Tamborine Mountain: Things to do

An image of a canopy of trees in a rainforest, with sunlight peeking through the branches.

Located on Brisbane's doorstep, it may only be an hour’s drive, but Tamborine Mountain feels like you’re a world away. The beautiful and picturesque area in the Scenic Rim has a rich history, is home to stunning national parks and rainforests, and has its fair share of food and wine experiences. Pack a camera, you’ll be needing it.

01. Feel on top of the world

The  Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk  is probably the best – and easiest – way to get your head around just how beautiful Tamborine Mountain is. Wander among the treetops and follow the path that gradually descends to the lower canopy, past rock pools to the cantilever that stands 30 metres above the valley and offers views for miles. The walk takes about an hour, including a stop at the Rainforest Eco Gallery, which explores some of Tamborine Mountain’s local and indigenous history. A must-do on your list of things to do in Tamborine Mountain.

02. Reach for the sky

Start your day by watching the sun rise from above Tamborine Mountain.  Hot Air Balloon Scenic Rim  takes you up into the sky, giving a 360-degree view of the beautiful landscape of the Scenic Rim and out to sea. Once back on ground, stop in at  Canungra Valley Vineyard ’s historic grand homestead for a Champagne breakfast and wine tasting. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere, right?

03. Explore the glow worm caves

Take a trek through the rainforest and go on a unique guided tour through the  Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves . Unlike most wild glow worms, this colony is fully visible during the daytime, so don’t miss your chance to see thousands of them glowing inside the cave all before exploring the rest of  Cedar Creek Winery .

04. Tuck into some local producers

We realise that the food and drink options on Tamborine Mountain are seemingly endless, so follow your nose and eat the best of it at the Tamborine Mountain  Scenic Rim Eat Local Week  events. It’s held annually throughout the Scenic Rim, so keep an eye out for dates. There’s also plenty of local eats available all year round, try  Lemon Gelato Lovers  for an icy treat or let the  Picnic Real Food Bar  pack you a picnic box so you can relax under the trees and soak up the views from across the mountain.

05. Soak up all the caffeine

See where your coffee addiction begins while you wander through over 600 coffee trees in the only coffee plantation on the mountain.  Tamborine Mountain Coffee Plantation  grows, harvests and roasts all of its beans to make fresh and delicious coffee, so stop in at the onsite café to taste it for yourself. And if you’re wanting to take your coffee experience to the next level, head to Curtis Falls Café to enjoy a warm cup amongst the beautiful rainforest or  Splice of Life Café Deli  for a classic coffee and cake.

06. Follow the Gallery Walk

Park the car and wander down Long Road to explore the art, craft, gift and knick-knack stores along the  Gallery Walk . On the eastern side, there’s  Granny Mac’s Fudge Store and Café , whose name speaks for itself. Across the road, there’s chocoholic haven  Chocolates on Gallery Walk  and the nostalgia-inducing  Bygone Days and Vintage Crafts . Once you’re all shopped out, finish with a pint of local beer at  Fortitude Brewing Co .

07. Wander through the botanic gardens

Sprawled over 11 hectares, the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens holds a colourful and diverse range of exotic and native flora. Including a tranquil Japanese garden and a tropical rainforest walk, follow the trail to discover the beautiful species that grow here before finishing the visit with a lakeside picnic.

Tamborine Mountain Distillery Couple Cheers

08. Say cheers with local beverages

What better way to curb wastage than to turn it into alcohol?  Tamborine Mountain Distillery  started more than 20 years ago when a family on the mountain was growing too much fruit. Today the internationally awarded distillery produces liqueur, vodka and schnapps using native flowers and local produce. Our recommendation? The lilly pilly gin or the eucalyptus gum leaf vodka.

Stop in to try a paddle of beers from the purpose-built  Fortitude Brewing Company ’s two labels, Fortitude and Noisy Minor. There are mouth-watering eats to be had at the restaurant and a cheese shop too.

Visit  Cauldron Estate and Distillery , set on an expansive 18-acres with vineyards and picturesque green meadows. Sample their Queensland-inspired gin range, partake in gin-making classes and sip 'n' paint sessions, or simply relax while listening to live tunes.

09. Enjoy a damn fine vino drop

Like wine? You’re going to love Tamborine Mountain.  Witches Falls  ranks in Australia’s top 4.9 per cent of wineries,  Cedar Creek Estate Winery and Vineyard  has a purpose-built glow-worm cave and  Albert River Wines  gives you the chance to try your hand – or feet – at grape-stomping in the barrels.  Mason Wines  also has a stunning winery restaurant and cellar door on the mountain and is worth a stop for a tasting with a side of lunch, and spectacular views. There are even cottages on site if you'd like to stay the night!

10. Hire the designated driver

There’s much wine and beer to be tasted on Tamborine Mountain (see points 8 and 9), so make a day of it and join a tour to discover the best the mountain has to offer.  The Vino Bus  picks you up and drops you off at your front door, taking you around a number of Tamborine Mountain’s wineries and ending with a two-course lunch.  Tash Maree Travel’s wine-tasting tour  is another great option and includes the all-important cheese tasting. Or experience the endless picturesque views your way with  Pineapple Tours , the list of things to see on Mount Tamborine is endless!

11. Crack a 200 million-year-old mystery

Don your best cap, dig out your magnifying glass and head to  Thunderbird Park  to fossick in the world’s largest thunderegg mine. Put on your hard hat, rummage through fresh soil and demolish tyre towers at  Dig IT 's mini excavator park. Whatever your pick - dig deep and see you can find!

12. Conquer your fears with the Treetop Challenge

Scared of heights? How does relying on just a harness across more than 100 challenges in the  Treetop Challenge  at Thunderbird Park sound? Hang from trees, climb the ladders, balance on bridges, navigate through suspended tunnels. Our hearts are racing already.

Spread across 3.6 hectares of unspoiled bushland, there are six courses designed for the different levels of adrenaline junkies (think 0-100 real quick). To be fair, conquering your fears is completely worth it once you have a turn on the zipline, and the Treetop Challenge has 11 in total.

13.  Go chasing waterfalls

Pack a camera, put on your best activewear and grab your walking shoes to explore the waterfalls on Tamborine Mountain. For a guaranteed waterfall, follow the 1.1km track through the mossy forest to  Curtis Falls , or pack a picnic and follow the trail to  Cedar Creek Falls  to peer up at the 15-20m waterfall. If you want to explore more, choose the 3.1km  Witches Falls  Circuit and take the waterfalls in from the viewing platform, which also has some incredible views. If waterfalls really are your thing, it is possible to visit all four in one day.

14. Everything the light touches is ours

Set the alarm for nice and early and catch at least one sunrise while you’re on the mountain. The picks of the vantage points are Eagle Heights Resort, Golf Course Road, Magnetic Drive, Licuala Drive and Guanaba Road. Tamborine Mountain is 550m above sea level, so on a clear morning, views can stretch from Tweed Heads up to Moreton Bay.

Facing inland, the view from the lookout points is no less spectacular. Pack a picnic and eat overlooking the views from Knoll Road, or take a hike and follow the Cameron Falls or Witches Falls trails. In the mornings you can see hot-air balloons floating below you from  Rotary Lookout , and Hang Gliders Lookout is the spot to seek out for photographers - watch hang-gliders launch and picnic at sunset.

Couple hiking at Tamborine Mountain

15. Go on, take a hike

Even if you’re not the most outdoorsy person, there are  hikes on Tamborine Mountain  that even the most cynical hiker will enjoy. The short, easy and extremely popular trails will take you to Curtis Falls, Cedar Creek Falls Lookout, Cedar Creek Falls Rock Pools or the MacDonald Circuit. A little longer, but still doable even for the only moderately fit, are the Witches Chase Track, Witches Falls Circuit, Palm Grove Circuit and the Cameron Falls Circuit.

If you’re feeling particularly up for the challenge, follow the 4.2km Joalah Circuit, which passes through a flying fox colony and past a giant fallen strangler fig tree.

16. Wander through the markets

Tamborine Mountain hosts a number of markets each month  – each is different and worth checking out. Every Sunday, the Local Producers’ Market at The Green Shed offers organic produce as well as other locally made goodies including honey and preserves.

The Country Markets are held on the second Sunday of each month, selling fresh produce, plants, collectables and arts and crafts. Tuck in to a knackwurst with mustard and top it off with poffertjes (Dutch pancakes).

The Tamborine Mountain State School Markets are held on the last Sunday of each month and are worth visiting for the variety of locally made products – from hand-made cookies to hand-crafted soaps.

17. Discover local art

You’ve done the Gallery Walk, now it’s time to walk the galleries. See the outback Australian landscape through the eyes of Arthur Hamblin at the  Arthur Hamblin Art Gallery , or visit the  Mountain Dreams Studio  to view unique creations by Maki Horanai. Wander through  Hilltop on Tamborine  and browse the gallery of contemporary and traditional art from local and other artists, followed by lunch in the restaurant with a side of coastal views.

18. Go antiquing

Have you always wanted to describe yourself as someone who goes antiquing? Here’s your chance. At  Antiques Plus  you will notice a luxury vibe inspired by items from the past. Try your hand at picking a unique item for yourself or a gift for someone special.

19. Put romance first

Escape to Pethers Rainforest Retreat and enjoy a private and secluded retreat designed exclusively for adults. Set amongst five hectares of private and pristine rainforest, you’ll be able to settle into a private treehouse each with a spa for two and five-metre-high glass windows leading to an outdoor balcony. Relax in the tranquil hinterland and watch the sun go down at the luxurious Avocado Sunset B&B . Or enjoy a bit of country charm at the Mountain Manor , one of the oldest manor hotels in South-East Queensland (circa 1882). Think Victorian suites, leather lounges and an open log fire, it’ll feel like you’re a world away from the busy city life.

20. Savour fancy flavours

The restaurant at Pethers Rainforest Retreat  is cosy and intimate. Once you stop drooling over the menu you will be amazed by the intimate setting centred on an open fireplace. The restaurant has a vegetable and herb garden just metres from the kitchen, and the property also features an avocado orchard and four beehives.

21. Fudgin’ delight

Those with a sweet tooth, rejoice – there are two fudge shops on Tamborine Mountain and both are pretty great. Granny Mac ’s has more than 40 varieties and encourages sampling. We like the

22. Get the wind beneath your wings

Have you ever dreamt of soaring like an eagle? Get a bird’s-eye view over the hinterland with  SEQ Hang Gliding , using the purest form of free flight. No cockpit, no engine – just you and nature.

23. Take a day drive

Follow one of two drive routes to ensure that you see the best of Mount Tamborine in one go. The  Tamborine Mountain Drive  and  Tamborine Circuit  are detailed but just remember to stop in at one of the many vantage points and get snap happy along the way.

24.  Pick up goodies  along the side of the road

Keep an eye out as you’re driving around Mount Tamborine. Dotted along the roads, next to mailboxes, are stalls selling fresh produce, plants and other home-made goodies – chances are they taste better than anything you’ll ever buy in a supermarket and they’re a fraction of the price. They’re rarely manned, so drop some money into the honesty box and keep going until you see the next side-of-the-road stall.

25. Find this hidden gem

You don’t need to travel to Lightning Ridge to get your hands on a beautiful Australian opal. Wander through Australian Outback Opals , admire the striking colours of this beautiful gemstone and learn a little more about it.

Couple picnicking at sunset on Tamborine Mountain

26.  Pack a picnic

The waterfalls and hiking trails get us out and about, but we also need to refuel. Pack a picnic  and have lunch overlooking spectacular views from The Knoll, or grab a picnic table after walking back from Cedar Creek Falls. Just remember to leave nothing but footprints so that visitors to the mountain can continue to enjoy the beautiful region.

27. While away the hours at the Scarecrow Festival

Scarecrows line the roads on Mount Tamborine during the annual  Scarecrow Festival . Creativity runs wild with some of the displays – with everything from quite literally scary crows to nativity scenes  a la scarecrows . We dare you to not get  If I Only Had A Brain  stuck in your head.

28. Pamper yourself

Indulge yourself with some much needed R&R.  Getaway Day Spa  will allow you to kick back and relax with a glass of Champagne, while its quality beauty and massage therapists work their magic.

Head to Jasmin Organics and treat yourself to their locally made skincare range. Do their factory and farm tour while you're at it to see how all the products are produced,

Wondering what to do at Mount Tamborine? A highlight of your Tamborine holiday (and one of those great free things to do in Mt Tamborine) will be a visit to Mount Tamborine National Park. Walk through the subtropical rainforest, explore diverse landscapes, stunning waterfalls and creeks, and spot the local wildlife at this breathtaking natural attraction. In terms of things to do at Tamborine Mountain, there are plenty of walking options to suit every ability and fitness level so that everyone can enjoy the ancient rainforest. The Cedar Creek Falls and Cedar Creek Rock Pools are a family favourite and a great place to cool off in hot weather. An easy (grade one) 500 m return walk to the lookout offers a fantastic view of the falls and rock pools. If you’re fitter, you can take another track (this adds 600 m to the return circuit) to the rock pools – this extra section is more challenging with a fairly steep decline down to the pools (don’t forget you have to walk up on the way back!) which makes it a grade three hike.

Ensure you bring water shoes for the rock pools as they can be slippery, and be prepared for the absolutely freezing water! Parking at Cedar Creek Falls can be limited, so consider parking at the back of Thunderbird Park for a flat walk to the falls along their walking track.

Location: Cedar Creek Falls Road, Tamborine Mountain

Hours: Open daily October to March from 6 am to 8 pm | Open daily April to September from 6 am to 6 pm

For those seeking more of a challenge, consider the Witches Falls Section for a longer Mt Tamborine hike. There are two walks to choose from (both rated grade four) and they require a good fitness level, so only add this to your Mt Tamborine to do list if you’re feeling up to it! The first hike is a 3.6 km circuit taking around one hour. Your walk will take you through beautiful banksia trees and into the rainforest with its giant strangler figs and seasonal lagoons, which appear after heavy rainfall.

On this hike, you can take a 200 m detour from the main track to visit the Witches Falls lookout to gain the best views.

For a longer hike, continue on the 2.6 km return circuit of the Witches Chase Track. It takes an extra hour and leads you through a lush eucalypt forest, past towering red cedars, and through a field of boulders.

Location: Manitzky Road, Tamborine Mountain

The MacDonald Section features the MacDonald Rainforest circuit, a serene 1.4 km walk ideal for families with young children. It’s a flat grade 3 path, taking just 35 minutes to complete.

The circuit takes you through lush rainforests and tranquil palm groves, making it a favourite among birdwatchers.

Location: Wongawallan Road, Tamborine Mountain

The Curtis Falls walk is a popular choice for families visiting Mount Tamborine. This beautiful hike takes you into the lush rainforest where you can see giant strangler figs, staghorn ferns, a colony of bats, flowing streams and, finally, the stunning Curtis Falls.

The Curtis Falls walk is a fairly easy (grade three) 1.1 km round trip that takes around 30 minutes to complete. Curtis Falls is the only Mount Tamborine waterfall you can view from the bottom of the falls rather than looking down from a lookout, so it’s well worth a visit.

The waterfall flows year-round, regardless of rainfall, so it’s one of those Mt Tamborine free things to do to add to your list any time of the year.

When you’ve enjoyed your time at the Falls, you can continue to the Lower Creek Circuit, which is an additional 1.4 km (this will take about an hour to complete). To do the full circuit, this walk involves crossing a creek over rocks, which can be challenging, but if you prefer, you can turn back and return on the same track.

Although the Lower Creek Circuit is rated grade four, most of the walk isn’t difficult, and the incredible rainforest scenery makes it well worth it.

There is limited parking at the Curtis Falls entrance but plenty of street parking in the surrounding area. You can also park near the shops on Eagle Heights Road and walk the 400 m track to the falls. The walk from the street is flat and easy.

Location: Dapsang Drive, Tamborine Mountain

If you’re looking for a peaceful experience in nature away from the tourist trails, the Palm Grove Section is a great walk. This area offers two walks (both grade four): the Palm Grove circuit and the Jenyns circuit.

The Palm Grove circuit is a 2.7 km hike that takes around an hour to complete. You’ll see enormous palms, towering gums, hoop pines, and spiky ancient cycads during the walk. The Jenyns circuit adds 2.1 km to the hike and 1.5 hours to the experience, and the reward is seeing the rainforest change from tropical to eucalyptus forest – the trees are incredible!

Location : Access via Palm Grove Avenue or Curtis Road

The Tamborine Mountain Skywalk is one of the best Mt Tamborine tourist attractions. Set in 30 acres of pristine, sub-tropical rainforest, it offers a unique perspective of the lush environment by taking you into the rainforest canopy.

Families will enjoy strolling along the easy and accessible 1.5 km walkway along the rainforest floor and the 300 metres of high-tech steel bridges elevated amongst the trees. The highlight of the Skywalk is the 40-metre cantilever bridge which towers 30 metres above the creek and rainforest below. It’s a magical experience being so high up in the treetops surrounded by wildlife.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the endangered Richmond birdwing butterfly between October and March or the threatened Albert’s lyrebird if you’re visiting during the cooler months.

In addition to the Skywalk, the attraction features the Eco Gallery, which displays information about the rich flora and fauna of the local Australian rainforest and some information about the area’s indigenous history.

To fully experience the Skywalk, it is suggested you allow around 45 minutes for your visit, but you can easily spend longer if you’re enjoying your time in this ancient landscape surrounded by wildlife.

Looking for Tamborine Mountain things to do with kids? Visiting the Tamborine Mountain glow worm caves at the Cedar Creek Estate is a great attraction for all ages. The Mt Tamborine Glow Worm Caves have been created so you can easily spot these tiny glowing creatures in an artificial cave. You join a short guided tour through the rainforest boardwalk and enter their habitat to get up close and personal with these vibrant creatures. Set within the beautiful grounds of Thunderbird Park, you can enjoy hiking or wildlife spotting, or you could spend some time at the Thunderegg Crystal Mine or do the Tree Top adventure courses. When you’re done for the day, you can enjoy dinner in the Rainforest Lounge and Bar or order in-room dining. Cedar Creek Lodges is a convenient location for families and there is so much on offer at Thunderbird Park that you don’t really need to leave the resort. However, when you are ready to explore further afield, you’re only a ten-minute drive from Gallery Walk or five minutes from the Skywalk, so everything is close to hand.

This guide brings together our top things to do in Mt Tamborine, there’s no shortage of good entertainment, fresh air and great food to be found. The relaxed mountain village is located in the Gold Coast hinterland, an easy 50-minute drive from the Gold Coast beaches or an hour from central Brisbane. Heading out here is an ideal day trip or equally good for a few nights away from the city.

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk

Take in the views from the fantastic lookouts, gallery walk and shops, mt tamborine botanic garden, visit the wineries, glowworm grotto, mystery picnic, support local growers and producers at the markets, witches fall’s walking track, curtis falls, take a dip at cedar creek falls, rainforest walk in the macdonald section, where to stay in mt tamborine, our top things to do in mt tamborine.

The Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk provides a new birds-eye perspective from the cantilevered bridge and metal sky bridges that take you right into the upper canopy. The full walk here is a 1.5 km long passing up to 30 metres above the creek and forest floor below.

The skywalk at Mt Tamborine

The skywalk experience is set on 30 acres of private rainforest adjacent to the National Park. Extend your visit at the informative eco-gallery or stop for refreshments at Birdwing cafe, the deck looks directly into the canopy where we watched a white-throated treecreeper run up the trunk of a nearby tree as we drank our coffee before the showy king parrots swooped in to steal their stage.

There is a range of lookouts on Tamborine Mountain, some look into and over the forest while others face out to the ocean.

Sites like the Rotary, Beacon Road and Hang Gliders lookouts are easy to access while others like the ones at Witches Falls and Cameron Falls are a 25-30 minutes walk on the track to the lookout point.

We’ve included several of the best lookouts on the map above and marked them with the binoculars icon, not that you actually need binoculars to take in the view.

The ‘Gallery Walk’ is a section of Long Road between Wongawallen and Eagle Heights Road although the shops, cafes and attractions now extend a little beyond these markers. There is a lot to take in within a fairly small stretch so park the car and take amble up one side and down the other.

Cuckoo clock shop on the Gallery Walk

A few icons on the Gallery Walk include the family-owned German Cuckoo Clock Nest in the distinctive Bavarian-style chalet that has been a mainstay of the area and Granny Macs Fudge which has been making their renowned fudge on the premises for 25 years.

Foodies love to stock up in boutique stores like Funny Honey which is owned and operated by a beekeeper or the Truffle Discovery Centre with an extensive range of truffle and other gourmet products. We often head back to the car with favourites like freshly baked lavender shortbread or rosella jam, all made locally of course and a couple of cheese for the esky from Tamborine Cheese.

The botanic garden in Mt Tamborine is only a short distance beyond the Gallery Walk. The 11-hectare block was developed in 1983 thanks to the foresight of the local garden group, today it is a stunning garden that takes full advantage of its sub-tropical to temperate climate.

Tamborine Botanic Garden

It showcases its winding pathways, an attractive lakeside area, the rainforest section, a Japanese garden and an excellent selection of bromeliads and succulents. In season the camellia and azalea put on a stunning display and there is plenty of colour and interest all year round, the massive sweep of clivias is a personal favourite.

There are plenty of spots to stop and enjoy the garden views or a picnic including a large covered area with tables above the lake that provides an all-weather option. There are toilet facilities and good parking available.

There are several wineries, brewers and distilleries on Mount Tamborine that can be built into your itinerary or can make a great day out on their own.

Witches Falls Winery is a personal favourite located almost adjacent to the walking trailhead and cottage accommodation. They use premium grapes predominantly from Queensland’s Granite Belt and offer wine tasting and artisanal cider tasting. Sit out overlooking the vines and pair your choice with cheese, crackers and preserves available onsite.

Witches Falls Winery

Mason Wines are open Wednesday to Sunday with tastings at the cellar door and restaurant. They will soon add a build your own cheese and charcuterie platter option at the cellar door. Finally, Cedar Creek Estate Winery and Vineyard are also open 7-days, their wine tasting covers, red, white, rose and fortified wines, and they have a restaurant on-site.

Tamborine Mountain Distillery has a tasting room that opens 7-days from 10 am to 5 pm showcasing their artisanal liqueurs and spirits many featuring Australian botanicals. Albert River Wines production exclusively uses Queensland grown grapes, they are open 7-days and offer wine tasting at the cellar door and a restaurant.

Fortitude Brewing Company sits somewhere between craft and mainstream with a range of bold but balanced brews. Sit out in the sunshine, there’s plenty of choice with 15 beers from their range on tap or try a tasting paddle and round out the afternoon with a pizza and live music on weekends.

If you are interested in exploring the wineries and foodie culture on the mountain but prefer not to self-drive you can join a wine tasting tour that includes 4 boutique wineries with comprehensive tastings, a distillery visit and a winery lunch.

Glowworms are all around us in the Tamborine, Lamington and Springbrook National Park but you will rarely see them in the wild. They like to be in a spot that is constantly dark, damp and undisturbed, ideally a cave but we are short of those in this part of Queensland so we have mostly glowworms of the species Arachnocampa Flava which live around waterfalls where the banks and rock stay damp.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tamborine Mnt Glow Worm Tours (@tamborineglowworms)

For most people getting out into the bush to discover a natural glowworm display at night is neither safe nor practical so the Glowworm Grotto is an opportunity to see these glowworms inside a manmade cave during the day.

This is not the same sort of experience as visiting a naturalised colony like the Waitomo Glowworm Caves or Ruakuri Caves but the ecological, educational and environmental objectives are the same. Tourism and deforestation have been devastating for glowworm colonies in Queensland as they have in many other places around the world. The Grotto is a fully eco-certified sanctuary that started with 300 larvae and now has a colony of over 8000.

A different way of exploring the area for foodies is with a mystery picnic. We’ve written about our own experience on the Amazing Co couples picnic and even though we know the area well it was still a great opportunity to discover some new local artisan producers and products and have a chat with some locals.

Amazingco mystery picnic goodies

Your clues are sent to you in the morning directing you to your starting point, you then solve clues and riddles that take you between the various shops, wineries and other venues where you will pick up the treats that fill your picnic basket. There are ideas of other things to do in the area before or after your lunch and they suggest a lunch spot to lay out your picnic spread and enjoy.

Check prices and book a Mystery Picnic

There are many artisans, craft producers and growers on the mountain and you can support them through local stores, farm gate sales and at the markets.

The Tambourine Mountain Country Markets are held on the 2nd Sunday of each month at the Showgrounds from 7.30 am until 1.30 pm with parking available on site for a gold coin donation. The focus of the market is homegrown, homemade and handcrafted.

On the last Sunday of the month, it is the State School Markets from 7 am until 1 pm. There are up to 130 stalls of all kinds and you will find local produce and artisan products among them. The school is on the corner of Long and Curtis Roads.

Walking Tracks of Mt Tamborine

The dramatic landscape around Tamborine Mountain was carved out millions of years ago during the eruption of a huge shield volcano that stretched south from here to Mt Warning in northern New South Wales. Much of the diverse vegetation and habitat for the wildlife of the region is protected today as Tamborine Mountain National Park and forms part of the World Heritage, Gondwana Rainforests of Australia.

The Tamborine National park is made up of 14 sections of land, 6 of which have walking tracks winding through them to explore.

One of the tracks we do most often is the Witches Falls walking track. It’s a circuit so you could do it in either direction but it’s a narrow path on the side of the mountain with steep edges in parts so it’s not ideal for passing others coming the other way so following the recommended clockwise direction makes sense. This way also takes you mostly down the slope and up the steps which is easier on the knees.

Witches Falls track

We have a guide to walking the Witches Falls track with tips and photos to help you plan your visit.

In the village not far from the Gallery Walk is Curtis Falls with an easy walking track, pretty falls and an extended walk that follows the cascades downstream. While the pool does look inviting, especially on a summer’s day, you can’t swim at this one to protect the platypus and glow worm environment. We’ll get to the best swimming hole to cool off after your hike down below.

There is good parking at the top and toilet facilities but no picnic area here, there is a cafe back on the road only a short detour down the track to the left if you need to caffeinate before you start.

Curtis Falls in Tamborine Mountain

The tracks here are great for birding, we’ve regularly seen Noisy Pitta, Log Runners and even Alberts Lyrebird here but while platypus is recorded in the area it’s not a location that we have personally seen them.

From the falls you can return to the car park, which is a 1.1 km round trip or continue on to the Lower Creek Circuit for a 2.5km round trip, this one includes little boulder hopping across the creek. It’s rated a grade 4 difficulty but unless it has been very wet when the creek will be up and the track possibly muddy it’s not difficult.

Cedar Creek Falls is a section of the park and walk that is often forgotten. It’s located slightly further north than most of the attractions in the area but is only 6km from the Gallery Walk in the ‘centre of town’ which is a 10-minute drive on the mountain roads.

What is special about this section of the National Park is that it is the only local swimming hole, other waterfall pools are either inaccessible or swimming is not permitted to protect the fragile ecosystem.

From the car park area on Cedar Creek Falls Road, you can access the picnic facilities and the viewing platform for the Falls. There is a grassy area with picnic tables, free BBQs and toilet facilities.

Follow the sealed path and wooden walkway down to the cascades below Cedar Creek Falls where they form a series of swimming holes in the rock. Three pools are easily accessible from the track and these are the ones that are open for swimming, the are other pools further downstream. The walk down to the gorge is 500 metres and will take 10-15 minutes. The path is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs with assistance.

The Macdonald section is an easy and mostly flat walk along a 1.4km loop track through the rainforest. It starts on Wongawallen Road and is above and behind the Botanic Gardens although the two aren’t connected. This one is a particularly pretty section with all the palms, ferns and strangler figs.

Rainforest walk

This section was particularly recommended for bird watchers and it delivered on that with a surprisingly good list in a short time. There is parking and a picnic table at the start but no toilets, you are very close to town here which has good facilities.

This is not a negative reflection on the walk or track in any way but more a word of warning that this is the only place to date where one of us has had a run-in with a Queensland stinging tree. Luckily it was the lightest of brushes with a young sapling but it is every bit as nasty as they say. Just a word of warning that this plant is common and on an easy stroll like this you can easily miss seeing those young plants that spring up in the extra light at the edge of the path. Don’t let it put you off getting out in nature but do watch out for them.

Most accommodation on the mountain is boutique style or holiday rentals rather than the larger operators.

Songbirds Rainforest Retreat has 6 villas tucked away within 50 acres of rainforest. They are well-appointed and spaced apart for a feeling of seclusion with a balcony to enjoy the landscaped gardens. They are fully self-contained so you can self cater during your stay and have fireplaces for cozy winter evenings. There is a restaurant on-site and breakfast can be added when you book.

If you prefer to book a whole house for your stay there are many options for that such as the Linger a While Chalet right on the Gallery Walk that is suitable for a couple or The Bank House with 4 bedrooms and bathrooms for friends or a larger family.

Another good choice for couples could be the Witches Falls cottages with their easy access to the walking track, lookout and winery. There are 3 well-appointed cottages/suites available, each with a spa bath situated under a glass roof to soak up the night sky. They have a variety of breakfast hampers to choose from and the option to self cater or enjoy the local restaurants for dinner.

Mt Tamborine

Head for the hills and a welcome tree change in the hinterland region of Mount Tamborine. Think winding roads, country drives, bracing hikes, foodie finds, guided day trips and tree top adventures. The place name Tamborine is from the local Yugambeh language. It means wild lime and refers to the finger lime trees that grow wild on the mountain.

There are numerous walks, waterfalls and and lookouts from which to enjoy Mother Nature at her most blindingly brilliant, including the mysteriously-named Witches Falls or charming Cedar Creek. Explore the area by yourself, or join a tour which takes in a number of attractions such as Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk and the Glow Worm Caves.

For a change of pace, enjoy several wineries, a brewery and even a distillery up on the mountain, which is perfectly punctuated with award-winning restaurants, art galleries, sweeping coastal views and that delicious mix of old and new-world charm. Browse the eclectic mix of antique stores, artisan galleries, retail boutiques and cafes on Gallery Walk. Indulge in home-grown produce from local markets and roadside stalls, as well as award-winning cheeses and fabulous fudge, or dine in some seriously swish restaurants. Select from cosy cottages, camping, a hotel or two, including the iconic St Bernard's Hotel, in which to stay the night. But however you explore Mount Tamborine, schedule some quality time to stare. The views across wide skies and rolling valleys down to the distant Pacific Ocean will stop you in your tracks every time.

Things to do at Tamborine Mountain

There is so much to do on Mt Tamborine Qld that I really would recommend that you stay for a few days. The following are ideas of things you can add to your itinerary when you visit.

Tamborine Mountain Gallery Walkway cuckoo clock hanging on a wall.

Cuckoo clocks may be something you associate with Switzerland but I can guarantee that after a visit to Gallery Walk they will also be something you associate with Australia.

The shopping street of Mt Tamborine offers many boutiques and small quaint shops for you to browse and purchase some great gifts for yourself or your friends. And of course, there is Mt Tamborine clock shop! cuckoo clock!

Inside a beautiful Bavarian chalet, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding and choosing the perfect cuckoo clock for your needs. For further information about this wonderful cuckoo clock shop check out their website “The Cuckoo Emporium”

As well as the wonderful Mount Tamborine clock shop there are lots of other great shops, cafes and restaurants to choose from on your stroll along the street.

Tamborine Mountain Gallery Walkway Swiss chalet.

I love the skywalk and I highly recommend a visit (and I am not great with heights but the views are great!) as you get the opportunity to explore the rainforest from above. The walk is 1.5 kms which you can take at your own pace.

There are rainforest trails as well as 300 metres of steel bridges and a 40-metre cantilever bridge which gives great views over the rainforest.

At the start of the walk make sure to check out all the information and photographs in the Rainforest Eco Gallery.

There is a cafe and a shop at the skywalk as well as toilet facilities.

Parking is free in the car park too. The skywalk opens at 9.30 each day and is open every day but on Christmas Day. The last walk is at 4 pm and the skywalk shuts at 5 pm.

TIP – wear flat shoes!

For more information check out the website Rainforest Skywalk

Tamborine Mountain Skywalk.

Glow worms – who can resist the opportunity to see these little guys in action? We certainly couldn’t so had to stop off at the glow worm caves to see them! The purpose-built caves provide thousands of glow worms with the perfect living conditions and you will learn all about their life cycle.

The tours depart every 30 minutes and there are about 20 maximum to a group. To find out more about visiting the caves (prices and opening hours) check out the official website Glow Worm Cave Tamborine Mountain.

There a 7 wineries on Mt Tamborine as well as a brewery and a distillery! Now if you intend to sample some of the excellent local produce I would suggest taking a tour.

Travel in style on a tour of the 13 cellar door outlets and try some of the local wines!

Tamborine Mountain Winery sign.

Get Your Guide also have some excellent tours available. If you are within 10 kms of Surfers Paradise pick up is also included.

My choice of tour includes guided tastings at 4 of Tamborine’s best wineries plus Tamborine Mountain Distillery.

This winery tour also includes a delicious two-course lunch, snacks and bottled water, plus the option to stop at the Cheese Factory.

There are 6 main bushwalking areas to choose from if hiking is your activity of choice (a great way to walk off all that food and drink!) and most are under 3 km so about an hour walk. There are plenty of Mt Tamborine hikes to choose from including:

Where to stay when you visit Tamborine Mountain (Accommodation Options)

There are many luxury options on the mountain so you really are spoilt for choice.

We adore Witches Falls Cottages and I promise you that they will bewitch you with their attention to detail and beautiful cottages.

Found opposite Witches Falls after whom they are named they are the perfect retreat for couples seeking to relax in the privacy of their own cottage and garden.

We have stayed at Pethers a number of times and have absolutely loved it every time. Enjoy a drink at the bar and dinner in the restaurant with the sounds and sights of the rainforest at night all around you.

Even better though is the morning after when you are delivered of the breakfast basket which contains all you need for a morning feast.

Pethers living room in a treehouse at Tamborine Moutain.

In the summer we sat on our large verandah enjoying our food and watching the wildlife of the rainforest around us including a pademelon foraging for her own breakfast! Pethers is a wonderful place to relax and unwind from the stresses of life.

We have also visited in the winter when the mountain is cooler and it was lovely and cosy snuggling up with the fire on and enjoying some down time from our hectic lives.

Pethers is one of our top choices for accommodation when we stay at Tamborine Mountain.

Breakfast on a balcony surrounded by lush green forest.

Mid-range accommodation

We spent one evening at Lisson Grove. This is a great mid-range option for couples.

Different prices are available depending on your choice of Luxury or Premium Cottage options.

The cottages are nicely decorated though the one we stayed in was perhaps a little worn round the edges. It does however provide a private getaway for those seeking a more affordable option.

If you only plan to spend one night on the mountain Lisson Grove is a great choice.

Where to eat at Tamborone Mountain Australia

There are many restaurants to choose from on Mt Tamborine and we have tried a few (I have also spoken to residents on the mountain and these are the ones that come highly recommended!)

Just make sure you book in advance as they do get very busy.

The three little pigs Tamborine Mountain is a popular restaurant. We love this restaurant with all its little pig ornaments in keeping with its great name! For more information check out their Facebook page.

Clancys’s Irish Bar

A great atmosphere makes this bar and restaurant a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike! The food is also highly recommended! Pop in for a drink but if you want food I would recommend reserving a table in high season as we have missed out when they have been fully booked!

Bit of a theme going on here with names! This tiny restaurant offers some beautiful meat dishes as well as great cocktails! Make sure to reserve as it is a small venue!

Prawns and pork served on a wooden platter with potatoes.

Visiting Tamborine Mountain cheat sheet

Mt Tamborine is located in South East Queensland which means it has a semi-tropical climate. In summer it is hot, wet and humid and the winters are generally warm and dry.

The busiest time on the mountain is in the cooler winter months so book well ahead if you are planning a trip.

I prefer hiking in cooler weather but whenever you go make sure you take a hat, suncream and plenty of water with you.

If you are planning to visit for the day and do not have a car then a tour maybe your best option.

If you are visiting Mt T it is important to remember we all need to do our bit to respect the environment and ensure it is just as beautiful in years to come! So…

  • Pick up your litter and take it home!
  • Stick to the paths – it was worrying how many people we saw straying from the designated areas. One guy completely ignored the signs and clambered over a fence to walk behind a waterfall.
  • Leave your pets at home!
  • If you are heading to Tamborine Mountain in winter make sure to book well ahead as this is peak season and it can get busy.
  • If you are hiking wear sensible walking shoes, take water, sun protection and bug spray.
  • There is an IGA in North Tamborine.
  • Petrol is available at the Caltex Garage – 5 Main Western Road (near the IGA)

You can find more about planning a trip to Queensland in many articles on this website. I recommend starting with my Queensland bucket list which will provide inspiration for your travels.

Where is Tamborine Mountain?

Firstly for our interstate and overseas visitors, where is Tamborine Mountain ?  Well Mt Tamborine is located in the Gold Coast Hinterland, about one hour’s drive from Brisbane or an hour’s drive from the Gold Coast.

Keep reading below for tips on how to get to Tamborine Mountain from popular tourist destinations such as the Gold Coast to Tamborine Mountain and Brisbane to Mount Tamborine .

Mount Tamborine National Park: Mount Tamborine Walks & Waterfalls

Of course when it comes to what to do in Mt Tamborine , the highlight is the stunning Mount Tamborine National Park .  The Tamborine Mountain National Park is the perfect place for a walk through the subtropical rainforest.  Here you can explore a diverse range of landscapes, see beautiful Mt Tamborine waterfalls , walk along lovely flowing creeks and streams as well as spot local wildlife.

There is a variety of Mount Tamborine walks to choose from across six different sections.  Most of the Mt Tamborine walks are relatively easy with people, including children of all fitnesses level able to enjoy them.

Below I’ve provided details of the various sections and walks available so you can choose the perfect Mt Tamborine rainforest walk for your family.

Cedar Creek Section

Cedar Creek Falls Mt Tamborine

This section is a family favourite due to the Cedar Creek Falls as well as the Cedar Creek rock pools, the only Tamborine Mountain rock pools you can swim in.

It is an easy (grade 1) 500m return walk to the Cedar Creek Falls lookout – you can even take a stroller along this path.  From the lookout, you get a great view of the falls and rock pools.

From the lookout, you can continue to the Cedar Creek rock pools which is an additional 600m return (so the entire circuit is 1.1km).  The track to the rock pools is well maintained; however it does have a fairly steep decline and of course incline on the way back (grade 3).

At the rock pools, you can choose to go swimming in various rock pools or cool off under the Cedar Creek Falls (note that the water is freezing, even in the middle of summer).  If you decide to go into the rock pools, you will need to climb over the rocks which can be a bit challenging, so keep this in mind.

Make sure you bring some water shoes to protect your feet and provide some additional grip for climbing over the rocks.

Parking at Cedar Creek Falls, Mt Tamborine , can a real nightmare here as its reasonably limited.  There is a small amount of parking at the top of the hill, which will add quite a bit of time onto your walk down to the falls and it’s going to be a steep walk back up.  Another suggestion is to park at the back of Thunderbird Park and take their walking track to the falls, which won’t decrease your walking time, but the walk is flat.

Find out more about visiting Cedar Creek here.

Location : Cedar Creek Falls Road

Witches Falls Section

For those looking for the longer Mt Tamborine hikes , then consider the Witches Falls, Mt Tamborine section.  There are two Mount Tamborine hikes here, both graded level 4, so will require a reasonable level of fitness and probably best not attempted with little ones that aren’t keen on walking far.

The first walk is a 3.6km circuit which will take you around 1 hour to complete.  This circuit starts with a zig-zag down the mountain pass an open forest of banksia trees and then into the rainforest where you will see giant strangler figs and past lovely little seasonal lagoons (best seen after rainfall).  Provided there has been some decent rainfall; you will also see the Witches Falls from the lookout, which is a short 200m detour from the main track.

If you want one of the longer Mount Tamborine hikes , you can continue on a further 2.6km return circuit along the Witches Chase Track.  This part of the circuit will take a further 1 hour to complete and is also graded level 4.  Along this walk, you will see the eucalypt forest and rainforest with large red cedar trees as well as pass through a field of boulders.

Location : Manitzky Road

Curtis Falls / Joalah Section

Curtis Waterfalls Mt Tamborine

Another firm family favourite when it comes to Tamborine Mountain hikes is the walk to Curtis Falls.  This is an absolutely beautiful walk, as you slip into the dense rainforest where you can see giant fig stranglers, staghorn, a colony of bats, flowing streams and of course the gorgeous Curtis Falls.

The walk to Curtis Falls – Mt Tamborine is just 1.1 km return and is a relatively easy 30 minute walk (although it is grade level 3).  This is the only Mount Tamborine waterfall that is viewed from the bottom and it also runs all year round.

From the falls, you can continue further and take the Lower Creek Circuit which is an additional 1.4 km and will take around an hour to complete.

Do note that this Mount Tamborine rainforest walk does involve a creek crossing over rocks which will be challenging for some.  You could choose not to cross the creek though and return on the same track rather than completing the circuit.

The Lower Creek Circuit is graded level 4, but I think this is mainly due to the creek crossing as the rest of the walk is not too difficult.  The walk is absolutely enchanting though and well worth it, even if you do return on the same track.

There is limited car parking at the Curtis Falls entrance, but there is quite a lot of street parking in the surrounding area, so this shouldn’t be a problem.  The walk from the surrounding streets is all flat too. You can also park around the shops at Eagle Heights Road and take the 400m track from here.

Check out our YouTube video of Curtis Falls and the Lower Creek Circuit here.

Location : Dapsang Drive

The Knoll Section

Another one of the good Mount Tamborine bush walks for those that want to check out waterfalls is the Sandy Creek Circuit.

Located in the Knoll section, the Sandy Creek Circuit takes you to the Cameron Falls Lookout.  This walk is a 2.6 km circuit which takes around 1 hour to complete and is graded level 4. Along the walk, you’ll see flooded gums and piccabeen groves.

Time your walk to finish with a picnic, as the picnic area is lovely with great views across to Flinders Peak and Brisbane.

Location : Knoll Road

Palm Grove Section

If you prefer to get away from the other tourists, one of the more quieter Mt Tamborine walking tracks can be found in the Palm Grove Section.

There are two walks here the 2.7km Palm Grove circuit which takes around 1 hour, and the Jenyns circuit which is a further 2.1 km and takes an additional 1.5 hours to complete.  Both of these Mt Tamborine rainforest walks are graded level 4.

Along the Palm Grove circuit, you will see towering palms, giant gums, hoop pines and ancient cycads.  If you continue onto the longer circuit, you will also see the Jenyns Falls.

Location : You can access this walk either via Palm Grove Avenue or Curtis Road – both areas have parking, although keep in mind that the Curtis Road access has stairs.

MacDonald Section

The last of the Tamborine Mountain bush walks is in the McDonald Section.  The MacDonald Rainforest circuit is a relatively flat 1.4 km circuit (graded level 3), which will take only 35 minutes to complete, so perfect for families with small children.

Along the MacDonald Rainforest circuit, you’ll walk through lush rainforest and peaceful palm groves.  This is a popular walk for bird watchers.

Location : Wongawallan Road

Check out the Mt Tamborine Markets

If you can time it right, another one of the great Mount Tamborine activities is a visit to one of the local markets to pick up some great local produce and bargains.

There are three different Tamborine Mountain Markets to choose from:

Mt Tamborine Skywalk

The Mt Tamborine Skywalk is a popular family attraction.  Located in 30 pristine acres of lush sub-tropical rainforest, the Tamborine Mountain Skywalk is the perfect place to get a bird’s eye view of the rainforest.

Families will love strolling along the 1.5km walk, which is a combination of rainforest floor tracks as well as the 300 metres of steel bridges that are set in the upper canopy of the rainforest.  The highlight though is the 40 metre cantilever bridge which at the height of 30 metres provides brilliant views of the creek and rainforest below.

As well as Mount Tamborine walking trails , the attraction features the Eco Gallery which has a display of Australian rainforest flora and fauna.

It is recommended that you allow around 45 minutes to get the most out of your visit to the attraction.

Unfortunately the only way to get to Mount Tamborine is by your own car or via a day tour (see the previous section).  While you could, of course, get a taxi or uber to Mt Tamborine, all the attractions are well spread out, so you’d need a vehicle to get around once there as well.

I’d even recommend hiring a car just for the day – so much easier and you can have complete freedom of the places you visit.

  • Gold Coast to Mt Tamborine : Approximately one hour, depending on where you are coming from on the Gold Coast.
  • Brisbane to Mt Tamborine : Approximately one hour from the Brisbane CBD.

Tamborine Mountain, or is it Mount Tamborine? It’s Tamborine Mountain and the suburbs of North Tamborine, Mount Tamborine and Eagle Heights form this beautiful hinterland destination. With scenic drives past wineries, craft shops and other attractions, along with relaxing Tamborine Mountain walks and waterfalls, there’s plenty to do in this enchanting mountain escape.

Tamborine Mountain is home to Queensland’s oldest national park and the third oldest national park in the world. Located in the southern end of the Mount Warning central magma plug of a once fiery shield volcano, after furious explosions around 20 million years ago, the landscape was coated in rich volcanic earth.

The biggest erosion caldera in the southern hemisphere – one of the largest in the world – was formed. It remains possibly the best-preserved shield volcano in the southern hemisphere.

Welcome to my home.

It’s the best waterfall in Tamborine Mountain and the only waterfall that can be viewed from the bottom of the fall.

This Tamborine Mountain waterfall is fed by Cedar Creek, which is a permanent running creek that always has flowing water.

The 1.1km return walk down to the falls and Cedar Creek is a Class 3 track with steps and one of the more popular Mount Tamborine walks through the national park.

After visiting the falls take the Lower Creek circuit across Cedar Creek, which is an awesome area to see fungi and giant strangler figs.

Curtis Falls is host to a very special glow-worm colony, so access to the falls and rock pool is prohibited.

But you still get a great view and plenty of photo opportunities from the viewing area.

Getting to Curtis Falls: The best place to park is in Dapsang Drive off Eagle Heights Roa or access the walk from Curtis Corner at the T-junction of Eagle Heights Road and Giessmann Drive, which has eateries and a few tourist shops.

Combine a walk to the falls with a stroll past the Main Street shops, which has a post office, library, bakery and boutiques.

Cameron Falls lookout has a spectacular view of the falls, with Mount Flinders and Brisbane in the distance.

Getting to Cameron Falls:  At the end of Main Street in Tamborine Mountain is Knoll Road National Park, where a track follows Sandy Creek to Cameron Falls.

Witches Falls is on the popular Witches Chase hiking trail and there’s a platform where you can soak up the energy of the falls as you admire its gushing beauty.

Getting to Witches Falls: Park in the Main Western Road car park opposite Hartley Road.

Mount Tamborine Walks

Mt Tamborine walks

Tamborine Mountain National Park  is home to an extraordinary natural environment with an abundance of animals and plants.

According to the Queensland Environment and Protection Agency, 85 per cent of fauna and 65 per cent of flora in the Gold Coast City area can be found within the park.

It’s home to the rare Albert’s lyrebird, one of the world’s largest skinks, the land mullet and the Richmond birdwing butterfly.

mount tamborine walks

The Witches Falls section of Tamborine Mountain National Park was declared in 1908 and is the oldest part of the park.

This Tamborine Mountain walk can be done as a 3.1 km moderate walk, that should take around one hour but keen walkers can continue for another 2.7km.

There are two ways to get to the Witches Falls Circuit, both from the car park at Main Western Road.

The southern end starts off a little steep but it flattens out and the landscape changes from forest to lagoons.

The entry at the northern end begins as an easy-walking trail behind the cemetery then descends into a valley through the rainforest and natural rock steps.

Both trails lead to the Witches Falls viewing platform provides a fabulous view of the waterfall.

Past the waterfall, the track continues along the cliff through sub-tropical rainforest, past impressive boulder formations.

One of the most delightful walking tracks in Mount Tamborine area is the Cedar Creek Circuit (3.2 km).

Highlights of this walk include cascades, rock pools, dry rainforests and hoop pines.

Cedar Creek Falls Lookout is an easy walk suitable for strollers and wheelchairs while the walk to the Cedar Creek rockpools offers cool swimming holes as a reward.

Cedar Creek Waterfalls is a gentle tumbling stream with swimming holes.

Access to this circuit is near Thunderbird Park along Tamborine Mountain Road.

The Palm Grove Circuit is well worth the hike for its breathtaking rainforest scenery, strangler figs and ghost gums.

Entry to the track is via Curtis Road or Palm Grove Road.

Tamborine Mountain Markets

There’s a thriving creative community living in Tamborine Mountain and, not surprisingly, there are four markets.

Mount Tamborine markets

The Tamborine Country Market is held every second Sunday at the Tamborine Mountain Show Grounds at the roundabout of Main Western Road and Bartle Road.

The Tamborine Country Market is renown for its artisan wares and is a good market to shop for handmade local products.

The market also has stalls selling a range of other things you would expect to see in a market, such as fruit and vegetables, plants, clothing and local cheese.

It’s the place to go for a family outing as there’s a play area for the kids and shady trees to shelter from the sun.

markets tamborine mountain

The Tamborine Mountain School Markets is on the last Sunday of each month in the car park opposite the state school on Long Road.

The markets have food stalls, locally made wares, fresh fruit and vegetables, plants and an array of regionally produced goodies.

The School Markets are brilliant for their assortment of second-hand wares – bargains for antique hunters are often to be found.

Things to do Mt Tamborine

Located at the showgrounds, The Green Shed is where the locals from across the mountain bring their surplus fruit and vegetables, flowers, honey, herbs and plants to sell.

Most are organically grown and of high quality and freshly picked.

It’s open from 7 am to noon every Sunday and the range on offer does depend on the season.

Organised through the Tamborine Mountain Local Producers Association Inc., it’s a non-profit venture.

It’s one of those little secrets not many visitors hear about but it’s perfect for stocking up for your week’s fresh supplies.

Tamborine Mountain shops

A charming collection of gift and craft shops, boutiques and cafes, browsing through the shops along Tamborine Mountain’s Gallery Walk is a delightful way to spend the day.

Things you might find here include handmade jewellery, pottery, Australian art and organic skincare products.

The German Cuckoo Clock Nest is an enchanting Bavarian Chalet full of all kinds of clocks, from authentic Cuckoo Clocks made in Germany to Grandfather Clocks.

Browse through a bookshop, buy some gourmet tea and taste handmade chocolates.

mt tamborine walks

The Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens are another of the mountain’s treasures.

Located off Forsythia Drive (off Long Road) they are open every day during daylight hours and admission is free.

Walkways lead to specialised gardens, such as a Japanese Garden, rainforest section with a beautiful palm grove, a rose garden, orchid house and wisteria walk.

A lake with a pretty stone bridge forms a central feature to the gardens.

No matter what time of the year you visit, there is always something flowering.

Bring a picnic basket and rug as the gardens are fantastic providing fun and interesting things to see and do for all ages.

Check out the birds currently nesting in one of the sculptures in the lake.

Facilities include covered pavilion with picnic tables and toilets.

There are no BBQ facilities and dogs are not allowed in the gardens.

Maintained by the volunteers of the Garden Club their main event each year is called Springtime on the Mountain , held annually in September.

Along with activities in the gardens themselves there are trails organised for you to visit private gardens across the mountain.

Passes are reasonably priced at $20 and free for children.

Things to do in Mt Tamborine

This is one treasure you won’t find on most tourist brochures and one I love because it’s dog-friendly!

The small park is remnant rainforest being regenerated by the Tamborine Mountain Landcare and there is an area for off-street parking from the Licuala Drive entry.

A paved track suitable for prams and wheelchairs leads you around this small protected reserve and there are few interpretive signs identifying plants and key elements.

You will often see land mullets and frogs, if you look closely, and meet locals, like me, walking this peaceful track.

If the mountain has had recent rain, keep an eye out for the red-eyed green tree frogs.

They come down from the forest canopy after rain to breed.

At night in the park, the chorus of males calling for a mate is very loud and makes them easier to find.

Don’t forget the insect repellent as the mosquitoes can be friendly.

There is much more to see on your visit to Tamborine Mountain and I hope you enjoy these tips from my backyard.

Tamborine Skywalk

If you want to experience the rainforest in comfort, the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a 1.5km rainforest adventure set in a private rainforest beside Cedar Creek.

Although the 45-minute walk meanders across the forest floor, the highlight of the Tamborine Skywalk is being able to walk along steel bridges high in the forest canopy.

There’s a 40m cantilever bridge that allows you to walk 30m above the creek and rainforest offering a different perspective of the forest.

Tamborine Skywalk also has an Eco Gallery, with displays of Australian rainforest flora and fauna, a café and gift shop.

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is at 333 Geissmann Drive, North Tamborine. It’s open from 9.30 am to 5 pm (last entry to the walk is at 4 pm). Admission $19.50 (adult), $9.50 (child under 16), free (child under 5).

Tamborine Mountain lookout

A drive around Tamborine Mountain, stopping whenever and wherever the mood takes you, is a lovely way to spend the day.

Besides stopping to stretch the legs on a bushwalk, a coffee and cake in one of the charming cafes or a browse through markets and shops, there are several lookouts on Tamborine Mountain.

Some bushwalking tracks have stunning lookouts but if you’re on the road, make sure to stop at these the Mount Tamborine Beacon Lookout on Beacon Road and the Rotary Lookout lookout to watch the hang gliders launching off the cliff.

mount tamborine winery

A self-drive tour of the wineries and distilleries of Tamborine Mountain is a fun way to explore or if you plan on drinking, an organised tour where someone else does the driving is a great option.

Here are some wineries and other places to visit:

  • Witches Falls Winery (79 Main Western Rd, North Tamborine) – grapes are from the granite belt.
  • Cedar Creek Estate (104-144 Hartley Rd, North Tamborine) – the winery has a lovely restaurant and is a popular destination for Mount Tamborine weddings.
  • Tamborine Mountain Distillery (87-91 Beacon Road, Tamborine Mountain) – a picturesque Tudor-style building with a tasting room. It’s the spot to shop for delicious liqueurs brewed on the premises and packaged in impressive hand-painted bottles.
  • Witches Chase Cheese Company (165-185 Long Road, North Tamborine) – sample local cheeses and taste craft beer at the Fortitude Brewing Company, which are also on the premises.

While there are cafes, pubs and bistros for a casual bite, these Tamborine Mountain are truly unique restaurants and worth putting on your list for a special outing.

  • Hampton Estate Wines (52 Bartle Rd, Tamborine Mountain ) – fine dining with amazing views of the Gold Coast.
  • Hickory (Corner of Main Street and Main Western Road, Tamborine Mountain) –
  • Old Church Restaurant (216 Long Road, Eagle Heights) – dine in a historic church for a heavenly experience.
  • George’s Paragon Seafood Restaurant (141 Long Road, Eagle Heights) – the Gold Coast’s favourite seafood restaurant has a branch in the hinterland.

Tamborine Mountain Weather

A Tamborine Mountain escape is a romantic way to spend a few days. Rug up in front of the fireplace in a country lodge or a cosy B&B. Or escape to the hinterland in summer for a cool change.

Guide to mt tamborine waterfalls incl. a map to plan your visit.

Whether you’re in Brisbane or the Gold Coast , Mount Tamborine is a perfect day trip away from the city. If you’ve been following my blog, you know how much I love waterfalls. So after listing the Mt Tamborine waterfalls among the best waterfalls near Brisbane and the best day trips for waterfall lovers in Byron Bay , I thought it would be good to publish more details about them.

The best time to visit Mt Tamborine waterfalls is during the wet season in summer, after the rain. However, the walks in Mount Tamborine can get muddy and slippery after the rain.

The four Mt Tamborine waterfalls

The list goes from North to South. The numbers are in reference to the map of Mt Tamborine waterfalls at the bottom of the article.

1. Cedar Creek Falls

View of Waterfall and upper rock pools at Cedar Creek in Mount Tamborine from the lookout

If you’re looking for somewhere to have a dip, Cedar Creek Falls is the only waterfall I know in Mount Tamborine where you can swim . There’s a natural slide just next to the waterfall that makes it even more fun. It’s one of the best rock pools near Brisbane .

It’s a very scenic place. However, don’t expect to see the more impressive falls of the same name that are near the Whitsundays ! There’s also another Cedar Creek waterfall in Samford , near Brisbane.

During summer, the rock pools are Mount Tamborine’s most popular attraction .

So you’d better arrive early if you’re hoping to avoid the crowd. Parking is very limited. If you’re not an early riser, you may be lucky and find a spot around lunchtime. The limited car park prevents the falls from being overcrowded to preserve them. Don’t expect a relaxing time if you visit during weekends. It’s not rare to have groups hanging at the falls with loud music and alcohol.

If it has rained a few days before, the falls are stronger and transform the pool into a spa. It’s less impressive outside the wet season, but the gorge still offers lovely views and it’s a lot quieter.

The 1.5km walk return from the car park to the bottom of the falls is easy, and there are a few viewing platforms on the way. It’s a boardwalk down to the lookout. Then there are a few stairs to the rock pool. But you’ll need to scramble on the boulders to make your way to the lower rockpools. There are signs not to go to the higher rock pools.

How to get there : Aim for the car park at the end of Cedar Creek Falls Road. It’s a busy spot – especially during a sunny weekend. Be ready to wait for a parking spot to free up if you don’t come early.

Responsible travel tip : Unfortunately, the place isn’t just popular for nature-lovers. Some people leave their rubbish down there. Be smarter to help preserve this beautiful spot: take back your rubbish and the ones you find on your way!

2. Cameron Falls

You see Cameron Falls from a platform that also provides views across the valley to Flinders Peak and the south of Brisbane . Cameron Falls Lookout is on a branch track on the easy 2.6-km Sandy Creek Circuit.

Cameron Falls is a seasonal waterfall that is fed by the rain. The lookout isn’t facing the falls and trees block the views so don’t expect a wow-effect when visiting this one. You’ll wish they built the platform a little bit more to the left really. The circuit then goes to the top of the falls, where the view is maybe better than at the lookout itself (fewer trees).

How to get there : You’ll find a car park on the left at the top of Knoll Road.

Trees in the foreground with a big fall in the background (Cameron Falls in Mount Tamborine)

3. Curtis Falls

Curtis Falls are my favourite Mt Tamborine waterfalls .

It’s a lovely short 700-meter walk across the lush rainforest to access the viewing platform at the bottom of the falls. It took us about 10 minutes to reach the lookout platform. Although the plunge isn’t impressive, I love all the vegetation around and the large pool at the base. It’s the most photogenic waterfall in Mount Tamborine.

It’s prohibited to access the falls outside the platform, thus you are not allowed to swim in the rock pool. This is to protect a glow worms colony . If you stay after dark you may get a chance to see them. I have never tried it at Curtis Falls but I know it could be magical. I loved this experience at Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park  and at the Glow Worm Cave .

How to get there : From Eagle Heights Road, you’ll see a sign to turn to Dapsang Drive to reach the car park.

Small waterfall with a pool and surrounded by lush rainforest (Curtis Falls, Mount Tamborine)

4. Witches Falls

You will need to hike the 3-kilometre Witches Falls Circuit or Witches Falls Track, two of the longest hikes in Mount Tamborine, to access the Witches Falls viewing deck.

Like Cameron Falls, Witches Falls only flow after the recent rain . But the walk in the forest is lovely even when there is no water plunging down.

You may want to combine your visit with the winery and the lovely romantic cottage nearby *. Doesn’t it sound like a great romantic escape ? It’s my favourite winery in Mt Tamborine !

How to get there : The car park is on Main Western Road.

Jenyns Falls

This last waterfall on my Mt Tamborine waterfalls list,  Jenyns Falls , is not accessible anymore . They had to close the lookout for safety reasons and there is no plan to reopen it so far. The Jenyns Circuit no longer provide a view of the falls, unfortunately.
