Frequently Asked Questions

Do i need a lot of space for a party.

No! We can set up in a 12x12 area on either grass or cement.  We will set up under either one or two 10x10 tents.  The pony can be walked on grass or cement anywhere nearby.  We just need a place to park and access to a water source for the animals!

What happens if the weather isn't good on that day?

We try our best to come even in inclement weather so as not to disappoint our guests.  Many clients put up tarps or tents to protect that area from the weather.  We bring two 10x10 tents for the petting zoo animals.  We can also set up in an indoor area such as a garage.  We will do our best to adjust the start time of your event around weather conditions if possible.  In the event that the weather is dangerous, we can reschedule for another mutually agreeable date.

Are you insured?

Yes! We are fully insured and follow strict safety procedures.  For corporate events and schools, we can provide a Certificate of Insurance as well as additional insured certificates.

Do you work with special needs children and/or adults?

Absolutely! We are certified teachers and have experience working with individuals with special needs.  We are happy to customize an event to suit the needs of your guests.  We understand the requirement for patience and dedication to all of our attendees.

Will you customize an event for us?

Just ask!  We will try our best to accommodate your wishes for an event relative to themes, location, hours, and audience.  It is our commitment to make your event special and memorable!

What makes you different from other pony/petting zoo events?

We pride ourselves on being a step above other pony/petting zoo events and make every effort to prove it.  Our format is fun, engaging, and interactive, and run by certified teachers who have experience in creating excitement! We are also animal lovers with a history in animal rescue, so our animals are given the best of care and lots of love.  We also have a background in event management, so we know what it takes to make an event successful and unforgettable!  We approach your event as if it was our own personal event and take pride in the smiling faces of our guests! Whether you're interested in entertainment or the healing power of animals, we like to say that, "We bring happiness!"

What FunNewJersey.com Says... ***** Highly Recommended!!!

Meet our very loved friendly farmyard animals, sparkle the pony, cocoa & marshmallow.

Always the star of the show, our beautiful and impeccably dressed girl is super sweet and ready to ride! Word on the street is that she sometimes is a magical unicorn for that very special birthday child! She loves her treats and poses patiently for photos!

Our twin boy and girl goats can't be more adorable or loving than these two, who love pets, treats and exploring their surroundings! They bring a smile everywhere they go, especially when they walk on leashes!

Freckles & Speckles

These two sisters sadly have crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge so we are not bringing sheep at this time.

Dunkin & Donut

The dixie chicks.

Dunkin and Donut are quite a couple and love their peas, their baths, and basking in the sunshine!  They are happy to accept treats out of your hand and Donut especially loves to be held!

We have four chickens that are very friendly and sweet so we named them after candy! Tootsie and Buttercup will often lay eggs right in front of you!  They will also fall asleep in your arms if you have the right touch. Cinnamon and Sugar were hatched from eggs and love attention!

Buddy & Oliver

Buddy, our Harlequin bunny, and Oliver, our lop bunny are ready to meet you and eat a carrot or two! Buddy likes to hide in the hay piles and lounge in the sun.  Oliver is a stuffed animal come to life and loves to be held and scratched on the head!

Munchkin the Duck

Our beautiful Appleyard duck can be seen spending time with Dunkin' & Donut will do almost anything for peas! He is very sweet and curious and will gently rest his head on your open hand. His striking green head and colorful feathers are amazing to see up close!

Poppy & Lily

There's quite a story behind these two, as Poppy got loose from a garden center and was running on her own for two weeks! We brought her sister Lily and were able to catch her.  In an ironic twist of fate, Lily turned out to be very sick and in need of of immediate vet care, so Poppy's rescue actually saved Lily's life! Mocha the Duck

Our sweet Mocha was hatched by us in 2020 and is a Rouen duck.  All she knows is love and kindness and is happy to eat peas or worms right from your hand!  Her pastimes are splashing in muddy puddles and sunbathing.

What Sets Us Apart?

Some fun facts about us! 🐇🐓🐐🐖

Once Upon a Farm is not your typical petting zoo. It’s owned and run by husband and wife Matt and Michelle. (and their five petting zoo assistant children who you may sometimes see helping out at events!)

In addition to sharing her farm animals with others at petting zoos, during the week Michelle is a special education preschool teacher who loves to bring the teaching aspect into petting zoos, especially during indoor petting zoo events.

What sets this petting zoo apart from others? Once Upon a Farm is a small family owned petting zoo that operates on a smaller scale than most other petting zoos. They book up quickly due to the fact that they only send out one crew at a time and the animals are never overworked. These adorable farm animals are happy, clean and healthy. Owner’s Matt and Michelle have a small farm in their backyard where all of the animals of Once Upon a Farm live happily as loved family pets. 🤍

“We make all your dreams come true by bringing our animal friends to you!”

Once upon a farm is the magical touch your event is looking for.

Once Upon a Farm is a family owned traveling mini petting zoo servicing Long Island, NY.  Our furry and feathered friends provide your event with an educational and hands on experience for all ages.

We Bring the Magic to You!

We bring our clean and adorable farm animals to you! We love what we do and enjoy sharing the joy of animals with others. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will help to insure that your event will be a memorable one!

Our Promise

Call of the Wild: NYC Zoos, Aquariums, Farms & Other Spots to See Animals Up Close

travel petting zoo nyc

Spring is here, and it’s a great time to head to a zoo, aquarium or even a farm outside the city. From an arty farm on the Upper East Side to stellar petting zoos great for little ones, aquariums and the world-class Bronx Zoo , we’ve rounded up the best places in the city to talk to (and often touch!) the animals. FYI: The cost of admission to many of these can add up, which is why a WCS membership is one of the best values in town.  Also note that you’re going to need to reserve tickets in advance for most of these destinations.

Petting Zoos Within Zoos

There is a children’s zoo at each of NYC’s four great zoos; a dedicated space carved out specifically for little ones, where they can explore at their own place. They can meet, touch and feed a variety of domestic animals.

The Central Park Zoo’s Tisch Children’s Zoo Yes, there is a zoo right in the middle of New York City, and it’s great!  Upon entering, kids are free to climb, crawl and roam free.  Then they can get a hands-on experience with some familiar animals like pot-bellied pigs, goats, sheep and also some not so familiar like the zebu, the Patagonian cavy or the mini Nubian goat. No matter how many times you visit. Zoo admission includes a bonus 4-D theatre experience.

Can you keep a pet capybara in NYC?

If you’re considering keeping a pet capybara in New York City, there are several regulations and restrictions that you need to be aware of. While these adorable creatures may seem like an appealing choice for a pet, owning one within city limits can present certain challenges and considerations.

Understanding the regulations and restrictions

New York City has specific regulations in place to ensure the safety and well-being of both the animals and the community. It’s important to familiarize yourself with these rules before considering bringing a capybara into your home.

Legalities surrounding ownership: Capybaras fall under the category of exotic pets, which means they are subject to stricter regulations compared to more common domesticated animals. As such, it is crucial to research and understand the legalities involved in owning a capybara within city boundaries.

Permits or licenses: To keep a pet capybara in NYC legally, you may need to obtain special permits or licenses. These documents demonstrate that you have met certain requirements set by local authorities regarding housing conditions, proper care, and safety measures for both the animal and those around it.

Challenges and considerations

Owning a pet capybara within New York City can pose unique challenges due to its urban environment. Before deciding on bringing one into your home, consider the following factors:

Space requirements: Capybaras are large rodents that require ample space to roam and exercise comfortably. Living quarters should mimic their natural habitat as closely as possible. In an urban setting like NYC where space is limited, providing adequate room for their physical needs might be challenging.

Socialization and companionship: Capybaras are highly social animals that thrive in the company of their own kind. Keeping a single capybara as a pet may lead to loneliness and behavioral issues. It is recommended to have at least two capybaras or provide opportunities for regular social interaction with other capybaras.

Specialized care: Capybaras have specific dietary needs, which include a high-fiber diet consisting of fresh vegetables and grasses. They also require access to water for swimming, as they are semi-aquatic creatures. Providing these specialized care requirements within an urban environment might require additional effort and resources.

Exploring alternative options

If owning a pet capybara in NYC is not feasible due to the regulations or challenges involved, there are still ways to interact with these fascinating animals:

Visiting petting zoos or wildlife centers: Many petting zoos or wildlife centers offer opportunities to interact with capybaras and other exotic animals in a controlled environment. These facilities often prioritize animal welfare while providing educational experiences for visitors.

Volunteer programs: Some organizations allow individuals to volunteer and work directly with capybaras and other animals in need. This can be a rewarding way to engage with these creatures while contributing to their well-being without the responsibility of ownership.

Capybara availability at zoos in New York:

If you’re a fan of capybaras and find yourself in the concrete jungle of New York City, fear not! There are several zoos across the state that offer the opportunity to get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures. From exhibits dedicated solely to capybaras to zoological institutions that house a captivating collection of exotic animals, there’s something for everyone eager to learn more about these adorable rodents.

Explore Different Zoos Across New York State

New York State is home to a variety of zoos that boast impressive collections of wildlife from around the world. Some zoos go above and beyond in showcasing these lovable creatures. One such zoo is the Bronx Zoo, located just a short distance from NYC. Here, visitors can marvel at an exhibit entirely dedicated to capybaras. These large rodents are known for their friendly nature and playful antics, making them a joy to observe.

Another zoo worth exploring is the Central Park Zoo, conveniently situated right in the heart of Manhattan. While this zoo may be smaller in size compared to others across the state, it still offers an opportunity to catch a glimpse of capybaras amongst its diverse range of animal residents. The Central Park Zoo provides an intimate setting where visitors can learn more about capybaras and their unique characteristics.

Plan Your Visits Wisely

When planning your trip to see capybaras in New York, it’s essential to consider each zoo’s operating hours and admission policies. Most zoos have specific visiting hours during which you can explore their exhibits and encounter these delightful creatures. To avoid disappointment or long queues, it is advisable to check the official websites or call ahead for information on opening times and any special events or exhibits featuring capybaras.

Some zoos may require advanced reservations or have limited availability due to the popularity of their capybara exhibits. It’s always a good idea to plan your visit in advance and secure your spot, ensuring you don’t miss out on the chance to witness these charismatic creatures in person.

Conservation Efforts and Learning Opportunities

Beyond providing entertainment and educational experiences for visitors, many zoos in New York actively participate in conservation efforts aimed at protecting capybara populations. These institutions play a vital role in raising awareness about the challenges faced by capybaras in the wild, such as habitat loss and illegal hunting.

By visiting these zoos, you not only have the chance to observe capybaras up close but also contribute to their conservation indirectly. The funds generated from admission fees often go towards supporting various conservation programs that aim to safeguard capybaras and other endangered species.

Moreover, zoos frequently organize educational programs, talks, and interactive exhibits where visitors can learn more about capybaras’ natural habitats, behaviors, and importance within their ecosystems. These learning opportunities provide a deeper understanding of why it is crucial to protect these remarkable animals for future generations.
