Central Fire Station
One of the oldest existing fire station's in Singapore, the Central Fire Station is loaded with a rich history, massive architectural beauty and interactive tours. Bring your family for an infamous tour and become immersed in previous missions and rich Singapore service history.
This brick building dressed in red and white accents was built in 1908. Still being used today, the watchtower is now a living quarter for working firemen.
On Saturday mornings the fire station crew lets children 'test' their equipment, allowing them to climb into the trucks, holding the water hoses, ride on the engines and take pictures. The friendly firemen will be there to explain and answer all the curious questions from the children.
After all outdoor fun, make sure to have some time left to visit the Civil Defense Heritage Gallery, which is a small fire-fighting museum that houses historical artifacts along with interactive games and activities on the second leve.
The museum is open from 10am - 5pm Tuesdays to Sundays. The fire station is only open for the public on Saturdays from 9 to 11am.
Admission is free.

62 Hill Street Singapore, 179367
The Central Fire Station is the oldest surviving fire station in Singapore. Situated not far from the Armenian Church and the Former Hill Street Police Station , the iconic building is a living monument to the local firefighting force.
Frequent Outbreaks of Fire
In nineteenth-century Singapore, fire outbreaks were rampant in Singapore and were a major problem for the British Administration. This was because many houses were built using flammable materials such as wood and attap, which posed a serious fire hazard. Moreover, their close proximity to one another also meant that fires could spread very quickly.
Early firefighting squads consisted of poorly trained men, including soldiers, convicts, and volunteers. It was only in 1888 that the first organised team of firefighters, the Singapore Fire Brigade, was established, and the first purpose-built fire station was constructed on Cross Street. G. P. Owen, then Secretary of the Singapore Cricket Club, was appointed the founding superintendent of the Singapore Fire Brigade.
New Era for the Singapore Fire Brigade
In 1904, a professional firefighter named Montague W. Pett arrived from England and succeeded Owen as Superintendent of the Singapore Fire Brigade. Under Pett’s leadership, the poorly trained firefighting force was transformed into a modern fire brigade. He championed the building of the Central Fire Station as he believed that a modern, well-equipped fire station was necessary for a town. Construction of the new fire station commenced at the foot of Fort Canning Hill on Hill Street in 1908.
The Central Fire Station was completed in 1909. It boasted a squad of fully motorised fire trucks which effectively replaced the outdated horse-drawn engines. The new fire engines were developed and produced by the famous London steam engine manufacturer Merryweathers & Sons. They greatly enhanced the efficiency of the local fire service in their response to emergencies.
In addition, the fire station also provided accommodation for the firefighters. Drills and exercises could be conducted on the large parade square within the compound.
Second World War
As the threat of war loomed, the British Administration formed the Auxiliary Fire Service in 1939 to strengthen the local firefighting force and to deal with any possible wartime emergencies such as air raids. The Central Fire Station’s red-and-white brickwork was painted over with camouflage paint in an attempt to conceal the building from enemy bomber pilots. Nevertheless, the fire station sustained numerous direct hits from falling bombs.
When Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942, most of the fire brigade’s European members were marched off to Changi Prison as prisoners-of-war. Those who remained in the force carried on with their duties under the direction of Victor G. Donough, who served as Superintendent at the Central Fire Station during the Japanese Occupation (1942–1945).
Response to Emergencies
The Central Fire Station continued to function after the war. Firefighters based in this historic fire station were involved in various national emergencies and rescue operations that hit post-war and post-independent Singapore. These included the ravaging fires at Bukit Ho Swee in 1961 and the disastrous collapse of Hotel New World in 1986.
Architecture
Designed by William Ferguson, the building’s red-and-white rusticated façade is a distinctive characteristic of what is commonly known as ‘blood-and-bandage’ architecture. In the case of the Central Fire Station, this feature coincidentally and aptly underscores the firefighters’ work mission to rescue and save. The ‘blood’ points to the exposed red bricks on the façade, while the ‘bandage’ refers to the plaster layovers that are painted white. This architectural style was popularised during the Edwardian era (1901–1910).
Another outstanding feature of the fire station is its impressive lookout tower, which rises to a height of about 110 feet (34 metres). A fireman was always stationed in the tower to spot any outbreaks of fire in the vicinity. Flanked by twin cupolas, a triangular pediment bearing the monogram of the Singapore Fire Brigade fronts the façade’s midsection. Behind the row of bright red shutter doors are fire engines and rescue vehicles on standby for activation.
Central Fire Station Today
In 2001, the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery located in the station was opened to the public. Its exhibits provide visitors with insights into the history of the firefighting force in Singapore from its humble beginnings to the established force that it is today.
The Central Fire Station is still operational today and serves an area covering the Central Business District and Chinatown.
Our National Monuments
Our National Monuments are an integral part of Singapore’s built heritage, which the National Heritage Board (NHB) preserves and promotes for posterity. They are monuments and sites that are accorded the highest level of protection in Singapore.

Sassy mama field trip: in the line of duty – a visit to central fire station.
In our pre-kids era we never thought we’d appreciate activities that would force us out of the house early on a Saturday morning. Activities like that are now pure gold . “Funny” how things change.
Apparently every fire station in Singapore has an open house on Saturday mornings between 9am and 11am. So goodbye long, leisurely weekend breakfast and hello fire station visit!
If you can manage to plan a bit ahead we would definitely recommend going to the Central Fire Station on Hill Street, just off Clarke Quay, because it is connected with the same building as the Civil Defense Heritage Museum . Now doesn’t that sound like fun mamas, Civil Defense Heritage Museum?! Truth is, your little ones, especially if they are boys, will love it.
Mentally satisfied that Singapore has what it takes in case of a general disaster of some sort, we left and headed down to Clarke Quay just in time for a quick lunch followed by gelato.
Saturday morning outing with the boys – check!

SINGAPORE: Singapore's first "smart" fire station officially launched in Punggol on Friday (Feb 25), equipped with a range of technologies such as facial recognition for automated access control and the use of virtual reality to boost training.
Co-located with the new Punggol Neighbourhood Police Centre, it is the 23rd fire station in Singapore and has been in operation since Dec 30.
It will provide emergency response for Punggol town, including upcoming developments such as Punggol Digital District.
Both the fire station and the police centre share common spaces such as the gymnasium, smart classrooms and a multi-facade training tower, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in a joint media release.
This will facilitate the sharing of information and resources, as well as foster "enhanced rapport" within the Home Team, the agencies added.
There is also a community area that will allow SCDF and SPF to carry out community engagement training as well as outreach programmes.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the fire station and the police centre on Friday, Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean said they are "an important addition" to the facilities in Punggol.
"A prepared community can make a huge difference during emergencies and help save lives. Punggol Fire Station and Punggol NPC will continue to play a key role towards achieving the Home Team’s mission – working together as one Home Team, and in partnership with the community – to keep Singapore safe and secure," said Mr Teo.
NEW TECHNOLOGIES
Automation, facial recognition and licence plate reader technologies are used at Punggol Fire Station to enhance security.
The automated fire station access control system, jointly conceptualised with the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX), enables self-registration of visitors using either physical identity cards or digital NRICs on the Singpass app.
This also frees up officers from patrolling or performing sentry duties, allowing them to focus on crucial frontline operational duties instead.
Also jointly developed with HTX is an integrated building management system that features a centralised console for monitoring and controlling various systems such as lights and fans.
It also allows for the monitoring of electrical services, water tanks, main fire alarm systems and lift services. Utility consumption reports can also be generated to identify abnormalities and enable prompt follow-up action.
A smart classroom aims to enhance training for fire station staff.
Equipped with interactive digital screens with live-streaming capabilities, it reduces the need for employees to travel physically to the Civil Defence Academy for certain training courses, lessons and assessments, said SCDF and SPF.
The smart classroom will also come with a training simulator. When fully developed, the Road Traffic Accident Extended Reality simulator will enhance training such as in vehicular extrication.
Another feature at Punggol Fire Station is a multi-facade training tower, the first of its kind in fire stations in Singapore.
Each floor of the seven-storey training tower has different simulations, such as residential apartment blocks, a warehouse, a commercial building and the deck of a ship.
"These offer the firefighters a range of scenarios beyond the day-to-day incidents that they typically respond to and thereby allowing them to hone and sharpen their repertoire of skills," said SCDF and SPF.
Other features include a 30m-long confined space training simulator, a dedicated post-incident decontamination facility for frontline responders, as well as an automated medical store with a self-checkout system that makes use of sensors and tracking devices to detect items taken.
It also has the largest green landscape area among all the SCDF's fire stations, with nine gardens spanning 2,500 sq m of plants. The station attained the BCA's Green Mark Gold Award in March 2020.

4 law enforcement officers killed while serving warrant in North Carolina
Four officers were fatally shot as a U.S. marshals task force was serving a warrant at a home Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina, officials said. A suspected shooter was also dead.
A marshal and two local officers working with the fugitive task force were killed in the gunfire around 1:30 p.m. Gov. Roy Cooper said that “two state Department of Adult Correction officers” had died.
The city's police chief announced Monday night that a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer who had been wounded, Joshua Eyer, had also died.
"It was just last month I was in this very room congratulating Officer Eyer for becoming officer of the month in April," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said. "And he certainly dedicated his life and gave his life to serve our citizens."
The identities of the other officers have not been made public.
In total, eight law enforcement officers were shot.
The deadly violence happened as a fugitive task force was serving a warrant on a suspect in possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Jennings said the fallen officers were "heroes that were just simply trying to keep our community safe."
As the task force attempted to serve the warrant, the subject of the warrant, who wasn't publicly identified, began shooting with a high-powered rifle, Jennings said. Task force members returned fire and killed the suspect in the home's front yard, he said.
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police sergeant was on the task force but was not struck by gunfire, Jennings said. The sergeant called for backup, and that's when the four responding Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were shot, Jennings said.
Police were eventually able to clear the home, Jennings said. Two people inside, one of them 17 years old, were detained as persons of interest.
Officials believe two people fired at law enforcement, Jennings said.
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, who spoke at Monday's news conference, said the community must honor the deputy marshals who lost their lives and the wounded officers.
"These are people that cared deeply about what they've done for our profession, and now today, we have to say to them how much we are grateful for what they have done," Lyles said. "Three people lost their lives today. And the most I can ask the community is that we honor and respect them for all the work they've done."
The governor called the incident "tragic" and said the state is offering assistance.
He later offered his condolences to the families and co-workers in the "brutal attack."
President Joe Biden was updated on the shooting, the White House said. Biden spoke to Cooper and "expressed his condolences," according to the White House. Federal officials, the White House said, are also in touch with authorities at the federal, state and local levels.
Eyer, the CMPD officer whose death was announced Monday night, is survived by his wife and a 3-year-old son, the police chief said.
CORRECTION (April 29, 2024, 6:40 pm ET): A previous version of this article misstated the number of U.S. marshals who were killed. One marshal was fatally shot and two local officers working with the marshals task force were also killed.
