Amazing experience... Taco was an amazing DJ doing a great job of hyping the crowd up. Then Vince came out and killed it just a great set. the stage design was like no other the rotating screens were really cool and it was nice that they put timers up so we knew when Vince would come out. Tyler's performance was just amazing he performed for 2 1/2 hours and he really is a great performer, he performed both old and new songs there wasn't a favorite of mine that he missed. The stage design was so cool with a huge tree for Tyler to stand on. Tyler really cares about his fans he sang happy birthday to this one dude which was so sick. The show was sold out so 2,400 people were all singing the words to his songs which was just amazing the best concert experience I have ever had I have to go see him live again.

Rex Orange County opened with dope beach vibes then later joined in on "Boredom". After Rex finished, Tyler carried the show alone reflecting the energy of the whole crowd. He is a lightening storm on stage. He said that one of his goals on this tour is to see the crowd dance and his beats strongly reflect that sentiment. If you find yourself lucky at one of his shows, do yourself a favor; wear sneakers and don't bring your drink into the mosh pit, you're in for a treat.

I loved every min of his performance.. I loved and appreciated the re-verb of ''tell these black kids they can be who they are'' means so much to us. And I know this isn't his favorite album and It didn't come out as this ''star studded'' album. But there's no one couldn't have said it better than Tyler at this time. So I want to thank him for that. Maybe he will finally be able to score a movie that would be so !!!!

Tyler, the Creator at Coachella 2024: everything you need to know

The Odd Future cofounder takes the stage on Saturday night at Coachella.

Michael Juliano

For Angelenos, Tyler, the Creator is as much of a local cultural icon as he is a global rap superstar thanks to his GOLF WANG store on Fairfax and even his own annual hip-hop fest,  Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival .

But his headlining set at Coachella  is nonetheless a pretty big deal—so here’s everything you need to know about his performance at the Indio music festival .

When is Tyler, the Creator playing at Coachella this year?

He’ll be performing on Saturday, April 13, during the fest’s first weekend, as well as on Saturday, April 20, during the second.

What time will he come on stage?

11:40pm on Saturday, according to the scheduled start time for the first weekend of the festival. There’s always a chance the set could start late, and that time is subject to change for the second weekend, too. Regardless, it’s worth mentioning that there’s a 1am curfew (that the festival has sometimes cruised past).

What will the setlist look like?

We of course won’t know until Tyler actually takes the stage, so until then we can turn to setlist.fm for some hints. “IFHY,” “Tamale” and his breakout hit “Yonkers” are among the staples of his sets. It’s been three years since his last album,  Call Me If You Get Lost , though he did release some bonus tracks last spring; that album factored fairly heavily into his 17-song set at Camp Flog Gnaw last fall, though there was a little bit of something pulled from all of his records.

Has Tyler, the Creator ever played Coachella before?

This will be Tyler’s third time playing Coachella—though his first time headlining. He had a prominent slot at the Outdoor Theatre in 2015, when he notably had some choice words for Kendall Jenner, who was watching from the pit. And then he played the Coachella Stage—the same one he’ll be headlining this weekend—with a Saturday set back in 2018 (though he also briefly appeared a day earlier to guest during Kali Uchis’s set). Also, it’s worth mentioning that Lana Del Rey , who headlines Friday of Coachella, topped the 2017 edition of Tyler’s own Gamp Flog Gnaw Carnival.

How can I stream Tyler’s set?

The live stream schedule  is up for Saturday, and you’ll be able to watch him perform on the Coachella Stage feed below at 11:40pm.

tyler the creator tour schedule

What’s the rest of the weekend’s schedule like?

On the main stage, Tyler will follow No Doubt , who was given an “and…” headlining credit on the lineup . He’ll also be playing after Gesaffelstein on the Outdoor Stage, and at the same time as Orbital at the Gobi tent and Dom Dolla in the Sahara tent. You can check out the full festival schedule for the first weekend below.

Tyler, the Creator fires up Coachella 2024 in playful set with Donald Glover, A$AP Rocky

tyler the creator tour schedule

INDIO, Calif. − Always a maximalist, Tyler, the Creator pulled out all the stops to headline Saturday at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival , literally crashing through a wall to start his set and only upping the energy from there.

The Southern California rapper brought out several musical guests − Donald Glover, A$AP Rocky, Charlie Wilson and Kali Uchis − over the course of his colorful performance.

Before those surprises, Tyler began by playing a video in which he had left his musical career to become a “park ranger,” with a full scoutmaster outfit to match. He then appeared on stage by crashing through a makeshift camper as “IGOR’S THEME” played over the speakers, with a gorgeous desert-themed stage that featured canyon sculptures and an array of graphics and pyrotechnics.

Spotted! Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce dance to Bleachers, Ice Spice at Coachella

Tyler last performed at the festival in 2018, and his set Saturday included lots of music he’s recorded since then, including from 2019’s “Igor” and 2021’s “Call Me If You Get Lost,” both of which earned Grammy Awards for best rap album. He began with several songs from those albums, before playing “BEST INTEREST” and “DOGTOOTH,” which featured an extra verse and an appearance from a goat mascot on stage.

That’s when the surprises started. As “RUNNING OUT OF TIME” began playing, a hooded figure walked onto the dimly lit stage, revealing himself to be Donald Glover. The duo performed a unique version of the song, with Glover providing lovely accompanying vocals. Tyler also joked that he “used to hate” Glover before thanking him for his wide-ranging artistic impacts.

The guests continued when rapper A$AP Rocky − who Tyler also joked that he used to hate − came on stage to perform “Potato Salad,” followed by “Who Dat Boy" from the album "Flower Boy," with flashing green spaceship graphics moving over the desert-themed stage.

Along with the performances at the festival in 2015 and 2018, Tyler’s history at Coachella dates back to a set in 2011 − a performance that Tyler recalled as “terrible” on Saturday. It was the same festival when he and his fellow Odd Future members paraded the festival grounds spraying people with water guns, leading to them being momentarily kicked out by security guards.

Aside from a brief cameo from his longtime pal Jasper Dolphin, there was no grand reunion for Odd Future, the early 2010’s rap collective of troublemaking teens including Earl Sweatshirt and Domo Genesis. (Maybe at Weekend 2?) But Tyler played a handful of songs from his Odd Future days, including “Yonkers,” “Tron Cat” and “She.”

Even without an Odd Future reunion, Tyler had a few more tricks up his sleeve. After playing "IFHY," he walked up to the top of the stage and began playing the piano, where he was joined by Charlie Wilson, a 71-year-old singer-songwriter who’s worked with a litany of famous R&B and hip-hop artists. The pair played a beautiful, piano-heavy version of “EARFQUAKE," as Tyler joked that he's wanted to copy Wilson every time he made a song with vocals.

Tyler then played one of his most popular songs, “See You Again,” with a brief appearance from Kali Uchis to sing the first chorus. The Colombian American pop star − who returned the favor from Tyler’s guest appearance at her Coachella set last year − appeared only briefly, and after her exit, Tyler congratulated her on delivering her first child last month.

Ultimately, with songs spanning across his career, the headlining set delivered on all expectations − the energy even impressing Tyler, who has beefed with some crowds in the past. He mentioned that sometimes Coachella crowds are “dead as hell,” but thanked those in attendance for their energy (and briefly needled Goldenvoice CEO Paul Tollett for the 1 a.m. curfew, which is set by the city of Indio.)

“To everyone who came this evening … I appreciate your attention in watching me this last hour and a half,” Tyler told the crowd, before saying he was ready to wash his, ahem, extremities and go to sleep.

But the tender moment was quickly eclipsed by one final stunt. As he closed with “NEW MAGIC WAND,” with flames shooting into the air from the red-lit stage, Tyler attached himself to cables that lifted him up one of the canyons. He briefly dangled midair from the canyon’s edge and flew off the side of the stage in a blur − a fitting exit for one of Southern California’s most frenetic artists.

Tyler, the Creator performs during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, on April 13, 2024.

One year after his onetime Odd Future collaborator Frank Ocean headlined the Coachella main stage on weekend one (to general bafflement from the public), Tyler, the Creator took a crack at the festival’s Saturday headlining slot with a fierce, visually arresting performance of some of his best-loved tracks.

Throughout the rapper’s roughly 80-minute performance, he held the assembled crowd in the palm of his hand thanks to a potent combination of down-to-earth real talk, a liberal dousing of (typically racy) humor, passionate performance intensity, hard-charging rap flow, eye-catching visuals and a bevy of special surprise guests.

For the performance, which rivaled Lana Del Rey ‘s Friday set in terms of theatricality, the main stage was transformed into a desert vista, centered by a broken-down trailer flanked by two rocky hillsides — one topped by a green tent and adjacent sign that ironically read, “NO CAMPING.” The projection behind the physical set was a thing of ever-changing beauty, hosting such arresting images as a desert rainstorm, a giant silvery moon against a purple sky, a fiery hellscape and a sci-fi tableau complete with flying saucer.

“Thank you for staying. I know you all are tired [after] being here all day, so thanks for staying to watch my tired ass up here,” said Tyler near the beginning of his set. But the amped-up crowd was anything but tired, energized by the rapper’s impassioned renditions of songs like “See You Again,” “EARFQUAKE,” “NEW MAGIC WAND,” “WUSYANAME” and “RUNNING OUT OF TIME.”

The impassioned performance was marked by pyrotechnics in both the literal and figurative sense, as sparks flew not only from the literal stage but between Tyler and his fiercely loyal fans, many of whom could be heard belting out the brainy rapper’s often complex lyrics right along with him.

Check out all the highlights from Tyler’s set below.

An Explosive Entrance

Following an introductory video that showed Tyler wearing a park ranger uniform and explaining how he’d given up his life as a music star to live inside a camper, the rapper materialized onstage in a bit of stage magic. In an explosion of spark and smoke, Tyler (wearing a harness) “crashed through” a wall of the trailer parked in its center and flew through the air before landing on stage, all while decked out in the same ranger uniform seen in the video. It was an attention-grabbing entrance that nicely set the barometer for the remainder of his scorching, no-holds-barred performance.

Childish Gambino Hits the Stage

The “This Is America” singer (a.k.a. Donald Glover) became the night’s first special guest when he came out to duet with Tyler on “Running Out of Time,” a track off the latter’s 2019 album IGOR . At one point, the two dipped and swayed around one another as they harmonized, with Tyler later explaining, “I used to hate that n—a. Seriously. I don’t know why, I gotta go to therapy to figure it out.” He added, “but this n—a put this song called ‘Urn’ out…I was at conflict with myself, like…how could a n—a I hate so much make something so good?” Clearly, that particular beef has been squashed.

About That Jerrod Carmichael Clip...

Early in the set, Tyler made a point of addressing the elephant in the room: A newsmaking segment from HBO’s Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show in which Carmichael revealed his unrequited crush on the rapper before capturing a conversation between the two friends for the show to discuss the moment when Tyler rejected him. “I’m guessing y’all got TikTok and probably seen my homie try to f— me on camera,” Tyler told the crowd. “I looked terrible. I told the n—a no and he said, ‘What about if we filmed it?’ Terrible.”

A$AP Rocky Comes Out to Play

The rapper joined Tyler for the performance of two tracks — “Potato Salad” and “Who Dat Boy” — after which Tyler admitted that once upon a time, like Glover, he also considered A$AP a nemesis: “I used to hate that n—a too…we thought we had beef,” he began. But, he went on to explain, “it was the n—as around us” that caused the issue — “and then me and Rock was like, we got love and now we friends.”

A Nod to How Far He's Come

In one among many moments of candor during Saturday’s set, Tyler reminisced about his first performance at Coachella in 2011, as part of the Odd Future collective. “It was terrible,” he described of the set — after which he and his bandmates were famously booted from the festival by security for shooting Super Soakers at other guests. Clearly, Coachella has forgiven him: In addition to Saturday’s performance, Tyler was also invited back as a performer in 2015 and 2018.

Charlie Wilson Helps Start a Muted 'Earfquake'

The evening’s least-known special guest, 71-year-old singer-songwriter Charlie Wilson, also just so happens to be one of its most lauded, with 13 total Grammy nominations and a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, among other honors. For his cameo, Wilson joined Tyler at the piano (perched atop one of the on-set “mountains”) for a charmingly low-key version of “Earfquake.” Even in his brief appearance, the music veteran’s onstage chemistry with his much younger duet partner was palpable.

Kali Uchis Makes a Brief Cameo

The rising singer emerged onstage for a brief appearance during Tyler’s performance of “See You Again,” a single from his 2017 album Flower Boy , released long before Uchis became a star in her own right. While it was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, it was another welcome show of support from Tyler’s long list of industry friends and collaborators.

A Windblown Exit

After warning that he had only four minutes of performance time left before Coachella’s 1 a.m. curfew on Saturday — a bit of news that caused the crowd to erupt into a round of booing (“B—- don’t boo me…boo [Coachella founder] Paul [Tollett], he put this s— together,” he responded) — Tyler donned a harness once more for the grand finale, a gravity-defying performance of “NEW MAGIC WAND” that saw him caught in a “windstorm” (a coming tempest hinted at earlier in the set) while clutching desperately at some onstage boulders. In a final bit of drama, the rapper soared swiftly off stage just a minute before midnight — a gorgeous bit of stagecraft and a fittingly epic end to the cinematic set.

Coachella 2024: music A-listers hit the desert after a struggle to sell tickets

Lana Del Rey, Doja Cat and Tyler, the Creator will headline but splashy Palm Springs festival has faced slowest sales in a decade

Music’s biggest names head to the desert this weekend for a troubled edition of the Coachella festival, which has seen its slowest ticket sales for a decade.

Lana Del Rey, Doja Cat and Tyler, the Creator will headline, with other acts including Ice Spice, Blur, Grimes, Justice, Reneé Rapp, Vampire Weekend, Victoria Monét and J Balvin also performing.

But while last year’s tickets were all gone within four days, this year saw a slump in interest with 125,000 first weekend tickets taking 27 days to sell and some for weekend two still available. A pass for the first weekend costs $499, while a VIP pass goes up to $1,399.

The underwhelming response comes after a record year for live music in the US. Live Nation, the entertainment company that owns Ticketmaster, reported its biggest ever year with more than 145 million fans attending more than 50,000 events, up 20% over 2022.

Del Rey first appeared at the festival in 2014 and has teased what fans can now expect with her graduating to headliner.

“If all goes well, it’ll be as big and bold as I hope it will be,” she said to Vogue . “Architecturally, it’s going to depend on the structure, and whether I can make it … But I’m really excited about it. I’m excited, so my fans can get excited.”

The star’s close friend Taylor Swift is expected to be in attendance with her football-playing boyfriend Travis Kelce. Rumours that Swift will be performing either with Del Rey or with tourmate Sabrina Carpenter are as yet unconfirmed.

“I am a Coachella guy,” Kelce said to People recently. “I love going to Coachella. I love live music in general. So you might see me pop up over there at some point.”

The weekend will also see the much-anticipated reunion of No Doubt , performing for the first time since 2015.

“It’s gonna be amazing,” singer Gwen Stefani said to Jimmy Kimmel in February . “I’m so excited. And I think what is gonna be hilarious is, I know what’s gonna happen, I’m gonna get onstage and look around and just start like, cracking up because it’s just gonna be like riding a bike. We’re gonna be like: ‘What are we doing? We’re in the future right now, we’re at Coachella.’ It’s gonna be bizarre.”

She also called the performance “a really nice bow to tie on the relationship” between the band members.

Last year saw headliners Blackpink, Bad Bunny and Frank Ocean perform, with the latter artist coming under fire for a chaotic set before he cancelled his second weekend appearance.

In 2015, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was one of the hottest tickets in town, selling out in record time: 40 minutes. AC/DC brought the house down with an electric set. Madonna planted a kiss on Drake on stage. Kanye West made a surprise appearance during the Weeknd’s performance.

Ahead of Coachella’s start on Friday, tickets for the second weekend of the festival are still available (it took a month for the first weekend to sell out), and resale tickets are going for well below face value on StubHub and other secondary resellers in an unprecedented year of sluggish sales — the slowest in a decade.

So what happened?

18 acts we can’t wait to see at Coachella 2024

With more than 100 artists on Coachella’s lineup, here’s who to catch at the festival this year, from Sacramento metal band Deftones to Argentine DJ-producer Bizarrap.

April 10, 2024

After the festival expanded from one weekend to two in 2012, it sold out almost every year since then — from that sub-hour whir in 2015 to four-plus hours in 2022 in its post-COVID return. The following year marked the first time in 11 years that the event did not sell out both weekends. At full capacity, the fest drew up to 125,000 concertgoers a day.

Dave Brooks, Billboard’s senior director of live music and touring, said the dip in sales and fan interest is “a natural off-cycle” for Coachella.

“I don’t buy that the Coachella brand is permanently diminished at all,” Brooks said. “Obviously this was an off-year, [but] it’s hands-down one of the best experiences out there.”

Drake, in a black T-shirt, holds his mic out to the audience at Coachella.

Still, the Coachella craze from about a decade ago has notably faded. Rising prices, a less buzzy lineup than years past and stiff competition in the live music space are all likely to blame.

Although interest has decreased, Coachella ticket prices have not. Before fees, general admission tickets cost $499 to $549 and VIP tickets are going for $1,069 to $1,269.

With lodging, transportation, parking and food expenses each racking up hundreds of dollars, some might think the cost isn’t quite worth the experience.

But after a year when fans shelled out “insane amounts of money” for Taylor Swift and Beyoncé’s concerts, Stig Edgren, a live event producer and lecturer in music industry at UCLA, said the lineup is more likely to blame for this year’s slump.

The internet was divided after Goldenvoice, the festival’s founder and producer, announced the performers in January. Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator and Doja Cat are headlining with special guest No Doubt, and Edgren said the demand for these artists “just isn’t there this year.”

Goldenvoice didn’t respond to The Times’ requests for comment.

Del Rey and Doja Cat both wrapped up tours at the end of 2023 and Tyler, the Creator performed at his Camp Flog Gnaw Festival in November, so fans may have recently seen the headliners at their respective shows and festival appearances.

This year’s artists also don’t have the same rabid fan bases as previous headliners, like last year’s international stars Bad Bunny and Blackpink, and Brooks said the lineup lacks the “commercially successful music stories” that past years have boasted.

Lady Gaga performs at Coachella atop a pyramid of six men, all dressed in black.

Other notable headliners include Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Frank Ocean. The last caused a stir last year with his divisive performance and subsequent cancellation of his Weekend 2 set, which outraged festival-goers and possibly deterred future attendance.

There are also tough competitors in the festival space with flashier lineups than Coachella. Stagecoach , Goldenvoice’s popular country music festival, will take over the same Indio polo grounds starting April 26 with headliners Miranda Lambert, Morgan Wallen and Eric Church. The Lovers & Friends festival will hit Las Vegas a week later, boasting a lengthy list of headliners, including Usher, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg and the Backstreet Boys.

That same weekend is packed with festivals across the country. Headliners Post Malone, Stevie Nicks and Noah Kahan will lead the Lovin’ Life Music Fest in Charlotte, N.C. Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters will take the stage at the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta. Sting, Incubus and My Morning Jacket will perform closer to home in Redondo Beach at the Beach L ife Festival . The Rolling Stones, Chris Stapleton, Hozier, Queen Latifah and more will close out the second weekend of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival .

The saturation in the concert and festival market that came with the spike in live performances after the pandemic may also be causing fan fatigue that could be hurting Coachella’s sales.

Bill Werde, the director of Syracuse University’s music business program and author of the industry newsletter “ Full Rate No Cap ,” said the pandemic affected the promotion of festivals and concerts and fans’ purchasing habits. As the availability of Coachella tickets ahead of its opening weekend shows, fewer people are buying tickets well in advance of events, Werde said.

“People want to look at something like this and want to pronounce the death of Coachella and it’s just too soon,” Werde said. “This is one of the strangest times we’ve ever experienced in live music in the history of the business, which is to say, specifically, this rebound from a period of not having shows for a couple of years. Finding out what the new normal looks like is going to take a couple more years.”

Beyoncé, in a pink sweatshirt embellished with “ΒΔΚ” and denim cut-offs, performs on stage at Coachella.

Werde said the lack of early commitment from ticket buyers coupled with the increased cost of putting on a show creates a “dicey environment for festivals.” Other major fests across the country, namely Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival , have been canceled this year.

Another factor for those hesitant to take the plunge could be the allure of the “Couchella” experience. Thanks to Goldenvoice’s partnership with YouTube, fans can livestream performances from up to six stages from the comfort of their homes. Beyoncé’s 105-minute set attracted a record 458,000 simultaneous global viewers on YouTube in 2018. The festival’s opening weekend amassed 41 million unique viewers.

“When you’re standing at the back of 50,000 people, it’s like, ‘Well, shoot, I can get a better seat at home and then I can do Uber Eats and have seven margaritas and this will be great,” said Tommy Dietrick, founder of the Desert Stars Festival in Joshua Tree.

The target audience for Coachella, the die-hard music fans who once duked it out for tickets, may have also changed their concert-going preferences.

“The consumer may be growing up a bit and may not want to be standing in a mud pit or in the hot sun,” Edgren said. “When you go to Coachella, you’re basically standing up the whole time and it’s an ordeal.”

VAMPIRE WEEKEND

Vampire Weekend is playing Coachella’s first weekend

The long-running indie-rock band will perform on the festival’s Outdoor Theatre stage on Saturday evening.

Dietrick, who also produces music at Joshua Tree Recording Studio, noted that Coachella attendees now get an experience that is removed from the “community element that music is actually really all about.”

“They’ve squeezed too hard on the class of people that were going there to escape and have fun,” he said.

Coachella also seems to attract a different kind of music fan today than it did at its inception and in its early years, when it boasted legendary headliners like Paul McCartney, Prince, Nine Inch Nails and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. With fewer rock bands and more brand partnerships, the festival has been criticized for becoming a “plaything for influencers,” as Werde put it.

Beyond the changes to Coachella’s audience, the music and entertainment industries are also experiencing shifts in terms of what it takes to become famous and build a following. Werde said the music world is facing “enormous fragmentation” because of the volume of musicians creating and sharing their work online. He called this new phase “the age of a thousand niches” and noted that fans’ following of celebrities is getting wider, not deeper.

Taylor Swift doesn't disclose her songs' subjects, but it's easy to connect the dots. "Dear John" puts her former relationship with John Mayer under the microscope.

Taylor Swift at Coachella? These are the 3 sets where our experts think she could appear

Taylor Swift isn’t on the Coachella lineup, but our experts have some ideas as to where the biggest pop star in the world may show up in Indio.

“These are real changes that are happening in the star system, and festivals are dependent on the star system. Festivals create this experience around all these stars and if those stars get smaller, those festivals get smaller. If those stars get fewer, those festivals are going to struggle.”

In its 23rd edition, Coachella seems to be reaching a stabilizing point where it is no longer the hottest ticket of the year but is still attracting a wide audience.

“The form of struggle that Coachella is having is probably a form of struggle that a lot of people would kill to have,” Werde said.

Like fellow long-running music festival Lollapalooza in Chicago, Edgren said Coachella has “settled” into a new phase and will likely continue to experience ebbs and flows with its sales in coming years.

“There’s no way any event or festival like that can sustain that kind of success forever. There’s just no way,” Edgren said. “There has to be dips, some years are slightly better than others. They’re not the new kid on the block anymore.”
