The Best Luggage Tags

Our six choices for best luggage tags displayed on a wooden surface

No matter what kind of bag you carry on your travels, a luggage tag will help you identify it quickly and get it back should it go astray.

A good luggage tag will be strong enough to survive airline baggage tossers and distinctive enough to stand out in a sea of black suitcases. We chose several that combine toughness and visual flair and that suit a wide range of budgets and styles.

All the luggage tags we selected should stay put through multiple adventures and be recognizable at a glance. But we also have options for a range of personal styles and travel needs.

We have picks that will either shield your contact information from view or display it openly, that are brightly colored or muted, and that hold a business card or let you write in your information. We also looked at what electronic smart luggage tags can and can’t do —and why most people are better off skipping them.

The research

A luggage tag for almost any trip: ovener silicone luggage tag, also consider: famavala 2x luggage tags, the best metal tag: cpacc aluminum luggage tags, best to stand out in a crowd: art of travel neoprene designer luggage tags, should you get a smart luggage tag, how we picked and tested, the competition.

The Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag, our pick for the best luggage tag, shown on a wooden background

Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag

Strong and easy to see.

Rugged silicone and a metal cable mean this tag (which comes two to a pack) may well outlive your luggage. The brightly colored case displays its owner’s name but keeps other personal information out of sight.

Buying Options

Get this if: You travel a lot and want a hard-wearing tag with easy-to-spot vivid colors that also keeps contact information—except for your name—under wraps.

Why it's great: The Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag has everything we’re looking for in a basic luggage tag. It is simple and inexpensive, and thanks to its tough materials and strong construction it will likely last as long (or maybe even longer) than your luggage. The silicone body seems nearly indestructible and is available in six bright colors as well as black and gray (you get two tags per pack). While other tags also feature metal cables, this tag has a metal grommet to keep the cable from eventually wearing through the silicone case.

A narrow window in the silicone lets only your name be visible—your address and contact information isn’t flashed to your fellow passengers.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: To fully access the info card, you have to unscrew and remove the metal strap. This lets the card slide out of the case. Most luggage tags we tested secure their info card in this way. It’s not a difficult or time-consuming process, but it is an extra step compared with tags that display all of your information openly. Still, for someone who wants to keep their contact information out of view, the extra step is worth it. On one of our samples, the metal grommet was loose, but on our second set they were fine.

Colors: orange, black, blue, green, red, yellow, purple, gray

The Famavala 2x Luggage Tag shown here with a faux-leather antique map print and a metal cable to attach the tag to one's suitcase

Famavala 2x Luggage Tags

Stylish and reasonably rugged.

The plastic “leather” body of these tags is almost as strong as silicone and keeps your personal information out of view. If you prefer distinctive patterns over neon-bright colors, these are a good choice.

Get this if: You want tags that are tough like the Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag and also keep your contact information shielded from casual passers-by, but you find the Ovener’s colors just too bright.

Why it's great: The Famavala 2x Luggage Tags are almost as tough as the Ovener, but their synthetic-leather bodies come in a range of decorative patterns instead of solid colors. The four sets of designs incorporate elements of old maps, space scenes, and psychedelic florals. As with the Ovener, each tag has a metal cable that is unlikely to break or wear out. But while the Ovener’s cable passes through a metal grommet, this tag’s cable passes through its body directly and could wear through it over time.

All your info is behind a small magnetically secured flap, hidden from casual view. Unlike the Ovener, the Famavala hides your name as well as your other personal information. You can view that information without taking apart the tag, however. If you’re looking for something distinctive and that will last, but isn’t so Day-Glo as the Ovener, this is a great option.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Though more ornate than the Ovener, these tags are not quite as noticeable from a distance. The metal cable could conceivably, if yanked hard enough, rip right through the narrowest part of the plastic body.

Styles: about half a dozen multi-colored designs

The CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tag, shown here in blue on a wooden surface

CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tags

All-metal toughness.

These metal luggage tags are as tough as tags made of silicone and hide everything but your name. They are more likely to scratch either paint or people, though.

Get this if: You’re metal, or you want your luggage tag to be. Like the Ovener, these tags hide your personal information (except for your name) from view and are tough enough to stand up to years of wear and tear.

Why it's great: Generally speaking, we’re not big fans of metal luggage tags. Their hard edges can catch on fabric and could scratch paint or people. (These aren’t necessarily likely scenarios, just more likely than with our picks made of silicone or plastic.) If you do opt for metal tags, we suggest going with CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tags . Each has an aluminum alloy body and a stainless steel cable that feels very secure. They offer a nearly identical feel and design as metal tags that cost several times more.

This tag comes in sets of either two or five tags (all the same color) and a set of seven tags (each a different color). It’s offered in a variety of hues, including bright options for visibility on the luggage carousel as well as ones that would blend into their surroundings.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Like the Ovener tag, this tag forces you to unscrew the strap’s clasp and take apart the tag to read the card inside. This isn’t some huge, laborious task, but it does take a few steps.

Colors: red, black, blue, gold, green, pink, silver

The Art of the Travel Neoprene Designer Luggage Tag featuring an abstract mountain and sun design, displayed to show the luggage tag's Name, Address, Email and Telephone Number fields

Art of Travel Neoprene Designer Luggage Tags

A whimsical tag.

This simple, stretchy tag comes in nine designs by several artists and can add some beauty and playfulness to your luggage ID.

Get this if: You find other tags boring and want something artsy to decorate your luggage. Also, if you prefer a tag that shows your information at a glance, instead of hiding it behind a cover.

Why it's great: The Art of Travel Designer Luggage Tags are probably the most lively looking luggage tags we tested. Nine designs are available from six artists in a variety of styles. You wrap the single-piece neoprene tag around the suitcase handle (or elsewhere) and tuck the label end through the loop end, pulling it taut. The neoprene is unlikely to tear, and the edges are well-stitched. It might not hold up for as long as our silicone or metal picks, but it should still last for several years of travel.

The information portion is fairly simple--it’s just a small, clear-plastic card in a clear-plastic pocket that’s always visible. Because the card, too, is clear, you can still see the design through the card. Also, the card seems to stick slightly to its holder, which makes it stay more securely.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Unlike our other picks, this one doesn’t hide your personal information. But as the supplied info card is clear plastic, the words can be hard to distinguish from the background pattern at a distance, even though your info isn’t hidden. There’s also no closure to the card pocket, although we didn’t have issues with the card falling out. The loop-through design feels fairly secure, though not as secure as a screw-on metal cable or a buckled strap.

Styles: about nine different designs from about half a dozen artists (designs and artists can change periodically)

We think a luggage tag containing a card with information printed on it is the best option for most travelers. There are, however, also a variety of smart luggage tags—that is, electronic devices meant to help you locate your luggage when it’s lost. After surveying the different types of smart tags out there, though, we didn’t find any that work well enough for us to recommend them for regular use on your luggage.

A common type of smart tag uses Bluetooth tracking to locate your luggage. In our research, we found the best Bluetooth trackers are the Apple AirTag (for iOS users) and the Tile system (for Android users). We also liked the Tile Slim and the Tile Sticker. These small, battery-powered devices pair with your phone. When the tracker gets far enough from your phone to break the connection, the Find My or Tile app notes where you were when it lost contact—the idea being that this is the “last seen” location. If you go back to where the phone last “saw” the tracker, hopefully you’ll be able to actually retrieve the tracker (and whatever it’s attached to).

The advantage of the AirTag over the Tile—as well as over any smart luggage tag—comes in what happens next. You can track it via Apple’s Find My app, which uses the Bluetooth in every iPhone, iPad, and Mac that’s on the network to passively and anonymously find lost iPhones, Macs, and, yes, AirTags. In practical terms, this means if you leave your AirTag-equipped suitcase on an airport shuttle, for example, as long as someone else on the shuttle has an Apple device, the suitcase’s location will be reported to you (and the person with the iPhone or other Apple device who identified it will never know). Although Tile’s trackers work the same way, they do so on a far smaller scale—given that about a billion Apple devices in the world are opted into the Find My network, it’s much more likely that the shuttle rider one seat back has an iPhone than a Tile. And the odds against a smart luggage tag’s tracker having a user network anywhere near as large as Apple’s are, well, astronomical.

The other smart tag options

In addition to Bluetooth trackers, there are a few other types of smart tags out there, none of which we recommend.

There are smart tags with QR codes or unique website addresses that claim to be smartphone-friendly. We felt these were the exact opposite, requiring the person who finds your luggage to be smartphone or Web literate, which, although likely, is not guaranteed. Also, it adds an extra, and in our opinion unnecessary, step between the person who finds your luggage and your info. If you don’t want to put your home address where everyone can see it, don’t: A phone number or email address should suffice.

There are also a handful of RFID luggage tags on the market, but like the QR code and other smart luggage tags it requires the finder of the lost luggage to have technical knowledge and, in the case of RFID, a special reader. Some airlines use RFID to track luggage, but unless you only fly with that airline and you’re positive the tag you’re getting works with their equipment, it seems an unnecessary cost for something that will rarely help.

And now for the creepy bit. There are tracking devices that you can use to find your luggage anywhere. These devices typically cost over a hundred dollars and require a monthly fee, often $25 to $50. This is because instead of connecting to your phone via Bluetooth, they connect with cell towers directly, which costs money. They’re essentially a smartphone, without the phone. Or the smarts.

In addition to being expensive, they also have the potential to be extraordinarily creepy. Each company selling these devices mentions that it can be used to track other things. Like your car, or your purse … or someone else’s car, or someone else’s purse. The ease to which these could be misused to track someone’s movement gives us significant unease about recommending any product of this type.

Given that there are countless luggage tags on the market, we stuck with the best-reviewed and most popular options from Amazon and well-known travel companies. There are plenty of choices to fit specific styles, but we were looking for a few baseline features important in any luggage tag. For instance, we felt that a sturdy tag was a must, given that it would have to survive being grabbed by not just you but also baggage handlers, cabbies and ride-hail drivers, and hotel employees. The fail point for nearly every tag is the strap or cable that connects it with the luggage, so we looked for a strap that both was firmly attached and could withstand regular use without breaking.

We picked options for tags to stand out or blend in—whether you like one or the other will depend on your personal style preferences. We were split on how important it is to hide your extended contact information, such as anything other than your name. Most of our picks ended up hiding this information from casual view, but we also have an option for people who want their info freely visible.

We sorted through more than 40 tags to figure out the best mix of visually interesting, sturdy, and otherwise worthy-seeming tags. Once the 14 most promising candidates were in hand, I tugged and smashed all our finalists, looking for potential fail points. Generally speaking, as mentioned above, where the strap meets the body is the most likely fail point. In some cases, it’s the strap itself. All our picks have straps that are as solid and secure as their particular material and type will allow. Which is to say, all leather straps will wear, and all plastic straps will likely become more brittle with age. Metal cables are the strongest, but they too might snap or even wear through the body of the tag. It’s something to keep an eye on if you have these tags for several years. If you want something indestructible, the tags with metal straps should wear the best. (Or you can get your own to add to any tag here.)

I also set up and tested the old Tile Pro and Slim to see if they’d work with luggage tags. Since Bluetooth range will vary significantly with how much material or walls are between you and the Tile, your specific mobile device, and so on, we didn’t try to verify Tile’s claims on range, other than that in the real world it will be much less than the ranges Tile claims.

Arlo Skye offered a leather tag with a comparable price to our former leather pick from Tumi, but it was available in a more sedate black, gray, and beige. As of fall 2023, the black and beige are back in stock, though the gray is still sold out.

The Talonport Bag Tag seemed as durable as the CPACC Aluminum tag and came with both a leather strap and a metal one. It also has a lifetime replacement guarantee. However, it was a lot more expensive than the CPACC.

The Tufftaag has sharper metal edges than the other metal options we considered, which didn’t seem ideal. This was a former pick of ours, and in our long-term testing we found that it is as rugged as it seems. It also has space for multiple address cards, which one tester found convenient. For most people, though, the soft silicone of the Ovener is the better option, and if you still want metal, the CPACC is just as good but less expensive.

We used to recommend tags from Tumi and Incase, but both have been discontinued.

Quanto custa a Inter Tag?

You know that feeling when you’re finally in the baggage claim area of your destination airport and a million identical suitcases pass you by — leaving you with no idea if any of them are yours?

Playing luggage bingo at the end of a long journey is never fun, and without an easily identifiable luggage tag, you could be playing it for some time to come.

Always tag your luggage, folks! Without a tag, your personal items could end up in someone else’s hands — or worse still, in another country. Name them to claim them!

Here’s how to make sure your luggage ends up in the right hands: yours.

Your luggage tags should be several things: easy to read, easy to recognize, and well-attached to your baggage. After all, your tag is of no use to you if it comes off before it’s even reached the hold.

Easy To See

Luggage Tags

If your tag isn’t visible enough to be seen as it spins along the carousel, is it even worth having? Whether it’s brightly colored or just oversized, visibility is vital when it comes to identifying your luggage.

Easy To Read

Easy to read luggage tag

The other great reason for strapping some sort of ID on your suitcase is that it offers a great way to name your luggage as your own. Your tags should clearly display your name, contact number or email, or other personal details.

Robust and Hard-wearing

Hardwearing luggage tag

Let’s be honest: airport handlers don’t treat our bags with as much love and care as we’d like. Whether it’s a designer suitcase or a much-loved old rucksack, they all get thrown onto the plane and off again without a second thought for their well-being.

This presents a risk for our luggage tags, too. All that rough and tumble can lead to the demise of delicate tags, and thin or paper-based tags can easily become completely separated from your luggage.

Hot Tip: Go for tags made of more durable materials like plastic, metal, or leather — and forget about those paper ones the airline gives you.

Well-secured

Well secured luggage tag

The way you attach your tag is also important. Keeping your tag firmly fixed to your luggage is kind of the whole point, so forgo flimsy materials and stick to heavyweight attachment pieces like leather or even steel — and find options that are flexible but firm.

Completely Unique

Whether you want a 5-inch Darth Vader overseeing your belongings or something more low-key, individuality is important. Find tags that look a bit different, and don’t just choose the one the suitcase manufacturer recommends — or you’ll soon find yourself trying to locate your case in a sea of identical ones, all with matching tags on them.

Better Than Anyone Else’s

Yes, we’re going there! Sometimes you need to step up your game to remain unique. By this we mean, it’s absolutely OK to show just how cool you are by securing a super-duper, tech-heavy luggage tag to your case next time you travel 🙂

Smart luggage tags are an actual thing — and they can help you locate your luggage by using Bluetooth (or other mystical tracking devices) that let you keep tabs on your tags and luggage at all times.

The 11 Best Luggage Tags on the Market

Not all luggage tags are created equal — which in this case is good because you want yours to be special, unique, and oh-so-easy to spot from a mile away.

When it comes to practicality and durability, some are miles ahead of others. Here are some of the very best luggage tags your money can buy:

  • Shacke Initial Luggage Tag

Big, bold, bright, and rubbery, these tags can be personalized to feature your own initial . Waiting to see your special letter whiz past you on the luggage carousel adds a touch of child-like excitement to your baggage collection experience.

Not only are these available in this beautiful green color, but they also have an awesome rubberiness about them, making them nice to fiddle with while you wait to check your baggage in.

Shacke offers these luggage tags in a few other colors, too. And just to be certain your personalized tag doesn’t become separated from your bag, these little beauties are attached using a bendable metal chain that’s guaranteed to stay put.

On the reverse side, there is the usual space for inputting your name, address, phone number, etc. — so should your luggage go somewhere without you, it can easily be reunited.

What We Like

  • Bright and easy to spot on the carousel

What We Don’t Like

  • The ID card can fall out easily if bent

  • Personal information is concealed unless deliberately accessed
  • Tags are quite heavy

Tile Mate Essentials Bluetooth Tracker 4 Pack

Want to look supercool when you collect your luggage? Then let us present the Tile Mate Essentials Bluetooth tracker set. This is a set of tags that can be attached to your luggage, slipped inside your wallet, or even stuck to an item, such as your cell phone.

For locating luggage, simply attach the Tile to your bag and activate the app on your smartphone. Once the Tile is within 100 feet of your Bluetooth signal, it will locate your bag and announce it to you with a rather loud sound.

The Tile Tags come with a precut hole for attaching to your luggage — but these tags are so advanced, you can also just drop them inside your bag and the tracker will still be able to find them . You’ll look like a rockstar around the carousel as your phone beeps to announce the arrival of your luggage!

These aren’t just for travel either — you can use them around the home or office to locate your phone or other easy-to-misplace items, and Tile can even tell you where you last left something.

Despite being a great bit of tech, you would still need some form of alternative luggage tag so airport staff can identify your name and address if there’s a mistake with handling your luggage.

  • Handy for locating your luggage when you can’t see it
  • Requires app location services to be activated all the time

No super-tech benefits with these tags, but they’re made to last and look quite cool — an addition anyone on a budget would be proud of.

  • Available in a range of metallic colors
  • Steel cable attachment can be a bit fiddly

Remember when you were at school and your mom would write your name on your bag to stop it from going home with the wrong kid?

Well, luggage tags are like a grown-up version of mom-marking, meant to help you identify your bags in a world full of duplicates (and guarantee their safe return if things do go astray).

So invest in tags that have the strength to remain attached to your bag, and that can safely convey your personal details — whether they’re printed, handwritten, or digitally stored somewhere out there in the ether.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you put on your luggage tags.

Your luggage tags should have just the basic contact details that makes it easy for an airline to get in touch with you should it go missing. Your initial, last name, email address, and contact number will be all you need.

Do airlines provide luggage tags?

Some airlines might provide free luggage tags at the check-in desk, but this is quite rare and they are usually of low quality. You are better off purchasing decent luggage tags that will be robust enough to last many trips.

How big is a luggage tag?

Luggage tags can vary in size but most luggage tags will be credit card-sized or smaller.

What are the best luggage tags to buy?

Not all luggage tags are created equal — which in this case is good, because you want yours to be special, unique, and oh-so-easy to spot from a mile away.

When it comes to practicality and durability, some are miles ahead of the others. Here are some of the very best luggage tags your money can buy:

  • Tile Mate and Tile Slim Bluetooth Tracker Set

Where do you attach luggage tags?

You should attach your luggage tags to your checked and carry-on luggage for easy identification. You can usually attach these to the bag handles or through the hole of a zipper.

What to Know if You Plan to Travel Abroad With AirTags

Apple's new AirTag item trackers are ideal for attaching to things like bags and luggage cases, which makes it likely they'll become popular with travelers and backpackers who want to keep tabs on their personal possessions abroad.

For this reason, it's worth remembering which AirTag features work wherever you are, which ones depend on you being nearby the ‌AirTag‌, and which functions aren't supported in certain countries and regions.

Locating AirTags Using Precision Finding

AirTags can be tracked in Apple's Find My app, which uses Bluetooth signals from a lost ‌AirTag‌ to relay its location back to its owner. Apart from Bluetooth, each ‌AirTag‌ is also equipped with a U1 Ultra Wideband chip, and on devices that also have U1 chips, there's a Precision Finding feature that enables you to more accurately determine the distance and direction of a lost ‌AirTag‌ when it's in range, when compared to Bluetooth alone.

Finding Nearby AirTags Using Bluetooth

In countries where Precision Finding isn't available, ‌AirTag‌ owners can still fall back on Bluetooth to locate a missing item if it is approximately 30-40 feet within range. There are built-in speakers to play a sound to find a lost ‌AirTag‌, and you can either play a sound through the ‌‌Find My‌‌ app or ask Siri to find an ‌AirTag‌ with a sound.

Finding AirTags using the Find My Network

You can still track the location of an out-of-range ‌AirTag‌ in Apple's ‌Find My‌ app, but you won't be relying on the Bluetooth signals of your own device. Instead, the ‌‌Find My‌‌ Network takes advantage of nearly a billion Apple devices out in the world to help you locate your ‌AirTag‌, with the associated item showing up on the map when it's located by someone else's device.

However, if you're traveling in a remote region, be aware that if an ‌AirTag‌ isn't nearby and there are no Apple devices in the area in which it's located, ‌Find My‌ will only be able to tell you where it was last seen on the map.

This author of this article doesn’t seem to understand how Ultra Wideband works. It’s between iPhone and AirTag and has nothing to do with the country you’re in. It will even work on the Moon, as the system only uses cellular data to relay location to devices other than your own phone.

Ultra Wideband isn't universally supported worldwide, therefore Precision Finding won't work in the following countries:

The TFG community has been abuzz with tips and recommendations for luggage tracking devices and tags, and many now see them as an absolute must-have travel item. Find out why you need this travel accessory, and take a look at the top reader recommendations!

Best Luggage Tag Options for Travel

Table of contents.

Air travel can, at times, be unpredictable, and with all the news of lost luggage and delayed or canceled flights, readers are taking matters into their own hands with travel luggage tags and trackers.

Why Travel with a Luggage Tag?

While cute luggage tags certainly spice up your suitcase’s look, they’re not always the most effective option if your bag were to get lost or stolen. Readers highly suggest putting a smart tag inside your suitcase so that you’ll always be able to track it with your phone and know exactly where it is.

You could also opt for a durable travel luggage tag to secure onto the outside of your suitcase, where you can include information for others to contact you with. Practical luggage tags will be made of durable materials like aluminum and provide a reliable way to write down your contact information. Some options even have QR codes for people to scan if they find your lost suitcase!

Many readers do both – use a smart tracker on the inside and a durable luggage bag tag on the outside.

How Does a Luggage Tracker Work?

Luggage trackers, or smart luggage tags , are a hot topic in the TFG community, and many readers can’t recommend them enough!

A luggage tracker is a small device that you link to your smartphone and then place inside your luggage (or on any item you want to keep track of). Then, through either GPS, Bluetooth, or Wifi, depending on the device, you can watch your suitcase be loaded onto the airplane, head to baggage claim, check in on it at your hotel, or be notified if it leaves your vicinity for whatever reason – all in real-time!

Because they’ve been such a lifesaver for readers who have lost their luggage and found it due to these devices, many now put them in their purses and other belongings, too, especially when traveling to places with a higher risk of theft or if it’s something they commonly misplace!

You’ll definitely want to be adding one of these reader favorites to your next packing list!

Apple AirTags

This Apple luggage tracker is raved about by TFG readers. You simply connect it to the Find My app, and it’ll track any belonging with incredible precision – even if you’re on a different continent! As long as someone else’s iPhone is close to your AirTag, encrypted Bluetooth technology will help you track your belonging in the app.

You can also have the AirTag play a loud sound to find your bag in a sea of others or put it in lost mode to get notified of its location whenever it’s detected in the Find My network. As a bonus, it’s both water and dust-resistant, and the battery lasts over a year, so it’s perfect for long trips or just day-to-day use! Note that these are only compatible with Apple devices.

One reader raves, “I have a total of eight now. I have them on anything of value while traveling. Even bought a case with a slot for the AirTag for my AirPods. They are my number one must-have travel item now. Sometimes the 4-pack goes on sale!” Another says, “Buy. The. AirTags! A $27 purchase prevented me from losing over $600 in belongings.”

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag

For Samsung users, the Galaxy SmartTag is the one for you. Very similar to the Apple version, this luggage tracker tag will help you locate your items through the SmartThings app.

It’ll lead you right to your suitcase as long as it’s within 390 feet, or if it’s close by, you can use the ring button to follow the sound. If your bag is out of range, you can tap into the Galaxy Find network to track it! The battery lasts up to a year, depending on the frequency of use, and users say it’s easy to change.

A reader shares, “Last month, I successfully used four Samsung Galaxy SmartTags in two different airports in Europe to track my bags. I was able to see how one bag got separated from the others in Barcelona and watch it make its way to the plane after the others arrived. It works the same way as AirTags, just with Samsung devices to ping off of.”

They also have a QR code on them, so if it’s attached to your wallet or keys, others can simply scan the code to get your contact info. They’re water-resistant and have a solid battery life of one year.

A reader says, “Have used this for years. Pairs with Bluetooth on your phone. I have three Tiles, and each has a different ring with no interference. Great product for those, like me, who misplace keys constantly!”

ATUVOS Airport Luggage Tag

The Atuvos Bluetooth tracker for luggage is an excellent budget option with great reviews. Stash it in the inside of your suitcase or clip it to any important item to track it when it’s up to 400 ft away, or use the Find My app (on an iPhone) to view its most recent locations.

This Atuvos tracker is only compatible with Apple devices, and just like the AirTags, it can use any other Apple device in the vicinity of this tracker to let you know where your item is! It’s compact, durable, water-resistant, and has a loud and clear ring so you can find it easily when it’s nearby. The battery will easily last you a year, and it’ll remind you when it needs replacing.

A user says, “This thing is awesome! This gives timely ‘left behind’ alerts and has VERY reliable community find, given it has access to Apple’s Find My network. Will be buying more of these for sure.”

Pebblebee Tracking Device for Luggage

The Pebblebee Bluetooth luggage tag is another great pick for both iOS and Android users. It has an impressive Bluetooth range of 500 ft, but with the Pebblebee app or Find My network, your lost item can be tracked from any distance! It’s super compact, water-resistant, emits a loud buzzer to guide you to your items, and lasts up to six months before having to charge it again.

Users say it’s precise and really easy to use. A traveler shares, “Used it for my vacation luggage and felt confident! The app is super cool too.”

Tracki GPS Luggage Tracker

Tracki’s mini GPS tracker for luggage is incredibly accurate and will show you every single location it’s been to and exactly where it is in real-time, no matter the distance. An international SIM card is included, so even if it’s in another country, you’ll know exactly where your Tracki is. The one caveat is that there’s a $10-$20 monthly fee, but users say it’s worth it for the peace of mind — plus, you can always deactivate it whenever you’re not traveling.

The battery will last anywhere from five days to 75 days, depending on whether you’re tracking consistently or only occasionally. You can also choose to be notified when the tracker starts to move, there’s low battery, an SOS button is pressed, or it enters or leaves a Geo-fence that you’ve set!

A traveler reports, “I used this luggage GPS tracker on my trip to Iceland and the device worked well. I was able to track it at the connecting airport in the US and final destination both ways without issues. Had no issues leaving this on for 24 hours plus. Overall would recommend this device to track checked luggage.”

Chipolo One & One Spot Airport Luggage Tags

The Chipolo ONE and Chipolo ONE Spot trackers will show you your suitcase’s location on a map when it’s out of Bluetooth range, which is 200 ft, and can ring to help you spot it when it is in range! Many users compare them to the Apple Airtags, saying they’re a bit less expensive, a little louder, and have a keyring hole built in.

Chipolo ONE uses the Chipolo app, which is compatible with both Apple and Android devices, while the Chipolo ONE Spot uses the Find My app, which is only compatible with Apple devices.  Both of them are sturdy, water resistant, and have a long battery life that lasts up to a year. Another really great feature is that if you ever misplace your phone, you can double press the Chipolo to ring it!

A user shares, “This makes a loud beeping noise to locate and works very well with the Find Me app on iOS. I tested this out with my luggage to track down where it was after landing and was easily able to locate it.”

The luggage tag strap is made of steel, and the tag is made of aluminum, so you can rest assured that it’s not going anywhere! While you can’t track this luggage tag remotely, you’ll be automatically notified via email whenever the tag is scanned with the IP address and location that it was scanned from.

A traveler says, “I really like this concept of smart ID tags where I could update the address at my destination from my phone. If my bags miss the connections, I have one less thing to worry about while rushing from one gate to another!”

Dynotag Smart Recovery Luggage ID Tags

This Smart Recovery Tag is another cool luggage tag option to keep your suitcase secure, as well as a host of others things you might misplace. One user shares more, “I like the idea that only someone who really has a ‘need to know (that is, who has found and wants to return something I’ve lost!) can see my contact data. We’ll be using them on luggage as well as on our keys. I really like that these tiny tags will stay neat, new-looking, and unobtrusive. And I love the idea that I can easily alter my info on their website anytime I like. Well worth the modest price!”

I started putting an Air Tag in my luggage for the first time this year. I have been carry on only for decades now. However, you never know if suddenly the overhead bins are full and they insist on checking your bag! Now they cannot say they don’t know where your bag is when you deplane. Air Tag to the rescue! I also recently changed my luggage tag to one that has a metal cord. No flimsy strap that accidentally gets pulled off! Thanks for all the ways we can better keep track of our luggage!

LuckyLadyMEM

Love my airtags! I have 5 now (gave the other 3 to my daughter). I store the battery in its case (on Amazon) so I have fresh batteries when I’m ready to travel.

Eva

Hi, great overview! I was wondering whether to place my Apple AirTag in my checked-in luggage, however what always stopped me was the fear that it has a battery, and all batteries are prohibited in the checked-in luggage, due to fire safety. Are the trackers than exempt from this rule? Thank you!

Alex

Hi Eva, that’s a great question. Lots of our readers have traveled with their apple AirTags in their checked luggage and no one has reported back that they’ve had any issues.

But to get the best advice we would also recommend checking directly with your airline.

Happy travels!

Ellen

If it’s a lithium ion battery then no, you can’t leave it in your checked luggage–lithium ions are the batteries that can start a fire. If it’s not, you’re OK. I have to remove the lithium battery from the charger on my Away suitcase. But definitely check with your airline!

Customer Reviews

It is a perfect companion for travelling and for being shure not to lose your baggage. Also in daily business, it is very handy for securing your handbag or briefkasten.

After several months and numerous flights, including two international trips, I absolutely love these devices. I have 8 of them presently. 1 on my backpack and 1 on my luggage that have made most every one of the 13 trips I have taken since purchasing the Scouts. They have put my mind at ease knowing exactly where my gear is, right down to the lack of Delta, ATL not getting my luggage on to a Montreal flight. Delta couldn’t catch up to my schedule for three days and I knew right where that bag was. Two on 65lbs tool boxes, that get banged around and left in shops. I just activate the alarm and not worry about my gear being messed with. Picture is the first time recharging them since my first trip with them several months ago. If anything changes, I will be sure to update with my findings, however as of today I will swear by my purchase of these Scouts and keep bragging about them.

User picture

Bought 3 Scout Tavel tags. All worked on one trip but now none will reconnect. Have tried factory reset to no avail.

Sorry to hear this Ian! Our customer service team will reach out to you to troubleshoot this problem with you and we should be abe to get these up and running again for you.

Be it a bike light or bluetooth speaker, Knog makes an excellent product at a decent price point. I've been not only pleased but impressed with the quality and engineering of my past purchases and so I didn't hesitate to buy 2 Scout Travels. Truth be told, I am not the most digital savy person which means that for me, pairing them to my IOS device was challenging. After spending a good couple of hours, one paired and one did not. I've tried several times to do a factory reset of the unpaired unit. No luck. So, as they say, my adventure so far is bitter sweet.

Bought two for our luggage and just returned home after a very long trip to Antarctica. These performed flawlessly, held their charge and gave us confidence on our luggage. I could even connect from my airplane seat. One suggestion is to make the QR code in contrasting colors so the handlers can see it if needed.

Exactly what contact information you share is entirely at your discretion, and can be updated in real-time via the Knog App. In addition, when someone scans your QR code and sees your details, they’ll also be prompted to send you a message from the contact details page. If they do, you’ll be alerted that someone has scanned your tag and / or got in touch and their message will be emailed to you. E.g. “Your bag has been left with Qantas baggage services”.

Utilise Apple Find My Network

With Scout Travel attached to your luggage, you can enjoy the peace-of-mind of always being able to check exactly where your belongings are anywhere, anytime, by simply using the Apple Find My app.

Motion-Sensitive 85 dB Alarm

The best security features are those that deter the loss of your luggage in the first place. Which is why the 85db motion-sensitive alarm at the heart of Scout Travel’s design is a truly outstanding feature. From sitting in a busy café to storing luggage in a hotel lobby, increase peace-of-mind by arming Scout Travel via the Knog app, with any subsequent movement of its accelerometer triggering the impossible-to-ignore 85db alarm on Scout Travel, while also triggering an audible alarm on your iPhone (when in Bluetooth range). This alert gives you the opportunity to take action and recover your belongings.

Secure Attachment

Every aspect of Scout Travel has been designed with security in mind, and nothing communicates this more overtly than our tamper-proof security cable attachment. Constructed from a braided stainless-steel cable coated with a non-abrasive nylon, Scout Travel’s tether allows for a highly secure attachment that won’t damage the very thing it is attached to. Every Scout Travel comes supplied with two cable lengths, to cater for different needs. The tether attaches to Scout Travel via an anti-tamper security bolt that requires the use of the supplied Knog anti-tamper tool to remove it.

No Subscriptions Fees

Unlike GPS-based trackers, Scout Travel’s compatibility with the Apple Find My network means that once you have purchased a Scout Travel there are no ongoing subscription fees to worry about.

Separation Alerts

There’s no need to stress about leaving your carry-on behind or someone taking your luggage off the bus. With separation alerts enabled in the Apple Find My app, you’ll get a notification if your Scout Travel drops out of bluetooth range. You can also set Trusted Locations, which are locations where you can leave an item without receiving a notification.

Scout Travel is USB-C rechargeable and utilises a high-performance 155 mAh LiPo battery, removing the need for single use batteries. A fully charged Scout Travel provides up to 2 months of use between charges. We have also taken the guesswork out of knowing the amount of remaining battery life, as the Knog app will send a notification to your iPhone once the device has only 20% charge remaining, giving you plenty of notice to recharge the unit.

Built Tough For Real-World Travel

Scout Travel has been designed for travel. Constructed from fibre-reinforced plastic and then over-molded in silicone, Scout Travel is purpose-built to cope with the rigorous demands of travel; however rough things get. Backed by Knog's 2 year warranty.

Remote Chime Function

Many travellers have been in a scenario where they need to identify their belongings in a pile of very similar-looking luggage. This is where Scout Travel’s remote chime function is useful. Using the Knog app, you need only activate their remote chime and a sound will emit from your Scout Travel, making finding your luggage easy.

NFC Technology & Lost Mode

If a Scout Travel attached piece of luggage is lost, you can open the Apple Find My app and turn on Lost Mode. Then once it is detected by a device in the Apple Find My network, you will automatically receive a notification. You can also set it so someone can get your contact info by tapping the Scout Travel with an NFC-capable smartphone (most do).

Charge & Pairing Indicating LEDs

Our Intelligent LEDs take the guesswork out of using your Scout Travel. The LED glows Blue when it is actively paired with your iPhone. This same LED glows Red whilst charging and then turns Green once fully charged.

Water Resistant

Scout Travel is showerproof but please don’t go chucking it into the hotel pool.

Privacy Is Always Priority

Only you can see where your Scout Travel is. Your location data and history are never stored on the Scout Travel itself. Devices that relay the location of your Scout Travel also stay anonymous, and that location data is encrypted every step of the way. So not even Knog or Apple know the location of your Scout Travel or the identity of the device that helps find it.

Why We Like It: It folds to keep your personal details concealed.

What You Should Know: Subtle colorways can be hard to see.

When searching for the best luggage tags to meet the needs of your next trip, keeping your personal information safe probably came up. Sometimes, a simple folding label is all you need. The Away Luggage Tags fold in the center to ensure your address and phone number aren't displayed to the world. Plus, there are a few fun colorways to choose from.

It comes with a paper sheet to write your information inside, or you can print something on your printer at home. This luggage tag is crafted from leather, which looks and feels professional. The attachment strap isn't attached to the tag itself, which makes putting it on more straightforward, but it means there's a chance you could lose it in between trips.

Finding your luggage is a lot easier with suitcase tags like these, whether you're traveling for work or pleasure.

RIMOWA Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Lots of colorway options.

What You Should Know: If you pick a vibrant color, it might not match your luggage.

If you’re looking for something as vibrant as your personality, look no further than the Rimowa Luggage Tag. At the time of writing, there are nine colorway options, many of which are fun and eye-catching. Choosing something this distinctive makes it easy to find your bag at the luggage claim; however, if you update your bag, you run the risk of clashing colors.

These luggage identifiers don’t come with a piece of paper to write your information onto and slot back inside, which is a bummer. However, the Nappa leather is sleek, they’re crafted in Italy, and you can customize what information you want on the identifier if you make it yourself.

If you want something to brighten your mood at the airport baggage claim, these might be the best luggage tags for you!

MIFFLIN Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Simple design at a budget price.

What You Should Know: Not unique looking, long-term durability concerns.

If you’re traveling with a group or have multiple pieces of luggage you want to tag, the best luggage tags for you are probably budget-friendly. The Mifflin tags come in various pack sizes and colors to meet your needs. The materials are hard plastic that scuffs up reasonably easily. However, coming in at under $10 for three, we aren’t too surprised.

These little cute luggage tags come with a piece of paper to write your information on, so all you need is a writing utensil. The attachment loops give us longevity concerns; however, we haven’t broken any so far.

If you’re looking for luggage tags on a budget, look no further.

ban.do Getaway Suitcase Tag

Why We Like It: Fun colorways and designs.

What You Should Know: Not many minimalist options.

Even if you opt for a minimalist-looking rolling luggage set, there’s nothing wrong with spicing up your life with a vibrant design. The ban.do Getaway Leather Luggage Tag comes in a handful of fun patterns, some of which have fun sayings. They’re crafted from vegan leather, so no animal products were used to create them.

If you want minimalism over everything, these might not be the best luggage tags for you. However, for folks who like finding gear that makes them stand out in the crowd, ban.do has some cute luggage tags you might enjoy. Personal favorites in the office are Rainbow Stripe and Superbloom!

Theys come with a slip to write your information on, and it’s covered by a piece of material that secures with a button, so your digits aren’t out there in the world while you’re exploring it.

Longchamp Le Foulonne Leather Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: The leather grain is sleek but professional.

What You Should Know: The leather look isn’t for everyone.

If you’re looking for the best luggage tags that look professional and come in a handful of colorways, check out the Longchamp LE FOULONNÉ Leather Luggage Tag. The matte leather exterior looks sleek and fun to play with while waiting to check your bag.

The tag secures using a pin buckle. The strap doesn’t feel super durable; however, we’ve had no issues with it breaking. There’s no paper to write your name on included, so you’ll have to make your own. This takes some time but ensures you can maximize the space and only put the information you want to on there.

For a fancier look, these are some of the best luggage tags for airline travel!

Travelambo Faux Leather Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Budget price and loads of colorway options.

What You Should Know: Long-term durability concerns.

Sometimes simplicity is all you need, especially when searching for the best luggage tag for you. The Travelambo Luggage Tags offer a basic design that’s easy to use and comes at a budget-friendly price.

At the time of writing, there are three dozen color options, ranging from black to sparkly pink. The packs come with two, so you can share one with your partner or save one for later if your first one breaks.

At less than $10, durability is bound to be an issue. However, we have no problems to report so far. They’re not well suited for more durable adventures but will work for most other trips.

Boarding Pass NYC A Pair of Custom Brown Leather Luggage Tags

If you’re looking for a set of custom luggage tags that will make you the envy of all the travelers waiting to check their bags in, look no further than the Boarding Pass Custom Leather Luggage Tags. There are a few colors, so you can find a model that fits your vibe.

Your luggage will stand out if it isn’t as fancy as the tag. However, we’ve found they go well with many travel backpacks we’ve reviewed here at Pack Hacker. Plus, you can customize them with your information, so you don’t have to worry about writing everything down.

If you change your address, you will have to get new tags. However, if you keep the same phone number, you can put that only on the leather. If you’re looking for something unique, these might be the best luggage tags for you.

Apple AirTag Leather Loop

Why We Like It: You can track your luggage anywhere.

What You Should Know: Easy for thieves to see.

In the modern technological age, you don’t necessarily need to write anything down to make your luggage easy to find. With the rise of tracking devices, you can attach one to your luggage to ensure you know where it is from boarding to pickup. This AirTag luggage tag is easy to use and durable for your next adventure.

It’s crafted from leather, with a sleek look that feels just as comfortable in first class as in the back of a pickup truck. The AirTag isn’t included, so you’ll have to purchase that too.

If you don’t want to place it on the pack’s exterior, you can put it inside your bag instead. Plus, once you arrive, you can attach your AirTag to other gear you don’t want to lose, like your daypack or sling .

TUMI Accent Kit

Why We Like It: Comes with everything you need to help you find your luggage.

What You Should Know: A bit pricey for what you get.

If you’re looking for more than just a set of luggage tags, Tumi has you covered. Their Accent Kit has two monogram patches, a leather handle wrap, a luggage tag, and eight leather zipper pulls. They all match—so your gear will go together nicely.

If you only want the luggage tag, getting the set isn’t the most economical option. However, for those looking to take their pack customization level at the airport game to the next level, look no further. It’s a little pricey for something simple, but sometimes the small things are worth paying for.

The set is designed to work with Tumi luggage but will work with most travel backpacks and daypacks.

WaterField Designs AirTag Leather Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: It can hold an AirTag and your personal information.

What You Should Know: Not a lot of variety when it comes to colorways.

If you’re set on having a classic-looking luggage tag but want the modern conveniences of an AirTag, the Waterfield AirTag Leather Luggage Tag was made for you. In addition to having your information on a placard, there’s a dedicated spot to stow your AirTag so that you know your luggage made it onto the plane, when it starts spinning around the baggage area, and where it went off to should it be stolen.

The tag is crafted from leather, which is durable, looks sleek, and is comfortable to hold. Your personal information is hidden behind a flap of leather that secures so nobody can look you up without a bit of effort. Plus, there are a few leather colors to choose from, so you can find the best luggage tags for your style. The variety isn’t anything to write home about, but we’re happy enough with Waterfield’s high-quality leather materials.

This model is relatively large; however, it doesn’t feel too bulky when on your pack. The added peace of mind of knowing where your luggage is at all times is worth the extra grams it adds onto your back!

Kate Spade Cat I.D. Clip

Why We Like It: It’s a cat.

What You Should Know: Long-term durability might not hold up.

You might not be able to take your cats on your next trip, but you can keep them close by in spirit. The Kate Spade Cat I.d. Clip is technically designed to hold your identification card; however, it can be used as a luggage tag on the exterior or interior of your pack. The design is fun, and the odds are low that anyone else will have the same luggage tag at the baggage claim.

You’ll have to make your own information card, either by hand or with a printer, which you can design to feature pictures or drawings of your cat, so anyone who finds it knows why your bag sounds like it has dozens of exotic cat toys inside. We’re a little skeptical of the durability of the connector, but we haven’t had any issues in testing so far.

If you’re a cat lover, this might be one of the best luggage tags available for you.

Sodsay Plastic Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Budget-friendly and comes in bulk, so you have enough for the whole family.

If you’re bringing the whole family on your next trip and want to ensure you have luggage tags for everyone, the Sodsay Baggage ID Label Tags are worth looking at. There are ten in a package, so there’s enough for everyone. It’s a simple design: a thin piece of plastic that enables you to see the information written on the included card when you’re close.

When you’re further away, it’s harder to decipher what’s written, which is an excellent security feature. The tags feel durable enough; however, we’re uncertain how long the attachment loop will last. No issues to report yet, though!

There are a handful of colorways available. The brighter options are ideal for those who want to be able to see their luggage when it rolls around the baggage claim. The black option is sleek, which we dig aesthetically.

Whichever you go with, these luggage tags won’t break the bank and will ensure you can prepare the whole family!

Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Comes with multiple tags and has multiple colorway options

What You Should Know: The design can be seen as childish

If you’ve poked around Amazon while looking for the best luggage tags for your next trip, you’ve probably come across the Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag. They’re well-reviewed, come in a plethora of colorways, and are budget-friendly. Plus, the metal attachment is more durable than the leather or plastic options we’ve seen elsewhere.

There’s a small plane cutout on one side and a small slit for your name on the other. The silicone exterior material covers the rest of your information so that nobody can see your sensitive information. The exterior can pick up dust, but it’s straightforward to clean and take care of on the road.

The airplane design could be seen as childish, but we think it’s a fun way to get you in the mood for your next trip and ensures you know what it is if you find it out of context in your apartment. At the price, it’s hard to find a better simple option.

Famavala Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Unique colorway and design options.

What You Should Know: The metal attachment ring can be hard to use.

If you want your luggage tags to be as out of this world as traveling feels, the Famavala Luggage Tags are up your alley. The colorways are vibrant, trippy, and fun to look at, which will brighten your trip to the airport and add personality to your pack. With six options to choose from at the time of writing, you can find one that works for you.

The materials feel cheaper than the premium leather models we’ve tested in the past; however, you can’t go wrong with the price. We haven’t had any durability issues, which is essential to note. The metal fastener is robust and ensures the tag won’t fall off your pack, but the screw can be hard to use if you have larger hands or struggle with small objects.

The tag comes with a piece of paper to write your information on, so you don’t have to make your own, which we dig. From Bluesky to Skystar, the Famavala Luggage Tags might be the best luggage tags for you.

CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Durability is top-notch, and the price is spectacular.

What You Should Know: Corners are a little sharp.

Here at Pack Hacker HQ, we’ve been using CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tags for over a year. For what, you might ask? Well, that’s top-secret intel. Pack Hacker Pro Members are invited to visit us here at HQ, so your chances of getting security clearance rise dramatically if you join!

Silliness aside, these tags are durable and easy to see, thanks to their vibrant colorway. The aluminum and steel construction can handle the most rugged adventures, whether you’re crossing the desert or climbing a mountain. Similar to other metal ring attachments, it can be hard to open and close them if you have larger hands. Luckily, once you attach it, the ring won’t come undone until you unscrew it again.

A budget price and durable construction make these one of the best luggage tags on the market!

So there you have it; some of the best luggage tags to take on your next trip. Whether you’re looking for something basic or a model that works with modern technology, hopefully, you’ve found your pick!

Interline Agreements: Baggage Made Easy

Hands Off My Suitcase

  • October 22, 2023
  • Checked Baggage , International Travel

If you’re planning a trip that involves flying with more than one airline, you might wonder how your baggage will be handled.

Will you have to collect your bags and check them in again at each stop? How much will you have to pay for baggage fees? What if your bags get lost or delayed ?

These are some of the questions that travelers often have when they book flights with multiple airlines.

Fortunately, there is a solution that can make your travel experience smoother and easier: interline agreements.

In this post, we’ll explain what interline agreements are, how they affect your baggage, benefits and drawbacks, tips, and more!

How Is an Interline Agreement Different from Other Types of Airline Partnerships?

Fmc / msc and carry on baggage allowances, other airlines, avoid purchasing separate tickets.

  • Interline agreements are basic arrangements between airlines that make it easier for passengers to book and travel on multiple flights on different airlines.
  • Interline agreements allow passengers to check in only once for all the flights on the itinerary, receive all their boarding passes, and have their baggage transferred from the first airline to the second airline without having to collect it and drop it off again.
  • Interline agreements are different from codeshare agreements and joint ventures, which are deeper forms of partnership that involve sharing codes, revenue, scheduling and pricing on routes.
  • Interline agreements are especially useful for travelers when things go wrong, such as flight delays or cancellations, as they allow airlines to rebook passengers on other airlines without extra cost.

What Is an Interline Agreement?

An interline agreement is a basic partnership between two or more airlines that allows passengers to book connecting flights more easily.

Interline agreements simplify several aspects of your multi-airline itinerary, including:

Interline agreements allow airlines to sell tickets that include flights operated by other airlines.

For example, you can buy a ticket from American Airlines that includes a flight from New York to London on British Airways and a flight from London to Paris on Air France.

This way, you only need to make one booking and pay one fare for your entire journey.

Interline agreements also allow airlines to check in passengers and issue boarding passes for flights operated by other airlines.

For example, using the same example as above, you can check in at the American Airlines counter in New York and receive boarding passes for all your flights.

This can save you time and the inconvenience of having to check-in at each connection of your trip.

Baggage Handling

Interline agreements also allow airlines to transfer baggage between flights operated by other airlines.

Using the same example as above, you can check your baggage at the American Airlines counter in New York and it will be automatically transferred to your connecting flights.

You don’t need to collect and re-check your baggage at each stop.

However, interline agreements are still subject to standard customs restrictions.

For example, in the US, passengers must collect their bags and clear customs at their first port of entry, regardless of whether they have an interline agreement or not.

Interline agreements are the most basic form of partnership you will find between airlines.

They do not involve sharing revenue, coordinating schedules, or aligning prices.

They simply make it easier for passengers to book and travel on connecting flights with different airlines.

Interline agreements are not the only way that airlines can cooperate with each other. There are other types of partnerships that involve deeper levels of coordination and integration between airlines.

Here are some of the most common ones:

Codeshare Agreement

A codeshare agreement is a step up from an interline agreement. It allows airlines to place their codes (abbreviations) on each other’s flights and sell them as their own.

This means that travelers can book a flight with one airline but fly on another airline’s plane.

For example, Delta Air Lines flight DL1 from New York to London is also sold as VS4000 by Virgin Atlantic, KL6101 by KLM, and AF8991 by Air France as part of codeshare agreements or joint ventures.

When you book this flight, you can choose which airline’s code you want to use, depending on factors such as price, loyalty program, or seat preference.

A codeshare agreement can also make it easier for travelers to earn frequent flyer miles for the whole trip, as opposed to an interline agreement where miles are only eligible on the flights operated by the original airline.

Joint Venture

A joint venture is the most advanced form of partnership between airlines. It involves sharing revenue and costs on certain routes or markets, as well as coordinating scheduling, pricing, marketing, and service standards.

A joint venture is almost like a merger between airlines, except that they remain separate legal entities.

For example, Delta Air Lines has a joint venture with Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic on transatlantic routes.

This means that these airlines act as one big airline on these routes, offering more flight options, seamless connections, consistent service quality, and reciprocal benefits for frequent flyers.

A joint venture requires regulatory approval from the authorities of the countries involved, as it can affect competition and consumer rights.

How to Find Out Which Airline’s Baggage Allowances and Fees Apply to Your Trip

The easiest way to determine which airline’s baggage policy applies to your trip is to check your e-ticket or confirmation email.

Look for a section labeled “Baggage Information” or “Baggage Allowance” that displays the number of pieces or weight you can check in for each flight.

If your journey doesn’t include a checked baggage allowance, airlines must include the fees for purchasing a first and second checked bag.

You can also visit each airline’s website and enter your booking reference or ticket number to find more details about their baggage policies. Alternatively, you can contact their customer service or reservation center directly.

Now that you know how to find the baggage policy for your upcoming trip, let’s discuss how airlines decide which policy applies to multi-stop trips with interline agreements5.

How Do Airlines Determine Which Baggage Allowances and Fees to Apply?

The answer depends on several factors, such as:

  • The origin and destination of your journey
  • The First Marketing Carrier (FMC) of your itinerary (the airline whose code appears in the flight number of the first flight)
  • The Most Significant Carrier (MSC) of your itinerary (the airline that operates the longest or most significant flight of your itinerary)
  • The specific agreements between the airlines involved in the multi-flight itinerary.

There are different rules for different regions and scenarios, but here are some general guidelines:

Domestic U.S. and Canadian Itineraries

For domestic U.S. and Canadian itineraries, the First Marketing Carrier decides which baggage policy applies for the whole itinerary.

The First Marketing Carrier can choose to:

  • Apply its own baggage policy to the entire itinerary, or
  • Apply the Most Significant Carrier’s baggage policy for the entire itinerary.

If your domestic journey includes a stopover that is longer than 4 hours, you will be required to collect your checked bags from baggage claim at the connection and recheck them with your connecting airline.

You may have to pay baggage fees to recheck your bags.

International Itineraries that Begin or End in the U.S. or Canada

For U.S. international itineraries that begin or end within the U.S. or Canda, the First Marketing Carrier decides which baggage policy applies for the whole itinerary.

If your domestic journey includes a stopover that is longer than 24 hours, you will be required to collect your checked bags from baggage claim at the connection and recheck them with your connecting airline.

International Itineraries that Travel Through the U.S. or Canada

For international journeys via the U.S. or Canada (where the journey begins and ends outside these countries), the Most Significant Carrier’s baggage policy applies for each flight in the itinerary.

Non- U.S. or Canadian International Itineraries

For international itineraries that doesn’t include the U.S. or Canada, the Most Significant Carrier’s baggage policy applies for each flight in the itinerary.

Although, the Most Significant Carrier is the standard most commonly used to determine an interline itinerary (80% of itineraries with interline agreements follow this convention), airlines aren’t bound to follow it.

Airlines are free to make their own agreements between each other, with specific rules and conditions. This applies to interline itineraries that don’t begin or end in the U.S. or Canada only.

The following table summarizes which carrier (airline) decides the baggage policy for a multi-flight itinerary with an interline agreement:

  • FMC = First Marketing Carrier
  • MSC = Most Significant Carrier

It’s important to point out that the baggage rule (FMC or MSC) that is applied to your itinerary has a direct effect on your carry-on baggage allowances for each of your flights:

  • For flights where the FMC rule is applied, all airlines must abide by the FMC’s carry-on baggage allowance,
  • For flights where the MSC rule is applied, each airline applies its own carry-on baggage allowance.

Benefits of Interline Agreements

Interline agreements can make your travel easier, cheaper, and more convenient in several ways:

Here are some of the benefits of interline agreements:

  • You can book your entire itinerary with one airline or travel agent, instead of having to book separate tickets with different airlines.
  • You can save money by paying only one booking fee and one baggage fee for your entire itinerary, instead of paying multiple fees for each airline.
  • You can save time by checking in only once for all your flights and receiving all your boarding passes at once.
  • You don’t have to worry about collecting and re-checking your baggage at each airport, as your bags will be transferred automatically from one airline to another.
  • You have more flexibility in choosing your flights and connections, as you can combine flights from different airlines that may not have codeshare or joint venture agreements.
  • You have more protection in case of delays or cancellations, as the first airline will rebook you for free on another flight operated by any of the interline partners.

Drawbacks of Interline Agreements

Interline agreements have some drawbacks that you should be aware of before you book your flight.

Here are some of the disadvantages of interline agreements:

  • Although the baggage policy will be the same across your itinerary, you may experience different service standards for each airline, such as seat selection, meals, entertainment, etc., which can affect your comfort and satisfaction.
  • You may not be able to earn frequent flyer miles or enjoy other benefits (such as lounge access or priority boarding) for the entire itinerary, as each airline may have different rules and policies for their loyalty programs.
  • You may not have the best flight options in terms of duration or convenience, as interline agreements do not guarantee coordination or synchronization of flight schedules between airlines.
  • Interline itinerary fares can often be more expensive than purchasing separate tickets.
  • If an issue occurs during your journey, such as delayed bags at a connection, it can sometimes be difficult for an airline to take responsibility. You may find that each airline will refer you to the other airline to resolve the issue.

Interline Agreements and Low-Cost Airlines

Interline agreements are rare among low-cost airlines such as:

  • Allegiant Air
  • Southwest Airlines
  • Spirit Airlines

These airlines usually don’t support interlining at all, as they prefer to sell their tickets directly to consumers and avoid paying fees or sharing revenue with other airlines.

If you want to fly with these airlines, you will have to book separate tickets and handle your baggage and check-in yourself.

How to Find Out Your Airline’s Interline Agreements

Unfortunately, most airlines do not publicize their interline agreements with other airlines. They tend to focus more on promoting their codeshare agreements and alliances, as these are more lucrative than interline agreements.

However, an airline’s partners, whether through codeshare or alliance, imply that interline agreements exist between them.

The following tables include links to the airline partner pages for U.S., Canadian, and foreign airlines.

U.S. Airlines

Canadian airlines, how to book flights with interline agreements.

If you want to book a flight with an interline agreement, you have several options:

Online Travel Agencies

Online travel agencies (OTAs) such as Expedia , Orbitz , or Travelocity can display and sell interline itineraries from multiple airlines on their websites or apps.

You can typically identify interline or codeshare flights by the term “operated by.” If a multi-flight itinerary describes a segment as “self-transfer”, this is an itinerary that includes separate tickets. To take advantage of an interline agreement, these itineraries should be avoided.

They can also issue electronic tickets for interline flights and handle any changes or cancellations.

However, OTAs may not show all the possible interline options or the best prices as they depend on the data and inventory provided by the airlines or global distribution systems (GDSs) .

OTAs can be a great tool to research a large number of itineraries at the same time, however I strongly recommend that you make your booking with your airline directly. You may find cheaper prices with OTAs, however their shortcomings become clear if something goes wrong during your journey.

Traditional Travel Agents

Traditional travel agents can also book interline flights for customers using their access to GDSs or direct contracts with airlines.

They can also provide personalized service and advice and handle any issues or problems that may arise.

However, travel agents may charge fees for their services and may not have access to all the interline agreements or fares that are available.

Airlines can also sell interline flights directly to customers through their websites, call centers, or airport counters.

However, airlines may not offer all the interline options or the best prices as they may favor their own flights or partner airlines over others.

Despite this, I would strongly recommend that you ALWAYS book your flights directly with the airline.

What to Do at Check-In

When you check in your baggage for an interline itinerary, you should:

  • Make sure you have your e-ticket or confirmation email with you, as well as your passport and visa (if required).
  • Tell the check-in agent that you have an interline itinerary and confirm which airline’s baggage policy applies to your luggage.
  • Ask the check-in agent to tag your baggage with the final destination airport code and give you the baggage claim tags.
  • Check that your baggage claim tags match your itinerary and keep them with you until you collect your baggage at the destination airport.
  • If you have a short connection or need to clear customs and immigration at the intermediate airport(s), ask the check-in agent if you need to re-check your baggage or if it will be transferred automatically to the next flight.

What to Do If Baggage Is Lost or Damaged on an Interline Itinerary

If you arrive at your final destination airport and your baggage is missing or damaged, you should report it immediately to the baggage service office of the airline that operated the last flight of your itinerary.

For example, if you fly from New York to London on American Airlines, and then from London to Paris on British Airways, you should report your baggage issue to British Airways at the Paris airport.

The airline that operated the last flight of your itinerary is responsible for handling your baggage claim and compensating you for any loss or damage, according to their own policies and the applicable laws and regulations .

However, they may also contact the other airlines involved in your itinerary to investigate the cause and location of the problem.

Therefore, it’s Important to provide as much information as possible about your baggage and your itinerary, such as:

  • Baggage tag numbers,
  • Flight numbers,
  • Dates and times of travel,
  • Description and value of your baggage contents.

Tips for Interline Agreement Itineraries

If you’re planning to book an interline itinerary, here are some tips to make your trip smoother:

Compare Prices and Options

You may find different fares and availability for the same interline itinerary depending on which airline you book with.

Compare prices and options from different airlines or online travel agencies before you book.

Check the Baggage Rules and Fees

Check which airline’s baggage rules and fees apply to your whole trip based on the MSC concept .

Make sure you comply with the weight and size limits and pay any applicable fees in advance to avoid surprises at the airport.

Check the Cancellation and Change Fees

Check which airline’s cancellation and change fees apply to your whole trip based on the FMC concept .

Be aware of the terms and conditions of your ticket and how much it will cost you to change or cancel your booking.

Confirm Your Flights and Seats

Confirm your flights and seats with each airline involved in your itinerary before you travel.

You may be able to select or change your seats online or by calling the airline.

You may also be able to check in online for some or all of your flights.

Allow Enough Time for Connections

Allow enough time for connections between different airlines, especially if you have to change terminals or go through security or customs again.

Hot Tip: If you’re connecting at an airport that you’ve never transited through before, check YouTube to see if there’s a walkthrough video of the airport available. Chicago O’Hare Airport Walkthrough ORD Terminal 2-5

Keep Your Documents Handy

Keep your documents handy, such as your passport, visa, boarding passes, confirmation numbers, and contact details of each airline.

Although you’ve checked in for all your flights and have received your boarding passes, you may need to show them at different points of your journey.

Always Book Your Flights Directly with Your Airline

Booking directly with your airline offers you more flexibility and protection when things go wrong.

If you made your booking with a third-party travel agent, the airline may direct you to them to resolve your issue.

Sometimes, it can be cheaper to purchase two separate tickets instead of buying them as one booking.

However, this saving does come with some drawbacks – the most significant being that your flights will probably not have an interline agreement between them.

Some airlines can still check your bags through to your final destination, depending on the airlines involved, but this is becoming increasingly rare. Often, it’s at the discretion of the airline agent at the check-in counter.

For example, British Airways doesn’t check through baggage on itineraries with separate tickets, even if both of the flights are operated by British Airways!

Final Thoughts

Interline agreements can make traveling on multiple airlines easier and less stressful for passengers, but they also require some research and planning ahead.

However, I think it’s well worth the effort. As someone who always checks a bag when traveling, not having to worry about collecting your luggage at each connection, is a welcome perk.

Remember to always check your airlines’ websites or contact their customer service for the latest information on baggage allowances and policies.

What are interline agreements in airlines.

Interline agreements allow passengers to book connecting flights with less hassle.

Here at Simple Flying, we often write about new agreements between airlines. From codeshares to joint ventures to interline deals there are several kinds of partnerships available. But what exactly is interlining, and how does it differ from other partnerships?

What is an interline agreement?

When two airlines enter into an interline agreement, it is the most basic form of partnership you will find. In essence, it allows passengers to book through itineraries on two (or more) airlines with less hassle than booking each one separately.

Usually, if two airlines are interlining, they will handle the check-in and baggage for each other’s passengers. That means travelers only have to check in once for all the flights on the itinerary, receive all their boarding passes, and their baggage will be transferred from the first airline to the second airline without having to collect it and drop it off again.

For the airlines involved, interline deals can attract more passengers by providing easy connectivity to destinations not served by the original airline. Moreover, it can help foreign airlines reach more domestic destinations, with airlines like Emirates signing multiple interline agreements with local carriers to maximize bookings.

The downside of an interline agreement is that passengers can’t collect frequent flyer miles for the whole trip. On an Emirates booking, for example, Skyward miles would only be eligible on the EK-carrying flights. There can also be variances in things like luggage allowances for carry-on and checked bags, and there is no coordination on flight timings, so it’s not always the most efficient choice by duration.

Going beyond: Codeshares

Deeper partnerships see two carriers invest more in coordinating their operations. A codeshare is viewed as the next step up from interlining and sees airlines working together by placing their ‘codes’ on each other’s flights.

This explains why you might see several flight numbers at a boarding gate. For example, Delta Air Lines flight DL1 from New York JFK to London Heathrow is also sold as VS4000, KL6101, and AF8991 as part of codeshares or joint ventures with Virgin Atlantic , KLM , and Air France .

Full coordination: joint-venture

The next step forward is a joint venture. When airlines enter into a joint venture, they pretty much become one big airline, cooperating on everything from scheduling to pricing on routes, and sharing the revenue between them too. Details of how this type of agreement works is down to the airlines involved.

Joint ventures signify such close cooperation that they are almost as good as a merger and hence need regulatory approval as well. The main difference is that they usually operate in separate geographic areas.

For example, Delta and Virgin Atlantic have had a joint venture in place for some time, which allows for a massive transatlantic presence as well as an extensive network in Europe and America. Air France-KLM later also this partnership, further solidifying the participants’ firm footing in the transatlantic market.

For passengers, joint ventures mean traveling on any of the constituent airlines is as good as the others in theory. Miles, elite status, baggage allowances, and everything in between will be coordinated to ensure a smooth experience.

Elektrostal is a fairly large industrial city, which is located near the Vokhonka River and almost 40-50 km from the eastern part of Moscow. There are a lot of powerful factories here, where many residents of Elektrostal work. They are perfectly combined with the most beautiful green boulevards, streets and parks, bright lawns and flower beds that adorn almost the entire town. It is picturesque due to amazing reservoirs and forests. It is worth learning more about the main attractions of Elektrostal, photos of which are in the article.

The city was founded in 1916 thanks to the construction of a metallurgical plant. Previously, this place was the natural boundary of Calm. To start construction, the labor of local peasants was used. In the middle of 1925 herebuilt the first railway line that connected Elektrostal with Moscow. After the onset of 1938, the village turned into a separate city.

It is noteworthy that during the Great Patriotic War, the Electrostal plants produced ammunition that was needed for victory. In particular, it is worth noting the production of the legendary Katyushas.

A new stage for the factories of the city began after the invention of atomic weapons. The local plant was on the list of the main production facilities of the nuclear industry. This led to the fact that in 1954 the production of fuel was launched, which was used for the operation of nuclear power plants.

In 1963, the cultural center "October" was built, and this was done by the masters of the Novo-Kramatorsky plant, named after Stalin. It featured a spacious auditorium that could seat more than 850 people, as well as a unique revolving stage for actors to change scenery in seconds.

At different times, eminent creative groups performed in this cultural center, as well as the Beryozka ensemble, famous at that time. It is noteworthy that even in our time the cultural center is actively functioning, and the square in front of it is considered the most beautiful place in Elektrostal with fountains operating in the summer. In mid-2013, it received the status of a city of labor and military glory.

There are many numerous monuments in the city that tell about the history of this amazing place: a monument to Nikolai Vtorov -the founder of the famous plant "Elektrostal" near the House of Culture, a monument to Tevosyan - the chief engineer, monuments to M. Gorky and K. Marx, a sculpture "Steelworker", a monument to Korneev - Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as a memorial and a monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan and on North Caucasus.

This is a fairly large and old factory in the city that specializes in the production of fuel for local gas stations. The plant is part of the structure of the company FC "TVEL" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The General Director of the enterprise is O. L. Sedelnikov.

This plant produces nuclear fuel, which is used by many nuclear power plants, transport power plants and research reactors, not only in Russia, but also in other European countries. The company has quality certificates OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.

The museum of the plant presents its history, shows old photographs of the streets of the city, there are achievements of workers, as well as photos of significant people, there are many of the most interesting models produced at the machine-building plant. It also stores presentations showing the principles of the enterprise.

This temple - a landmark of Elektrostal - is a single-dome centric church, which is made in the style of Byzantine times. It was erected in the 20th century, in the immediate vicinity of St. Andrew's Church. The temple was designed by T. V. Trubnikov and V. A. Drozdov, according to the developments of which the iconostasis and interior were exactly designed.

The church plays the role of a baptismal church and belongs to the Moscow diocese. The main shrines of the church are the most ancient and valuable icons of Nikandor Gorodnoyezersky and the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In addition, particles of the relics of saints are kept here. Divine services are held in the temple only during religious holidays.

The local park - a landmark of Elektrostal is an ideal place where everyone can stay alone with nature, ride numerous attractions, and also spend time playing slot machines. The park is especially popular in the summer - it is full of families, youth companies and couples in love.

Especially for the summer in 2013, the park was re-planned, which made it possible to accommodate more modern entertainment and interesting playgrounds for young visitors. Swimmers will love the dragon and swans, and trampolines have been installed for more active children.

It is noteworthy that the prices in the local park are quite affordable: the cost of a ticket for various attractions ranges from 30-100 rubles. Today it is called "Wonder Park", and it is divided into a quieter "Quiet Alley" and "Entertainment Alley", where there is an inexpensive cafe, a summer stage, and also quite a lot ofattractions.

This cinema is very popular, so it can be called a landmark of Elektrostal. It is located in the shopping center "Elgrad" and consists of 5 spacious halls that can accommodate more than 800 people. To show 2D and 3D films, only modern equipment is used: Dolby Digital Surround EX and MasterImage acoustics, as well as huge screens with a special coating. In all cinema halls, very comfortable conditions for visitors were created: climate control and soft chairs.

In the foyer of the Cinema Gallery there is a play area, a fairly spacious cafe, fast food establishments (Suneki, Tashir-pizza, Rostiks, Kebab-tun, etc.) and popcorn- bar. This is an attractive local leisure center, where the residents of Elektrostal are shown all the latest cinema.

This is a whole complex where you can spend your free time pleasantly and profitably. In addition to the playgrounds, which are fully equipped for playing laser tag and paintball, guests are invited to visit a local cafe where delicious home-cooked dishes are prepared, a banquet menu, karaoke, as well as a relaxing sauna with a warm font.

What do tourists who have visited the city say? It is not tourist, but industrial. Attractions are quite specific, but overall interesting. Tourists were pleased with low prices.

Looking at the photo of the sights of the city of Elektrostal, you may want to go there and spendunforgettable weekend.

Around the world in 20 days: Messi could travel the globe for Inter Miami preseason

travel tag inter

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami’s worldwide preseason tour will likely leave the sport’s best player and his teammates jet-lagged before the 2024 Major League Soccer season.

Inter Miami began its preseason with a Thursday flight for a match Friday night in El Salvador, beginning an eight-leg, six-city trip in North America and Asia that will span three weeks .

Inter Miami will fly round trip to El Salvador, round trip to Dallas, then to Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and Tokyo before returning home to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

In all, Inter Miami will travel 25,165.54 miles during their preseason quest, the club shared with USA TODAY Sports. That's enough distance to circle the planet once.

Schedule Where will Lionel Messi play in 2024?

“We’re proud to embark on this journey that no other team in league history has experienced, and look forward to captivating our worldwide fan base with our 2024 preseason tour,” Inter Miami chief business officer Xavier Asensi said in a statement after the preseason tour was finalized.

“We’re thrilled to continue putting ourselves in positions to make history.”

Why is Inter Miami’s preseason tour so important?

As Inter Miami capitalizes on Messi’s presence to reach a global audience, MLS is also depending on the world’s best soccer player and his club to promote the league domestically and abroad.

Messi has captivated a worldwide audience throughout his career, including his crowning achievement, leading Argentina in the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

And his decision to join Inter Miami has created “an avalanche” of exposure for MLS and streaming partner Apple, MLS executive vice president of media Seth Bacon told USA TODAY Sports.

Apple TV will broadcast five of the seven Inter Miami preseason games this season and regular season games will broadcast again on Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass.

“Messi joined and it just exploded. So, the tailwind that we have right now, and the growth trajectory of this league is unlike anything in sports right now, anywhere in the world,” Bacon said. “And we are super bullish on the growth possibility and the growth potential that we have as a league to grow our fan base and reach new fans.”

The best way for Messi and Inter Miami to deliver is on the pitch, where they will be considered favorites to win in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Leagues Cup, U.S. Open Cup and MLS cup this year.

And a worldwide tour is sure to bring attention to Inter Miami for the upcoming MLS season.

“The best word that we players have to keep in mind is to dream,” Suarez said. “In this case, dreaming is wanting to win, and why not dream of winning all four titles?”

How many miles will Inter Miami travel during the preseason?

The Earth’s circumference, measured either along the equator or the poles, comes in just shy of 25,000 miles, according to NASA . And Inter Miami will travel slightly more than that mark.

∎ Inter Miami will travel to San Salvador, El Salvador for Friday’s match against the El Salvador national team: 1,001.81 miles each way, or 2,003.62 miles round trip.

∎ Inter Miami will travel to face FC Dallas on Jan. 22 at Cotton Bowl Stadium: 1,110.32 miles each way, or 2,220.64 miles round trip (4,224.26 total).

Two matches in one week are a piece of cake compared to Inter Miami’s tour in Asia.

∎ Inter Miami will travel to Saudi Arabia – 7,369.17 miles (11,593.43 total) – for two matches in the Riyadh Season Cup. The first is on Jan. 29, and the second is a match between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on Feb. 1.

∎ Inter Miami will depart Saudi Arabia for a friendly in Hong Kong on Feb. 4: 4,326.94 miles (15,920.37 total).

∎ Inter Miami will fly from Hong Kong to Tokyo for a Feb. 7 match: 1,789.22 miles (17,709.59 total).

∎ Inter Miami will fly home from Tokyo: 7,455.95 miles, in all logging 25,165.64 total miles.

“The games in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and Japan were planned from the end of last season, and we will be ready for those,” Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said. “The question is how we manage the first two games against El Salvador and Dallas because those are so soon. We will have to made decisions about how many minutes certain players can play in those games.”

It will all be a balancing act for Inter Miami , which has a 16-day stretch to recuperate after their preseason tour before their next road trip.

But they will be back in action on Feb. 15, hosting Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys – the hometown team of both Messi and Martino – to end the preseason.

Inter Miami has two games in the opening week of the MLS season, beginning Feb. 21 at home against Real Salt Lake and on the road against the LA Galaxy on Feb. 25.

“It’s looking at the balance of the sporting side and the growth of this club and the revenues that benefit the business side,” said Sergio Busquets, one of four former FC Barcelona members with Messi, Suarez and Jordi Alba, forming Inter Miami’s super team.

“We will also compete against great teams that will prepare us to be at a high level. When it comes to time changes and long trips, we have to be prepared and physically fit, and that will help us during the season.”

Buried treasure: The splendor of the Moscow Metro system

Owen hatherley the calvert journal january 29, 2013.

. Reposted from  The Calvert Journal , a daily briefing on the culture and creativity of modern Russia.

. Post-Communist underground stations in Moscow, like the recently completed Pyatnitskoye shosse, are still, very visibly, Moscow Metro stations. Regardless of the need or otherwise for nuclear shelters, they’re still buried deep in the ground; ubiquitous still is the expensive, laborious, but highly legible and architecturally breathtaking practice of providing high-ceilinged vaults with the trains leaving from either side. There have been attempts at “normal” metro lines, like the sober stations built under Khrushchev, or the “Light Metro” finished in 2003, but they didn’t catch on. Largely, the model developed in the mid-1930s continues, and not just in Moscow — extensions in Kiev or St Petersburg, or altogether new systems in Kazan or Almaty, carry on this peculiar tradition. Metro stations are still being treated as palaces of the people, over two decades after the “people’s” states collapsed. This could be a question of maintaining quality control, but then quality is not conspicuous in the Russian built environment. So why does this endure?

travel tag inter

. The original, 1930s Moscow Metro was the place where even the most skeptical fellow travellers threw away their doubts and surrendered. Bertolt Brecht wrote an awe-filled poem on the subject, “The Moscow Workers Take Possession of the Great Metro on April 27, 1935,” dropping his habitual irony and dialectic to describe the Metro workers perusing the system they’d built on the day of its opening. At the end, the poet gasps, his guard down, “This is the grand picture that once upon a time/ rocked the writers who foresaw it” — that is, that here, at least, a dream of “Communism” had been palpably built. It was not an uncommon reaction, then or now, nostalgia notwithstanding. The first stations, those Brecht was talking about, were not particularly over-ornamented, especially by the standards of what came later, but their extreme opulence and spaciousness was still overwhelming. Stations like Sokolniki or Kropotkinskaya didn’t bludgeon with classical reminisces and mosaics. Yet three things about the underground designs created by architects Alexei Dushkin, Ivan Fomin, Dmitry Chechulin et al were unprecedented in any previous public transport network, whether Charles Holden’s London, Alfred Grenander’s Berlin or Hector Guimard’s Paris. First, the huge size of the halls, their high ceilings and widely-spaced columns; second, the quality of the materials, with various coloured marbles shipped in from all over the USSR; and third, the lighting, emerging from individually-designed, surreal chandeliers, often murkily atmospheric, designed to create mood rather than light.
