India's dream of winning a Test series in Australia hasn't fulfilled yet. They have toured Australia 10 times but never returned home with the trophy.
India’s dream of winning a Test series in Australia hasn’t fulfilled yet. They have toured Australia 10 times but never returned home with the trophy.
Here is a look-back at India’s performance in Australia from 1947 to 2012.
1947-48: India’s first experience on the Australian soil came when the Lala Amarnath-led India faced Don Bradman’s Australia at the Brisbane Cricket Ground. India began the tour on an awful note as they were trounced by an innings and 226 runs. Amaranth took four wickets in the match.
Riding on an all-round show by Dattu Phadkar (51 runs and 3 wickets), India managed to draw the second Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground but went on to lose the last three Tests. Amarnath was the highest wicket-taker for India with 13 wickets while Vijay Zahare (429) was second in the list of run-getters after Bradman, who led batting chart with 715 runs.
Result: Australia 4, India 0, Draw 1
1967-68: India’s second tour Down Under came after 19 years with Farokh Engineer, Dilip Sardesai, Ajit Wadekar and Chandu Borde on the plane. In the absence of regular captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Borde got the chance to lead the team in the first Test. Abid Ali, who was making his debut, bagged 6 wickets while Engineer chipped in with 89 but India lost the match by 146 runs.
India lost the second Test too, where Ajit Wadekar fell short of just one run to reach a century.
India staged a solid fightback in the third Test. Despite a brilliant century from Motganhalli Jaisimha, India lost the match by 35 runs. Pataudi-led India went on to lose the fourth Test as well and suffered a humiliating 4-0 whitewash by the Bill Lawry-captained Australia.
Result: Australia 4, India 0, Drawn 0
1977-78: Bishen Singh Bedi captained India to their first ever Test win on Australian soil in 1977-78. After losing the first two Tests of the five-match series, India went on to win the third and fourth match thanks to the incredible left-arm spin bowling by skipper Bedi and Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, who bagged 31 and 28 wickets, respectively, in the series. But India lost the final game to concede the series 2-3.
Result: Australia 3, India 2, Drawn 0
1980-81: India played three Tests in Australia under Sunil Gavaskar during the tour. After losing the first match, India held the visitors to a draw in the second and then levelled the series by winning the third. Gundappa Viswanath was adjudged ‘Man of the Match’ for his magnificent 114. The series ended in a 1-1 draw.
Result: Australia 1, India 1, Drawn 1
1985-86: The tour saw all three matches of the series being drawn. For his all-round show, captain Kapil Dev was adjudged ‘Man of the Series’.
Result: Australia 0, India 0, Drawn 3
1991-92: The legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who pulled the curtains down on his glorious 24-year career in 2013, notched up his first Test century on the Australian soil on this tour. Other than that, India failed miserably in front of the Australian pace attack and lost the five-match Test series 4-0.
Result: Australia 4, India 0, Drawn 1
1999-2000: Tendulkar captained India on this tour. After losing the first two Tests, India couldn’t salvage pride in the last Test as well despite VVS Laxman’s first Test century in Australia. The hosts swept the series 3-0.
Result: Australia 3, India 0, Drawn 0
2003-04: Chance of winning a Test series in Australia slipped from India’s hand once again. After playing a draw in the opening Test, the Sourav Ganguly-led India won the second match thanks to Rahul Dravid, who followed his magnificent 233 in the first innings by an unbeaten 72 in the second. But India went on to lose the third Test while the fourth ended in a draw. The four-match series was tied 1-1. With 619 runs in the series at an average of 123.80, Dravid was adjudged ‘Man of the Series.’
Result: Australia 1, India 1, Drawn 2
2007-08: Anil Kumble captained India in the 2007-08 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia which was marred with the ‘Monkeygate’ episode. With the likes of Sehwag, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid and Laxman in the team, India went on tour with high hopes, but the visitors started the campaign on a terrible note losing the first two Tests. And though Kumble & Co won the third Test in Perth, India failed to level the series in the last match to lose it 2-1.
Result: Australia 2, India 1, Drawn 1
2011-12: Mahendra Singh Dhoni skippered the Indian team on the 2011-12 tour. India went in with a combination of young and experienced players but failed to lived up to the expectations suffering a humiliating 4-0 series whitewash. Rahul Dravid took retirement after the tour.
