Yana is a quaint village where the luxurious expanse of the Sahyadri Hills is interspersed with two unique rock outcrops that the locals know as the Bhairaveshwar Shikhar and the Mohini Shikhar. Both of these are easily reached by making a short trek of about half a kilometre through lush forests from the nearest road head. The Bhairaweshvar Shikhar is 390 ft high while the Mohini Shikhar is 300 ft high. Both the rock formations are solid black, crystalline Karst limestone. A religious attraction nearby is the cave temple below the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara, which contains a swayambhu linga (self-originated idol).

Water drips from the roof just over the linga and many believe that this increases the sanctity of the place. An interesting part of the annual Shivratri celebrations here is the car festival that attracts a lot of visitors. Thousands of pilgrims flock to this scenic spot every year. For an adventure traveller, the rock outcrops and hills provide many trails and routes for trekking. There are many excellent opportunities for birdwatching as well. Despite the constant buzz of tourists, Yana village has retained its rustic charm of mud roads lined with mushroom-like huts nestled securely between the verdant arms of the Western Ghats.

Yana Caves – A 120 metre tall Spectacular Natural Wonder

Yana Caves

Yana Caves is indeed a popular tourist destination located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. The Yana Caves are known for their unique limestone rock formations and are situated in the Sahyadri Range of the Western Ghats. There is a saying in Kannada ” Sokkiddavanu Yanakke, Rokka iddavanu Gokarnakke”. That mean one who seeks adventure goes to Yana and the one who has money goes to Gokarna.

How to reach Yana Caves:

An appropriate site for adventurers and lord shiva devotees, history of yana and the legend bhasmasura, two “shikharas” are the true natural wonders, home of centuries-old bhairaveshwara, do’s and dont’s.

Yana is a tourist site located in the forest of the Katgal Range. It is a part of the Malenadu region in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. There are two methods to reach Yana. One is along the Kumta-Sirsi Highway, followed by a two-kilometer trek. Other is from Sirsi – Ankola Road, followed by a 1 kilometre trek. Below are few transportation methods you can follow to travel to Yana.

Location: Yana Caves, Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka

Timings: 8 am to 6 pm. Open all 365 days of a year.

Entry Fee: 10 INR per person (As of December 2023). A good parking lot and a nominal parking fee for vehicles.

By Air :The nearest airport to Yana is Hubballi Airport (HBX) , which is approximately 135 km away. Mangaluru International Airport (IXE) is 232 kilometres distant. To go from these airports to the destination, you can rent a taxi.

By Train: The nearest station to Yana is Kumta Railway Station (KT), which is around 30 kilometres distant. It is a grade C station in the Konkan Railway zone. Trains arrive at this station from important cities such as Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Karwar, and Madgaon. From the railway station, one can travel by cab or bus.

By Road: Yana is located just 30 kilometres from Kumta and 38 km from Sirsi. The road connecting the two cities is in decent condition. There are few buses that travel from these places to Yana. On the other hand, if you have your own vehicle, reaching Yana Caves is not difficult at all.

How did we Travel: Since Honnavara is Sneha’s hometown, we started there in the morning, and it was only an hour drive to Yana by our car.

Trekking Path

Yana caves provides both adventure and devotion for devotees of Lord Shiva. If you take the Kumta-Sirsi road, you will have to trek for around 2 kilometers. The walk is medium-level and may be finished within half an hour. However, if you take the Ankola-Sirsi Road, the trek is only one kilometer long. Both routes end at the bottom of Bhairaveshwara Shikara. Lord Shiva lives in Yana as Bhairaveshwara.

Bhasmasura, a demon who had lured Shiva with penance, approached Shiva and sought for a boon. The person whose head he places his hands on will turn to ashes. Shiva agrees and says Tathaastu. Then Bhasmasura rushes to try his boon on Shiva himself. Shiva, terrified, proceeded to seek Vishnu’s help. Agreeing, Vishnu takes on the shape of Mohini, a lovely woman, and arrives at this location. Bhasmasura becomes engrossed with Mohini’s charisma.

Mohini then challenges Bhasmasura to dance alongside her and imitate her. To impress Mohini, Bhasmasura mimics her movements. Mohini gently and thoughtfully rests her palm on her head. The demon unknowingly makes the identical move and is reduced to ashes as per the boon. This catastrophe was so violent that the limestone present there not only converted to ashes, but also exploded from the ground to the sky. People call it Bhasma (Ash) because the soil here is black in colour.

Mohini Shikhara

The Mohini Bhasmasura event resulted in the formation of two limestone Shikaras (summits). One is the “Mohini Shikhara” and the other is the “ Bhairaveshwara Shikhara “. Both of them appear to have risen from the land as volcanoes and then frozen.

The Mohini Shikhara is 90 metres tall. A little entrance at the bottom of the peak allows visitors to take a tour around the peak. Similarly, the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara is 120 metres tall. It, too, has a passage that allows visitors to tour the peak. Both appear massive, and what distinguishes them is their formation. There are many bats and honey bee combs on these cliffs.

Bhairaveshwara Temple

Lord Shiva in Yana is known as Bhairaveshwara. The lingam present here is supposed to be Swayam Bhoo (Self Incarnated) and is centuries old. A temple is constructed at the base of the Bhairaweshwara Shikara. The lingam here is worshipped daily with great devotion. Shivaratri is celebrated here with great grandeur for 10 days. More than 10 thousand pilgrims join here to witness the festival.

Seats

  • Yana is located in a protected forest area, hence there are no homestays or lodges within the trekking zones. However, there are adequate seats and a rest area. Toilet facilities are also available.
  • Visitors must pay a small cost for all plastic objects such as bottles, handbags, and eatery covers for food items at the checkpoint when entry tickets are issued. The cash will be repaid if they bring it back without polluting.
  • Monkeys are abundant in forests since they are their native environment. They take the food or precious equipment from your hands. One must be extremely careful when dealing with those creatures.
  • Carry adequate water with you when trekking. Shops selling water, cold drinks, juices, and snacks are available at both the top and bottom of the Yana Caves.
  • A large number of sign boards with messages about saving the forest and keeping the area clean have been installed. It is the primary duty of tourists to obey them and preserve nature for future generations.

To summarise, a visit to Yana Caves provides a harmonious combination of geological magnificence, cultural richness, and spiritual depth. It is a place where you can marvel at the wonders of the Earth, contemplate on the passing of time, and find serenity in the embrace of nature. Whether you are an explorer, a history buff, or a seeker of spiritual understanding, Yana Caves will leave an unforgettable impression on your heart and mind, making it a location to treasure and revisit.

Yana Rock Caves Travel & Trek Guide from Sirsi & Kumta

Mohini Shikhara Yana

Yana is a village located almost between Sirsi & Kumta in north Karnataka. Yana is known for its unusual black rock formations. Below is the complete Yana travel guide.

Page Contents

Yana Caves & Rocks:

Yana is mainly famous for two magnificent black rock formations which are known as the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and the Mohini Shikhara. The huge black rocks are composed of solid black, crystalline Karst limestone.

The Yana Caves are a group of rock-cut temples located in the village of Yana in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. The caves are made of black, crystalline limestone and are known for their striking appearance. They are believed to have been carved out of the rock during the 9th and 10th centuries AD and are considered to be an important example of rock-cut architecture in India.

There are two main caves at Yana, known as the Bhairaveshwara and the Mohini caves. The Bhairaveshwara Cave is the larger of the two and is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. It contains a large, intricately carved Shiva Linga, as well as several other shrines and statues. The Mohini Cave is smaller and is dedicated to the goddess Mohini, who is believed to be an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu.

The Yana Caves are a popular destination for visitors due to their unique and beautiful architecture, as well as the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Trekking to the caves is a popular activity, and the trek typically takes about half a day to complete. It is recommended to wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey.

Yana Caves Timings

The Yana Caves are open to visitors every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is recommended to arrive early in the day to avoid crowds and to have the best lighting for viewing the caves.

It is also important to note that the Yana Caves are located in a remote, rural area, so it is advisable to plan your visit in advance and ensure that you have everything you need for the trip. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks, as well as appropriate clothing and footwear for the journey. It is also a good idea to bring a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent to protect yourself from the sun and any potential bugs.

Finally, it is recommended to respect the cultural and spiritual significance of the Yana Caves and to follow the rules and guidelines set by the authorities. This includes not touching or defacing any of the artifacts or structures in the caves, and being mindful of the rules and customs of the local community.

Mohini Shikhara Yana

Mohini Shikhara, Yana

Bhairaveshwara Shikhara which comes after the Mohini Shikhara is 120 meters (390 ft) in height, while the Mohini Shikhara is around 90 meters (300 ft) in height. Both of these hills are rising sharply in the sky.

How to Reach Yana Caves from Sirsi & Kumta:

Yana is around 55 Kms from Sirsi and 30 Kms from Kumta side. Yana is North-East to Kumta and West to Sirsi. There is a proper road until the yana parking lot and from there you can trek to the Yana caves. For driving to the Yana caves, search on Google for the Yana caves .  Drive to Yana is really scenic from both the sides as you drive completely through the dense western Ghats forests.

On the Way to Yana

On the Way to Yana

The trek begins at the base of the Yana hills and takes you through dense forests and over rocky terrain, eventually reaching the Yana caves. The caves, which are made of black, crystalline limestone, are a popular destination for visitors due to their unique and striking appearance. The trek typically takes about half a day to complete and is suitable for people of all fitness levels. It is recommended to wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey.

Earlier there used to be a 10 Km of trekking to Yana. But there is a nice single road to Yana until where you can drive and park your vehicle. You will have to leave the Kumta-Sirsi road in between and drive on the single road to reach Yana. At the main entrance, there is a bathroom facility but it was locked when we visited there and there is a small shop as well. At the entrance, you can park your vehicle. There is no vehicle parking fee. But there is a fee of Rupees 5 as the Yana entrance fee.

Yana trek is now about of almost 2 Km. Out of which 1.5 Km is a regular walk on a trail and last half a Km, you will have climb stairs to Yana caves. The Yana trek is mostly along a waterfall. The water is very clean and you can also take a dip inside the water pool. So did we. On the weekends, Yana would be sparsely crowded. However, you might not encounter vehicles or people except a few bikers while driving to the Yana caves. Same might happen on the Yana trek as well but chances are there that you will find local people going to the Yana cave temple.

You will first see the Mohini Shikhara while climbing the stairs, then you will see the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara. There is a temple of Lord Shiva there. There is another shop near Bhairaveshwara Shikhara where you can buy snacks. Some of the tourist places which you can visit from Yana are Sahastralinga , Jog falls , Gokarna trek , Mirjan fort etc.

Mythical story behind Yana caves:

According to the Hindu mythology, there was a demon king with the name as Bhasmasura. By austere penance, Bhasmasura was able to make lord Shiva very happy. So lord Shiva asked Bhasmasura to ask him for a boon. So Bhasmasura obtained a boon from lord Shiva when he will place his hand over any one’s head, he would burn them up and turn them into ashes (Bhasma).

Now with the boon, Bhasmasura got excited and to test his powers, he thought of testing the power with Shiva’s head. So he began running after Shiva while lord Shiva began escaping from him.

Looking at this scenario, there was a hue and cry in the heaven and all the Gods went to lord Vishnu who is said to be the Guru who can resolve all the problems. So to protect lord Shiva, lord Vishnu turned himself up into a beautiful damsel (Mohini) to entice Bhasmasura with her beauty.

Bhasmsura was quite infatuated by Mohini and asked Mohini to marry him. But Mohini put up a challenge before him that he had to do some dance before her. The dance steps involved putting the hand on his own head. Infatuated, Bhasmasura, began dancing. Without realizing, he put his hands on his own head and he burnt himself down.

The gigantic crystalline-like rock formations of Yana stand proud and tall among the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in Uttara Kannada District. Yana is an ideal destination for pilgrims, trekkers, and nature-lovers alike. A 16km trek through the cool and breezy hills brings you to the foot of the mountain where the rock formations begin. At the top, a stunning sight awaits you: the awesome Bhairaveshwara and Jaganmohini shikharas (or peaks). A cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva lies below these shikharas. The vagaries of time have caused these limestone structures to turn blackish brown and lots of beehives dot the rock surface. A popular legend associated with Yana holds that Bhasmasura, an evil demon, performed penance to Lord Shiva and obtained the power of reducing to ashes anybody on whose head he placed his hand. An ungrateful Bhasmasura, however, soon decided to test the boon on his benefactor. To escape from him, Lord Shiva came to earth and hid in this place. Lord Vishnu taking the form of a beautiful woman Mohini, challenged the demon to dance and made him touch his own head and thereby reducing him to ashes.

Yana rocks are an adventure seeker’s ultimate destination. Yanà in Uttara Kannada district attracts trekkers and climbers from all over the world.

Why Visit Yana:

  • Hike up to the rocks: Yana attracts hikers because of its two massive rock formations, known as Bhairaveshwara hill and Mohini hill (90 meters) in height.
  • Temples: At the bottom of Bhairaveshwara hill, a Shiva temple, believed to be self emerged exists. Water drips on the Shiva Linga from the top of rocks.

There is a Kannada saying “ Sokku iddare Yana, Rokka iddare Gokarna ”-  If you have lots of money to spend, go to Rona (Gokarna), if you are feeling over enthusiastic, visit Yanà. This saying was due to extreme difficulty one had to face in the past to reach Yana. Now well paved roads take you till the bottom of the rocks.

Mythology: The names of the majestic rocks at Yana are linked to an interesting section in Hindu mythology. A demon named Bhasmasura manages to get a unique gift that anything on which he keeps his palm burns into ashes (bhasma). With this unique skill Bhasmasura wrecks havoc and attempts to try his skill on the very person who granted the gift- Lord Shiva. Fearing his life, Lord Shiva seeks help from Lord Vishnu, who takes the shape of a beautiful woman named Mohini and appears in front of Bhasmasura. Trying to win over Mohini, Bhasmasura accepts her challenge to dance with her and perform the same steps as she does. As the dance progresses, Mohini keeps her hand over her head. Bhasmasura performs the same act and burns into ashes.

How to reach Yana: Plan about half a day to explore Yana. A visit to Yanà rocks can also be clubbed with a visit to Murudeshwara (76 kms), Gokarna (48 kms) and Karwar (90 kms) along the coastline would be a wonderful option especially for those looking to enjoy some vitamin sea.

Are you looking for a unique and adventurous place to visit in Karnataka? If yes, then you should definitely check out Yana Caves, a natural wonder that will leave you spellbound. Yana Caves are a pair of massive limestone formations that rise from the dense forests of the Western Ghats. They are located near the coastal town of Gokarna, which is famous for its beaches and temples.

Yana Caves are not only a geological marvel, but also a sacred site that has a fascinating legend behind it. In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about Yana Caves, including their history, legend, trekking route, temple, and view from the top. Read on to discover why Yana Caves are a must-visit destination in Gokarna.

History and Legend of Yana Caves

Yana Caves are formed by the erosion of black crystalline karst, which is a type of limestone that contains carbon. The caves and rocks have been shaped by the action of water and wind over millions of years. The result is a stunning sight of two towering peaks that stand out from the green landscape. The peaks are named Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara, and they are about 120 meters and 90 meters high respectively. The caves are located at the base of these peaks, and they have a total length of about 3 kilometers.

The name Yana comes from the Sanskrit word Yantra, which means a machine or device. According to Hindu mythology, Yana Caves were the hiding place of Lord Shiva, who was chased by a demon named Bhasmasura. Bhasmasura had obtained a boon from Lord Shiva that he could turn anyone into ashes by touching their head. He wanted to test his power on Lord Shiva himself, and thus he followed him everywhere.

Photo of Yana Caves 1/5 by

Lord Shiva ran away from Bhasmasura and reached Yana Caves, where he disguised himself as a rock. Lord Vishnu came to his rescue and took the form of Mohini, a beautiful woman who enchanted Bhasmasura. She lured him to dance with her, and made him touch his own head as a gesture. As soon as he did that, he turned into ashes and died. The ashes of Bhasmasura became the black rocks of Yana, and the rock that Lord Shiva hid in became the Shiva Linga, a symbol of his presence. A temple was built around the Shiva Linga inside one of the caves, and it is still worshipped by devotees today.

The legend of Yana Caves is not only an interesting story, but also a lesson on how greed and arrogance can lead to one’s downfall. It also shows how Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are different aspects of the same supreme reality, and how they work together to protect the world from evil.

Trekking to Yana Caves

One of the best ways to experience Yana Caves is by trekking to them through the lush forests of the Western Ghats. The trekking route to Yana Caves starts from a village called Vibhuti, which is about 18 kilometers from Gokarna. The trek is about 8 kilometers long, and it takes about 3 hours to complete. The difficulty level is moderate, and it is suitable for all age groups and fitness levels.

The temple houses a Shiva Linga that is about 3 meters high and 2 meters wide. The Shiva Linga is covered with a silver mask that has five faces, representing the five elements of nature. The temple also has a statue of Nandi, the bull that serves as Lord Shiva’s vehicle.
