Folks traveling to New York often want to live like a local for a few days, visiting the restaurants and bars where they can just blend in and avoid anything too touristy. But plenty of places across the boroughs blur the line between tourist trap and local safe haven.

The places on this map fill up regularly during primetime with tourists, but locals in the know will sneak in, too. Here now, a list of some of the biggest tourist destinations in New York that are worth a visit. Consider them the next time family or friends come to visit.

Health experts consider dining out to be a high-risk activity for the unvaccinated; it may pose a risk for the vaccinated, especially in areas with substantial COVID transmission.

Arthur Avenue Retail Market

This food hall and retail market has been open in the Bronx’s Little Italy since 1940, focused on classic Italian-American goods. Food runs from fresh mozzarella to overstuffed heroes, but Eater critic Robert Sietsema most highly recommends eating at charming Sicilian counter Café al Mercato for some focaccia sandwiches, tripe soup, baked pastas, and other hot entrees. Beyond food, find freshly rolled cigars, tons of dried pasta, craft beer, and even gardening supplies. To make the stop a full tour of the neighborhood, follow Sietsema’s walking guide .

Open since 1962, Sylvia’s is a Harlem tradition — an essential restaurant, period, for classics like ribs, cornbread, fried chicken, and collards. What started as a luncheonette has expanded to over 200 seats with catering and remains a go-to for politicians and celebrities. Since founder Sylvia Woods died in 2012, the family has been running the business.

21 Great Restaurants to Try in Harlem

Gray's Papaya

The dogs at Gray’s , on the Upper West Side and open 24/7, have been widely loved for decades, particularly as a popular drunken stop for locals. With its Recession Special still going strong — two franks and a medium drink for $6.95 — it’s little wonder why.

Magnolia Bakery

Magnolia has a reputation for cupcakes after Sex and the City made it famous. But that’s the rookie move — instead, go for the decadent banana pudding or an airy icebox cake.

The Halal Guys

Lines snake down the block constantly at this chicken and rice phenom . Its flagship cart sits on West 53rd Street off Sixth Avenue, prime location for tourists going to the Museum of Modern Art and the Midtown lunch crowd. Get the combo platter, and get the sauces.

Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant

This oyster bar has reigned inside Grand Central’s subterranean space since 1913, and it welcomes commuters just as much as tourists daily. The smart move is to sit at the bar with a plate of raw oysters during the late lunch hour. Order the love-it-or-hate-it  oyster pan roast , and decide which side to choose.

Chelsea Market

An anchor of West Chelsea for more than 20 years, Chelsea Market is one of the city’s best food courts . It’s always a mob scene and it’s hard to find seating. But it’s a market that locals actually use, for both its stellar restaurant vendors — Ayada, Los Tacos No. 1, and Miznon rise above — and market stands.

John's of 12th Street

This red-sauce spot opened in 1908 and remains a restaurant from another era that we’re happy to revisit in real life and on TV (by way of “the Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire ” ). This onetime speakeasy made wine and booze in the basement and today pays homage to Italian American items like pasta fagioli, clams oreganata, chicken parm, or spaghetti and meatballs. It’s also a super vegan friendly menu.

Veniero's Pastry

This Italian pastry shop has been going strong since 1894, where cannoli, tiramisu, sfogliatelle, and gelato are all required orders. Devotees of the bakery know to grab a table under the stained glass ceiling just before Veniero’s closes (midnight during the week, and 1 a.m. on weekends).

Dominique Ansel Bakery

Ever heard of a little pastry called the Cronut? Suckers line up at 6 a.m. for the croissant-doughnut hybrid that took the world by storm — but locals know to go later in the day for pastry chef Dominique Ansel’s stellar kouign amann , frozen s’mores, or any of the other pastries in the case, really.

The Best Restaurants in Soho Right Now

This behemoth French brasserie from restaurateur Keith McNally has had a huge influence on the NYC dining scene. Its red leather banquettes, soft lighting, and bistro fare keep it serving one million meals every year . Rather than sit down for a full meal, head to the bar for some steak tartare and frites, wash it down with Champagne, and drink in the Balthazar experience.

The Best Burgers in New York City

Russ & Daughters

Four generations of family ownership and over one hundred years of business give this place a certain sense of gravitas, but it’s the quality that keeps people coming back. Consider the Classic, a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon (maybe with tomato, capers, and onion, too). Take a peek behind the long counter as staff assembles your order. And if you want to try and pass for a local, don’t order your bagel toasted.

22 Restaurants Still Offering NYC’s Most Iconic Dishes

Katz's Delicatessen

Few sandwiches are as famous as a pastrami from Katz’s, and perhaps none have had quite the Hollywood treatment. Sure, it fills up to the brim in here daily, but New Yorkers know to file in near closing time, 11 p.m. most weekdays, midnight on Friday, or any time of night on Saturday (the only night it’s open 24 hours). Katz’s also serves one of the city’s best hot dogs, properly topped with sauerkraut and mustard.

Nathan's Famous

It’s a fact that the dogs served at the original Nathan’s are superior to any from its many franchise locations. They are also better than many of the other hot dogs found in New York. Go on any day that isn’t the Fourth of July.

Customers wait in a line that wraps around the corner of the colorful Nathan’s Famous restaurant in Coney Island.

37 Tourist Trap Restaurants That Are Actually Really Good

Pike Place

When you're a tourist in a new city, it can be hard to know where to eat. You know the locals have their favorite spots, but even with the help of the Internet , finding those holes in the wall, specialty restaurants, and hidden gems can be impossible. So, of course, you default to the most famous restaurants, the spots in bustling, busy neighborhoods, and standbys.

And, yes, some of those places are overpriced, overly busy eateries with bland food and crappy service. But for every spot like that, you're going to find iconic restaurants with charming atmospheres, great views, a friendly waitstaff, and incredible food. These places may be touristy, but make no mistake: Locals eat here too.

From a small chili joint in Washington, D.C., to one of the most famous doughnut shops in the United States, these 37 "tourist trap" restaurants earn their bustling crowds and destination restaurant status. What place is worth visiting in your next vacation spot? Keep reading to find out.

Ben’s Chili Bowl (Washington, D.C.)

The line can get ridiculously long at Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C. , and that may seem ridiculous for this no-frills, cash-only establishment, but the wait is worth it. If some of the best hot dogs and chili in America don't prove that, take the word of celebrity frequenters like Barack Obama, Denzel Washington and Hillary Clinton.

Boudin Bakery (San Francisco, California)

The sourdough bread at San Francisco's Boudin Bakery is a thing of legend. Sure, you're going to have to elbow tourists and deal with overworked employees to get it, but once you have a bite of the soup du jour in a sourdough bowl, all the stress will drift away.

Cafe du Monde (New Orleans, Louisiana)

There are a lot of things to eat and drink down in New Orleans, but the finest food and beverage pairing is a piping hot bag of fresh beignets and a cup of coffee at the Café du Monde in the French Quarter. The line is long and the restaurant is packed to the brim, but one bite of that pillowy, powdered sugar-covered beignet will make it all worth it.

California Grill (Orlando, Florida)

One could argue that all of Walt Disney World in Orlando is a tourist trap, and that wouldn't be wrong. But it's worth it to brave the screaming toddlers, stressed out parents and oblivious tourists to nab a reservation at the California Grill in the Contemporary Resort. The sushi, specialty flatbreads and ravioli are to die for, and the service is world-class. Not only is the food phenomenal, but if you book a reservation for dinner, you have the absolute best views of Magic Kingdom's fireworks on property.

Canter’s Deli (Los Angeles, California)

The Los Angeles-based Jewish deli Canter's Deli is one of America's finest casual dining establishment s, so when we say that it's worth braving the crowds for, you have to believe us. The breads here — rye, pumpernickel, bagels and challah — are the true stars. But the pastrami, chopped liver, and oven-roasted turkey are nothing to bat an eye at either.

Corky’s BBQ (Memphis, Tennessee)

Corky's BBQ is a one of the best barbecue chains in America , so if you find yourself in Memphis, this place is a must-do. Their hickory-smoked ribs are far and away the thing to order there. They're rubbed, basted, and smoked for 18 hours and are so tender they simply fall off the bone. Want to get served right away? Pro tip: Eat at the bar.

(Franklin BBQ Austin, Texas)

The lines at Franklin BBQ are legendary. You'll be standing and waiting for hours and hours and hours. But at the end of that ridiculously long queue are the finest ribs in Austin, and that's saying something. This place is beyond hyped, but the hype is worth it. The peppery ribs are so tender and flavorful, you don't even need one of the joint's three sauces. But you should probably try them anyway.

Galatoire's (New Orleans Louisana)

OK, yes. You do still need to wear a jacket at Galatoire's in New Orleans, but it's worth suiting up for. Since 1895, this Creole restaurant has been serving regional classics like oysters en brochette, seafood okra gumbo and black bottom pecan pie. The décor and the food is a bit of a time warp, but it's a trip down memory lane worth taking.

Geno's Steaks (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

You can't miss Geno's Steaks in Philadelphia; the bright neon signs guarantee that. But fight the lines and all of the tourists, and you'll find one of the most iconic restaurant dishes in America , the cheesesteak. The meat is in slices, giving a decadent, juicy feel to this classic sandwich. Order it with onions and Cheez Whiz to eat like a true Philadelphian.

Pat’s King of Steaks (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

If Geno's Steaks isn't your flavor, go around the corner to visit their arch nemesis: Pat's King of Steaks . They claim to have invented the cheesesteak , and their chopped-up rib-eye steak tastes truly iconic. To find out which Philly spot is your favorite, you'll just have to try them both (which isn't a bad way to spend an afternoon).

Golden Steer (Las Vegas, Nevada)

If you're looking for an old-school Las Vegas steakhouse, look no further than Golden Steer . Restaurants turn over frequently in Sin City, so the fact that this restaurant has been cooking steaks to perfection since 1958 is a testament to its excellence. It's the oldest steakhouse in Vegas, so it really appeals to tourists, but one taste of their signature prime rib and it will all be worth it.

Grand Central Oyster Bar (New York, New York)

No city is home to more tourist trap restaurants than New York City , and no area of NYC is more tourist trap-filled than Midtown Manhattan. But fight through the slow-walking visitors and rushed locals at Grand Central Station to check out the iconic Grand Central Oyster Bar . The landmark restaurant is so gorgeous it recently won a James Beard Design Icon Award , their oyster list spans over five pages, and they serve up some of the finest oysters Rockefeller in the city.

Grimaldi's Pizza (Brooklyn, New York)

New York City is known for its pizza, of course, and you're bound to find a phenomenal slice no matter where you land. But there's something special about the coal-fired pies at Grimaldi's Pizza located in the Brooklyn neighborhood of DUMBO (an acronym for "down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass," in case you didn't know where it was). Don't overthink it. Be ready to wait in line, bring cash, and order a Margherita pie. That long line is worth it; this is one of the best pizzas in America .

House of Prime Rib (San Francisco, California)

Want to know where to find some of America's best prime rib ? Well, look no further than San Francisco's House of Prime Rib . This legendary steakhouse is always packed to the brim, but book a reservation when you're in town to enjoy one of the coziest atmospheres around and a prime rib that has been dry-aged to perfection over 21 days and slowly roasted in a blanket of rock salt.

Hudson's Seafood House On The Docks (Hilton Head, South Carolina)

Hilton Head, South Carolina , is a classic East Coast vacation destination, and Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks is its most popular seafood shack . The crowds start coming early, so if you arrive any time after 5 p.m., be prepared to wait. But your patience will be rewarded with freshly steamed fish, perfectly fried hush puppies, and a stunning waterside view. The sunset in Hilton Head never looked so good.

Joe’s Stone Crab (Miami, Florida)

You can wait over two hours to get a table at Joe's Stone Crab in Miami, but locals and tourists alike are willing to brave the crowds for the massive seafood menu at this South Beach hotspot. As the name implies, you don't want to miss the stone crab. Go ahead and order a jumbo. And in a state that has no shortage of amazing Key lime pie , Joe's takes the prize.

Katz’s Delicatessen (New York, New York)

A pastrami sandwich that costs over $20? Yep, that's what you'll find at Katz's Delicatessen , which is a bona fide New York City institution. The sandwiches are as sky-high as the prices, so you won't feel bad about dropping all your cash at this iconic Jewish deli . Katz's leans into its tourist trap designation. Its walls are lined with celebrity photos and there's a sign designating where the infamous "I'll have what she's having" line from "When Harry Met Sally" was spoken. You won't just find tourists here; locals are known to stumble in after a few adult beverages and enjoy one of the best sandwiches in America .

Lambert's Cafe (Sikeston, Missouri)

You better pay attention at Lambert's Café , because otherwise you might get pelted in the face with a roll . Perhaps the most famous roadside restaurant in the U.S., this Southern joint is best known for throwing its rolls across the restaurant, but that's not the only reason to stop by Sikeston, Missouri . The Southern comfort food here is top notch, from the country fried steak to the fried okra to the meatloaf. Just, seriously, watch out for the hot rolls.

Lou Malnati's (Chicago, Illinois)

There are many, many amazing deep-dish pizza places in Chicago, but the best one is also the most famous: Lou Malnati's . Hang out and wait for your table. You'll need an empty stomach to polish off a Malnati Chicago Classic, which contains lean sausage, some extra mozzarella, and vine-ripened tomato sauce. This pie is practically a Chicago icon at this point.

Louis' Lunch (New Haven, Connecticut)

Not too far from Yale University, there is Louis' Lunch , where Louis Lassen is believed to have invented the hamburger back in 1895. Is this story true? We're not sure, but this burger joint is one of America's oldest restaurants . Whether or not it's the first, the "hamburger sandwich" here is phenomenal; it features a hand-shaped patty served between toast with cheese. Just be prepared to wait in line and leave shortly after you finish your meal; this place gets slammed with hungry customers and students.

Loveless Cafe (Nashville, Tennessee)

There's a lot of good Southern cooking in Nashville, but drive a little ways away from downtown and head to the Loveless Café . Their biscuits are legendary, and though their jams are spectacular, these little dough disks of delight barely need any jazzing up. The wait is long, but it's worth it for just one bite of those biscuits and a little (OK, a lot) some of America's best fried chicken .

Mi Tierra (San Antonio, Texas)

There's no shortage of amazing Mexican food in Texas , but even locals will brave the crowds to get the tacos at Mi Tierra in San Antonio. Since 1941, this festively decorated restaurant has been serving some of the best tacos in the country . Our recommendation: The Carnitas Michoacán. Fried pork served with freshly made guacamole? Say no more.

Nathan’s Famous (Brooklyn, New York)

Any place that has a nationally-televised eating contest is going to be swarming with tourists, but the original Nathan's Famous in Coney Island, New York, is not overrated. The hot dogs snap when you bite into them; they're some of the best hot dogs in America . They also just happen to pair perfectly with the crinkle-cut French fries and an ice-cold Coney Island lager. Take a ride on the Cyclone, eat here and then head to the beach for the perfect summer day.

The Peppermill Restaurant (Las Vegas, Nevada)

No trip to Las Vegas is complete without neon lights, and you'll find plenty of those at The Peppermill Restaurant . The line goes out the door for this lounge space, but if you're willing to wait, you'll find one of the city's finest brunches, specialty frozen cocktails and portions that are as big as your head for price that will leave you with plenty of money left for gambling.

Peter Luger (Brooklyn, New York)

Peter Luger is in an odd part of Williamsburg, but tourists brave a trip on the J train for this truly iconic, old-school steakhouse . It's a meat lover's dream, with thick-cut bacon , perfectly cooked steaks and beautifully cooked lamb chops. The atmosphere is classic New York (as are the grumpy waiters), making this a true time warp.

Philippe The Original (Los Angeles, California)

Tourists and locals alike love an old-fashioned deli, and in LA, it doesn't get older or more iconic than Philippe the Original . Established in 1908, this iconic restaurant serves up the finest French dip sandwich on the West Coast. Unlike many touristy spots, the prices here are reasonable. You can get a sandwich, drink and dessert for cheap.

Pike Place Market (Seattle, Washington)

Pike Place Market is one of the best markets in America, period. You'll be hard pressed to find fresher seafood or produce in the country than you will here. But if you want to be your food already cooked (and cooked flawlessly), this Seattle spot is great for that, too. Piroshky Piroshky has some of the best Russian pastries for every palate; Matt's in the Market has a stunning view of the city and fantastic sandwiches; finally, you can't leave a fish market without a bowl of chowder from Pike Place Chowder .

Pink’s Hot Dogs (Los Angeles, California)

There are a lot of landmark hot dog stands in America, but Pink's in Los Angeles is in a league of its own. The original location on the corner of La Brea and Melrose will have lengthy lines, but to say you've dined at this famous LA restaurant is worth any sort of time in a queue. The bacon chili cheese dog is a classic, even if the calorie count isn't Hollywood-approved. If you want ultimate kitsch, get a dog named after a celebrity, like the Martha Stewart (mustard, relish, onions, chopped tomatoes, sauerkraut, bacon, and sour cream).

Portillo's (Chicago, Illinois)

There are plenty of places to get a great Chicago-style hot dog in the Windy City, but locals will all tell you one thing: Forget the rest and just go to Portillo's . This chain has over 40 locations across Illinois and the rest of the United States, but the flagship location on West Ontario Street is a fun spot to visit thanks to its many funky signs and goblets of Daisy Cutter pale ale. Get a Chicago-style hot dog with all the fixings (duh) or an Italian beef sandwich.

Primanti Brothers, Pittsburgh

Primanti Brothers has opened new restaurants across the region since it first opened its doors in 1933, but the original location in Pittsburgh's Strip District is a must-visit. Not only was it deemed a classic American restaurant by the James Beard Foundation, but it has some of the best sandwiches you can find . The Primanti sandwich is their namesake and their most iconic dish . It contains french fries, the meat of your choice, coleslaw, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese between two soft slices of Italian bread. Bring your appetite.

Reading Terminal Market (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

The Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia can get packed , but if you're able to maneuver through the crowds, you'll find some of the absolute best food and drinks in Pennsylvania . This historic market has over 100 merchants to choose from, but going here without a visit to Miller's Twist for America's very best soft pretzel , a roast pork sandwich from DiNic's , or a coffee from Termini Bros. is a crime. You may need to make multiple trips to get everything you want (and need) to try.

Tao (Las Vegas, Nevada)

When you go to Las Vegas, you need to hit up a big-dollar restaurant, a nightclub and a classy lounge. Well, look no further than Tao , which is all three things under one (gigantic) roof. The atmosphere here will simply blow your mind, with a giant Buddha in the center of the restaurant and Asian-inspired lanterns, photos, statues and flowers everywhere. As you sit in your circular red booth, you will have some seriously solid sushi, scrumptious pork fried rice and a Chilean sea bass with a miso glaze that is so perfect, you'll think you've died and ended up in Nirvana.

Top of the Falls Restaurant (Niagara Falls, New York)

If you want the perfect view of both the American and Canadian sides of Niagara Falls, you cannot beat Top of the Falls in New York. Unlike many top of the world restaurants, the dishes here aren't fancy. But the beef on weck , Buffalo macaroni and cheese and fish and chips are all solid dining options.

Top of the Hub (Boston, Massachusetts)

If you want to see Boston, and we mean really see all of Boston, you can't beat the view at Top of the Hub . It's one of the toughest tables to get in the city, but if you manage to nab a reservation at the very top of the Prudential Building, you'll have one of the most amazing rooftop views in the world . Fittingly, the food is expensive and the experience is varied, but the Boston skyline looks simply spectacular.

Union Oyster House (Boston, Massachusetts)

Union Oyster House is one of America's oldest restaurants , which makes sense due to its historic Boston location. So, yes, it is a tourist trap, but here you'll find some of the coldest, freshest, and tastiest raw oysters in New England. You'll also find some wonderfully executed Boston classics, such as New England clam chowder and broiled seafood platters.

VooDoo Doughnut (Portland, Oregon)

VooDoo Doughnut is very famous, and the shop is very tiny. So it logically follows that there's always a sizable line to get some. But, that line is beyond worth it. Here you'll find the best doughnuts in Oregon , from the simple yet perfect Portland Cream to the outrageous Memphis Mafia , a banana fritter topped with a drizzle of chocolate and peanut butter, chocolate chips, and peanuts.

White House Sub Shop (Atlantic City, New Jersey)

Like its West Coast counterpart Las Vegas, Atlantic City in New Jersey has a lot of tourist traps, from its casinos to its pier to its restaurants. Among celebrity chef-owned steakhouses and ice cream shops, you'll find the White House Sub Shop , an old-fashioned sandwich place that serves one of the best dang Italian subs you'll find in the entire world. The combination of provolone cheese, coteghino, capicola and salami paired with oil, spices, tomato, lettuce and onion is so simple and yet so delectably salty. After you've had this sub, you'll never look at a sandwich the same way again. This is certainly a restaurant worth waiting in a long line for .

Some of these are classic , some are cheap , some Michelin-starred , and some are late-night . One of them is essential . All of them are almost certainly on a tourist’s radar. This selection of 16, unlike so many unmerited establishments that find their way into guidebooks, or just simply get in the way of a tourist’s route through town, are actually good, dependable — in some cases — outstanding, places to eat. Happy holidays.

St John Restaurant

Much has been written about how chef Fergus Henderson and his protégés have transformed British food, with a sphere of influence that extends around the globe. It is this that generates such interest in what is perhaps London’s most famous (for the right reasons) restaurant: Once-innovative, now textbook, British (and French) cooking that looks to the past like nowhere else in London, if not the world. Must try dishes include: Roasted bone marrow with parsley salad, Welsh rarebit, and a half dozen freshly baked madeleines.

Chiltern Firehouse

Consultant chef Nuno Mendes’ Chiltern Firehouse is a totally extravagant celeb-magnet of a restaurant. It sits inside one of London’s most prestigious hotels, and is the kind of special occasion place that delivers on a the promise of feeling special, even when the food is often merely meh. Brunch is a good time to visit — where fruits de mer, XO lobster fried rice, or Philly cheesesteak sandwich — adequately and decadently service a hangover. Or, dinner, when the lights dim, and the room comes into its own. But eye-wateringly expensive dishes like iberico pork, red pepper, barbecued peach, and fennel cream; or roasted turbot, baby artichokes, seaweed, and black truffle are pretty much just the side-show in a spectacular overall production.

London’s Best Late-Night Restaurants

One of London’s most recognisable chefs and a cook, author, and restaurateur who sits alongside Gordon Ramsay, Nigella Lawson, and Jamie Oliver as a food star with mass, international appeal. For that reason, the cafe-restaurant mini-chain that carries his name registers on the tourist’s radar. For good reason, as this is not just a branding ruse. Ottolenghi does not just display beautifully photogenic meringues, but offers some truly excellent lunch fare — like quiche, pie, cleverly seasoned, grilled root vegetable salads, and a range of high quality dessert pastry.

Yotam Ottolenghi has four cafes, which bear his name — in Notting Hill, Islington, Spitalfields, and Belgravia

Just as famous for its interiors, French chef Pierre Gaignaire’s Sketch flagship is one of a select number of London restaurants with two Michelin stars. So the cooking belongs to a certain tradition, offering the likes of whole pigeon, pigeon terrine, beetroot, buckwheat crepe, and cherry for £54. It recently celebrated its 15th anniversary, which means neither Sketch’s sort of finery nor the boldest of bold designs have yet to fall out of fashion.

Shake Shack Covent Garden

A  rapidly expanding  American mega chain somehow beats most homegrown burger restaurants in London. One just needs to know what to order, or rather,  how  to order the trademark Shack Burger. It’s pretty simple (if emulating classic fast food burgers is the goal.) To best complement the beautifully and aggressively griddled American cheese-covered patty, which is sandwiched between a sliced, squidgy Martin’s potato roll, order sliced raw onion and add pickles. (Tomato should be optional.) The original branch in Tourist Central, Covent Garden, is the pick of that area’s restaurants.

Shake Shack’s shakes, burgers, hot dogs, frozen custards, concretes, and shakes will soon be available in Essex

It’s a piece of prime gastronomic real estate, but M&Ms aside, there isn’t much to eat in Leicester Square itself. A claw-cracker’s throw from the neon, though, is some of London’s best seafood, courtesy of J. Sheekey. The fish pie and grilled Dover sole with bearnaise are still menu mainstays, while next door at the Atlantic Bar there’s sparklingly fresh shellfish platters, textbook lobster tempura and moreish smoked eel and bacon croquettes.

The Ritz London

Maybe London’s most exclusive publicly admissible restaurant. So ornate, it might be nauseating for some. But the Ritz represents the kind of faded opulence that fans of natural wine bars and exposed brick speciality coffee shops believe to have become extinct. The thing is, in Britain, this bizarre brand of nostalgia will never truly die. And what’s more, at least the Ritz has a chef — John Williams — who does not rest on his laurels, nor expect the chandeliers to distract from what’s on the plate. This one’s for the monied tourist, (who doesn’t mind a dress code), no doubt. But, like so much in Mayfair, and Piccadilly, The Ritz is not dross.

Borough Market

London’s oldest, busiest, buzziest food market is a food tourist’s dream, and recent restaurant openings have perked things up. Between Monmouth Coffee’s queue, Ginger Pig sausage rolls, Kappacasein toasties, and Brindisa chorizo sausage in a roll, Bao’s new restaurant, Flor, and mainstay Elliotts are all top shouts.

One of only three three-Michelin-starred restaurants in London. So it’s that sort of place. Old-school, owned by one of the oldest-school chefs left in the business. Following the departure of long-serving chef Clare Smyth, it is now the job of Matt Abe to roll-out fancy creations such as roasted sweetbread with artichoke and sunflower, pork chop with coco beans, hazelnut and mustard, and lemonade parfait with honey and bergamot. ( Many menus to choose from, and also a dress code to confront.)

It goes without saying that Los Angeles is a hot tourist destination, with its beaches, temperate weather, and robust restaurant scene. Even its tourist-friendly restaurants have something more to offer than the average chain, like a spot that offers freshly fried or grilled seafood with an ocean view, or an old-school Mexican restaurant that celebrities often frequent. Here are 20 restaurants that draw in travelers, but are actually good for locals too.

Malibu Seafood

Be patient when at Malibu Seafood, as the line is as legendary as the food. This small, but mighty shack on Pacific Coast Highway serves golden-fried fish and chips, creamy clam chowder, and other tantalizing seafood classics. It’s also a market, so consider buying fresh seafood to cook at home. Pick a table outdoors, or grab it to go and enjoy while at the beach.

Hot Dog on a Stick

The first Hot Dog on a Stick has been a mainstay along the boardwalk in Santa Monica for a good reason: The corn dogs are excellent. There are wiener options —  from turkey to vegetarian and beef — that have a little something for everyone and are battered and fried to order. Pair that with lemonade and some funnel fries for a whole experience. More reason to visit? The iconic food stand that has been around for 76 years unveiled a new building in 2022.

Great White

Venice’s sunny Great White sits just a few blocks from the iconic Boardwalk serving a breezy Australian-inspired daytime cafe menu that should please anyone. There are heaping crisp salads, comforting pastas, a mean burger, and wood-fired pizzas. The breakfast burrito is also considered one of LA’s top versions. The wide patio should be a nice place for tourists to really feel like an Angeleno, though the place has no problem filling up locals every day.

A popular fixture on reality TV shows and the jet set of Beverly Hills, Crustacean continues to deliver chef Helene An’s vision of upscale Vietnamese and Asian fusion cuisine with ritzy ambience to match. Service is stellar, always accommodating, and on-point from the start, which adds to the special feeling of dining here. And the food, prepared by veteran chef Tony Nguyen, who returned to the kitchen after a time away, reflects the balanced creativity of An’s dishes in things like smoky tuna caviar cigars and the restaurant’s famous garlic noodles with crab.

Seattle lucked out when they were handing out regional cuisines. Pacific Northwest seafood is hard to mess up, and it also helps that the city’s biggest tourist attraction happens to be a world-class fish market. For those visiting the city, the options may seem overwhelming across many of the neighborhoods, but even the most well known dining spots live up to the hype. Here’s a handful of favorites from Seattle’s biggest tourist zones.

Note: These places are ordered geographically from north to south, not ranked by preference. If you think we missed a spot or want us to consider adding something for a later update, send us a tip .

Named after the Norse goddess of love (who rides a chariot pulled by two cats!), this bistro inside Ballard’s National Nordic Museum is getting nationwide press for its modern take on Nordic cuisine. The streamlined, light-flooded dining room is veldig skandinavisk , and dishes like the juniper-smoked salmon smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich) and aquavit cocktails go the extra mile to drive the point home.

Seattle’s answer to NYC’s Peter Luger, El Gaucho and its mink-upholstered booths has a rep as a ritzy, unaffordable-to-the-common-man chophouse. Although the current Belltown location isn’t the original one from the ’50s, it’s tricked out with enough showstopping Rat Pack style to fool anyone who didn’t know that: a live pianist, a flaming bananas Foster cart, candles, martinis, and flamboyant, dazzling cuts of meat. Dahlia Lounge

This was the restaurant that skyrocketed Tom Douglas into becoming one of Seattle’s first celebrity chefs, and it’s honestly still worth the hype, almost 30 years later. Dahlia serves Pacific Northwestern cuisine at its most quintessential — dishes are based on local seafood, meat, and produce, often with an Asian influence. The dining room is usually packed at night, but the bar isn’t, and an early evening there with a plate of Puget Sound oysters is a serene pleasure.

Pike Place Chowder

Pike Place Chowder really does have the best chowder in town, and it comes in clam, salmon, scallop, and crab and oyster varieties, all served in the iconic sourdough bread bowl. The Athenian Inn

Yes, this 110-year-old place is in the absolute center of Seattle tourism, located not only in Pike Place Market but actually inside the main arcade, so one couldn’t be blamed for being skeptical about the food. But the Athenian’s oysters are as fresh as any you’ll find at Taylor Shellfish, and the fish and chips are a strong contender for best in the city. Plus, the draft beers are served in the frostiest mugs ever, and oh, that perfect, sweeping view.

In contrast to the gross old gum wall outside of the Alibi Room’s Post Alley location, this cozy upscale pizzeria/cocktail lounge is always clean and snazzy. Locals and tourists alike rave over the rustic brick-oven pies, which range from traditional styles like margherita or sausage and basil to fancy ones like Truffle Tre Funghi (three mushrooms with truffle oil drizzled on top) and grapes and bleu cheese (finished with arugula and a balsamic reduction).

Eating seafood on the waterfront always feels a little hokey, but for out-of-towners who want to do the thing in the place, this spot on Alaskan Way is the right kind of hokey. Fisherman’s is basically a fancier version of its cousin, the Crab Pot , down the street — they do a great touristy crab boil with prettier, higher-quality shellfish, and they don’t dump it all over the table. Which is fun too, don’t get us wrong.

Chicago’s reputation as a food mecca is deserved. Thanks to an impressive lineup of iconic dishes and numerous acclaimed restaurants , the Windy City draws in millions of visitors looking to eat at its most popular dining destinations. While many places are unabashed tourist traps, some actually manage to live up to the hype for both locals and out-of-towners alike. New additions to the list include Italian marketplace Eataly , Michigan Avenue gastropub the Gage , and venerable blues club Kingston Mines .

Kingston Mines

Chicago is synonymous with blues music and this Lincoln Park club is one of the oldest places to experience it. Established in 1968, Kingston Mines is home to two stages of live entertainment every night. Performers cover a range of different styles and play as late as 4 a.m. There’s a kitchen, too, that cranks out Southern specialties such as ribs, blackened catfish, and po’ boy sandwiches.

Lou Malnati's

Deep dish pizza is always among the first things to come to mind when tourists think about Chicago cuisine and very few have been doing it for as long as Lou Malnati’s . The Malnati family claim to be one of the inventors of the style and today their famed pizzeria has dozens of locations around the city and suburbs. Regardless of where folks stand on the pizza spectrum, the appeal of the ‘Malnati Chicago Classic’ is undeniable. Grab a knife and fork and dig into layers of mozzarella cheese, vine-ripened tomato sauce, and housemade sausage on flaky, buttery crust. It’s a pie that defines Chicago.

Garrett Popcorn Shops

Popcorn is the official state snack of Illinois so it’s no surprise that Chicagoans are in love with Garrett . The shop has been a city tradition since 1949 and its signature bags and tins can be spotted all over the downtown area and at the airport. The classic Garrett Mix is an addictive combination of CheeseCorn and buttery CaramelCrisp that compels folks to keep eating until it’s all gone.

Original Rainbow Cone

There really aren’t too many reasons to visit Navy Pier but for those who find themselves at Chicago’s ultimate tourist trap, it’s not without its perks. The Original Rainbow Cone has an outpost on site and its signature treat is more than just a pretty picture. Make the Navy Pier experience more tolerable with a kaleidoscope of colorful ice creams in a cone. The classic combination of chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with walnuts and cherries), pistachio, and orange sherbet puts a smile on anyone’s face, young or old.

The Purple Pig

The Mag Mile is full of chain restaurants and tourist traps so it’s easy to understand why the Purple Pig has been a favorite for a decade. James Beard Award winner Jimmy Bannos Jr.’s reimagining of Mediterranean fare has garnered numerous accolades and long lines out the door. Luckily, the restuarant moved into a bigger space this year and can now seat up to 120 guests. The new location boasts a revamped menu that’s heavy on wine and swine-y dishes — crispy pig’s ear, smoked pork tongue, milk-braised pork shoulder. Get there during off-peak hours or expect to wait; reservations are not accepted.

Frontera Grill

Mexican cooking in Chicago has never been more exciting than it is right now, with various eateries exploring new territories and techniques. Many chefs helped pave the way to this point but Rick Bayless has been arguably the most visible. His first restaurant, Frontera Grill , launched an empire and exposed diners to traditional Mexican dishes executed with refined touches. The dining room is always packed and for good reason. Even after three decades, the ceviches, guacs, and rich and complex moles are still some of the best around.

The wait is often several hours long but that doesn’t deter Chicagoans or out-of-towners from toughing it out for what some say is one of the best burgers in the country. Hogsalt Hospitality’s modern diner is renowned for its cheeseburger — an extraordinary specimen featuring griddled patties topped with American cheese, pickles, and Dijonnaise — as well as elevated takes on comfort foods, such as fried bologna sandwich and potato hash with duck heart gravy.

Girl & the Goat

Stephanie Izard rocketed to fame by winning Top Chef and became a household name with her first restaurant. Almost a decade after opening, Girl & the Goat is still one of the toughest reservations to snag. Don’t be deceived by the throng of out-of-towners, though, because it’s much more than just a tourist trap. Izard’s signature dishes — sautéed green beans, goat empanadas, oven-roasted pig face — pack bold flavors and are well worth planning in advance for.

Chicago’s Best Restaurants for Private Dining

The Chicago Athletic Association’s beautiful rooftop restaurant is the place to be. Sitting on the 13th floor of the Michigan Avenue hotel and offering unparalleled views of the skyline and Millennium Park, Cindy’s quickly became a must-visit destination upon its arrival in 2015. Battle the crowds for an opportunity to relax in an open-air beach house setting while enjoying dynamic cocktails and large-format seasonal plates. Yes, there will be lots of tourists but a glass of rosé or a boozy popsicle should help minimize the annoyance.

Thousands of visitors flock to Millennium Park each day but the nearby dining options leave a lot to be desired. This Michigan Avenue gastropub is an exception, catering to hungry executives and tourists who are in search of quality food and beverages. There’s an extensive selection of craft beers and whiskies to try and they’re accompanied by noteworthy renditions of pub fare, such as fish and chips, Scotch egg, and a venison burger. For entertainment, grab a seat on the patio and people-watch.

Where to Eat Fish and Chips in Chicago

While Chicago-style hot dogs and deep dish pizzas can be found all over the United States (to varying degrees of success), Italian beef is a specialty that doesn’t stray too far from home. That means tourists often go to birthplace of the sandwich: Al’s . Fortunately, the Taylor Street stand hasn’t lost a step. The beef is roasted in a secret blend of spices and at its best when “dipped” in jus. To avoid making a mess, it’s recommended that diners roll up their sleeves and assume the proper upright stance while eating.

Nashville restaurant Prince's Hot Chicken arrives at Nashville Airport

tourist restaurant

Greg Puzon was thrilled to get the chance to try Prince's Hot Chicken for the first time before his flight home.

Puzon happened to be flying back to California on the restaurant's opening day Tuesday at the Nashville International Airport.

"One of my cousins said Prince's is where it's at," Puzon said as he picked up his spicy sandwich. "I'm excited."

The storied restaurant — the originator of Nashville's famous hot chicken — is enjoying a renaissance following the 2019 closure of its original North Nashville location. In recent years, Prince's locations have opened on Nolensville Pike in Antioch; on Broadway at Assembly Food Hall; at Geodis Park; at Tanger Outlets in Century Farms Antioch; and, most recently, at the airport.

The new airport restaurant is located in the corridor between concourses C and D. It's one of several new restaurants at Nashville International Airport .

Founded in the 1930s, restaurant lore is that Prince's founder, Thornton Prince III, discovered how tasty "hot chicken" is when his jilted girlfriend tried to sabotage his recipe with chili pepper.

New eateries at Nashville Airport

New restaurants at Nashville International Airport include the recently opened Miami-based Half Moon Empanadas. The restaurant in Concourse B serves Argentinian pies made from scratch with high-quality ingredients.

Other new restaurants are inside BNA's satellite concourse , which operates eight gates, serving mostly serve low-cost fliers such as Spirit and Allegiant airlines.

New restaurants in the satellite concourse include Jimmy John's sandwiches, TexMex eatery TX/MX and Bongo Java coffee shop.

Nashville Airport expanded its concessions extensively following the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused nearly all of its businesses to close due to a lack of customers.

Several years later, there are now about 50 restaurants, bars and coffee shops, as well as retail shops.

Holmes Chapel, English village of Harry Styles' youth, needs fans to be tour guides

Many tourists visit sites such as a bakery where Styles once worked and a Chinese restaurant where he once dined with Taylor Swift. Tourism has been great for local businesses.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep.

Holmes Chapel, the English village of Harry Styles' youth, is looking for superfans to work as tour guides. The village gets a lot of tourists, Harries visiting sites like a bakery where Styles once worked and a Chinese restaurant where he once dined with Taylor Swift. The not-for-profit calling for tour guides says tourism has been great for local business, and now it wants to elevate its offerings.

(Singing) Why don't we leave it at that?

It's MORNING EDITION.
