The best times to visit Bali based on your travel goals

With awe-inspiring scenery, dense layers of culture, plenty of sun, surf and sand, and balmy temperatures year-round, Bali calls out like a beacon to adventurers, sun-seekers and travelers who like to truly immerse themselves in the countries they visit. Whatever your travel tastes, you'll find rewarding things to see and do in Bali at any time of year.

The dry season, from April to September, is the most enjoyable time of the year for outdoor activities, including basking on beaches, hiking, surfing, sailing, diving and canyoning. Visit during the wet season (November to March), and you'll experience frequent downpours, but there's good surf on the east coast, and you can still enjoy the outdoors, especially in drier areas in the east and north of the island. Temperatures in Bali don’t vary much from season to season, hovering between 28°C and 32°C (82°F to 90°F) year-round, though it's often cooler in mountain areas. Whatever you're looking for in Bali, here are the best times to come.

The high season (July–August and December) is the best time for festivals and partying

The high season in Bali coincides with the traditional summer vacation season in Europe, America, and Australia in July and August. It's the height of the dry season and the peak time for surfing on the west coast at the breaks around Canggu and Seminyak . Bali's original beach hub, Kuta , can be mobbed at this time of year, as many travelers come here specifically for the party season.

Most parts of Bali are inundated with visitors in summer, as tourists come to sample the island’s many delights and enjoy some of its most colorful festivals. Indonesia celebrates its independence from colonial powers on August 17 with plenty of pomp and fanfare. Expect entertaining parades and street parties in the bigger towns.

The period around Christmas and New Year also sees a large influx of travelers seeking a reprieve from cold northern winters. Many hotels, restaurants and other venues organize special dinners and entertainment to mark the festive season. New Year’s Eve is particularly memorable, with spectacular fireworks at midnight to help you rock in the new year in style. Key events to look out for are the Pemuteran Bay Festival, Penglipuran Village Festival and, of course, New Year’s Eve celebrations.

High season means high prices and pressing hordes in tightly-packed tourist areas; for a quieter experience, seek out more remote spots such as Nusa Penida and Pemuteran .

The shoulder season (April–June and September–October) is best for adventurous travelers

The shoulder season in Bali falls at either end of the dry season, when the weather is either improving after the rains or getting slowly wetter after the dry months. Things are quieter without the summertime crowds, and the weather is normally still dry enough for outdoor activities. However, the two-week Easter spring break can get very busy in tourist areas such as Kuta and Legian .

May marks the surfing season in full swing on the west and south coasts, and rafting, trekking and spelunking beckon adventure sports fans.

As rain showers in October are more frequent than in the dry summer months, plan to spend some time indoors visiting temples, museums and cultural institutions in Ubud , Denpasar , and other centers for Balinese culture. Top international events in October include the  Ubud Village Jazz Festival  and the  Ubud Writers and Readers Festival .

The low season (January–March and November) is best for budget travelers

Bali’s low season coincides with the rainiest months of the year, and this can be an unpredictable time for outdoor activities. The crowds have decamped back home, and the island is returning to a more relaxed vibe, but there's still decent surf on the east coast at such legendary locations as Padang Padang, and the weather is still warm. Accommodation prices fall considerably, which is great news for budget travelers.

At the end of January or the start of February, Chinese New Year celebrations feature typical Balinese elements such as traditional percussion bands and dancers dressed as the mythological lion-like creature Barong.

The festival of Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, moves with the lunar calendar but frequently falls in March. This is a culturally fascinating time to visit Bali, but after the colorful parades of ogoh-ogoh puppets the night before the festival, the Day of Silence itself can be a tricky time for visitors as everything closes, transport ceases, and nobody is allowed out on the streets.

Understanding the Balinese calendar

Note that religious festivals such as Galungan and Kuningan are scheduled according to the Balinese 210-day pawukon calendar. This means they happen roughly every seven months, according to the Western calendar. Dates for village festivals are not always set in stone either, and the timing of the Nyepi festival is dictated by the lunar saka calendar, meaning the date changes every year. If you’re planning a trip around a festival or event, check the precise dates before you book your flights.

The Ultimate Bali Itinerary: How To Plan The Perfect Trip To Bali

Planning a trip to Indonesia and looking for the best Bali itinerary? Whether you’re only spending 5 days, one week, 10 days, or two full weeks, I guarantee this Bali trip travel guide will be extremely helpful!

Bali is truly one of my favorite destinations in the world and a place I’ve called home several times. But planning a trip to Bali can be a bit intimidating as there really are so many amazing places to explore!

There’s no need to wonder why Bali has become one of the world’s most visited and popular vacation hotspots. It has jaw-dropping landscapes, lush rice terraces, stunning beaches, serene temples, cute monkeys, scenic waterfalls, wild nightlife, and unforgettable sunsets.

Bali really does have a little something for everybody, and I guarantee that if you follow this Bali travel itinerary, you will fall in love with this island just as much as I have!

While tourism in Bali has exploded in recent years due to the popularity of Instagram, it definitely lives up to the hype because there is a LOT more to this island than what you see on social media. Don’t let the annoying Bali IG couples + IG influencers deter you from planning a trip here because it is a must-visit destination in Southeast Asia!

Tip: Add something unique to your Bali travel plan by choosing to go glamping in Bali  instead of staying at a hotel.

The Ultimate Bali Itinerary

Whether you’re only spending a few days, two weeks, or even an entire month, this Bali Itinerary guide will go into loads of detail about what to expect about visiting this island, the best things to do, what to pack for Bali, when to go, insider travel tips, and loads more.

So without further ado, let’s get started!

10 Days in Bali Itinerary

WHAT ARE THE BEST MONTHS TO VISIT BALI?

Bali is an incredible destination to visit year-round, and if you’ve only got limited time off work, I would say book that ticket no matter what! Being located in Southeast Asia, the weather in Bali is exceptionally tropical, so you can expect hot and humid temperatures pretty much every day, but there are two main seasons – the wet and dry months.

The rainy season in Bali is from October to April, and the dry season is between May – September.

That said, traveling to Bali during the rainy season is NOT an issue. I LIVED in Bali in December & January (known as the wettest months of the year), and I barely even noticed the rain.

Yes, some days were worse than others, but more often than not – every day was beautifully sunny blue skies and perfect beach weather.

Uluwatu - Bali Itinerary Travel Guide

According to Bali.com, “ The best time to come to Bali is April, May, June and September, just before and just after high season. It’s still the dry season, it’s slightly less humid, and room prices and villa rentals can be 30-50% cheaper than during high season. Many shops offer sales and promotions, restaurants are less crowded in those mid-season months, and in general, Bali is a bit more relaxed. October is not too bad either, still much less rain than November (usually, check the rainfall chart).”

I agree with that statement for sure, but traveling to Bali during Christmas time & New Year’s Eve can be an incredible experience. I spent Christmas Day lounging at a day club and absolutely loved it!

Travel Itinerary for Bali

IS BALI A DANGEROUS PLACE TO VISIT?

Absolutely not! Bali is completely safe to visit, and I’ve honestly never felt like I was in any danger while there. While just like a vacation to anywhere in the world, you want to make sure you’re traveling wisely and acting responsibly.

The only dangerous or unsafe behavior I’ve heard of is from “motorcycle thieves or purse-snatchers.” These are people that will try and grab purses or backpacks from people while riding on the back of a motorcycle. But as long as you pay attention to your belongings, nothing bad will happen.

What I will  say in this section, though, is that you NEED to be extremely careful if you decide to rent a scooter in Bali. I’d say that’s actually the most dangerous thing on the island! I drive very cautiously when riding my moto , and I’ve never been in an accident (knock on wood), but I’ve had several friends end up in the hospital with serious injuries.

Nevertheless, I wouldn’t let that stop you from enjoying the feeling of exploring the island on two wheels. The scooter rides through rice terraces are one of my favorite things about living in Bali, and it’s a great, cheap, and efficient way to experience Bali. Just make sure the person driving is confident and skilled. You should also avoid driving during peak traffic hours.

Best Bali Trip Travel Insurance

I never travel anywhere without booking a travel insurance policy . This is essential for all Bali visitors!

So I’ll repeat…

Please, do NOT visit Bali WITHOUT Travel Insurance!

It’s unfortunately all too common that people come to Bali, get into a scooter accident, and end up needing a lot of medical attention. This, as you can imagine, is not cheap, and while the Bintangs and good vibes are, don’t expect medical treatment as a foreigner to also be of great value! These bills will add up, and sometimes they won’t even operate before they know you’re covered.

I’ve had at least 4 friends now get in serious accidents, but only half of them had travel insurance to cover their needs. Trust me – especially if you plan on driving or getting on the back of a moto (which you most likely will), you’ll want peace of mind to make sure you’re covered.

You also need to consider other issues that could arise, such as theft, boat sinking or water damage, or catching dengue. Trust me when I say these warnings aren’t to scare you, but real-life examples I’ve seen during my time in Bali.

Bali Itinerary

I highly recommend HeyMondo due to its extensive range of cover for all situations and trip lengths. Their fair pricing and handy app allow you to manage any claims within the app and access free assistance online. This means you don’t need to rack up an expensive phone bill in Indonesia, where the charges are steep!

Nowadays, I would never travel without insurance again, especially after hearing so many of those (expensive and dangerous) horror stories from other travelers I’ve met. So, whether you need a single trip cover for two weeks in Bali or an affordable annual cover for multiple trips worldwide, be sure to buy your travel insurance before you travel, knowing that HeyMondo has your back.

Still, planning your trip? You can always get a no-commitment travel insurance quote now, so you know how much extra to budget for your vacation!

WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR A TRIP TO BALI? A BASIC PACKING LIST

One of the things I love about Bali is that you really don’t need to bring all that much — especially if you’re just on a quick 10-day or two-week holiday. Also, shopping in Bali is fantastic. You’ll want to bring back a separate suitcase filled with souvenirs and clothing.

Here are a few items I think are essential for your travels to Bali!

Ubud Rice Terraces - Bali Itinerary

  • Clothing: You’ll want a couple of pairs of shorts, swim trunks, t-shirts, sandals, and comfortable adventure shoes. Add one or two fancier outfits for dinners or nightlife too. Everyone will have different styles or preferences, but my main clothing tip would be to keep it light. Quick-drying clothes will be helpful, mainly because you will sweat up a storm.
  • Portable charger: Anker PowerCore Portable Charger  is one of the smallest and lightest power banks available. I carry this with me everywhere I go because I’m using my iPhone a bit more than I care to admit! Well, when you’re exploring Bali, you’ll definitely want a portable charger.
  • Microfiber towel: This Rainleaf MicroFiber Towel  is budget-friendly and stylish. Plus, a quick-drying towel is a must for visiting Bali. You’ll find yourself hiking, sweating, and swimming often – and you’re really going to want one of these. I just bought one of these myself, and it’s the #1 best seller on Amazon!
  • Quality sunscreen: The sun is super intense in Bali, and you’ll be out in the sun often during this Bali itinerary. So, make sure you buy some decent sunscreen before you get to Bali because it costs SO much more out there for some reason. I personally use this Neutrogena Lightweight & Water Resistant SPF,  and I love it!
  • Mosquito repellent: Unfortunately, mosquitos are flying all over the place in Bali. And you really want to protect yourself when you go on long adventures. I recommend this Mosquito Repellent Bracelet . If you’re just shopping around Seminyak or chilling in Canggu, I wouldn’t worry too much, but if you’re out in nature, definitely put some on!
  • Go Pro: The GoPro Hero 11 is my favorite adventure camera, and I’m truly blown away by the hyper-smooth stability that the GoPro Hero 11 offers. You can take some epic images with this, and it’ll also be perfect for all the underwater or snorkeling shots you’ll want. For the aspiring content creators out there, combine it with a TELESIN Dome Port  for some unique, fun, and creative shots!
  • Waterproof phone case: No matter what kind of phone you have, you really want to protect it during your trip. This itinerary is pretty active, and if you don’t have a supportive phone case, like the JOTO Universal Waterproof Phone , I bet you’ll be paying for some phone repairs!
  • Power adapter: Last but certainly not least, this Universal Power Adapter  is just a basic travel essential that you’ll want to pick up one of these before your trip to Bali. I personally love this one and would definitely recommend it!

THE ULTIMATE BALI TRIP ITINERARY | PLANNING A TRIP TO BALI

Alright, let’s dive into my guide for my extensive Bali holiday itinerary!

10 DAYS & TWO-WEEKS IN BALI ITINERARY

The way I’ve set up this 10-day itinerary is that it’s all focused on Bali. But if you have a full two weeks, I’ve included a trip to the Gili Islands too.

I think it’s best to do it this way because when you book round-trip boat transfers to Gili Trawangan, you can have them drop you off directly at the airport, depending on your schedule. You can book day trips or rent scooters to explore nearby attractions when you’re based in one place for a bit longer.

One thing I think is important about traveling around Bali is avoiding checking in and out of hotels and Airbnb’s every couple of days. That’s why I’ve put at least 3+ nights in each place, and you’ll get a better feeling for the area.

The full itinerary is below, but here’s an overview of my recommended route so you can start planning:

  • Uluwatu (3 Nights)
  • Canggu (3 Nights)
  • Ubud (4 Nights)
  • Gili Islands (3-4 Nights for Two-Week Itinerary)

You might not have the time, energy, or money to do everything on this Bali itinerary, but I wanted to include as much information as possible. So without further ado, let’s get down to the day-to-day itinerary activities!!

BEST PLACES TO STAY ON THIS ITINERARY FOR BALI

Bali is home to some of the world’s most gorgeous luxury resorts and private villas but also has an extensive variety of mid-range hotels and backpacker hostels. It depends on your budget and how much you want to spend. I’ve compiled a fun selection of my top recommended accommodation for each destination on my Bali itinerary. I know you’ll enjoy your stay at any of the options below:

Bali Airbnb

WHERE TO STAY IN ULUWATU

Radisson Blu Bali Uluwatu : Consistently reviewed as one of the best values in Bali, get treated like royalty here without breaking the bank. There’s a gorgeous sun terrace with a swimming pool, extremely clean and comfortable rooms, and impeccable service!

Six Senses Uluwatu : This brand new 5-Star Luxury Resort in Uluwatu will certainly provide an unforgettable stay, but rooms here are costly. Its cliffside location, delicious cuisine, and immaculate attention would make for an exceptional first hotel on the island.

Home-Bience  Hostel : If you’re a backpacker on a tight budget in Bali, look no further than staying here at Home-Bience Hostel. While it has a shared kitchen and barbeque facilities, you can also get a varied breakfast at an affordable rate too.

WHere to stay in Uluwatu

WHERE TO STAY IN CANGGU

Theanna Eco Villa and Spa : Top-notch luxury at bargain prices! Once you step foot inside this eco resort, you’ll fall into a state of complete tranquility. It’s consistently rated and reviewed as the best hotel and resort in Canggu, with excellent value for money and world-class service.

Kosone Hostel | Alternative Beach : I was living in Canggu when this opened (early 2019), and I’d say it’s the best hostel in Canggu! It’s got a fabulous pool with a swim-up bar, DJs spinning music all day, delicious food, comfortable beds, and rooftop jacuzzis. Do I need to say anymore? Trust me – if you’re a backpacker in Canggu, stay here!

WHERE TO STAY IN UBUD

Hanging Gardens of Bali | Ubud’s Premiere Luxury Resort : This is the jungle resort of your dreams! “Located just 30-minute drive from the Ubud’s town center and nestled deep in the heart of Ubud’s rich rainforest preserve, this enchanting five-star luxury resort on 3.2 hectares has 44 private suites and individual villas.”

Visesa Ubud Resort : This best-seller luxury resort has fantastic prices for the comfort you’ll receive. The villas are absolutely stunning, the staff goes above and beyond, and it has pretty much everything you look for in a resort in Ubud. Delicious food, gorgeous views, shuttle services to the center, and a full spa await you.

Wayan’s Family Hostel Ubud : If you’re looking for an excellent but cheap hostel in Ubud, look no money than this charming family-run guesthouse. It has a magnificent backpacker atmosphere, is a beautiful property, and you’ll fall in love with the staff!

Ubud Rice Terraces - Bali Itinerary

WHERE TO STAY ON GILI TRAWANGAN

Pearl Of Trawangan Resort : There are tons of beautiful resorts on the Gili Islands, but this is easily my favorite! It has an unbeatable beachfront location near the main promenade. The stunning property would be an excellent pick for your time in paradise!!

Gili Castle (formerly known as Gili Backpackers) : This is where I worked when I lived on Gili T, and I’ve got nothing but fond memories of this backpacker hostel! They organize awesome parties and pub crawls, which make it easy to meet fellow travelers. There is a pool with a rock climbing wall, and all the facilities are comfortable. I’d highly recommend staying here for young travelers on a budget.

BALI ITINERARY DAY 1: INTRODUCTION TO BALI = ULUWATU BLISS (3+ NIGHTS)

Honestly, there is no better place to begin your Bali vacation than down in Uluwatu , which is at the southern tip of the island!

It’s my personal favorite area in Bali, world-famous for its surf competitions, has a really fun nightlife scene, and is undoubtedly the best part of the island for watching the sunset. Uluwatu is a place that will certainly leave an impression and will keep you coming back for more! Here you can spend your days relaxing on the beach, swimming in infinity pools, lounging at day clubs, surfing gnarly waves, or riding a scooter along epic coastlines.

It also has a perfectly relaxed atmosphere that I absolutely love, and I could easily see myself living in Uluwatu for a couple of months sometime in the future. There really is no shortage of amazing things to do in Uluwatu , which I’ve discussed for day 2. Since it’s your first day on the island, take the evening to relax at your resort, enjoy a lovely evening meal, and hopefully conquer any jet lag you’re feeling.

Finns Beach Club - Bali Resorts

If you’re up for it, you could enjoy dinner and cocktails your first evening having dinner soaking up the vibe. I recommend one of Jimbaran Bay’s cliffside restaurants or candlelit dinners on Jimbaran Bay, about a 15-20 minute drive from Uluwatu.

“Perched atop distinctive rock formations along Jimbaran’s pristine sunset coast, Rock Bar Bali is widely respected as one of the globe’s most popular sunset, cocktail, and entertainment venues. Showcasing unparalleled views from 14 meters above the Indian Ocean, Rock Bar is accessible via AYANA’s dramatic cliffside inclinator. Featuring a glamorous sunset vibe, and a seductive after-dark ambiance, listen to premier international DJs as they heighten your experience from a custom DJ booth carved directly into the cliff face”.

BALI ITINERARY DAY 2: ULUWATU BEACH EXPLORATIONS & NIGHTLIFE

Everyone will be different, depending on how you want to spend your Bali vacation. Do you want to treat this as a relaxing holiday, or are you more adventurous? Do you want to be surrounded by people and experience luxurious beach clubs, or do you prefer solitude and exploring quieter areas?

No matter what kind of traveler you are, I’ve listed a few of my favorite activities in Uluwatu and the south coast of Bali, and I’m sure this will keep you super busy.

Uluwatu - 5 days in Bali Itinerary

ULUWATU HIGHLIGHTS & THINGS TO DO

  • Visit the Uluwatu Temple: “This one of six key temples believed to be Bali’s spiritual pillars, and is renowned for its magnificent location, perched on top of a steep cliff approximately 70 meters above sea level.”  After your tour of the Uluwatu Temple, I’d also suggest checking out the Kecak Fire Dance if you’re there simultaneously. It’s a unique cultural fire and traditional Balinese dance show that is definitely a superb experience.
  • Watch the professional surfers at Uluwatu Beach: There are tons of different bars and restaurants to choose from, but sit back, grab a Bintang (local beer), and watch from above while these pros amaze you with their skills.
  • Explore all the beautiful beaches around Uluwatu: You’re spoiled for choice here with beaches like Suluban Beach, Padang Padang, Dreamland Beach, Bingin Beach, Melasti Beach, Green Bowl Beach, and Pandawa Beach.
  • Never miss a sunset. Uluwatu is home to the most magical sunsets practically every evening, so make sure you plan accordingly! Find an infinity pool, rooftop bar, or restaurant terrace, and soak it up!
  • Check out a day club: Sundays Beach Club, Finns Beach Club, OMNIA, Karma Beach Club, etc. Honestly, there are tons of epic places to spend a day, but they can be a bit pricey if you’re a backpacker on a budget!
  • Sunday nights at Single Fin: This is one of the most legendary parties on the island, but they only really happen on Sunday night. Don’t get me wrong, Single Fin is an awesome bar & restaurant every night of the week, but definitely, don’t miss the Sunday night party.
  • Spend Saturday nights at Padang Padang Beach: There’s a really cool beach party every Saturday night with reggae and electronic music, lively crowds, and a unique location!
  • Rent a moto to explore it all easily: Uluwatu is one of the best areas on the island to adventure around on a moto! You can rent one for as little as $4 per day, the roads never seem too busy, and it’s just a great feeling!
  • Enjoy a meal at Cashew Tree: This will always be one of my favorite restaurants in all of Bali! They’ve got deliciously healthy smoothies, a large menu, and affordable prices. It’s a backpacker favorite as well, located nearby Bingin’ Beach.

Check out my article about the best things to do in Uluwatu for more information. All I know is that it’s simply a breathtaking area of Bali, and it might just be hard to leave.

Kecak Fire Dance - Uluwatu, Bali Itinerary

BALI ITINERARY DAY 3: NUSA ISLANDS DAY-TRIPPING

Located just a short 20-30 minute speedboat ride off the coast of Bali are three idyllic islands: Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, and Nusa Penida.

They are all absolutely gorgeous and have unbelievable beaches, landscapes, and some of the best snorkeling or scuba-diving in the country. I’ll talk about this at the bottom of this article, but a substitution would be spending several days on one of these islands if you care a lot about these water activities.

I think it’s a really fun and fantastic day trip since it’s just off the coast, and you can see a lot and still make it back to Uluwatu for sunset cocktails — that is if you have the energy!

There are tons of options, but here are a few of the best sellers. It really just depends if you’re more into beaches, viewpoints, swimming, or snorkeling.

BALI ITINERARY DAY 4: CANGGU CHILLIN & BAR HOPPING

In only a few short years, Canggu has quickly become popular and overthrown Seminyak as “the place to be”  in Bali. It’s changed drastically since my first visit in 2015. Since then, it has   become a digital nomad hotspot loaded with trendy cafes, co-working spaces, yoga studios, beach clubs, funky bars, surf camps, and thousands of people enjoying the Canggu lifestyle!

I was fortunate to live in Canggu for a couple of months this year, and it really is a must-visit in Bali. Here’s what you should add to your Bali itinerary for 4 days.

bali itinerary

CANGGU HIGHLIGHTS & THINGS TO DO

  • Eat at as many different cafes as possible: Canggu is easily one of the top “foodie hotspots” I’ve ever visited in my entire life. There are literally dozens of places you should try! A couple of my personal favorites are Milk & Madu, The Shady Shack, Motion Cafe, Peleton Supershop, Cinta Cafe, and Milu by Nook.
  • Take a surfing lesson: If you’re new to the sport, Canggu can be an excellent place to learn the basics of surfing! While the waves can be a bit rough on some days, the surf camps are awesome in Canggu and will be a great way to spend a couple of hours. Take this tour  as an introduction to the sport.
  • Watch the sunset every night on the beach: There are tons of different little local bars & restaurants along the beach, and they tend to put out bean bags and tables during the sunset. Grab a coconut and a beer, and watch the sky change colors to gorgeous orange and pink hues.
  • Relax & swim at Alternative Beach Pool & Hostel: This venue is becoming super popular in Canggu. It’s got a perfect temperature pool, decent food options, and a nice sandy vibe hence the name.
  • Spend a luxurious day at Finns Beach Club: If you’re not on the strictest budget, why not book a daybed at Finn’s for an easygoing day at a gorgeous venue?
  • Stop by AMO Spa for one of their famous facials, relaxing massages, and an Epsom salt jacuzzi session: I’m sad I didn’t discover this place sooner because it ended up being one of my favorite spots in Canggu. The sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and cold plunge circuit are an outstanding endorphin rush!
  • Go Canggu nightlife bar hopping: There are plenty of places to visit whether you go for drinks at Old Man’s, cocktails at La Brisa, or find your way to the hidden bar in the supermarket along the  “Canggu shortcut.”  Other really awesome bars I enjoy are The Lawn (awesome pool included), Pretty Poison, and Deus Ex Machina! You can check out this article about the best bars in Canggu for more information on the nightlife!

BALI ITINERARY DAY 5: SURF, EAT, REPEAT & TANAH LOT TEMPLE SUNSET

Spend another day exploring everything (mainly the cafes) that Canggu has to offer. Do some yoga, surf, hit a co-working space, cross-fit, join a beach clean up, and more!

For sunset, I’d recommend renting a moto and driving down the road (only 20-25 minutes) to the Tanah Lot Temple . It’s one of Bali’s most important landmarks, famed for its unique offshore setting and sunset backdrops. It’s an ancient Hindu shrine perched on top of an outcrop amidst constantly crashing waves.

There’s a small entrance fee of 60,000 IDR ($4 USD), and you can easily spend an hour or two walking around the coastline and enjoying the scenic views.

Best Bali Itinerary

BALI ITINERARY DAY 6: SEMINYAK SHOPPING, DAY CLUBS & NIGHTLIFE

Continuing on with this Bali trip planning, I’d recommend making the short drive from Canggu down to Seminyak for a day of shopping and beach clubs. Seminyak is one of the fancier and more developed regions on the island and is full of awesome things to do, places to eat, and fantastic souvenir shopping!

Now, on this itinerary, I’ve only listed one day in Seminyak because the last time I visited, I felt it was starting to get a bit too overcrowded. Still, you could easily stay here for several days and explore everything this place offers.

Bali Travel Trip Planning

SEMINYAK HIGHLIGHTS & THINGS TO DO

  • Souvenir shop til’ you drop: For me, I think the Seminyak, Legian, and Kuta area is the best for buying all your souvenirs in Bali. Just remember to haggle, or the locals will take you for a ride. Most prices in all the souvenir stalls are negotiable!
  • Visit Potato Head Beach Club: I’ve visited the world-famous Potato Head several times, and it remains one of my favorite spots in Seminyak! It’s a gorgeous beachfront property, has tons of fancy daybeds and loungers, and the food is absolutely delicious! While Potato Head Beach Club is a bit costly (for Bali standards), it’s worth stopping by for a swim, a meal, and a beer. There’s a lively atmosphere, and it can be a great place to meet people – especially around the swim-up bar.
  • Relax on bean bags and under umbrellas at La Plancha Seminyak: One of the most colorful bars & restaurants on the beach you’ll ever see. During sunset, they’ve got a fun DJ spinning, decent prices, and an overall fantastic vibe you’re guaranteed to love!
  • Pool party at Mrs. Sippy: This is the largest saltwater pool and one of the best pool party hotspots in Bali! Sippy regularly has international DJs come to perform (I saw Pete Tong there earlier this year), and you’ll love watching people jump from the high platform all day long.
  • Grab a cup of coffee at Revolver: If you’re a coffee snob, you have to try a cup from Revolver, known to be the best coffee in Seminyak!
  • Party it up at the Legendary Nightlife: Kuta & Seminyak are two areas that are quite popular for their bar and nightclub scene. Here are a few of my favorite spots: Motel Mexicola, SkyGarden, Ku De Ta, Cocoon, Woobar, and JENJA.

BALI ITINERARY DAY 7: UBUD CAFES, MONKEYS, TEMPLES, AND YOGA

Now that you’ve gotten plenty of time to explore Bali’s popular beach areas, the time has come to make the hour’s drive up to the cultural and spiritual capital of Bali.

Many people plan a trip to Bali and immediately add Ubud to their itinerary. That’s because there is truly something magical in the air at Ubud. The minute you step foot in this town, you will slowly start to feel your stress & worries float away.

Ubud is also a fantastic jumping-off point for adventuring around the rest of the island.

Ubud - Bali Itinerary 7 Days

UBUD HIGHLIGHTS & THINGS TO DO

For your first day in Ubud, though, here’s what I would suggest crossing off your bucket list!

  • Try out trendy cafes, vegan eats & smoothie bowls: Ubud is another incredible destination for food, and you could easily spend 3 days here eating at as many places as possible and still only scratch the surface. A few of my favorites you MUST TRY are ZEST, Sayuri Healing Food, Alchemy, KAFE, and Clear Cafe.
  • Get up close and personal with monkeys: Well, strolling through the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is the best place to do it. Just be careful. The monkeys at this magical sanctuary  aren’t always as friendly as you’d hope! It’s centrally located in town, super cheap, and a super fun way to spend an hour.
  • Legends of the Hidden Temples: Rent a moto, and explore as many of the beautiful temples in the Ubud area as possible. There are literally dozens, and all of them are gorgeous. A few top picks are Pura Tirta Empul, Pura Taman Saraswati, and Goa Gajah!
  • Do some Y-O-G-A: There are some fantastic yoga studios in Ubud, and even if it’s not your thing, I’d recommend trying it out. My first experience with Bikram yoga was in Ubud, and it was a sweaty experience I’ll never forget.
  • Ubud Art Market and beyond: Strolling around downtown Ubud has some really fantastic shopping opportunities. You can find some awesome stuff from the traditional art market, souvenir stalls, and trendy fashion stalls here.

Ubud Rice Terraces - Bali Itinerary

 UBUD TOURS

Ubud balinese cooking class at an organic farm.

Review: “Discover the culinary secrets of Bali at an exclusive cooking class at an organic farm in the lush tropics surrounding Ubud. Visit a local market and experience everyday life, before preparing a regular or vegetarian meal with the help of a chef.”

BALI ITINERARY DAY 8: TEGALALANG RICE TERRACES, BALI SWING & CAMPUHAN RIDGE WALK

Ubud still has so many places to teach you about Balinese culture and beauty, like the Tegalalang Rice Terraces and the famous swings that almost every influencer has taken pictures at while visiting Bali. These are all ideal for your second day here.

HIGHLIGHTS & THINGS TO DO

  • Visit the rice terraces: Located just a quick twenty-minute scooter ride from downtown Ubud is the Instagram-famous and undeniably gorgeous Tegalalang Rice Terraces . It’s one of the most stunning tourist destinations in Bali and will certainly impress you with its sprawling views of lush green valleys, rice paddies, and towering palm trees! It’s completely free to walk through, but I would bring money for any Bali swings you want to do, coconuts, cold drinks, meals, etc.

Ubud Rice Terraces - Bali Itinerary

  • Catch the rice terrace sunrises: If you’re willing to wake up early, watching the sunrise & witnessing the light rays shine through the palm trees is a sight you must see to believe! It’ll be one of the most peaceful ways to start your day, and then you can spend the next 3-4 hours exploring the area. If you head there around mid-day, though, expect big crowds and intense humidity (which can make for some sweaty explorations)!

When you’re done hiking around the rice terraces, I’d recommend picking one of the restaurants up at the top for a bite to eat! It’s a pretty epic place to enjoy a refreshing smoothie bowl & fresh coconut water!

Ubud Rice Terraces - Bali Itinerary

  • Terrace River Pool Swing: A few minutes from the main rice terraces is this super fun zip-lining and Bali Swing mini-amusement park called Terrace River Pool Swing . It’s also free to walk through and take photos, but you’ll have to pay if you want to do any of the activities. My friend Vanessa and I spent a good hour here and loved it!

Ubud Rice Terraces - Bali Itinerary

  • Campuhan Ridge Walk: The Campuhan Ridge Walk is the best-known Ubud hiking trail and is a fantastic place to stroll during the sunset (or any time of the day, really). The sparse crowds and the aesthetically rich vistas will remind you why people worldwide come to Bali. The trail starts at the historical origin of Ubud, the confluence (or Campuhan) of the Wos Rivers. You’ll get some epic hilltop views as you stroll along the nice paved trail and will be surrounded by Ubud rice fields and a deep gorge with a river rushing through it. It’s only about 1.5 kilometers long, so it is popular as a place to work up a sweat. If you’re not too exhausted after exploring the rice terraces, I would say this is an absolute must-do in Ubud!

BALI ITINERARY DAY 9: MT. BATUR SUNRISE HIKE & SPA RELAXATION RECOVERY

Admire the panoramic view of the three volcanoes of Mt. Agung, Mt. Abang, and Mt. Rinjani in Lombok in the majestic sunrise over the clouds from the crater of Mt. Batur!

For adventure travelers, I’d highly recommend waking up super early and beginning the trek to the top of Mt. Batur to witness one of the most magnificent sunrises you will ever see!

Fair warning, though, this hike is known to be a bit intense and is not for the faint-hearted. Unfortunately, this is one of the few main activities I haven’t gotten the chance to do myself yet, but everyone speaks so highly of it!

Mount Batur, Bali, Indonesia

There are a few different tours to choose from, and it just depends on what piques your interest the most! Read through some of their itineraries, and browse through all their company reviews.

  • Mount Batur Sunrise Trek with Breakfast
  • Mount Batur Sunrise Trek with Hidden Waterfall
  • Mount Batur Sunrise Trek & Hot Springs

“Head up the mountain along a less-crowded hiking trail that follows the volcano’s eastern slope. During the ascent, you’ll trek along a 3-kilometer-long trail. The trail is of moderate difficulty, and passes through lush tropical jungles. On reaching the top you’ll enjoy breakfast cooked by steam from the volcano. Sip hot tea or coffee at leisure while watching the magical sunrise. Afterwards, your trek continues to the main crater rim of the volcano, at 1,717 meters above sea level. Take a different route down the mountain, starting from the southwestern crater rim. The journey ends with a chance to soak in the crystal-clear waters of a hot spring to soothe away any aches and pains you may have.”

Mt. Batur Sunrise - Bali Itinerary

UBUD SPA RECOVERY HIGHLIGHTS & THINGS TO DO

After an early morning wake-up and a long day of climbing up a volcano, you will be ready for a little bit of #self-care and pampering! Ubud was the first time I booked a full-day spa package, and the overall experience blew me away.

I only paid $120 USD, but I received a body scrub, 60-minute massage, herbal bath, healthy lunch, manicure, and pedicure!! It was called DIVINE PAMPERING!!

  • Relax at Tasku Spa: Countless different spas in Ubud would be perfect, but I went to Taksu Spa | Ubud’s Premiere Wellness Center  for my spa treatment. They didn’t pay me to say this or anything. I just loved my experience and would highly recommend it to fellow travelers! If you’re looking for something a bit cheaper, though, you can visit any of the smaller massage parlors spread around the town!

Bali 7 Days Itinerary

BALI ITINERARY DAY 10: HANDARA GATE, LAKE BATAN & ULUN DANU BERATAN TEMPLE & SEKUMPUL WATERFALL

Next up on this ultimate Bali itinerary is to book a day trip, hire a private driver, or rent some scooters and explore north Bali! There’s quite a lot to see up there, and it will definitely be a pretty solid day of adventures.

NORTH BALI HIGHLIGHTS & THINGS TO DO

  • Handara Gate : Make a quick stop over at this iconic “Bali Gate,” which is actually the entrance to a golf course. It’s a perfect photo opportunity and is a breathtaking view of green scenery and the gigantic exotic traditional Balinese gate as your backdrop.

Handara Gate, Northern Bali

  • Lake Beratan: This is where you’ll visit the majestic Ulun Danu Beratan Temple sitting on a small island on the lake, just as you’ve seen in the postcards and Instagram shots of Bali. This lakeside temple was constructed in honor of Dewi Danu, the lake goddess, formed by a volcanic eruption 30,000 years ago.

5 Days Bali Itinerary

  • Sekumpul Waterfall: Quite commonly called the best waterfall in Bali. It’s just a 40-minute drive from the lake and is the perfect place to spend a few hours! Just don’t forget your GoPro!
  • Banyumala Twin Waterfall: “This stunningly beautiful waterfall is perfect for a quiet and peaceful afternoon in the arms of Mother Nature. The natural pool is inviting with its translucent turquoise waters. Swim in tranquility, listen to the thunderous roar of cascading waters, and take in the sights of the vibrant greenery. Although no picture will ever do this natural wonder justice, that shouldn’t stop you from that perfect Instagram shot!”
  • Rent a scooter: If you’re confident on a scooter, I would 100% recommend you explore by yourself. The roads are all really scenic, and I loved my experience just whippin’ around the North. It’s higher elevation, which means it’s less hot, and the way the clouds sit upon the hills is majestic!

NORTH OF BALI TOURS

Northern charm: lake bratan, handara gate, waterfall & swing.

This tour company offers a trip that goes to most of these places and would be a great way to see everything with a professional guide. The price includes all entrance fees (which can actually add up) and has excellent reviews!

HIRE A CAR WITH A PRIVATE DRIVER FOR 10 HOURS

I remember when I first visited Bali and discovered you could hire a car with a driver to take you anywhere you wanted to go for less than $50! It’s such a fantastic deal, especially if you’re traveling with a significant other or a group of friends!

Price:   $45.00

5 Days Bali Itinerary

BALI ITINERARY DAYS 11-14: EXPERIENCE PARADISE ON THE GILI ISLANDS

Gili Trawangan Snorkeling

Now, if you’ve got more than 10 days in Bali, this is where I’d suggest sailing over to the Gili Islands — one of my favorite destinations in Indonesia! I actually spent a few months living on Gili Trawangan working at a party hostel back in 2015, and it was one of the highlights of my time backpacking through Southeast Asia.

A trip to the Gili Islands is a trip to paradise! The color of the water here will honestly leave you speechless, and I’m just obsessed with the fact that pretty much anytime you go snorkeling/ scuba-diving out there, you’ll be swimming with turtles. There is top-notch nightlife, incredible restaurants, a relaxed atmosphere, gorgeous villas, and the most jaw-dropping sunsets every night!!

Gili Air - 4 Days in Bali

Here is a quick breakdown of every island:

  • Gili Trawangan = Party Island
  • Gili Meno = Honeymoon Island
  • Gili Air = Best of Both Worlds / Family Friendly

To get to the Gili Islands, you’ll need to talk to any travel agent in Ubud to organize the hotel pick-up and transfer schedule. You can pick various times, but I’d recommend doing the earliest one possible. It’s a couple hours’ drive to the port and then another couple of hours to the islands!

Bali to Gili Islands Travel Itinerary

GILI ISLANDS HIGHLIGHTS & THINGS TO DO

  • Go snorkeling or scuba-diving every day: The water is crystal clear here, and you can see some pretty awesome marine life just off the shores of each of the three islands! For scuba divers, make sure you chat with some of the dive centers to discuss the best dive sites!
  • Watch the sunset every night: Grab a cocktail or a coconut at one of the many beach bars, and watch while the sky dips beneath the horizon in the future and lights up the sky in pretty much every color of the rainbow.
  • Party it up: Gili Trawangan is easily one of the best party islands in Southeast Asia , and you can find yourself bar hopping every night if you want to.
  • Bike ride around the island: There are no cars on the Gili’s, so I’d recommend renting a bike for at least one day and riding all the way around the island!
  • Enjoy a psychedelic experience: You may or may not be interested in this, but you can buy magic mushrooms in Indonesia quite easily! They’re readily available at many beach bars and shops, and they’re a super fun way to spend a few hours!

Mushrooms on Gili Trawangan

ARRIVAL AT BALI DENPASAR AIRPORT

Once you’ve landed in Bali, successfully made it through immigration and customs, and collected your bags – you’ll need to get your transportation sorted to your first hotel. I must warn you that Bali’s worst part is the Ngurah Rai International Airport !

You will be harassed by countless people asking you for a taxi, which can be overwhelming after a long-haul flight. That’s why I’d strongly suggest booking a Bali Airport Private Transfer beforehand!

There are tons of different Bali transfer companies, and most hotels will offer this service (but charge way too much), but I really love this one through Get Your Guide – Bali Airport Private Transfer ! I’ve personally used this service before, and for only $18, it’s a pretty fantastic deal!

It’s really nice to have this all handled before arriving at the airport because it makes for a stress-free arrival! Most Bali car drivers are super friendly and are happy to chat about their favorite things on the island, food, etc.

Sunrise in Bali

BEST ITINERARY FOR BALI SUBSTITUTIONS

Alright, so I know I just went over so much information, but now I’m offering up a few other possible Bali itinerary ideas! The truth is that every traveler is a bit different, and there is no right way to spend 10 days or two weeks exploring Bali!

Nusa Penida

  • Spend more time on the Nusa Islands: With fantastic marine biodiversity, rugged landscapes, and pristine beaches – taking the ferry over to the Nusa Islands and spending 3-4 days over here would be a great option.
  • Book a few nights at Mt. Kintamani instead of Ubud: This is a really gorgeous part of Bali, and you wouldn’t believe some of the gorgeous resorts up there. It’ll also make the sunrise hike a lot easier, and you could even attempt to do it on your own to save money!

Monkey on Mt Batur Sunrise

  • Relax & slow down in Sanur: This sleepy coastal town was one of the very first places I visited in Bali, and I honestly loved it. While it may not have the gorgeous coastlines like in Uluwatu or the trendy cafes in Canggu, it’s definitely a comfortable spot with some lively resorts, beautiful white sand beaches, and a nice relaxing vibe. There’s great souvenir shopping, an awesome night market, and overall a solid place to spend a few days!

BALI ITINERARY TRAVEL TIPS

Bring an international driver’s license.

Fair warning – there’s a good chance that you will get pulled over while driving around Bali! The local cops in Bali are, well… they can be rather CORRUPT. Not all of them, but there’s a huge issue with cops extorting cash from tourists!

I’ve been harassed almost every time I drive around Bali (for longer-distance trips), but if you have the proper paperwork and an International Driver’s License , you shouldn’t have any problems. Most of the time, they are just security checkpoints on major roads.

If you do get pulled over and they are giving you a difficult time… just try and BRIBE THEM. Hand them over a 50,000 IDR bill, and then show them an empty wall! Simply drive off, and see if that works.

Gili Islands Sunset - Planning a Trip to Bali

BE CAREFUL WITH THE MONEY EXCHANGE PLACES

They are notorious on the island for scamming tourists, so my recommendation would be to just use the ATMs to get your money. Also, make sure you bring a credit card with no international withdrawal fees! Most tour agencies, restaurants, and bars accept credit cards these days!

DON’T TRUST THE MONKEYS

If this is your first time traveling through Southeast Asia, you might not understand how evil monkeys can actually be! Don’t have any loose jewelry around them, don’t smile at them, don’t look at them directly in the eyes, etc. Just be super cautious with them!

Check out these YouTube videos below for First Time Travelers to Bali!

TOP 10 BALI (TRAVELLERS PARADISE)

HOW TO GET AROUND IN BALI

Use a rideshare app.

There are three main Rideshare apps in Bali: UBER, GOJEK, and GRAB! Download all three of these before landing, and you’ll always be able to find a ride. I’ve never had any issues using any of these platforms, and it is definitely the easiest way to get around. You can even call a MOTO GoJek, and they’ll offer you a helmet, and you sit behind them!

RENT A SCOOTER

Scooters are an extremely popular way for travelers in Bali to explore the island. Especially around Canggu, Uluwatu, and Ubud – it makes a huge difference if you have your own moto !

HIRE A PRIVATE DRIVER

For $40-$60 per day, you can Hire a Private Driver (depending on how long you hire for)! For example, if you’re booking a taxi from Uluwatu to Canggu, why not just hire the driver for the entire day, and go explore as much as possible? It really just depends on how you want to spend your days!

bali itinerary

INTERESTED IN SCUBA DIVING?

If you’ve found yourself with some more time to gallivant around Indonesia, I’d highly recommend booking a flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo. So you can visit the wondrous Komodo National Park  and experience some of the world’s most unbelievable marine biodiversity and scuba-diving.

I’ve now visited Komodo two different times, and it is a remarkable destination that deserves a place on every traveler’s bucket list! Komodo National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve!

The color and clarity of the water are stunning, the landscape is completely gorgeous, and getting up close and personal with Komodo Dragons is an experience you’ll never forget. But the real magic begins when you strap on your fins and snorkel mask and start exploring the underwater scenery!

It really is the best snorkeling and scuba-diving I’ve witnessed in my life! It’s also one of the best places to do a liveaboard in Southeast Asia, as the prices are relatively affordable (compared to other popular scuba destinations).

Check out these Komodo National Park liveaboards to view dates, prices, and availability to see if you can squeeze one into your Bali itinerary!

  • Adelaar Liveaboard (Bali – Komodo)
  • Moana Liveaboard
  • Indo Aggressor (Komodo National Park)

Komodo National Park

PURCHASE THE BALI LONELY PLANET & POCKETBOOK

No matter how long your Bali vacation is, I’d also recommend picking up one of the Bali Lonely Planet Travel Guide Books ! They are honestly loaded with insider tips, restaurant recommendations, and fun day ideas! I know I’ve gone into a  lot of detail in this post (so maybe you should bookmark this for your trip), but these are always handy!

Bali Itinerary 10 Days – Perfect For First Timers

Posted on Last updated: February 1, 2024

Home » Blog » Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Bali Itinerary 10 Days – Perfect For First Timers

Are you looking to experience the ultimate Bali vacation? Then this 10-day Bali itinerary is perfect for you! From exploring beautiful beaches and lush jungles, to sampling delicious cuisine and taking part in traditional ceremonies, this trip has it all.

Best Bali itinerary for 10 days

You’ll start by visiting some of the most popular tourist spots on the island before heading off into more remote areas where you can truly get a sense of local life. Of course, no visit to Bali would be complete without indulging in its amazing food culture – so make sure to leave room for dessert! Along the way, we’ll show you how to enjoy all that Bali has to offer while staying safe and mindful of cultural customs.

Where is Bali?

There is a lot of confusion out there about whether or not Bali is a country. The answer is no, Bali is not a country but one of many islands that make up the southeast Asian country of Indonesia. Bali stands out above the other Indonesian islands because of its stunning landscapes, luxurious accommodations, international influence, and warm welcoming people.

How To Get to Bali?

With Bali being an island, you will most likely need to take a plane to get there unless you’re coming from one of the neighboring islands or a cruise ship. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is the main airport and it accepts flights from all over the world.

Bali 10 day itinerary for first timers.

If you’re coming from the United States there are no direct flights available unless you are coming direct from Hawaii and the flight options are few and far between. Most connections will occur in Jakarta, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and Manila Philippines.

There are direct flights from many other major cities in the world, but it is also possible to fly indirectly from anywhere.

Things To Know Before You Go

Before we jump into the Ultimate Bali itinerary 10 days, there are some things to know that will help you plan and make the most out of your trip.

There are two official languages spoken in Bali, Bahasa Indonesian and Balinese. Balinese is only spoken on the island of Bali while Bahasa Indonesian is the national language and spoken all over Indonesia. Most locals that you meet in Bali will speak both.

But, the big question Do they speak English in Bali? While English is not the main language spoken, you can find many people who speak it throughout the island, especially in the tourism industry. We currently live here in Bali and only speak a little Bahasa and we get along just fine using mainly only English.

The currency used in Bali is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). And let me tell you they use a lot of zeros! For example, 1 million Rupiah is currently worth about 67.00 USD.

ATMs are available all over the island, and it’s generally recommended to use them rather than exchanging money at a currency exchange as you usually will get a better rate and it’s much more convenient. Credit cards are accepted in most major establishments though be aware when using foreign cards there may be transaction fees associated typically 2-3%.

Unlike the rest of Indonesia where Muslim is the majority, Bali is predominately Hindu and its culture is deeply intertwined with the religion. You will find temples all over, in homes and businesses, even on the sides of roads!

10 day Bali itinerary to experience Balinese culture.

The Balinese people are incredibly welcoming to those that visit their island but much like visiting any country, it’s important to respect their beliefs and traditions when you’re here.

The climate in Bali is tropical and the temperature stays pretty consistent year-round averaging around 82°F (27°C). The dry season runs from April to October while the wet season runs from November to March. During the rainier months, you can expect late-night showers but usually will have clear skies during the day. See Bali weather by month for the best time to visit.

Is Bali Safe to Visit?

Yes. Bali is considered very safe for tourists to visit and has a low crime rate. You should take the same precautions as you normally would when traveling to any foreign country like not leaving your valuables unattended, especially in public places.

Bali 10 day itinerary with culture.

There are areas of Bali that you won’t be able to access due to safety reasons and government restrictions but don’t worry, these areas are far away from the main tourist spots and won’t affect your trip. As long as you use common sense, you should be more than safe during your stay in Bali.

Do You Need a Visa For Bali?

US passport holders as well as 80+ other passports do not need to apply for a Visa before arriving in Bali. A Visa On Arrival (VOA) is available for purchase once you arrive at the airport. The cost is 500,000 Rupiah or about 35 USD.

Each person including children will need a VOA. It can be extended one time for a total of 60 days before you will need to exit the country. Also, it’s a requirement to have at least 6 months left before your passport expires.

How To Get Around Bali

Bali has no mass transit system or train lines, so the best way to get around is by car. Self-drive car rentals are fairly cheap and widely available throughout Bali. If you’d rather not drive, a very popular option is to h ire a private driver for the day or multiple days, which will take you wherever you need to go.

You can also take a Grab (which is a ridesharing service like Uber) or GoJek for a motorbike ride. These services are widely available all over Bali. Be sure to download these apps before arriving and add payment details.

Another popular option if you’re traveling solo or as a couple is to rent scooters or motorbikes. The traffic can be quite bad and scooters are a much quicker way to get around. However, I would caution that it’s not advisable if you don’t have experience riding them as the roads can be chaotic and a bit confusing to navigate.

Book scooter rental through your hotel, Airbnb host, or our favorite Bikag o.

How Many Days Do You Need in Bali

Bali is not a place where you can do a quick weekend trip, so the longer you can stay, the better! Generally, for a first-time visit, I recommend at least 7 days but preferably 10 to be able to explore multiple areas. This will give you enough time to check out a few of the popular locations and still have some downtime to relax on the beach or poolside.

If you really want to get off the beaten path, I recommend at least 14 days to explore more remote areas that aren’t as frequented by tourists.

Where to Book Hotels and Accommodations

One of the great things about Bali is the wide range of accommodations available for any budget. You’ll find everything from super cheap hostel stays to luxurious 5-star resorts and everything in between.

For large groups, we recommend checking out Airbnb. For budget solo or couple travelers, look into these cheap hostels.

For everything else, including hotels, resorts, glamping, and villas see the best prices at Agoda.com.

Bali Itinerary 10 Days Introduction

We’ve designed this 10-day Bali Itinerary starting at Day 0 which will be the day that you arrive at the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar Bali to Day 10 the day that you fly out.

Bali Itinerary Day 0: Travel Day – Arrive in Bali

If you’re coming from the west coast of the U.S. either from San Francisco, Los Angeles or Seattle you more than likely will have logged 20-25 hours of travel time and be quite exhausted and ready to relax especially by the time you get through immigration, and customs.

Head straight to the hotel in either Seminyak or Canggu. No matter what time your plane arrives you’ll be looking for a little rest.

[Before you leave the airport grab yourself a prepaid sim card for your mobile phone. We like the Telkomsel service and it runs about 80k ($5.25 USD) for about 15 gigs.]

Looking for the best hotels in Seminyak and Canggu? Here are some of our favorites:

  • Luxury – Como Uma Canggu
  • Mid – Grun Resorts Treehouse Hotel
  • Budget – Sedasa
  • Luxury – Double Six
  • Mid – Aksari
  • Budget – Lotus Tirta

Is it better to stay in Seminyak or Canggu?

Both are great options, but they are different in culture. Canggu has more of a cool trendy surf town vibe while Seminyak offers luxurious upscale accommodations and a more active nightlife.

Bali Itinerary Day 1: Canggu

Start the first official day of your 10-day Bali itinerary with breakfast at Crate Cafe. Crate is the hottest breakfast spot in Canggu and is well-known for their delicious acai bowls, french toast, country breakfasts, and coffee. After breakfast, wander around the streets of Canggu to check out some of the local shops and art galleries.

In the afternoon, head to Echo Beach which is one of Bali’s most surfed beaches. Enjoy watching all the experienced surfers or take a lesson yourself. Here is a list of the best Canggu beaches.

10 day Bali itinerary that includes Canggu.

If you’re not interested in surfing, spend the afternoon visiting Tanah Lot or Pura Tanah Lot in Indonesian. It’s one of the most iconic temples in Bali, located on top of a rock that is surrounded by the ocean.

Continue with dinner at La Brisa, located right on Echo Beach. La Brisa has one of the coolest boho-themed beach club vibes complete with cabanas and pools! It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset and enjoy some delicious food and drinks!

Canggu bali 10 day itinerary

La Brisa is always busy so make sure to make reservations before arriving though they usually always can fit you in if you just show up.

After the sun goes down check out one of Canggu’s live music bars like Old Man’s, The Lawn, or Finn’s. If you’re staying in Seminyak La Favela is always hopping.

Bali Itinerary Day 2: Uluwatu

Get your last taste of Canggu by hitting up Sensorium for breakfast before heading down south to Uluwatu. Sensorium is a trendy cafe with some of the most delicious fusion food you’ll find in Bali.

The next stop is Uluwatu which is known for its rugged coastline and stunning sunsets. Having lived in Hawaii for some time we call Uluwatu the Hawaii of Bali. The white sand and turquoise waters remind us so much of the island of Oahu.

Bali itinerary including Uluwatu.

When you arrive in Uluwatu your first stop should be Dreamland Beach which is a great spot for surfing or swimming and also offers some breathtaking views. If you’re looking for a value stay look at Klapa Resort (it’s located right next to Dreamland).

In the afternoon, head over to Bingin Beach, a secluded beach with crystal-clear waters and soft white sand perfect for relaxing.

Best 10 day Bali itinerary for beginners.

Finish up your day with an evening at the Uluwatu Temple and Kecak Fire Dance Show. This famous performance will give you an authentic taste of Balinese culture. Make sure to make ticket arrangements for the show through your hotel or plan to arrive early as this show does sell out every night.

Bali Itinerary Day 3: More Uluwatu

If your Uluwatu resort or hotel does not offer breakfast or if you’re looking to try something different head over to Waffle Hut Uluwatu for some of the most unique waffles on the island.

Uluwatu 10 days itinerary

Next up visit Suluban Beach for a beautiful cave-like structure that opens up beautifully to the turquoise blue waters. The view from the cliff above is striking enough for many but if you’re adventurous and don’t mind a few steps head down into the cave.

10 day bali beach itinerary

After you fill up your phone with photos at Suluban the next stop is Karang Boma Cliff -probably the most majestical cliff in all of Bali! Just be aware if you have small children or are not comfortable with heights the cliffs are steep!

Time to grab some eats at The Cashew Tree . The Cashew Tree offers a variety of different food options from healthy vegan to not-so-healthy but delicious desserts. There is something for everybody and they have a fun playground area for the kids. For reference, they serve breakfast lunch, and dinner all day.

After you’ve fueled up it’s time to hit Melasti Beach. Melasti is beautifully surrounded by impressive cliffs and probably has the best infrastructure of any of the beaches down in the Uluwatu area. The access is friendly, food/drink choices are solid and showers and bathrooms are available.

10 day itinerary for Bali, indonesia

After you get your beach on it’s time to get your groove on at Sunday’s Beach Club. Sunday’s is one of the most well-known beach clubs in South Bali if not the entire island! Its relaxed waterfront dining, music, and beach bonfires will help you finish out your 2 days in Uluwatu on a high note!

What are the best Hotels in Uluwatu?

  • Luxury – The Ungasan
  • Mid – Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort
  • Budget – Klapa Resort

Bali Itinerary Day 4: Nusa Penida

Check out of your hotel in Uluwatu and cruise over to the Sanur Port to catch the earliest fast boat to Nusa Penida. It’s about 45 minutes boat ride and it’s best to leave early to avoid the rough waters of the afternoon. We recommend booking your fast boat to Nusa Penida through   Angkal Fast Boat  or  Maruti Fast Boat.

10 day Bali itinerary including Nusa Penida

Once you get settled into your accommodation head over to Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong. These two natural wonders are located side-by-side and offer stunning views of the ocean and cliffs.

Next up Kelingking Beach lookout. It’s probably the most Instagrammable spots on the entire island! This is a must-see. If you’re the adventurous type and have a little extra time you can hike down to the beach itself. Be warned it’s not for the faint of heart-it’s steep, kind of sketchy, and totally exposed to the sun.

Bali itinerary 10 days including Kelingking Beach.

Towards the evening make your way over to Amok Sunset for dinner. This restaurant offers a great view of the sun setting over Nusa Penida and the parts of Bali on the mainland. Amok Sunset is famous for its grilled seafood dishes but also offers a variety of Southeast Asian cuisine that won’t disappoint.

Favorite Nusa Penida Tours

Bali Itinerary Day 5: Nusa Penida – Ubud

For your last day in Nusa Penida make sure to get a snorkel tour booked through Komodo Adventure. This is one of the best companies on the island and they offer tours to swim with manta rays at Manta Point. The tour also stops off at Crystal Bay, Diamond Beach, and Turtle Bay so you can get a half day of snorkeling in.

10 day Bali itinerary including Nusa Penida and Diamond Beach.

If you’re traveling with kids, here is a good resource for things to do on Nusa Penida.

Make sure to catch the afternoon boat back to mainland Bali-it usually leaves Nusa Penida around 4 pm. Next stop Ubud!

Best Places to Stay on Nusa Penida

  • Luxury – Adiwana Warnakali

Bali Itinerary Day 6: Ubud

Welcome to the jungle! First on the to-do list is Sacred Monkey Forest. Located in the heart of Ubud, Sacred Monkey Forest is home to hundreds of Balinese long-tailed monkeys. Make sure not to have any loose items or plastic bags of any kind-these monkeys love these shiny objects and can be a bit aggressive if you have food.

Bali 10 day itinerary including monkey forest Ubud.

After you’ve had your fill of primates it’s time to check out Ubud Art Market. This traditional market has everything from handmade souvenirs and unique gifts to fresh fruits and vegetables. Make sure you have some bargaining skills with you-haggling is part of the experience!

For dinner don’t miss Locavore -it’s the talk of the town in Ubud. This award-winning eatery is renowned for its modern and creative twists on traditional Balinese dishes. The atmosphere at Locavore is perfect for a cozy evening, with the outdoor patio bathed in warm lighting and rustic decor.

Or if you’re after some of the best traditional Indonesian food go for Sun Sun Warung.

Finish up your day in Ubud by taking a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk which offers stunning views of the lush jungle landscape. It’s an easy hike and perfect for those looking to get an authentic taste of the Bali jungle.

Bali Itinerary Day 7: Ubud and North Bali

Grab a quick breakfast at Ely’s Kitchen and put on your trekking shoes-it’s time to go waterfall chasing in North Bali. Tell the driver to take you to Banyumala Waterfall first. This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in all Bali. With its multiple tiers and emerald green waters, it’s no wonder why it’s so popular with tourists and locals alike.

Ubud 10 day itinerary Bali

It’s about a 2-hour but very scenic drive-even passing the famous Bali Handara Gate and Ulun Danu Beratan Temple. Take some quick pics and keep heading north to Banyumala Waterfall.

Once you arrive at the Banyumala parking it is about a moderate 15-minute walk down to the base of the falls. Bring your swimmers if you want the full experience.

When you’ve had your fill of Banyumala, make your way over to Sekumpul Waterfall which consists of 7 separate tiers of cascading water.

10 day itinerary including Sekumpul waterfall.

It’s about an hour’s drive from Banyumala, so plan accordingly! This is the most impressive waterfall that I have ever seen! There are three different waterfalls you can visit but you will probably only have time for the main Sekumpul attractions before you need to head back to Ubud for the night.

For more details, check out our complete guide to all of the best waterfalls in Bali.

Best Places to Stay in Ubud

Luxury – Mandapa

Mid – Bisma Eight

Budget – Ketut’s Place

Bali Itinerary Day 8: Ubud and East Bali

At this point, you’ve been going hard hitting all of the main highlights in Bali, it’s time for a little slower pace. So pack your bags because Amed is your next stop and the best-kept secret on the island. Maybe try to catch some zzz’s on the drive since it’s about 2-hours from Ubud.

Popular 10 day Bali itinerary Amed

Amed is located in the East of Bali and is known for its laid-back atmosphere, stunning beaches, breathtaking landscapes, snorkeling, and world-class diving. Once you arrive, kick back at the pool and enjoy the scenery or head to one of the many volcanic black sand beaches located in the area.

If you’re still raring to go see the many things to do in Amed.

Once you have your legs under you again head to our favorite beach and snorkeling location- Jemeluk Bay. This beach has a panoramic view of the sea, gentle waves, and plenty of colorful marine life. The popular underwater temple also known as the “post office” is located in the middle of the bay and marked with a black buoy.

Best Bali 10 day itinerary with snorkeling

*Note. Amed is also a popular Bali destination for scuba diving. With plenty of unique dive sites like the U.S.S. Liberty and a Japanese shipwreck, this is a must-see area for all divers.

For dinner, head to Warung Asri for some of the most delicious seafood in Bali. The restaurant has an incredible view overlooking Lipah beach and is the perfect spot to watch the sunset.

Bali Itinerary Day 9: Amed and East Bali

Start your last full day off by visiting Tirta Gangga Water Palace. This beautiful Balinese water palace was built in 1948 and is a perfect example of Balinese architecture.

10 day Bali itinerary including Tirta Gangga.

Tirta Gangga consists of three separate pools with lush vegetation and statues throughout the grounds. Be sure to bring your camera, this place is a must-see!

Next head over to Pura Lempuyang which is home to the famous Gates of Heaven. This Hindu temple complex is located in the shadow of Mount Agung and consists of seven levels leading up to a sacred gate with breathtaking views.

Bali 10 day itinerary with Pura Lempuyang.

After you have finished exploring Pura Lempuyang, take some time to relax on Amed beach and watch the beautiful sunset.

For dinner make sure to check out Warung Enak. This beach-side restaurant offers western as well as local dishes with fresh seafood options.

After dinner, you can end your evening at Jemulek viewpoint.

Tips For Visiting Bali

Now that we’ve covered the complete Bali Itinerary 10 Days , it’s time to go over a few tips that you should know to help get the most out of your Bali trip!

Avoid Bali Belly

Bali Belly is no joke! Make sure to wash your hands regularly and avoid eating at stalls that aren’t turning over food quickly. And for heaven’s sake Don’t drink the tap water in Bali.

For a more detailed scoop see Bali belly: How to Avoid and Treat.

Indulge in the Balinese Cuisine

Enjoy the incredible Balinese cuisine options. One of the great perks of Bali is the incredible international food selection. From street food to fine dining, Bali has something for everyone.

Make sure to try the traditional Indonesian sampler platter known as Nasi Campur. It’s the best way to try a variety of authentic dishes all at once! Nasi Goreng or “fried rice” is also a popular choice that you’ll find available at nearly every Indonesian restaurant or warung.

Respect Local Customs in Bali

Living here in Bali, unfortunately, we have seen too many tourists disregarding local customs and traditions. Remember that you are a guest in this beautiful country and should respect the culture by dressing conservatively when visiting temples (no shorts, tank tops, or tight clothing), being mindful of your actions, and making sure to never take anything from any of the Balinese temples.

Go Early to Beat the Crowds

Bali is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and can get quite crowded at some of the more popular sites. To beat the crowds, make sure to go early in the morning or late in the evening and avoid going during peak tourist times (over Christmas/New Year’s).

Traffic is also a problem in Bali so limiting your travel time to early in the mornings or late in the evenings will allow you to spend more time exploring and less time in traffic.

Learn a Few Words

Bahasa Indonesian is the national language spoken by most of the locals in Bali. Make sure to learn a few words in Bahasa before you leave. Here are a few to get you started:

Terimakasih – Thank you

Sama Sama – You’re welcome

Selamat datang – Welcome

Ya – Yes

Tidak – No

Sampai Jumpa – Goodbye

Be Careful Around the Monkeys

Monkeys are everywhere in Bali and they are super cute but don’t be fooled – they can get aggressive. Make sure to always keep your food away from them and never try to touch or feed one!

Have Cash On Hand

While most larger restaurants and hotels accept credit cards, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand. Many smaller shops and markets still only accept cash as payment so make sure you have some Indonesian Rupiah in your wallet!

How much money should you bring to Bali for 10 days?

What To Pack For 10 Days in Bali

There are only two seasons in Bali: wet and dry. Check the Bali weather by month before you go to get a good idea about how much rain you can expect. But, no matter when you visit Bali you can expect the temperatures to average in the low to mid-80s Fahrenheit.

Here is a quick list of items you should make sure to pack for your 10 days in Bali:

  • Light, breathable clothing
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • A hat or visor
  • Comfortable sandals
  • Swimsuit (maybe 2 or 3)
  • Sarong – great for temple visits!
  • Rain jacket or poncho
  • Water bottle

Best 10 day Bali holiday.

Bali is a beautiful destination to explore and with the right preparation, you can make sure your 10 days in Bali are full of fun, adventure, and relaxation. From avoiding Bali belly to indulging in traditional Balinese cuisine and respecting local customs, there’s plenty for visitors to do while exploring this amazing place. Make sure to go early or late to beat the crowds, learn some words in Bahasa Indonesian before visiting, be careful around monkeys, have cash on hand at all times, and pack appropriately so that you’re ready for whatever comes your way! With these tips under your belt you’ll surely have an unforgettable experience during your time here.

Best places to stay in Bali

Here’s a map of the best areas to stay in Bali. And as you can see, most of the popular places are located in the south. So while we hear about over-tourism, there is still so much island to explore off the beaten path.

Aerial view of two large resorts with pools right on Seminyak Beach, one of the best places to stay in Bali.

Seminyak, Legian and Kuta are the main tourist drag in Bali and where most people kick off their holiday on the Island of Gods. What was once three separate villages have now blended into one large developed area, with Kuta furthest south and Seminyak to the north.

Seminyak, being the more upscale choice of the three, boasts high-end boutiques, restaurants, spas and luxury accommodations. Not surprisingly, my favorite thing to do in Seminyak is shopping. Bali Boat Shed and Drifter Surf Shop are two OG’s you must check out.

Go for breakfast at Kynd Community, do some people-watching at Potato Head Beach Club, enjoy lunch at Sea Circus, get a gold facial, sip some sunset cocktails at La Plancha and get your Mexican fix at Motel Mexicola.

Where to stay in Seminyak

You’ll find some of the island’s nicest villas in Seminyak. But be aware of the location of the villa or hotel you book. Anything on the east side of Sunset Road isn’t worth it for a short stay. It’s such a hassle to get around from there.

Best budget accommodation – Lotus Tirta Seminyak Hotel

Best mid-range accommodation – Villa Mia Seminyak and Hidden Gem Villa

Best luxury accommodation – The Legian Seminyak

A row of sunbeds with red and white umbrellas on Kuta Beach, one of the best areas to stay in Bali for backpackers.

If raging nights out clubbing wearing Bintang singlets is more your scene, then you can head to Kuta. Well, you really shouldn’t but if you’re going to anyway, please be aware of the super cheap drinks and pickpockets.

Kuta is the OG on the Bali budget travel scene. Unfortunately, it is today run down by sleazy bars, beach hawkers and Magic Mushroom dealers. Think of it as the Magaluf of Bali. I don’t want to be mean, I still head down to Kuta sometimes to shop at the surf brand stores or Beachwalk Mall.

If neither of the two tickles your fancy, Legian might be your best bet. Cheaper than Seminyak, but a little calmer than what Kuta has become.

I love to go shopping along Legian Street, where you’ll find a mix of boutiques, brand stores and souvenir stalls. And be sure to check out Benih Cafe for breakfast. Don’t get stuck in this area though, especially if you want a relaxing beach holiday, Bali has so much more to offer!

Where to stay in Kuta & Legian

Best budget accommodation – Adys Inn and Fourteen Roses Beach Hotel

Best mid-range accommodation – Mamaka by Ovolo

View of people walking along Batu Bolong Beach in Canggu on a sunny day, one of the best places to stay in Bali.

On the west coast, a short drive north from Seminyak, you’ll find the laid-back surfer village of Canggu. If you are a surfer, creative person or just like to let’s say observe the long-haired, scruffy, tanned surfers, chances are you’re going to love it here.

The place where I saw more cows than people on my first visit, has developed at a rapid speed into a trendy area favored by ex-pats. Enjoy breakfast at hotspots like Betelnut or Crate Cafe, Nasi Goreng at one of the local warungs, afternoon drinks at Old Man’s and a seaside BBQ dinner at Echo Beach .

Don’t forget to check out Deus Ex Machina Temple of Enthusiasm on Tuesdays for tacos and free tattoos and on Sundays for a pumping Sunday Session with live music.

Where to stay in Canggu

Accommodation ranges from basic homestays with no internet presence to high-end luxury villas. I would definitely stay in a villa in Canggu if I were you, as there are so many stunning and affordable options to choose from.

Best budget accommodation – Roomates Hostel Canggu

Best mid-range accommodation – D’djabu Villas Canggu and Bohemian private villa

Best luxury accommodation – Tugu Hotel Bali

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Sunrise at Tegalalang Rice Terrace in Ubud

One hour Northeast of Canggu you’ll find Ubud , a town often referred to as the green heart of Bali. Not only a paradise for yogis, vegetarians and vegans, Ubud is also the island’s cultural and spiritual center. Thanks to the movie Eat, Pray, Love, Ubud has become a lot more touristy in recent years.

But don’t let that stop you from visiting, as most tourists seem to keep to central Ubud and Monkey Forest Road. Speaking of the Monkey Forest , the monkeys can be aggressive, so be careful and leave everything except your camera outside.

Stay at one of the many homestays to get the most out of your visit, and enjoy mouthwatering meals at restaurants like Melting Wok Warung, Locavore and Watercress Cafe.

Go for a morning stroll at the Campuhan Ridge Walk , join one of the many bicycle tours , shop at Ubud Art Market  or visit some of the beautiful temples and waterfalls the region has to offer. Ubud is the perfect base from which to explore what I would call the “real” Bali.

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Sunset dinner on Jimbaran Beach

Located on Bali’s west coast, on the narrow part that connects the mainland with the Bukit Peninsula, Jimbaran offers a secluded beach area dotted with seafood restaurants and colorful fishing boats.

What was once a sleepy fishing village has over the last decade turned into a tourist hub with several high-end hotel chains such as the Four Seasons putting down roots close to the main beach.

During the day Jimbaran Beach is a haven for lovers of the sun and sea. Come evening the sunbeds are swapped out in favor of tables, chairs and white linens to get ready for the daily sunset seafood feast.

A visit to the fish markets is often included in the itinerary when you book a cooking class such as this one . So if you feel like a little break from the beach, I can highly recommend joining a cooking class. It is so much fun and Indonesian/Balinese food is just so darn tasty!

If you continue along the coast south from Jimbaran Bay you’ll find a secluded beach with a cave and natural pools called Tegal Wangi and right next to it the Instafamous Rock Bar at Ayana Resort and Spa.

The large limestone peninsula, connected to the rest of the island by a sliver of land just south of the airport, is called the Bukit Peninsula. This is where you’ll find all the best beaches in Bali .

On the west side, you find towering cliffs and world-class surf breaks, while on the east side, luxury resorts and calm beaches.

Since the west side of the Bukit is my favorite place in Bali, I decided to go into a bit more detail about the different beach areas.

Balangan   Beach

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Balangan Beach Viewpoint

Balangan is a beautiful beach northwest on the Bukit favored by surfers. The break that was saved from a major development in the early 90s, is a left-hand reef break best suited for intermediate to expert surfers.

The atmosphere of the beach and the village itself is very relaxed and welcoming. The northern part of the beach is best for swimming and that is also where you find the incredible viewpoint you see above.

Enjoy some Mie Goreng and a Bintang at the beach, accompanied by some reggae tunes and probably one of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see.

You can stay with the locals down in the warungs on the beach (about 100-200k a night) or you can stay on top of the cliff in nicer hotels. Nowadays you’ll find something for every wallet and preference,  Flowerbud Bungalow and Brothers Bungalows being my personal favorites.

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Dreamland Beach in South Bali

This stunning stretch of sand first became popular among surfers in the early 70s. They quickly named it Dreamland because of its soft, powdery sand, turquoise water and good waves.

Dreamland is undeniably one of Bali’s most beautiful beaches, but sadly because of the Pecatu Graha Indah “New Kuta” development, it looked like a nightmare for many years due to abandoned construction sites.

It has come a long way in recent years, and finally, many of the hotels have been completed. These days you’ll have to pay a fee for both parking and to enter the beach. Expect to pay a 5000 IDR entrance fee and 200,000 IDR for an umbrella and two beach chairs.

The beach is great for both swimming and surfing, especially for intermediate surfers on days when the other breaks further south get too big. However, due to all the massive resorts, I don’t like staying here so I have no good recommendations.

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Bingin Beach in South Bali

Bingin is another beautiful sandy beach just south of Dreamland. The beach is not easy to access as you have to get down a steep set of stairs, but the ocean views alone make the sweaty descent worthwhile.

Enjoy dragon bowls at The Cashew Tree, some fresh juice and smoothies at Kelly’s Warung and some yummy pizza at Pizzeria Italia. If in need of some more sophistication check out El Kabron Spanish Restaurant & Cliff Club for delicious food, some people watching and a sick sunset.

Treat yourself to breathtaking accommodation like Sal Secret Spot  and BoHo Bingin Beach  on top of the cliff. For cheaper but also beautiful options check out Bingin Bienvenue Guest House or Mama Tom Toms on the cliffside. Bingin is my favorite spot in Bali when it comes to stunning places to stay, a bohemian paradise.

Padang Padang

Early morning at the stunning Pink Coco Hotel in Padang Padang - Bali budget breakdown

Just north of Uluwatu, you’ll find Padang Padang , yet another beautiful white sandy beach with quite a few steep steps. I usually end up here when staying in Uluwatu as it’s only a short drive away and mostly no stones/reef in the water. Perfect for a morning swim before the crowds take over.

Be aware of the monkeys, they are sometimes very interested in sunglasses and other shiny things. If you’d rather get your tan on away from the sand, rent a poolside sun lounger from one of the warungs on the cliffside.

While in the area you have to try Bukit Cafe for breakfast, The Loft for lunch and  La Baracca for dinner.

My favorite place to stay in Padang Padang is Pink Coco , an adults-only hotel set just 30 meters up the road from the beach. Because it’s pink with green pools and palm trees. Need I say more?

D’Padang Homestay is a more affordable option. Or if you can afford it, the inanely beautiful The Luxe Bali sits on top of the cliff overlooking the beach.

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Uluwatu Cliff in South Bali

Located at the Southwestern tip of the Bukit is one of my favorite places in the world, Uluwatu . Main attractions in the area include Pura Uluwatu or the “ monkey temple “, one of the most scenic temples in all of Bali where you can see traditional Kecak dance at sunset.

And of course the world-famous surf break “Ulu’s”, a left-hander best suited for experienced surfers. You can reach Suluban beach through the cave on low tide, it’s a really cool place worth a visit.

The big party at Single Fin on Sundays attracts a huge crowd from all over the island. Arrive early, preferably before sunset, or reserve a table if you want a place to sit.

Two great places to stay are Three Monkeys Villas and Masa Kini 3-bedroom villa with a private pool, just a minute walk from the cliff.

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Nusa Dua Beach

Nusa Dua , located on the east side of the Bukit Peninsula, may have the nicest white sandy beaches in all of Bali. But in my opinion, it can get a bit boring for young travelers.

The beaches are lined with large all-inclusive resorts, which is great for honeymooners, older couples or families with small children. So if a lazy beach vacation is primarily what you want, this may be the area for you.

My sister and I once spent millions and millions of Rupiah on a 50m 2 hotel room in a huge resort with a private beach. Just two days into our five-day stay we decided to go back to a crappy homestay in Padang Padang because we were so bored. However, in 20 years time, this might be exactly what we want.

So as I mentioned earlier, it all depends on what you want out of the stay. Apparently, I’m not comfortable with being waited on hand and foot and just laying around on a beach all day.

For around 300$ a night you can stay in the cheapest room at the world-famous resort The Mulia Nusa Dua Suites . For a more budget-friendly option check out the super cute bungalows at Kubu Dimel Homestay .

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Sanur Beach

Sanur , the first developed beach resort area in all of Bali, is located on the eastern side of the island just opposite Kuta and south of Denpasar. The former fishing village boasts a calm and relaxing atmosphere with a mix of large resorts, villas and homestays.

Sanur is also the gateway for those who want to snorkel and explore the nearby islands of Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan and Nusa Penida.

Sanur’s entire coast is lined with golden sand beaches dotted with colorful boats and sun loungers. The water is usually calm which makes it perfect for swimming and water sports like jet skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and parasailing.

If you need a break from the sand and sea go for a stroll along the paved boardwalk and sit down for a delicious meal at Sala Bistro , Genious Cafe or Soul on the Beach .

Another great thing to do in Sanur is to explore Pasar Sindhu Night Market for some mouthwatering and affordable traditional Indonesian dishes. From fresh juices to deep-fried everything, I’m sure you’re going to find something that will make your tastebuds tingle.

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Pink and yellow sunset over Jemeluk Bay in Amed

East Bali is one of my favorite regions to escape to for a couple of days when I need a break from the crowds in the south. Some of the island’s most beautiful landmarks call these parts home, including Pura Lempuyang and stunning water palaces with intricate sculptures, towering fountains and gorgeously green lotus ponds.

Set on a lush hillside south of Mount Agung, Sidemen village is one of the highlights of the Karangasem Regency. Despite the overdevelopment of some parts of the island, this little village is unknown to many tourists. It is one of my favorite places in Bali and a great alternative to the now famous Jatiluwih Rice Terraces .

I come to East Bali mainly to relax inland amongst lush jungles, impressive rice fields and old palaces. However, there are some pearls scattered along the coast worth visiting as well, like Amed, Candidasa and Keramas.

One hour further south you’ll find Candidasa, one of the oldest and most popular beach resorts along the east coast. It is the perfect place for you if you’re after a relaxing beach escape away from the crowds of the south. Don’t forget to check out the Lotus Lagoon when you’re there. It is such a beautiful and serene place!

Continue down the coast for another hour and you’ll reach Keramas Beach, a beautiful black stretch of sand favored by surfers. One of the hotspots in the area with a prime location right in front of the surf break is Komune Beach Club at the Komune Resort . Chill out around the oval pool, watch movies on open-air cinema night or go night surfing when the waves are lit up by the permanent floodlights. So cool!

On the northeast coast, Amed and Tulamben attract divers from all over the world. Both are old fishing villages with traditional Jukung boats lining the black sandy shore. It is, however, the underwater world that makes this area so special. Colorful corals, fishes in all shapes and sizes, turtles and of course the famous USS Liberty shipwreck.

🌟 Private Bali Highlights Tour

North Bali consists mainly of the district of Buleleng. Singaraja is the largest city and the former colonial capital of Bali, where you can visit the Royal Palace built in 1604. Just 15 minutes west lies Lovina, a string of villages and the main tourist resort area on the north coast.

Highlights include wild dolphin-watching tours, lush nature reserves, magnificent temple sites and a collection of fine waterfalls dotting its highlands.

Dutch colonists were drawn to the north around Munduk to escape the coastal heat. Traces of their colonial-style architecture can still be found here today. Some have even been turned into boutique hotels and guesthouses. Because the village is located at one of the highest points on the island, you’ll find great spots for watching both sunrise and sunset.

Hiking is the big call card here and it’s easy to see why with a maze of paths and trails leading through the jungle to hidden villages and spectacular waterfalls. Munduk Waterfall is located on the outskirts of the village and two of Bali’s most beautiful waterfalls, Banyumala and Sekumpul , are only a 20 and 50-minute drive away.

Ulun Danu Beratan, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Bali, is another place you shouldn’t miss when you visit the northern part of the island. The temple sits on the edge of Lake Beratan with a picturesque mountain range in the background. It’s the perfect place to get some stunning photos, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Where to stay in Bali: A complete guide to the different areas on the island - Aerial view of Northwest Bali

Jembrana Regency with the capital city of Negara, covers most of Bali’s northwest. If you travel by ferry from Java, this is where you’ll start your journey on the Island of Gods. The distance between the two islands is only 4 km. Although one-sixth of the island’s population lives in West Bali , this vast region is often overlooked by tourists.

The northwest coast from Menjangan Island to Pemuteran Bay is probably the best spot for diving and snorkeling in Bali. The calm sea is free of currents and offers a safe opportunity to explore the reefs. If a more active holiday is what you’re after you should check out Barat National Park which is mountainous and has rain forest, mangrove forest, savanna and as well as sandy beaches.

Continue south along the west coast and you’ll soon reach Medewi, home to some of the longest waves in Bali. The little village offers glimpses of a different side of Bali with rice fields, children playing in the streets, warungs where you can still get a meal for a few dollars and long, empty black beaches.

Speaking of black beaches, Balian Beach is another remote stretch of sand and a popular surf spot on the west coast. Its collection of cheap and laidback accommodation options has also attracted backpackers for a while now.

Some of the most unique attractions in West Bali include a majestic Banyan tree in Manggissari with roots forming an arch that you can drive through if you dare. And an impressive church with an intricate design that can only be described as a blend of Balinese and Gothic architecture, located in Palasari village.

And Nusa Penida has gained popularity at a rapid speed in recent years due to its unique landscape. Both are included in my 2-week Bali itinerary .

I decided to leave Denpasar, the capital, out of this guide as I haven’t spent much time there nor do I think there is any reason to spend time there during your holiday unless you have business to attend to.

There are so many insanely beautiful accommodation options in Bali. I don’t think any other destination comes close to this range of options. So if the hotel you stay in is more important than the area, these are my favorite hotels in Bali.

Man and woman wearing traditional Balinese clothing driving on a scooter on an empty road with greenery on both sides. How to get around during your 2-week Bali itinerary

The main modes of transportation in Bali are scooters or motorbikes as the locals call them, private drivers and rideshares.

Uber is not available in Bali, so you can use local ride-sharing apps like Grab and GoJek to get around if you don’t want to drive. Even these are banned in some areas by the taxi mafia but should be mo

Rent a scooter

I love driving around on the backroads in Bali feeling the sun on my skin and the wind in my hair. If you’re comfortable on a scooter I recommend renting one to get around locally. I always drive a scooter in Uluwatu, Canggu, Ubud and Nusa Lembongan.

You can easily ask your accommodation to arrange a scooter for you. It usually costs around 75.000 IDR a day, if you rent for longer periods of time you can bargain the price down a bit.

Just make sure your travel insurance covers you and look out for scams run by both the police and renters. Read more about it in my article about common scams in Bali and things not to do in Bali .

You can also get a scooter delivered to your hotel or homestay. All of this is included in the rental:

  • Helmet for max 2 persons
  • full tank of gas (petrol) upon delivery
  • 24/7 road-side assistance
  • Mobile phone holder
  • First-aid kit and rain poncho (for maximum 2 people)

With a private driver

When I’m doing day trips, traveling across the island and on days it’s supposed to rain, I often  book this driver .

You can, of course, drive your scooter as well, however, for longer distances I prefer to enjoy the landscape from the comfort of an air-conditioned and dry car.

This is a super affordable full-day customizable tour, which means you have the driver for 10 hours and you can go where you want. It’s the perfect option if it’s your first time in Bali and there are a lot of places on your  Bali bucket list .

Frequently Asked Questions Bali

The best time to visit Bali is from February to April (avoid Easter). That’s when everything is green after the rainy season, and the weather is mostly sunny. There are generally fewer people during this time as well.

Bali experiences two distinct seasons, the rainy season and the dry season. I have visited Bali during every month of the year, several times, and rarely experienced rain for more than a few days at a time.

The rainy season in Bali runs from November to March. During this time, the weather is more humid and rainy, with occasional thunderstorms and heavy downpours. The upside of visiting during the wet season is that prices are lower and crowds are smaller, making it a good time to visit if you’re on a budget.

The dry season in Bali runs from April to October, while the peak tourist season is from July to August and around Christmas, so expect higher prices and larger crowds during this time.

Yes and no. It depends on what kind of traveler you are. Bali can cater to a wide range of budgets, offering options for both luxury travelers and those seeking more affordable experiences.

It is definitely still possible to travel Bali on a budget, by eating local food from warungs and staying in homestays.

I’m more of a mid-range traveler, I like comfortable accommodation and mix fancy restaurants with delicious Balinese food. I spent $904 during my last trip to Bali, and that included an activity and some shopping.

If it’s your first time in Bali, you should budget a little more for activities. Read more in my complete Bali budget breakdown .

Please don’t drink unfiltered tap water in Bali, it contains bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms due to the poor condition of pipes and the tropic climate. Under no circumstances should you fill up a regular water bottle using water from the sink. You will pay the price for it later.

On the other hand, I have always brushed my teeth in tap water and had drinks with ice cubes in everything from upscale restaurants to local warungs.

Also, please keep plastic water bottles to a minimum as there are waste management issues in most areas on the island. Bring or buy a filtered water bottle or at least a reusable bottle, many hotels and cafés offer free water refills these days.

My favorite filtered water bottle for travel, backpacking, hiking. LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle.

🌟 LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle

My favorite bottle for travel, backpacking and hiking.

You can fill it up anywhere, LifeStraw filters bacteria, parasites, chemicals and microplastics.

Bali is generally considered a safe destination for solo travelers. The island is known for its welcoming and hospitable culture, and most solo travelers find Bali to be a comfortable and enjoyable place to explore independently.

Private transport is affordable and it’s easy to meet other like-minded people. Especially if you’re staying in a hostel or a digital nomad /creative working from coworking spaces .

However, you should keep your wits about you like you would any other place. Some people want to make a quick buck off you and you will encounter the same scams you see all over Southeast Asia. I don’t recommend walking home alone at night, and keep your hands on your valuables at all times.

Yes, English is widely spoken in Bali. Particularly in areas that are popular with tourists and among the younger generation. Additionally, signs, menus, and other information aimed at tourists are often available in English.

In Balinese, “thank you” is expressed as “suksma” or “matur suksma.” Both of these phrases are commonly used to convey gratitude and appreciation in the Balinese language and culture.

Bahasa, the official language of Indonesia, is also widely spoken and understood in Bali, especially in more formal and official settings, as well as in interactions with visitors and tourists.

“Thank you” in Bahasa Indonesia is “terima kasih.”

Politeness is very important to the Balinese, so learning a few phrases in Balinese or Bahasa will get you a long way.

So many great ideas in here. Thanks for putting it together. 🙂

Traveling to Bali for the first time in October for my honeymoon – looking for a good combination of adventure, romance and relaxation. We have 18 days in the area – thinking 3 in Seminyak , 5 on Gili T, 5 in Ubud, 3 on Nusa Lembongan and 3 in Jimbaran. Thoughts on our itinerary or any must dos that we shouldn’t miss out on?

Also – having never driven a moped before — are they safe enough on the island?

First of all congratulations on getting married!! And thank you for your comment 🙂 I would definitely make time for a visit to the west coast of the Bukit Peninsula! The view from Uluwatu cliffs is a MUST see! And all the little surfing villages like Padang Padang, Bingin and Balangan is where you’ll have the kind of relaxing beach holiday I think people picture when thinking of Bali. Maybe you could do a day trip down when you’re in Jimbaran, as it’s not too much happening there other than seafood dinners at the beach. The beach in Seminyak is crazy busy with tourists and hawkers so I tend to stay away and hang by a pool whenever I’m there. If you’re spending 5 days in Ubud you’ll have plenty of time to go on some excursions. I would recommend joining a bicycle tour with Jegeg Bali Cycling you get to see the backstreets of Ubud and then have lunch inside their family compound. This is still one of the highlights of all my time in Bali, even though I usually don’t like organized tours. Maybe also hire a driver and see the Jatiluwih Rice Fields, which is one of the most picturesque and serene places on the island. I myself isn’t a big fan of Gili T, it’s always crowded and quite loud. Nusa Lembongan is the gem in my eyes. But most people I’ve talked to either love it or hate it, so maybe you’ll love it 😉 The traffic in Bali is crazy, but for the most part it’s not moving too fast. I’ve seen a couple of moped accidents, but I’ve never had any trouble myself. I feel totally safe driving in Ubud, Nusa Lembongan and on the smaller streets of Seminyak and the Bukit. You should be fine as it’s easy to get the hang of it, just stay away from the major roads. Be sure to drive over the yellow bridge from Lembongan to Nusa Ceningan, it’s so stunning! Hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

Hey Charlotte. Thank you so much for this guide. Really helping me out for my bali trip early july. Planning for two weeks. At first wanted to cover Kuta / Seminyak but after reading this I have decided I might not go there.

So far I have planned to spend the following in order of travel:

4 days in uluwatu 3 days in ubud (planning for the cycling expedition you mentioned) 4 days in Padangbai for diving. 5 days in hand which I plan to explore Gili and Lombok depending where I like most. Should I stay in Kuta for a day or sth? Anything special that I can’t experience in others I am planning to visit?

P.S: just followed you on instagram. Lovely posts!

Thank you for your comment! Happy to hear that you found my guide useful!

I would stay away from Kuta (nothing worth mentioning happens there) and only stop by Legian/Seminyak if you want a good choice of restaurants and shops! That’s not where you’ll find the Bali most people dream about. Also accommodation in Seminyak is quite expensive. If you are thinking of staying in that area I would go just a bit further north to Canggu. There you’ll find everything from budget homestays to luxury villas. Also a lot of fun and happening restaurant and bars where you can meet other travelers. The vibe is much more relaxed and easy going than in Seminyak. It’s my favorite place in all of Bali!

I think it’s great that you’ve included Uluwatu in your itinerary, from there you can drive your motorbike to the beautiful beaches of Padang Padang, Balangan and Bingin.

The Gilis are stunning, but very small so they can get a bit boring. The south coast of Lombok (Kuta area), not Senggigi, is where you should spend your time in my eyes, it’s so incredibly beautiful. You can drive around by yourself discovering deserted beaches all day and then meet other travelers in town at night. I love the feeling of just driving not knowing where you’ll end up, that’s how I’ve found some of my favorite spots. The south coast isn’t crowded like Gili T and Gili Air. But of course if your planning on partying non stop, then Gili T is your best bet 😉

If you end up going to Lombok I would join one of the waterfall hiking tours! Also a good tip would be to arrange a driver from your accommodation to pick you up at the harbor, as the drivers there will probably quote you a ridiculous price!

Feel free to ask if you have any further questions! Have a great trip 🙂

Hi Charlotte I am heading out to Bali in October for a wedding. We have a week in Sanur beach for the wedding and then we are struggling which bits to go to from there for the second week. I have ubud, uluwatu, canggu, nusa lembongan and the Gilis on my list. Ideally we would like beaches, trekking, swimming and relaxing in the day ideally with beachfront accomodation and then a choice of good places in the evening to eat and drink. We would like to finish off the holiday with a few nights of luxury. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

26. August 2016 at 14:26

Hi Kim! This is so hard, as there are so many places I love and want everyone to experience! But if you only have one week I wouldn’t go all the way to the Gilis. Even though the boat ride is only two hours long, it usually ends up taking at least half a day one way. I would spend a couple of nights on Lembongan, where there are so many hotels to choose from right on the beach. Then go back to Bali and stay on the Bukit for a couple of nights, maybe on gorgeous Bingin beach. From there you can easily drive a scooter down to Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Balangan. Then I would spend the last days in Canggu. From there you could maybe do a day trip to Ubud and go on a hike? That’s what I would do. But if you are after some real luxury, maybe ending the trip in Seminyak would be best for you guys. There you are spoilt for choice with high end hotels/villas, restaurants and happening bars. I don’t know if this were much help, so let me know if you have more questions! 🙂

15. February 2017 at 00:30

Hi Charlotte I am absolutely loving your little guides. Myself and my two best friends are heading to Bali for 11 days in April – low season yay! It’s not as much time as would have hoped due to conflicting schedules at work but I have been researching for weeks and would love your opinion! We will definitely be spending time in Ubud, Canggu, but are stuck for where else to go. We were thinking Jimbaran (we need to have one seafood dinner!), Uluwatu or Seminyak, or possibly two of those places? We also definitely want to go to the Gili Islands for a few days and POSSIBLY Lombok if time/expenses permit it. What are your opinions? And in which direction should we work our way around the island? Also in terms of scooters/motorbikes do we have to have a license for those? Thank you!

18. February 2017 at 14:15

Thank you Sarra! You’re gonna have so much fun 🙂

My best tip is to keep your hotel changes to a minimum, or else you will spend all your time going from one place to the next. Everything takes a long time here on the island. I would stay in Canggu, Ubud and Uluwatu(or Padang Padang/Bingin). From Canggu you can easily get a taxi to Seminyak if you want to do some shopping and fine dining. And the same from Uluwatu for your Jimbaran dinner. It’s a much more young and fun atmosphere down on the Bukit than in Jimbaran.

Even though I like Lombok much more than the Gilis, I think you have too little time to do both this time. Just going from the Gilis to Kuta, Lombok took me five hours last time. So much waiting.

I don’t think there is one better order or direction to go, just don’t save the Gilis for last. Sometimes the boats get canceled due to bad weather, so you don’t want to miss your flight because of it. Remember to ask your hotel to pick you up at the airport, so you don’t have to haggle for prices when you land.

You are supposed to get a license when you get here, but I don’t think anyone actually does. No one has ever asked me to see my license from home either. I haven’t had any problems so far!

Thank you for your reply! Since my last message I’ve definitely decided that it’s better we just stay in Canggu, Ubud and Uluwatu and just travel to other towns from there. Based on your guides, we’ve also decided to go to Nusa Lembongan instead of Lombok, as we believe it will give us a little more time and less time travelling! But we wouldn’t have known about the island if it wasn’t for your sweet guides – it looks so serene and stunning! & thank you for the information about scooters- I was definitely worried they’d be checking licenses all the time.

Thanks for creating this! I found it super useful because I was looking at the beaches in Nusa Dua but would hate to be stuck with honeymooners!

Thanks Megan, so happy to hear that! Nusa Dua do have some beautiful beaches, so my advice would be to take a day trip there while staying in Uluwatu 😉

Hi Charlotte This was such an awesome read. My first experience to Bali was July 2016 and sadly we only stayed one week. The group we were with were only interested in the tourist activities (excluding a visit to Ubud!) and I felt myself missing out on the essence of Bali. So I’ve gone out on a limb, as a solo female traveler this time, to really explore Bali properly. I’ll be doing 3 weeks in peak season mid Dec 2017 – Jan, unfortunately, as it was the best I could do regarding work. I don’t know if I have enough time but I would love to go 360 around the island and I don’t hear much mention of the northern regions. I really don’t know how to go about structuring my 3 week itinerary but would love to see as much as possible without over doing it. I’m an adventurer at heart and doing the volcano hikes and waterfall searches are high up on the list. I love yoga and good food and serene places but I also have a budget so don’t care too much for fancy accommodation. Christmas and New Year locations and activities are also concerns of mine, yikes what have I done! Help!

This is such a brilliant, thorough guide…and now I want to be back in Bali on this cold London morning! East Bali was probably my favourite…Amed was such a gem with its black sand beach and Gunung Agung looming overhead. Definitely lots more for me to explore though!

I do too!! Yes even though I’ve been to Bali 10 times now I always find something new to do 🙂

What a lovely guide on where to stay in Bali, I’m not sure I could make a decision when the trip comes though haha! So much choice and everywhere looks so beautiful. I think I’d love East Bali as it looks a lot less busy and I do get tired of crowds fairly quickly!

20. October 2019 at 13:27

Haha, I agree it’s not easy to choose! And yes, East Bali is definitely great for escaping the crowds now and again 😉

THE BEST REGIONS TO VISIT IN BALI, INDONESIA

This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a small commission when you make a purchase using our link.

The island of Bali may be relatively small, but there are so many things to do in Bali, and it offers so much diversity from region to region. From the shopping and dining in Seminyak, nightlife in Kuta, surfing in Uluwatu, to the markets and rice terraces around Ubud and the stunning waterfalls in North Bali.

Bali has so much to offer that many people find it difficult to decide which region to visit. Having visited Bali eight times (it’s practically a second home for many Aussies), I decided to write a guide on the different regions of Bali. This guide should help anyone looking to travel to Bali for the first time, to determine which areas to visit.

I usually recommend spending at least two weeks in Bali , as the perfect amount of time to really experience the different sides of this beautiful island. Use this guide to pick a few different destinations and spend a few days in each place. But be warned, a lot of people fall in love with Bali after a few days, let alone two weeks! You’ll probably want to plan another escape back there as soon as you get home.

If there were three words to describe Seminyak, it would be – shopping, nightlife and food! Seminyak seems to have it all, a few days here could keep any holidaymaker entertained with plenty of world-class dining options, nightclubs filled with party-goers almost every evening and so many boutique shops that will delight your inner shopaholic.

Seminyak is possibly one of the most popular places in Bali, with the accommodation options ranging from upmarket luxury hotel chains, such as The W Hotel Bali and The Seminyak Beach Resort and Spa , affordable mid-range hotels situated a few blocks back from the beach, and small privately-owned villas.

The dining scene in Seminyak is out of this world, with arguably some of the best restaurants in South-East Asia. Motel Mexicola is a popular hotspot with, you guessed it, great Mexican food. Around the corner is the ever-popular breakfast and lunch cafe, Sea Circus . If it’s Italian food that you’re after, you can’t go past Da Maria . And for good coffee – check out Revolver Espresso .

Loud, brash and debaucherous, Kuta is known as the hotspot for nightlife in Bali. The glamorous nightclubs draw partygoers with offerings from world-class DJ’s spinning sets on a nightly basis. Beware that Kuta is known for parties that go on well into the dawn hours and can suck you into harder nightclub scene.

But one of the biggest draw-cards of Kuta is the fabulous beach bars. Sink back into a bean bag on the beach, kick-back watching the sunset with a couple of insanely cheap beers while having your feet rubbed by a masseuse for $5. This town is sure to make you feel like an instant celebrity.

For many years, Canggu was a favourite hangout for Aussies who would visit Bali regularly. In recent years, Canggu has been ‘discovered’ by location independent millennials, who flock from all over the world to hit up the café scene and plethora of coworking spaces. Canggu offers a more easy-going pace than nearby Seminyak and Kuta.

In my opinion, Canggu has some of the best cafés in Bali. Milk and Madu is a popular local haunt, famous for their avocado on toast. Café Organic is a popular spot for smoothie bowls. Dues Ex Machina does coffee and motorbikes, a combo that goes together better than one would expect in Bali. Or try Peloton Supershop for delicious vegan food.

Related: An Insider Guide To The Best Cafes & Restaurants in Bali

The black sand beach in Canggu is nowhere near as nice as some other coastal areas of Bali, but what Canggu lacks in beautiful beaches, it makes up for with excellent beach clubs. Try the long-standing, ever-popular Finns Beach Club , or perhaps the laid-back style offered by The Lawn might be appealing to your style. For boho, gypsy picnic vibes, check out La Laguna .

Accommodation around Canggu is generally rental villas, most are owned by expats and rented out on Airbnb for a fraction of the cost of the hotels you’ll find around Seminyak. Many villas have their own private pool, perfect for a lazy poolside vacation – don’t forget to bring a good book! There are also many luxury hotel options, including Hotel Tugu , Aston Canggu Beach , and COMO Uma Canggu .

A haven for family holiday-makers, Nusa Dua is a stretch of idyllic white-sand beach coast lined with manicured resort hotels , featuring all the amenities. Nusa Dua can feel somewhat removed from the real Bali but offers a calm respite from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the island. Nightly cultural performances held inside the resort compounds offer a taste of the Balinese culture, without having to leave the hotel, even if it is a slightly superficial experience.

ULUWATU & BUKIT PENINSULA

With limestone cliffs that rise out of the dark blue Indian Ocean, you can’t go past Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula for surfing and stunning luxury clifftop resorts.

Uluwatu is the destination wedding and honeymoon haven of Bali, but don’t let that put you off. With some of the most luxurious and beautifully designed resorts in Bali, the Bukit Peninsula feels miles away from the busyness you’ll find elsewhere on the island. It’s the perfect place for a romantic holiday, relaxing with your significant other. Check out Alila Villas Uluwatu , The Edge Bali , or The Ungasan for super high-end luxury villas with killer views.

Uluwatu is dotted with beautiful white-sand and surf beaches, such as Padang Padang, Bingin, Dreamland and Balangan. Most require a somewhat precarious descent down steps carved into the cliffside to reach, but what awaits you at the bottom is well worth the effort. On your way back up, stop at one of the family-run surf bars built on the cliffs overlooking the famed Uluwatu break for a cold beer and delicious Indonesian food.

It’s also worth checking out some of the famed Beach Clubs around Uluwatu, namely, Sundays Beach Club , OMNIA Day Club and Karma Beach Club .

My personal favourite, Ubud has a little bit of everything. Fresh mountain air, waterfalls, adventure tours, excellent food, monkeys, stunning rice terraces, hotels and restaurants with great views, arts and crafts markets, yoga shalas, the list goes on.

Made famous by the book Eat Pray Love, Ubud is the place where many come for relaxation and healing. It’s been a haven for yogis for years, and expats travel from far and wide, choosing to settle here over the likes of Seminyak or Canggu, in favour of the peaceful jungle lifestyle.

The food scene in Ubud is top notch. Boasting everything from world-class restaurants run by Michelin starred chefs, to a plethora of plant-based cafes, great pizza places, coffee and burgers. There are places where you can dine overlooking the rice terraces or river, traditional Indonesian Warungs and even a cafe whose menu is devoted entirely to cocktails and desserts! In fact, there are so many great places to eat in Ubud , I wrote an entire foodie guide featuring 40 cafes, restaurants and bars.

Ubud is the artistic heart of Bali, with streets lined with art galleries and the famous Ubud Markets. Awe-inspiring performances where locals showcase their beautiful Balinese culture and traditions through a unique dance are staged nightly in the town centre.

But many people come to Ubud to see the stunning rice terraces – and see them you will, there are rice terraces everywhere! The most incredible ones being the Tegalalang Rice Terraces , a 20-minute drive from the centre of town.

CENTRAL MOUNTAINS OF BALI

Cheeky monkeys, refreshing waterfalls and stunning views await you in the mountains around Central Bali. Much more remote than the rest of Bali, the northern region offers excellent hiking, in particular, the peaks of Mount Agung and Mount Batur. At the time of writing, Bali’s tallest mountain, Mount Agung, was closed for hiking, due to volcanic activity, but Mount Batur offers stunning sunrise views towards the giant beauty.

Related:  6 Things You Need To Know Before Hiking Mount Batur

The area around Munduk offers cute little villages, rice terraces and stunning waterfalls, including Munduk, Git Git and Nungnung waterfalls. Also, be sure to check out the totally Instagrammable Wanagiri Hidden Hills, the gates at the Handara Golf Resort , and the beautiful Hindu temple situated on a lake called Pura Ulun Danu . The Jatiluwih Rice Terraces are also well worth a visit as they were recently deemed a UNESCO Heritage Site.

SANUR AND CANDIDASA

If you find Kuta and Seminyak too full-on and Nusa Dua too sleepy, then you will probably like Sanur. With a good mix of beaches, resorts, restaurants and culture, Sanur is well situated for day trips to Ubud, Uluwatu and East Bali.

The lovely 4km long beachfront boardwalk offers a taste of local-life, particularly on a Sunday morning when the Balinese flock to the beaches with their large families (and dogs). It curves past beachfront cafes, street food stalls, ocean huts and perfectly manicured resorts and villas.

Further to the North East is Candidasa, a sleepy diving area featuring a few world-class resorts set amongst the coconut groves, such as Amankila and Alila Manggis . Candidasa somewhat lacks the restaurant and café vibes of other areas on the island. Some sights to check out here include Tirta Gangga (water temple) and Pura Lempuyang with its incredible view of Mount Agung.

OTHER ISLANDS AROUND BALI

If you have more time and wish to check out some of the islands around Bali, you can’t go past a day trip to Nusa Penida for a view of the famous dinosaur head lookout or snorkel around its pristine bays. If you’re into diving and nightlife, check out Gili Trawangan (Gili T).

To experience the pristine beaches, with great diving, surfing and villages that Bali once used to embody before it was discovered by mass tourism, head to Lombok. Or perhaps the sleepiness, pristine beaches and turquoise waters of Gili Air and Gili Meno are your thing.

Nice summary! My husband and I are doing Nusa Dua and the islands nearby, Ubud and have two days left to fill on the itinerary. For those two days which one would you suggest between Seminyak or Canggu? Thanks in advance.

Hi Jaye, thanks for reading! It depends what you are more interested in. Seminyak is great for nicer restaurants and shopping, where Canggu is good for cool cafes, bars, and surfing. Can’t go wrong either way!

Travellerspoint

Kuta Beach, Indonesia

Kuta is known as the party capital of Bali and it’s very very westernized.

When I first visited years ago, there was no beach shopping mall with designer stores or a range of fabulous beachfront restaurants. But when I visited again in 2019, I was actually shocked by just how “not Bali” Kuta is!

But saying that, if you’re craving something more Americanized, or you want to go clubbing, then Kuta is a good place to be.

There’s also the famous Kuta Beachwalk, which is literally a beachside shopping mall right across the beach. It’s actually a nice place to cool down on days that are just too hot.

The beach itself now has a great sidewalk that goes on for kilometres, so you can walk along it, go on a run, etc, if you don’t feel like walking on the sand.

Plus, there are many street food vendors along the beach selling local favourites like bakso !

Top things to do in Kuta

  • Surfing: beginner surf in Kuta is great! We recommend booking a lesson with 27 Surf Bali , where you’ll get a private coach to teach you the fundamentals of surfing.
  • Party: There are quite a few bars and clubs that stay open late to party
  • Head to a Spa: Some of the cheapest spas in Bali are located in Kuta, I got a full body massage for £4 and my nails done for £2...bliss!

Best place to stay in Kuta

  • Budget: The Pavilion Hotel  ‍
  • Mid-range: Amnaya Resort ‍
  • Luxury: Hard Rock Cafe Hotel, you can’t beat a Hard Rock Cafe and the one in Kuta is pretty darn famous!

2. Seminyak

seminyak sunsets

Seminyak is one of the great places to visit in Bali for couples as well as families.

Seminyak for me has a little more class and sophistication to it and it’s home to a strip of the best beach bars and restaurants in Bali.

It’s probably one of my favourite places in Bali to visit .

It’s also a popular area among both local and foreign tourists, so it’s pretty fun as you can meet all sorts of people here.

The best way to explore Seminyak is on foot. Whether you’re staying the area or just visiting, skip the car and motorbike, and just… walk.

This way, you can pop in and out of all the shops, and trust me, there’s a lot!

From boutique shops, gelato stores, awesome cafes, and even night clubs, Seminyak has all you need and it caters wonderfully for vegans.

Top things to do in Seminyak

  • Hit up the spas: Seminyak is bursting with quality spas and brunch locations, so combine the two for a wonderful morning.
  • Head to a beach club: There are a variety of beach clubs and bars on the beach that allow you to enjoy the fantastic sunsets that Seminyak (Double six beach) provides.
  • Party: Mexicola is one of the hottest new bars in Seminyak to have a few drinks and a great night. Seminyak is home to lots of great bars, but they are much more expensive than say, those in Kuta!

  • Mid-range: Hotel Vila Lumbung ‍
  • Luxury: Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach

famous temple in uluwaru

I love Uluwatu for many reasons and it’s one of the great places to visit in Bali, especially if you want epic sunsets.

I still haven’t found a sunset that beats the one I experienced at Uluwatu Temple.

(On that note, this is one of Bali’s most famous temples, and don’t miss out on its breathtaking kecak fire dance performance ).

Uluwatu is also the “it spot” for intermediate surfers. The beaches here are home to some of the best waves on the island.

And the beaches in this area are all incredible!

They’re the type with white sand and turquoise blue waters , and a lot of them are surrounded by cliffs, making for quite a picturesque sight.

Then, there’s the iconic Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, or ‘GWK’ for short. It’s a 121-metre Vishnu monument that stands on a 46-metres pedestal. In other words, very tall and impressive.

Uluwatu is located in south of Bali, so you’ll either need to hire a driver, or ride a moped to visit.

Top things to do in Uluwatu

  • Visit Uluwatu temple for sunset: the most epic you will experience and you can watch the sunset dance show [Book your tickets here!]
  • Surf: Uluwatu is home to beautiful beaches and more advanced waves for those more experienced surfers
  • Visit Sundays Beach Club in Uluwatu: For the ultimate beach club experience!
  • Visit the epic Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park: holds one of the largest statues in the world, you can see it from Kuta beach!

Best places to stay in Uluwatu

  • Budget: Uluwatu jungle villa ‍
  • Mid-range: Radisson Blu Bali Uluwatu ‍
  • Luxury: Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa
Take a tour of the best spots in Uluwatu with this all-inclusive tour!

4. Balangan

Balangan Beach, Indoesia

Balangan is a small region of Bali located south west and it’s home to some of the bluest waters on Bali island.

Because you will soon notice, Bali doesn’t really have “pretty” waters or beaches, compared to say the Philippines, or even the Gili Islands and other areas of Indonesia

But in addition to the nearby Uluwatu, Balangan beach is absolutely beautiful.

Not to mention that it offers great surf.

If you’ve heard of Dreamland Beach, which is popular for surfers, Balangan Beach is pretty much next to it, separated only by a huge cliff rock.

It’s not very crowded compared to other more popular areas in Bali, making it the perfect place to stay if you want to chill, laze around, and enjoy the beach.

Top things to do in Balangan

  • Surf: another popular spot to surf in Bali, but we don’t recommend beginners to surf alone here
  • Visit the iconic Balangan viewpoint: an epic sunset spot!
  • Eat jaffle: this was the first place I discovered jaffles in Indonesia, so I have to include it

Best places to stay in Balagan

  • Budget: Brothers bungalows Balangan  ‍
  • Mid-range: Milo’s Home ‍
  • Luxury: Villa Bali Blue

5. Jimbaran

Jimbaran Beach, Indonesia

A beautiful seaside village or fishing town, Jimbaran offers tranquil beaches which are perfect for sunbathing.

There aren't any waves here (at least when I visited) so it was perfect for swimming too!

But what Jimbaran is truly known for is their incredible seafood.

People from all over the island would travel to Jimbaran just to enjoy the freshest, most diverse selection of seafood.

From king prawns and lobsters to mussels, various fishes, and calamari, you name it. This is where you can feast like a king.

It’s home to iconic fish markets where some of Bali’s most famous restaurants get their fish from daily.

And indeed, there’s nothing quite like the experience of an epic seafood dinner by the beach , which is a must-do in Jimbaran!

Top things to do in Jimbaran

  • Eat seafood by the beach at sunset: you can book your Jimbaran seafood dining experience via Klook. With the sounds of crashing waves and a golden sunset, it will be unforgettable!
  • Sunbathe on the beach. Jimbaran has 4 km of beautiful golden sands and lots of cute little warungs to grab lunch, so it’s the perfect place to spend a day.
  • Go on a fishing trip: try and be like the locals and catch your own lunch.
  • Discover the hidden Pandawa Beach: the blue waters and snorkelling opportunities here are nothing short of magical.

Best places to stay in Jimbaran:

  • Budget: Poedja Villa Jimbaran ‍
  • Mid-range: Fox Hotel, Jimbaran Beach ‍
  • Luxury: La Joya Biu Biu Resort

6. Buleleng

visit bali reddit

Buleleng is an area in north Bali that is home to some of the best waterfalls in Bali (which you can read all about here ), including Gitgit waterfall.

The capital of the area Singaraja is a great base for some unique Airbnbs (I can suggest sunset sala for the most epic accommodation among rice paddies).

Another major area in Buleleng province is Lovina, best known for the dolphins that swim freely in its beaches. And yes, you can swim with the dolphins!

Buleleng itself has a host of art galleries and cooking workshops, hot springs, temples, rice terraces, and scenic lakes.

Basically, it has a bit of everything!

And because it is located quite far out from the airport, it’s not as crowded as places like Kuta or Seminyak, which makes it a nice change of pace for when you want some quiet.

Top things to do in Buleleng

  • Swim with dolphins at Lovina Beach. Here’s a great dolphin watching and snorkelling tour you can try.
  • Visit epic waterfalls such as Aling Aling, Sekumpul and Gitgit [Take a Bali waterfall tour to visit the best falls in Bali!] . Check out this awesome waterfall tour that takes you to awesome, hidden spots.
  • Try canyoning. This is a unique adventure where you go through canyons by rappelling (abseiling), jumping, swimming, scrambling and sliding. Sounds fun? We recommend Canyoning Bali !
  • Enjoy epic sunsets with a Bintang beer in hand

Best places to stay in Buleleng

  • Budget: D’Kailash Retreat ‍

Sidemen is one of those rare, almost undiscovered places to visit in Bali.

It’s located quite close to Mount Agung, an active volcano that’s also the highest point on the island. So you can see the mountain range decorating the backdrop all over Sidemen.

Granted, it has gained a bit of traction recently, and there are certainly more tourists there than before, but it’s still relatively underrated and peaceful.

It holds the most beautiful rice paddies in all of Bali, which I think is way better than Ubud.

With its lush green landscapes and welcoming locals, Sidemen has such a welcoming and warm atmosphere that I love.

The accommodation options are filled with beautiful villas that are settled among the paddies and it’s just a dream.

Sidemen is also home to some of the island’s most talented silver smiths , and a lot of silver jewelry sold in gift shops around Bali comes from here. And you can actually attend a silver class and make your very own silver jewelry!

Top things to do in Sidemen

  • Go on a walking tour. We recommend this trekking experience on Viator , which takes you through rice fields, local villages, and riversides.
  • Take a silver class. A 2-hour workshop where you’ll learn to make silver jewelry from expert smiths! Sidemen Silver is one of the more well-known ones.
  • Go on the Sidemen Bali Swing. It’s essentially a giant swing with incredible rice paddy views.
  • Take a traditional cooking class. You can book a cooking class on GetYourGuide and learn how to cook 5 Balinese dishes from an experience local chef!
  • Stay at Villa Karma Loka

visit bali reddit

The Amlapura region is one of the less discovered areas of Bali and therefore one of the best places to visit in Bali if you’re looking for something different !

It’s located about 2 and half hour drive from Canggu, or less than 2 hours from Ubud.

It’s the regency seat of Karangasem on the eastern side of Bali and home to some stunning palaces, some of which are the residence of the local royal family!

This area is not very bustling and thus ideal if you want to escape the more crowded hotspots of Bali.

Top things to do in Amlapura

Sanur Beach, Indonesia

Sanur is located on the east coast of Bali and it’s one of the most popular places to visit in Bali for families.

This is thanks to the family-friendly resorts, the great beaches, and the popular water sports activities.

The most epic of them all is probably wakeboarding! You’re standing on a wakeboard and getting pulled around by a boat. It’s like surfing, but easier.

Kitesurfing is also a popular choice for water adventures in Sanur.

Sanur’s coastline runs about 8km, including Mertasari Beach, Segara Ayu Beach, Sindhu Beach, and more.

You can rent an e-bike (or regular bike) and cycle along the coasts.

If you’re into cultural sights, Le Mayeur Museum showcases the artwork of Brussels-born artist, Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur.

Oil paintings and local artifacts, and the building itself has traditional Balinese architecture.

There’s also Blanjong Temple, home to artefacts from AD 914, a turtle hatchery and conservatory, and even an 18-hole golf course.

The food scene in Sanur is nothing short of impressive too. You’ll find a good mixture of local street food, nice restaurants, and great cafes.

11. Lempuyang

bali gates of heaven

Lempuyang is a region which has grown in popularity over recent years due to the beautiful Bali Gates of Heaven, an iconic photo spot that when taken at the right time of day, gives you a backdrop of Mount Agung.

When I first visited Bali, this wasn’t even on the radar of things to do, now it’s too popular!

These “gates” are actually a Hindu temple called Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang , and of the most important ones in Bali.

Most people come to Lempuyang just for this temple, but there are actually other attractions nearby.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace is a complex of pools and fountains with koi fishes you can feed.

Then, there’s Bukit Cinta, a Mount Agung viewpoint where you can catch a magical sunrise .

Top Things to do in Lempuyang

  • Check out the Bali Gates of heaven [Read my post on everything you need to know about visiting] . We recommend this tour on Viator , which includes a visit to Lempuyang Temple, Tirta Gangga, and many more.

Amed is an area located on the north east coast of Bali, in the Karangasem Regency.

This is the spot to go for scuba diving and snorkelling .

Whether you’ve never gone diving before or are a seasoned diver, you really shouldn’t miss Amed.

The corals and underwater sceneries here are extraordinary , and some of the best you’ll find in the world.

But even if you don’t like diving, it’s home to some beautiful beaches, such as Amed Beach, Jemeluk Beach, and Lipah Beach.

There are plenty of nice resorts and hotels here and a great place to visit in Bali for families.

Amed is also known for its salt farmers, and you can visit the Sea Salt Farm to see first-hand the traditional process of extracting salt from seawater .

13. Kintamani (Mount Batur)

mount batur

So I’ve listed Mount Batur as one of the best places to visit in Bali, because you can visit the area without even hiking.

The mountain itself is located in Kintamani, where you can also find the beautiful Lake Batur and Pura Ulun Danu Batur, which is an important temple found on a tiny island in the middle of the lake !

The temple's name itself is a nod to the fact that it’s located on the lake, which represents the importance of water to the prosperity of the locals.

On the 10th full moon of every year, a huge, traditional ceremony known as odalan is held here.

There are tons of cute cafes with the most breathtaking mountain views in Kintamani. We recommend visiting one of them at around 5 am, just in time to catch the sunrise!

Last but not least, people do a sunrise hike to Mount Batur , which is honestly one of the best things to do in Bali, it’s amazing!

Top things to do in Kintamani

  • Sunrise hike at Mount Batur. We highly recommend this trekking experience on Klook as they give you a delicious breakfast at the top of the mountain!
  • Relax in the hot springs near Mount Batur. Again, book this tour via Klook and you can enjoy the hot spring right after your hike.

14. Jatiluwih

Jatiluwih Rice terraces on Bali during sunrise, Indonesia

Jatiluwih is one of the places in Bali that’s up and coming.

As more and more people flock to the rice terraces of Ubud, others are seeking some solace in new ones. Well, Jatiluwih has that for you.

With some of the most stunning rice terrace landscapes in Bali, Jatiluwih itself is a village in the Tabanan Regency.

Perhaps the most famous attraction here is the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, which is a 600-hectare paradise of picturesque rice fields . It’s actually a UNESCO heritage site.

These terraces are nestled about 850 meters above sea level , making it a cool and refreshing area. Perfect for a break from the beaches!

Between February and April is the best time to visit as this is when the rice plants are in their most vivid green colors .

This is also a great place to see the traditional Subak irrigation system in practice, which has been used by local farmers for many centuries.

Top Things To Do in Jatiluwih

  • Check out the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces. Try this full-day tour from Klook that also includes Tanah Lot and Ulun Danu Beratan temples.

The village of Munduk is nestled in the Buleleng Regency of Bali.

It’s best known for its lush green landscapes, many plantations, hidden waterfalls, and gorgeous valleys .

Munduk is one of my favourite places to visit in Bali if you’re looking for a cooler climate.

Bali can get scorching hot, but if you head to Munduk, it’s a little colder, and in the evenings, you may even find you need a jacket!

The plantations in Munduk are home to a variety of crops, from cloves and coffee to vanilla, chocolate, and second crops.

For one of the most iconic photo spots in Bali, you won’t want to miss the Handara Gate. It’s unbelievably picturesque with its striking carvings, and it’s actually an entryway to a golf course!

Top things to do in Munduk:

  • Visit The Munduk Coffee Plantation (famous for its beautiful infinity pool with views!)
  • Visit Munduk Waterfall. Check out this awesome Viatour waterfall tour that takes to you some of the best and most beautiful waterfalls in Bali.

16. Nusa Penida

visit bali reddit

Again, when I first visited Bali years ago, trips to the nearby Nusa islands weren’t really a thing.

But in recent years tourism there has soared, which has thankfully resulted in them fixing the roads (they used to be so small and beyond dangerous!).

Now, you should know that the Nusa islands are comprised of three major islands : Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan, as well as 12 even smaller islands.

There’s no need to visit all three, and people usually stay in one island for a few nights, before taking day trips to the other islands.

Nusa Penida is the largest of them all and has the most options in terms of things to do.

You get a short boat ride from Bali (usually Sanur port) and you can spend the day or even a couple of days on Nusa Penida.

There’s so much to see and do on these beautiful islands and it’s totally different from Bali!

Top things to do in Nusa Penida:

  • Visit all of Penida’s iconic beaches: T-rex beach, Broken Beach, and more
  • Swim with Manta rays and go to the Manta Ray viewpoint for amazing views. We recommend this one-day snorkelling tour around Nusa Penida . You’ll be visiting Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, Manta Bay, and more.
  • Check out the hidden waterfalls with epic views
Ps, you can do an Instagram tour of Penida in a day that will take you to ALL the best spots! Book it here.

Best places to stay on Nusa Penida:

  • Budget: Dayuh House (We stayed here- was a brilliant location!)
  • Mid-Range: Semabu Hills Hotel Nusa Penida ‍
  • Luxury: Road beach sun sun

17. Nusa Lembongan

visit bali reddit

Another one of the Nusa islands is Lembongan, and it’s even closer from Bali by boat.

Lembongan is the perfect place if you want to do snorkelling on beautiful blue, clear waters (The type of waters that Bali doesn’t really have!)

Nusa Lembongan is up and coming too, and since it’s smaller than Nusa Penida, it’s very popular to do a day trip to this island .

It’s approximately only 8 square kilometres in area and has a population of around 5,000.

But the best thing is that there’s a suspension bridge linking Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan , and it’s super easy to cross by foot or motorbike, so that you can tackle both islands at once.

Top things to do in Nusa Lembongan:

  • Go snorkelling amongst beautiful corals and underwater landmarks [Book your snorkelling adventure here]
  • Go scuba diving with manta rays. This epic diving tour was designed for certified divers, and you can visit 2 or 3 iconic dive spots in the area.
  • Have fun with water sports such as banana boat
  • Cross the suspension beach to Nusa Ceningan. Set aside a few hours to explore the neighbouring island!

Best places to stay on Nusa Lembongan

  • Budget: Taman Sari Villas Lembongan ‍
  • Mid-range: Bukit Ancak Lembongan Villa ‍
  • Luxury: Lembongan Beach Club & Resort

18. Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua Beach

Nusa Dua is located in the south east of Bali, but it's the home of watersports in Bali.

Ps. Don’t get this mixed up as one of the Nusa islands. Nusa Dua is located in South Kuta and very close to the airport area.

It’s only around 20 minutes from Kuta and 15 minutes from Jimbaran.

The beaches are beautifully sandy with blue waters and it’s the cheapest place to get your jet skis and have fun in the water.

Other than being a hotspot for water sports, Nusa Dua is best known for its enclave of five-star resorts and luxury hotels.

In other words, this is the place to go for couples on a honeymoon and those wanting to indulge during their holidays.

There are a line of great restaurants in the area too, although they’re a little pricey, as it’s targeted towards couples and families. But still one of the great places to visit in Bali!

Top things to do in Nusa Dua

  • Try jet skiing and parasailing. We recommend getting a water sport adventure package , so you get to enjoy a bit of everything, including the flyboard, banana boat, and many more.
  • Swim in the blue waters of Nusa Dua
  • Have a romantic dinner on the beach.
  • Stay in a five-star hotel! Indulge in a bit of luxury and spend the day in your resort, exploring facilities like private beach access, the spa, and the gym.

Best places to stay in Nusa Dua:

  • Budget: Ellies hotel ‍
  • Mid-range: Nusa Dua Bay View ‍
  • Luxury: Grand Hyatt Bali

ubud

Ubud is certainly one of the more touristy areas in Bali, and it’s no surprise why, it’s home to some great sights!

As well as many of the most stunning Airbnbs available anywhere on the island.

You may be tempted to skip Ubud because you’re worried it’s going to be overcrowded, but I can say that it’s still worth it. Especially if this is your first time in Bali .

It’s the cultural and artistic heart of the island, and you’ll find many interesting activities to keep you occupied. From fire dance performances, art galleries and museums, to ATV courses, rafting, and more.

Not to mention that it’s home to some iconic attractions, such as: the Monkey Forest, Ubud Art Market, Pura Tirta Empul, Ubud Palace, and Campuhan Ridge Walk.

You can easily spend a few days relaxing here. Ubud is really famous for it’s yoga retreats and natural beauty. Think of the movie “Eat, Pray, Love”.

Top Things To Do In Ubud:

  • Check out the Tegallalang Rice Terrace. Here, you can walk through rice fields, take a photo on the gigantic Bali swing, drink luwak or civet coffee, and more.
  • Visit the Monkey Forest Sanctuary and other landmarks.

  • Budget: Jungut Guest House ‍

20. Canggu

visit bali reddit

Canggu is like the western corner of Bali. All the locals call it the "white city" or something similar, I can’t remember what she told me.

But that's not necessarily a bad thing! It’s basically very well-developed and a hub for the digital nomads .

You can easily find a comfy spot in a cafe or even a co-working space here, so you can get in some work while you’re travelling.

There are lots of amazing cafes and restaurants, selling everything from Asian comfort food and Balinese babi guling to the most modern, elevated western fare . Truly a foodie’s dream!

One restaurant I can recommend is Rice Republic , a good middle ground if you're looking for a local spot with some familiar Asian menus (I'm talking fried rice, chow mein, pad thai, and the like). Not to mention that it's pretty cheap and cater to vegans too.

There are many excellent spas in Canggu , and you’ll find budget ones as well as more high-end options.

Plus, it's home to a few great beaches here for surfing, including the famous Batu Bolong Beach (perfect for beginners) and the nearby Echo Beach.

If you’re into that active lifestyle, it’s easy to find activities to try out — regular gyms, martial arts gyms, bouldering gyms, crossfit gyms, you name it!

Top things to do in Canggu:

  • Take a surfing lesson at Batu Bolong Beach. Check out this awesome class with a local surfing instructor , who can adapt to your experiences whether you’re a first-timer or intermediate surfer.
  • Have a drink at the iconic Old Man’s bar on the Canggu beachfront.
  • Go cafe-hopping and hunt for your favourite coffee and brunch spot. We recommend the famous Crate Cafe, Blacklist Coffee, and The Avocado Factory.
  • Experience the Sunday Market at La Brisa. Every Sunday, local cooks and store owners will set up a pop-up stall at La Brisa beach club. Shop for street food, swimwear, organic skincare, handicraft, and more.

Best places to stay in Canggu

  • Budget: The Wina Guest House 2 ‍
  • Mid-range: Eastin Ashta Resort Canggu ‍
  • Luxury: THE HAVEN SUITES Bali Berawa

21. West Bali National Park

Menjangan peninsula, a national park on the west side of Bali, Indonesia

The West Bali National Park is famous for its menjangan deer .

Yup, no one knows how or why they are there, but it’s been said that they crossed over from nearby Java island. (Which you can see from this area of Bali - epic views).

We never visited, as we kind of ran out of time, but it’s another spot we do want to see when we return (which I have no doubts we will one day!).

Located on the northwestern tip of Bali , it’s basically on the opposite site of the island from the airport. So we do recommend planning at least two days to spend here, so you can make the most of your time.

This national park is a conservation area with forests, mangroves, and savanna.

Other than the menjangan deers, it is home to rare species including the Bali starlings and wild cattle . You might also stumble upon a monkey or two (or three) along the roads here!

Top things to do in West Bali National Park:

  • Go snorkelling around Menjangan Island. This full day boat trip will take you on an epic snorkelling trip above dense coral forests, schools of fish and, if you’re lucky, sea turtles.
  • Enjoy a luxury dinner aboard a phinisi boat at Plataran Menjangan . An intimate dining experience with 3 courses included.
  • Soak in your own private hot spring at Mimpi Resort. Stay at least 1 night here and enjoy all the facilities of the resort!

Best places to stay in West Bali National Park

  • Budget: Hotel Niki
  • Mid-range:‍ Mimpi Resort Menjangan ‍

22. Nusa Ceningan

Nusa Ceningan, Indonesia

So there are 3 areas that aren’t on Bali's main island, but are actually part of Bali and that’s Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

You can only access Nusa Ceningan via a yellow bridge from Nusa Lembongan. Most people choose to stay on either Lembongan or Penida, as they are the bigger islands.

Ceningan is also very small so you can easily explore everything in under half a day.

We didn’t visit as we were on the island for a day trip, but it’s fairly quiet, with beautiful beaches and a few great beach clubs , so worth staying if you’ve got the time.

Top things to do in Nusa Ceningan:

  • Explore this tiny island on foot. You can opt for guided tours, like this full-day tour on Klook that includes both Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan. Again, there's the iconic yellow bridge that connects these islands together.
  • Visit the Blue Lagoon and try cliff jumping. This is not for the faint of heart! You can jump of cliffs from heights of 4m, 6m, 8m, and 13m. Or, simply enjoy the crystal-clear, turquoise waters of the lagoon.
  • Relax at the Secret Beach. Pristine white sands, clear waters, and a relatively quiet spot. This is truly THE place for chilling - not to mention the breathtaking views.

Best places to stay in Nusa Ceningan

  • Budget: Island Cove Resort
  • Mid-range: Nusa Veranda Sunset Villas & Restaurant
  • Luxury: Ceningan Beachside Villas

23. Kedungu

Pantai Kedungu

Only a 30-minute drive away from the heart of Canggu, Kedungu is a budding neighbourhood that is becoming more popular, especially among surfers.

While many long-termers are renting villas in the area, it is still relatively untouched by the more mainstream tourists.

It’s a small fishing village very close to the famous Tanah Lot temple and still has plenty of unexplored places.

We recommend staying in Kedungu if you want to be close to Canggu while still enjoying a predominantly quiet atmosphere with few crowds .

Ride around your bike and get off the beaten path. The area is also nice for jogging and just breathing in fresh coastal air.

Top things to do in Kedungu:

  • Surf at Kedungu Beach. There are two main surf breaks at Kedungu Beach, one ideal for beginners and the other fitting for more advanced surfers.
  • Selfie at The Beach Love photo spot. There are many warungs here with unbelievably cheap prices for bottled drinks, whole coconuts, and snacks.
  • See the Holy Snake at Tanah Lot. Enter the temple complex and spend 2-3 hours walking around. There are many photo opportunities and a lot of interesting history to read about.

Best places to stay in Kedungu

  • Budget: Swell Hotel
  • Mid-range:‍ Ocean Villa - Joshua District
  • Luxury: Nirjhara

24. Karangasem

Tirta Gangga Water Garden

Karangasem is a regency in Bali where a few popular towns are located, including Amlapura which we’ve talked about earlier.

It’s of course home to some famous landmarks such as Balai Gili Water Palace, Tirta Gangga Water Palace, Besakih Great Temple, Lempuyang Temple, and more.

But there are also plenty of hidden gems that aren’t yet overrun by tourists!

One spot we’d recommend is Bias Tugel Beach, which is relatively untouched and yet boasts an incredible view.

If you love museums, Samsara Living Museum should be on your list. This living museum is a warm, open space where you can explore Hindu beliefs, take a cooking or arak making class, make offerings, or learn Balinese dance, among others.

On the west coasts, you can also go snorkelling and witness the underwater Japanese Ship Wreck Point, remnants of a Japanese patrol ship that was sunk during WWII.

Top things to do in Karangasem:

  • Visit Balai Gili water palace and step back in time to the Dutch East Indies era. You can book this one-day tour and also visit Candidasa Village afterward.
  • See the Tirta Gangga Water Palace. It’s a picturesque palace with bathing pools, ponds, stepping stones, and fountains. Take a private Bali Instagram Tour to snap the most Insta-worthy photos in the area.
  • Enjoy the tranquil Bias Tugel Beach. This small bay includes a 130-meter coastline of white sand and crystal blue waters. It’s usually very peaceful and quiet here, making it perfect for some relaxation.
  • Snorkel at the Japanese Ship Wreck Point. We recommend this snorkelling trip , which will take you to various spots from Amed Beach to Lipah Bay.

Best places to stay in Karangasem

  • Budget: LinkeesHome Bungaya
  • Mid-range:‍ Bali Cliff Glamping
  • Luxury: Lempuyang Boutique Hotel

25. Denpasar

Denpasar Bali

Denpasar is the capital city of Bali, and it probably sounds very familiar because it also happens to be the IATA code of the international airport (DPS).

However, a lot of people overlook Denpasar as a place to visit, even though it can be so worth it for the affordable food and unique city atmosphere.

It’s one of the few places in Bali that are still mostly filled by locals , therefore a perfect place if you want to experience where and how the young people in Bali live!

From Denpasar, you can also visit the nearby Serangan Island, famous for its temples and as the home to many green turtles.

Stop by the Turtle Conservation And Education Center, which was built to eradicate illegal turtle trading . It nurses injured turtles, collects nests from beaches, and buys turtle eggs from locals, thus preventing them from being eaten.

If you love fishing and adventures like that, this is a great place to try spearfishing!

In terms of cultural attractions, Denpasar brims with them!

The Bajra Sandhi Monument is found in front of the Balinese governor's office, which houses a diorama gallery that showcases local history from as far back as 3,000 BC.

There’s also the oldest museum in Bali: Bali Provincial Public Museum. Here, you can find everything from Dutch paintings and artefacts to weapons from Bali’s bronze age, musical instruments, and statues.

Top things to do in Denpasar:

  • Visit the Turtle Conservation And Education Center. It’s a conservatory for green turtles which includes breeding hatchlings and releasing them, nursing injured animals, and preventing illegal trade.
  • Explore the many temples on Serangan Island. From the famous Sakenan Temple to lesser-known ones like Beji Tirtha Harum Temple.
  • Try spearfishing and catch your own dinner. Check out this awesome spearfishing tour at one of Bali’s most famous locations for spearfishing. You can even cook the fish you caught for dinner.

Best places to stay in Denpasar

  • Budget: Quest Hotel San Denpasar
  • Mid-range: Sri Phala Resort & Villa ‍
  • Luxury: The Trans Resort Bali

So there you go, 25 awesome places to visit in Bali!

None of these places should be missed and it’s super easy to get around Bali, so you’ll have no trouble finding them. Actually, you can read my guide on getting around Bali for some inspiration!.

I hope you’ve found this post useful and hopefully it’s inspired you to visit some lesser known areas of Bali too.

If you want to venture a little further afield from Bali, then you can take a tour to the EPIC Mount Bromo on the island of Java and the equally epic Mount Ijen (Which can be seen from Bali on a clear day).

This tour takes you on a 3-day adventure of these two spots and is a perfect alternative if you don't want to organize a trip to Java island yourself.

  • Is Bali safe?

Yes! During our stay in Bali, we felt secure despite the chaos. If you plan on riding a scooter, it’s best to have experience and a bit of craziness to navigate the traffic. Bali is generally considered a safe destination, but taking precautions to ensure your safety is important.

Theft and scams can occur, so keep your valuables secure and be wary of strangers. We’ve heard about scams at ATMs and stolen cards, but fortunately, we have been fine during our time in Bali. Bali is located in an active seismic zone, and we experienced a couple of earthquakes during our stay. As a precaution, knowing safety guidelines in these situations is essential.

When planning a trip to Bali , it’s important to consider the dry and wet season. Bali’s dry season runs from April to October and boasts good weather with minimal rainfall but high temperatures. However, this also means it’s peak season, and popular areas like Canggu, Kuta, and Seminyak are crowded, making it difficult to navigate on a scooter.

On the other hand, Bali’s wet season runs from November to March, and though it may still be a great time to visit, you should be prepared for rainy weather. The rain can come sporadically or last for days, potentially causing disruptions to your plans. However, visiting during the wet season means the island is lush and green, and you may be able to find better deals on accommodations and activities.

Bali is a popular destination in South East Asia and can be easily accessed from various locations through direct flights or layovers. However, Bali Airport (Ngurah Rai International) is located far away from central hubs and accommodations.

For travellers traversing Asia , Singapore’s Changi Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia are the best airports to fly into Bali.

Australians can fly directly into Bali from Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth . Europeans can also access Bali through direct flights from London and Amsterdam . However, if you’re travelling from the United States, the only direct flights available are from Los Angeles and San Francisco.

When you travel, unexpected situations like medical emergencies or trip cancellations can occur, even when visiting a beautiful and charming island like Bali. That’s why it is important to have travel insurance!

Blue Lagoon in Nusa Lembongan - Is Bali worth visiting? Incredible reasons why visit Bali

Culture and Traditions

Locals are friendly and welcoming, cheap accommodations, explore bali’s best waterfalls, the perfect hub for digital nomads, diverse landscape, affordable food, learn how to cook balinese food, great day trip opportunity, incredible nightlife, relax, practice yoga and meditation, surf on the best waves of south east asia.

During our trip to Bali , we had the opportunity to witness the Nyepi celebration , which is a significant event in the Hindu New Year . Bali has a rich cultural heritage, and we learned a lot about the Balinese people and their way of life.

The temples are breathtaking and strategically located on high cliffs overlooking the sea. Traditional Balinese ceremonies can last an entire day , and it’s an experience that you should witness if you’re planning a trip to Bali .

While on the island of Nusa Lembongan , we witnessed a week-long wedding celebration. Every morning, the locals celebrate and offer thanks to their gods for a new day. Even staying at a local guest house, we had the chance to experience their daily offerings and even make colourful little baskets with them for the Nyepi.

Bali has so much to offer, whether you’re interested in the island’s spiritual traditions, art and music scene, or delicious cuisine. Bali is worth visiting for its rich culture and traditions.

Talah Not temple in Bali - Pros and cons of visiting Bali

Balinese people are known for their friendly and hospitable nature, always eager to share their rich culture and traditions. The best time to visit Bali is during one of their many cultural festivals, where you can immerse yourself in the festivities. In fact, we visited Bali during their New Year celebration, called Nyepi.

It was an incredible experience that allowed us to witness their beliefs and customs firsthand. The Balinese people take pride in their beautiful island and are always happy to suggest activities and sights to visitors. With such welcoming locals, it’s no surprise that Bali is considered one of the most inviting and rewarding travel destinations.

Best sunset spots in Bali - Potato Head sunset

During our trip to Bali , we stayed at various places ranging from simple guest houses to high-end resorts and hotels. Even at the basic level, we were well taken care of by the owners, who made sure we had an authentic Balinese experience.

While the famous areas of Canggu, Seminyak, and Kuta have recently seen a surge in prices, a Bali retreat can still be affordable. The cost of a guest house is less than $20 per night , making it accessible to diverse budgets. Exploring the island and going off the beaten path, you can find even better deals with a wide range of accommodations and styles available. Homestays and guesthouses are the cheaper options, and they often come with a pool and lovely gardens to relax in.

By choosing budget-friendly accommodation and staying in a local guest house, you can spend more time immersing yourself in the island’s culture and natural beauty. Bali’s affordable accommodations are just one of the many reasons why it is a destination worth considering for your next adventure.

Leke Leke waterfall Bali, Toti admiring the stunning waterfall in Bali

Bali boasts an awe-inspiring natural beauty, with stunning waterfalls that should not be missed when visiting the island. In fact, Bali’s waterfalls are one of the top reasons why Bali is worth visiting.

Some of the island’s most breathtaking waterfalls are Sekumpul Waterfall, Gitgit Waterfall, Kanto Lampo Waterfall and Tegenungan Waterfall. These wonders provide the perfect opportunity to connect with nature and experience Bali’s unique atmosphere.

The cool and refreshing waters are ideal for swimming, providing a relaxing escape from the heat. You can rent a scooter and plan your waterfall hopping, or you can book a tour with a guide here.

Bali is an excellent destination for digital nomads seeking a productive atmosphere and a thriving community. We had the most productive month while in Bali and enjoyed our adventures with friends in between.

Bali has become increasingly popular for digital nomads due to its low costs, reliable internet, and vibrant culture. You can easily achieve an affordable lifestyle filled with exciting activities and productivity. We spent our days in various co-working spaces and cafes, meeting other digital nomads and focusing on our day-to-day tasks.

Try this routine. Start your day early and have a healthy breakfast at Crate Cafe. If you’re a fitness enthusiast, hit the gym; otherwise, learn to surf. After that, take a shower and work for at least 4 to 6 hours with complete focus.

After work, it’s time to enjoy the sunset and catch up with your friends. Head over to Batu Bolong, sit on the beach, sip a fresh coconut, and enjoy the most amazing moment of your day! This is what we call life, and it’s possible in Bali.

Bimba overlooking the hidden beach in Uluwatu

Bali boasts a diverse and breathtaking landscape, from white sandy beaches and turquoise waters to lush jungles and ricefield terraces. Bali’s west coast offers a different experience than the calm east coast, and places like Lovina cannot be compared to Canggu and Seminyak .

In fact, these areas are super crowded, and only the surrounding areas around Canggu and Seminyak gained popularity. Instead, if you’re looking for a unique experience, rent a scooter and discover unknown places, you will see so many incredible landscapes, and you will fall in love with this island even more.

When it comes to tasty and budget-friendly food, Bali is a top destination. You can enjoy a variety of local and international cuisines at different price points. You can find traditional Balinese dishes in local warungs like nasi goreng and satay. Both tourists and locals frequent these small restaurants which offer an inexpensive way to enjoy lunch and dinner.

If you’re in the Canggu area, be sure to check out “ Warung Sika “, which is one of our top picks. There are also plenty of vegan and vegetarian restaurants nearby. While Seminyak, Kuta, Ubud , and Canggu are popular destinations, keep in mind that some Westernized options can be pricey. If you are a food lover, this is one of the main reasons why is Bali worth visiting!

Bali Cooking Class, Toti and Kieran enjoying Bali cuisine

During our first retreat in Bali, we chose to stay in Ubud instead of the crowded coast. We were excited to explore the area and understand why everyone is in love with Ubud. For sure, it’s the perfect place for a yoga retreat, but it has a lot to offer.

During our stay in Ubud, we had the privilege of learning how to prepare some of the most popular local dishes, which made it easier to recognize them when we ate out. Food is our favourite part of Bali, and the cuisine is renowned for its unique flavours and spices. Taking a Balinese cooking class is a great way to get immersed in the local culture.

These classes offer an opportunity to learn how to prepare dishes like Nasi Goreng, Satay, and Lawar while discovering the secrets behind their unique flavours. There are various cooking classes available in Bali, ranging from traditional village-style experiences to modern, luxury cooking schools.

These classes offer a great chance to learn about Balinese culture and history. Learning how to cook Balinese food is one of the top reasons to visit Bali. If you’re in Ubud, we highly recommend checking out the Bali cooking class we attended in the jungle.

Nusa Penida blue lagoon - An incredible hidden gem as a day trip from Bali

Upon arriving in Bali, we were excited about the many experiences that awaited us. However, the island exceeded our expectations, offering so much more than just popular Instagram spots . In addition to the famous locations of Ubud , Canggu, and Uluwatu, Bali is an expansive island with picture-perfect rice paddies, mountains, lakes, and waterfalls that will leave you in awe.

For a nearby adventure, we recommend taking a short boat ride from Sanur to the Penida Islands. While we didn’t find Bali’s beaches to be particularly appealing, we fell in love with Nusa Lembongan and extended our stay to enjoy the paradise a little longer before heading to Vietnam. With so much to explore on the island and its surroundings, Bali is definitely worth visiting and offers enough experiences to fill an entire month.

We’ve been having a blast in Bali since day one! One of the reasons is that some of our closest friends were there, and another is that we’ve met some amazing people – from fellow digital nomads and travelers. Bali’s nightlife scene is thriving , with bars, clubs, and restaurants catering to everyone’s tastes.

It’s no surprise that Bali is a top destination for digital nomads. During the day, you can work in superb facilities, and at night, there’s always something going on. Even if you visit Bali just for the nightlife, it’s worth it! The night scene is wild, and we learned that the hard way on our first weekend here.

The routine for locals (digital nomads living in Bali) is straightforward: enjoy a nice dinner, then head straight to the Mart outside XBar , which opens at 7.30 PM every day. After a few Joshots (or Josh Shots), you can walk down to Old Man , an outdoor disco club near Batu Bolong beach.

If you have good stamina, you can continue the fun at SandBar, but we recommend leaving your scooter and getting a grab. The shortcuts and narrow roads in Bali can be dangerous – make sure to check the latest incident in the Canggu shortcut. Thanks to its incredible nightlife, Bali is worth visiting!

If you’re planning a trip to Bali for a relaxing vacation, you’ll find plenty of ways to unwind your body and mind. Book a Balinese massage , and take part in yoga, meditation, and relaxation classes that offer a serene and spiritual atmosphere.

Ubud, the spiritual capital of Bali and a popular hippie hub, is the perfect place to find these classes, but you can also find them all over the island, even if you’re staying in Canggu, Seminyak, or Kuta.

Besides yoga, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery by sipping a drink by the rice paddies, hiking through lush forests, or discovering hidden waterfalls. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced yogi, Bali’s peaceful atmosphere and inspiring scenery make it an ideal destination to recharge and unwind.

Surfing in Uluwatu beach

Have you heard about Bali being a surfer’s paradise ? This Indonesian island offers some of the best waves in Southeast Asia. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert surfer, Bali is the perfect place to hit the waves. The island has popular surf spots that attract Australians and Americans. If you’re interested in trying it out, check out Kuta Beach, Uluwatu, and Canggu.

We found Uluwatu to be challenging for beginners, but with a few lessons in Canggu, you might be ready to ride the waves. One of the things that make surfing in Bali so appealing is that it’s affordable, and people from all over the world have come to ride its waves. Bali’s surf culture is lively and vibrant , and you can even organize your stay in Bali around surf schools and surf camps. Surfing in Bali is an unforgettable experience and one of the top reasons why Bali is worth a visit.

Black Lava tour in Bali - Toti and Ale sitting on top of the jeep

Bali is overcrowded

Bali is too hyped.

  • Tourists just stay in popular hotspots

You pay for every attraction

  • Bali has just a few lovely beaches
  • Pollution and environmental concerns
  • Heavy traffic congestions

Limited infrastructure

Sporadic tourist scams.

I have a vivid memory of my first day in Canggu. The sheer number of scooters zipping through the shortcut that connects the Canggu area with Seminyak was both shocking and overwhelming. Bali’s immense popularity, unfortunately, comes with a downside: overcrowding.

Tourists flock to Bali during peak season, leading to difficulties in finding a quiet spot to unwind. This is a common effect of trendy locations. It’s not just the traffic and crowds that can affect your experience but also the attractions and landmarks themselves.

During busy periods, you may have to endure long queues to take the perfect shot at places like Nusa Penida , waterfalls, and rice fields. Even during Bali’s rainy and wet seasons, we found the island to be still overcrowded.

La Brisa Market in Bali on sunday in Canggu - Is Bali worth visiting

This is our personal opinion about Bali, which you might disagree with. We recently spent two months on the Indonesian island , and we feel that it has been overhyped. Perhaps it’s due to the digital nomad lifestyle or the influencers, but Bali has become too crowded, and staying for an extended period may not be worth it.

However, Bali is still a great place for vacations. You can experience some of the best things in ten days. If your main goal is to enjoy the beaches, Thailand might be a better option. But if you’re looking for a life-work balance, Bali might be the place for you. We loved the Balinese vibes and believe that it’s an experience every digital nomad should have.

But here’s the thing: Bali is perfect for experiencing Balinese culture and stepping out of the comfort zones of areas like Canggu, Seminyak, and Kuta. That’s what should attract you to Bali, not the standard Instagram photos that hide the truth that Bali, like many other places, isn’t perfect.

Perfect Bali Insatgram spot from cretya Sunset

Bali is not just Canggu, Seminiyak and Kuta

In addition to the popular attractions in Bali, there is an entire island waiting to be discovered. After spending a month between Canggu and Seminyak, we decided to explore the heart of the island. We visited Siedeman and Monduk , where we met wonderful people, learned about Balinese culture , and discovered projects that promote sustainable tourism involving both locals and tourists.

Even if you prefer traditional travel and are hesitant to step out of your comfort zone, you might still find it enjoyable to explore Uluwatu or Ubud . However, if you’re looking for island vibes with picturesque beaches and a relaxed lifestyle, we highly recommend visiting Nusa Lembongan .

Gembleng waterfall - Best instagram spots in Bali

When visiting Bali and exploring both popular and off-the-beaten-path attractions, be prepared to pay entrance fees ranging from 20K to 50K. Even the famous gate, often seen in photos, is actually the entrance to a golf club and hotel and requires a 50K entrance fee just to queue for a photo.

For example, the Lake-Lake waterfall requires a 20K entrance fee and an additional 5K fee for a scooter. Although these fees may seem unreasonable for natural beauty, some villages even charge entrance fees for tourists to participate in local activities.

While we understand the reasoning behind these fees, we also recognize that Bali has suffered from over-tourism in recent years, and some places have been ruined as a result. You can check out our reel here and see how much we spent in 2 months in Bali. However, check our experience at Gembleng waterfall , as it was the only attraction free in Bali.

Uluwatu beach, reasons why visit Bali

Don’t go to Bali for the beaches

During our trip to Bali, we found that the beaches were not as nice as we expected. Despite the endless stretch of sandy beaches running for kilometres on the west coast, which passes by Canggu, Seminyak, and Kuta, we did not come across any Instagram-worthy beaches . However, we did find a lovely beach in Canggu that was perfect for watching the sunset. But it was different from what we expected from a tropical island.

We discovered better beaches in Nusa Lembongan . We stayed at a fantastic hotel, which was only a five-minute walk from Mushroom Beach. The atmosphere was laid back, and the vibes were rough, but it had everything we needed to relax and have a fantastic time on holiday.

Other beaches, especially the ones that are popular on Instagram, were fantastic. We have never seen water that colour anywhere else. However, getting to the beaches of Nusa Penida , Diamond Beach , and Kelingking Beach requires a lot of physical strength to go up and down the stairs carved into the cliffs.

Pollution and Environmental Concerns

While Bali is a popular tourist destination, it is facing serious environmental issues such as pollution and waste management. The amount of waste generated has increased significantly due to the influx of tourists.

This is visible not only on the beaches but also in popular spots around the island. The accumulation of litter can damage the fragile ecosystems that surround Bali. Pollution is a major concern for those who drive during peak hours, as they are exposed to exhaust fumes.

Heavy Traffic congestion

We travelled thousands of kilometres throughout Bali, not only visiting famous tourist spots but also exploring more remote areas. However, Bali’s roads are often congested, especially in popular tourist areas like Kuta and Seminyak.

The traffic can be a challenge for both tourists and digital nomads, as it leads to long travel times and frequent traffic jams. While Bali may seem small in size, its hilly terrain and road conditions can make travel times much longer than expected.

Although Bali is a popular tourist destination, it still has limited infrastructure in certain areas. This can result in power outages, limited internet access, and other inconveniences.

It is crucial to prepare for these potential issues and plan accordingly. For instance, even while working in a well-known co-working space in Canggu , we experienced a power outage that lasted for a few hours, causing us to finish work later than expected.

When travelling to Bali, it’s important to be aware of scams aimed at tourists. These can include overpriced tours, fake products, and fraudulent money exchanges. To avoid falling victim to these scams, it’s recommended that you do your research and book tours and transactions in advance.

One example of this is buying tickets online, as we once experienced. We had checked the ticket prices online before going to Nusa Penida , but when we arrived at the harbour, we were overcharged by almost double the price.

Luckily, we had screenshots of the previous day’s ticket prices and were able to negotiate the price down to just 10K rupees more than the actual price. To avoid situations like this, it’s recommended to buy tickets online in advance and check sites like 12Go Asia.

Twin Lakes instagram spots in Bali

If you’re wondering if Bali is worth visiting , there are more advantages than disadvantages. However, the answer to whether it’s worth it or not depends on what you’re looking for in a travel destination. From a Digital Nomad perspective, Bali may not be our favourite, but it’s still worth a visit for travellers. The island boasts breathtaking landscapes, some of the best we’ve seen on our SEA Trip. It also offers rich cultural attractions, delicious food, and friendly locals.

Despite all its good qualities, Bali has its downsides, such as overcrowding, pollution, environmental concerns, traffic congestion, tourist scams, and limited infrastructure. The infrastructure in remote areas is particularly challenging, with badly maintained roads. If you’re willing to deal with these challenges, then Bali can be an amazing place to visit. However, if you prefer a quieter and less-travelled destination, you may want to explore other options.

What’s the best time of year to visit Bali?

The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season , which runs from April to September. This is also peak tourist season, so expect many tourists and higher prices. We visited Bali from February through April, and it was an amazing shoulder season, with affordable prices and pleasant weather.

Do I need a visa to visit Bali?

Yes . Finally, Indonesia has implemented a new e-visa model that helps you request your entry and receive it quickly in a few minutes. Consider also that with an e-visa, you can extend your stay on the island by just applying and paying online, without queuing at the immigration office or paying an agent. Check this website and apply for your visa! Overstaying in Bali over your visa is costly. Every day that you overstay is one million rupees, about £50 ($60, €60).

What are some must-see attractions in Bali?

Some of Bali’s must-see attractions include the Uluwatu Temple , the Tirta Empul Water Temple , the Ubud Monkey Forest , and the rice terraces in Tegalalang .

Is Bali safe for tourists?

Yes , Bali is safe. We didn’t have any problems while in Bali for two months. The island is generally safe for tourists. However, like many other places, be cautious and use common sense. We found the only concern in driving in Bali. If you are not an expert driver, please hire a local to take you to places or book a taxi when needed.

What’s the best way to get around Bali?

The best way to get around Bali is by car or moped. However, be prepared for traffic congestion and limited parking in some areas. We suggest taking a scooter, as it is easy to navigate through narrow roads. Driving a car might take longer to reach places because of traffic, and it also needs some skills. If you are not confident with either driving a car or a scooter, think about hiring a driver for your experience, or book a grab to take you to places. It’s cheaper.
