The Hungry Guide: University of Santo Tomas, España Boulevard

  • August 1, 2019

The beautiful and historic campus, the catchy "Go USTe!" chant, and the highly anticipated fireworks and Christmas lights display every Paskuhan season — these are all things that the University of Santo Tomas (UST) is well-known for.

Aside from these, UST also boasts of a food scene that is as vibrant and diverse as life inside the campus. Each street or avenue surrounding the university —Lacson, Dapitan, P. Noval, and España — and even the campus itself, is dotted with a variety of unique eateries.

The Hungry Guide Click The City University of Santo Tomas Metro Manila

Planning to go on a UST food trip? We got you covered. Here are some of the best eateries around the university in no particular order.

You all know the popular saying about how college students turn to siomai rice when money is short. But with Angkong, you won't have to sacrifice taste to save a bit of money. Its fried dumpling, arguably the most popular offering on its menu, has a light and crispy dough and is filled with juicy and flavorful meat. Those who prefer steamed siomai can go for the shark fin siomai or any of its other siomai variants. One serving gets you four pieces of the siomai of your choice and a cup of white rice for less than P60. Angkong now has three branches: one along Asturias Street, the other along V. Concepcion Street, both in Dapitan, and another in P. Noval.

Appetite Evolution

The first thing that you'll notice when you visit Appetite Evolution are the vibrant  paintings on the walls. Every corner of the eatery would look good as a backdrop for your next Instagram picture. Their chicken dishes are the real stars of their menu. The butter chicken and the chicken cheese are some of the most popular dishes they serve. Those who are not chicken fans can opt for the pork katsudon. Each meal will cost you less than P70. Appetite Evolution now has two branches in Dapitan and P. Noval.

ChickenZilla

What sets ChickenZilla apart from all the stores serving flavored chicken chops? The answer is the tenderness of their chicken. It's easy to cut and chew which makes it ideal for those who want to eat their meals fast. Another thing that makes their dishes special is that they don't scrimp on servings. For more or less P100, you'll get huge chicken chops that are always generously sprinkled with the flavoring of your choice. If you're looking for the ultimate bang for the buck chicken chops around the university, ChickenZilla is your best bet. ChickenZilla is at the second floor of the UST Multi-Deck Parking building.

Cion's Tapa Station

ust food trip

Before it became Cion's Tapa Station, it was called Billy's, and its humble establishment could be found along Antonio Street in Dapitan. Students used to rush to Billy's in between classes to buy take outs of their tapa with fried rice — the quintessential Thomasian comfort food. Now, Cion's Tapa Station has a bigger store along V. Concepcion Street but promised to retain their tapa's signature flavor. Their tapa's come in original, sweet, or spicy variants. Each order costs about P65.

Cow Wow Sausage Haus

Although it does have a small room where customers can eat, most of Cow Wow's patrons are seated and served in a bunch of monobloc chairs at the side of the road in P. Noval. But don't let this simple set-up fool you — your P100 could get you extra hefty sausages that can keep you full for hours on end. Some of the most-ordered offerings they have are the Hungarian Sausage and Cheesy German Sausage. Recently, Cow Wow celebrated its ninth anniversary, and with all the students' rave reviews about their food, it's no wonder why they stuck for so long.

ust food trip

Cravings for chicken wings? Look no further than Wing Vibe, which has two branches in Dapitan and P. Noval. For fans of spicy food, the buffalo wings and hot barbecue wings are must-tries. But those who prefer milder options can opt for the garlic parmesan wings. Five pieces of wings with a cup of rice costs P150 — a small price to pay for guaranteed satisfaction.

Lopez Canteen

Lopez Canteen is one of the oldest and most well-known carinderias around the university. And with more than 50 years of operation under their belt, they have already perfected the classic home-cooked meals that everybody loves. But Lopez' edge against all the carinderias surrounding UST is that they have the nicest and warmest staff around. With all the "ganda," "pogi," and "anak" you'll be hearing, you would start feeling as if you're being served meals by doting titos and titas in a family reunion. And that makes their home-cooked food all the more authentic.

Mang Tootz Foodhouse

There are a number of carinderias around UST which proves that they are popular haunts among Thomasians who want quick, cheap, but good food. And another carinderia that is highly popular among the students is Mang Tootz. When dining in this carinderia, customers eat on long tables in an open space, but their food makes it easy to imagine that you are back home eating your mom's home cooking. One of the Thomasians' favorite desserts, the Banana Rhum-A, can be bought here. The Banana Rhum-A is basically a turon cooked with rhum and sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered milk on top. But for those who are feeling a little homesick, this is definitely a must-try. Mang Tootz is located in P. Noval.

Good Munch, which started in a stall across UST's Dapitan gate, quickly caught Thomasians' attention with its fragrant food. You can literally smell their food cooking from across the street, inviting you to take a closer look. The reason why their food smells so good is because they use a variety of spices while cooking which definitely enhances the food they serve. Some of their popular offerings are the rosemary chicken and the beef salpicao. Those who prefer their bacon sweet should go for the bacon and eggs meal. Each meal costs about P100. Good Munch now has a bigger store along V. Concepcion Street in Dapitan.

Kpop, kdramas, and kbeauty — with all of these, there are no signs of the Korean fever in the country dying down. And for some who opt to get their Korean fix with food, 24 Chicken is a godsend. It may be the new restaurant on the block, but its crispy and juicy fried chicken quickly cemented its place as one of the most popular eateries around UST. Another thing that made it so popular is that 24 Chicken accepts deliveries, so those who dream of having freshly cooked chicken delivered straight to their doorstep can now make it a reality. Some of the most ordered flavors on their menu are the Jack Daniels, Yangnyeom, and the Original chicken. 24 Chicken is located in P. Noval.

The Flame

Five new must-visit food spots around UST

THE PANDEMIC turned them into ghost towns for more than two years, but with the lifting of mobility restrictions, the streets of Manila have become bustling again, brimming with students who are looking for a good meal after hours of school work.

While some food shops around UST shuttered for good during the height of the health crisis, new ones have sprung up, waiting to be discovered by Thomasians.

The Flame visited five new cafes and restaurants near the University for you to try on your next food trip.

Mang Larry’s Isawan

The famous isawan in the University of the Philippines Diliman that has been satisfying the street food cravings of the iskolars ng bayan since 1984 has finally opened a branch near the home of the growling Tigers.

Mang Larry’s Isawan is famous for its grilled intestines and special vinegar but it has also become a one-stop for Filipinos street food as it also offers kwek kwek or fried quail eggs, fishballs, squid balls,  chicken balls, cheese sticks, hotdog, chicken pop, dynamite or green chili rolls and instant pansit canton.

ust food trip

As Thomasian alumni, Convencido and her partner have always wanted to open a branch near UST after their graduation.

“There are not many barbecue stalls here in Dapitan, so [in college], we often eat at stalls in P. Campa,” she said.

Convencido found a spot for lease in the Dapitan area, a known eatery haven. The goal, Convencido said, is to show the Thomasian community why Mang Larry’s barbecue is so well-loved.

During the first few days of their soft opening last November, their staff were overwhelmed by the swarm of people who endured long lines to try their best-selling isaw. Compared to other barbecue stalls around the area, Mang Larry’s takes pride in its thorough cleaning process and food preparation. The meat used for its grilled offerings is washed three times, boiled, marinated, skewed, and then grilled.

Unlike the typical Filipino grilled isaw, Mang Larry’s does not have that orange-colored hue in their skewers and its offerings are visibly larger compared to those sold in the streets.

Its best-sellers include isaw manok, isaw baboy, and special isaw baboy—sweeter with a different ruffled texture than the regular isaw baboy. Another crowd favorite is their grilled goto, which is grilled ox tripe, typically found in porridge. To balance out the char, its spiced vinegar perfectly complements the skewers—no onions, cucumbers, nor chillies. It is straightforwardly delicious with just the right amount of spice and a tad bit of sweetness. Some customers even mix them up with rice like soup, or drink it straight from the cup.

Mang Larry’s Isawan is located at 2nd Floor, FuseBox Lifestyle Complex, Asturias St., Dapitan, Sampaloc, Manila

Chingu Dachi Cafe+

Located just a few blocks away from the University, this Korean-inspired coffee shop is not your average minimalist cafe. Chingu Dachi first started as a K-pop collectible store, but owner Ed Margareth Barahan-Acayan has always wanted a collectible store and a coffee shop merged into one.

ust food trip

“Bringing fans together is something I’ve always wanted to do, but I don’t want the cafe to be tagged as ‘K-pop’ cafe, since I also want other people, not just K-pop fans, to enjoy the cafe’s offerings,” Barahan-Acayan said.

Chingu Dachi Cafe+ first opened in Sta. Mesa, Manila in 2020, but moved to Sampaloc, Manila last December.

Setting foot at the cafe was like a K-pop lover’s dream. From the left part, you could see its stores selling K-pop albums, lightsticks, photobooks, photocards, lightsticks, among other merchandises. On the right side was its cafe, warmly welcoming with a hint of bold colors, contrasting the typical white and wood concept typically found in coffee shops nowadays.

ust food trip

The Korean vibe of the place was definitely not an upfront K-pop cafe, just like Barahan-Acayan envisioned. It is a cozy hangout hideaway from the loud and busy streets in Manila.

Chingu Dachi Cafe+’s menu consists of a play with Korean fusion such as Korean pork steak, kimchi fried rice, and doenjang (fermented soybean paste)  pasta, quite similar in taste to truffle pasta, with an earthy and warm taste. Its menu also includes the usual food served in cafes, such as waffles, seasoned potato wedges, salads, and pastries.  For K-pop lovers, the restaurant also offers the famous Inkigayo sandwich, which is commonly seen being eaten by K-pop idols in music bank shows.

The cafe’s drinks vary from iced and hot coffee, ice blended, soda pops, fruit teas, milk tea, non-coffee, and smoothies. There is definitely a drink to try for everyone.  Busan seasalt milk tea is a unique experience, with its floral taste and a hint of saltiness, while its ice-blended white mocha was smooth and creamy, with a subtle taste of coffee, perfect for those who’d like coffee minus the palpitations and all-nighters.

ust food trip

To wrap up the gastronomic experience in Chingu Dachi Cafe+, its cube cakes are the perfect cakes to munch, which are also convenient to take home with their compact packaging.

The ‘+’ in Chingu Dachi Cafe+ remains true to its brand—they offer more than just a quick coffee fix or the latest K-pop collectibles. The overall vibe of the place, together with its food, is definitely worth coming back for.

Chingu Dachi Cafe+ can be found at 2/F 1655 Piy Margal cor. Don Quijote St., Sampaloc, Manila

La Frontera

As you wander through Asturias Street in Dapitan, your eye may easily be caught by the Filipino-Mexican restaurant La Frontera. The interior is as festive as the exterior that made it stand out. It’s a scene straight out of a Mexican street celebrating a fiesta.

La Frontera, literally meaning “the border,” wasn’t the first attempt of the five owners—all of whom met at college—at serving Mexican food. It was their food stall in Taft called By the Border, which only served the usual Tex-Mex fare. As the fad of food parks faded, the stall also closed in 2017.

ust food trip

Justin Chong, a co-owner of La Frontera, said that when they were planning to revive the concept, innovation became their main consideration. That was when the idea of fusing Mexican and Filipino cuisine came about. La Frontera officially opened in July 2022.

All the Mexican favorites are here, of course—nachos, cheese quesadillas, beef tacos. But the highlights of the menu, developed by chefs and co-owners Don Carpio and Cheesy Adao, are the novel dishes that blur the borders between Mexican and Filipino flavors. Kare-kare is reworked into a burrito—stuffed with rice combined with a rich peanut sauce, then wrapped in a warm tortilla with tender pieces of beef and vegetables. It is eaten with bagoong on the side, a tiny detail that completes this nod to a classic. There are tacos and quesadillas filled with adobo, tasting deep of soy sauce but nuanced by a hint of spice.

Even brownies get their twist. Who knew that chocolate and chili worked together? Don’t skip on the drinks, too. La Frontera is one of Manila’s few places to get horchata, and its house blend iced tea is to come back for.

ust food trip

All the flavors at play are as alive as the fiesta interiors of La Frontera. But if there is a Filipino-Mexican commonality that La Frontera celebrates beyond cuisine, it is the generosity of the people. The place is animated by light conversations from group-filled tables and the service with a smile. It is clear that good food and company are the life of this restaurant, and they are happy you are here.

It is often said that Mexicans and Filipinos are brothers, and at La Frontera, it is obvious why.

Experience La Frontera at 1240 Asturias St., Sampaloc, Manila, 0960 297 9948.

Las Tres Marias

A recent addition to P. Noval Street’s restaurants is Las Tres Marias, which opened in October of last year.

Run by owners Diana dela Cruz and Genesis dela Cruz, Las Tres Marias is the couple’s first branch from the tiny space in their home in San Juan. They have been in business for more than five years, starting as an online food business in August 2018, making them one of its pioneers when it was not yet commonplace.

ust food trip

“Who are three Marias?” is a valid question to ask, especially upon seeing the huge cursive sign in the restaurant’s pink-clad exterior.

“I named it so because we have three daughters,” chef Diana dela Cruz said.

“We started when I gave birth to our third daughter, Soleil.”

Her lasagna started to gain a reputation among her officemates, who often asked for it on special occasions. Her repertoire of dishes has expanded since then, serving cuisines ranging from Italian and Spanish to Filipino. This eclectic mix of cuisines may seem incoherent to the palette, but it is not.

In the French-inspired space awash in a combination of pastel pink and blue, one tastes a range of flavors and textures. The famous lasagna, sweet from the bechamel and sour from the meaty sauce, complements well with the fried chicken that kicks with spice.

ust food trip

The brick oven pizzas are exceptional—generous on the tomato sauce and mozzarella which might ooze out if one does not bite carefully enough—and one cannot help but wonder how the chef achieved the finely charred crust without an actual brick oven. The grilled chicken is smoky to the bone and is a filling meal for students.

Visit Las Tres Marias at 1177 P. Noval Street, Sampaloc, Manila.

Manila Cafe

A few steps away from UST’s P. Noval gate is the home of this newest cafe.

Manila Cafe, founded by PJ Bancosta, has that cozy ambiance unique compared to other stores—including its displayed life-sized Ironman generation suites and unlimited wifi. The place is perfect for those looking for a study or hang-out place.

ust food trip

Marketing director Aramis Nerecina shared that Manila Cafe started as “Sampaloc Cafe” in 2021. According to him, he and his co-owners started the coffee shop because of the hobby of making coffee they developed during the early years of the pandemic.

Instead of continuing to order from other shops, he said: why not start our own? This is when they decided to expand their business and rebrand it as Manila Cafe in 2022.

Among its bestsellers are the coffee cold brew, iced white mocha (made of coffee and white chocolate syrup), and matcha latte (a concentrated tea made with green tea ‘matcha’ powder and steamed milk). All its beverages are created with distinct syrups and professional baristas who improve its customized drinks. Manila Cafe’s pizza, its main food, is named after places in Manila such as Intramuros, Paco, Malate, and Quiapo.

The place is appealing not only to the taste buds but also to the sense of sight. The three life-size Ironman figures will surely catch your attention and somehow bring you back to your childhood. According to Nerecina, a Marvel fan, the display came from his personal collection.

ust food trip

While the Iron Man figures is one of the attractions of the cafe, its owners are planning to remove the Marvel concept in the future and replace it with decorations that will show the aesthetics of the capital city while maintaining the cozy vibe they introduced to the public.

Nerecina admitted that opening the cafe involved taking risks as the UST decided to resume onsite classes gradually. But the risk was worth it as Manila Cafe has become a popular hangout among Thomasians.

“We love making guests comfortable […] it’s a good feeling for me,” Nerecina said.

Try Manila Cafe’s coffee and pizza at Annie’s Place Building, 1015 P. Noval Street Sampaloc, Manila. F – Eugene Paul Lorenzo and Johanna Leelan Gee with reports from Edrisse Dela Cruz

U-BELT FOOD TRIP #2: MUST-GO-TO RESTOS IN ESPAÑA

On our last food trip, we went inside the historic peace arch and went around mendiola to look for five of the most iconic food stops we could find. this time around, we are going to take a walk around the streets of españa and try to find the best restos to fill our hungry tummies..

Banner image

Banner art by Divine Grace Espina

España is home to Asia’s oldest university, the University of Santo Thomas (UST), and tons of other educational institutions in the metro. This iconic go-to is always filled with a bustling crowd of students rushing to get to class on time. But España, together with its connecting streets such as Dapitan, P. Noval, P. Campa, and many more, offers so much more than what meets the eye.

España is, more often than not, the first place many students would think of when we say “food trip”. And true enough this street is filled with different kinds of food — name it and España has it. This is why making a list of the best restos in España is such a nightmare and those who’ve spent most of their school life around this famous street would definitely agree.

So, without further ado, here are some of España’s must-go-to restos.

It would be a crime to not put Mang Tootz on this list. Mang Tootz is arguably the most well-known karinderia near UST and any Thomasian could attest to how delicious their food is. And of course, when we say Mang Tootz the first thing that comes to mind is their iconic Banana Rhum-a. Mind you, this is not your typical turon , Banana Rhum-a is made special not just because of the langka , pineapple juice, and sesame seeds but the sauce also has rum, yes rum. This pineapple-rum sauce is definitely a burst of flavor, so if ever your near P. Noval make sure to pay Mang Tootz a visit.

DIMSUM TREATS

Every school has its own siomai house and for some reason, siomai has become a traditional must-have for any student. And who would blame them siomai-rice just hits different. But for the students near Sampaloc, Manila, Dimsum Treats is definitely one of the best. What makes Dimsum Treats so special is their satisfying, yet affordable, serving of siomai drowned in soy sauce and chili. This resto is located in Juaning St. but worry not because they also opened several branches all over Sampaloc!

LOPEZ CANTEEN

UST is the oldest university in Asia and comes with it are food stops that are also historic. One of these historic eateries is Lopez Canteen. Established in 1960, Lopez Canteen has been serving students for more than 50 years already. So, if you are feeling homesick and tired of fast food, then Lopez Canteen is definitely the place for you. They offer homecooked meals which vary every day — so take a seat and enjoy the homey vibes.

COW-WOW SAUSAGE HAUS

If you are looking for something other than your typical silog, then Cow-Wow Sausage Haus got you covered! They offer different kinds of sausages like German, Hungarian, Schublig, Polish, Beef Bangers, and Chicken all served in silog -style. You even get to choose what to pair it with: rice, mashed potatoes, egg, bun, or spaghetti. It might sound fancy but this sausage house is guaranteed to be student-budget friendly. Chow down on a silog with a twist and make sure to visit Cow-Wow Sausage Haus located in P. Noval St.

ICHILL THEATER CAFE

This list won’t be complete without at least one study spot. One of the best places to relax after a long day at school or to catch up on some readings is IChill Theater Cafe. A thomasian’s campus chibog map.

Written by Edriel Pascua Graphics by Keithleen Dicon

Thomasians aren’t only known to brave the daring floods of Espa ñ a but also the wonderful variety of food offered all around the campus. From cafes to eateries, a Thomasian will never turn down a food trip whether it be a fancy meal or a local silog dish.

The time-tested University of Santo Tomas has a lot to offer in its Carpark and Quadricentennial Pavillion, but there’s certainly a lot more choices to choose from beyond these two. Surrounding the university are the streets of Espa ñ a, Padre Noval, Dapitan, and Lacson, and they all have food places great enough you’ll be willing to walk from corner to corner even under the heat of the blazing sun.

12. Dimsum Treats

Every Thomasian knows the adage: ang Tomasinong gipit, sa siomai rice kumakapit! However, don’t wait for your budget to be squeezed before trying this meal. There are a lot of shops that offer siomai rice, but no other comes close to Dimsum Treats’ four, large siomai.

Tip: try their chili sauce! It won’t fail spice lovers out there.

11.   Cafe Churro

Finally, there’s a churro shop near, and the place is even Instagrammable! You might have to look around for the place in an alleyway, though. They serve a variety of churros like the classic, coated, or even with an ice cream! Coffee (served either hot or cold) and smoothies are also available.

They also offer other varieties of sisig like chicken, bangus, and squid.

Mica Dela Rosa

Jul 22, 2014   •   Mica Dela Rosa

Often, it’s followed by a harder, facepalm-inducing answer: “kahit saan.”

And even though many Thomasians have the convenience of dining at fast food joints in the Carpark building, there’s a great deal of food choices beyond the walls. So whether you’re a student on a tight budget or a food tripper on the hunt for another epic adventure, here are 8 picks for easy-on-the-pocket and delicious eats around USTe.

8. DIMSUM TREATS

Dapitan St. / Asturias St., Sampaloc, Manila Operating hours: 8am to 2am Price range: 55 – 75

As the saying goes, “ang Tomasinong nagigipit, sa Siomai Rice kumakapit.” Countless stalls may have mushroomed around the university, but Dimsum Treats’ siomais come in larger (and yummier) proportions that ordering extra rice becomes inevitable. Choose from their Special Siomai, Japanese, Chinese Chicken, Quail Egg, Sharksfin, and Mushroom varieties and pair ‘em with Yang Chow fried rice for a definitely sulit meal.

Tip: Unless you’re fond of extreme spiciness to the point where your lips start swelling and you’re running to get a gallon of milk, NEVER ever say yes when they offer chili sauce on your meal. Seriously, they must have been using California Reapers for that.

7. SANTORINI

981 P. Noval St., Sampaloc, Manila Operating hours: 9am to 9pm Price range: 100 – 200

Everything screams Kpop! the moment you step into this small resto—from the boy band and girl group posters and fan messages covering the walls, the TV airing Korean music and variety shows, to the distinct aroma of pepper paste looming in the air and clinging onto your clothes. Truthfully, almost everything off Santorini’s Korean-Japanese menu is authentic, worth every peso with the huge servings, and oh so perfect while spazzing over your bias groups and favorite K-drama series with friends.

6. UNIVERSITY SCOOP

981 P. Noval St. cor. Delos Reyes St., Sampaloc, Manila Operating hours: 11am to 9pm Price range: 50 – 150

#UScoop’s neon and black-and-white interior exudes a cheery and vibrant vibe, making it a favourite hangout spot for Thomasians. This ice cream parlor and restaurant serves old school sundaes, parfaits and banana splits, as well as burgers, pasta, sandwiches, and Pinoy rice meals in student-friendly prices.

But in case you need some cheering up after your grades have taken their toll in an agonizing exam, the Growling Tigers lost a game in the UAAP (bounce back, guys!), or your love life has turned out to be more bittersweet these days, it’s also a great place to melt your hell-week heartbreaks away.

5. S.R. THAI CUISINE

1229 V. Concepcion St. / 965 P. Noval St., Sampaloc, Manila Operating hours: 9am to 9pm Price range: 75 – 150

Whenever you’re feeling a bit more adventurous to explore other cuisines or your craving for Thai food is just kicking in, better head over to this obscure restaurant which was popular among students and foodies during the 90s. With bestsellers consisting of the savory Pad Thai, Bagoong Rice, and SR Seafood Fried Rice, there’s no surprise if you leave the place with a happy and heavy tummy.

4. LOVELITE

1224 Asturias St., Sampaloc, Manila Operating hours: 7:30am to 8:30pm Price range: 25 – 55

I could think of only one reason why the place is called Lovelite: they’ve got food you’ll love at a very lite price. This eatery is famous among on-the-go Thomasians for their cheap footlong, burger steak, and bacon combo rice meals, usually served with a heart-shaped sunny side-up and generous, generous helpings of gravy. Rushing to get copies of your prof’s new set of readings? Lovelite offers photocopying, bookbinding, and ring-binding services too. Less hassle, yay!

3. ICHILL THEATER CAFÉ

1125 Dos Castillas St., Sampaloc, Manila (behind McDonalds Lacson) Operating hours: 10am to 2am Price range: 50 – 120

This one of a kind café is a great spot to study or chillax especially if you’re into arts, films, and theatre. Take comfort in the cozy atmosphere, Broadway hits on their playlist, friendly baristas, and complimentary treats on drinks. And when you crack a joke, share a quote, or perform a song, poem, or speech at the open mic corner, they’ll reward you with a free snack. How cool is that? At some days, the room upstairs transforms into a movie house. It can also be rented out for group meetings, birthday parties, and other small events– even your own concert.

2. SISIG EXPRESS

V. Concepcion St. / Dapitan St. cor. Dos Castiillas St., Sampaloc, Manila Operating hours: 8am to 10pm Price range: 55 – 70

When visiting Sisig Express, it doesn’t matter if you’re really hungry or not. You’ll always find yourself getting excited over the sound of chicken/pork sisig sizzling in platito-sized charcoal plates. Their Adobo Flakes is a must-try too!

1. MANG TOOTZ FOOD HOUSE

1135 P. Noval St., Sampaloc, Manila Operating hours: 8am to 9pm Price range: 60 – 70

So what’s the most iconic food spot in the area? Ask any Thomasian and you’ll probably get the same answer: Mang Tootz! The legendary eatery is frequented by students, alumni, and food trippers who can’t help but come back to its good food and warm, efficient service. Try the all-time favorites such as Inihaw na Liempo, Sisig, Breaded Chicken, and Chicken Kebab, all ensured to be in excellent quality by Mang Tootz himself .

Afterwards, make sure to end your hearty meal with their signature Banana-rhuma (sells at P10 for 3 pieces), which are caramelized mini turons sprinkled with sesame seeds, milk powder and cinnamon. Yum!

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

ust food trip

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

Food and Footprints

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

' src=

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

' src=

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!
