IRC TR011 TOURIST (DOT Legal) - Anyone run these?
By ram , March 22, 2016 in CRF150F/L, CRF230F/L & CRF250F
Recommended Posts
I'm looking for street legal trials tires for my 2005 CRF.
Since the Pirelli MT43 is apparently to wide for the CRF's rear rim, I wanted to ask about the DOT approved TR-011. I had not seen them before today. Until now, I thought the TR-1 was the DOT approved version of the TR-11.
I guess the TR-011 Tourist is also DOT. Anyone run the TR-011 Tourist? I can't find reviews of them on the CRF.

Also, I saw Ricks recommendation for 3.00-21 front. Anyone run this size for a front trials tire? Any pictures for the larger tire?
Thanks guys.

Why would a 400X18 MT-43 not fit on the rear of 2005 CRF230f? (Or any year model 230f)
- My Rides (3)
I have used 2.75x21 Comp Trials tires on the front and like them.
3.00x21 is an old front tire size for knobbies and its full cross section provides better bump absorption than the newer low profile metric sized front tires. The 3.00x21 Metzler 2E knobby had been my tire of choice for Enduro competition because of its bump absorbtion, I had a new leftover in storage so I tried it on my XR and while it softened the ride it also didn't steer as well as the metric sized tire, only used it one ride. YMMV
I have run 4.00R18 Competition Trials tires on the rear of several bikes and while larger in diameter than metric knobbies they fit XR200/250, RM, and CRF250 swing arms. They provide great bump absorption and more traction. The larger size gears the bike up the equivalent of about 1/2 tooth on the counter shift sprocket.
Here's the great debate I read. https://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/723320-will-the-mt-43-trials-tire-fit-my-2003-crf230f/ Seems the MT43 is a large tire for that size, and I've read comments like "its tall" for a 4.00x18. I recall seeing a picture of the MT43 on a CRF, and it looked big. Almost silly-big in that picture. I can't find that pic again right now, but if i do, I'll post.
Do you have the MT43 on the rear of the CRF230? Post a pic so I can see it please. Now that would be good feedback.
Here's some that say they like the MT43. https://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/857368-do-you-like-a-trials-tire-on-your-crf230/
And another:
The info seems to conflict. Seems its a great tire for a full frame bike, like WR250R, XR250, DRZ 400, KTM something, etc., but possibly too big for the CRF230. Unfortunately, a lot of posts start with "I don't own a CRF, but.." or "I own a CRF, but run this tire on my (some other bike)..." not very helpful to the cause.
Anyway, I posted this to find out about the IRC TR011 Tourist tire. Easily drawn off I guess.
If it fits it fits, doesn't matter how it looks.
If an MT 43 climbs hills "so well it seems like cheating" sounds like the perfect off-road tire.
May not be so great on the street????
Found the picture of an MT43 on the CRF. Its a little big, so I'm not sure that's the tire I want to put on.

Here's Rick's IRC trials tire (I think its a TR-1) from: http://rickramsey.net/CRF230F.htm
Yep, looks like they fit and sounds like they work well on a dirt (only) trail bike, but may or may not be the best on the street?
Here's Rick's IRC trials tire (I think its a TR-1)
Actually, it's a Vee Rubber VRM308 DOT trials-like rear tire as described in the chart and below the chart.
http://rickramsey.net/CRF230Fmods.htm#veerubber
I've noticed that all the rear competition trials tires and the trials-like (DOT) tires are pretty much the same size and they all 'fit' the CRF230F.
'Fit" used here means the tires fit the stock CRF23F rims and clear the swingarm. You may have to change the chain length so the tire doesn't hit the airbox mudflap.
The larger diameter of these tires will raise the rear of a CRF230F significantly and will quicken the steering so much that the bike may be unridable except on very easy terrain. You should try to correct for this by raising the triple clamps on the forks, mounting a larger front tire, changing suspension linkage, or switching to different forks.
The rear competition trials tire size is mandated by FIM regulations. I think the trials-like tires follow along for compatibility.
The competition trials tires have softer rubber and softer sidewalls than the trials-like DOT tires and perform much better. But the trials-like tires perform better than almost any knobby or other tire design.
I'm judging performance on trails in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado; all other locations may demand other tire designs.
I have also found that Kenda K270 tires are acceptable for some bikes and specific uses. The K270 is a step down in performance from the competition trails tires and trials-like (DOT) tires. They work acceptably on slightly less technical trails. They work very well on 4WD roads, dirt roads, and paved roads so are a good choice if you are riding long stretches of roads that connect trails. They come in lower profiles than the competition trials and trials-like (DOT) tires and don't affect steering geometry as much. They are better in mud as well, but obviously still short of knobby mud performance.
These are MHO, and not presented as fact.
After all, this is the internet...
Baja trail Rider
The 4.00R18 Comp Trials tires are a full section tire and taller than a knobby, equal to about 1/2 tooth on the countershft sprocket for gearing.

IRC TR-011 - Dirt Bike Motorcycle Tire Review - Dirt Rider Magazine
IRC Tire TR-011
I don't know who started it, but I'm copying. I have friends from Hawaii to Idaho to Michigan running trials tires on their dirt bikes, most of whom stick with them once they switch, so I had to give it a try. I chose the least expensive trials tire, the $115 IRC TR-011, for a workout. The tire, which is made for tubeless applications, has an extremely soft sidewall and some really gooey rubber, which you would think wouldn't last very long in the slide and shred trail riding world. In actuality, the sidewall is a harder rubber in IRC's dual-compound, radial-construction design. The age-old square-block design looks like nothing special.I was shocked once I began riding with the tire on the rear of a Yamaha WR250F. First, it didn't do anything funny, especially in the turns where I thought it would be much more prone to sliding out. Second, in deep sand the tire grips and pulls as good as any normal knobby. It doesn't have "moments" like a true sand tire does, yet it pulls consistently at any power level or wheel speed, spinning or gripping. In fact, the biggest thing about this tire is that the grip stays consistent all the time on any surface, and the slower the wheel is spinning, the better the traction is regardless of surface. The other thing the tire does, when run at pressures between 12 and 15 psi, is have great bump absorption, making the rear suspension feel even plusher. The TR does wallow around, which is noticeable on pavement, especially when it heats up. We ran it on our gnarliest trails, and it performed as well as any tire we've run, noticeably in, yes, you've guessed it, trials-like stuff. It even did great on a two-day, higher-speed Baja ride. The tire seemed less prone to spinning from a stop or when getting going on a steep incline, which means it is good for the trails, too.Durability is really good, considering the soft rubber. It has outlasted regular knobbies by approximately 50 percent. If there were any disadvantages to this tire, they are present when braking. If you skid the rear wheel, it tends to slide more and bite less, hence in racing conditions it may not be a good choice. You can also melt the knobs off the center of the tire in extended high-speed riding with a low (8 psi or less) pressure. But for my trailbike, I'll be running a trials tire for sure, beginning with this IRC. -Jimmy Lewis

IRC TR 1, anybody try one?
Discussion in ' Trials ' started by robodave , Sep 15, 2008 .
robodave Been here awhile
I am looking for a a trial tire to put on my exc 450. The regular trials tires burn off to fast on even short connection roads at dual sport events. Can anybody help?
motu Loose Pre Unit
That's interesting - it looks exactly like the TR11 Trial Winner, which is the trials tyre to have these days - it's so soft it needs a cardboard former to ship....without it flops on the floor like a wet sock. But the TR1 is a more dual purpose tyre, maybe like the Mitas ET01.So that gives me two tyres to choose from - I want to go 4.00x18 front and rear.
My thoughts exactly. I just went ahead and ordered one. I will add a heavy duty moose tube to go along with it. I will let you know how it goes.
I know this is a little late on the response. I finally got to try out the TR11 on the yz450f, on the rocks here at Rabbit Valley rim trail (western Colorado). With the Rekluse auto clutch and trials tire combo, It was never this easy. I played with it in the sand hill climb and no surprises. I still had the desert knobby on the front and could actually feel it slip on the rocks, Not the rear. We ripped up a set of knobbies on the 5 Miles of Hell trail a year ago in Utah. I ordered a set of TR1's front and rear and I am trying to get my kids to run the 5 MOH trail with me again. I will be swapping these tires/rims between my wr426f and my yz450f as needed. I ran about 12 psi because of the weight of the bike and my weight. I also because of the clutch I am able to crawl up the rocks and not rip out the knobs. Now to find a 19 in rear trials tire.
skadamo I like riding
Sorry to dig up an old thread but... Saber, how did these tires work out long term? The price seems great. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2/29/393/12642/ITEM/IRC-TR-1-Dual-Sport-Front-Rear-Tire.aspx

Did anyone get any more info on these TR-1 tires ? Thanks
buls4evr No Marks....
As a trials guy I can tell you that even the tire sellers are confused by these tires so know what you are ordering. You want the TR011R Trials winner front and rear radial tire not the TR1 which is a cheap bias tire used on early scrambler type bikes. The radial aspect is what makes them grip rocks. If you air them up over 6 lbs you are missing the point. Also they are not cheap...actually cost more than most HT knobbies. To put a lot of air in these because your bike is heavy defeats a lot of their footprint advantage. These tires are made for trials not trail riding. Especially if you overinflate them they will have a short lifespan. They willl be squirrely on blacktop, willl not meet DOT regs and will have unusual characteristics such as walking and weird braking. If you only ride in rocks on a light trials bike they work great though.
Boom Boom Been here awhile
Pirelli MT-43 for the enduro bikes. DOT legal also. Save the radial trials tires for the trials bikes. The MT-43 lasts much longer for trail / asphalt runs. I use it on my TE-510 - 300exc - WR-250, very happy with the overall performance. Michlin/Dunlop for the 4-RT.

Reviving a very very old thread: Just put the IRC TR1 3:00 21 on the front of my WR250R replacing the factory TrailWing. I have the Tubliss system front and back and have the MT-43 on the rear. The TrailWing wanted to slde out on me on loose gravel downhill turns. The TR1 sticks like glue. IRCTR1 John

Reviving the dead; do yourself a favor and try the TR1. By far the best tires I've had on my XR675, on and off. The rear instead of digging it grips, the front is marvel and I can hit 90s on road without any shakes! The 4.0 rear looks skinny but it has more traction than a 140!
MeterPig Meh
So, reviving this thread....you would run Tr1's on a 423 pound street bike on the pavement? I would think the lugs would start to melt off.
lamotovita DAMN SNOWBIRD!
Might as well throw this into the conversation, I don't know of a source in the USA for them so I haven't tried them. http://www.irc-tire.com/en/mc/products/dirt/tr-011tourist/ Edit, I just found the rear at Revzilla. It says it's a closeout though. http://www.irc-tire.com/en/mc/products/dirt/tr-011tourist/
I just ordered the Tourist rear from a different supplier in the U.S., about $11o. Thanks for reviving this thread to make me look for it. By the way, I wouldn't run TR1s on anything other than a vintage dual sport.
A follow up for anyone interested. I received my TR-011 Tourist tire today. It appears to me to be their competition TR-011 with load range information and a D.O.T. number molded onto it. If there's a difference in compound or construction I can't see it. So I guess this is the replacement for the old X-11 Michelin that was D.O.T. certified, other than that it's just a good radial, tubeless, Trials tire. I can't imagine it would last long on the street.
scruffy Been here awhile
I run these on the rear of my KTM 350 at 10 PSI and get around 600 mainly offroad miles out of them. They don't corner worth a damn but have great traction on all types of surface except deep mud. They even work well in soft sand. A friend tried them on a Ktm 525 and pretty much tore the knobs off. Not made for that much torque.

Sounds like a good compromise for someone that wants a DOT trials tire for crossing the street between trails and an almost competition worthy amount of traction...
