Guests Can Once Again Visit Gorilla Troop at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Following SARS-CoV-2 Recovery

Visiting the western lowland gorilla troop at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a tradition for many at the world-famous wildlife sanctuary—and starting today (Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021), guests will once again have the opportunity to connect with these primates, and learn ways they can help to save this important species.

Guest access to see the gorillas had been limited over the last month after several troop members were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This morning, guests had the opportunity to see the eight-member troop eating, drinking and interacting with one another—having fully recovered, thanks to the incredible work of wildlife care professionals, the veterinary team and collaborations with a wide array of colleagues and partners who ensured that the highest standard of care was given to the affected gorillas.

“We’re so grateful for the outpouring concern and support we’ve received while the troop safely recovered,” said Lisa Peterson, executive director of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “We’re thrilled to share the joy that this beloved troop brings to our community and to our guests.”

Despite team members adhering to all recommended biosecurity precautions, several members of the Safari Park gorilla troop tested positive for the virus on Jan. 11. The gorillas were infected with the B.1.429 lineage of the coronavirus, which has been prevalent in California and may be more contagious than other strains. The entire troop remained under close observation following the diagnosis, when some gorillas showed symptoms including mild coughing, congestion, nasal discharge and intermittent lethargy.

San Diego Zoo Global joined forces with multiple local, state and national leaders in the medical, scientific, zoological and public health communities to provide the best possible care for the gorilla troop. These colleagues include professionals from San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, UC San Diego Health, Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego, the Scripps Research Institute, California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, California Department of Food and Agriculture, California Department of Public Health, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Laboratories, USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine, The Great Ape Heart Project based at Zoo Atlanta and Chicago Zoological Society Radiology Consulting Service.

“There’s a such a warm camaraderie felt with our colleagues as we continue to share knowledge,” said Peterson. “We’re incredibly thankful for the collaboration across various areas of expertise to ensure the best health for our troop and a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all living things.”

While the sharing of information and what was learned from this experience has already begun among wildlife care professionals at over 200 zoos worldwide, San Diego Zoo Global is committed to providing resources from occurrences at its sanctuaries in San Diego to conservation organizations around the world. Documentation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in gorillas at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park may help provide important information regarding scientific understanding of the virus and its effects on great apes. Also, information learned about curbing zoonotic disease transmission, biosecurity protocols for wildlife in managed care and field settings, and its implications will be vital to ensuring optimal health outcomes for humans and wildlife globally.

Guests can visit the gorilla troop at their home in the Safari Park’s Gorilla Forest. The Safari Park is currently open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For more information, visit SDZSafariPark.org

As a leader in conservation, the work of San Diego Zoo Global includes on-site wildlife conservation efforts (representing both plants and animals) at the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, as well as international field programs on six continents. The work of these entities is made accessible to over 1 billion people annually, reaching 150 countries via news media, social media, our websites and the San Diego Zoo Kids network in children’s hospitals in 13 countries. The work of San Diego Zoo Global is made possible with support from our incredible donors committed to saving wildlife around the globe.

Most of our Safaris at the Safari Park and other Special Experiences at both parks are uniquely designed to get you closer to wildlife!

There really isn't any special time that more wildlife are in view, although many of our animals are early risers and may be a bit more active in the morning. In our concern for the many endangered species that we house at our facilities, we have built habitats that mimic natural environments. Like natural environments, these areas give the animals plenty of room to hide. We have found the ability to hide is important to the well-being of many species.

Wildlife may be taken off public view for a variety of reasons including environmental conditions, health issues, and behavioral concerns. In addition, many of our habitats are designed to allow animals to remove themselves from visitor view at any time. For these reasons, it is not always possible to predict or note these exceptions before the fact. Refunds or exchanges are not possible in cases of inclement weather or habitat closure.  A daily listing of changes or closures can be found at the main entrance of both parks. Please check upon arrival.

No. Pets, comfort animals, and emotional support animals are not permitted at the Zoo or Safari Park. Because we house significant populations of rare and endangered species, both the Zoo and the Safari Park are considered to be quarantined facilities. State and federal regulations for such facilities do not allow for the access of pets, comfort animals, or emotional support animals accompanying guests to these facilities.

We do not offer kennel service at either park.  Contact Us so we may provide a list of local kennels.

Our facilities are open every day of the year, including ALL holidays, rain or shine!

Depending on the extent of rain, some animals (primates, specifically) may choose to go into their off-view areas, although many animals seem unaffected by rain. Animals may be taken off public view for a variety of reasons, including environmental conditions, health issues, and behavioral concerns. In addition, many of our habitats are designed to allow animals to remove themselves from visitor view at any time.  For these reasons, it is not always possible to predict or note these exceptions before the fact.

While we work hard to provide an exceptional guest experience, occasionally habitats, tours, restaurants, transportation, entertainment, or services change or close without notice and without liability due to refurbishing, capacity, weather or special events. A daily listing of changes or closures can be found at the main entrance of both parks. Please check upon arrival.

No. The Safari Park is and always has been a walk-through sanctuary in which members and guests can purchase optional guided Safari tours to enhance their visits and get closer to animals. Please see our Safari Tours tab on the Park's home page for more information about these exciting tours and programs!

Occasionally, nostalgic visitors confuse the Safari Park with an unaffiliated, drive-through animal attraction bearing a similar name that was once located 77 miles north of the Safari Park in the Irvine/Laguna Hills area. That attraction operated from 1970 to 1984. The site was then repurposed and spent 25 years as a water park before becoming what is now a community of upscale apartment homes.

Hours vary throughout the year.

  • For current San Diego Zoo hours, click here .
  • For San Diego Zoo Safari Park hours, click here .

The Zoo and Safari Park are approximately 35 miles apart from each other. The drive time between the two parks is about 45 minutes to one hour, depending on traffic and other factors. The Zoo is located in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego, at 2920 Zoo Drive, San Diego, CA 92108. The Safari Park is located at 15500 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido, California 92027.

  • Further directions for the San Diego Zoo can be found here.
  • Directions for the Safari Park are here.

San Diego Zoo: The quickest way to the Zoo from the San Diego International Airport is by taxi or ride share, an 11-minute, 5-mile ride. Amtrak railway service (800-872-7245) travels up and down the coast between Los Angeles and downtown San Diego.  The #7 bus stops at the Zoo. Information about public bus transportation can be found on the web at www.sdcommute.com or by calling 619-233-3004. Useful information can be obtained from the San Diego Visitor Center, 619-236-1242.

Safari Park: Amtrak railway service (800-872-7245) travels up and down the coast between Los Angeles and downtown San Diego, stopping in Oceanside. From Oceanside, a light rail service called the Sprinter travels to Escondido, approximately 22 miles. Once you arrive at the downtown Escondido Transit Center via the Sprinter, the quickest way to the Safari Park is by taxi or ride share, an 11-minute, 7-mile ride. You can find more information about the Sprinter on the web or by calling 760-967-2001.

There is one public bus that stops at the Safari Park; however, depending upon your departure point, connecting schedules may mean a travel time of approximately 25 minutes from the Escondido Transit Center and up to 3 hours each way from San Diego. Bus service is very limited on weekends and holidays. Information about public bus transportation can be found on the web at www.sdcommute.com or by calling 619-233-3004. Overall, the easiest way to reach the Safari Park is by car. Useful transportation information can be obtained from the Escondido Visitor Center, (760) 839-4777.

It's possible, but we don't recommend it.  We recommend spending a minimum of four to six hours to see some of the Zoo and a minimum of four to six hours at each park to experience the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park. The drive time between the two parks is about 45 minutes to one hour, depending on traffic and other factors.

Since there is so much to see and experience at our parks, and to get the most from an unhurried visit, we recommend planning a multi-day visit. Because each park requires a separate admission ticket, there are several multi-day ticket options that allow you to enjoy both parks at a relaxed pace!

Safari Park guests should keep their parking receipts to avoid having to pay twice for same-day parking when leaving the parking lot for and returning from smoke breaks.

Getting Involved

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is a not-for-profit organization that works to conserve endangered species through management plans for our collections and for individual species. We are unable to accept animal or plant donations, because to do so would mean that we would have less room for the species with which we are currently working.

All potential products for every area have to go through San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's Purchasing Department. Due to the large number of requests we receive, we ask that all inquiries to our buyers’ office be made in writing. You may send a cover letter along with a prospectus or a catalog to: Purchasing Department, San Diego Zoo, P.O. Box 120551, San Diego, CA 92112. Please understand that due to the large volume of inquiries received, this office cannot personally respond to each request.  A representative of this office will respond if an inquiry shows promise.

The San Diego Zoo’s policies require that all media requests be screened by our Public Relations office. Media are asked to contact 619-685-3291 or email [email protected] for assistance.

As you can imagine, we receive hundreds of emails each week from guests requesting an interview with our wildlife care specialists. We are unable to accommodate all such requests as this would take our wildlife care staff away from their primary responsibilities to the animals in their care. Information about animal species may be found on our San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Animals & Plants website .

The Zoo is located adjacent to downtown’s Balboa Park. San Diego Zoo 2920 Zoo Drive San Diego CA 92101 619-231-1515

A "pending hold" is a banking industry practice of authorizing electronic transactions made with a debit or credit card and holding this balance as unavailable either until the merchant clears the transaction (also called "settlement") or the hold "drops off."

More than one hold can appear on the account when a guest inadvertently charges a card multiple times during the same transaction (usually by repeatedly clicking on "Submit Order"). Basically, each time a debit or credit card number is submitted, it is transmitted as an electronic inquiry to determine if funds are available to cover the potential transaction. The bank automatically places a hold on the amount(s) and retains the funds until the merchant clears or "settles" the transaction, usually at the close of business each day. The issuing bank still has your money (which is why it is "pending"), and these holds usually drop off after one to three business days, depending on the issuing bank's policy.

Whenever possible, no earlier than 24 hours after the initial transaction and at the issuing bank's request on letterhead, we are happy to assist in resolving "pending hold" issues. It's important to note that while a request to release a hold can be made, not all banks will honor one. And even if they do, the release of funds may not be instant. Ultimately, merchants (such as the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park) do not have the ability to release an authorization hold; the only entity that can do so is the issuing card's bank.

If a refund is approved, it may take up to 1–2 weeks to receive your refund, depending upon your bank's refund processing timeline.

Lion Country Safari on 'best zoos' list months after ranking in USA TODAY readers choice awards

See animals from 6 continents while riding in your car with the ac. lion country safari is the largest park in florida with a safari-style experience..

  • "Recent travelers raved about the opportunity to see ostriches, lions, zebras and rhinos, with many noting the VIP tour is worth it."
  • "Guests might spot storks, wildebeest and impalas on the Serengeti Plains, observe a pride of lions in Gorongosa Reserve or see giraffes and endangered rhinos in Hwange National Park."

Lion Country Safari, we hear you roar.

Months after Lion Country Safari ranked No. 8 on USA TODAY's 10 Best Readers Choice Awards , the attraction made U.S. News and World Report's list of "26 Best Zoos in the U.S " for 2023. Here are some things to know about Lion Country Safari, what it offers and why it's getting national attention.

U.S. News and World Report picks Lion Country Safari for 'Best Zoos in the U.S.' list

In honor of summer vacation, travel and family-friendly things to do , U.S. News and World Report picked their favorite zoos for summer 2023: "While not all zoos are created equal, the editors at U.S. News used an extensive research process to create this list of the top zoos in the country. All the destinations receive favorable traveler reviews on multiple websites, are accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums — an organization focused on the well-being and care of animals — and have been evaluated by experienced veterinarians and animal care specialists."

Here's what U.S. News and World Report said about Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee: "Set on 320 acres and providing the opportunity to see creatures from six continents while riding in your air-conditioned vehicle, Lion Country Safari is the largest park in Florida with this safari-style experience. Recent travelers raved about the opportunity to see ostriches, lions, zebras and rhinos, with many noting the VIP tour is worth it. In addition to providing a greater understanding of these animals, the facility is involved in Special Survival Plan programs for threatened species like rhinos. Visitors can go on a safari experience, meander through the adventure park and spend the night at the on-site KOA campground. What other zoos made the '26 Best Zoos in the U.S.' list?

The editors at U.S. News and World Report also selected the St. Louis Zoo, San Diego Zoo and Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida, for its list of "26 Best Zoos in the U.S." feature.

Here's what the publication said about the other Florida zoo on this list: "The Brevard Zoo, which sits roughly 60 miles southeast of Orlando's theme parks and about 30 miles southwest of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, offers fun and educational activities in a manageable setting. Families can peruse the open-air exhibits to see alligators, giraffes and zebras. Recent visitors say the habitats were impressive, there was ample shade, and the zip lining experience was a must try. For a unique zoo adventure , join a guided kayak tour to see the rhinos and lemurs of Expedition Africa from the water or board the train to see camels, antelope and African cattle. What's more, the zoo is focused on conservation efforts to protect the local ecosystem with a sea turtle healing center and the building of living shorelines."

Here's the full list, in no particular order:

  • Oakland Zoo in Oakland, California
  • Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C.
  • Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, Alaska
  • St. Louis Zoo in St. Louis, Missouri
  • Fort Worth Zoo in Fort Worth, Texas

Lion Country Safari ranks No. 8 in USA TODAY 10 Best poll

In March, Lion Country Safari was voted among the Top 10 safari parks in North America, according to USA TODAY 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for 2023.

Here's what USA TODAY's 10 Best editors said about Lion Country Safari: "Palm Beach may be far away from the wilds of Africa, but it’s also home to Florida’s first and largest drive-through safari, the AZA-accredited Lion Country Safari. Established in 1967, this safari park invites visitors to observe and interact with nearly 1,000 animals divided between seven sections. Guests might spot storks, wildebeest and impalas on the Serengeti Plains, observe a pride of lions in Gorongosa Reserve or see giraffes and endangered rhinos in Hwange National Park."

What animals will I see at Lion Country Safari? What are the hours, cost of admission?

Lion Country Safari, 2003 Lion Country Safari Road, Loxahatchee, located along Southern Boulevard, is home to more than 810 animals. It opened 56 years ago, becoming the first "cageless zoo" in the country.

Visitors can see over 89 species from boa constrictors, endangered white rhinoceros and even a zebu, a horned cattle species with a hump and drooping ears.

What makes this Florida animal attraction unique is that it allow guests to see wild animals from around the world roaming free, such as zebras, giraffes and lions, from the comfort of their vehicles. Visitors can park next to a herd of rhinos sunbathing, watch buffalos submerge in a lake to cool off from the summer heat, and can expect ostriches to peck at their windows.

Lion Country Safari's hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekends. Guests can arrive at any time during open hours. Admission is $45 for adults ages 10 and older, $34 for children ages 3 to 9, and free for kids younger than 2. Call (561) 793-1084 or visit the lioncountrysafari.com .

Safari Drive-Thru

The Virginia Safari Park, located in Natural Bridge, offers visitors the opportunity to see and feed animals up-close from their vehicles in the safari drive-thru attraction.

zoochat safari

The Virginia Safari Park opened in the spring of 2000 because we felt there was a need and desire for people to be able to see wild animals in a much more natural environment than had previously been available.

In the Safari, you'll be able to see animals run and frolic with abandon on our 180-acre property. Take your time as you drive along the three miles of maintained gravel road. Feed the animals through your vehicle windows and be prepared to stop for them as they stroll across your path or even lie down.

Our animals are allowed to roam freely and act instinctively. This means you might see males competing with each other for the females’ attention, resulting in cute baby animals being born throughout the season. You could be among the lucky visitors who witness a live birth and the first steps of the newborn.

Feed the Animals

As you make your way along the road in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley, stop every once in a while to feed the animals our specialty grain mixture.

You’ll never forget the experience of one of our huge bull elk or deer eating from your bucket of feed. Drive through as many times as you like to give everyone in your group a chance to have a memorable encounter like this.

The first time I saw meerkat was at the Los Angeles Zoo, when I was a kid. I kept wanting to go back to them, they were so fascinating and cute. I think they are better known to kids (and younger adults) these days because of the Lion King movies, but I had never heard of them before. Platypus would be awesome too. I'm not sure I've ever actually seen one at a North American zoo, though I have seen echidnas. I just googled it, and currently the San Diego zoo Safari Park is the only place outside Australia to have any (just since 2019).

I'm thinking Meerkat, Malayan Porcupine, Capybara, American Beaver and/or Common Wombat.

A small mammal I don't see mentioned a lot, but I believe a lot of people would see as a great addition and is very common in zoos - is the black-tailed prairie dog. If meerkats become a reality in this game, I believe prairie dogs should be fairly easy to make from their rig, even though one is a carnivore and the other a rodent.

Boho Safari Wedding Inspiration Shoot

October 6, 2016.

My friend Brandi and I have yet to get to work together on a real wedding, but we did get to collaborate on this absolutely beautiful Safari themed wedding shoot earlier this year! She and I were discussing random shoot ideas we had and I mentioned how I’ve been wanting to shoot a Safari styled wedding. Brandi took the idea and ran with it! She was able to turn a random idea into something beautiful and genuinely unique! I’ve been so lucky to work with lots of awesome people on some really amazing shoots over the past few years (like our New Year’s Eve workshop shoot  and  Modern Geometric Romance workshop shoot !) and this one was no exception. I really believe that when you put together a styled shoot, it should really be something different and Brandi and the team of vendors who worked together to create this shoot totally knocked it out of the park!!

I think my favorite part of this whole thing (besides photographing Brandi’s work and our hottie pals, We Are the Mitchells ) was shooting at the zoo! We photographed this after hours at the Virginia Zoo and it was like having a private tour of the zoo! Plus, did you know you can really get married here? Someone, take this whole shoot and make it your real wedding, please!

Here are a few of my favorite images from this shoot, which was featured on RuffledBlog yesterday! Be sure to scroll to the end to see a list of all of the talented vendors who worked to make this shoot a success!
