The 13 best all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica for beach visits or hiking trips

Caroline Lascom

Thanks to its Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, cloud forests, volcanoes and marine reserves, Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. So, it's no wonder the country received over 2 million visitors in 2023 — surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

A pioneer in sustainable tourism famed for its eco-lodges and boutique hotels, the so-called Switzerland of Central America may not seem like the obvious choice for an all-inclusive vacation .

However, stereotypes have shifted . Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton and other big hotel brands have upped their all-inclusive game in recent years and introduced more luxe amenities, such as craft cocktail bars, haute cuisine and personalized service.

In Costa Rica, all-inclusive resorts are also channeling the country's nature-loving "pura vida" motto. Many offer immersive experiences that encourage guests to encounter a more authentic side of Costa Rica while still enjoying the benefits of an all-inclusive getaway.

Here are 13 of our favorite all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica.

The resort's 12 bars and eateries — each with a distinct culinary theme and vibe — serve everything from hearty Tico dishes and fresh seafood to modern Italian and Asian-fusion fare. There's also a locally inspired kids menu that skews wholesome, so you don't have to worry about satiating the little ones' appetites before and after outdoor adventures.

Tucked away on 864 acres in the foothills of southern Costa Rica's Talamanca Mountains, Hacienda AltaGracia is one of the country's most exclusive wellness retreats.

Part of the upscale Auberge brand portfolio, Hacienda AltaGracia's 50 luxurious casitas are scattered across a gorgeous backdrop of rolling hills, lush forests and rushing rivers. Units harmoniously blend the inside and the outside with polished wood and marble. Each features a terrace with a private plunge pool and views across the almost impossibly green hills of the San Isidro Valley.

Wellness is of the utmost importance at Hacienda AltaGracia: Guests can take part in purification ceremonies, reiki, mindful breakfasts, energy-healing sessions, treatments in infrared cabins, yoga and guided meditation. The property offers an overall at-one-with-nature vibe.

Guests can also indulge in the property's imaginatively prepared (and abundant) food and cocktails by the pool or relax at the palatial hydrotherapy center. There's even a health coach to help chart your course.

Amenities include a fitness center, three pools, two Jacuzzis, an on-site organic farm, a coffee plantation and horse stables. With plenty of activities and spacious rooms, the hotel is also highly recommended among families.

All-inclusive rates at Hacienda AltaGracia start at $1,520 per night, based on double occupancy.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas — a recent addition to the Relais & Chateaux portfolio — is not a traditional all-inclusive resort by any stretch, but its seven-night "Workation" package, which includes three a la carte meals daily, among other perks, is a fine way to experience this liberating concept without sacrificing gourmet dining, luxurious accommodations, personalized service and curated adventures.

Couples looking to combine romance with adrenaline-filled adventures will find a lot to love about this polished boutique eco-lodge that embraces a "pura vida" philosophy underpinned by an impressive commitment to sustainability.

There are three categories of villas (starting at 721 square feet) to choose from. They are tastefully appointed with breezy canopy beds, polished tiled floors and light wooden furnishings, all designed to blend with the natural setting.

Expansive private terraces feature private saltwater plunge pools — some also have spectacular views overlooking the bay. Thoughtful amenities include fully stocked minibars, high-thread-count linens, high-speed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth speakers.

The on-site restaurant, Sentido Norte, is considered one of the region's best fine-dining venues. La Pampa Grill serves traditional Costa Rican fare along with locally sourced meat cooked on an open fire.

Rates at Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas start at $895 per night, based on double occupancy. For the all-inclusive "Workation" package, rates start from $9,105 per room for seven nights, based on double occupancy.

One of TPG's favorite hotels in Central America, the Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo offers much of the luxury, on-point service and thoughtful amenities of the nearby Four Seasons but at a much more palatable price.

Carved into the mountainside amid a riot of vegetation, the Andaz exudes tropical charm. Capuchin monkeys swing from the treetops surrounding the zero-entry family pool and the adults-only pool — both of which are narrow but offer breathtaking views.

The Andaz Papagayo recently debuted 25 one-, two- and three-bedroom residential villas in an exclusive hilltop section.

There are three exceptional on-site restaurants: Rio Bhongo has a casual coastal vibe, the reimagined Ostra restaurant offers seafood, and the fun Chao Pescao provides inventive tapas accompanied by an inspired cocktail list.

While this is not an all-inclusive resort per se, full-board meal packages are available. These packages work out to be much more economical if you anticipate spending your evenings dining on the property — which is definitely no hardship.

The resort's indoor-outdoor philosophy extends to the guest rooms, which, at 560 square feet (or more), provide plenty of space to spread out. Woven textiles, endemic wood, bamboo furnishings and local handicrafts blend chic design with a true Costa Rican aesthetic. Modern bathrooms feature river stone rain-style showers and large windows that overlook the jungle and ocean scenery.

A meandering pathway leads to a jungle-backed cove where you can make use of complimentary kayaks, snorkeling equipment and paddleboards. Or, hop on the shuttle for a 10-minute ride to the resort's recently revamped beach club, Casa de Playa, fronted by a more expansive beach.

Rates cover most classes and activities, but additional (small) charges apply for the coffee-making, ceviche-making and mixology classes. The 11,000-square-foot spa offers treatments and therapies, and there is a small fitness center and a kids club.

Rates at the Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo start at $586 or 25,000 World of Hyatt points per night (as of March 26). Rates for two-bedroom villas start at $2,800 per night, based on seasonality. Keep in mind, though, that you cannot redeem points for the food-and-beverage packages.

Lapa Rios is everything a wilderness lodge should be. Set on 1,000 acres of primary and secondary rainforest, the property offers glowing eco-credentials, expert guides and passionate staff.

Guests can fill their days with educationally focused hikes in Corcovado National Park, the crown jewel of the country's national park system — described by National Geographic as "the most biologically intense place on Earth." Attentive service is tailored to each guest's needs, and inspired cuisine showcases local produce and flavors.

Natural woods, fabrics and bamboo abound in the 17 guest bungalows, which provide a close-to-nature experience without sacrificing the modern conveniences of an upscale resort. Accommodations range from luxurious stand-alone villas with private plunge pools to smaller, rustic thatched-roof bungalows (no air conditioning) with screened-in porches and large decks with outdoor showers.

Daily programming suits nature lovers and adrenaline junkies alike, and nightly rates include activities and tours. All-inclusive packages also come with three a la carte meals daily, plus snacks and nonalcoholic drinks.

All-inclusive rates at Lapa Rios Lodge start at $808 per person, per night.

Tucked into the hillside overlooking beautiful Arenilla Beach, Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica is, without question, a place where you can easily slip into the castaway dream. This polished, intimately scaled property offers a best-of-both-worlds beach and rainforest setting.

The 202 bright, contemporary rooms start at 398 square feet and channel a tropical theme with blond wood and wicker furnishings in a soothing color palette. Large bathrooms feature double vanities, and furnished terraces have either garden or gulf views.

Four a la carte restaurants, as well as a buffet venue, an alfresco grill and a casual cafe set the scene for romantic date nights and all-day grazing while laying on a sun lounger.

Two gorgeous pools (one with a swim-up bar) inspire long, lazy days with a book and cocktail in hand. Active types can hit the gym or join any number of classes or activities that populate the daily calendar, including beach hikes, yoga classes and theme nights. The resort can also arrange off-site zip lining, snorkeling and rafting excursions.

All-inclusive rates at Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica start at $475 or 25,000 World of Hyatt points per night, based on double occupancy.

For nature-loving couples looking to truly immerse themselves in Costa Rica's wilder side, there's Rio Perdido, one of the country's most appealing lodges.

Surrounded by pristine dwarf forests, Rio Perdido's rugged topography, narrow canyons and lush vegetation provide sanctuary to mammals, reptiles, insects, amphibians and birds — everywhere you wander on- and off-property, you can expect to be enthralled by creatures.

Each stylish bungalow is designed to have a light environmental footprint, with handcrafted furnishings, chic wood accents, volcanic rock tile floors and modern bathrooms with picture windows framing rainforest views. East Bungalows start at 452 square feet and feature elevated terraces, minifridges that also serve as coffee stations, desk areas, flat-screen TVs and closets. More tech-forward Center Bungalows also have outdoor showers, high-definition projectors and sound bars with subwoofers.

Eco-adventure lovers will be in heaven here, as the property has everything from exhilarating zip line tours through the canyon to mountain bike rides, whitewater tubing excursions and naturalist-led day hikes to view local flora and fauna. On the property, there are also natural thermal pools, including one with a swim-up bar, and yogis can practice their sun salutations in cliffside "pods" that hang 140 feet above a geothermal river.

The lodge's emphasis on wellness continues with the cuisine, which harnesses homegrown, organic produce to serve such classic Costa Rican dishes as marinated beef loin with criollo dressing, as well as lighter international fare.

Rates for bungalows at Rio Perdido start at $420 per night, based on double occupancy. Three-night wellness packages, which include all meals and two 50-minute massages, start at $538 per person, based on double occupancy.

In the northwest corner of Guanacaste, near the Nicaragua border, sits Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica, a family-friendly counterpart to Secrets Papagayo. The template is similar in terms of design and amenities, only with more family-focused dining and activities thrown into the mix.

Overlooking the wild and beautiful Playa Jobo, the resort sits within an ecological haven and is surrounded by national parks and wildlife preserves. Active guests can dabble in an array of pursuits, ranging from leisurely wildlife walks on the property to zip lining through the rainforest to snorkeling and scuba diving in the bay's calm waters.

The 447 junior suites are light and airy, with natural furnishings accented by colorful fabrics and floral arrangements — all intended to reflect the jungle landscape. At a spacious 490 square feet, they feature large, modern bathrooms and furnished balconies or terraces with private hot tubs.

Upgrade to a more posh Preferred Club junior suite and you'll enjoy extra space (527 square feet), Preferred Club privileges (such as access to a private lounge and personal concierge services) and luxe amenities. The major draw of the club is that you can swim out to the pool from your private terrace.

There are five a la carte restaurants on the property serving seafood, pan-Asian, Mexican and Italian fare; the resort also features a buffet, two grills, a sushi bar, a casual cafe, a pizzeria and a swim-up pool bar. There are three pools, including a waterslide pool for kids, and themed adventures for children ages 3 to 12 at the Explorers Club.

All-inclusive rates at Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica start at $367 or 21,000 World of Hyatt points per night, based on double occupancy.

It's the location, set on an idyllic cove a short walk from Manuel Antonio National Park, that makes this boutique hotel so special. Given the staggering biodiversity of this national park corridor, guests here can expect to view monkeys, iguanas, sloths and colorful birds on the property, whether relaxing by the family-friendly infinity pool or enjoying lunch with their toes in the sand at Playitas Beachfront Restaurant & Bar.

Each of the 37 luxury suites and guest rooms has rainforest, ocean or national park views. Budget-friendly Rainforest Rooms start at 532 square feet, while the fancier and more generously proportioned Ocean View Premium Suites are a spacious 1,055 square feet. All rooms are tastefully appointed with wooden furnishings and a neutral color scheme accented by vibrant tropical fabrics, but it's the glass-walled, furnished balconies with views of the jungle-fringed coastline that are the real highlights.

Adventure and wildlife lure most travelers to Costa Rica, and the hotel offers a range of eco-friendly tours on the property, within Manuel Antonio National Park and farther afield. The hotel's own naturalist guides lead hikes on the 11-acre property and in the national park.

At the casual Playitas restaurant, dine on local and Latin American favorites, such as Turrialba cheese cubes seasoned with local spices and glazed with coconut sweet chili sauce ($18) or a piquant mixed ceviche with lime, avocado and cilantro sauce ($20). The all-inclusive meal plan covers all menu options, should you choose to go that route.

For dinner, live music and spectacular cliffside views await at the more polished Mirador Oceanview Restaurant & Bar, where dishes such as four-hour slow-simmered pork belly ($30) and seared tuna with fresh fennel, orange and parsley salad ($30) showcase regional flavors and produce.

Daily programming includes movie nights, tortilla making, bracelet-making classes and surf lessons, making the hotel (and destination) perfect for adventurous families.

Rates at Arenas Del Mar start at $488 per night, based on double occupancy. The all-inclusive meal plan costs an additional $185 per person, per day.

Hidden in the mountains in the far northwestern corner of Costa Rica, this elegant eco-lodge overlooks active volcanoes, verdant valleys and the waters of Lake Nicaragua. Guests here can feel truly immersed in the sights and sounds of the rainforest while still enjoying all the creature comforts, impeccable service and full-service amenities of a luxurious resort.

From whitewater rafting and volcano hikes (in the company of a resident naturalist) to cooking classes, yoga sessions and relaxation days by the infinity pool, there are plenty of ways to inspire the mind and body.

Nestled among tropical foliage, the sophisticated bungalows and spacious villas (which sleep up to six guests) are anything but generic. They feature hardwood floors, artwork from local artists, handcrafted canopy beds, indoor and outdoor showers, white sofas and large balconies with fire-heated hot tubs where guests can soak in panoramic views.

The on-site El Salto restaurant is a magnet for foodies; it offers contemporary French cuisine with produce from the on-site organic garden, complemented by wines from the extensive cellar.

At the Laka-Tii spa, massages and therapies — which draw on ancient traditions and incorporate natural products — can be tailored as part of an all-inclusive wellness package.

All-inclusive rates at Origins Lodge start at $909 per night, based on double occupancy.

An hour south of Manuel Antonio National Park on the wild and relatively unexplored Osa Peninsula, Kura is one of Costa Rica's most exclusive adults-only resorts. The one-of-a-kind brainchild of an architect and a biologist, Kura was designed with a "tropical minimalism" concept. It's a contemporary riff on the national motto of "pura vida."

The resort features eight hilltop villas that look like they were plucked straight from the pages of Architectural Digest. They feature tropical wooden furnishings, dramatic stone showers, polished black tile floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive furnished terraces — all designed to seamlessly blur the boundary between indoor and outdoor. The Master Suites are huge, at more than 1,500 square feet, and each has a private plunge pool.

Take a dip in the main saltwater infinity pool that provides stunning 360-degree views of Marino Ballena National Park. Then, retreat to a white-cushioned sun lounger and sample inventive cocktails from Diablitos Bar & Lounge (a signature passion fruit mojito, perhaps?). Throughout the property, there are unexpected touches, including an underwater sound system for swimmers, floating flames in the pool and nightly turndown service.

The artful cuisine is fresh and wholesome (ceviche, local catch of the day and bountiful produce grown in the on-site garden). Indulgent spa treatments and daily yoga sessions in the Sky Lounge maintain the theme of rejuvenation found throughout the property.

There are seven pristine beaches to explore, guided hikes to waterfalls and — if you visit from December to April or July to November — the thrilling spectacle of breaching humpback whales offshore.

Rates at Kura start at $788 plus a 13% room tax per night, based on double occupancy. Full-board meal plans are available for an additional $105 plus 23% in taxes per night for two people.

trips to costa rica 2023 all inclusive

Found in one of the most biologically rich regions on Earth, La Paloma is a low-key lodge set on 14 acres of tropical rainforest. Seven bungalows and four rooms overlook the Pacific Ocean from their clifftop perch and immerse guests in the flora and fauna of the jungle.

This is definitely a place to leave the technology behind and get off the grid. Expect warm service (locally grown coffee delivered to your room each morning) and adventures galore.

Naturalist guides lead hikes through Corcovado National Park, and there are snorkeling opportunities just a short boat ride away at the Cano Island Marine Preserve. Equestrians can also fulfill their dreams of galloping along deserted beaches.

Rustic accommodations stay true to the back-to-nature ethos with huge picture windows and wooden furnishings dressed with colorful fabrics.

Between adventures, take time to watch monkeys play in the trees or spot a two-toed sloth as you relax poolside with your favorite book. Note that there is no Wi-Fi in the rooms (only in the clubhouse).

All meals are served family style in the main lodge and are prepared with locally sourced produce, meat, fish and seafood.

All-inclusive rates at La Paloma Lodge start at $1,170 per person for a three-night package. Packages are also available for four- and five-night stays.

On the palm-fringed sands of the Nicoya Peninsula's Playa Samara, this intimate, adults-only resort offers a well-rounded all-inclusive experience. With a boho-chic town and a cool beach scene close by, this isn't the type of vacation where you never leave the property.

Surrounding the attractive, lushly landscaped main pool, all 75 suites are bright and contemporary in style, with a white palette and colorful accents. Modern bathrooms feature double vanities and plush robes, and some have freestanding tubs.

There are 11 accommodation types to choose from, ranging from junior suites (with garden or ocean views) that start at 602 square feet to larger suites with private pools that measure at least 667 square feet.

At the oceanfront Chill 'n' Grill — the only on-site bar and restaurant — a varied a la carte menu features local Tico classics as well as international and fusion cuisine.

Guests can enjoy massages and treatments at the on-site spa. If you're looking for something more active, the hotel can arrange some classic Costa Rican tours and experiences, including surf lessons, canopy tours, visits to Arenal Volcano or Monteverde, kayaking and deep-sea fishing.

All-inclusive rates at Azura Beach Resort start at $420 per night, based on double occupancy.

Where to find the best resorts in Costa Rica

From eco-lodges deep in the jungle to swanky resorts hugging the coastline, Costa Rica has an array of hotels to suit every travel style and budget.

Guanacaste is Costa Rica's most popular vacation destination, with Liberia International Airport (LIR) providing access to the nation's signature experiences without having to fly into the capital, San Jose, and hire a car from there.

Tucked into the northwest corner of Guanacaste, Papagayo Peninsula is where you'll find tony Four Seasons and Andaz outposts. Later this year, the country's first Ritz-Carlton Reserve, the 107-key Nekajui, will debut there, followed by the highly anticipated Waldorf Astoria Residences Guanacaste.

Farther south, the beaches and forests of the Nicoya Peninsula are far less touristed but equally beautiful and rich with wildlife. On the Pacific coastline, Manuel Antonio National Park beckons travelers looking to combine beach and rainforest adventures.

The wildly beautiful Osa Peninsula, where swaths of jungle-backed, pristine shoreline unfurl to the Panamanian border, has become more alluring and accessible thanks to a proliferation of eco-lodges and, for points enthusiasts, the recent opening of the eco-chic Botanika Osa Peninsula, part of Hilton's Curio Collection.

In the highlands, north of San Jose, a string of upscale boutique properties place travelers within striking distance of Costa Rica's famed variety of outdoor adventures, staggering biodiversity and diverse landscapes, including picture-perfect Arenal volcano.

While you may not find a glut of traditional all-inclusive options in Costa Rica as, say, in Mexico or the Dominican Republic , myriad properties — including excellent all-inclusive points hotels — dot the country's Pacific coast (especially the Papagayo Peninsula). Here, you can enjoy amenity-rich, top-tier resorts without that daily nickel-and-diming to spoil your serenity.

Additionally, some of the country's finest eco-lodges in the heart of the rainforest offer meal packages and full-board options, so you can enjoy a true wilderness escape that also allows for some strategic budgeting.

Costa Rica is a stunning breath of fresh air nestled in the heart of Central America. This peaceful country is known for its plethora of tourism opportunities. Those who seek a week of respite at one of the all inclusive resorts in Costa Rica will find beautiful beaches offering idyllic coastlines and an unforgettable atmosphere where they will feel instantly welcomed. Those who hope for a more adventurous getaway will be thrilled with the chance to explore a natural and protected rainforest, where they will encounter extraordinary biodiversity.

Over the last 25 years, Costa Rica has become one of the most desirable tourist destinations in the region. But now, people from across the globe flock there to experience authentic beauty and the friendliness of the local people. Some of the most popular tourist attractions in Costa Rica include the town of Monteverde, which is considered a prime ecotourism destination, and Volcan Arenal, an active volcano that rumbles and erupts quite often. Other excursion options include the Manuel Antonio National Park, where you will see monkeys swinging through the trees, and Playa Samara, a pristine beach.

Costa Rica all inclusive vacations give you a destination where you can have it all. You can learn more about the world around you and the importance of our natural habitat through its many ecotourism opportunities. You can seek out active excursions with an adventure tour package. You also can spend your time relaxing at an incredible resort while enjoying the fantastic views of the jungle above and the beaches below. Whether you are planning a solo trip, or a group adventure, for an inspirational destination, Costa Rica is a wonderful choice.

Getting There

The main airport in Costa Rica is the Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela, which is twenty minutes away from San Jose.  Airport code (SJO)  Most all inclusive resorts are located in Guanacaste/Liberia and this airport is not recommended for guests traveling to the Liberia area. Attractions

The Norther Guanacaste area includes the main tourist centers of Liberia and Santa Cruz.  This area features the Pacific coastline of Costa Rica and is home to white sand beaches and the inviting Pacific ocean. Eco tourism reigns supreme in Costa Rica. Guests can choose from a wide range of exciting excursions such as coastal and mountain horseback riding, diverse hiking areas, recreational cycling through picturesque roads, beaches and mountains, visits to architectural and historic sites, bird-watching, treetop adventures, diving, sport-fishing and more. Travelers are advised to book scheduled excursions through the Costa Rica all inclusive resort tour desk.

AAA Travel Editor, Sherry Mims

Visit Costa Rica with exciting and exclusive AAA Vacations® packages. These carefully curated itineraries offer exciting adventures as well as unbeatable savings and benefits that you won't find anywhere else. AAA’s collection encompasses guided tours, and independent and inclusive vacations that cater to every type of traveler — from traditional to off-the-beaten-path. Whether traveling solo or planning a romantic getaway, you'll find numerous vacation options in Costa Rica.

Trips range from landmarks and farmlands to culture and eco-tours in cloud forests and national parks. In Costa Rica, ecotourism in particular is a popular option for nature enthusiasts seeking sustainable and accessible travel that supports local communities and conserves the environment. These usually enlist local guides and visit lesser-known destinations. However, all will introduce you to Costa Ricans' (aka Tico) hospitality and the “pura vida” (pure life) lifestyle.

As a AAA Member, you can enjoy special benefits and save even more on luxury vacations. To check availability, browse AAA’s available Costa Rica tours online . You can filter by destination, tour, operator and tour type. You’ll find vacation packages like Costa Rica: A World of Nature; Monkeys, Jungles & Volcanoes; and Tropical Costa Rica. Alternatively, you can put together the best of the best with Custom Vacation - Central and South America, where you can see more of the region, learn about new cultures and enjoy world-class service.

Although you can make arrangements in a variety of ways, we recommend reviewing available AAA Vacations® packages and working with a AAA Travel Agent to book prior to your arrival for cost efficiency and peace of mind. Having an agent will take the guesswork out of travel and introduce you to fabulous Costa Rica hotels and the country's natural beauty. Packages are subject to change; read AAA’s Terms and Conditions for complete details, including amenities, Member Benefits and restrictions.

This upscale all-inclusive resort is one of the top-rated in Costa Rica.

  • It takes a long time for clothes to dry
  • Far from the town
  • Paths are difficult to traverse at night

Your stay at Rancho Margot will be worthwhile.

You’ll also have a peaceful vacation since the rooms and bungalows are near nature.

Fresh fish, chicken, fruits, and bread are delectable, too.

  • Stunning estate
  • Decent food selection
  • Polished rooms
  • The food is a hit or miss
  • Need to ride a boat and walk to surf
  • Cloudy and a little rainy weather
  • Mangrove tour
  • Communal dinner

Though it’s hard to reach this lodge, trust us when we say it’s worth it.

Since it’s remote, you can ride a boat or take a small plane.

The wilderness and isolation are what make its location enjoyable.

It’s among the most romantic all inclusive resorts in Costa Rica for couples, with impressive views, accommodations, and foliage.

KID-FRIENDLY VACATIONS: 17 Kid-Themed Hotel Rooms That Will Delight the Whole Family

For example, Il Viaggio Travel is a local Costa Rica operator that creates tailormade experiences for families. Stephanie Sheehy owns Il Viaggio Travel, and her Tico family (i.e., Costa Rican) specializes in creating “Pure Vida” family tour packages. I spoke with Sheehy to get answers to some frequently asked questions about Costa Rica. Read on for her responses.

Is Costa Rica a Good Place for a Family Vacation?

“Costa Rica is a safe country with no army, free education, and very good healthcare,” Sheehy says. “Basically the country is an open-air classroom with tons of wildlife, nature, cultural experiences, gastronomy, and volunteerism.”

Is Costa Rica Safe for Americans?

Costa Rica is safe for everyone, including Americans, but like anywhere in the world, it’s possible to find yourself in a bad situation if you’re careless or go looking for trouble. “But if you travel with local experts, with a planned itinerary, with suppliers that have all the permissions, you will have an amazing and safe experience,” advises Sheehy.

What Is the Cheapest Time to Go to Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has three seasons. The peak times to visit are the holiday weeks of Easter, Christmas, and the New Year. Holiday time is the most expensive of all to travel to Costa Rica. Next is high season, which is the dry season on the Pacific side of the country where most of the all-inclusive Costa Rica resorts are clustered. High Season runs from December to April.

The cheapest time to visit is low season, which is the rainy season on the Pacific side but the dry season on the Caribbean side of the country. “The low season when you can get deals and the lowest prices,” says Sheehy. “Low season runs from May to November.”

Which Part of Costa Rica Is the Best to Stay?

The best location depends on what you’re looking for in your vacation: beach or rainforest, adventure and volcanoes, or culture and food. Twenty-five percent of Costa Rica’s land is protected, and the tiny county is home to five percent the world’s plants and animals.

“We have tons of micro climates between wetland sites, rainforest, dry forest, cloud forest, high-altitude forest,” notes Sheehy. “Name it and we have it. That’s why we have travelers that come at various times of year. Any time they visit, they can do and visit something different.”

As for Costa Rica all-inclusive resorts, however, you’ll find most of them clustered on the Pacific side of the country.

Is Four Seasons Costa Rica All-Inclusive?

The Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo is not all-inclusive. Rates are per room, per night, and there is an additional resort fee of 12 percent of your room rate. The resort fee includes bellmen and housekeeping gratuities, transportation within the Papagayo peninsula, access to daily resort activities, and non-motorized water sports.

However, there is a bed-and-breakfast rate at the resort that includes a daily Costa Rican buffet breakfast for two at Bahia. In addition, Four Seasons Costa Rica does offer fully-inclusive luxury estate homes on Peninsula Papagayo.

We had been to Costa Rica previously and this was by far superior by the extensive destinations geographically seeing most of the country that tourists would be interested in. This coupled with the extremely skilled guide made it superior to what we had seen before. He was so very knowledgeable concerning every possible thing we were witnessing and much more. In addition, he has an extremely entertaining wit. We both had a wonderful time and were amazed at all we got for the $’s." Mr. & Mrs. J.M., Marysville, Washington.

Explore the cloud forest reserve in the heart of Monteverde from up above as you walk among the treetops with a local expert. Embark on a guided walking tour high above the forest floor on a leisurely paced “Hanging Bridges” tour and gain a different perspective of the cloud forest’s unique ecosystem, its mammals, birds, plants and flora. Admire the forest floor bursting with natural wonders, wildlife, and take in the amazing vistas. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to get up close to the indigenous wildlife in their natural habitat as your local expert shares stories of this incredible landscape and the ecology of the cloud forest.

Experience the unique sensation of flying through nature! For nature lovers, the greatest adventure of all is to take a Zip Line Canopy Adventure Tour. Selvatura Adventure Park and Canopy Tour is one of the best soft adventures in Costa Rica. Canopy Tour guides start by outfitting you with the appropriate equipment; then they take you through each of the 12 cables and 19 platforms and through the Tarzan Swing (optional). Selvatura Park is one of the longest Canopy Tours in Costa Rica, and is the only zip line canopy tour located inside the actual virgin cloud forest of Monteverde. Feel pure adrenaline and excitement of flying up to 35 miles per hour, viewing magnificent landscapes. Zip lines ranging from 120 to more than 2,000 feet in length and 60 to 400 feet in height let you experience the cloud forest from a whole new perspective. The tree top canopy tour not only offers a great adventure but also an opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. Trained personnel (accredited by the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism) accompanies you throughout the tour. If you are looking for a fun adventure and amazing rides, this canopy tour is your best choice.

Get a different perspective of the Costa Rican wildlife when you venture into the natural habitat of a dolphin family. With a guide, get a firsthand look at these elegant creatures and watch as they play along the water’s surface. Home to an abundance of animals, keep an eye out for other creatures as well. If you’re lucky, you may even spot some whales or turtles! Afterwards, try your hand at fishing as you cast your line into the blue waters of the Pacific. You’ll also get a chance to swim and snorkel in the warm waves along the coast, getting a closer look at the sea life.

Branches reaching out into the swamp, creatures bustling through the undergrowth, and long-necked birds wading into the cloudy water. The mangroves of Costa Rica are not only essential to the larger ecosystem but also function as an ethereal waterway that will make you feel as if you’ve been transported to another world. Mangrove trees live in swamps where salt water meets fresh water, creating a flourishing home for a wide variety of animals. On your kayak, discover an intimate look at the local wildlife as you gently paddle six miles down the Ora River. Keep an eye out for playful monkeys and explorative iguanas scurrying up the trees. Follow your guide as you coast along the water, making your way along the winding river and taking in the nature all around you.
