The best restaurant in Greenville isn’t on the city’s walkable Main Street. It’s not in walking distance of anything. Take the highway north from town, pass Lowe’s on the right, and turn up the dirt driveway just after the Speedway gas station. Although Oak Hill Café has quietly garnered serious acclaim—it was a 2020 James Beard Best New Restaurant Semi-Finalist (that’s in the entire country )—its determined but low-key approach speaks to what’s been happening all over Greenville.

Here is a restaurant in a humble house, with blackberry bushes from the onsite 1.5-acre farm edging the parking lot. Oak Hill’s version of hyper-local requires about 50 steps from harvest to plate, with an array of dehydrators, fermenters, and pressure cookers in between, extracting every molecule of flavor while embodying a no-waste ethos. The kitchen’s “deviled egg” is deconstructed into emulsified pellets of Worcestershire sauce, crème fraîche, honey Dijon, and roe, spooned over blended egg and spread across toast. It’s divine.

But Greenville is growing so quickly that Oak Hill still feels like it flies under the radar. It hides in plain sight, not unlike the cascading waterfall on the Reedy River that sat underneath a highway for 35 years—now the centerpiece of downtown’s Falls Park—or the blighted railroad tracks that were transformed into the lauded Swamp Rabbit Trail.

In Greenville, growth is contagious. Another public space currently in development, the 60-acre Unity Park, is already bringing creative eateries and new small businesses to once-derelict warehouses at the Commons . Just across the river, the massive brick factories that fueled this textile boomtown are steadily transforming from neglected, hulking shells into luxury lofts with fascinating back stories.

Local historian John Nolan’s Greenville History Tours reveal the city’s early 20th-century manufacturing heyday, including a “Textile Crescent” tour of the mill villages where baseball legend “Shoeless” Joe Jackson got his start. These re-emerging towns-within-a-city are fueling a second phase of rebirth that builds on the buzz Greenville first generated a decade ago with the revitalization of Main Street. The rumble of constant construction means that the city’s list of “must try” places warrants a monthly update. In this moment, Greenville is a city in full bloom.

Where to stay in Greenville

Downtown Greenville adds a major new hotel nearly every year.

Marriott SpringHill Suites

Book now: from $146/night, marriott.com

In 2019, Marriott opened its combination Residence Inn and SpringHill Suites , featuring generously sized rooms, full kitchens, and a tree-themed modern aesthetic. Swinging chairs hang from the ceiling in the airy lobby, and richly colored, three-dimensional wood artwork fills common spaces. A courtyard pool and grill area temper steamy summer afternoons, and it’s one block from bustling Main Street. Rates are half of what you’d expect in a bigger city (Charleston, for example) for this level of luxury. Bonus: You’re just around the corner from downtown’s best spot for a nightcap, the dimly lit but intoxicatingly inviting Swordfish Cocktail Club .

Westin Poinsett

Book now: from $199/night, expedia.com

Set directly on Court Square, the city center, the Westin Poinsett combines history with AAA Four Diamond luxury. An ornate lobby and gilded ceilings suggest stepping a century back in time. Jesse Jackson was a porter here in the 1950s, and nods to the building’s Roaring 20s origins abound, like a stall in the lobby’s public bathroom built into the hotel’s original safe.

More new openings in 2021

Several more major hotels are expected to open in 2021, including the highly anticipated Grand Bohemian , with sweeping views over the waterfall.

Things to do in Greenville

Greenville’s recent history is defined by a series of game-changing public access initiatives, beginning with the formation of Falls Park on the Reedy , a 32-acre park in the heart of downtown. The signature waterfall is best viewed from the pedestrian-only Liberty Bridge, a single-cable suspended path that extends 345 feet as it curves around the waterfall below.

Public space extends north and south along the Swamp Rabbit Trail , a grand slam of smart urban planning that parallels the Reedy River as it rambles for 22 miles over converted railway. The path moves south to the freshwater marsh at Lake Conestee Nature Preserve and north to Travelers Rest, a bedroom community where eateries like Upcountry Provisions and Monkey Wrench Smokehouse make a worthy destination for a long afternoon bike ride. Two miles north of downtown, the Swamp Rabbit Cafe and Grocery marks an appealing waypoint with its park-like outdoor seating, sandwiches on house-baked bread, and a bicyclist ethos. Welcome to Asheville, 25 years ago.

On McBee Street downtown, Reedy Rides rents seven-speed cruisers (plus pull-behind wagons for kids) to explore the trail. Book early for weekend rentals—the scenic ride along the Reedy is a popular diversion.

Minutes from downtown, Paris Mountain State Park rises from the piedmont, inviting hikers and runners to tackle its terrain. But not all of Greenville’s attractions are natural. Another new-ish diversion, Topgolf Greenville , features three tiers of hitting bays and a relaxed happy hour vibe. Topgolf turns a driving range into a bowling alley atmosphere, with beginner-friendly competition, regional craft beers, speedy service, and a surprisingly good chicken taco.

Nearby, Greenville’s most distinctive—and face-melting—attraction sits across the street from BMW’s largest manufacturing plant in the world. The BMW Performance Center puts you behind the wheel of the company’s fastest cars, including the M8 Coupe, which can reach 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds. There’s no faster way to go from groggy eyed to peak adrenaline than a professional racecar driver commanding you to “Floor it!” as you shift from full acceleration to slamming on the brakes to drift and squeal around a turn. Just remember when you get back in your own (or rental) car that you don’t have ceramic brakes. BMW’s facility also includes an off-road course, where you’ll navigate its X5 “Sports Activity Vehicle” through a river and teeter on two wheels as you climb and descend the craggy obstacles.

Before you get to Greenville, make a reservation at Husk BBQ.

Where to eat and drink in Greenville

Greenville fully embraces the trend of repurposing historic buildings into mixed-use developments. Beer/café/food truck/yoga studio combos, built into former brick warehouses and textile mills, abound on downtown’s perimeter. The hippest of these hangouts is Hampton Station, where Birds Fly South brewery shares a building with White Duck Taco Shop, across a central picnic-tabled courtyard fronted by Due South coffee roasters, an axe-throwing joint , a dog hotel, and a meadery .

At Markley Station, the trio of dining tenants includes Urban Wren , a wine shop and eclectic kitchen with a swanky industrial motif. And Greenville isn’t without a true food hall: Gather GVL opted for stacked, multicolored shipping containers over old brick to house its dozen vendors dishing everything from acai bowls to lobster rolls.

Just outside of town in the Village of West Greenville—a revitalized thoroughfare heavy on art galleries— the Anchorage is aptly named for its role on the street. Exposed brick and whitewashed rafters complement a menu driven by its relationship with nearby Horseshoe Farm. Opt for the four-course family-style tasting menu.

Of course, trendy perimeter developments wouldn’t exist without a strong urban root structure. Main Street—which now extends well across the river into the once blue-collar West End—is a highly walkable thoroughfare in the heart of Greenville. Start the day at Methodical Coffee , a serene, light-filled space with an excellent “Tres Leches” latte, or a “Lord Have Mercy” detox juice with ginger, cayenne, and lemon from Southern Pressed Juicery . On weekends, you can skip the wait for a brunch table by joining a breakfast ramble with Foothill Foodie Tours . It also offers dessert and cocktail tours—solid values that let diners chow down on Main Street with minimal hassle. These aren’t “tasting” tours—you won’t leave hungry.

Outside of Oak Hill—a restaurant that’s worth planning a Greenville trip around—the best place to land a reservation is Husk BBQ , where chef and pit master Dave Jensen takes the classic smoked meat platter to elevated heights. After dinner, cap the night with the doughnut holes—cloud-like vessels for the salted caramel dipping sauce—at Foxcroft Wine Co ., charmingly set in a restored brick building that once housed a Ford dealership in the Model T era. Or close the night just across the street with a slice of the surprisingly light chocolate truffle cake at Old Europe .

Greenville’s Main Street hasn’t gone the way of Charleston’s Market or lower King Streets—restaurants catering to tourists and locals are not geographically segregated. In Greenville, locals and visitors still dine together. The city is bustling, growing at a dizzying pace, yet to a visitor, it still feels undiscovered.

Just 20 years ago, the notion of Charleston as an internationally sought-after destination for culture and cuisine was a scoff-worthy suggestion. But when South Carolina has its next moment, it will be Greenville’s bright glow that catches and holds the world’s gaze.

Mice on Main: The Scavenger Hunt

Mice on Main is by far THE cutest of all the best activities in Greenville, where you’re invited to take part in a scavenger hunt to find the nine bronze mice hiding along Main Street between the Hyatt Regency hotel and the Westin Poinsett hotel.

Find all the clues at the official Greenville SC website and set off on your way to find these cute critters. It’s such a wonderful idea, that was thought of by a high school student over 20 years ago, and inspired by the delightful children’s book Goodnight Moon .

Sure, the Mice on Main is aimed at kids, but we seriously think it’s one of the most fun free things to do in Greenville for people of any age! Public art truly is one of society’s greatest gifts!

The 14 Best Things To Do In Greenville, South Carolina

  • Where To Stay

As someone who has lived in Atlanta on and off since 1978, I'm still amazed at the gems that abound in every nook of the Southeast. There's great delight in discovering a new (to me) treasure like the concentration of Korean restaurants near the automotive manufacturers in Alabama or the abundance of incredible immigrant-led restaurants in Clarkston, Georgia.

I've often traveled through Greenville, South Carolina on the drive from Atlanta to Asheville to visit my parents. I can't count the number of times that I've purchased superior South Carolina peaches from the roadside stand next to the Spinx gas station in nearby Travelers Rest because I was wondering what to eat but drawing a blank. I won't have that problem after this eating expedition, because I have found that Greenville's culinary offerings make it a place worth savoring.

As a restaurant critic and a mom, I have two essential criteria for a Southern road trip: There must be good dining options and lots of activities. Greenville has both, including plenty of museums with exciting exhibits and established restaurants in every category, whether it's Bucky's Bar-B-Q or fresh regional cuisine at Soby's . There are imports from other Southern cities and towns, including the Mast General Store (with barrels of candy) and Halls Chophouse out of Charleston, but Greenville has a distinct personality all its own.

Things To Do In Greenville, South Carolina

Get serious about cooking.

The Cook's Station presents a hyper-Southern array of products showcased next to top-of-the-line BlueStar ovens for those who have food and cooking on the brain. Its newest location on Buncombe Street in downtown Greenville opened during the pandemic and sells gadgets and goodies that you never even knew you needed. Want to shop for a while? Grab a glass of Champagne from the wine bar or a sandwich at the cafe.

www.thecooksstation.com , 515 Buncombe St., Greenville, SC 29601

Enjoy The City's Green Spaces

Fall Park on the Reedy is a park located right downtown featuring a uniquely curved, single-side support suspension bridge overlooking a waterfall. It's a beautiful place to enjoy a walk or bike ride and work up an appetite for the restaurants nearby. If you're looking for more exercise , the  Swamp Rabbit Trail  is a 22-mile paved multi-use path that travels along the Reedy River and an old railroad corridor, eventually connecting to the nearby city of Travelers Rest.

Find A Festival

Downtown is a central hub for activities in Greenville most Thursdays and Fridays. NOMA Square hosts outdoor concerts both nights from March until the end of summer. Traveling in late spring? Artisphere is a celebration of visual, performing, and culinary arts in May, while Jazz Fest takes place in June.

Appreciate The Arts

Greenville is home to many performing arts spaces that provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy live theater , a performance by the symphony orchestra, or a ballet. The Peace Center is a 6-acre downtown destination for catching outdoor concerts or a Broadway show. Visit the Greenville County Museum of Art to see a nationally acclaimed collection of American art from Federal portraits to modern masters. Highlights include an extensive collection of watercolors by Andrew Wyeth and the work of contemporary artist Jasper Johns, who grew up in South Carolina.

Learn About Local History

Near the art museum in Greenville's Heritage Area, the Upcountry History Museum captures the history and cultures of the upper part of the state in a series of eye-catching exhibits. This museum also brings in traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian and other museums that will satisfy history buffs and entertain children.

www.upcountryhistory.org , 540 Buncombe Street, Greenville, South Carolina 29601

Tour Shoeless Joe Jackson's Home

Baseball fans can tour the final home of Shoeless Joe Jackson across from Fluor Field, the minor league home of the Greenville Drive . The Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum and Baseball Library displays artifacts and photos to preserve the legacy of the "greatest natural hitter to ever play the game." You can also stop by his grave at Woodlawn Memorial Park, where fans often leave baseballs and other memorabilia.

www.shoelessjoejackson.org , 356 Field St., Greenville, SC 29601

Meander Through The West End

In the West End of downtown close to Fluor Field, you'll find Gather GVL , an outdoor food court of multicolored shipping containers. It's home to 13 businesses serving everything from giant artisan doughnuts at HenDough to Maine-style lobster rolls at The Lob Father . As you walk down Augusta Street, you'll see cute boutiques like Augusta Twenty selling brands like Vince, Longchamp, and Alice + Olivia plus locally made jewelry.

Where To Eat In Greenville, South Carolina

Savor fresh pasta.

After a day of shopping, lunch at Jianna is a wonderful way to recharge. Fresh pasta is the first thing you notice as you climb the pastel green stairs to the Italian eatery, which looks out onto Falls Park on the Reedy. If the weather permits, take a seat on the patio. Order the tender and light chicken piccata or any of the homemade pasta dishes. Each is sauced with a deft hand and is even better complemented by wine—you are on vacation, after all.

Graze And Nibble

Mix and match shareable plates from the "Graze and Nibble" menu at The Lazy Goat. Don't want to share? Try an entree like the Confit Duck Leg & Purple Potato Gnocchi or Tunisian Pork Tenderloin instead. This Mediterranean fusion restaurant also boasts a great view of the city from its open-air patio.

Expand Your Palate

In recent years, the city's food scene has expanded its borders, both geographically and culturally. There's everything from Aryana Afghan Cuisine to tacos at Califas , a strip mall spot that started in 2020 as a pop-up serving trendy birria (a slow-cooked meat filling). Califas' owner, Erika Dila, hails from Culver City, California, hence menu items with names like Sunset Boulevard and Palm Springs. The classic Heavenly Delicious Birria Taco is a perfect benchmark for how this dish should taste, and the crispy tortilla shell and gooey strings of melted white cheese make it way too fun to eat. Dip it into the accompanying consommé (cooking liquid) for a saucy treat.

Enjoy Award-Winning Cuisine

Neighborhood favorite The Anchorage was a James Beard Award semifinalist in 2018. Chefs Gregory McPhee (who was on the opening team at Husk in Charleston ) and Alex Morgan make this a can't-miss spot. Enter through Taxi House Wines , which sells a fun assortment of the bottles served at this bi-level eatery. Although the cocktails with whimsical names like Kermit the Fizz are delightful, wines match the incredible menu best. Delicious options might include a handcrafted cheese plate with silky smooth bourbon-liver mousse or a thick slab of North Carolina swordfish with fresh greens and fried garlic.

Explore Nearby Travelers Rest

It would be hard to discuss the culinary scene in Greenville without mentioning the town of Travelers Rest , which is about 9 miles away and growing into a powerhouse with strong ties to the land. There you'll find Topsoil Restaurant . As soon as you see the door handles, which are cast from metal to look like curled carrots (with tops intact), you'll know this is a place that takes the earth seriously. Committed to farm-to-table cuisine, chef Adam Cooke was a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef Southeast in 2020.

Baguettes are for sale near the hosting stand, but save yourself for the jaw-dropping ways this kitchen spins ingredients, such as a plate of za'atar-roasted carrots and beets served with chard hummus and cilantro pesto. If you're lucky, you might catch the homemade raspberry doughnuts; they're slightly sweet, a little tart, and pure love in each warm bite.

Given the abundance of tourists visiting Southern towns, it seems like the rest of the nation is finally waking up to find that our culinary industry has something to say—and we don't whisper. After seeing other cities get their due, it's great fun to watch the accolades for the Greenville area roll in and to see its tide rise.

Located in South Carolina's Upstate in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city of Greenville is one of the nation's fastest-growing cities and draws nearly 5.5. million visitors annually for its scenic parks and outdoor activities, acclaimed museums and performing art venues, restaurants, breweries, and shopping. Within driving distance of other Southeastern cities like Atlanta, Asheville, and Charlotte , Greenville makes a great weekend getaway, whether you want to kick back on a patio with a local brew, pedal to the best restaurants and attractions, or hiking to sweeping mountain views.

Visit Falls Park on the Reedy

This stunning, 32-acre green space in downtown's historic West End is the ultimate urban oasis. Stroll along the walking trails to view landscaped gardens, public art installations, dramatic stonework, and a wall from the site's original 18th century grist mill or grab snacks from local vendors and settle in for a scenic picnic. For the best views of the city and the park's namesake dramatic waterfalls, cross the 355-foot suspension Liberty Bridge, the longest single-sided bridge in the Western Hemisphere.

Opt Outside at Paris Mountain Park

Formed by a monadnock that towers above dense hardwood forest just ten minutes from downtown Greenville, Paris Mountain is the site of a 1,540-acre state park that is one of the city's best recreation areas. Hike or mountain bike over 15 miles of trails, from the gentle, nearly 1-mile Lake Placid Loop to the steep, technical 12-mile Paris Mountain Big Loop. In the warmer months, swim in the designated area in Lake Placid or rent a kayak, canoe, or pedal boat to explore the calm waters. The park also has fishing and boating access and offers 39 paved campsites and five trailside campsites for those wishing to stay overnight, plus picnic shelters and an educational park center.

Pedal Down the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail

Courtesy of Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail

This 22-mile mixed use greenway follows an old railroad bed and connects downtown Greenville to the town of Travelers Rest. Rent a bike from Reedy Rides —rates start at $20 for a half-day—or take a guided tour to pedal to points of interest along the trail, including public art installations, quirky coffee shops, and local breweries. Head 1 mile east from downtown to explore Cleveland Park and the Greenville Zoo. Or venture 6 miles north to picturesque Furman University and its iconic lake and bell tower, ideal for lounging with a book or enjoying a picnic. Just further to the north at the trail's end is the Swamp Rabbit Brewery & Taproom , where you can enjoy snacks and local brews before your return trip.

Visit the Greenville County Museum of Art

Located on the Heritage Green cultural campus downtown, this modern museum is home to the world's largest public collection of Andrew Wyeth watercolors. The museum's permanent collection also includes a significant number of pieces from South Carolina contemporary artist Jasper Johns as well as a Southern collection with works ranging from early colonial pastel portraits to American impressionism and abstract expressionism.

Sample Local Brews

Greenville is home to more than a dozen local breweries, many of them offering on-site tastings and tours, plus live music, food trucks, patios, and outdoor games. Your first stop? The city's oldest, and family-run Thomas Creek Brewery , known for its signature IPAs like the Class Five. In addition, the space hosts a Broadway series with touring productions of the latest hits like Mean Girls and Hamilton, plus film screenings, comedy shows, music recitals, and performances by popular musicians such as Old Crow Medicine Show and Patti LaBelle. Even if not attending a show, the beautifully landscaped grounds are worth a visit.

See the Stars at the Roper Mountain Science Center

This science academy is part of the Greenville County School District but has many programs available to the general public. The most popular of these is its "Friday Starry Nights" shows at the T.C. The Roper Mountain property also has a 1-mile nature trail, butterfly garden, and living history farm.

Play at Table Rock State Park

Located 25 miles northeast of downtown, Table Rock State Park offers over a dozen miles of hiking trails ranging from half-mile easy excursions to strenuous paths that wind through dense forest and over boulders to the mountain's 3,124-foot summit. The park also has two lakes, with seasonal swimming access as well as kayak, canoe, and pedal boat rentals, plus fishing piers, a playground, a gift shop, and monthly "Music on the Mountain" bluegrass jam sessions held at Table Rock Lodge. Whether you’re looking for a fun day trip with the family or an abbreviated romantic getaway, this one-day Greenville itinerary will help you make the most of your time in this great city. From arts events and outdoor activities to delicious restaurants and a remarkable downtown, there’s something for everyone here.

Greenville, South Carolina, is the largest city in Upstate South Carolina. Livability ranked it as one of the Top 100 Places to Live (it really is!). I’ve lived here since 2006, and I’m telling you this is also a great place to visit.

Plan the perfect trip to South Carolina with this free printable travel planner.

How to spend one day in Greenville, SC

There are so many great ways to fill your day or overnight trip to Greenville, South Carolina, and so many fun things to do. Here are the top things to do in the city.

Explore downtown Greenville

The city of Greenville has spent many years developing its downtown into an area that its residents and guests can enjoy exploring and generally just hanging out in. We truly have one of the best downtowns in America for our tree-lined Main Street full of shops and great dining options.

Of all the ways to spend part of a day in Greenville, this is one of my very favorites. I really don’t think there’s a better way to explore the heart of Greenville than to walk around the downtown area.

Stop by a locally owned coffee shop or restaurant, or shop in one of the unique stores.

Downtown Greenville is becoming quite the foodie destination , thanks to local restaurateurs. You’ll come across some chain restaurants in the area too, but you’ll discover that Greenville loves its homegrown restaurants.

small river flowing by modern buildings

Try a Greenville walking tour

Why not make exploring downtown Greenville more fun and rewarding by taking a leisurely walking tour? This way, you can maximize your experience of the area. Exploring a new city through a walking tour is one of the best ways to discover its past, see famous landmarks, and immerse yourself in the local vibe.

If you’re a fan of breakfast food (like me!) then you might enjoy this walking tour of Greenville that also includes a lot of breakfast.

Or want to explore the sweet side of Greenville? Try this small-group dessert tour.

If you’re looking for a fun way to check out downtown Greenville, you might enjoy this city Segway tour . So, that’s not a walking tour, but you get the idea.

Saturday Market

If you’re visiting Greenville between May and October, check out the Saturday Market .

Start your morning off bright and early at the market located on Main Street from 8 a.m. to noon, situated at the corner of McBee Ave and Main St. Shop away along Main Street to find all kinds of goodies!

Explore the offerings of more than 75 vendors selling local produce, flowers, food, and other hand-crafted goods. Everything offered has to be grown or made within 100 miles of Greenville.

Mice on Main

This is a fun one for those traveling with kids. Hunt through Main Street in downtown Greenville on the lookout for nine bronze mice. Check out the clues on the official Greenville tourism website to help in your scavenger hunt.

Falls Park on the Reedy

bridge spanning small river with trees on the bank

While taking in the sights of downtown Greenville, why not stop by Spill the Beans for a tasty coffee beverage or ice cream? Then explore one of the most popular attractions in town, Falls Park on the Reedy.

The picturesque Reedy River Falls, in the heart of downtown Greenville, is proudly celebrated in the name of this park. The 354-foot Liberty Bridge is a unique architectural feature that has made it one of the most popular spots in the city center.

Take a stroll to one of the nearby restaurants, or better yet bring your picnic and savor it in one of the picturesque spots alongside Reedy River. I mean, if the weather is good. And it very often is.

The park is free for guests to explore and is open every day.

TIP: Keep track of all of your important travel details with a digital travel planner like this .

Greenville Zoo

For all the animal lovers out there, a visit to Greenville Zoo is an absolute must while you’re in town. It’s one of my favorite small zoos ever.

I am deeply inspired by their staunch commitment to conservation, which includes offering a grant that funds programs for the protection of wildlife.

Enjoy free parking at two nearby lots, as well as the added convenience of proximity to Cleveland Park and the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Swamp Rabbit Trail

Stretching 22 miles from Greenville to Travelers Rest, South Carolina, the historic Swamp Rabbit Trail is perfect for cycling and hiking. On the weekends, taking a jog or bike ride along The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a popular pastime in Greenville.

If you need a mid-hike or mid-ride pick-me-up, there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments, from snacks and coffee to ice cream treats.

A lot of the Swamp Rabbit Trail follows the Reedy River, the same river that flows through the center of Greenville and Falls Park.

Okay, let’s address the elephant in the room. The name of Swamp Rabbit Trail. We also have an East Coast Hockey League team called the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. I swear I am not making that up. Evidently, the swamp rabbit is native to this region. Why we think that means we have to name a bunch of stuff after this creature, I really couldn’t tell you. Nevertheless, here we are.

Greenville County Museum of Art

When I travel, one of my favorite activities is visiting art museums. From the Met in New York City to the Louvre in Paris, I am always captivated by these beautiful spaces and the artwork they display.

The Greenville County Museum of Art has one of the best collections of American art I’ve had the joy of seeing in a regional museum. This includes the largest public collection of Andrew Wyeth watercolors (swoon!).

The museum is conveniently situated at Heritage Green in downtown Greenville. Heritage Green is a cultural campus that includes,

  • the GCMA (of course)
  • the main branch (Hughes) of the Greenville County Library System
  • the Greenville Theatre
  • Children’s Museum of the Upstate,
  • Sigal Music Museum, and the
  • Upcountry History Museum.

Admission to the Greenville County Museum of Art is free. There is a small charge to park in the Heritage Green parking lot during normal business hours on weekdays.

Take in a show at the Peace Center

exterior of a large brick and glass building

Another one of the crown jewels of downtown Greenville is the Peace Center , a renowned performing arts facility. The Peace Center is home to Greenville’s orchestra and chorale, but it also regularly hosts renowned artists from various genres and Broadway productions.

The roster of artists that have taken the stage includes The Beach Boys, Chicago, renowned soprano Renee Fleming, and multiple Tony-award-winning Audra McDonald along with violin virtuoso Joshua Bell.

From Hamilton to The Lion King and Wicked , the Peace Center’s theatre calendar is packed with phenomenal Broadway shows that draw people from all over the area.

Not only is the Peace Center a premier venue, but they are also determined to reduce its environmental footprint. In fact, many believe that this is the first zero-waste-to-landfill arts facility.

Attend a Greenville Drive Game

Baseball players warming up on a field with a green fence.

Even if performing arts don’t appeal to everyone, surely baseball is something everyone can get behind.

If you’re visiting Greenville, South Carolina, during baseball season, I encourage you to check out the Greenville Drive playing at Fluor Field, even if you don’t usually like going to sporting events.

The Greenville Drive is a High-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and they have one of the best minor league ballparks in the U.S. Seriously, I love it. They even have their own Green Monster like at Fenway in Boston.

Where to stay in Greenville, South Carolina

Whether you’re looking for an intimate stay or something more glamorous, there are plenty of options when it comes to finding the perfect place to stay in Greenville. Here are some of the best hotels Greenville has to offer.

Try the lovely Westin Poinsett Greenville in the heart of the city. It’s a AAA Four Diamond hotel and offers pet-friendly accommodations.

Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville   is one of Greenville’s newest hotels. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the center of downtown and the Peace Center.

Aloft Greenville Downtown offers a great location along with gym facilities and an outdoor pool.

Hampton Inn Greenville includes free hot breakfast and is just 15 minutes from Greenville Spartanburg International Airport.

When to visit Greenville, South Carolina

One of the most important things to consider when planning a trip to Greenville is deciding on the best time of year to visit.

Greenville weather

For the weather, visiting in late spring might be a great time, or into fall is also good.

If you struggle with allergies, early spring is probably not a good time to visit. And late summer can bring heavy storms that spin off from hurricane weather on the South Carolina coast. The middle of summer is just too hot and humid in my opinion.

The coldest and most disagreeable winter weather in Greenville typically comes in January and February. This is when the potential for snow and/or ice is highest.

Greenville festivals

Greenville, South Carolina, offers a lot in the way of festivals and special events. Choose to visit Greenville in May or October if you want to participate in one of the city’s signature events, Artisphere or Fall for Greenville.

Other great seasonal events and activities include:

  • U.Day (October), Christmas Carol Sing and Lighting Ceremony (Friday a week after Thanksgiving), and Living Gallery (Easter Weekend) at Bob Jones University
  • Music by the Lake free summer live music concert series at Furman University
  • Indie Craft Parade (September)
  • Plus lots and lots more!

PRO TIP: If you have flexible travel dates you need to check out Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). You get amazing flight deals sent straight to your inbox with instructions on how to book directly with the airlines. Check out Going here. Going is my favorite way to find great travel deals.

Other things to do in Greenville if you have more time

If you’re going to be in Greenville for longer than just a day, perhaps a weekend getaway, here are a couple of more things you might want to add to your itinerary.

There are a lot of great day trips from Greenville .

Why Go To Greenville, SC

With more than 30 cities and towns in the United States named Greenville, it's no wonder the tourism slogan for Greenville, South Carolina, is "yeah, that Greenville." Founded in 1786, that Greenville is the oldest of the group, the third-largest urban area in the state and one that is known nationally as one of the fastest-growing cities in the South. From families and foodies to cyclists and culture lovers, visitors will find an array of people, attractions and activities, many of them centered in the compact downtown district.

Start your exploration at NOMA Square – an outdoor plaza at the corner of North Main Street and Beattie Place – and see if you can spot the nine bronze mice sculptures hidden throughout the neighborhood. Both kids and adults will enjoy the works on display at the Greenville County Museum of Art and the fun, interactive exhibits at the Children's Museum of the Upstate , both located on the Heritage Green campus within three blocks of the shops and restaurants on the Main Street corridor. Meanwhile, outdoor enthusiasts can access the nearly 20-mile-long GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail from four different points downtown or just relax at Falls Park on the Reedy , a pastoral oasis in the heart of Greenville.

Greenville, SC Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best times to visit Greenville are from September to November and from March to May. Temperatures are relatively mild, without the intense humidity of the summer, and crowds are smaller at local attractions. Fall is a beautiful time of year for hikers and bikers when the foliage in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains bursts into color, and spring brings lush green trees and colorful blooms. You may see some rain in September, but October and November are relatively dry. April is the driest month in the spring. Fall and spring are also both shoulder seasons, so rates drop on accommodations.

What You Need to Know

Take a taste tour From country ham and grits to croissants, charcuterie and craft moonshine, Greenville is a foodie haven.

Greenville loves kids In addition to parks and bike trails, attractions like Runway Park at the downtown airport and the Children's Museum of the Upstate offer hours of play for children.

How to Save Money in Greenville, SC

Ditch the car Many of Greenville's top attractions and restaurants are concentrated in the downtown area, meaning a car isn't necessary unless you plan to travel beyond the city. Plus, if your feet get tired, you can hop on the free trolley or solar-powered shuttle that loops throughout the central business district.

Take advantage of discounts Visit Greenville SC offers coupons and deals on its website for everything from accommodations to tours. Check to see if any align with your trip.

Plan a winter visit Winters in Greenville are mild, with low temperatures hovering in the 30s or 40s and highs in the 50s or 60s. If you don't mind the cooler climes, you'll be rewarded with some of the lowest accommodation rates of the year.

What to Eat

Zagat calls Greenville "an under-the-radar" food destination that's a combination of Charleston 's Southern sensibilities and Asheville 's hip farm-to-table food scene. More than 100 restaurants line the nearly 2-mile-long Main Street corridor offering everything from contemporary Southern cuisine to French fare and Mediterranean flavors, as well as the local favorites like barbecue, biscuits and sweet potato pie.

Soby's is often credited with initiating the city's thriving culinary scene. The contemporary Southern cuisine includes sophisticated interpretations of classics, such as she-crab soup, shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes. If you're craving steak, Rick Erwin's West End Grill is another local favorite.

Another hot spot: Roost , helmed by chef Trevor Higgins. Everything from protein to produce (and even the beer) is sourced locally. Feeling continental? Passerelle Bistro in Falls Park dishes up traditional French favorites like cassoulet, steak frites and salade niçoise for lunch and dinner. And when the weather allows, you can dine on the patio overlooking the falls. If you prefer a river view, head to The Lazy Goat , which takes you to the Mediterranean with Spanish cheese, fine charcuterie and braised pork belly.

When you're ready to satisfy your sweet tooth, sample the sweet potato pie at the Brick Street Café or the salted caramel banana pudding at The Chocolate Moose .

Getting Around Greenville, SC

The best way to get around Greenville is on foot, by bike or by hopping on the free trolley, which runs year-round Thursday through Sunday. Greenville is easily accessible by car from Interstate 85, which runs right through the city; the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) welcomes flights from five major carriers. While there are several car rental services (including Hertz, Budget and Avis) and one taxi company that provide transportation to and from the airport, taxi service in the city itself is limited. Rideshare services like Lyft are also available.

Many of Greenville ' s popular attractions are within walking distance of its compact downtown district.

Your Day Trip to Greenville Starts Here

Enjoy Some Fresh Air…

Take a stroll down Main Street . The tree lined street is one of the most beautiful main streets in the country. If you have children with you, be sure to look for the Mice on Main, which is a scavenger hunt for the tiny bronze mice statues scattered all along the street between The Hyatt Regency and Westin Poinsett Hotel. (You can print out a hint sheet with clues as to where the Mice on Main are .)

As you walk down Main Street, you will come to the historic West End. Here, you will find Falls Park . It is a beautiful, serene spot in the middle of town. The Reedy River flows through the park, and there are waterfalls and gardens to enjoy. The Liberty Bridge crosses over Reedy River Falls. This 345 foot long suspension bridge is one of a kind and is the perfect spot to take in the view.

Hit the Trail…

The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 22 mile greenway, used for bicycling, running, and walking that travels along the Reedy River and connects Greenville, SC to Travelers Rest, SC. One way to access the trail is from Falls Park. If you enjoy being out in nature and getting some exercise at the same time, then the Swamp Rabbit Trail is a great way to spend some time.

Spend Some Time with the Animals…

The Greenville Zoo is located at Cleveland Park. It is a 14 acre zoo with wildlife from all over the world. It is a terrific place to bring the kids, or anyone who loves animals. There is so much to see and learn at the zoo. It is fun for all ages!

So Many Museums…

Visit the area of downtown called Heritage Green to soak up some culture. All in one section of downtown, you will find the Greenville County Museum of Art, the Upcountry History Museum, and the Children’s Museum of the Upstate . You can see fabulous art work, learn the history of Greenville, and even entertain the kids all within walking distance.

If you are a baseball fan, then head to Flour Field . Located in downtown Greenville, Flour Field is the home of The Greenville Drive. This minor league, Class A team is an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox in the South Atlantic League. In fact, the stadium is modeled after Fenway Park and is a fun place to take in a game.

Hit the Ice…

If you prefer an indoor sport, then catch a hockey game at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena , which is home to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. This minor league hockey team is an affiliate of the NY Rangers (NHL) and the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL). There is always excitement when watching a game!

Downtown Greenville Restaurants

Oh, the Places to Eat…

There are so many wonderful restaurants, that it is hard to only list a few. Below is just a sample of the local cuisine:

  • Chicora Alley – Southern Caribbean cuisine
  • Sushi Go – The name really says it all.

Frequently asked questions

  • Wherever you’re traveling, flying can be a pleasant experience if you come prepared. First of all, pack your passport (or a valid ID), travel documents and medications. Next, toss in some in-flight entertainment to help the time fly by. The latest bestseller and a tablet filled with your favorite movies are a couple of good options. If you plan on getting some sleep, a quality neck pillow and noise-canceling headphones are also worth bringing along.
  • There’s a list of items you shouldn’t pack in your carry-on too. Flammables, explosives and sharps are strictly prohibited in the cabin — they often include knives, razor blades, flares and aerosol cans. Some sporting equipment, like baseball bats and martial arts weapons, also generally can’t go in your hand luggage. Visit your airline’s website for details about what you can and can’t take on board.
  • Opt for comfort rather than fashion when flying. Dress in layers and wear natural materials since they allow air and moisture to pass through and keep you cool. Cabin temperatures can get cold on long-haul flights, so pack a hoodie or similar and always wear sneakers or flat, closed-toe shoes.
  • The condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-haul flights. It’s the result of blood clotting caused by poor circulation and inactivity. Wandering up and down the aisle and doing foot and leg exercises while seated can prevent it developing. Wearing compression tights or socks also helps to lessen your risk.

Looking for Mother's Day getaway? These 2 SC cities named best for mother-daughter weekend

Your Mother's Day trip will be sprinkled with plenty of southern charm if you venture to one of these two Southern Living recommended cities.

Charleston and Greenville were named in the magazine's "The Best Southern Destinations for a Mother-Daughter Weekend Away" list. The Holy City placed at No. 3 out of 10 on the list while Greenville came in at No. 6.

No matter which city you plan on traveling with your mother to, you are bound to run into a variety of fun activities to do together. In Charleston, get mom a gift as she browses the shops on King Street. For brunch, dine at The Darling Oyster Bar, one of the city's best seafood restaurants.

You can also venture to Greenville and explore the lush landscapes that make up Falls Park, making your way up Liberty Bridge to pose for mother-daughter pictures in front of the Falls. Afterwards, dine downtown at the recently opened Carmella's Cafe & Dessert Bar for a sweet treat.

When it comes to the arts, beaches, dining, and shopping, the Holy City has it all, according to the Southern Living piece. If you are planning on staying over for Mother's Day weekend, the pretty in pink Mills House would be a great option for mom, located right in the heart of historic downtown. After unpacking your belongings, head on down to The Darling Oyster Bar for brunch (because in the south, shrimp and grits are always in fashion). Southern Living recommends strolling the shops on King Street, and then taking in the views together from the Battery . To top the day off, spend the afternoon sailing the Carolina Queen , where you and mom can count the dolphins swimming along the seas.

We know diamonds are a girl's best friend, but you may want to consider bringing mom to the southern gem that is Greenville. If you ask folks who grew up here in the '90s what this place was like back in the day, they will tell you that it was nowhere near the bustling city it is now. Home to the beautiful Falls Park and Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail , Greenville continues to grow and land national lists. Per Southern Living, escape into spring with mom through the mentioned parks and trails. The magazine also suggests grabbing a coffee at one of the city's many "stylish" coffee shops (Unity Park's Methodical Coffee is one of them). If you stop by Carmella's Cafe & Dessert Bar on Mother's Day weekend, you may have to wait in line ― this place gets busy due to its delectable sweets and fine wines.

A former Freeport man has been arrested and accused of buying nearly a dozen firearms at a pawnshop in South Carolina and illegally reselling the purchases in Nassau, according to the county district attorney’s office.

The man, Kim Lilly, 45, now of Greenville, South Carolina, sold rifles and pistols between August 2023 and January, and had two other firearms when he was arrested earlier this month, the office said in a news release.

Lilly was arraigned Wednesday and charged on an indictment with 59 counts, including criminal sale of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.

He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. He was remanded to the Nassau County jail. The case is due back in court May 23.

Lilly is accused of selling 11 firearms. All but one were loaded and sold with ammo, officials said.

Of those guns, the office said, one “was defaced and hidden beneath the driver side floor mat of Lilly’s car.”

In a news release, Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly said Lilly made several trips in and out of New York, up and down the I-95 corridor, to engage in illegal gun trafficking.

A co-defendant who was in the car, Tomeca Jeter, 49, also of South Carolina, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, with bail set at $50,000 cash, $100,000 bond or $500,000 partially secured bond.

Neither attorney for the defendants could be reached for comment.
