Sarasota County rebrands its ‘Siesta Key Breeze’ trolley

The trolley is being rebranded as the Route 77 Siesta Islander.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Sarasota County commemorates the two millionth passenger milestone on its Siesta Key trolley. To mark the special occasion, the county has rebranded the route as the “Route 77 Siesta Islander.”

Sarasota County’s free trolley service launched on Siesta Key in 2017 under the name “Siesta Key Breeze.” Since then, the county’s open-air trolleys have provided rides to residents and visitors traveling between Siesta Key Village, Siesta Beach and Turtle Beach.

In summer of 2022, Sarasota County commissioners approved transitioning the county’s entire transit system to the “Breeze” brand, and the Transit Department rolled out the Breeze Rider app for standard bus routes.

The Transit Department has been installing technology on the trolleys that allows them to work with the Breeze Rider app. Passengers are now able to use the app to view the 77 Siesta Islander’s arrival times and track the trolleys.

The trolleys’ new design with Breeze branding will complement Breeze buses, Breeze OnDemand minivans and future Breeze Plus paratransit vehicles.

Transit team members estimate the two millionth passenger stepped aboard the trolley during the first week of May.

Traveling on the 77 Siesta Islander continues to be free for all passengers, operating daily from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Sarasota's Newtown community is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places

trolley tours sarasota fl

Sarasota's predominately Black neighborhood of Newtown is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places after years of planning and strategic collaboration between Newtown historians and city leaders.

The historic district encompasses Myrtle Street to the north, 19 th  Street to the south, Seminole Gulf Railway tracks to the west, and U.S. 301 to the east and has been the Newtown Historic District since late April. The federal designation adds a deeper layer of historical significance to the area, now set against a growing backdrop of new development stretching across the cityscape.

ICYMI: Colson Hotel demolition talk spurs controversy among Sarasota historians, leaders

The U.S. National Parks Service coordinates the national list, which serves as the official list of the nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Listings in the National Register of Historic Places is a recognition of an area's significance to the history of the community, state, or region.

More: Lynching marker honors 6 victims who were killed in Sarasota-Manatee County by mobs

The city began seeking a historic designation in April 2009 following Newtown community members expressing a strong interest in preserving their prominently Black neighborhood. In a recent media release , Dr. Cliff Smith, a Senior Planner who oversees the City of Sarasota’s historic preservation program, said the designation was a significant accomplishment for all involved.

“Getting to this point truly was a community effort. Residents approached staff 15 years ago and wanted to know the best way to save Newtown’s cultural heritage and showcase its significance. It takes time to document so many historical resources, record personal histories, and present a case that an area meets the criteria for a national register designation," Smith said.

Smith lauded Newtown Alive founder and CEO Vickie Oldham, along with former and current Sarasota city commissioners, for their roles in documenting the history of Newtown and supporting the ongoing preservation efforts.

Opinion: Save examples of early African American architecture in Sarasota before it's too late

Newtown holds Sarasota's 'cultural heritage'

The community of Newtown spurred from the city's first Black neighborhood of Overtown — a small stretch of streets where Sarasota's Black pioneers like Leonard Reid and Lewis Colson once laid the foundation for a bustling Black community in the late 1890s.

Vickie Oldham, a Sarasota native and historian, has been rediscovering and collecting the history of Black residents in the community since being tasked with preservation efforts by the city in 2015. She established the Newtown Alive trolley tour and developed and opened the city's first African-American Cultural Center, now hosting an art exhibition at the historic Leonard Reid Museum about the Civil Rights Movement across Sarasota and Tampa Bay.

Oldham plans to create and introduce Sarasota's cultural heritage to the world, she said.

"Of course, Sarasota is known for its world-class beaches, certainly the arts, the fine dining, shopping, and wealthy visitors, but not cultural tourism, not until this Newtown project began," she said.

Most recently, Oldham spearheaded a cultural heritage campaign to entice a selection committee to select Sarasota as the future site of a multi-million dollar Florida Museum of Black History; however, Sarasota was eliminated as a potential site in late April. The community of Newtown could still be selected as a potential satellite site for a museum or related purpose, she said during a recent interview.

"There are over 600 contributing structures, making it one of the largest historic districts in Florida, and our team provided the ammunition to take this from application to project to approval," Oldham said.

"This historical designation acknowledges Newtown's glorious but painful history and the many contributions of its pioneers to Sarasota's evolution."

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ONE OF THE BEST TIMES EVER My friend and I took the Mystery Tour, Who Killed The Circus Queen? It was amazing! We laughed so hard, sang to the people downtown, and had the best time. I will do this again. No doubt one of the best times ever. Make memories with others. — Patti H.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A MUST EXPERIENCE WHILE IN SARASOTA!!! Oh my gosh! This was the experience was so much fun!!! I love how they guests are also part of play and that it is a musical. (Given prompts and scripts.) I got to be the Bearded Lady, Sofanda! hahaha!!! I also love all the stops we we went to and learned a little history of Sarasota. I highly recommend going on this experience whether you are a local resident or just in Sarasota for a visit. It is so much fun! And the perfect amount of time. Oh, and the cottage and gift shop that we meet at is absolutely darling!!! It has such fun and unique gifts. Thank you for such a great night. — Charli

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Had a great time! We had a great time! We laughed and participated and really enjoyed the tour. So much fun. The “cast” is great, and it moves along through Sarasota in a very fun way.   — Ken J

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Mysterious Murder has never been more fun! What a non-stop entertainment experience! The colorful, musical and often hilarious characters join the tour as you explore Sarasota looking for the dastardly devil who did the deed! Fun. Fun. Fun. — Annette B

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wonderfully entertaining! What an extraordinary evening! We had no idea what to expect but our experience far exceeded any expectation. The actors were skilled and entertaining. The trolley moved about town during the course of the evening and even engaged some of the Main Street diners with a ‘top down’ version of “Downtown”! The plot was intriguing and well-written. Guests were invited to participate and became very engaged… and entertaining ourselves! Fun. Fast-paced. And well-managed by the very capable and quick-thinking ringmaster, Daniel. WE LOVED IT ALL!  — 45kendrac

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Totally blown away Brace yourself for a totally splendid ninety minute treat. The Circus Murder Mystery Musical “Who Killed the Circus Queen” is indeed riveting to be sure. Totally inclusive, this cast of twenty (including you) tackles the “who done it” question and it changes right before your eyes. The professional performers play multiple roles and each and everyone are jewels to be enjoyed. This is truly a delightfully overwhelming theatrical experience! — R. M. Nurmela

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ You get to be part of the show!!! A really fun and interactive way to tour some really interesting unknown parts of this beautiful city!!  — Heather W
