Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How to get to South Dakota

The best way to get to South Dakota depends on where you're traveling from in the United States, with flying, driving, and catching public transport among the easiest and most time-efficient options.

If you're traveling from a nearby state, self-driving might be the way to go as you have more flexibility over the journey, and the total travel time is unlikely to be more than a few hours.

Flying will be the quickest option if you're traveling from a coast or somewhere equally as far. There are five primary airports in South Dakota, making arriving at your desired destination within the state easy.

Getting around South Dakota

South Dakota is a naturally beautiful state with sweeping grassy plains and dramatic landscapes full of rocky mountains so in order to make the most out of its spectacular scenery, self-driving is one of the best ways to get from place to place.

There are two interstate highways that run through the state, however, alternate routes are also encouraged to explore South Dakota further.

You can easily fly around the state with airports in the major cities of Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Pierre, Aberdeen, and Watertown.

South Dakota also has an impressive public transport system making it easy to get around the state if you're on a budget. 

When is the best time to visit South Dakota?

South Dakota can be enjoyed all year round but the peak time to visit this breathtaking state is during the months of May through to September.

During this time the weather is reasonably warm without being uncomfortably hot. Average temperatures sit at around 73°F making it the perfect weather to spend the majority of your time exploring South Dakota's incredible landscapes.

Situated in Lead, 10 km from Adams Museum, Whitetail Creek Resort features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and a terrace. With a bar, the property also features barbecue facilities. Featuring free WiFi throughout the property, the non-smoking resort has a sauna. Very comfortable kitchen, great layout and had everything I needed. The surrounding area was so beautiful- you are right by a creek. The sauna was very nice and modern!

The rooms include a patio with views of the garden. We had a great time. We had no idea there was so much to see right there. So close to Mt. Rushmore. The room was perfect for the 4 of us and the staff was incredible. So friendly and helpful. We will definitely be going back.

We really enjoyed our stay at Whitetail creek resort. The deluxe cabin was great. We loved the sound of the creek right outside of the door, and the whole experience was very relaxing. We were traveling by motorcycle, and our next leg was up through Spearfish Canyon. This was just a short ride from the resort to Cheyene Crossings (great breakfast) which is at the south end of the Spearfish Canyon ride.

The resort is just a little out of downtown Deadwood so its quiet. We were there for 4 days in a suite. The suite was excellent for a couple. The staff was professional and friendly. The gaming hall is not huge but has a good mix of old and new games. Room was clean. Bed was comfortable. Big bathroom.

Staff was friendly. Bar/restaurant area was great. Good food, excellent service. Plenty of parking for our truck n bike trailer. The king bed was most comfortable bed I've ever slept in . Close to downtown, trolley pickup outside front door of resort. Recommend this resort to everyone. We will return.

Booking a package for your Deadwood vacation is based on the lodging price of an economy property and the activities listed in the package. A package usually requires a two (2) or more nights’ stay in the Deadwood area.

First select your dates, then select your lodging, and then add your activities. We don’t require that you select every activity listed in the package, and you can add activities not listed in the package. Activities are booked separately as you build your package.

Most of our activity prices are discounted, and by building a package, it makes it easy to plan your stay in the Black Hills. Your lodging is discounted. Changes to the package (more nights, upgraded room, more activities, extra person or older children) will automatically adjust the price.
