WHAT IS AN AUSTRALIAN TOURIST VISA?

If you wish to come to Melbourne for a holiday, our experienced tourist visa agents may advise you to apply for a visitor visa (subclass 600) tourist stream, also known as a tourist visa.

An Australian tourist visa is a subclass of the visitor visa which applies to a broad range of temporary visas which allow you to stay in Australia for a limited time.

The tourist stream visa only allows you to:

  • Stay in Australia for up to 12 months
  • Visit friends and family, cruise or have a holiday
  • study or train for up to 3 months.

You cannot work on this visa.

If you intend to come to Melbourne or Australia for a purpose other than a holiday, such as work or long term study, a tourist visa may not be your best option. One of our visa agents will be able to provide you with the best options available.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A TOURIST VISA?

If you wish to visit Melbourne on a tourist visa, you can either apply for one while you are in Australia, or you can apply for one when you are outside of Australia. Applying for a tourist visa can be a complex process as it requires various forms of documentation. This is why a lot of people use a tourist visa agent. Your tourist visa agent will help you figure out which tourist visa is right for you and guide you through the application process.

Using a Nexor tourist visa agent means that you stress less and enjoy your holiday.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS for A TOURIST VISA

Though everyone’s needs are different, the basic requirements our tourist visa agents will list are:

Meet health requirements:

  • In order to be eligible for a tourist visa you will have to undergo a health examination.

Meet character requirements:

  • To prove you are of good character, you may need to provide military service or police records.

Have enough money:

  • To prove this you may have to provide personal bank statements, taxation records and other financial documents such as payslips. In certain cases, credit card limits may be accepted as proof that you have sufficient funds.

To be considered a genuine visitor, you must fit into one of these classifications:

  • In order to prove that you are a genuine visitor, you will need to provide documentation that shows your Australian travel plans or itinerary.
  • If you are staying with friends or family you will also have to provide a letter from them inviting you to visit . The letter should state their relationship to you, the purpose and length of your stay and whether you will be staying with them. If this person is paying for your stay, they will need proof of their funds.
  • You will also have to provide a reason to return to your country of origin such as a letter from your employer, school or educational institution. Documentation to prove that you have significant assets or property in your home country can also be used, as can a letter by an immediate family residing in your country of origin.

Other criteria:

  • Other criteria may be applied if the tourist visa applicant is under the age of 18. If so, they must have written parental permission to travel, as well as supporting documentation to show that appropriate arrangements have been made for their general wellbeing, including accommodation and financial support.

If you are interested in coming to Melbourne on a tourist visa, one of our tourist visa agents will be able to guide you through the various eligibility requirements.

If you have more complex needs, our tourist visa agents to discuss how they can help.

Visitor visas

Find the best way to get a visitor visa for your next holiday or business trip to australia..

Electronic Travel Authority visa (ETA)

Visitor visa (subclass 600), evisitor visa (subclass 651), what other visitor visas are available, what are the requirements for an australian visitor visa, how long do visas take to process, do i need a migration agent.

Unless you are an Australian citizen or a New Zealand passport holder, you will need to apply for a visa before visiting Australia for a holiday, business or short-term trip. Most visitors enter Australia on one of three visitor visas:

  • Electronic Travel Authority

This page will explain the various visa types for visitors and tell you how to apply for them.

An Electronic Travel Authority allows applicants living outside Australia to visit the country for tourism or business. Travellers on an ETA visa are permitted to stay in Australia for a maximum of three months. The following conditions apply:

  • Applicants must apply for the ETA online through the Australian government’s website .
  • ETA visas cost $20. Applicants must pay by credit card.
  • Yes. Every traveller must apply for their own ETA, including young children.

The visitor visa is a more flexible visa for visitors on short-term tourist and business trips. Eligible visitors can apply from inside and outside Australia, depending on the passport they hold. This visa:

  • Applicant must apply for the visitor visa online through the Australian government's website .
  • Costs between $145 and $1,065 depending on the trip length.
  • Allows visitors to stay for between 3 and 12 months.

How is a visitor visa different from an ETA?

  • The visitor visa has more flexible conditions for visitors, including length of trip and visa costs.
  • Passport holders of some countries may be eligible for an ETA but not for a visitor visa, or vice versa.
  • The visitor visa is also used by travellers from the People’s Republic of China on registered group tours.

The eVisitor visa is similar to the ETA. Applicants must be outside Australia when they apply online. Like the ETA, the eVisitor visa allows for visits of up to three months. This visa, unlike the ETA, is free.

Who can apply for an eVisitor visa?

  • Visitors from 36 European countries, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, can apply for eVisitor visas.
  • You must apply for this visa from outside Australia.
  • Applicants must apply for the ETA online through the Australian government's website .

Visitor visas summary

If you are unsure of what type of visitor visa you will require, you can visit the Australian immigration website for more details. Alternatively you can seek the advice of an authorised migration agent who will be able to advise you on the best visa for your situation.

There are a few other visitor visa options available. Most of the options will depend on which passport you hold as well as the purpose of your visit.

You can read more about working holiday visas in our work visa guide .

The requirements for an Australian visitor visa will depend on why you are planning to visit and how long you wish to stay. In all cases you must have a valid passport or travel document from an eligible country.

You should also consider the following:

  • If you are visiting for medical reasons, you will need documents from medical professionals regarding the reasons for your treatments.
  • Any visitor to Australia must be able to prove they are of good character to enter the country.
  • For all visa applications, any official documents you are required to provide (such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, proof of identity, etc.) will need to be certified by legal agencies of the country you live in and translated into English.
  • In some cases you may need to prove your good character by providing a police clearance certificate or other evidence.

Visa processing times are dependent on the type of visitor visa you are applying for and your personal circumstances, such as your citizenship. Some visas may be processed on the same day; other visas will take up to two months. It is very important that you always ensure that you allow plenty of time for your visa to be processed before travelling.

You don’t need a migration agent to make a visitor visa application but an agent may be helpful in navigating the application process. A migration agent can advise on the right type of visa for you as well as ensuring you provide the correct documentation, which allows for a much smoother application.

You can get more information and apply here: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/visitor-600/tourist-stream-onshore

Hope this helps!

Hello. I want to visitor visa for my family. only 15 days. My real younger brother family is a citizenship holder I am 41 years old. Which documents are needed from my family to apply for Visitor Visa and fees?

Thanks for your comment and I hope you are well.

As your family will only visit for 15 days, your family can get a Visitor visa (subclass 600). As it says above, this visa is good for short term trips. Their eligibility will depend on the passport they hold. The costs is between $135 and $1,000 depending on the trip length and will be determined upon the actual visa application.

I hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.

Best, Nikki

My father-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law wish to visit us in Australia under family sponsored short term (3 months) visiting visa in January 2020. Do they need to lodge 3 separate 1418 forms? Will the visa fee be 3*$135?

Hi Gitanjali,

Thanks for your comment and I hope you are doing well. It’s great to know that you’re family is visiting!

They would need to lodge separate 1418 forms which means they would pay $135 each. Hope this helps and feel free to reach out to us again for further assistance.

My second cousin has recently been granted tourist visa 600 from October 2019 for 3 moths stay with multiple entries. She financially supports herself but staying at my place in Oz. Can my mum still apply for a visitor visa to visit me as well?

Thank you for getting in touch with Finder.

Yes, your mum can still apply for the visitor visa to visit you in Australia.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Cheers, Jeni

I’m a guarantor for a visitors visa Can I cancel guarantee if I want too

Thanks for your message. I wish I could help you further however, the information on our page is limited regarding guarantor for a visitor visa. While we review visitor visas in our pages, it’s helpful to know that we don’t work with the Australian Embassy. It would be best to contact them directly for further assistance. You can find their contact details when you visit their website.

Hope this clarifies and we hope they find a quick resolution for you!

With care, Nikki

Important information about this website

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.

Visas to visit Australia

Whether you are visiting Australia for less than 72 hours or planning on a stay of several years you must have a valid Australian visa.

A visa is a form of permission for a non-citizen to enter, transit or remain in a particular country.

Tourist Visa Consultants for Australia

Best tourist visa agent for australia.

A tourist visa for Australia may be given to a foreigner who does not have a permanent abode or employment in India and is visiting India only for leisure, sightseeing, casual meetings with friends and family, or to attend a short-term yoga programme.

>> On a tourist visa, no additional activity is permitted.

>> The visas are not granted from a future date to coincide with the applicant's schedule for inbound and outbound travel to/from India but are valid immediately upon issuance.

>> A tourist visa is valid for one year and allows for multiple entries by default. It is neither extended nor converted.

>> As a result, a decrease in the validity term of a visa requested by an application has no effect on the visa costs.

We at VISA FIRMS know you're ecstatic to witness Australia's marvels. Its beaches, deserts, and blush, among other things. It's a lovely location to visit, but before you start fantasizing about lofting over those stunning beaches and deserts, double-check that your visa procedures are completed and you're set to fly. That is why VISA FIRMS has compiled a list of top Australia immigration consultants, who will help you fulfill all the tourist visa requirements for Australia and make your Visa process easier.

I’m looking for reputable tourist visa agent here in Australia. I’m thinning of using iVacs. Anyone had any experience? I do not want to use online evisa - I’m lazy. Please no agents reply. Only interested in thoughts from legitimate travellers…cheers

' class=

Lazy or not, you’d still need to provide an agent with all of the information required for the e-Visa.

The application is very straightforward.

There is a useful instructional guide at this link. Give it a read through. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cYa3zqEjsWHzL-MRPnDRPZPZiaHusG6Sk7eUrQScccc/edit

//I’m thinning of using iVacs//

And will you be getting an E-visa or a regular visa which will be a “sticker” placed in your passport?

Either way, you’ll be paying for the service.
