Background on the Burgundy Wine Region

Burgundy is such a legendary wine region that it’s home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites . The Côte de Nuits , one of the most well-known sub-regions in Burgundy, is a paradise for those seeking an intimate experience with the world of fine wines. Opting for a private tour here lets you experience the heart of Burgundy. It’s home to many of the region’s grand cru estates, where you can enjoy exceptional red wines straight from ancient wine cellars. It’s particularly celebrated for its Pinot Noir-based wines and prestigious wine estates, many of which produce wines that have aging potential far beyond those based in new world wine regions.

Aside from Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune stands out as another noteworthy wine destination known for its exquisite white wine, primarily crafted from Chardonnay grapes. Here, you can participate in private wine tours with the wine producers themselves. You’ll be guided through both large houses and family-run domains, uncovering the secrets of wine production that have been honed over centuries. Each wine estate in the Burgundy region is a story in itself, often tied to the rich history of the area, including the tumultuous times of the French Revolution and the evolution of viticulture through the ages. The best ways for wine lovers to experience the Burgundy include structured day trips or self-guided tours along the wine route. Whether it’s the Golden Slope of the Côte d’Or or the heart of Chablis, each area presents a unique story of grape varieties, wine production, and local traditions.

Burgundy is not just about tasting amazing wines; it’s about soaking up the culture and history of the area. From medieval villages, the historic Clos de Vougeot Castle, to the Côte Chalonnaise, every stop is a discovery. The region’s culinary delights, like the famous Beef Bourguignon, perfectly complement bottles of Pinot Noir. Venture past the stone walls of ancient domains, and into the heart of local life, enriched with fine wines, great food, and a treasure trove of history.

About Burgundy wine tours & wine tasting in France

The vineyards of Burgundy have been producing some of France's finest and most complex wines since the 12th century, thanks to the region’s unique soil composition and climate. For centuries, Burgundy has been known for its amazing Pinot Noir reds and Chardonnays whites, but it also produces other types of wines including rosés, Riesling, and sparkling Crémant de Bourgogne (a sparkling red wine).

Burgundy is located in western France along its namesake river which flows from Switzerland through Germany before emptying into the North Sea at Rotterdam. This geographical feature makes Burgundy a very diverse region with lots of different types of vineyards located at different altitudes throughout all four seasons. Each season brings new challenges for grape growers but also provides unique opportunities depending on what kind of grapes grow best under each particular climate type.

Grape growers in this region tend to grow the following types of grapes:

  • Chardonnay (white).
  • Pinot Noir (red).
  • Gamay Noir (red).
  • Pinot Gris (white).

Burgundy is an amazing place to visit, with lots to see and do in nearby areas. The city of Dijon has been a regional capital since the Middle Ages and was once home to the French Parliament. As you might guess, this city is also famous for its mustard. There are great museums, palaces, gardens and historic buildings that make the Burgundy region worth visiting while you're in France. Dijon winery are also a great place to get started with burgundy wines.

While there are thousands of options for wine tours and tastings in Burgundy, Winalist hand-picks the best wineries and wine tasting experiences available that are certain to provide unparalleled wine experiences. You can choose a wine tasting experience in Bordeaux based on its price point, suitability for non-French speakers (though most wineries in Bordeaux, France don't require you to speak French), and their overall experience factor (i.e., how much fun they are).

Burgundy wine highlights:

  • Known for its Pinot Noir reds and Chardonnay whites.
  • Located in eastern-central France.
  • Easy commute from Paris.

History of Winemaking in Burgundy, France

The history of winemaking in Burgundy, France, is full of colorful stories. The region is so rich in history and tradition that it's considered one of the most famous wine regions in the world. From its romantic past to its modern-day reputation as one of the finest places on earth to taste some of the best wines, Burgundy has been home to some truly incredible events throughout its long history.

One aspect of Burgundy's illustrious past involves its signature grape varietal known as Pinot Noir. This particular red varietal was discovered by monks during the medieval ages and has since become an integral part of many reds produced within this region. The story goes that these monks were looking for warmer climates because their original vineyards were failing due to harsh winters; however, when they arrived at what would become known as Pinot Noir country, they found success in both making wine and growing grapes.

Another interesting fact about Burgundy's winemaking history involves Chardonnay, a white varietal which also originated within this region centuries ago. This wine type popularity skyrocketed around 1962 when California started producing high quality examples using this grape type (which prompted other countries, including France itself).

There are plenty of beautiful wine routes in Burgundy. One of the most famous is the Grands Crus de Bourgogne route. The Grands Crus de Bourgogne route (from Dijon to Santenay via Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune), which crosses many vineyards and wine villages, won’t disappoint.

On your way through this route, you’re bound to find several activities, estates, and guest houses that will gladly offer you tastings and local pleasures.

If you arrive at Dijon by train, you will be right in the heart of the capital of Burgundy! Visit the gourmet shops full of traditions (mustard, gingerbread, etc.). The owl's route allows you to discover the city easily.

The surrounding villages transport you to Beaune and its famous hospice. But above all, you can take the Grands Crus de Bourgogne route (from Dijon to Santenay via Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune) which crosses the vineyard and no less than 35 wine villages.

You will find on your way a number of activities, estates and guest houses which will gladly offer you a tasting of local pleasures.

Burgundy is a beautiful place to visit year-round, but if you want to do some wine tasting in Burgundy, spring and fall are the best times of year for this activity. Spring and fall offer the most temperate climates. Summer can be extremely hot (and humid) in Burgundy especially since most vineyards are located on hillsides near rivers or streams for irrigation purposes.

So, this time of year may not boast the most pleasant weather for hiking around vineyards looking at grapes being grown. Additionally, during the winter months, some wineries close because tourists won’t travel to cold areas like this one during those months. However, some Burgundy wineries are open year-round.

Burgundy primarily produces white and red wines, along with some rosés. The most common grapes grown in Burgundy include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Auxerrois.

The white wines of the region tend to be lighter-bodied than those produced in other regions of France, such as the Chablis or Champagne region. They're often made from 100% Chardonnay grapes that are fermented separately from their skins first before being blended together later on in the process. The resulting product is a fragrant but dry wine with hints of citrus fruit flavors like grapefruit and lemon peel alongside notes of caramelized sugar or honeyed sweetness.

Red Burgundies tend toward earthier flavors than their counterparts made elsewhere throughout France because they spend time fermenting inside large oak barrels before being bottled.

Burgundy wine tours: visit the UNESCO-listed climats

In fact, wine tours in Burgundy include many of these sights (and wines) and will make for an unforgettable experience in the French wine country. Just imagine yourself exploring wild forests while following trained dogs in the search of the coveted truffles of the area, or picture yourself and your friends on an iconic Citroen 2CV touring the local vineyards to take part in a wine tasting. If you prefer to get views from the air… you can “catch a ride” on a hot air balloon or helicopter to fly over some of the most beautiful châteaux in France or you can simply take a bike tour and visit Burgundy’s castles at your own pace.

A hallmark of wine-making in Burgundy is, undoubtedly, its climats , precisely delineated plots of land that enjoy specific geological and climatic conditions. These small plots of vines were included on UNESCO ’s World Heritage list in 2015 because when combined with the savoir-faire of the local wine-makers, they produce exceptional Bourgogne appellations from the region’s main varietals: Pinot Noir for reds and Chardonnay for whites. Wines are so outstanding that they are famous all around the globe.

Hillsides are covered in vines, a rich and fascinating natural heritage and history, remarkable climats , and some of the most acclaimed wines in the world. A simple wine-tasting Burgundy might just win your heart and convince you that you must come back… before you leave... There are many options for a Bourgogne wine tour: make sure you research ahead and book your visit in advance. You could even plan a short wine tour of the Burgundy region and visit Beaune and other famous appellations while you enjoy your stay in Paris. For the best and most comprehensive approach, try a bespoke Burgundy wine tour itinerary with the help of a local travel expert: they will ensure you get the wine holiday of a lifetime!

Sherrie Frame

I waited 50 years to travel to France. I imagined every detail to make my dream trip come true. I needed help in making the dream a reality.

From my first phone call to IntoThe Vineyard and meeting Morgan, to actually sitting in a vineyard in Provence sipping a chardonnay, they held my hand and planned each beautiful step. They listened to me and tailored exactly the trip I wanted. I chose to do it as a solo trip but never felt alone. The accommodations, drivers, and details all made for a flawless first-time international trip.

Madison Dreith and her team did an outstanding job of arranging a memorable visit to the Bordeaux region of France, as well as a one-day "foodie" tour of Paris. It was so easy to enjoy the trip when we had drivers who knew the area to take us to the different wineries. The restaurants selected for us to have our lunches were outstanding as well. Into the Vinyard allowed us to fully enjoy our time in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux Place de Palais

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour in Bordeaux. This tour was in August so we know it was a challenge. But their delivery was World Class. The service people lined up by Into the Vineyard were engaging, thoughtful and respectful. The two hotels, although small both in number of rooms and room size, were quaint. Their breakfasts and afternoon beverage arrangements were a nice touch. The specific wine tours had much more of an educational tone to them as compared with other wine tours we experienced previously. A unique aspect of the week was a side boat trip in Archachon. It was an interesting break from the wine tours and the boat captain was incredibly humorous. Recommend this tour and this tour company highly!

Ruinart Caves tight

Booked us an amazing trip to Champagne and Corsica. We were so impressed by the quality of the hotels they recommended and the guides they paired us up with. Not only did they arrange fantastic tours of well-known wineries but also small independent ones. Super professional and their attention to detail was great. Corsica was suggested to us and was everything we wanted and more!

Brad Jantz

We just had an amazing trip to France/Spain to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary. I want to thank Into the Vineyard as they picked wonderful spots for us to stay along with some amazing adventures.

Colin heard our desires and was able to point us in the right direction so that we could enjoy the experience without being constantly on the move. The part I really appreciated was that we wanted wine activities, primarily in Bordeaux, but had enough experience to plan non-wine day tours for us in the other cities, such as a Tapas tour and a cheese/barkery/chocolate tour.

What makes our tours special?

1. our guides are from the region and are experts in wine, food and culture.

Bruno and Isabelle Corneaux, true ambassadors of Burgundy, will accompany you on a journey through the heart and soul of the Pinot Noir frontier. Coming from the region, they both have access to exclusive winery visits courtesy of old friends; off-the-beaten-track dining spots known only to family; hotels in extraordinary locations; vibrant and colorful farmers markets; and of course, delicious local wines.

2. Excursions specially curated to give you a wide variety of experiences

Whether it’s a trek through the woods with a truffle-hunting dog; a tour of a cheese-making factory; a walk through various terroirs of the region; or a private picnic on the bluffs overlooking the Pommard valley from Bruno’s grandmother’s village, our excursions are designed to appeal to a wide range of people and interests and will introduce you to the life of Burgundy.

3. Access to hidden food and wine gems not available to most tourists

When dinner at a Michelin 3-Star restaurant is only one of many memorable culinary highlights, you know you’ve been spoiled. Indulge in truffle lunches, cheese demonstrations, picnics feasting on the treasures from local markets and so many more delectable moments, all adding up to an unforgettable trip.

4. Private encounters with prestigious winemakers and chefs

Bruno’s life of winemaking in the region means he has the contacts to provide unparalleled access to historic wine cellars and exclusive tasting events. A class in French cooking will help set your palate for further adventures in tasting, and conversations with the chefs will instill a dream that one day you’ll recreate these gourmet moments fro friends and family back home. Isabelle’s organization and preparedness allow ease in purchasing any of the wines to be sent home as well.

5. Ability to accommodate couples, friends, or solo travelers

Designed to be a group experience, these trips allow anyone to join and feel part of a group rather than a clique or a couple.

6. Small groups so no one gets lost in the crowd

Limiting the number of people on any one trip allows for better access to restaurants and wineries, as well as to boutique hotels. Two passenger vans will get you to places a larger bus could not. There are no long lines waiting to refill a wine glass or be served a meal. Perhaps most importantly, such a small group helps build friendships and connections that remain strong long after the trip.

7. Personalized and authentic experience

Whether you are traveling with your spouse, friends or solo, our small group vacations and tours are designed to provide you with a personalized and authentic experience!

8. Creating memories with every tour

We go out of our way to pay every guest special attention from before the tour even begins. You will have Isabelle or one of her hosts or guides with you at all times, helping you to experience the place we call home. We have no doubt that you’ll leave with fond memories and new friends!

– Isabelle Corneaux –

Isabelle is the Tour Director and is originally from Dijon, France. Along with Bruno, she is the owner of Domaine Divio winery as well as a Professor of French, a photographer, and a world traveler based out of the Willamette Valley since 2011. Isabelle is a polyglot. She speaks French, English and Spanish fluently. She is married to Bruno and is the mother of two handsome young men who speak four languages.

Isabelle developed a passion for travel at a very young age. She lived in Dublin, Ireland in her twenties, then French Polynesia in her thirties, then California, Washington State, and finally Oregon and Burgundy.

She loves going to live concerts, hosting dinners, organizing trips, road trips, and hiking in Southern Utah, Arizona, and Alaska, and above all sharing the joy of different cultures and wine!

– Bruno Corneaux –

Bruno, our host and wine specialist on the Burgundy Tours, is a native from the heart of wine country in Meloisey – a tiny village of the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, France. Being a 4th generation winemaker, he is very knowledgeable about the history of Burgundy. His passion is for wine, of course, but like every French native, such passion for wine does not go without gastronomy.

Bruno has worked in Burgundy, South Africa, California, Washington, and Oregon. He has also visited wine country in New Zealand. In 2012, he developed his own estate, Domaine Divio in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon. He also farms several vineyards and makes wine for other wineries in the valley.

Bruno has a passion for music and European comic books. He loves to spend time with his family on road trips across the USA: Alaska, Utah, Arizona, Colorado… you name it!

bruno

– Louis Corneaux –

Louis, the eldest son of Isabelle and Bruno Corneaux, has been immersed in the wine industry since he was a baby. Louis was born in Tahiti in 2000 and saw the first vineyard ever planted in the South Pacific develop on the atoll of Rangiroa. In 2002, the Corneaux family moved to the US, spent 9 years in Eastern Washington and then relocated to the beautiful Willamette Valley where they established Domaine Divio in 2012.

Louis began showing an interest in viticulture at the age of 17, working for Domaine Parigot in Bruno’s native French village. The following summers, he worked at Domaine Lafarge in Volnay, Domaine Méo-Camuzet in Vosne-Romanée and Domaine Pillot in Chassagne-Montrachet. Louis studied viticulture at OSU in Corvallis, OR and is currently completing a master’s degree in winemaking at IUVV, University of Burgundy in Dijon, France. With this, he follows in his father’s footsteps to complete a French National Diploma of Oenology. He is studying and conducting his apprenticeship at Domaine de la Romanée Conti.

Louis loves sharing his knowledge and passion about wine both from the new world and the old world. He also loves to travel, just like his parents!

– Laura Pedroni –

Laura Pedroni is originally from Bermuda and has lived in Italy, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Oregon. She is a Certified Yoga Instructor and Instructor Teacher. She has practiced yoga since the early 1990s, is the owner/founder of Yogis Studio in McMinnville, Oregon and has led local and international retreats, workshops, and classes for more than twenty years.

Laura loves to travel internationally, and is passionate about food and wine, hiking, kayaking and exploring the world. Laura is your yoga instructor on our Yoga and Wine Tours.

Testimonials

Marlene icenhower & greg schroff.

Our trip to France was a once in a lifetime experience! Isabelle and Bruno provided a unique perspective on the wine industry in Burgundy and gave us ‘insider’ access to wineries that seemed to pop out of the pages of a story book. From overnight stays at quirky, ancient hotels, to afternoons at a barrel factory to dinner at a Michelin rated restaurant, Isabelle planned every detail of our trip to perfection–all we had to do was show up and enjoy. The small group experience made us feel like we were travelling with friends. One of the most unique travel experiences we have had!

Charlene & Jeff Stalboerger

Our visit to Burgundy with Isabelle and Bruno was much more than a vacation or a trip. It was an unforgettable experience of a lifetime! The accommodations were incredible, and the variety of activities and winery visits were perfectly planned for us to truly explore and experience the finest of Burgundy! We look forward to the next tour with you!

Henry Wiens

The Corneaux’s are native Burgundians, Bruno from Beaune and Isabelle from Dijon, uniquely qualified for leading travelers through the French countryside. Bruno has been making high scoring wines in the Ribbon Ridge area of northwest Oregon for several years and is a master winemaker. Isabelle has an eye for beauty, photography, and trip planning. They delight in sharing some of the finest old French wineries, historical hotels, fromageries, coopers (barrel makers), and culinary delights – they have been known to find truffles and Michelin restaurants along their well-planned excursions.

Nellie & Allan

We attended the first tour to Burgundy and cannot speak more highly of Isabelle. The hotels, restaurants, activities, and of course, wine, were all spectacular. Her knowledge of the region allowed us to participate in the Summer Solstice celebration in Dijon, a fantastic picnic overlooking Pommard, and so much more. We could not have had a better experience.

Megan & Steve Thompson

My husband and I had never been drawn to the idea of taking an organized tour for our vacation. Our perception was it wouldn’t be as fun being with a group and that it would be too restrictive. Well, we discovered we were very wrong! In June 2019, we took a tour to Burgundy, France with Isabelle and Bruno Corneaux, the owners of Domaine Divio, and it was an amazing experience! Isabelle had everything figured out – in reality, all we needed to do was show up! They covered all the details you could imagine, exciting and comfortable lodging, exceptional meals and wine (including a Michelin restaurant) and supplied all our local transportation. The best part was having the opportunity to visit Dijon and Beaune with people who grew up there. We never would have had the insider knowledge about what wineries to go to, information about the local area and even a trip to a cooperage which we would never have had access to. It was the perfect blend of being with a group and also having time on our own to explore. We would give the trip five stars and would highly recommend joining one of Wine Detours!

Pamela & Steve Thun

For wine lovers or Francophiles, traveling with Isabelle & Bruno to Burgundy was a dream trip. It is a wine education, family vacation and European tour all in one package. The trip connects the Willamette Valley and Burgundy, with hosts possessing strong roots in both places. The food was wonderful, the wine was plentiful and always flowing, and new friendships were born. Pamela and I will always remember the trip as one of the best we have taken, and we cannot wait for the next adventure with Isabelle and Bruno.

Kathy & Ken Heininge

There are trips and then there are experiences that cannot be replicated. Traveling with Isabelle and Bruno provides you with opportunities that the average traveler will never get to encounter. Whether it is access to some of the premiere wineries in the world, including tastings led in person by the most prestigious winemakers, or whether it is a catered picnic on the butterfly-covered bluffs over Pommard, or whether it is a truffle hunt followed by a six-course truffle lunch, or whether it is staying in a 13th century abbey, this trip is sure to delight on every score. Because the groups are limited to a small number, you are able to get into select restaurants for meals you will dream about for years afterwards, and you will never struggle to squeeze your way to the front of a line to get your wine glass filled. Do not miss this chance!

We’d love to hear from you!

A Beginner’s Guide to Wine Tasting in Burgundy, France

Chambertin, Romanée-Conti, Clos de Vougeot, Montrachet, Corton and Musigny. The wines of Bourgogne, or Burgundy, as we’ve long called it in English, inspire a magical response from wine lovers—eyes glaze over while a faraway smile tilts their lips when they hear these hallowed names. Why does this timeless historic region in eastern France prompt such immense aspiration and fealty, especially as the wines continue to rise in price at a meteoric pace? For enthusiasts, Burgundy epitomizes the pinnacle of authentic, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay capable of flavors, complexity and age-ability found nowhere else in the world. Fortunately, the best way to understand Bourgogne is also the most delicious – by visiting Burgundy, France.

Pinot noir made by wine collector who discovers ideal soil for greatness.

Mt. Pajaro vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains at sunset

There is nothing as thrilling as seeing some of the most famous Pinot Noir vineyards in the world right after being lucky enough to taste the heavenly wines made from these Grand Cru Burgundy vineyards. The most outstanding Pinot Noir wines in the world have ethereal aromatics that transport the drinker to another realm and in the best vintages, the flavors and textures on the palate are just as exquisite as the nose. No other wine on the planet can compare to these wines, and hence, why Burgundy wine collectors are a breed of their own, who have such an intense obsession with trying to relive another experience of tasting an otherworldly bottle. Their obsession is so strong that they are willing to get their hearts broken multiple times - just like when Pinot Noir is great, it is in a league of its own but when it is bad, the only thing that one can do is dump it down the drain. Since the weather can be drastically inconsistent in Burgundy and even range greatly among the microclimates of various areas, single-vineyard bottlings can be dramatically different depending on the vintage.

Kevin Harvey in the vineyards

One man had a mission to find those different expressions of “minerality, tension and complexity” that he loved about Burgundy Pinot Noir wines and remarkably, he found them in a more consistent climate that would always be ideal for Pinot Noir year in and year out. That man is Kevin Harvey - born in California, raised in Houston, Texas and found his way back to California as a software entrepreneur who sold his first upstart company in the late 1980s. Since it was for a relatively small amount of money, as software was not the big business then that it is today, he thought about moving back to Houston as even back then, the cost of living in San Francisco was extraordinarily high. But fate had him meet his future wife who was California through and through, and so, he formed roots in California, pursuing other software ventures as well as delving into his passion for Burgundy wine.

Mt. Pajaro Vineyard in Santa Cruz Mountains

Kevin was never personally impressed with the richer, more plush California Pinot Noir wines that were fashionable when he first got serious about collecting wine, so he kept going back to the outstanding vineyards of Burgundy, spending lots of time with wine producers (who had become friends) explaining what was so special about the top Grand Cru vineyards of their illustrious region: what they call “terroir.” Then, his passion for these stellar wines had him delve into the research of soil depth, composition, structure, chemistry, hydrology and climate, to name a few.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Eventually, he planted a vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains , which, to his surprise, seemed like the ideal soil for great Pinot Noir.

Santa Cruz Mountains

It is not easy to impress a Burgundy wine collector as they are some of the most loyal wine drinkers on the planet and no other place can compare. Yet Kevin was intrigued by his research and he knew that it would take years of making one barrel of wine from his planted vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, California, to see if it was even close. He knew that making this wine in his garage with no background as a winemaker or vineyard grower would not show the site’s full potential and he would be lucky if the wine was even drinkable but it was good and improved over time; he couldn’t believe it. As someone already mindful that living in California was costing him a great deal of money, he was certainly in no hurry to spend significantly more by starting a winery.

The vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains that are owned by Rhys Vineyards are only around 12 miles ... [+] away from the ocean

Yet he discovered that much of the land where he could plant vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains has around 20 inches of clay soil with fractured rock such as decomposing limestone, with a high cation exchange capacity, allowing nutrients to become available to the vines. These plots were similar to the soils in the Grand Cru sites in Burgundy, where Kevin found the most complex and interesting wines. And since he loved the different expressions of various excellent sites in Burgundy, he was also intrigued by the idea that two vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains, which were only 400 yards away from each other, could be remarkably different because there have been millions of years of movement between the Pacific Plate, the North American Plate and the Farallon Plate in the area. Hence, the soil is like a layer cake with tens of millions of years of difference between those layers. For example, one vineyard could be on the part of the layer one million years old while another was formed 30 million years ago.

The idea that Kevin could have discovered a place that had the ideal soils, the ability to express a wide range of terroir of “various geologies of the soil,” and an ideal cool mountain climate was too tempting not to take the leap. In 2004, he founded Rhys Vineyards , and by 2007, he had five different Santa Cruz Mountains vineyards in production; today, he has six. During his early Burgundy collecting days, he could have never imagined that not only could he find a place in California that would have the same level of “minerality, tension and complexity” as his beloved Burgundy wines but these vineyards would be able to produce that high level of quality year in and year out, as there were none of the extreme spikes in vintage variation that unfortunately plagues Burgundy.

The True Test

A redwood tree in the Mt. Pajaro vineyard with the fog rolling in

Almost 30 years after he planted his first plot of land in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the mission that drove him all these years has been finally ascertained as he wanted his vineyards to get to an age where they would be in their prime, and therefore, he could finally see if they were capable of having multifaceted varied nuances from site to site. Also, it took time to learn how to manage his vineyards, which are 100% organic today, and he dry farms four of his oldest sites and is currently in the process of converting the others.

After spending all those years standing in the middle of the prestigious vineyards of Burgundy, noting how plots near each other could make wines with entirely different expressions of excellence, he is finally experiencing that for himself with his own vineyards in the much lesser-known area of the Santa Cruz Mountains. A place that will never have that many vineyards with only 1,500 acres planted, compared to Sonoma’s almost 63,000 acres, due to much of the Santa Cruz Mountains being protected by open space trusts and, according to Kevin, one cannot “farm economically” there since it is a patchwork of tiny plots, not making it appealing for big wineries to come in as they can’t have a contiguous 100-acre vineyard.

It is often impossible to see where life is heading as Kevin could have ended up back in Houston after selling his company for a relatively small amount in the ’80s, living an easier life with a lower cost of living. He would have had much more time and money to spend in Burgundy and build an impressive collection. Yet, love for his wife kept him in California and led him to the seemingly impossible: discovering an excellent situation in which he could make the wines he cherished yet with terroir expressions of their own. It hasn’t happened overnight and he didn’t know if the day would ever come, but it is here, and he is far from easing up on his mission as he is ready to take it to the next level.

Bearwallow Vineyard in Anderson Valley, California

Rhys Vineyards has also acquired a vineyard in Anderson Valley, California, a place prized for its cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to make vibrant still wines and top sparkling wines on par with Champagne. Unlike the vineyards he purchased in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this plot of land already came with six acres of Pinot Noir already planted but he planted an additional 25 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. His vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains have been planted with carefully selected clones of the grapes, as that was another facet of top-quality wine he learned from Burgundy producers. Then, he used a field selection from his vineyards in the Santa Cru Mountains to plant the rest of the Anderson Valley plot.

2021 Rhys Vineyards, Chardonnay, Anderson Valley AVA, California: 100% Chardonnay from the single vineyard Bearwallow, so even though it is listed as a regional wine, it is actually a single vineyard. Pretty floral notes with a wonderful mineral streak with lemon curd and peach cobbler flavors and a tangy acidity.

2021 Rhys Vineyards, Bearwallow Vineyard, Chardonnay, Anderson Valley AVA, California: 100% Chardonnay from the top grapes coming from Bearwallow vineyard. Bright lemon zest on the nose with a fierce stony minerality that has lots of drive and focus on the extremely long finish, leaving notes of sea spray and broken slate in one’s head.

2021 Rhys Vineyards, Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, California: 100% Chardonnay coming from three of the Rhys vineyards in Santa Cruz Mountains. More fleshy stone fruit flavors that are beautifully balanced by the electric acidity with hints of baking spices that has a wonderful expression of purity of fruit that is wrapped up in an overall elegance.

2021 Rhys Vineyards, Mt. Pajaro Vineyard, Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, California: 100% Chardonnay from Mt. Pajaro vineyard. A stunning Chardonnay that gives an exquisite expression of the exotic yet refined structural quality of a white orchard with aromas of citrus blossom, green mango and passion fruit with lots of tension and verve.

2021 Rhys Vineyards, Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley AVA, California: 100% Pinot Noir from the single vineyard Bearwallow, so even though it is listed as a regional wine it is actually a single vineyard. Effusive bouquet of aromas emanate from the glass with lilacs, shaved nutmeg and fresh morels with bright rhubarb flavors wrapped in very fine tannins.

2021 Rhys Vineyards, Bearwallow Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Anderson AVA, California: 100% Pinot Noir from the top grapes coming from Bearwallow vineyard. Deep, multilayered wine with tree bark and forest floor that has rich flavors of black cherry and more substantial tannins and an alluring silky texture.

2021 Rhys Vineyards, Mt. Pajaro Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Santa Cruz Mountains

2021 Rhys Vineyards, Pinot Noir, Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, California: 100% Pinot Noir from six of the Rhys vineyards in Santa Cruz Mountains. An aristocratic wine that still has lots of generosity with layers of juicy red and black fruit with deliciously delectable notes of cocoa powder and candied wild violets yet it has an addictive savory quality that is brought over the top by the finely etched tannins.

2021 Rhys Vineyards, Mt. Pajaro Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, California: 100% Pinot Noir from Mt. Pajaro vineyard. A wine that leaves one speechless as it has an incredible depth of concentration with a mid-palate filled with brambly fruit that is multi-dimensional with sage, anise seeds, crushed limestone and smoldering earth dancing about in one’s head with an extraordinarily long, expressive finish that is lifted by marked acidity.

Best Oregon Pinot Noir

There is twice as much Pinot Noir as all other grapes combined planted in the state of Oregon. The Willamette Valley leads the charge with over 21,000 acres of vines, confirming it as one of the best areas in the United States to produce this finicky varietal. Burgundian wine families have been putting down roots here for decades, to the point that the valley has been dubbed the Burgundy of the Pacific Northwest. While the flavor profile of Pinot Noir grown in Oregon differs from Burgundy, there are many winemakers who try to emulate the style of the old country and a large percentage do so successfully. More than 80 percent of the Pinot Noir produced in Oregon is made from grapes grown in the Willamette Valley, which is home to over 700 wineries that benefit from a combination of sedimentary and volcanic soils.

On the east side of the state, the Cascade Mountains provide a barrier to the arid, dry climate of eastern Oregon while the Coast Range on the west shelters Willamette River vineyards from frigid Pacific air and pelting rain. The summers are moderate with cool nights that allow for concentration of sugars in the grapes and cooler, sunny autumns provide the perfect weather for harvesting grapes with vivid acidity and complex flavors.

Finding great wine doesn’t need to cost a great deal. There’s a lot to love about a special occasion bottle of wine, like the First Growth Bordeaux you were gifted for your wedding, or the bottle of Champagne whose vintage is your birth year. But everyday wine, those easy-breezy bottles that you pop at a dinner party or after a long day of work, are the wines that should matter most.

It’s often wine from the most well-known regions like Napa , Burgundy , and Tuscany , that are the most tempting. These regions have recognizable appellations, brands, or familiar bottle art, but often carry a big price tag. To find the best wine deals right now (the kind of bottles you’ll want to order by the case to always have on hand) we turned to the folks who know more about buying wine than anyone else: our favorite retailers. Here are sixteen stellar wines from all over the world for $20 or less.

The easy screw cap closure on this wine tells you a lot about what's going on inside the bottle: drink me now. It features lush red fruit like raspberry and cherry with a backbone of savory cedar. A touch of Merlot in the blend (only 6%) adds dark, rounded fruit notes evoking dark chocolate, cassis, and even coffee. Its delicious fruit flavors are concentrated yet easy going — a fabulous barbecue wine.

Experts say: “Paso Robles fruit offers all of the warmth you want from a classic California Cabernet at a fraction of the price you pay for Napa Cabs these days,” says David Weitzenhoffer of Community Wine & Spirits in New York City. “There’s a touch of oak in this wine, but it’s subtle and not overbearing.

Rob Griffin is the longest tenured winemaker in Washington State. Rob and his wife Deborah Barnard founded the winery over 40 years ago and make some of the best values in the region. Rob’s Red Blend has dark berry flavors and a touch of chocolate and coffee; the rich flavors of the 2021 vintage were in part thanks to an early spring and very, very hot summer in which black fruit ripened fast.

Experts say: “This appealingly jammy red blend has just enough acidity to keep the fruit in check, proving that Washington state red blends can be both delicious and well balanced while also offering serious bang for your buck,” says Weitzenhoffer, who grew up in Washington state.

This sparkling wine may be your new best friend when purchasing by the case. An easy-going sparkler with classic Prosecco aromas like golden apples and white flowers, this bottling is stellar on its own but also plays well in cocktails from a simple Mimosa to an Aperol Spritz. It’s made from 100% Glera grapes grown on coastal hillside vineyards whose cool coastal winds help preserve the grapes’ acidity.

Experts say: “This Prosecco punches far above its price point with undeniable quality and elegance,” say TJ and Hadley Douglas, the husband-and-wife team behind The Urban Grape , a warm and inviting wine shop with locations in Boston and Washington, D.C.. “At the shop, this is our go-to bottle to pour at parties and include with gifts. We recommend it over and over again to anyone who will listen, it’s truly remarkable for the price."

Located right on the heel of Italy’s boot, Salento is a region within Puglia known for its hot, dry climate and rich red grapes. While Salento is famous for its wines made from the  Negroamaro grape, Masseria’s Orion bottling shows why Primitivo from Puglia shouldn’t be ignored. There’s plenty of red plum and blackberries with a touch of pink pepper to brighten everything up.

Experts say: “Primitivo, also known as Zinfandel, takes on a spicy, structured profile when grown on the limestone cliffs of Puglia in Southern Italy,” says Simi Grewal, owner of DECANTsf an all-in-one bottle shop, wine bar, and educational tasting room in San Francisco. “Their Orion bottling carries the juicy charm of Californian Zinfandel, with the spiciness of a southern Rhône Grenache and the body of a French Cabernet Sauvignon.”

A glowing red hue in the glass, this Rhône blend is warm and inviting. Made from grapes grown in chalky soils, this wine benefits from the Rhône’s hot summers coupled with its sloped landscape to fully ripen fruit-forward Grenache and Carignan without being overly jammy. For a more structured, ageworthy red, try Domaine Grand Bellane’s Valréas bottling which is a 50-50 blend of Grenache and Syrah.

Experts say: “Exactly what you want from the Côtes du Rhône, this is a versatile and crowd-pleasing red from a fifth-generation family of organic vintners,” says Weizenhoffer. “A high proportion of Syrah in the blend adds the right peppery note to balance out the ripe fruit.”

A benchmark of the Montepulciano grape and the Abruzzo region, this wine has notes of red raspberries, cherries with a pleasing touch of smoke. Masciarelli ferments and ages their wines in stainless steel, helping protect fresh fruit flavors and aromas.

Experts say: “Masciarelli is a family estate that totally over delivers in this category,” says Weitzenhoffer. “Their entry-level Montepulciano works with all of the classic red-sauce pairings from pizza to puttanesca, but offers layers of tannin and complexity not typical at this price point.”

2021 Folk Machine Parts & Labor Red Blend ($20)

This Grenache-dominant red blend is best enjoyed with a slight chill. The wine is one of California’s best values — it’s well made and the grapes are carefully chosen, resulting in a wine that’s juicy yet complex and savory, that even features Carignane from 100+ year-old vines.

Experts say: “Red blends are king when they taste this good,” says Douglas. “A blend of organically grown Carignane, Syrah, Grenache, and Barbera, this medium bodied wine from winemaker Kenny Likitprakong hits on all cylinders. Grapes for this wine are grown organically and the wine is made with minimal intervention as well.”

Since this wine sees both aging in French oak and goes through malolactic fermentation, which yields a creamy texture, winemakers Chris Brockway and Tim Elenteny pick grapes early in order to retain high levels of refreshing acidity. Expect green apple, lime zest, and mango.

Experts say: “A breath of fresh air for California Chardonnay, this wine is crisp and zingy for the racy white wine lovers but familiar enough for a white Burgundy drinker,” says Brandon Loper of Golden Age Wine , a Birmingham, Alabama-based shop that focuses on natural and low-intervention wines. “It’s not your typical California Chardonnay, and the price point is excellent to keep a few in the fridge.”

Made from 100% Cabernet Franc in Chinon, one of the Loire Valley’s primer regions for red wine, this medium-bodied red has balanced fruity and savory flavors. Thanks to its medium tannins, the #Ono could be served with a slight chill — pair its warming spiced notes with anything featuring spices, from eggplant salad to lamb meatballs.

Experts say: “From the trusted team at Domaine de la Commanderie comes this delicious and palate-friendly Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley,” says Douglas “This is a pop and pour wine that will please a whole table but won’t break the bank — which is good because you’ll definitely need more than one bottle.”

This medium-bodied Rhone blend features the region’s classic red grapes: Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. It's delicious when enjoyed young, showing off red and black fruit flavors with a peppery finish, but with a bit of age (drink it within five years) the earth and baking spices really come through.

Experts say: “[This is] made in one of the few natural wine co-ops, just twenty minutes from Châteauneuf-du-Pape,” says Loper. “Since it's produced by a co-op, you may see several labels with the same name. They will all be great, but this is a recent discovery for us, and we find it to be the perfect hamburger wine.”

Fans of classic Loire Chenin Blanc, this is the wine for you. Made from 100% Chenin, Mary Taylor’s Anjou Blanc features classic orchard fruit aromas of golden apples and green pear with bright acidity and minerality — it’s complexity could warrant double the price.

Experts say: “Mary Taylor is a négociant who seeks out small producers who wouldn’t otherwise have the means to export their wines to the U.S.,” says Grewal. “Her white wines, like this Chenin Blanc from a fourth-generation winemaker in the Loire Valley village of Saint-Jean-de-Mauvrets, are smashing, with crystalline acidity and deep complexity from regions that you might not normally venture to.”

With notes of both lemons and golden apples, this South African Sauvignon Blanc leans stylistically toward Sancerre more than New Zealand. It’s zippy and bright without being overly acidic or green. The grapes are grown on ancient sandstone which could be responsible for the wine’s lovely mineral quality.

Experts say: “There is a world of high-quality wines at value prices coming out of South Africa, but no one is doing it better than sommelier-turned-winemaker Tinashe Nyamudoka,” says Douglas. “While he’s a genius with South Africa’s better known white grape, Chenin Blanc, don’t miss this vibrant, tropical-fruited Sauvignon Blanc grown biodynamically along the Breede River in the Western Cape.”

Fresh and fragrant, this Chardonnay has notes of lemon blossom and stone fruit like ripe white peach. Since the wine sees no oak and doesn’t go through malolactic fermentation, it’s light and crisp, pairing fabulously with a bright summer salad but with enough texture and body to stand up to a rotisserie chicken.

Experts say: “This dressed-down, zippy Chardonnay is helping to change the conversation about what ‘California Chard’ is,” says Grewal. “Laely Heron focuses on sustainably produced wines that reflect the purity of the grape variety. Heron makes varietal-driven wines, not blends, that are simply fermented to maintain the grapes’ characteristic flavors. She works with growers throughout California, and labels her sines simply as California, not a smaller appellation, which allows her to source from the best vineyards and maintain high quality while keeping costs down.”

Since most of winemaker’s Walter Massa’s work happens in the vineyards, it’s no surprise that one of his premier wines is called terra, meaning land in Italian. He lets the fruit lead the way when it comes to making this 100% Barbera . The grapes macerate on the skins before going through a long, slow fermentation with native yeasts with gentle lees stirring and battonage, resulting in a vibrant, fruity Barbera with a touch of spice and dried herbs.

Experts say: “This Barbera is one of the best values in the natural-wine world,” says Loper. “It’s fresh and juicy with an Italian rusticity that will elevate any dinner you pair with. It’s especially perfect for red-sauce pasta dishes and pizza.”

2022 Filipa Pato & William Wouters Dinamica D.N.M.C. Branco ($20)

Made in Bairrada, a region along Portugal’s coastline, this smooth and refreshing white wine is made to pair with food from raw seafood to creamy shrimp cooked with lots of butter. Made from whole grape bunches that get pressed and fermented in stainless steel, 10% of the wine is aged in large French oak pipas , 500L barrels typically used in Portugal, which adds some richness and texture to the final blend.

Experts say: “There are so many great wines coming out of Portugal that are priced incredibly well,” says Grewal. “This bottling is a blend of Arinto and Bical, two indigenous Portuguese varieties that pack a zesty and minerally punch while still being generous on the palate. It has a creamy texture with a salty finish and bright grassy notes, like sweet tarragon and white tea.”

Quinta de Santiago is family-owned and has been making wine since 1899. Their Vinho Verde, which features a 50-50 blend of the region’s classic grapes, Loureiro and Arinto, has quenching citrus notes of green apple and lime, coupled with steely minerality. It’s zippy, tart quality is something we often describe as “fizzy acidity,” where acid creates an almost effervescent feel on the palate.

Experts say: “If you’re looking for a versatile bottle of white wine, then look no further,” says Loper. “I recently shared this with my family paired with some steelhead trout, sweet potatoes, and salad, and it worked well with everything on the plate.”
