Cruises are the perfect way to unwind with family or solo, and it is definitely a form of luxury that does not go unnoticed. Even if everyone has a different definition of luxury , it is undeniable that some of these cruise ships are the epitome of it.

Unlimited drinks, caviar and even helicopter transfers are a must for the most expensive cruises in the world. Each guest can enjoy unparalleled experiences while surrounded by grand architecture and details. Whether one is looking for a relaxing day poolside, or an adventurous excursion organised by the staff, these cruises have it all.

These experiences are the peak of luxury and, most importantly, they are a one-of-a-kind holiday. Cruise lines have been trying to enrich their offerings with unique and creative events, of which you’ll find by the boatload here.

Here are five of the most expensive cruise holidays , according to Elite Traveler.

Seven Seas Explorer

Seven Seas Explorer - Regent Cruises on North Sea Channel, towards North Sea

Priced at approximately $1.3m, when this itinerary ran in 2019, it took the title of the world’s most expensive cruise. However, it was a unique opportunity as the journey has only run once. Featuring three cruises in one, which were on board one of the most luxurious ships, the Seven Seas Explorer , the journey comprised 41 ports across 11 countries, over the span of 123 days – averaging at around $9,398 a day.

The trip also included five luxurious hotel stays in cities like Sydney, Tokyo and Hong Kong, as well as five private tours in the same cities. Private transfers were up for grabs too, via helicopter, private jet and sports cars.

One Seven Seas Splendor cruise sailed in May 2022, starting a 15-night cruise from Monte Carlo to London, stopping at ports in Spain and France. Its Veranda Suite starts at $12,842 per person.

On the other hand, a Seven Seas Suite starts at $23,593, reaching $70,539 per person for the most luxurious suite: the Regent Suite. This particular suite spreads over 4,000 ft, with three walk-in closets, a private balcony with a mini pool and a private spa.

These two Silversea cruises offer a port-to-port all-inclusive package including food, drinks, shore excursions and butler service, as well as door-to-door packages that offer the same amenities plus flights and transfer to and from the airport.

The Silver Explorer sails in June 2023 for a 10-day journey in Australia, with Breath-taking Nature as a motto.

Its Adventurer Suite starts at $10,635 per person with the door-to-door package, and the Owner’s Suite starts at $24,970 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises will sail what may well be the most expensive commercial cruise ever in 2027: an around-the-world trip with prices ranging from just under $100,000 to almost $1 million per person.

Sound over the top? Yes, for most travelers. But the luxury line expects the cruise will break company sales records, just as many of its past world cruises have, often selling out the day bookings opened.

“People are more eager than ever to embark on once-in-a-lifetime luxury travel experiences,” said Andrea DeMarco, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “In fact, over the past few years, we’ve received continued interest and increasing demand for our world cruises as discerning travelers want to venture further and for longer durations. Now more than ever, people do not want to wait for opportunities to pass them by.”

Indeed, weeks- and even months-long world cruises have become a popular travel style in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the luxury and upscale cruise markets.

To meet the growing demand, Regent’s 2027 world cruise will be the first aboard one of the company’s largest and newest explorer class ships, the 746-passenger Seven Seas Splendor , which launched in 2020. The ship has 373 suites across 15 categories, ranging from the 307-square-foot Veranda Suite to its lavish, one-of-a-kind 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite.

Perched on the 14th deck, the Regent Suite has unobstructed 270-degree views over the ship’s bow from a 1,300-square-foot wraparound veranda. A glass-enclosed solarium offers a view that mirrors that of the captain’s from the bridge. The over-the-top accommodation also has its own spa retreat complete with a personal sauna, steam room, and Jacuzzi, as well as original Picasso artworks adorning the walls, a custom Steinway Grand Maroque Piano by Dakota Jackson, and a handcrafted Hästens Vividus mattress, which retails for more than $200,000, topped with the finest bed linens and pillow styles.

The bed in the Regent Suite of the Seven Seas Splendor features a handcrafted Hästens Vividus mattress, which retails for more than $200,000.

Regent Suite guests will also have a dedicated butler, a full bar, and a personal car and driver in every port.

Fares for the 140-night voyage, which departs on January 11, 2027, start at $91,499 per guest for a Veranda Suite and go up to $839,999 per guest for the opulent Regent Suite. Travelers who prefer a slightly shorter journey can sail a 126-night Miami-to-Rome voyage, with fares ranging from $84,999 per guest up to $755,999 per guest.

So, what exactly does one get for those prices?

Fares for the World of Splendor sailing include first-class round-trip flights, door-to-door luggage service, 486 shore excursions, specialty dining, wine and spirits, unlimited Wi-Fi, and unlimited laundry and dry cleaning.

Where will the ship go?

For this 140-day world cruise, the Seven Seas Splendor will sail from Miami to New York, visiting 71 ports of call (including 14 overnight stays) in the Caribbean, South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Guests will travel 35,668 nautical miles across 3 oceans, exploring 40 countries on 6 continents.

Over more than four months, passengers will have the opportunity to celebrate Carnival in Panama City, visit a Sri Lankan street festival in Colombo, and step back in time during an exclusive Roaring ’20s–themed event in Málaga, Spain, that will feature haute couture and vintage automobile displays. The itinerary includes visits to 73 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among them Kakadu National Park in Australia, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Elephanta Caves in India, and Palmeral of Elche near Alicante, Spain.

There are nine dining venues on board the Seven Seas Splendor , including alfresco eating areas, in addition to wellness options, cooking classes, and entertainment.

What’s there to do on board?

The ship has a full spa and wellness center with included classes and activities led by fitness and mindful living experts. There’s a culinary arts kitchen for hands-on cooking lessons, evening entertainment, and nine dining venues, ranging from Compass Rose, offering a customized menu each night of the cruise, to Pan-Asian outpost Pacific Rim and the elevated steakhouse Prime 7. There’s also a French bistro called Chartreuse, and Sette Mari at La Veranda serves Italian fare with stunning ocean views.

Under parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Regent Seven Seas is part of the company’s larger Sail and Sustain program , which invests in ways to reduce emissions and the environmental impact of the fleet through investments in new and evolving green technologies. It also encompasses Regent’s Eco-Connect Tours , on which passengers can engage with local communities that are promoting sustainable tourism initiatives like biodynamic and organic wine production in Bordeaux, France, and visiting a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica.

I’m just back from one of the world’s most expensive cruise ships – here’s a sneak peek

Ashley Kosciolek

TPG's Ashley Kosciolek accepted a free trip from Regent Seven Seas Cruises to attend the unveiling of Seven Seas Grandeur. The opinions expressed below are entirely hers and weren't subject to review by the line.

What do you get when you mix superb design with loads of marble and glimmering lights, combine it with free drinks, tips, Wi-Fi and shore excursions, and, for good measure, toss in a suite that costs $11,000 per night?

The result is Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' brand-new Seven Seas Grandeur, which is one of the most expensive cruise ships afloat. It cost the cruise line more than $517 million, including $9 million for the 1,600-piece art collection, which features a custom-designed Faberge egg.

Put on your best dress or your finest suit or tux, and make an entrance at dinner by walking down the atrium's grand staircase. Sign up for a cooking class at the onboard culinary kitchen, where you'll spend two hours sipping wine as a chef shows you how to make several delectable dishes. Or enjoy evening cocktails and live piano music in the stunning top-deck Observation Lounge.

In true Regent fashion, the line has managed to create a glamorous atmosphere that will make any of its 746 passengers feel like they're the most important person on Earth. It does an excellent job of catering to its target market — mature adults who are educated and well traveled — in an atmosphere where relaxation is key and shipboard life is best enjoyed slowly.

Here's what I loved about this sparkling new ship — and what I didn't.

5 things I loved

world's.most expensive cruise ship

Talk about feeling spoiled. Although I didn't have a butler on my sailing, my 332-square-foot Concierge Suite — which included a 132-square-foot balcony — was so well appointed it felt like the type of cabin that would come with a personal attendant on other cruise lines.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

In addition to separate sleeping and lounging areas (which can be separated by a curtain), I had a walk-in closet and a marble bathroom that felt at least twice the size of bathrooms on standard cruise ships.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

But don't be fooled: This type of accommodation is squarely in the middle on Seven Seas Grandeur. There are six cabin categories below it and eight above, meaning that lavish digs are pretty much standard when you sail on this ship.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

I absolutely loved touches like the closet's sliding door, which glides into the wall instead of awkwardly opening out into the room; the plentiful outlets (both 110-volt North American and 220-volt European) and USB ports, with plenty near the vanity and on both sides of the bed; and the modern cabin controls, which allow passengers to change the temperature and indicate whether they need cabin service or wish to be left undisturbed.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The main thing that sets Seven Seas Grandeur apart from its sister ships , Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Explorer, is its design. This newest ship in the Explorer Class was wholly put together by Studio Dado, the renowned Miami-based design firm responsible for only certain aspects of previous vessels. It brightened up many public areas to make them feel airy and spacious, reworked the alternative restaurants and ensured the spaces flow well into one another.

The atrium area sparkles with a sweeping staircase, marble floors and an overhead chandelier designed to resemble a tangle of diamond tennis bracelets.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The Compass Rose restaurant, the ship's main dining room, felt like what you'd get if architect and designer Antoni Gaudí were born in the time of "The Jetsons." The decor melds bright whites with pops of gray and cranberry, and tables are set among crystal-inlaid pillars reminiscent of trees. It's glitzy without ever being tacky. (Just look at the Versace dinnerware on the tables.)

Never in all my sailings have I seen such a grand MDR.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

As for the other eateries, each has its own tastefully lavish vibe. While Italian restaurant Sette Mari at La Veranda remains fairly neutral as part of the buffet area, the vessel's other three specialty venues stand out in a big way. Asian restaurant Pacific Rim on Deck 5 feels like an elite New York City supper club with an Asian twist, complete with dark walls and earth-toned furnishings. A breathtaking sculpture of a tree, populated with hundreds of pink glass cherry blossoms, greets passengers at the entrance.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The Prime 7 steakhouse and French restaurant Chartreuse are located across from one another on Deck 10. Both entryways are bedecked in leather accents that balance masculine and feminine aesthetics. Prime 7's entrance features a brown leather patchwork with handles that make the pieces look like suitcases or steamer trunks. Chartreuse's entryway is outfitted with large black leather 3D flowers designed by Chanel.

Inside, Prime 7 matches what it serves with bright red chairs surrounded by brown tones. Chartreuse's interior design is also fairly literal, with blacks and grays punctuated by pops of chartreuse-colored glass and glittering overhead light fixtures in the same hue.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

Additionally, a carefully curated art collection of 1,600 pieces is spread throughout the ship, complete with a virtual tour that's offered via the Regent mobile app. The collection is anchored by a custom-designed Faberge egg that's displayed in a case at the center of the guest services area.

It's clear that an immeasurable amount of attention was given to every design choice, from colors to artwork to furniture.

The Pool Grill

world's.most expensive cruise ship

When I sidled up to the Pool Grill on the final day of my sailing and ordered a burger, I was not expecting it to be my favorite meal on the ship, but it was. Call it one of the most pleasant surprises on my voyage.

In addition to the truffle beef burger with caramelized onions and truffle aioli, I also asked for a side of sweet potato fries, an order of tomato bruschetta and a caprese panini, figuring I'd try a bit of each. Fortunately for my stomach, but unfortunately for my waistline, each was so phenomenal that I ate every bite.

The quality of the poolside food is worth writing home about because it's as good as or better than the food you'd find in the main dining rooms on most other cruise lines' ships. Yes, the fare in Seven Seas Grandeur's main dining room and alternative restaurants is also fantastic, but you would expect those meals to be standouts. Yet it's clear that the ship's culinary team puts effort into every meal on board, even the most casual.

The quiet places

world's.most expensive cruise ship

As someone who's always looking for a chance to escape the frenetic pace of life ashore, I cannot stress enough how much I appreciated a couple of onboard quiet spaces that afforded me a place to read that wasn't my cabin.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

I found the stunning Observation Lounge on Deck 11 to be fairly quiet during the daytime, especially on port days. It was easy to snag a table by one of the sweeping windows so I could enjoy the view. The space also serves as a venue for daily trivia and a place to catch live piano music in the evening.

Libraries are being phased out on most mainstream cruise ships, but I was pleased to learn that there's one on Deck 11 of Seven Seas Grandeur. It's a dark, cozy space with wall-to-wall books, tables for perusing coffee-table titles, comfy seating and even a couple of alcoves for people who need to focus.

The Culinary Arts Kitchen

world's.most expensive cruise ship

I'm a firm believer that the true mark of something's quality is whether it's capable of winning over a skeptic.

I despise cooking. Between shopping for ingredients, prepping everything, doing the actual cooking and then washing all the dishes afterward, I find it frustrating, time-consuming and more hassle than it's worth.

However, I tried one of Regent's famed Culinary Arts Kitchen cooking classes with one of the ship's onboard chefs, and I had a blast. (I suspect part of the reason is because everything was prepped and waiting for me when I got there, so all I had to do was toss it in a pan and then eat it.)

The chef was friendly and funny, and she took the time to explain some of the history and techniques behind each dish we cooked.

What I experienced was an abridged version that lasted only an hour, during which time we made spaghetti in lemon sauce, followed by crepes with blueberries and ice cream. Normally, the classes — which start at $89 per person — last about two hours and feature several dishes. Spaces are limited, so book early.

3 things I didn't care for

The entertainment.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The show I saw — "Marauder's Ball," the only one of the ship's four production shows offered during the christening voyage — featured pirates pillaging jewelry and other riches from the wealthy elite as they attended the launch of a new ship.

Overall, it felt too busy with props like ropes and flags that distracted from the main action, and the show felt too long for how loose the plot was. Further, it's strange to me that the single show time each night is 9:30 p.m., which is late, given that most shows run for a full hour.

All of that said, the singers and dancers were phenomenal, and it's clear Regent sunk a lot of time, money and creativity into the costumes and sets. However, the end result just didn't stack up when compared with entertainment on bigger cruise ships.

The room service

world's.most expensive cruise ship

You know a ship is great when most of what you're putting under the "did not like" column is little stuff. That's the case here.

Complimentary room service is just another perk of an upscale, inclusive cruise ship. Regent provides room service breakfast cards that you fill out and hang outside your door at night for delivery the following morning. On the second night of the sailing, I hung my order — a cheese omelet with a side of extra-crispy bacon and coffee — and went to bed.

The next morning, someone from the room service department called to let me know my order was on the way and to apologize that it was coming 15 minutes early — something I didn't mind at all.

My food arrived, and the person who delivered it kindly set everything up for me, including a white tablecloth. The plating was great, and I was so excited to dig in — until I cut into my omelet and discovered it wasn't the cheese omelet I had ordered, but a ham-and-cheese omelet. Since I don't eat ham, I called room service to politely request a replacement.

I was impressed with how quickly the replacement omelet arrived, but when I cut into it, it was undercooked and inedible. When the egg ran out onto the plate, I gave up and went to the onboard cafe for an incredibly stale bagel instead.

Overall, the service was wonderful, but the in-cabin dining experience needs a bit more work.

Crowded public spaces

world's.most expensive cruise ship

Although most of the ship's public areas seemed like they would be the correct size in proportion to the size of the vessel, I found that a couple had insufficient space.

On more than one occasion, I ventured to Coffee Connection, the onboard cafe, for a cuppa (try the gingerbread cappuccino), and every table was full. The space is at capacity for seating, so it's not possible to add more. But it's clear the cafe is more popular than its seating area can handle.

The same is true of the adjacent Meridian Lounge, which regularly hosts cocktail hours and afternoon tea. The cocktail event I attended quickly became overcrowded, and it was standing room only. I also tried to check out afternoon tea, but I couldn't find an available table, so I left. (That was disappointing, as I was told tea was a highlight.)

Bottom line

Regent's Seven Seas Grandeur is one of the most elegant and luxurious ships afloat. Its design is exceptional, exuding an upscale air that's unrivaled on any other vessel I've sailed. The cabins are gorgeous homes away from home.

The ship's slower pace means you can linger over a meal or a conversation by the pool and you won't feel like you're missing out on a signature activity. That, blended with an abundance of calm, quiet spaces and a lack of worry about your final bill, means more room for relaxation on your Seven Seas Grandeur vacation.

The eight most expensive cruises in the world

From a trip through southeast asia to a 145-day adventure sailing around the world, all of these voyages have something in common: boats with luxury facilities and services, with prices only suitable for wealthy pockets.

Cruceros Más Caros Lujo

If you hate cruises, maybe it’s because you haven’t found your cruise. Those floating megacities that arrive at port and disembark 5,000 passengers in one go, saturating a city for several hours without spending a euro because they have everything included on board, are the most stereotypical image of the sector. But there are many types of journeys, from small expedition cruises through remote areas where, instead of dancing the conga, you attend lectures from experts on zoology or glaciology, to the hyper-luxury cruises suitable only for wealthy pockets . There, you will not have to fight for a sun chair at the pool or wait in line for a dry burger from the buffet.

I once attended one — for work reasons — with only 600 passengers. Every eight or ten cabins shared a private butler. Ours was named Igor, and he told me that I could order whatever I wanted for a snack. “Even caviar?” I asked jokingly. “Even caviar,” he replied very seriously. So every afternoon, at five o’clock, Igor showed up with a bottle of champagne and a generous tray of Russian caviar, enough to eat by the spoonful. My taste buds still remember it.

Here are eight of the most expensive cruises in the world. They all have some common characteristics: luxury suites, many of them with a private terrace, and 24-hour restaurant service, as well as, of course, the gym, heated pool, sauna and spa, as well as bathroom products from brands like L’Occitane and Hermès. Cheer up, dreaming costs nothing!

Top 12 Most Expensive Cruise Ships In 2024

[Updated for 2024] The means of luxurious lifestyle experiences around us are immense in number. While the search for a one-of-a-kind experience on the land ends with a long list of options to live in the moment, the experiential purchases at sea are limited in contrast to its enormity.

However, at sea, the experiences the luxurious cruise ships and yachts can offer transcend the outnumbered choices on land.

As being affordable to many customers compared to yachts, cruise ships play a big role in meeting the demands of the multi-billion dollar ocean tourism industry.

These floating cities redefine luxury travel by offering awe-inspiring experiences coupled with sumptuous, superlative amenities and impeccable services for travel enthusiasts.

With the increasing demand of customers and the competition within the market, the cruise lines are regularly enriching the cruise experiences with innovative and creative offerings onboard, outdoing each other.

There are massive cruise ships operating at sea today. As a result, the industry attracts billions in investment annually, resulting in the entry of luxurious and expensive cruise ships into operation.

Top 12 Most Expensive Cruise Ships in 2024

Here is a list of the most expensive cruise ships in the world.

1. Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is the lead ship of the Icon Class. This ship was constructed at a whopping cost of 2 billion US Dollars.

Icon of the Seas will enter service on 27th january 2024. This largest cruise ship in the world is powered by LNG with a gross tonnage of 250,800. It has 6 multi-fuel Wartsila Engines that can run on LNG as well as distillate fuel. It also contains fuel cells for producing electricity.

It has a 2350 member crew and can accommodate 7600 guests on its 20 decks packed with entertainment facilities like theatres, play areas for children, concert halls, swimming pools water parks and so on.

2. Oasis Luxury Class: Allure of the Seas & Oasis of the Seas

The Allure of the Seas is one of the two most expensive cruise ships in operation around the world. The second ship in the Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis-class cruise ships, Allure of the Seas, was the world’s largest passenger ship when it launched in November 2009.

Reportedly, around $1.43 billion  was incurred in constructing this world-class cruise ship at the STX Europe Turku shipyard in Finland.

This 1,187-foot-long vessel measures 215 feet in width with a gross registered tonnage of 225,282t. With 18 total decks, the vessel can accommodate a total of 6,780 guests and 2,200 crew members.

Oasis Luxury Class

The main features of the ship include a two-deck dance hall, an ice skating rink, 25 dining options and a theatre with 1,380 seating capacity etc.

The first in Oasis-class luxury ships, Oasis of the Seas is another $1.4bn cruise ship in the Royal Caribbean International’s fleet. This 225,282 GRT vessel was the world’s largest cruise ship when it launched in 2008.

While all other features of the Oasis of the Seas match with its sister vessel, the length of the vessel is reportedly 50 millimetres shorter than Allure of the Seas.

However, it has been stated that the classified length of these vessels was the same, and the changes were unintentional as they happened due to the small changes in the temperature of the steel used for construction.

3. Oasis Class: Symphony of the Seas & Harmony of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis-class cruise ship Symphony of the Seas is the world’s largest passenger ship currently in service. Thus, for obvious reasons, Symphony of the Seas is one the most expensive cruise ships in the world now, with a cost of production of $1.35 billion .

Built by STX France, the vessel measures 1188 feet in length, 215.5 feet in width and 238 feet in height, with a gross registered tonnage of 228,081t.

Another Oasis-class cruise ship of Royal Caribbean International, Harmony of the Seas , is another expensive luxury passenger vessel currently in service.

Despite costing Royal Caribbean the same expense as its sister vessel ($1.35 billion), Harmony of the Seas comes behind  Symphony of the Seas due to the 1,100 tons difference in size from the former.

The 228,081GRT vessel is also 1,188 feet long, 215.5 wide and 238 feet in height.  With 2,747 staterooms in various sizes, Harmony of the Seas is capable of housing 6,687 passengers in addition to 2,200 crew members.

Similar to its sister ship, Harmony of the Seas features several dining and entertainment options abroad. Started construction in 2014, the ship set its first sail in May 2016 to Southampton from the facility of STX France.

MSC World Europa

Want to set sail in style on a deluxe cruise and enjoy five-star service at sea here are the ships we recommend you get on board with.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

T here are cruise ships that cover every definition of luxury, whether you’re looking for 24-hour butler service and fine dining, or boutique lines that provide something more laid-back. Whether you want to dress up or down, high levels of personal service come as standard on these ships and intuitive crew members will greet you by name and mix your favourite drink without asking. And they serve some incredible destinations, including as part of an expedition. Here are our picks of the ones to watch.

Main photo: Le Bougainville, Ponant (Studio Ponant/Clement Louineau)

1. Azamara Quest, Azamara

Best for vegetarians and vegans Azamara Quest is informal and friendly, with warm, contemporary decor that wouldn’t be out of place in a smart boutique hotel. The ship sails northern Europe and the Mediterranean in summer, crossing the Atlantic for a winter season in the Caribbean and South America, including the Rio carnival. Happily, almost everything is covered including drinks. Non-carnivores are well catered for — Azamara has introduced a creative, wide-ranging menu of meat-free dishes across all its restaurants. The two speciality restaurants, Aqualina for fine Italian cuisine and the Prime C steakhouse, are worth the extra cover charge. Both have expansive sea views so time your meal for sunset.

Seabourn Odyssey

2. Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn

Best for intuitive service Seabourn Odyssey brings the highest standards of accommodation and cuisine to its 462 passengers and remains one of the most luxurious ships at sea. The Grill by Thomas Keller features steakhouse classics from one of America’s most celebrated chefs, while the casual Colonnade becomes a romantic outside dining venue by night. Seabourn Square is a clever touch; a combined concierge lounge, library and convivial gathering place, serving all-day snacks and the best coffee at sea. Service is excellent — even the most junior crew members will go out of their way to help with queries. Choose another ship if you’re travelling with young children. Seabourn’s ships have a sophisticated, grown-up vibe and there’s not much entertainment for little ones.

4. Regent Seven Seas Voyager, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Best for foodies It’s hard not to lust after the Regent Seven Seas Voyager. Bask in its 354 opulent suites and indulge in the food — its six restaurants serve exquisite fine dining, including a French speciality restaurant and Compass Rose, where you’ll eat from Versace plates under opulent chandeliers. Every suite on the 700-passenger Voyager has butler service, a marble-lined bathroom and a private veranda. Enjoy blissful days lounging on deck, round the pool — waiters remember your name and your favourite drink from day one, while thoughtful attendants will even polish your sunglasses.

The Verandah on Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth

5. Queen Elizabeth, Cunard

Best for elegance Glamorous, formal and traditional, Cunard’s art deco-inspired Queen Elizabeth harks back to the golden era of ocean travel with daily afternoon tea and black tie dances in the grand ballroom. At the same time, you’ll find the Mareel Wellness & Beauty spa, a choice of restaurants and a traditional British pub, the Golden Lion. You can also tuck into dinner in Steakhouse at the Verandah, a swanky New York-style grill. Pay a visit to the gorgeous library, too, spanning two decks and housing more than 8,000 books.

La Terrazza on Silver Spirit

6. Silver Spirit, Silversea

Best for romance One of the most luxurious cruise ships in the world, the 608-passenger Silver Spirit is the one to choose if you love the idea of butler service, all-inclusive drinks and fine dining. Every cabin is a sumptuous suite and most have a private veranda. Don’t miss Silver Note, an intimate jazz bar. Spend evenings dining under the stars in La Terrazza, the ship’s Italian restaurant, or share the best pizzas at sea in Spaccanapoli.

The Queen’s Room on Queen Mary 2

7. Queen Mary 2, Cunard

Best for enrichment The world’s most famous ship, built for the regular north Atlantic crossing between New York and Southampton, Queen Mary 2 is all about black tie nights, ballroom dancing and fine dining. You can expect to be wowed by the famous White Star Service starts the moment you step on board. Don’t miss the lectures: you’ll hear from some of the world’s greatest artists, historians, wine-tasters and lots more in between on the liner’s transatlantic voyages.

Royal Clipper

8. Royal Clipper, Star Clippers

Best for people who love sailing Carrying just 227 adventurous sailors on swashbuckling Caribbean adventures, Royal Clipper is the world’s biggest and most beautiful square-rigged ship. With three pools, plenty of sunbathing space on her sun-warmed teak decks, a smart restaurant and an alfresco bar, Royal Clipper brings all of the romance of travel under sail without sacrificing creature comforts. Complete with Edwardian touches, faux fireplaces and plenty of polished brass, Royal Clipper has bags of character. It’s propelled along by 56,000 feet of billowing sails and has a loyal following of keen sailors and boat owners. Stay in one of 14 deluxe suites on the main deck and lie in the big nets on either side of the bowsprit — it’s one of the best places to spot dolphins racing the ship. Avoid this ship if you’ve got any mobility issues: there are four decks and no lifts so getting around could prove tricky.

A classic suite on Star Breeze

9. Star Pride, Windstar

Best for spacious cabins Windstar’s petite Star Pride, carrying just 212, is the perfect way to explore the more off-the-beaten-track islands of the Caribbean, with a watersports platform, exceptional cuisine and wonderfully spacious suites — even the smallest is 277 square feet — of which many have private balconies. All cabins come with a queen-size bed, luxurious linens, L’Occitane products, TV and ocean views. The best bits? Rum punch sundowners at the alfresco Star Bar, dinner under the stars at Candles on the aft deck and diving straight off the back of the ship into the warm Caribbean when the watersports platform is lowered.

10. Emerald Harmony, Emerald Cruises

Best for Asian adventure Emerald Harmony is a stylish sanctuary from which to explore the wonders of the Mekong in Cambodia and Vietnam. Expect cool, contemporary design with Asian accents and five-course dinners featuring local and international cuisine in the Reflections Restaurant, as well as beautifully designed cabins, a pool and fitness centre. Be warned, there’s not much entertainment — local performers join at different ports of call, but there’s nothing huge happening each night. The ship carries just 84 passengers and there’s a 2:1 crew ratio.

Le Bougainville (Ponant/Nicolas Matheus)

11. Le Bougainville, Ponant

Best for special features Sleek and stylish, Ponant’s all-inclusive expedition ship, Le Bougainville, is packed with innovative features. There’s an infinity pool on the aft deck, overlooking an extending watersports platform from which you can swim, launch a kayak or board the ship’s Zodiac launches. Inside are beautifully minimalist chic lounges decked out in soothing neutrals, 92 elegant staterooms and a restaurant serving fine French cuisine. Head to the Blue Eye Lounge to spy passing marine life through two giant windows in the ship’s hull as well as on digital screens projecting live images from underwater cameras.

The pool deck on Seabourn Ovation

12. Seabourn Ovation, Seabourn

Best for spa lovers Inspired by the graceful lines and rich tones of a luxurious private yacht, the 600-passenger Seabourn Ovation is one of Seabourn’s slickest ships. A wide range of dining venues, including the Grill by Thomas Keller, offers impressive culinary choices as the ship explores Asia, Australia and New Zealand and the eastern Mediterranean. Book yourself in for some indulgence in the Retreat, a sanctuary on the 12th deck, where a private cabana can be yours for the day. Note that this ship isn’t for you if you’re a minimalist who prefers to avoid alcohol and fine dining. While you’d still have a wonderful time, you would be paying for the indulgence of others.

Mekong Navigator

13. Mekong Navigator, Lotus Cruises

Best for boutique hotel vibes All polished teak, ceiling fans and elegant décor, the 68-passenger Mekong Navigator is a beautifully designed river cruiser. Luxurious touches like marble-lined bathrooms, a spa and a convivial lounge make this a comfortable way to experience the Mekong, a bucket-list journey for many. Prepare to tuck into full-board luxury dining and stretch out on its spacious sun decks.

A staircase onboard Azamara Pursuit

14. Azamara Pursuit, Azamara

Best for affordable luxury The 702-passenger Azamara Pursuit brings an all-inclusive experience in an elegantly refurbished ship. Azamara’s “destination immersion” ethos means itineraries, many of which venture off the beaten path, are designed to maximise time in port. Each cruise includes an AzAmazing event, an exclusive and often elaborate taste of local culture, and a glamorous White Night deck party. The two speciality restaurants, Aqualina and Prime C, are wonderful, serving classy Italian and steak and seafood respectively. Both are well worth the cover charge to create a sense of occasion.

15. Seabourn Venture, Seabourn

Best for exploring Seabourn’s original expedition vessel launched in July 2022, Seabourn Venture combines all the luxury touches you’d expect from this cruise stalwart with itineraries in far flung corners of the world. Northern hemisphere winters are spent in the southern hemisphere exploring Antarctica and South America, while the Arctic is among the destinations on the calling card for the summer season. On board, there are just 132 all veranda, all ocean-front suites — but this is really about getting off the ship. To that end, the ship carries two custom-built submarines, 24 Zodiacs, and a fleet of double sea kayaks for all those excursions that are included in your sailing.

• Best luxury cruises to Antarctica

16. S.S. Maria Theresa, Uniworld

Best for Decadence Named after one of the most powerful female rulers in European history, S.S. Maria Theresa is as opulent as they come. The interiors are inspired by the grand Baroque palaces of the 18th century, with antique mirrors, hand-painted murals and a Murano chandelier further adding to the regal atmosphere. Suffice to say you’ll awake each morning from the hand-crafted Savoir bed feeling like royalty. Staterooms and suites on the Hofburg Deck are the most sought after; their balconies transform into a conservatory at the touch of a button. Like other Uniworld ships, S.S. Maria Theresa sails in just one region — along the Danube and Main rivers, stopping in cities that would have been part of the Habsburg empire.

• Best river cruises in Europe

17. The Oberoi Zahra, The Oberoi Hotels and Resorts

Best for Nile cruises This is an unusual one: luxury hotel group The Oberoi has ventured into river cruising and the result is the modern and minimalist Oberoi Zahra, which sails exclusively on the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. There are just 27 cabins on board, keeping the atmosphere intimate, while the signature Oberoi Spa and top deck pool offers plenty of space for relaxation between the excursions. Your journey is guided by an English-speaking Egyptologist, with the tours at a leisurely pace, and the vessel has its own private mooring in Aswan.

Secrets of the World's Most Expensive Cruise Ship season 2: release date and all we know

Secrets of the World's Most Expensive Cruise Ship season 2 took us behind the scenes of The Splendor as they sailed around the world.

Destinations Manager Roland sitting at a fancy dinner table on Secrets of the World's Most Expensive Cruise Ship season 2

Secrets of the World's Most Expensive Cruise Ship season 2 saw luxurious cruise ship The Splendor take to the high seas as the staff worked tirelessly to give their guests the trip of a lifetime while they sailed around the world.

A trip onboard The Splendor is the pinnacle of opulence, with suites that cost up to £9000 a night, five fine-dining restaurants, a designer jewelry boutique, a luxury spa and over four million pounds worth of art lining the walls.

But with high luxury came high pressure as we went behind the scenes to meet the staff who must deliver exquisite service to make sure that every guest's stay is perfect.

From the entertainment crew, the food and drinks team, the excursion organizers and housekeeping, everyone in the 567-person crew is under pressure to provide an impeccable level of service for their guests.

Here's everything you need to know about Secrets of the World's Most Expensive Cruise Ship season 2...

When will Secrets of the World's Most Expensive Cruise Ship season 2 air?

Secrets of the World's Most Expensive Cruise Ship season 2 aired on Friday, January 27 on Channel 5 at 9 pm. Episodes of the four-part series then continued every Friday.

Episodes 1-2 are now available to stream on My5.

What happens in Secrets of the World's Most Expensive Cruise Ship season 2?

The official synopsis of the first episode read: "The World’s Most Expensive Cruise Ship is in Iceland for the very first time in its history, embarking on a cruise that will take in some of Scandinavia’s most stunning scenery. And it’s not just the port of call that’s different — Lizzie is the brand-new social hostess — or as she’s affectionately dubbed, ‘The First Lady of the Ship’.

"Formerly a cruise ship singer/dancer, it’s the first time Lizzie has stepped into this role, where she’s responsible for all the social aspects — from cocktail parties to hosting dinners, crafting activities and games. Lizzie is hoping to prove to her bosses that she is worth re-hiring after her probation period ends."

However, it's not plain sailing as when the ship leaves Iceland, stormy weather ruins its planned docking in Heimaey, resulting in an unexpected day at sea and the crew must come up with an impromptu plan to keep the passengers entertained.

Social Hostess Lizzie.

Also, "we get a thrilling glimpse into what money can buy on board this six-star floating hotel, which even includes an extensive pillow menu on offer to guests, from water pillows to buckwheat pillows and even a tri-side anatomic pillow! With over 150 excursions included with every cruise, Destinations Manager Roland is a very busy man.

"But when a call comes in requesting a bespoke, off-menu trip, he has his work cut out. With just a few days to put together the trip of a lifetime, can Roland deliver an excursion to remember?"

To complete the voyage, the cruise throws an extravagant no-expense-spared 4th of July party, bringing together the whole entertainment team to see out their adventure with a bang. Will the party be a success with the guests? And can Social Hostess Lizzie blow passengers away with her solo number?

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

world's.most expensive cruise ship

Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant

French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.

Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the  Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.

Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.

Cunard Line

Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line

This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.

Celebrity Cruises

Steve Dunlop / Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises ' new Edge Series ships are taking things up a notch. Celebrity's signature Iconic Suites on board the Celebrity Edge and Apex offer panoramic views from above the ship's bridge; each suite boasts more than 2,500 square feet of space, including expansive 690-square-foot terraces, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Celebrity Beyond , which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Beyond 's sibling ship, Ascent , will be delivered later this year.

Top 13 Most Expensive Cruise Ships in World 2023

world's.most expensive cruise ship

Costs quickly add up when outfitting a massive ship with all the amenities and extras found in a five-star hotel. It’s no wonder that the average ticket price is so high, given that modern cruise ships cost hundreds of millions to build (or more, as we’ll see).

If you were curious about how much some of the world’s most luxurious and huge cruise ships truly cost to build, here is a list of the top 13 most expensive cruise ships ever built. The list features ships in increasingly expensive order.

Because of rising consumer expectations and fierce industry competition, cruise companies are always innovating and topping one another with cutting-edge onboard features.

Huge cruise ships populate today’s oceans. Because of this, the industry consistently receives billions of dollars in funding, which allows luxurious cruise liners to be developed.

So, let’s dive into our top 13 list of the most expensive cruise ships around the globe.

Carnival Mardi Gras

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The Carnival Mardi Gras was a ground-breaking ship when it made its debut in 1972. Its initial focus, which set it apart from other cruise ships at the time, was on festive enjoyment for all passengers (thus the name). The most recent Mardis Gras, which was built in 2021 and had 2,641 staterooms, 18 passenger decks, and a rollercoaster, maintains the distinctive onboard environment to this day. It costs $950 million .

Celebrity Edge

world's.most expensive cruise ship

Celebrity Cruises, a division of the Royal Caribbean Group, operates the Celebrity Edge, an Edge-class cruise ship. The order for the new ship was placed in December 2014 with the French shipbuilder STX France; the keel was laid in June 2017, and the ship was floated out at the start of 2018.

She joined the Celebrity fleet in October 2018 and, with 130,818 GT, became the largest ship by gross tonnage to enter the Edge class. Celebrity Edge launched her first season on November 6, 2018, after giving birth on a transatlantic voyage from France to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Since December 2018, Celebrity Edge has operated out of Port Everglades, making weekly cruises to the Mediterranean in the summer and the Western and Eastern Caribbean in the winter. It costs a billion dollars .

Norwegian Bliss

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The list now includes the brand-new, enormously luxurious Norwegian Bliss cruise liner, which cost nearly $1 billion to construct.

The third ship of the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway Plus class, Norwegian Bliss, was constructed at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany (NCL). NCL’s 16th ship, the Norwegian Bliss, is based in Miami. Sister ships include the Norwegian Escape and the Norwegian Joy.

The ship’s signature feature is the 180° observation lounge on deck 15. The 6096 m (20,000ft) – 2 salon offers amazing views of the ocean and is encircled by floor-to-ceiling windows.

MSC Bellissima

world's.most expensive cruise ship

Cruise ship MSC Bellissima is run by MSC Cruises. She was built at Saint-Nazaire, France’s Chantiers de l’Atlantique. The vessel joined MSC Meraviglia in the Meraviglia class of cruise ships owned by the business. She can accommodate 4,500 passengers and has a tonnage of 171,600GT. Launched in March 2019, the ship.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MSC Cruises announced the cancellation of all North American cruises through June 30, 2020. On March 4, 2019, MSC Bellissima set sail for her first journey, and on March 12, 2019, she made her first port of call in Spain. The ship costs $1 Billion .

MSC Meraviglia

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The MSC Meraviglia is a cruise ship that belongs to MSC Cruises and is run by them. STX France built it at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France. The Meraviglia class of MSC’s new “Vista Project” ships is headed by the MSC Meraviglia, with the MSC Bellissima class, which followed in 2019. There are 4,500 passengers on each vessel.

It was the sixth-largest cruise ship in the world when it first went into service in June 2017, trailing only AIDAnova and Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class vessels. The ship, which has previously cruised in Northern Europe and the western Mediterranean, made its first move to the US in the fall of 2019 to New York and Miami in order to sail to the Caribbean as part of MSC’s North American growth program. It costs $1 Billion .

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The AIDAnova is the first ship of AIDA Cruises’ new Excellence-class fleet and is rumored to be the world’s fifth-largest passenger ship. This 337 m (1105 ft) long luxury ship was made at a reported cost of $1.1 billion by Meyer Werft in Germany.

AIDAnova was introduced in December 2018, and its standout feature is the Green Cruising concept. It is the first cruise ship in the world that can be powered by liquefied natural gas both at sea and in port (LNG).

With a capacity of 1,500 crew members and up to 6,600 passengers, the 183,900 GT AIDAnova has more than 2,600 passenger cabins. To suit the upscale dining and entertainment needs of the passengers, the ship features a total of 17 restaurants, a luxury day spa, 23 bars, and a 360-degree theatre, among other amenities.

Norwegian Epic

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The Norwegian Epic, one of Norwegian Cruise Lines’ most expensive ships, cost $1.2 billion to construct due to its distinctive size and design.

The ship boasts one of the biggest aqua parks and single-occupancy rooms. At the time it was built, it could hold 4,228 people, which made it the third-largest cruise ship in the world. It underwent a renovation in 2020, making travel there a modern luxury.

It is 329.45 m (1082 ft) long and 52 m (170 ft) wide, with a gross tonnage of 155,873.

MSC World Europa

world's.most expensive cruise ship

Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas are similar in terms of their onboard amenities and activities, and layout. The 1,188-foot-long, billion-dollar ship can accommodate 6,410 passengers in total.

The Ultimate Abyss slide, which carries visitors down ten decks at nine miles per hour, is one of its standout features. It costs around $1.35 Billion.

The appropriately titled Wonder of the Seas features 2,874 cabins, 19 pools, and 17 decks (15 guest-accessible decks) (the most on any cruise ship). This beauty costs around $1.35 Billion .

Oasis of the Seas

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The “seven neighborhoods” design element, which has subsequently been adopted by its sister ships and has virtually become a standard, was initially used by the first ship of the Oasis class, The Oasis of the Seas.

When it was launched in 2009, it broke the previous capacity record (6,780), and it also has the deepest high dive pool ever to sail. It was built for roughly $1.4 billion by STX Europe in Turku, Finland.

The Broadway musical “Hairspray” was performed exclusively for guests as onboard entertainment.

The Allure of the Seas

world's.most expensive cruise ship

The $1.5 billion Allure of the Seas is now the most expensive cruise ship in the world, surpassing her The Allure of the Seas, which debuted in 2010, features 25 different dining establishments, four swimming pools, and ten whirlpools, and can house up to 6,314 passengers at once.

The 1,188-foot Royal Caribbean vessel features a cutting-edge theatre with seating for 1,380, where passengers may enjoy productions like the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “Chicago.”

A man has opened up about the ‘scandals and secrets’ while living on board the world’s most exclusive residential cruise ship, saying ‘a lot of partying’ goes on.

Retired lawyer Peter Antonucci spent six years as a resident of The World, a luxury cruise ship launched in 2002 as an exclusive playground for multimillionaires to travel the world.

He and his wife had first heard about it in 2012, when he was 52 and settling in to his early retirement.

“When I first got on, I thought it was ridiculously expensive,” Antonucci told CNN.

“I couldn’t believe the apartments cost so much. I couldn’t believe the maintenance costs were so much and couldn’t imagine why anybody would do this.

“But the second day, I was saying, ‘How many apartments do you have available and when can I sign up?’”

The World is an exclusive cruise ship (The World)

He estimates he bought the first on-board apartment for around $1.6 million , before going on to buy even pricier units for around $4 million a pop.

Since selling up in 2019, after realising he’d seen everything he wanted to do and was ready for something ‘new’, Antonucci turned his hand to writing books about his time on The World, describing the experience as a ‘country club meets sorority house’ vibe.

“The politics, and the gossip on the ship got a little overwhelming,” he also admitted.

Antonucci explained to CNN that to compare The World to fictional hotel chain The White Lotus - the setting for HBO series of the same name – would not be ‘inaccurate’.

“There are a lot of wealthy people doing playful things, sometimes naughty things, sometimes scandalous things,” he said, adding that ‘a lot of drinking and carousing’ can often lead to ‘scandals and secrets’.

“Stuff happens. Some of it is fun. Some of it is people just getting blasted and singing songs and just having a good old time. And that’s relatively harmless.

“And then even some of the affairs and things are harmless – if the people are available, single, that’s fine.

“But there are married people, married couples on the ship, who are not always sleeping with their spouse.”

Antonucci said he never ‘engaged in that’, but would often enjoy having a good laugh about it over a drink with friends.

According to the dad-of-two , the ‘greatest asset’ of the ship wasn’t all the bells and whistles, but the crew, who were always able to anticipate his every need.

“It was like an orchestra with a lot of different parts,” he recalled.

“Each one was great. But together, it was a symphony.”

Antonucci owned several apartments on board over the years (The World)

As for the ‘most incredible thing’ he’s seen throughout his exclusive cruising life, Antonucci said he doesn’t ‘even know where to begin’.

“I could talk about the Solomon Islands,” he said.

“I could tell you how every time we went to South Africa, we would get off and go on a safari for a week.

“We set a Guinness World Record for being the vessel that traveled furthest south of any vessel in history.

“[...] Those are all very, very special memories.”

I worked on cruises for 3 years. Here are 6 things I'd never do on board.

  • I used to work on cruises. After many days at sea, there are things I'd never do on a cruise .
  • I never wear my room key around my neck and try to avoid misnaming the ship.
  • I never buy the drink package or pay for meal upgrades in the main dining room.

Insider Today

I've sailed around the world as a cruise-ship employee , and now I enjoy cruising as a passenger.

I love the salty sea air, waking up in a new country, and lazy days by the pool, but a week at sea could get more complicated this year with cruises predicted to be in high demand .

While fighting a little harder to secure a prime seat on the pool deck, you may as well also avoid some rookie mistakes.

Here are six things I'd never do on a cruise after working on them for three years.

Pay for upgrades in the main dining room

Typically, main dining room meals are included in the cost of a cruise. But in recent years, it's become common for cruise lines to charge guests extra if they want to upgrade to "supplementary" items like lobster or certain steaks.

I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food.

So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.

Buy the drink package

I enjoy a piña colada by the pool or a Manhattan while listening to a jazz set after dinner. Even so, it doesn't make sense for me to pay in advance for 12 to 15 cocktails a day.

I've done the math on typical unlimited drink packages , and the cost simply isn't worth it for me.

This is especially true with a port-heavy itinerary. If I've gone ashore to explore all day, that means I'm not sidled up to the bar slurping down alcoholic slushies.

Related stories

I prefer to buy as I go and take advantage of happy hour and other drink specials that are available on certain cruise lines. I also check the beverage policy in advance and bring on my own wine, if allowed.

Touch shared contact surfaces with my fingers

Fellow guests will never see me touching the elevator buttons with my fingertips. Knuckles and elbows do the trick.

Some cruise lines are better than others at wiping down commonly touched surfaces, but I don't take any chances. I avoid touching things others frequently touch, and I wash my hands frequently.

This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on. It's quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer . I'd definitely rather be safe than sorry.

Wear my room key around my neck

I never walk around the ship with my room key around my neck, and I especially never do this when on land.

There are two reasons for this. First, I see many passengers using the room keys dangling from their necks to flaunt their cruise loyalty status . It just looks pretentious.

The sophisticated cruisers with the highest status, with the most days at sea, never show off their fancy room keys.

That's because they know the more important reason — safety. In port, that room key bouncing off your chest looks like an invitation to be robbed. It screams, "I have money! Come and take it from me."

Misname the ship

English is a funny language that has its quirks. Naming conventions make that even more complicated.

Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, "Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess," or "I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam."

If you want to look like a savvy sailor, learn to drop the "the!"

Plan my port-day itinerary so tight that I may not make it back to the ship on time

Oh, the recurring nightmares I've had about not making it back to the ship on time during a port day.

I've never missed a sail away, but I have cut it too close at times and have had to run down a pier or two. Just recently, as a passenger, my taxi driver got lost returning our group to the port at night.

When I realized how late we were going to be, I forked over $8 per minute to be connected with the ship. I pleaded with them to wait for us. It was a sprint through the port to get back on and we received quite a scolding from the first officer.

That time, we got lucky. In the future, I'll be giving myself more time than I think I need to make it back.

Singaporean firm whose ship took down the Baltimore bridge just cited an 1851 maritime law to cap liability at $44 million

Maryland Bridge

The owner and manager of a cargo ship that rammed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge before the span  collapsed last week  filed a court petition Monday seeking to limit their legal liability for the deadly disaster.

The companies’ “limitation of liability” petition is a routine but important procedure for cases litigated under U.S. maritime law. A federal court in Maryland ultimately decides who is responsible—and how much they owe—for what could become one of the costliest catastrophes of its kind.

Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd. owns the Dali, the vessel that lost power before it slammed into the bridge early last Tuesday. Synergy Marine Pte Ltd., also based in Singapore, is the ship’s manager.

Their  joint filing  seeks to cap the companies’ liability at roughly $43.6 million. It estimates that the vessel itself is valued at up to $90 million and was owed over $1.1 million in income from freight. The estimate also deducts two major expenses: at least $28 million in repair costs and at least $19.5 million in salvage costs.

The companies filed under a pre-Civil War provision of an 1851 maritime law that allows them to seek to limit their liability to the value of the vessel’s remains after a casualty. It’s a mechanism that has been employed as a defense in many of the most notable maritime disasters, said James Mercante, a New York City-based attorney with over 30 years of experience in maritime law.

“This is the first step in the process,” Mercante said. “Now all claims must be filed in this proceeding.”

Cases like this typically take years to completely resolve, said Martin Davies, director of Tulane University Law School’s Maritime Law Center.

“Although it’s a humongous case with a very unusual set of circumstances, I don’t think it’s going to be that complicated in legal terms,” he said. “All aspects of the law are very clear here, so I think the thing that will take the time here is the facts. What exactly went wrong? What could have been done?”

A report from credit rating agency Morningstar DBRS predicts the bridge collapse could become the most expensive marine insured loss in history, surpassing the record of about $1.5 billion held by the 2012  shipwreck of the Costa Concordia  cruise ship off Italy. Morningstar DBRS estimates total insured losses for the Baltimore disaster could be $2 billion to $4 billion.

Eight people were working on the highway bridge—a 1.6-mile (2.6-kilometer) span over the Patapsco River—when it collapsed. Two were rescued. The bodies of two more were recovered. Four remain missing and are presumed dead.

The wreckage closed the Port of Baltimore, a major shipping port, potentially costing the area’s economy hundreds of millions of dollars in lost labor income alone over the next month.

Experts say the  cost to rebuild  the collapsed bridge could be at least $400 million or as much as twice that, though much will depend on the new design.

The amount of money families can generally be awarded for wrongful death claims in maritime law cases is subject to several factors, including how much money the person would have likely provided in financial support to their family if they had not died.

Generally, wrongful death damages may also include things such as funeral expenses and the “loss of nurture,” which is essentially the monetary value assigned to whatever moral, spiritual or practical guidance the victim would have been able to provide to their children.

Associated Press writer Stefanie Dazio in Los Angeles contributed to this report.
