For me, it’s completely personal – it acknowledges my friend’s passing and that my love for him is eternal, but also acts as a new chapter for me with the birth of my daughter.”

Tourist’s Inside Out will be released on 20 May 2022. Pre-save the album here and grab your vinyl copy here .

Tourist drops by to share his new album, Inside Out .

London-based songwriter and electronic musician William Phillips makes yearning, bittersweet dance tracks under the name Tourist. Having won a Grammy for writing Sam Smith's emotive hit, Stay With Me , Tourist has proven a master of emotive music across genres.

Yesterday, he released his third album, Inside Out , an impressive body of work packing inventive drum work, emotive melodic flourishes & incorporating the elements of dance music he loves: swinging garage grooves, chunky bass and the melodies of French filter house. Whilst much of the album was written as he grieved the sudden death of a close friend, Inside Out is contemplative, emotional, but also bright and filled with music to warm the dancefloor.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Dear Abby counsels a woman who's ex and his new girlfriend live rent free with her in her apartment.

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend is 18 years younger than I am. Our relationship hasn’t been perfect, but I love him to death. Unfortunately, I’m going through menopause and have all the side effects. Long story short, he found another girl. It was just supposed to be for sex, and he told me he wouldn’t get into another relationship or marry anyone but me. Well, he fell for her, which I warned him he was going to do.

They are both at my apartment. I’m trying to make him happy by allowing this, but he can be so mean to me, and he’s so nice to her. He tells me how nice she is, etc. I told him it’s because he hasn’t hurt her yet. He won’t have sex with me now. He claims he isn’t favoring her, but he is.

I love him so much, and don’t want to lose him. I’m in so much pain because I can’t please him in every way. I don’t know what to do. Should I allow this and try to make it work, or should I give up since it seems like he has given up on me? — CAN’T STOP CRYING

DEAR CAN’T STOP: Let me get this straight. Your much younger boyfriend and his new girlfriend live in your apartment (rent-free), and he no longer makes love with you. What are you getting out of this charade besides pain?

If I thought it would help, I’d advise you to stick it out and hope his romance will blow over. But I can’t — because whatever respect and gratitude he felt for you is gone. The pain you are experiencing will end only when you find your self-respect and usher the two lovebirds out the door. For your own sake, please do it soon.

DEAR ABBY: I am SUPER outgoing! Always have been. I can walk up to anyone and start a conversation. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed that many people have no personality. During the pandemic it became exponentially worse. Neighbors don’t speak. People look at their phones every waking minute and have lost their conversational skills. It is pathetic.

I don’t know people’s backgrounds or interests just by looking at them. I’m smart, but I’m not telepathic. If people don’t know how to simply say “hi” or “good morning,” something is wrong! COVID shut things down. But if you weren’t friendly before the pandemic, how are you going to be five years from now? Humanity is doomed if we don’t interact. — FRIENDLY IN THE EAST

DEAR FRIENDLY: The COVID disruption may have contributed to what you are describing, but it had been building for at least the past 20 years. As people became more and more fixated on their electronic devices, the ability to look someone in the eye and converse withered.

If you don’t look someone in the eye and communicate in person, the ability to read social cues withers and is eventually lost. I believe this has caused much of the isolation and loneliness we are experiencing in our society. If we are going to fix this, people will have to teach themselves to unplug and reach out to the people around them. Making the time to exchange social amenities as simple as smiling and saying, “Good morning,” is an easy place to start.

DJ Porter Robinson coming to Nashville as Music City sees EDM uptick

tourist dj live

DJ, record producer and singer-songwriter Porter Robinson will be bringing a night of EDM to Nashville on his upcoming tour. He will be performing at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium on Sept. 10.

Robinson's "SMILE! World Tour" brings him to Music City in support of his upcoming album "SMILE! :D," which will release on July 26.

The DJ is known for songs "Everything Goes On," "Shelter" and "Goodbye To A World." On April 23, he dropped a new single from the album "Knock Yourself Out XD."

Robinson's tour will see him make his way through North America, Australia, Asia, Europe and South America.

Robinson comes as Nashville sees EDM uptick

Robinson's Nashville performance comes as EDM is shining bright in Music City.

At the end of March, athlete Shaquille O'Neal, also known as DJ Diesel , took the stage at the Skydeck on Broadway.

O'Neal's EDM alter ego brought a night of thumping EDM music to Broadway with a packed crowd and a set that featured pulsating trap music, modern electric dance music favorites and dubstep.

Nashville also recently saw the opening of one of its first EDM dance clubs, the Night We Met .

The club, located in the Gulch, opened to the public on March 28 . Night We Met is looking to grow the EDM scene in Nashville—a city known for country and rock music, not its club scene, like New York or Los Angeles.

The new venue will host DJs from all over the world with global platforms.

EDM fans can check out upcoming events at nightwemetnashville.com .

How do I buy tickets to Porter Robinson's tour?

There will be a Live Nation presale starting on Wednesday, May 1 at 10 a.m. CST and going until May 2 at 10 p.m. CST at livenation.com .

Fans can use the code "SOUNDCHECK" to access the presale.

General onsale will begin on Friday, May 3 at 10 a.m. CST at porterrobinson.com .

About Tourist

Known for making atmospheric electronic music that often incorporates field recordings from everyday life, Grammy-winning English musician and producer Tourist creates “dance music for people who don’t like to dance.” • The artist born Will Phillips started playing piano when he was three. When he was 12, he discovered dance music via online pirate radio stations. • He first gained attention making remixes under the name Little Loud. He adopted the moniker Tourist—inspired by his feelings of outsiderness—once he began focusing on original music. • Tourist cowrote Sam Smith’s 2014 smash “Stay With Me,” which won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 2015. • His 2016 debut album, U, was inspired by a four-year relationship. The opening title track includes audio of Tourist walking from his flat to the studio after a fight with his girlfriend. • Prone to “telling stories with sounds,” Tourist generally makes instrumental music. A poignant exception is “Emily,” a song for his sister that’s included on his 2019 sophomore album, Everyday. • Later in 2019, Tourist dropped another full-length, Wild, which he called his “being in love dance album.”

This U.S. City Was Just Named the Best Place to Live for Low Cost of Living

Hint: it's in Indiana.

With inflation and mortgage rates straining Americans' finances and plans to buy a home, many are looking to relocate to communities with lower housing and living costs. States like New York, California, and Illinois are losing residents to South Carolina, Texas, and Idaho, where people can still get more bang for their buck without compromising their standard of life or job opportunities. But if affordability is truly a top priority for you, consider moving to South Bend, Indiana, which just topped Niche.com's list of cities with the lowest cost of living in America.

South Bend, which is located on St. Joseph River in Northern Indiana and is home to about 103,000 residents, received an overall grade of A- based on its performance in several categories, such as housing, jobs, diversity, and cost of living. According to Zillow, the median home value in South Bend is $169,000, or over $200,000 below the country's average, and the median rent is $935, which is also lower than the national average of $1,268. In addition, the overall cost of living, which takes into account expenses such as groceries, transportation, clothing, and utilities, is 18 percent lower than the national average.

South Bend is home to the University of Notre Dame, which has left its mark on the city's social life. It offers tons of recreational activities, restaurants, bars, sports, and arts events. Those seeking a more active lifestyle closer to nature will also thrive here, as there are dozens of parks and hiking trails. Howard Park, for example, along the St Joseph River, boasts 13 acres of facilities, including a playground and an ice trail.

South Bend's job market received a B from Niche.com, and its commute — an A. According to the Bureau of Labor, the unemployment rate in the city in February 2024 was 4.7 percent, with education, healthcare, and manufacturing among the top industries with the largest employment in the area.

However, the city's lowest scores were in the crime and safety (D+) and weather (C) categories, as South Bend records more violent and property crimes per capita than the nation's average

Another city in Indiana made it to the top three list of the most affordable places in the country, and that's Evansville, which ranked third. Second was Brownsville in southern Texas on the Gulf of Mexico.

Venice launches world first tourist entrance fee in bid to fight overcrowding

VENICE, Italy — Ancient and beautiful, this city is sometimes referred to as an open air museum — and now visitors to Venice will have to pay an entry fee after the tourist hub on Thursday became the first in the world to introduce a charging system for day-trippers.

In a bid to thin out the crowds that throng to see the canals, bridges and striking architecture during vacation season, day-trippers will have to pay 5 euros ($5.35) to enter the lagoon city on 29 peak days, mostly on weekends, as part of a trial phase until July 14.

Tourists who have booked at least one night at a hotel in the city will be exempt from the charge, as will residents, workers and students in the city. Visitors under age 14 will also be exempt. But like the day-trippers, they will also have to ensure they have registered online and received QR codes.

Those without smartphones will have to go to the city’s Santa Lucia train station to buy tickets.

UNESCO Recommends Venice For Endangered Heritage List

Among the thousands of people lining up at the station for a ticket Thursday was Donna Porter-Mutchler, a tourist from Tennessee, who told NBC News she thought the charge was “a wonderful idea.”

“Venice deserves to be taken care of,” she said. “I think it’s more than worth it. I come here often, and I’ll pay every time.”

While there will be no limits on the number of people who can register, officials hope the fee will put people off on days it applies.

“We are not looking to collect money, tax people or introduce a police state,” Simone Venturini, Venice’s tourism councilor, told NBC News. “We are being democratic about it, but the important message is: ‘Please, if you are a day-tripper, choose another day.’”

While there are no turnstiles at the city’s entrance points to make sure people have passes, inspectors will make random checks and issue fines of 50 to 300 euros to anyone who has failed to register.

Prominent signs across the city and a TV and newspaper advertising campaign have been launched in Italy and some other countries to let people know about it. And with the help of artificial intelligence , Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has also recorded a video message in several languages to inform tourists about the charge.

Officials in the city estimate an average of 50,000 people a day visit Venice, an influx that almost matches the resident population, some of whom are unhappy about the new charge.

“Venice has turned into Disneyland, where tourists are catered more than residents, and charging $5 is not going to stop anyone,” Federica Toninello of the Social Assembly for Housing and the Solidarity Network for Housing in Venice said Thursday. “It’s just propaganda.”

UNESCO Recommends Venice For Endangered Heritage List

Others, like tourist guide Luisella Romeo, said they were concerned about the use of personal data collected by the new system. “That’s an invasion of privacy. Those details will remain in the system for five years and could be given to third parties, public and private,” she said.

But officials in the city, which narrowly escaped being placed on UNESCO’s “World Heritage in Danger” list last year, in part because the United Nations body decided that it was not addressing concerns that its delicate ecosystem risked being overwhelmed by mass tourism, have insisted that something needed to be done.

Three years ago, large cruise ships were banned from sailing into the Venetian lagoon , and the city has also announced limits on the sizes of tourist groups.

While the charge in Venice is still in its experimental stage, other popular Italian tourism destinations, like Lake Como, which has struggled with overcrowding for years, are watching closely.

Only time will tell whether it ends up dead in the water.

Google maps testing live activities on iphone – here’s what it looks like [gallery].

Avatar for Ben Schoon

Live Activities are a super useful feature of Apple’s latest iPhones, but also one that goes underused. Google Maps has been overdue to support the feature for years now and while it’s still not live yet, Google is testing Live Activities with some iPhone users.

On iOS, a Live Activity can offer data from an app which can be shown with priority on the lock screen and always-on display, as well as in the iPhone’s Dynamic Island. Live Activities can serve a number of use cases, with one example being how Uber and Lyft use the feature to show pickup and dropoff status.

Google has been teasing support for Live Activities in Maps since early 2023 . It was last reported that Google was aiming to roll out the feature in time for iPhone 15 , but that never happened.

When it was first announced, Google touted that “glanceable directions” would include information that was “previously only visible by unlocking your phone, opening the app and using comprehensive navigation mode.” The feature has been opt-in, and is already active on Android via normal system notifications. It’s only on iOS that the feature has yet to fully roll out, despite a setting in the app referring to “Glanceable directions while navigating.”

Lately, though, Google has been testing support for Live Activities with these glanceable directions on and off for some users.

Over the past two or three months, some lucky users have noticed Live Activities from Google Maps appearing on their iPhones when getting directions. This appears to work whether using public transit or normal in-car navigation, with Maps showing the destination and time of arrival as pictured below.

The feature, as expected, works on both the lock screen and the Dynamic Island.

We’ve spotted multiple reports on Reddit of Google testing the functionality, as well as another report today from Max Jambor on Twitter/X . It seems to be an extremely limited test, and at least one user who saw the test said it stopped working a few hours later.

It’s still unclear when Google intends to roll out support for Live Activities on Maps for iPhone, but the feature is certainly eagerly awaited, and long overdue.

If you’d like to try your luck in getting this going, open the Settings menu in Google Maps and toggle on “Glanceable directions while navigating.” This likely won’t result in Live Activities suddenly appearing, but it gives you a better shot in trying it out.
