11 Fun Things To Do In Charming Anne Arundel County

visit deale md

  • Destinations
  • United States

Rural Anne Arundel County in Maryland, which includes the maritime villages of Deale, Galesville, and Mayo, takes visitors back to a simpler time. The people, the pace of life, and the waterways, with their 533 miles of shoreline, comprise the heart of this charming destination.

There’s plenty to do in Annapolis , the county seat, but the rural and outlying cities provide a bounty of activities as well. Enjoy shopping, historical sites, water activities, ornamental gardens, and the rural countryside in Anne Arundel County.

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Maryland.

1. Walk The Trails At The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center

Research meets public education at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). Walk the trails to immerse yourself in nature and learn about the coastal ecosystems and how SERC research can lead to sustainability. In addition to 15 miles of protected shoreline, you’ll discover marshes, wetlands, and forests in the 2,650-acre site.

SERC programs are designed to emphasize the practices of science and to educate through hands-on learning experiences. Watch a science talk, discover nature during a science hike, take a guided hike or canoe expedition, learn about blue crabs, and more.

Pro Tip: Although the trails are currently closed, you can still take an interactive virtual field trip.

2. Spend A Day At Sandy Point State Park

Grab a picnic lunch and a fishing permit and head to Sandy Point State Park for a day of fishing or swimming on the mile-long public swimming beach. Enjoy views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge while swimming, or you can rent a boat at the marina and get onto the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. If you have your own kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard, there’s a small craft launch ramp available in addition to the 22 public boat ramps.

3. Hit The Farmers Markets For Local Bounty

Seven farmers markets (PDF) throughout the county offer market lovers the chance to load up on fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh-baked bread, cheese, and jams (perfect for a picnic at Sandy Point State Park!). I seek out the farmers markets in every area I visit because they’re an intimate way to meet local growers, sample what’s in season in the area, and support local farmers. Plus farmers markets are ideal places to get food that’s fresh and tasty.

4. Tour Historic London Town And The Gardens

Historic London Town is a “lost” colonial town and garden sanctuary located on the South River. Enjoy the scenic gardens, including the Woodland Gardens, which is filled with stunning dogwoods, magnolias, and camellias. There are also ornamental gardens with flowers such as crepe myrtles and hydrangeas. Located on 23 acres, the buildings include the circa 1760 National Historic Landmark William Brown House, the Lord Mayor’s Tenement, and a reconstructed carpenter’s shop. In 2019, Historic London Town and Gardens was designated as a Site of Memory Associated with the Slave Route. Apparently, at least eight slave ships arrived in London between 1708 and 1760, and hundreds (possibly thousands) of slaves were sold there.

Be sure and check out some of the unique events held at the site, such as Colonial Cocktails, which invites you to make and drink historic cocktails, such as Fish House Punch and Mint Julip. Or kids can take a punched tin workshop and learn about tin-punched lanterns and even make their own tin-punched (aluminum) plate. The variety of events presents great experiential ways to step back in time and learn about this historic period and place.

5. Hike At Quiet Waters Park

This 340-acre county park is a great place to hike the scenic paved trails, located between the South River and Harness Creek. Quiet Waters Park is one of eight regional parks you may want to visit for some outdoor time. The trail at Quiet Waters Park takes you on a 5.1-mile loop on what is considered an easy paved trail. If you want to exert yourself a bit more, there are numerous miles of unpaved offshoot trails to explore.

6. Take In A Live Show

The newly opened Live! Casino and Hotel , located in Hanover, is a 4,000-seat concert venue. Catch some of the best touring acts. In 2021, shows are planned with entertainers such as Jerry Seinfeld, Air Supply, and Patti Labelle.

After the show, visit the casino, the third-largest commercial casino in the U.S., or spend the night in the luxury hotel with 52 suites, a spa, fitness center, and fine dining.

7. Visit One Of The Top Three Shopping Attractions In The Nation

While you’re nearby, adjacent to Live! Casino and Hotel is the Arundel Mills Mall . Shop to your heart’s content at more than 200 stores in the 1.3-million-square-foot shopping and entertainment complex. The outlet mall has many of the stores you’d expect, such as Coach Factory Store, The Disney Store Outlet, Ralph Lauren Factory Store, and more, plus plenty of dining and entertainment options. There’s even a Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament where you can see the knights and wenches and watch medieval-style games with jousting and sword fighting while you eat dinner. Huzzah!

8. Tour An Operational Guinness Brewery

Just over the county line, take a tour at Guinness Open Gate Brewery and Barrell House in Halethorpe (a town in southern Baltimore County) to learn about the history of Guinness and the brewery, plus sample authentic Guinness. Located on the site of the old Calvert Distillery, which was originally the Maryland Distilling Company — the first Maryland distillery to open after Prohibition — the brewery opened in 2018. If unique, barrel-aged beers or a taste of Ireland are on your must-try list, be sure and stop by the brewery for a taste.

9. Dine At A Waterfront Restaurant

South County, as the locals refer to southern Anne Arundel County, is home to three noteworthy restaurants along the water: Pirates Cove in Galesville, Happy Harbor in Deale, and Skipper’s Pier, also in Deale.

Sit outside at the dock bar at Pirates Cove Restaurant and Dock Bar (weekends bring live entertainment on the dock) to enjoy the view. This is Maryland, so start with the Maryland crab soup and the beautiful beet salad — red beets, goat cheese, pecans, mandarin orange slices, and greens, all tossed in a vinaigrette dressing. Or, if you’re really craving blue crab, order the Crab Imperial. You’ll get fresh blue crab alongside a baked potato and vegetables. In addition to the dock bar, there’s an inn and marina on-site if you’d like to stay overnight.

At Happy Harbor , try one of their seafood baskets — clam, fish and chips, shrimp, and oyster are a few favorites. My personal favorite is the hand-breaded and then fried oysters served with french fries and coleslaw.

The third waterfront option, Skipper’s Pier , delivers seafood delights created by co-owner and executive chef Jessica Rosage. Taste a variety of Southern flavors with The Southern Charmer Snack Board. It’s loaded with pimento cheese spread, Cajun red pepper hummus, tasso ham, vegetables, pickles, candied pecans, and olives, all served with everything crackers. There’s a luscious cream of crab soup and a lighter vegetable crab soup. Or go for the Deale’s Dynamic Duo, a mix of the two soups topped with even more crab.

10. Bicycle The Baltimore And Annapolis Bike Trail

While riding the train near Baltimore, I wound up chatting with three gentlemen in their 60s. They were dressed in riding gear and backpacks and had their bicycles on the train. They were enthusiastically planning the bicycle trip they were about to begin. While I don’t remember which trail they had planned to tour, I do remember them commenting that the area is perfect for bicycling and that there are lovely trails in the area.

The Baltimore and Annapolis bike trail follows the route of the old Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad for 13.3 miles. The trail is paved, and you’ll find historical markers along the route teaching you about the area.

Pro Tip: Rent a bicycle if you don’t have one with you, or enjoy walking the trail, which is wheelchair accessible.

11. Watch Airplanes Land At The Airport

Airplane enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the Thomas Dixon Aircraft Observation Area , where you can relax and watch the planes land and take off from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). There’s a playground for the kids and also the BWI Trail , a 12.5-mile loop trail to walk or bicycle. The trail takes you around the entire airport, allowing for views of the airplanes from all angles.

Deal Island Hero Image

Deal Island

Located in Western Somerset County on the Tangier Sound, the island is three miles long and one mile wide with two villages, Wenona at one end and Deal Island at the other.  Income on the island was, and still is mainly derived from working the water.  The small harbor in Wenona is the home port of several of the last remaining working Skipjacks, the sailing vessels that still dredge for oysters in the bay.  For over 50 years the Annual Skipjack Races & Festival has been held in Deal Island waters, paying homage to the graceful boats of the bay with parades, boat docking contest, and a race of the historic skipjacks themselves.  Make time to visit the Skipjack Museum in Chance, it’s worth the stop.

The Best of the Bay

Weekends on the Water: Deale, Maryland

visit deale md

Hit the beach at Herrington Harbor South.

Join CBM for a trip to Deale, Maryland. It may be one of the best-kept secret boating locations on the Bay with plenty of opportunities for docking and dining.

  • Located 15 miles south of Annapolis and 30 miles north of Solomons
  • Established in 1655
  • Home to the largest amount of deep-water, protected boat slips on the Bay

What Makes It Unique

visit deale md

Herring Bay is the location of choice for boaters who live in the Washington D.C. area. Once you get there, you are smack in the middle of the Bay, which means easy trips to Eastern Bay and St. Michaels as well as the Choptank River and Oxford or Cambridge. And of course, all those lovely fishing grounds will be right there, which makes Herring Bay a convenient destination as well as a central starting point. A down-home vibe and array of quirky dock bars makes it great place to spend a weekend as well.

Getting There

The channel entrance into Herrington South’s basin is straightforward and deep, but on the other end, the short section of channel from the Rockhold Creek breakwater to markers 8 and 9 is narrow and can be crowded on weekends and shallow in spots to about 5 or 6 feet at dead low tide. At markers 12 and 13, the channel for Herrington North splits to port while the main channel continues north then northeast to reach all the other marinas and the dock bars.

Coming up Rockhold Creek channel, you’ll find Skipper’s Pier Restaurant and Dock Bar to starboard, followed by Paradise Marina to starboard and then Shipwright Harbor Marina’s extensive docks to port. Rockhold Creek Marina is past that to port, and you continue on to Happy Harbor restaurant. Past the Deale Road Bridge, which has a vertical clearance  of 14 feet, lies Harbour Cove Marina, a popular location for smaller boats with shallower drafts, and finally Hidden Harbour, home to the Anchored Inn.

To get to southern Anne Arundel County, take Rt. 2 south from Annapolis, or take Rt. 4 east from Washington D.C., and connect with SR 258 for Deale or S.R. 261 for Herrington Harbour South. It’s about an hour, on a good day, from downtown or Baltimore, and about two hours if you’re driving up from Richmond.

visit deale md

Marina Basics

If you are looking for a family-friendly, get-away-from-it-all weekend, you may want to head directly for Herrington Harbour South. Here, you’ll have easy access to the Bay from the comfort of its entirely protected boat basin, with 600 slips. There is an excellent restaurant, your own sandy beach and swimming pool, an inn and takeout food, beer and wine at Chesapeake Market & Deli. On the other hand, Herrington North has fixed and floating docks accommodating up to 70 feet, three lounges, a saltwater pool and jacuzzi, complimentary kayak and bike rentals, and easy proximity to classic hangouts in nearby Deale.

If you bear right coming up Rockhold Creek and take a slip at Shipwright Harbor Marina, you can find plenty to make you happy, including dingy or water-taxi access to the local favorites Skipper’s Pier Restaurant & Dock Bar, plus a saltwater pool, bikes and kayaks.

Above the Deale Road Bridge, which has a vertical clearance of 14 feet, you’ll find two more good options, especially if you are trailering your boat in. Harbour Cove Marina has wet and dry slips, a pool and clubhouse and it’s within walking distance to restaurants and a hardware store. Just beyond, Hidden Harbour Marina offers slips, a playground for kids, the Boathouse Bar for adults and the popular Anchored Inn. Globally famous Weaver Boats, which builds exquisite sportfishing yachts, is located just next door.

visit deale md

Staying on Land

The Inn at Herrington Harbour South is a full-service, family-friendly resort, built in the 1950s but updated with comfy rooms and suites with perks like hot tubs and full kitchens. Enjoy the seasonal waterfront pool and beach, two dining options (Ketch 22 and the take-out Chesapeake Market & Deli) and a landscaped waterfront garden that is a popular spot for weddings.

Located in Deale, the Anchored Inn at Hidden Harbour opened in 2016 and welcomes you and your pet to enjoy 16 comfy rooms, free parking and seasonal outdoor pool, plus easy access to the Boathouse bar and a few local shops.

Exploring by Water

If you are bringing a canoe or kayak, you’ll find a number of places to launch, including the beach at Herrington South and most of the marinas on Rockhold Creek. Or rent double kayaks, SUPs or paddle boats from Chesapeake Paddle Sports, which also offers guided sunset eco tours. You can easily explore Herring Bay and Rockhold Creek, which meanders peacefully above the Deale Road Bridge for about two miles, and also take a turn down adjacent Tracy’s Creek, which runs for about a mile above the S.R. 256 Bridge north of Herrington Harbour North.

Fishing is big business in Deale, with more than 40 charters coming in and out. Last Hurrah, Lucky Strike and Ebb Tide are three that we like, but there are plenty more.

Exploring by Land

Deale doesn’t have a proper downtown; it’s more of a collection of businesses and homes that run along Rockhold Creek, including the adjacent community of Tracey’s Landing. Look for treasures at Second Wind Consignments, A Vintage Deale and Blue Heron Boutique. Hit West Marine for supplies or get prepped for fishing at Tri-State Marine Tackle & Gifts.

Bar Crawling

visit deale md

This port is home to four well-loved dock bars, accessible by dinghy, kayak, car or bike—whatever you have. Skipper’s Pier Restaurant & Dock Bar is the first thing you’ll find on entering Rockhold Creek, on the north end of the bay. Owners Dave and Jessica Rosage set Skipper’s apart from your average dock-and-dine facility with regional musts plus unexpected dishes like rockfish Reuben and seafood pot pie. If you love dive bars (and we do!), you’ll love the famous Happy Harbor restaurant, which has been serving local watermen, residents and visitors since 1933. You can get everything here from cold beer and fried pickles and to steamed clams and cheeseburgers, best enjoyed on the deck as you watch the charter boats come and go. Dockside Restaurant and Bar at Herrington North has a big covered patio and waiting area on the side lawn, while the Boat House at Anchored Inn serves up crushes, beer and wine from their boat-turned-bar, set under a weathered wooden boat house. Happy Harbor is open from 8 a.m. til midnight (2 a.m. Saturdays); the rest close up earlier.

Want to take to bring the bar with you? Bring five of your friends along for a two-hour trek on Cruisin’ Tikis. These round floating tiki bars provide a captain, bamboo bar and thatched-roof shade; you bring along the bevvies, snacks and the floaty toys for when you need to jump in and cool off.

South County Café has the best breakfasts around, served until 11 a.m. daily, followed by lunch specials like wraps and sliders. Homemade treats are served all day from the onsite bakery.

Located at Herrington Harbour South, Ketch 22 is a fantastic restaurant owned by the same team that runs The Point in Arnold (voted Best Crab House in CBM’s 2022 Best of the Bay). Their inspired menu of Chesapeake cuisine includes crab soups and cakes, tacos, fish ’n’ chips and steak frites.

Great Blue Heron in wetland

Expanses of tidal marsh, frequently broken by open water, characterize most of the habitat of this WMA. The 13,000 acre property also contains forested wetlands and a 2,800-acre man-made pond or "impoundment." The water insects and crustaceans, as well as the abundance of wigeongrass, horned pondweed and other favorite waterfowl foods makes Deal Island one of the best places in Maryland to watch, photograph and hunt ducks and geese.

What To See

Ducks! Geese! Swans! Waterfowl are the featured performers on Deal Island. Many, many species of waterfowl, in all their colorful splendor, nest, feed and migrate through this area. Deal Island also supports one of the largest concentrations in the state of herons, egrets and ibis. One of Maryland's only breeding population of black-necked stilts thrive here. The rare Eurasian wigeon, a type of duck, is frequently seen in the large flocks of American wigeon that spend the winter in Maryland.

Waterfowl are the primary attraction for hunters in Deal Island. No other place in Maryland can boast the chance to see and hunt such large numbers of uncommon ducks like wigeons, pintails, gadwalls, green and blue-winged teal and shovelers in addition to the expected black ducks, mallards, scaup and Canada geese. Crabbing and saltwater fishing are also excellent. Trapping is offered by yearly lease. Hikers and all-terrain bicyclists will enjoy the trail around the marsh impoundment, watching the resting waterfowl or capturing them on film. A primitive camping area is available for overnight stays. Mosquitoes and other biting insects are common from spring through early fall. Bring insect repellent, minimize exposed skin and wear light-colored clothing. Permits are required to hunt the impoundment on certain days.

Area Regulations

  • Use of the Deal Island WMA is generally permitted seven days a week throughout the year.
  • Hunting is allowed in accordance with open seasons and shooting hours, unless otherwise noted.
  • All State and Federal Hunting Laws and Regulations are applicable.
  • Waterfowl hunting in the impoundment has specific regulations including permit requirements for certain days and open and closure dates. For information and permit application click here or call the office listed below.
  • The southeastern corner of the impoundment, totaling 800 acres, is designated as a waterfowl refuge and is closed to hunting.
  • Trapping is by permit only.
  • Dove hunting is restricted to certain days and shooting hours.
  • No motorized vehicles are allowed.

Special Areas

  • A 2,800-acre impoundment has been created in the tidal wetlands (small jon boat, canoe, kayak, or chest waders are recommended).
  • 3,426 acres of Deal Island WMA has been designated part of the MD National Estuarine Research Reserve System.
  • A primitive camping area is located off of Riley Robert Road (contact the office below for more information).

Non-hunting Users Guide

  • Non-hunting visitors are welcome.
  • Be aware of open hunting seasons and visit accordingly.
  • Season dates available in newspapers, on the Internet, and at some area stores.
  • Trails are maintained and suitable for hiking, nature photography, birding, hunting and other recreational activities, but are not actively marked.

Site Management Goals

  • The agricultural fields are planted with crops to provide habitat and winter food for upland wildlife species.
  • An impoundment has been created and is managed to provide habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, and aquatic mammals.
  • Certain fields are managed dove hunting areas.
  • Riparian areas have been planted with trees and grasses to create riparian buffers for water quality and wildlife habitat benefits.
  • Some fields have been planted to native warm season grasses, cool season grasses and/or been left fallow to provide habitat for ground nesting wildlife species.
  • A peregrine falcon nests on a tower that has been erected as part of the Eastern Peregrine Falcon Recovery Plan.

While the area contains a small island, most of this WMA is located on the mainland. From U.S. Route 13, take MD 363 west from Princess Anne about 11 miles to Deal Island WMA. Marked parking areas located off Deal Island, Riley Robert, and Drawbridge Roads. Boat access via St. Peters Creek, Dames Quarter Creek, Deal Island, Wenona, Big Sound Creek, and North & South Impoundment public boat ramps. For additional information, contact the Wellington Wildlife Office at (410) 651-2065.

This area is a part of Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources public land system and is managed by the Wildlife and Heritage Service. The primary mission of the WMA system is to conserve and enhance wildlife populations and their respective habitats as well as to provide public recreational use of the State’s wildlife resources.

Eighty-five percent of the funding for Maryland's state wildlife programs comes from hunting license fees and a federal excise tax on sport hunting devices and ammunition. The federal aid funds are derived from the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration (or Pittman-Robertson) Fund, which sportsmen and women have been contributing to since 1937. Each state receives a share of the funds, which is administered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service; these funds are used for wildlife conservation and hunter education programs, including the management of the WMA system.

Other sources of funds for land acquisition include Program Open Space Funding for Maryland's State and local parks and conservation areas, provided through The Department of Natural Resources' Program Open Space . Established in 1969, Program Open Space symbolizes Maryland's long-term commitment to conserving natural resources while providing exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities.

Thanksgiving Pie Run

What goes with Thanksgiving better than hot pies? Hot rods! That’s what the creator of the South County Cafe’s Pie Run was thinking when he decided to gather the local community around these two things on Thanksgiving morning. John knew that during Thanksgiving, you can have a lot on your plate. So, why not start your Thanksgiving morning in a unique way that helps take care of one of the most important responsibilities? Pie! For the past 24 years, South County Cafe in Deale, MD has been hosting an event known as the Thanksgiving Pie Run. During this event, one can pre-order a house-baked thanksgiving pie, spend the morning with your family, and take some time checking out a wide variety of awesome hot rods brought by patrons of the event.

Thanksgiving Pie Run

This event began 25 years ago at the West River Market in Galesville. The owner, John created the event to give his family and other families an opportunity to do something out of the house during the morning. It was also a way for the “non-essential” people to give those in the kitchen room to prepare the feast that will take place later in the day. They had the idea to have a pie sale and encourage people to bring their hot rods. When John moved to South County Cafe, the event moved with him. Since its inception, it has grown into a community-wide event drawing a crowd that can reach 1,300 people.

Thanksgiving Pie Run

South County Cafe is a small cafe known for its fresh seafood and baked goods. Using decades-old recipes brought to life with fresh ingredients, this local joint brings the rustic small-town vibe alive. The walls are lined with decor that is reminiscent of the region’s relationship with the Chesapeake watershed. Open Monday through Thursday 7am-8pm, Friday through Saturday 7am-9pm, and Sunday 7am-6pm. Serving up breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the Cafe has something for everyone!

Thanksgiving Pie Run

The pies are pre-ordered through the Cafe and come in any flavor you can imagine! From Rum Pecan to Peach, from Mincemeat to Chocolate Meringue. While all the fun will be taking place on Thanksgiving Thursday, you can pick them up starting Monday. In any given year, the Cafe will be handing out 2,000 pies. While I have not had one myself, the photos look tantalizing.

The entire community is taken over by this event. Streets in all of the surrounding residential areas are lined with parked cars of the Pie Runners. The Pie Run has become such a fixture that other local businesses have been figuring out how they can get involved. People begin lining up at 6:30 for the 7 am start time. Most of the hot rods, around 500, will be parked in the parking lot of the church across the street, so you can easily check them out with your family and friends.

Thanksgiving Pie Run

While at the event you can also enjoy some breakfast! Either from the Cafe itself, which will be open 7-12, serving all of your breakfast favorites or from the Galley food truck! While the food truck, which typically operates out of the Boathouse at the Anchored Inn, normally serves a wide variety of yummy eats, during this event they will be serving up breakfast sandwiches. You will also be able to enjoy some local live music from John Luskey from 8-12. He is very popular in the Deale area and plays a wide variety of music from country to alternative rock.

Thanksgiving Pie Run

Make sure to order your pie today and make the arrangements for you and your loved ones to get on down to South County Cafe this Thanksgiving! Bring home a pie, show off your hot rod, and have a great time—all before you sit down for the main event!

Selection process for democratic convention delegates irks some lawmakers.

visit deale md

Del. Robbyn Lewis (D-Baltimore City) has never been to a Democratic National Convention before.

So when the call came for candidates interested in serving as delegates to this summer’s convention in Chicago, Lewis went to the State Board of Elections office and signed up to run in the May 14 Democratic primary as a delegate from the 7th congressional district pledged to President Biden.

“I never applied before,” she said. “It sounded interesting and fun.”

A few weeks later, however, Lewis was surprised and disappointed to learn that the Maryland Democratic Party had rejected her candidacy and that her name would not be appearing on the primary ballot as a Biden delegate.

She wasn’t alone. Seven other state lawmakers who had filed candidacy papers to become convention delegates for Biden saw their bids declined: state Sen. Ron Watson (D-Prince George’s) and Dels. Tiffany T. Alston (D-Prince George’s), Harry Bhandari (D-Baltimore County), Lorig Charkoudian (D-Montgomery), Kenneth Kerr (D-Frederick), Jeffrie E. Long Jr. (D-Prince George’s and Calvert) and Courtney Watson (D-Howard). Several other current or former officeholders and party activists and donors were also informed that their names would not appear on the ballot as Biden delegates.

Most were just as surprised and confused as Lewis.

“I didn’t know the criteria,” Sen. Watson said. “It was my understanding that it goes to the voters.”

Welcome to the complicated and delicate world of Democratic convention delegate selection.

“It’s more art than science,” said Sen. Shelly Hettleman (D-Baltimore County), who is a party-sanctioned candidate for convention delegate this year but has been turned down in the past.

In years when there’s isn’t a Democratic president running for reelection, and there are multiple candidates seeking the White House nomination, it’s much more of a free-for-all. Delegate candidates run as delegates pledged to various presidential contenders. Their ability to get to be convention delegates largely depends on the performance of the presidential candidates in the primary.

But when an incumbent is running for reelection, party leaders have much tighter control. On top of that, convention delegates from all 50 states must have perfect gender balance. And the party has other arcane rules regarding delegate selection — each of which present unique challenges in each of Maryland’s eight congressional districts, where many of the delegates are selected from.

“Our party has robust goals to make sure our delegate are reflective of our Maryland Democratic Party,” said Ken Ulman, the state party chair. “So we have goals in multiple categories that we work hard to achieve.”

In other words, while dozens of wannabe delegates went to the Board of Elections in the hopes of being on the primary ballot to be convention delegates this year, it was inevitable that many weren’t going to be chosen and are now officially designated on the Board of Elections website as “not authorized,” meaning they won’t appear on the ballot.

Maryland is sending 106 delegates to the Democratic convention this summer, and there are three ways to wind up as Free States delegates. Twenty-two slots automatically go to party leaders — like Gov. Wes Moore (D) and other statewide elected officials, members of the state’s congressional delegation, Ulman, elected members of the Democratic National Committee, and a few others.

Twenty-one more will be selected at-large by the Maryland Democratic Central Committee on June 8, three weeks after the May primary. People who want to fill those slots need to notify the party of their interest in late May.

The bulk of the delegates, 63, will be elected by congressional district in the primary. Because Biden is essentially running unchallenged for the Democratic nomination, that gives party leaders leeway to select who they want for the president’s slate — within the boundaries of the party’s diversity rules.

About 100 people went to the Board of Elections in Annapolis to sign up for these 63 slots, Ulman said, and he worked with the Biden campaign and Moore and the governor’s political lieutenants to winnow the names.

It wasn’t easy, he said. “But the bottom line is, we’re thrilled that so many people want to become convention delegates and support President Biden and Vice President Harris. It’s a good problem to have.”

Still, the decision was disappointing to many lawmakers, and some said they weren’t sure if they were going to apply for the at-large vacancies after primary.

“I’m on the fence about going now,” said Del. Watson. “I wanted to go represent my district.”

Still, Watson, who served as a campaign coordinator in Maryland for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential run — and is not related to Ron Watson — said she understood the challenges state party leaders faced.

“They pulled the people for different reasons — they had to meet different objectives,” she said.

In most congressional districts, Maryland Democratic voters will see the names of the officially sanctioned Biden delegates and, in some cases, candidates running as uncommitted delegates, on the primary ballot. A smaller number are running to be delegates for U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), who suspended his White House campaign, and Marianne Williamson, the New Age author.

But the results are largely a foregone conclusion, with Biden expected to run up huge margins in the primary in all eight congressional districts.

One thing that’s noteworthy is that several of the brighter lights of the Moore administration are running as official Biden delegates, even in districts where elected officials were turned down. The list includes, in the 3rd congressional district, Dylan Behler, director of legislative and constituent services at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, who doubles as chair of the Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee; Matthew Verghese, who heads the state’s federal government relations office; and Lucinda Ware, a deputy chief of staff to Moore.

In the 4th District, Mollie Byron, who is Moore’s intergovernmental relations director, is running as a Biden delegate; so is Tisha Edwards, the governor’s appointments secretary, in the 7th District; and Eric Luedtke, head of the legislative affairs office, in the 8th District.

Lewis said she is tempted to try to become a delegate in the next round of applications, but isn’t entirely sure.

“I’m a good Democrat,” she said. “I want to support my party too.”

Convenience store chain with hundreds of outlets in 6 states hit with discrimination lawsuit

The Sheetz convenience store chain has been hit with a lawsuit by federal officials who allege the company discriminated against minority job applicants.

Sheetz Inc., which operates more than 700 stores in six states, discriminated against Black, Native American and multiracial job seekers by automatically weeding out applicants whom the company deemed to have failed a criminal background check, according to U.S. officials.

President Joe Biden stopped by a Sheetz for snacks this week while campaigning in Pennsylvania.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed suit in Baltimore against Altoona, Pennsylvania-based Sheetz and two subsidary companies, alleging the chain’s longstanding hiring practices have a disproportionate impact on minority applicants and thus run afoul of federal civil rights law.

Sheetz said Thursday that it “does not tolerate discrimination of any kind.”

“Diversity and inclusion are essential parts of who we are. We take these allegations seriously. We have attempted to work with the EEOC for nearly eight years to find common ground and resolve this dispute,” company spokesperson Nick Ruffner said in a statement.

(AP Photo/John Hanna, File)

The privately held, family-run company has more than 23,000 employees and operates convenience stores and gas stations in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court on Wednesday, the day Biden stopped at a Sheetz market on a western Pennsylvania campaign swing , buying snacks, posing for photos and chatting up patrons and employees.

Federal officials said they do not allege Sheetz was motivated by racial animus, but take issue with the way the chain uses criminal background checks to screen job seekers. The company was sued under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits workplace discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion and national origin.

“Federal law mandates that employment practices causing a disparate impact because of race or other protected classifications must be shown by the employer to be necessary to ensure the safe and efficient performance of the particular jobs at issue,” EEOC attorney Debra M. Lawrence said in a statement.

“Even when such necessity is proven, the practice remains unlawful if there is an alternative practice available that is comparably effective in achieving the employer’s goals but causes less discriminatory effect,” Lawrence said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many job applicants have been affected, but the agency said Sheetz’s unlawful hiring practices date to at least 2015.

The EEOC, an independent agency that enforces federal laws against workplace discrimination, is seeking to force Sheetz to offer jobs to applicants who were unlawfully denied employment and to provide back pay, retroactive seniority and other benefits.

The EEOC began its probe of the convenience store chain after two job applicants filed complaints alleging employment discrimination.

The agency found that Black job applicants were deemed to have failed the company’s criminal history screening and were denied employment at a rate of 14.5%, while multiracial job seekers were turned away 13.5% of the time and Native Americans were denied at a rate of 13%.

By contrast, fewer than 8% of white applicants were refused employment because of a failed criminal background check, the EEOC’s lawsuit said.

The EEOC notified Sheetz in 2022 that it was likely violating civil rights law, but the agency said its efforts to mediate a settlement failed, prompting this week’s lawsuit.
