Not really an insurance company

Not really an insurance company. They do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that they say they do and you can file claim after claim and upload files that prove your claims and they do nothing. I am sure if it's a little fluffy claim, they may help, but beyond that, DO NOT THINK YOU ARE COVERED FOR AN ACCIDENT, MEDICAL NEEDS or just plain HELP!

We planned a trip to watch our college…

We planned a trip to watch our college son compete. He had an injury that kept him from traveling so we had to cancel as well. We had not trouble getting approved for a refund. We did have to provide medical proof from his athletic trainer but we would expect that. No problems and we are happy with the results.

Thank you for your feedback, KTB! It's wonderful to hear we were able to meet your expectations and assist with your claim!

Got full refund

Got full refund, but did take a little longer than expected.

We value your feedback, William. We strive to process claims within 30 days from the time they are received. We are happy to hear that we were able to assist and pay your claim!

What a load of rubbish.

I have been updating my original post as to my claim that has been dragging on now for over a year. My last contact with TripMate was on the 17/04/2024, since then silence. Will notify you when the cheque will be mailed out to me. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Yet more hot air from their customer service. This is one really bad company. DONT USE THEM…..

We had to cancel our cruise

We had to cancel our cruise due to a medical emergency. The cruise line assessed a 100% penalty. Thankfully, we had selected TripMate travel insurance at the time of purchase. We submitted the claim form with extensive documentation for the medical situation, the cruise line's cancellation notice, and the flight itinerary. We received a refund within a month of filing the claim.

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us, Dietmar. We're sorry to hear you had to cancel your cruise. We take the claims process very seriously and are pleased to hear that your claim was resolved.

DON’T USE THEM!!!

DON’T USE THEM!!!! I filed a claim in October die to my sister was sick. Now she has passed and I still haven’t received my refund. Viking is such a wonderful company for travel. I can’t believe that they would refer them as the recommended travel insurance company . Moral of the story, get your own insurance. Don’t use travel mate! I may have to get a lawyer to get my refund back.

Paid our claim within days

My daughter became sick and couldn't travel. The whole claim process was easy, and I was able to complete the claim form and submit it with supporting documentation via email. I was expecting to wait weeks if not months for our refund, so I was surprised to see they approved the claim almost immediately. A few days later our refund showed up in my email as a digital check. I'm so glad I purchased this insurance or we would have been out almost $2000.

Thanks for your experience! We greatly appreciate it, Mary. We're sorry to hear about your Trip Cancellation, but happy we were able to assist and pay your claim!

I wish I could give 0 stars

I wish I could give 0 stars. I'm literally about to cry. Trip mate did pay for our trip that we had to miss due to my daughter's illness. However, once I received the check and deposited into my bank, their bank refused payment. Now I have a rather large negative balance in my account and I have been given the run around all day. I have pending payments that are going to be returned and will have to pay fees on payments that have already gone through. Plus, if they just send me another check, my bank said it could take up to 10 days for me to have access to it (since obviously their checks are bad). I'm so frustrated right now. Do not use this company!!!

These guys are just scammers and need…

These guys are just scammers and need to be sued along with all the platforms that advertise this company. They will just send automated emails demanding all kinds of Bull information. And once you provide it over a few months they will send an auto response of denial. They are just stealing money from customers and they are getting away with it!

surprisingly easy

We were surprised on how easy the process was. Our flight was canceled and we weren't able to leave until the next day. They reimbursed the hotel night at the airport and the lost day at the resort. Filled out the claim, included all the documentation requested, and quickly received a refund.

Hello Angela, and thanks for sharing your positive experience with us! We're sorry to hear about your travel woes, but happy we were able to meet your expectations.

AFTER EXPLAINING EXPERIENCE ON Trustpilot, TripMate PAID UP!

DO NOT BUY TRIP MATE. We have purchased TRIP MATE insurance for 4 separate Viking cruises. After submitting and resubmitting all of our loss documentation for completely missing our Bergen, Norway extension, our claim was denied. Our travel buddies were reimbursed, as we had identical arrangements. With our travel buddies permission, we gave their claim numbers to TRIP MATE and asked why they were reimbursed and we were not. How did TRIP MATE handle this? They sent us another denial and said it was an error that our travel buddies were paid. 8 months after the trip they requested our friends RETURN the funds they were paid! This experience and Viking claiming no responsibility has soured us on using either company again. We also purchased Viking Air Plus for smooth, seamless travel. Very disappointing.

DO NOt BUY THIS TRAVEL INSURANCE!

In October 2023 we went on a Viking Cruise and purchased Trip Mate Ins. I fell on loose cobblestones in Germany and had to get 3 stitches in my head. The doctor ordered 3 days bedrest, so we missed three days of the cruise and excursions. We filled the extensive claim in November with all the required forms and receipts. Over the course of five months continually emailed asking us for for various forms and receipts that we sent in with the original claim. For trip interruption they owed us $3,100, they just sent us a e-check for $318.00. I would give them a zero rating if I could. Do not buy this insurance.

Delivered what was expected

Delivered what was expected. Our Frontier flight was cancelled, so we paid out of pocket for an extra nights stay while on vacation. Needed to provide a lot of documentation (room expense, proof of flight cancellation, etc). Entire process took about a month. Overall, I’m very pleased.

Viking and TripMate made the claim a good experience

We purchased a Viking river cruise in France in June 2023 for sail in March-April of 2024. As a part of that package we purchased TripMate insurance that would allow us to cancel for any reason up to the day of travel. I was laid off in January 2024, and needed to cancel the trip to recoup those funds. TripMate processed the claim promptly and full refunded our trip. Viking helped get the process started by providing good guidance, and they were accurate in their description of the end-to-end experience.

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us, William. We're sorry to hear about the circumstances surrounding your Trip Cancellation, but happy we were able to assist and pay your claim!

Illness prevented going on the trip

My daughter became really ill right before her trip and was unable to attend. Tripmate was very helpful and the process was easy. I received 85% of my money back and was satisfied with the outcome. I will purchase this trip insurance again in the future.

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us, Lori. We're sorry to hear about the circumstances surrounding your claim, but happy we were able to assist and pay your claim! We appreciate your endorsement.

Our flight thru Frontier got canceled…

Our flight thru Frontier got canceled while on vacation. The process was a little lengthy but we got 100% reimbursed for our new flights, the cabs we wound up taking, and the hotel that we wound up having to rent as well. So thankful we purchased the travel protection or we would have been out quite a bit of money. You do have to really pay attention when doing the claim. Somehow I missed the section for flight reimbursement and wound up filing a 2nd claim. When I called to figure out what I did, they were very helpful!

We had to cancel our trip due to an immediate family member being diagnosed with cancer.

We had to cancel our trip due to a family member being diagnosed with cancer. I was surprised at the claim forms request for medical documentation. We submitted the Dr’s report with the five page forms and were reimbursed for our trip. I really appreciated the way I was able to track our claim on line and receiving updates via email and text messages.

Date of experience : March 02, 2024

We are sorry to hear about the circumstances surrounding your Trip Cancellation. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We strive to exceed customer expectations. We are pleased your claim was resolved to your satisfaction.

No Reimbursement for Covered Expenses

My husband had an accident in Prague. Trip Mate claimed they'd pay for everything since Medicare does not pay medical expenses outside of the USA. Trip Mate did pay for some of his medical expenses, but anything--hospital deposit, ambulance, initial doctor expenses, my hotel room while he was hospitalized--I paid with my credit card, Those expenses were never reimbursed me. I filed the claim documents, including support documentation, 4 times. Even though initially, I mailed it in, they claimed they could not read it. So, I sent them electronic copies. Twice when I checked on the claim status, it showed the claim was closed for lack of information. Each time I called, they claimed they would open up the claim again. It's been almost a year since his accident, and I'm giving up trying to get reimbursed. So, beware, if you pay any medical expenses with your credit card, it's doubtful you'll be reimbursed.

Date of experience : April 13, 2023

Hello Inge-Lise. We're sorry to hear about the circumstances surrounding your claim and apologize for not meeting your expectations. We take customer service and the claims review process very seriously, and one of our dedicated claims team members has investigated your claim further and contacted you with the status of your claim. We strive to provide a fair, equitable and timely claims process for all customers but some cases can take longer to resolve and supporting documentation is typically required in order for the policy to provide coverage for cancellations due to medical reasons. If you have any further questions, please contact us at 833.297.2255 or [email protected].

I filed a claim with Tripmate

I filed a claim with Tripmate, because my luggage was broken into and my Louis Vuitton sunglasses were stolen. Trip mate denied the claim because they said sunglasses were not covered! I mean really?? could you believe sunglasses contact lenses prescription glasses are excluded from coverage! This coverage stinks you pay a lot of money, and it stinks!! I do not recommend purchasing this coverage look elsewhere !!

Trip Mate Insurance - HORRIBLE

By Sailman55 , July 18, 2023 in Cruise/Travel Insurance

Cool Cruiser

My wife and I have taken two Viking European River cruises and Viking appears to be associated with Trip Mate insurance since it's an option when booking their cruises.  We trust Viking so we purchased Trip Mate Insurance for our March 2023 river cruise to Paris/Zurich.  Unfortunately, American Airlines diverted our flight from Seattle to Paris so we ended up in New York due to a non-functioning communication equipment required for Atlantic Ocean flights.  In May we submitted a claim for one night's lost hotel in Paris and after MANY back-and-forth requests for MORE information our claim is still not resolved.  Trip Mate is a HORRIBLE company and if you buy one of their policies then be prepared to say goodbye to your money and forget about submitting a loss claim - they are so full of red tape that you'll just get frustrated and give up, or they will deny your claim. If you don't believe me then read the various reviews of Trip Mate in the internet. It takes a long time to earn a good reputation and Viking has done that. However, it takes little time to lose that reputation and being associated with Trip Mate is a one-way ticket to one star reviews.

Have your eyes wide open if you choose to select a travel insurance company - you don't have to choose Trip Mate.

Sorry that has happened to you.

This appears to be your first post, but you've been a CC member for quite a few years.

I have no idea if you have been *reading* here on CC, but there have been many posts about not getting travel insurance through the travel vendor such as a cruise line.

And there are many recommendations to deal with a travel insurance broker.  They can help you find policies that best fit your own specific needs *and* they can help with claims should that be needed.

For future travel... we are among those who have used www.TripInsuranceStore.com (no extra charge for using them).

And we've had quite a few claims (with Travel Insured) and all have been paid promptly, without any drama.

Meanwhile, about your current claim, insurance is a regulated industry, so you could try contacting the Insurance Commissioner's Office in your state.  Sometimes that, uh, "helps" the insurer to pay, if the claim was for a covered situation.

There are others here from Washington, so they may chime in with other suggestions.

Thanks

As a fellow Washingtonian, I feel your frustration. I agree that sometimes insurance companies do try to wear you down and hope you go away.

I have had some luck by reaching out to the Washington State Insurance Commission for assistance.

Maybe give them an opportunity to help. Here's a link.

File a complaint or check your complaint status | Washington state Office of the Insurance Commissioner

GeezerCouple and klfrodo - thank you both for your feedback.  I appreciate it.

TripMate is just the plan administrator for Viking as it is with several other cruise lines. Viking insurance is divided into two parts with Viking providing the travel benefits  and Generali insuring the medical coverage. So your problem is with Viking and TripMate not an insurance company.

The worst part about Viking’s policy is that the cancellation provision often reimburses in vouchers because people choose to apply all funds including insurance to another booking. What they do not realize is that those vouchers have no cash value and are not recognized as a form of payment by the Viking policy. So, yes, they can move it all; but the subsequent cruise is not covered for cancellation or interruption.

Correction: Viking provides the Cancel For Any Reason coverage. Generali provides coverage for other travel related expenses with the disclaimer that it applies only to arrangements booked through the company from which you purchased coverage.

5 minutes ago, Babr said: Correction: Viking provides the Cancel For Any Reason coverage. Generali provides coverage for other travel related expenses with the disclaimer that it applies only to arrangements booked through the company from which you purchased coverage .

[emphasis added]

Sailman55 :

Babr brings up an important point that you may not have considered when making decisions about "where/from whom" to purchase travel insurance.

Third-party insurance, from an insurer totally independent of any travel vendor, is likely to offer much better coverage in another way:  That policy is likely to cover you from the moment you walk out the door (even before you get in your ride to the airport) until you walk back in your door at the end of your trip.

If you are making other stops before or after your cruise, the "cruise-linked travel insurance" may not cover that if all of the arrangements are done separate from the cruise line.  It will cover air travel that you arranged on your own, by cash or awards.

And of course, any covered medical expenses themselves.

Speak with a travel insurance broker to determine whether some special issues may or may not apply to you, and then pick the policy that fits best.

Concerns might include:  illness among non-traveling family members; problems/expenses in other cities before/after the cruise; transportation to the airport... the list goes on.

And speaking with a broker can make a huge difference in how well you understand what IS or is NOT "covered".  Many "complaints" about travel insurance not paying are in fact because the "event" wasn't actually covered in the first place.  Sometimes that's obvious, but sometimes not.

Especially:  "pre-existing condition" has a very specific meaning for each policy, and it can be very different from our everyday usage.  That can make a huge difference (for better or for worse - but one should understand so the coverage "works" for you, etc. - or know that what it does *not* include).

So you want a broker you *speak* with, to discuss concerns and listen to any issues they may suggest.  Don't just rely upon online policy summaries.  If there is any place where "the fine print" matters... it's insurance!

(Online summaries may be fine as background information, so you get a sense of "what's available", but then speak with a broker or agent.)

And when in doubt, you can always call the broker, who will probably have a fast way to contact the insurer IF there is a problem or some uncertainty.

jclinard

I always urge people to only take recommendations for insurance from people who have attempted to make a claim.  Lots of people seem to pooh-pooh that, insisting they have a good company because they deposited the premiums promptly.

My guess is that they know it's a valid claim, so they are going through this dance to try to wear you out and abandon it.  It's funny how valid claims go through that, where denials are issued without any delays at all.

Hi sailman55,

I know you're frustrated with TripMate's coverage, but TripMate is the administrator of the plan and they handle the claims, too. However, TripMate didn't design Viking's plan.

Here's a very basic explanation of how this works:

Viking contracts with TripMate (or any other administrator) to provide a Trip Cancellation plan. The plan design has multiple choices for the coverage benefit levels. The plan itself also has filed and approved policy wording with the States they do business in. Viking works with TripMate on the plan design.

I hope this helps you.
