Ayia Napa, the seaside resort

The sea caves, natural heritage of cyprus.

sea-caves-4098365_1280.jpg

Around these sea caves, the most popular activity is of course the capture of these magnificent moments and places; but many take the occasion to jump from the top of a 10 metre cliff while others go diving and explore the Cypriot sea bed… You can also walk around like a hiker along small coves and sandy beaches…

It’s a real treasure that nature offers us, so don’t miss it! Visiting them is therefore a real must during your stay in Cyprus – Ayia Napa! A complete change of scenery guaranteed!

The Sculpture Park

Less than 5 km from the caves, visit the Sculpture Park of Ayia Napa! This huge open-air museum traces history, art and mythology through sculptures created by artists from all over the world. Indeed, no less than 71 sculptures are present on the site, each as beautiful as the next. Through this project, the Municipality of Ayia Napa wishes to promote art and culture.

cyprus-sculpture-park_4846765_1280.jpg

Sculptures of all countries, sizes and types are on display. Walk along animals, mermaids, hippos and mythological creatures while enjoying a beautiful view of the sea.

The best time to visit this great open-air museum is at sunset. The shades of colour on the water and the light on the sculptures are incredible.

Nissi Beach

What could be better than fine sandy beaches and turquoise sea to relax? The most popular beach in Ayia Napa, welcome to Nissi Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches of Cyprus and the Mediterranean! This 500-metre long beach takes its name from the islet of Nissi, located close to the coast. The islet, although uninhabited, is accessible on foot across the shallow water.

ayia-napa-cyprus-4764756.jpg

Nissi Beach has become very popular since the 2002 summer season. At that time, the BBC promoted the beach via live broadcasts. The sandy beach is now a real landmark for clubbers but also for locals and tourists who come to enjoy the sun and music all day long and come for a swim. There are water games, foam parties and DJ playing all kind of music. The beach also has 2 volleyball courts, open to the public.

« Thalassa » : the museum of the sea

Opened in August 2005, the municipal (archaeological, one might say) sea museum is worth a visit! Located in the centre of Ayia Napa , it is the first Mediterranean museum to show the public the impact and importance of the sea on the history of Cyprus, both in prehistoric times and today.

ayia-napa-museum.jpg

This three-storey building offers a unique experience: underground showcases in which visitors can walk and observe objects from above, and modern showcases. Some of the exhibits are suspended from the roof. However, all of them are illuminated. During your visit, discover all kinds of remains: fossilised fish, shells, corals, small turtles, starfish and much more. All the living beings in the museum have been found around and on the island!

There is plenty to transport you to the depths of the sea and water of Cyprus, so come and visit the museum!

Larnaca, the medieval city

Also known as the “Fort of Larnaca”, the fortress is located at the end of the Finikoudes promenade. Originally built in medieval times, its present appearance is a result of the domination of the Ottoman Empire and it is one of the most cultural places in the country. The Byzantine imprint is also strong. The castle with its multiple walls was originally built to defend the city’s port. When the British conquered Cyprus, they turned the castle into a prison, which they used during the first years of domination. On the ground floor, the wing on the eastern side was used as a room for the execution of prisoners until 1948!

larnaca-castle-4675923.jpg

Today there are no more prisoners or executions but a simple medieval and archaeological museum overlooking the city and offering a unique view of the seafront. Numerous tombs of people who have marked the history of Cyprus are present on the site. Admission to the castle is €2.50 at full price. Admission is free for students from any university or country.

Larnaca Salt Lake

Legend has it that it was Saint Lazarus who transformed this field of grapes into a salt lake to condemn its owner who had refused to give him a few bunches of grapes.

salt-lake-cyprus-5723872.jpg

Best place to admire a beautiful sunset and flamingos, take a trip to the Larnaca salt lake! It is one of the favourite places for locals and tourists to walk around and enjoy nature, only a few kilometres from the city centre! In the middle of winter, flamingos, ducks and swans surface and make this place even more beautiful and incredible than it is in summer (the summers are dry and hot so the lake dries up a bit too…)!

Finikoudes Promenade

The main street of the city, you can’t miss this walk. You will find on one side the sea and on the other side many bars and restaurants as well as souvenir shops. The beach of Finikoudes, located on the promenade, is also unmissable!

Finikoudes-biker-4689235.jpg

Take a walk along the paths, then go to the old town of Larnaca, very close to Finikoudes. You will find many small street with locals bas and coffee shops.

Modern buildings, colourful restaurants and yachts, welcome to Limassol Marina! While walking along the Marina, you could almost believe that it is a movie set…

limassol-cyprus-2609495.jpg

Take a walk along this place and discover a world completely out of the ordinary: luxury boutiques will take you there and your dream villa will take you somewhere else and you won’t want to leave! The Marina is known as the “Cypriot Saint-Tropez”…

The medieval castle

There are many castles in the surrounding area. The Limassol castle is located in the heart of Limassol. Although it was originally medieval, it was completely rebuilt during the Ottoman domination of the island around 1590, so the Turkish imprint is strong. The site is now a museum, which can be visited, and contains many archaeological treasures. Indeed, you will find there various paleochristian, Byzantium, Franks, Venetian and Ottoman objects.

Southern Cyprus – Tourist Attractions, Things to do & Photo spots (Cyprus)

28. July 2017 Categories: Travel reports , Europe , Cyprus

After our sightseeing stops in Northern Cyprus we wanted to explore the most important sights of Southern Cyprus, because also the south of the island has all sorts of interesting and interesting things to offer. It would have been almost impossible for us to look at all the main attractions of Cyprus in one week. So we just picked out a few things that we could easily reach by car from our Hotel Acapulco Beach Resort & SPA in Kyrenia. We would like to introduce you to you here.

Map of the Tourist Attractions in Southern Cyprus

In Google MyMaps we have put together a map and entered all the important sights in Southern Cyprus.

The Painted Churches in the Troodos Area

Ten of the more than 25 painted barn roof churches located in the Troodos Mountains of southern Cyprus were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. The barn roof churches, built in the typical Cypriot style, owe their name to their appearance: coarse stones, deep-drawn shingle roofs and the fact that there is no church tower make them look like barns. From the outside, they also look relatively inconspicuous. But as soon as you enter one of the churches, you can see the colourful and partly well-preserved frescoes on the walls. Very impressive.

On our tour of the Troodos Mountains we visited a total of four of the UNESCO barn roof churches: Panagia tis Asinou, Archangelos Michail (Pedoulas), Panagia tou Moutoulla and Agios Ioannis Lampadistis.

The first church we had visited ( Panagia tis Asinou ) was also best enjoyed, as the church was solitary and the wall malries were very well preserved inside. In addition, we were the only visitors here, so that we could see everything in peace.

The Kykkos Monastery & the Monument of Makario

Also in the Troodos Mountains, at an altitude of 1,140 metres on the slope of a ridge, is the monastery of Kykkos , which can only be reached via a serpentine but very well developed road. Parking is available right in front of the monastery and access is free for visitors. If you do not have the appropriate clothes for a monastery (knee-covering), you can borrow a corresponding cape at the entrance. The monastery was founded in the 12th century, but the buildings – i.e. a church, the courtyard, the museum buildings and the monastery passages – were destroyed due to earthquakes and fires in the 19th and completely rebuilt in the 20th century. We particularly liked the two courtyards of the monastery, which are surrounded by arches and magnificently decorated with frescoes and mosaics walkways and galleries.

About two kilometres from the monastery, the monument of Makario on Mount Throni is located on a hill already visible from a distance. Here is also the tomb of Archbishop Makarios III , which is always guarded by soldiers. The archbishop and former president of the Republic of Cyprus has spent several years in the monastery of Kykkos – for this reason his tomb is also not far from the monastery.

The Monastery of Stavrovouni

Stavrovouni Monastery is located about 40 minutes’ drive west of Larnaca and 40 minutes south of Nicosia on a rocky peak at an altitude of about 750 metres. After driving along a very winding road and arriving at the top, you will see a small church and will be rewarded with a great view of the surrounding area. A few meters further you stand at the gates of the actual monastery, from here you can also take a look at the monastery. We had already read in advance on the Internet that only men are allowed in here. But unfortunately we have read over that one can only enter the monastery with appropriate clothing, i.e. long top and long trousers. We didn’t have it. But since the monastery had closed for three hours anyway over noon, a visit was unnecessary anyway.

Hala-Sultan-Tekke Mosque

About 5 kilometers south of Larnaca is the mosque Hala-Sultan-Tekke . It was built in 648 A.D., renovated in 1816 and is considered one of the most important sanctuaries of Islam. The location of the mosque is particularly impressive: surrounded by palm trees on the edge of a large salt lake (which unfortunately had just dried up here), in which flamingos usually live.

The Agia Napa Sculpture Park

On the south-eastern coast of south-eastern Cyprus is Agia Napa , a small place known for beach and party holidays and overpopulated by tourists in the summer months. On the eastern edge of the village is a 20,000 square metre sculpture park, which is accessible free of charge and offers an extensive collection of sculptures by more than 50 artists from all over the world.

The best places to visit in Cyprus: from Aphrodite's rock to Adonis' bath

In the eastern reaches of the balmy Mediterranean, the island of Cyprus offers an incredible blend of ancient archeological sites, icon-filled monasteries and historic houses of worship, all set against a backdrop of black pine forest and beach-fringed turquoise seas.

Whether you’re a beach basker, a scenery seeker, a fan of Greek mythology or just someone who loves learning about how people lived in ancient times, this island nation won’t disappoint. Here are twelve of the best places to visit in Cyprus.

Adonis Baths Waterfalls

Situated in the village of Kili (Koili) near Pafos , the Adonis Baths provide a lovely alternative to beachfront swimming, offering cool waters that cascade down into a large pool surrounded by forest. According to legend, Aphrodite and her consort, Adonis, spent a considerable amount of time at this bath, and some believe it to be a veritable fountain of youth.

However, most people come here just to cool off on sweltering summer days, and there’s a rope swing for those who want to make a dramatic entry into the waters.

Agios Neophytos Monastery

One of the best-known monasteries on the island, Agios Neophytos is a striking structure, featuring a rocky facade carved into the side of a mountain, over 500 meters above sea level. Today the monastery offers a mix of beautiful architecture and gorgeous icons, and many of the well-preserved frescoes here were created between the 12th and 15th centuries. It's inland from Pafos, on the edge of the Agios Neophytos Forest; on the way, you can detour to curious, cat-filled Tala Monastery .

Agios Lazaros (The Church of Saint Lazarus)

Dating back to the 9th century, this Orthodox church in Larnaka is known both for its beautifully preserved Byzantine architecture and for housing the tomb of Saint Lazarus, of Bible fame. The limestone exterior is photo-worthy all by itself, but it's worth spending time exploring the interior, not only to view the risen saint's tomb, but also to check out the gilded baroque iconostasis that adorns the church’s shadowy interior.

Hala Sultan Tekkesi reflected in the Larnaka Salt Lake

Hala Sultan Tekkesi

On the banks of the Larnaka Salt Lake, Hala Sultan Tekkesi is a striking mosque and Sufi shrine that was built over the centuries and finally completed in 1817. It was constructed around the tomb of Umm Haram, an aunt and companion of the Prophet Mohammed. Along with a mosque and shrine, the complex features a series of landscaped courtyards with views out over the saline lake.

Today, it's a quiet monument to Cyprus' pre-partition past. While the architecture and peaceful ambiance are reason enough to visit, many people just come to the complex to say hello to the hundred-odd stray cats who call the Hala Sultan Tekkesi home.

Choirokoitia

The Unesco World Heritage-listed Choirokoitia archaeological site is one of the most significant Neolithic sites in the region, and digs here have helped archaeologists get a better grasp on how people lived in the 7th to 4th millennia BCE.

While only part of the site has been excavated so far, there's still plenty for visitors to see and experience. The most interesting feature is a collection of reconstructions of prehistoric dwellings that have been decked out with replicas of household items that were used in Neolithic times.

Pafos Archaeological Site

Spread out by the sea near the center of Pafos , this spectacular complex includes some of the most impressive archaeological sites on the island. It's like an open-air museum, with plenty of best-on-the-island highlights, including an ancient odeon (theater) that is used for performances to this day.

There are also four Roman villas that house a stunning collection of beautifully preserved floor mosaics. The most impressive is the House of Dionysus, whose ornate mosaic floors portray Dionysus, the god of wine, aboard a panther-drawn chariot.

Hiker raising arms over views of mountains in Troodos National Park

The Painted Churches of Troödos

The Unesco World Heritage-listed painted churches of the Troödos mountains have hardly changed since Byzantine times. These crude stone and timber chapels were filled with amazing murals of saints, archangels and Bible scenes between the 11th and 16th centuries, and the colors shine as brightly today as they did when they were painted. If time is short, make a beeline for the churches of Panagia Forviotissa (near Nikitari) and Archangelos Michail (in Pedoulas).

Kolossi Castle

West of Lemesos (Limassol), close to the southern coast of Cyprus, stocky Kolossi Castle was used as a stronghold during the Crusades. The castle was occupied by the mysterious Knights Templar during their reign on the island, and it was here that they first produced a type of sweet, fortified wine known as Commandaria, now celebrated as the world's oldest continually produced named wine.

Kykkos Monastery

High up in the mountainous interior, west of Pedoulas, Kykkos Monastery is home to a museum showcasing some of the most impressive icons on the island, alongside ancient reliquaries and other votive objects. Kykkos was established in the 11th century after a hermit healed the daughter of the Byzantine emperor at the time, Alexios I Komnenos.

The hermit was rewarded with a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary and the funds to build a monastery to enshrine it. The icon is kept at the monastery to this day, albeit shrouded, as it's believed that anyone who looks upon its beauty will go blind.

People walking on the beach as waves wash around Aphrodite's Rock

Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou)

Situated on the southern coast of Cyprus, between Lemesos and Pafos, this rock formation and beach is believed to be where Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, emerged from the sea. Today, it’s a popular tourist attraction, and while the beach pales in comparison to the sandier spots in nearby Pafos, it's an undeniably scenic spot. According to legend, if you swim around the rock three times, you'll find your true love – just be careful as the sea here can be rough at times.

Tombs of the Kings

In the southwest corner of the island, on the outskirts of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings is an ancient necropolis comprising rock-hewn tombs dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman eras. Here you’ll find a sprawl of sunken graves and underground chambers, some crude and some regal and refined.

Many of the tombs resemble ancient homes, complete with beautifully carved Doric pillars. Although excavation is still in progress, visitors are welcome to explore the tombs on foot, descending rock-hewn steps and passageways into the ancient chambers below.

Ancient Kourion

Between Lemesos and Pafos, the ancient Roman and Hellenistic site of Kourion has one of the most impressive settings in the Mediterranean, perched atop a rocky hillside above an undeveloped shingle beach. The site has everything from the ruins of an early Christian basilica and a Roman theater and bathhouse to ancient villas full of mosaics and crude, rock-cut tombs at the base of the cliffs.

Today, people still flock here, but it's now to seek out the island's beaches rather than to gain power and glory.

For travelers interested in more than sand and sun, you're in for a treat, as Cyprus has archaeological sites , fine Byzantine churches, and monasteries and museums galore among its historic tourist attractions.

It's also a wonderful place to go hiking , with an incredible wealth of unique flora and fauna. Best of all, it's so small that you can easily base yourself in one town and head out on sightseeing day trips from there.

Make sure you don't miss any of what's on offer by using our list of the top attractions and places to visit in Cyprus.

1. Ancient Kourion

2. st. hilarion castle, 4. karpas peninsula, 5. ancient salamis, 6. kolossi castle, 7. cape greco, 8. troodos villages, 9. house of dionysus, 10. cyprus museum, 11. nissi beach, 12. kyrenia, 13. underwater museum, 14. famagusta old city, 15. protaras beaches, 16. nicosia old city.

Ancient Kourion

There's no shortage of ancient sites in Cyprus, but Kourion is the pick of the bunch. Exploring the grand monuments and mosaics here is one of the best things to do in Cyprus .

Romantically situated across a coastal cliff, with tumbling views of the countryside and Mediterranean below, it's a magical place.

The entire site is vast, but the most famous places to visit while here are the theater and the House of Eustolios , which holds a clutch of fine, well-preserved mosaics.

For those with more time up their sleeves, the large Byzantine basilica area is wonderfully picturesque with its tumbled columns and scraps of mosaic floor.

St. Hilarion Castle

One of the Mediterranean's most beautiful castle ruins, St. Hilarion is an old Crusader bastion and home to many myths and legends.

Local lore claims the castle itself was built by a fairy queen, who used to charm local shepherds on the slopes here.

The castle's extensive ramparts and chambers snake up the mountain and are explorer heaven. A trail runs through the lower castle buildings of soldier barracks and stables, up to the remnants of towers, royal apartments, and chapels.

For those that climb right to the top, the views across the hills and down to the coastal plain are phenomenal.

St. Hilarion is in north Cyprus, so you need to cross the Green Line to visit. The north has three major castle ruins, but St. Hilarion is by far the best preserved. This is the one to visit if you're only on a day trip to the north.

Larnaca

Easygoing Larnaca, on the island's southeast coast, may be a seaside resort, but it's kept its local soul.

This is by far the most laid-back base for holidaymakers here. All the facilities for sun- and sand-based fun can be found, but the old crumbling Turkish Quarter (called Skala) and ornate Agios Lazaros (Church of St. Lazarus) give the town an interesting historical edge, while the center itself has retained the atmosphere of a proper workaday town rather than just a summer resort.

Even better, the salt lake , just to Larnaca's west, is packed full of flocks of pink flamingos during spring, and plenty of hill villages and cultural tourist attractions lie in the surrounding hinterland.

Golden Beach on the Karpas Peninsula

The most beautiful region in Cyprus is the lonely and rugged Karpas Peninsula, which stretches out in a long finger of golden beaches backed by rugged hills in the northeast of the island (in north Cyprus).

It's Cyprus' least trodden area with sublime hiking, quaint villages, and hidden historical sites in abundance.

This is the place you need to head if you want to experience the undiscovered and undeveloped island life of old.

Agios Filon church

Venture out for the day in a car (the area has virtually no public transport) and visit the mosaics of Agia Triada at Sipahi village before heading further northeast to remote Dipkarpaz village and the small ruin of Agios Filon church.

Afterwards, move on to the peninsula's famous Golden Beach, a vast swath of sand that sums up the Karpas' rugged appeal.

Ancient Salamis

This huge archaeological site is home to a wealth of marble ruins and ranks up there with Ancient Kourion as the top historical site on the island.

Wandering along the dirt tracks of Salamis between sets of ruins from a muddle of different time periods is a lesson in the vast history of Cyprus.

Grand Hellenistic statuary – missing their heads, which were lopped off by over-zealous Christians – sit amid the ruins of the Gymnasium.

Two substantial ruins of Byzantine churches stand amid fields of wild fennel and weeds, and a humongous reservoir area showcases the engineering ability and management of what must have once been a grand ancient city.

Ancient Salamis is in north Cyprus and is easily combined with a day trip to Famagusta.

Kolossi Castle

If castles had cuteness competitions, Kolossi would surely come up trumps. This tiny but perfectly formed castle just outside of Limassol is an old Crusader stronghold and a reminder of Cyprus' importance for the Europeans during the Holy Land Crusades.

First held by the Knights of St. John, the castle was used as a commandery for the area, with an excellent location looking out over the coast line.

Today, the castle's appeal is mostly down to its dollhouse proportions and its tranquil position amid snoozy Kolossi village.

Cape Greco

Even along Cyprus' buzzing south coast, there are regions where you can escape the crowds.

Cape Greco is a rugged and rocky coastal national park covering the promontory that makes up the island's southerly tip. There's a variety of walking trails here that start just east of the resort of Agia Napa.

The longest trail winds across the rocky headland, with staircases at points along the cliff, where you can descend to swim by the sea caves, and ending at the tiny cove of Konnos Beach, where you can cool off with another swim after your walk.

There is a wonderful variety of local flora here, particularly many of Cyprus' endemic wild orchids that bloom in early spring but the real highlight is the absolutely gorgeous coastal scenery with azure blue sea beyond.

Agros village in the Troodos Mountains

The Troodos Massif (Troodos Mountains), in the hill region of the southwest, are packed full of pretty villages full of stone-cut traditional houses and cobblestone alleys.

They're also home to some of Cyprus' most amazing churches and monasteries that hold vibrant frescoes and wall paintings that date from the medieval era.

The Troodos churches are so important historically that nine of them have been given UNESCO World Heritage status.

Hiring a car and tootling around this area, searching out stone cut chapels is a great day out but if you only have time to view one, the Church of Archangelos Michail in the little village of Pedoulas should be top of your things to do list.

For self-drive day trip potential, the Troodos Mountains are easiest accessed using Limassol or Nicosia as your base.

To cut down on the driving there are also plenty of small boutique-style hotels in the main Troodos Mountains villages themselves.

House of Dionysus

The big-hitter site in the resort of Paphos is the House of Dionysus, home to an incredible collection of mosaic floors that are feted for their excellent preservation and vibrant coloring.

Part of the larger Paphos Archaeological Site which contains the excavated remains of ancient Paphos, the area is home to a variety of Greco-Roman ruins, as well as several other mosaic houses.

Mosaic at the House of Dionysus

The House of Dionysus remains the most visited part of the site because it contains the best examples of intricate mosaic artistry.

The house is named after the god Dionysus who crops up in many of the mosaics throughout the house, which mostly depict scenes of Greek mythology.

Cyprus Museum

With so many archaeological sites, Cyprus is packed full of museums, but the Cyprus Museum in the capital Nicosia is where you go to pull together all of the island's history.

Extremely well-curated, the museum takes visitors on a journey from the Neolithic age right up to the Ottoman era using beautiful artifacts to show the sophisticated artistry of each period.

The standout exhibits are the huge collection of terra-cotta votive statues that date from the 7th century BC.

Even if you're based on the coast, you should definitely make a half-day trip to the capital just to view the museum.

Nissi Beach

A swath of white sand loveliness that rolls onto the turquoise sea in Agia Napa, Nissi Beach is Cyprus' most famous strip of sand.

Yes, it gets crowded in summer (a beach this gorgeous doesn't stay a secret), but even with rows of sunbeds, there's no denying Nissi's beauty.

The water is very shallow at the shoreline and very calm within the bay as a whole, making it a great spot for families with young children, and in the summer high season, bags of facilities are on offer, meaning you can make an entire day at the beach.

Kyrenia

Kyrenia (Girne) is north Cyprus' prettiest town having clung to the old Ottoman character of its harborside district.

Kyrenia Castle overlooks the quaint harbor on the eastern side, and climbing up onto the castle's ramparts rewards you with fantastic views across the town.

A squiggle of narrow lanes meander back from the waterfront area, full of wooden-shuttered houses in various states of disrepair. It's a great place for strolling and soaking up the timeless atmosphere and there are plenty of cafés overlooking the harbor for when you want to put your feet up.

MUSAN Museum of Underwater Sculpture Ayia Napa

Opened in 2021, the underwater museum park (officially called MUSAN Museum of Underwater Sculpture Ayia Napa) is an underwater forest featuring 130 sculptures created by reef artist Jason deCaires Taylor.

As well as being a major new tourist attraction, the forest has been created to help the local marine environment, with the sculptures (all made from PH neutral cement that will eventually attract coral) set between kelp, which will grow to become a dense forest attracting marine life to the area.

Both snorkelers and scuba divers can explore the underwater museum, though divers will be able to head down to the farthest depths of the park.

MUSAN is situated off the coast of Pernera Beach in Ayia Napa.

Famagusta old city

In north Cyprus, don't miss the old city of Famagusta, surrounded by sturdy, high Venetian-era walls and inside, scattered with the crumbling ruins of Gothic churches.

In the center is the Lala Mustafa Paşa Mosque, which was originally the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, built in the early 14th century during the reign of the Lusignans.

Sprinkled throughout the old city's lanes are several other churches in various states of ruin or disrepair, mostly dating from the 14th century and built in the Gothic style but also some earlier Byzantine examples.

Famagusta's biggest tourist attraction, though, is its 16th-century Venetian walls, with its bastions and gates, which can still be climbed up and traversed across at some sections.

Beautiful beach in Protaras

In the island's southeast corner, the coastline running north from Cape Greco up to the Green Line (which separates the Republic from the north) is speckled with beaches.

This stretch of coast is a summer resort haven, with the little town of Protaras the central base for family-friendly holidays devoted to sun, sea, and sand.

Protaras Beach and Fig Tree Bay are the two most popular strips of sand, with plenty of water sports on offer and facilities for a full day of beach time, though the small white-sand cove of Konnos Beach, on the northern edge of Cape Greco, comes a close third.

To the north of Protaras, the little sand strips of Agia Triada Beach and Skoutari Beach are great options if you want to escape the biggest crowds, but during mid-summer, don't expect any patch of sand along this coast to be empty.

Nicosia old city alleyway

Nicosia is Europe's last divided capital. Nicosia (Lefkosia) is the capital of the Republic of Cyprus, and North Nicosia (Lefkoşa) is the capital of UN-unrecognized north Cyprus.

The Green Line slices right through the center of the walled old city district, and you will need to have your passport (and fulfill any of the current border requirements, which change regularly) if you want to cross.

In Nicosia (Lefkosia), the old city lanes are home to several excellent small museums, including the Makarios Cultural Foundation Byzantine Museum, and some fresco-covered churches, such as the Agios Ioannis Church.

Two of the city's best preserved architectural sights are in North Nicosia (Lefkoşa). Here, you'll find the glorious Gothic architecture of the Selimiye Mosque, originally the 14th-century St. Sophia Cathedral, and the Ottoman-era caravanserai of the Büyük Han.

The following itineraries can all be done within a fortnight, giving you a taste of both sides of the island.

Recommended Cyprus itineraries

If you are planning your travel to Cyprus yourself, use these itineraries created by our travel writers as a starting point for inspiration.

Omodos village, Cyprus

Cyprus Itinerary 1 - The Grand Tour

Two weeks in Cyprus and not sure where to start? Our Grand Tour puts you on the right track.

Home to the island's biggest airport, Larnaka is the inevitable starting point for many visitors to Cyprus. However, its elegant promenade, beautiful Agios Lazaros cathedral, ancient ruins, and a vibrant resort are reason to linger.

Cyprus's second city, with a reputation for great restaurants, has transformed itself recently into the definition of laidback Mediterranean living.

3. The Troodos Mountains

Small villages, lovely monasteries and churches, cool mountain air, the Troodos Massif offers a startling contrast to the more hectic coast.

Known for its family-friendly resorts, Pafos has, among the hotels, shops and restaurants, a pretty harbour, some world-class historical monuments and a fascinating hinterland of small villages.

5. Girne (Kyrenia)

The most beautiful harbour town on the island, and a good introduction to life in north Cyprus, Girne has a stunning castle, a relaxed atmosphere and offers wonderful days out to St Hilarion Castle and Bellapais Abbey.

6. Nicosia (Lefkosia/Lefkoşa)

Cyprus's capital, with a wealth of monuments, museums and good shopping and eating, offers a taste of both north and south Cyprus – you can cross from one side to the other in a matter of minutes.

7. Gazimağusa (Famagusta)

An ancient port city defined by its elegantly ruined old town, pounded by the Ottomans in 1571. Nearby are the magnificent ruins of Ancient Salamis and also the unsettling sight of Varosha, derelict since 1974.

Cyprus Itinerary 2 - East Cyprus

East Cyprus, particularly Larnaka district, boasts some of the island's finest beaches, liveliest resorts and several crossing points to the north.

1. Agia Napa

Once the archetypal 18–30 resort, Agia Napa has morphed into a more sophisticated destination with a surprising smattering of museums, street art and other attractions.

Worth a day or two for its promenade, town centre beach and marina, and also its old fort, Pierides museum and Agios Lazaros Church.

3. Nicosia (Lefkosia/Lefkoşa)

Take a walking tour of both north and south sides of the city, then drive across the Green Line and north to Girne, stopping off at St Hilarion Castle on the way.

4. The Karpaz Peninsula

Explore the villages and small-scale sights of the Karpaz Peninsula. Look out for its wild donkeys, and press on to lonely Apostolos Andreas monastery, both the easternmost and the northernmost point on the island.

You could spend an entire day exploring the ancient city of Salamis, the nearby Royal Tombs, Monastery of St Barnabas and the ruins of Enkomi-Alasia – all within a couple of kilometres of each other.

6. Gazimağusa (Famagusta)

A modern city with an old town at its heart, a place for strolling, sitting in cafés, and admiring the historical ruins.

Cross back into the republic at Strovilia, drive around the Kokkinochoria (red villages), and drop into the Cultural Centre of Occupied Famagusta to view the ruins of Varosha on the outskirts of Gazimağusa, a ghost town abandoned since the invasion of 1974.

Cyprus Itinerary 3 - West Cyprus

The west side of the island presents untouched wilderness, lively resorts and some of the island's most important archeological sites.

With an airport second in importance only to Larnaka, Pafos is the best place to start a tour of the west. Don't miss the town's spectacular UNESCO-listed Roman mosaics, important early Christian remains, eerie Tombs of the Kings or, just to the southeast, the ruins of Palaipafos and pretty Petra tou Romiou, birthplace of Aphrodite.

Driving from Pafos to Polis, take time to look at the Monastery of Agios Neofytos, Pafos Zoo, and the numerous villages, known for their traditions and their wine, in between. Polis is also the gateway to the Akamas Peninsula.

3. Kato Pyrgos

Having driven northeast around Chrysochou Bay, through the villages of Pomos and Pachyammos, stay for a while in quiet Kato Pyrgos, from where you can explore the forests of Tiliria.

4. Vouni and Soli

Cross the Green Line into north Cyprus at Limnitis/Yesilirmak, and take time to look first at the remains of the Palace of Vouni, then of Soli. Continue to Güzelyurt, an unpretentious market town with an interesting museum.

5. The northern Troodos

After Güzelyurt, cross back into the south at Zodeia/Astromeritis and head up into the northern Troodos regions of Marathasa and Solea, staying perhaps in Kakopetria. Head south to the coastal motorway, then west to Pafos Airport and your flight home.

Below, we’ve made a selection of some of Cyprus’ most important landmarks and points of interest to traverse in just five days- enjoy your detailed Cyprus itinerary below.

A Word on Cyprus

The climate.

Generally steeped in the sun, Cyprus is not the summer-peak destination to visit. The best times to visit the island is either during early spring or late summer.

A bus ticket costs €1.50. Renting a car costs from €6 a day and higher, depending on the provider and the car category.

Accommodation

Cyprus offers a versatile selection of accommodations that fit everyone’s budget- from Airbnbs to hotels, motels, resorts, hostels, and even camping grounds. So we could find affordable stays with no problem and everywhere.

south cyprus tourist map

When booking your accommodation, always have a look at the latest reviews on Booking . Some hotels have changed their policy during and after the pandemic. That made the review score less reliable. So make sure you read the latest ones.

Here are the most up-to-date deals in Cyprus:

While accommodation costs vary depending on the perks provided, a hotel for two people averages €75. A meal around town will cost you between 10-15 euros (drink included). A taxi ride from A to B will cost an average of 10 euros, whereas various bus tickets might cost 15 euros altogether, or more.

So you have guessed it: the best plan is to rent a car and stay away from touristy restaurants 😉

Airports in Cyprus

Larnaca International Airport and Paphos International Airport cover 90% of the trial traffic and fly from Cyprus. Depending on your flight, you will be landing in either of these, and you will find both great car rental opportunities. (Book it in advance online as it will be much cheaper)

Day 1: Larnaca & Limassol

Arriving in larnaca.

Arriving by plane in Cyprus, chances are higher that you will land on the Larnaca International Airport, the larger of the island’s two main airports. It’s 4 km southwest of Larnaca. And that is where our itinerary will start.

larnaca cyprus itinerary

Larnaca, the island’s third-largest city after Nicosia and Limassol, is a major tourist center located on the southern coast of Cyprus in the Larnaca Bay and known for its bustling sandy beaches, warm water, palm-tree seafront, and many historic buildings.

A shuttle bus is available from the airport to take you downtown Larnaca, and the best thing about this seaside town is that you don’t need a whole day to explore it.

Exploring Larnaca

Take a stroll around its cobbled streets and explore the town’s unique centuries-old architecture packed in shades of white stone and the occasional pop of color, and lined with market and grocery stands where locals sell the freshest summer fruits, vegetables, spices, teas, and Cyprus’ ever-beloved homemade coffee .

A walk around town will take you to the ever-famous Church of Saint Lazarus , a massive building dating from the 9 th century. The impressive structure is a testimony of Larnaca’s rich history -and just a street down- the Turkish neighborhood awaits.

Also known as the Old Bazaar , this vintage neighborhood, also referred to as Skala, is palm-infused and vivacious and makes the perfect location for lunch-on-the-go.

south cyprus tourist map

Of course, while roaming the streets, you will find yourself in front of the Larnaca Castle , one of its most intriguing monuments surrounded by blossoming vegetation and wonderful floral gardens you can explore free of charge, whereas, on the other side of the castle, a massive azure beach awaits!

Take your time sunbathing or enjoy your morning coffee soaked in rich sunlight that often requires having sunglasses and a hat on.

Recommended tour time: 2-3 hours Recommended dining spots: Ocean Basket, Paradosiako Fish, Vinaria

Hello Limassol!

If you did not rent a car, hop onto a 47-minute bus drive from downtown Larnaca to Limassol, Cyprus’ key port city and biggest tourist center.

Visit Limassol Castle

Any intercity bus will take you straight to the heart of Limassol , where you can begin your journey by visiting the medieval nearby Limassol Castle , where the English King Richard I married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191 on his way to a crusade in the Holy Land – all at a ticket price of €3.4.

limassol castle

Limassol is renowned for its outstanding landscapes and attractions, and you don’t need to go big to see them all.

A Walk to Remember

Just walking around town will bring you closer to vivid coffee shops, local dining cafes, and restaurants, as well as wineries where a glass of homemade white and a side of cheese will warm your soul and keep you full.

Boasting 16 kilometers of sandy beaches, you are welcome to walk your way to Dassoudi Beach , the town’s central hotspot, and take a few hours to yourself to just, well, take a breather and soak in the sun.

Eat a Gyros at Dassoudi Beach

All other beaches around Limassol are distant and known for their bewildering nature, so they might not be swimmer-friendly while amazing to visit. However, at Dassoudi beach, you can grab a lunch or early dinner, mainly from its local food shops, where they serve the finest Gyros on the go!

south cyprus tourist map

And don’t get me started about that soul-capturing sunset flashing its rainbow of colors!

Recommended time: 3-4 hours Recommended dining spots: Pixida Fish Tavern, Hobo Mediterraneo, Terry’s Place

Day 2: Paphos & Aphrodite’s Temple

Good morning- ready for your next Cyprus adventure?

Getting to Paphos

Hop on an intercity bus (the same website as above – you should be an expert now 😉 ) in Limassol and, in just 40 minutes, you will find yourselves in the old city of Paphos- staring into the wide Mediterranean horizon.

Located west of Limassol, Paphos offers a mesmerizing and picturesque coastline, boasting views that never leave a dull moment.

Explore the Tombs of the Kings

North of the city, and a 20-minute walk from its center, you will arrive at the Tombs of the Kings necropolis. Here, you can explore this exquisite UNESCO World Heritage Site, exhibiting Greek and Roman architecture samples, such as the classical Doric columns.

south cyprus tourist map

Keep in mind, a full day at this archaeological site ticket will cost you around €8.5.

The Goddess of Beauty and Her Rock

If you find yourselves at the Paphos main harbor , however, you can board a local bus or, even better- rent a car- and in 20-minutes time, you will find yourself at Aphrodite’s Rock – the actual birthplace of the Greek Goddess herself.

Aphrodite’s Rock forbids climbing, but the scenery alone sure is breathtaking .

While a short drive away, you might want to save a few hours to explore the region in detail. (Here is a great viewpoint !)

south cyprus tourist map

The venerated goddess has left a deep imprint on the island, particularly on Paphos, where also stood a temple in her tribute and for centuries a place of worship and pilgrimage before the emergence of Christianity.

So, you might opt for booking a whole tour (and ahead of time!) when visiting this deity temple for a more detailed introduction.

Aphrodite’s Rock offers many activities to embark on- from skydiving to lounging venues and, for the lovers of all things nature, good old sunbathing. At the same time, the entrance to its main baths will cost you zero parking fees and no entrance whatsoever!

Recommended time : 5-6 hours Recommended dining spots :  Aphrodite’s Rock Microbrewery, Efraim Tavern, Melania Restaurant, Paphos .

Day 3: Akamas Peninsula National Park

Ready for your next day? It’s going to be epic!

Presenting – the Akamas Peninsula National Park, boasting some of Cyprus’ most inviting beaches.

Visit the Blue Lagoon and Lara Beach

cyprus itinerary

The distinctly rugged turf, rocky cliffs, and, of course, sunny beaches- are a must-see, especially if you are keen on exploring unique national parks.

The park is perfect for lovers of underwater adventures, with water so clear that you can see the seabed without any special equipment or even a pair of swimming goggles.

Meet with Mother Nature

The Akamas National Reserve Park teems dense vegetation, stony cliffs, and diverse flora and fauna, making it a versatile place for a whole-day tour. That also includes 168 species of birds, 20 different reptiles, 16 species of butterfly, and 12 different varieties of mammals.

To explore this unique beauty more broadly, we recommend you book a tour and early access.

south cyprus tourist map

The site is majestic and broad, welcoming all eager explorers to spend the entire day at the beach by unsalted water bodies: secret rocky paths and its 230-square-kilometer maze of impressive forests, wildlife, and steep gorges.

Note that dining at the National Park venues is not available while dining at Lara beach is quite pricey (water bottles included!), so you might want to save a few bucks and fix yourself a picnic menu for the day.

Recommended time: 5-7 hours Recommended dining spots: Oz Cafe&Bar, Yeni Hayat Restaurant, Blue Lagoon Restaurant Day ticket: 5 euros

Day 4: Kyrenia (Northern Cyprus)

If you love northern scenery and a blend of beaches plus mountains- you’ll definitely fall head over heels with Kyrenia!

Cyprus’ northernmost hotspot, Kyrenia, might be the smallest of the island’s districts, but it is still one of the most attractive ones.

south cyprus tourist map

It is an hour or so away from Larnaca and Limassol, while from Paphos, it might take you up to 2 hours to arrive via intercity bus or rent-a-car.

Enjoy the Northern Coast

The district covers a large portion of Cyprus’ northern coast and offers a fantastic sea outlook.

For a day of lounging and chilling, you are always welcome to uncover Kyrenia’s most precious beaches, such as Alagadi Turtle Beach, or party it up at the Escape Beach Club.

Kyrenia Mountains

The Kyrenia Mountains invite you to have a blast!

Stretching for about 160km along the coast, the mountain slopes promise a memorable view and some historical sights to visit as well.

south cyprus tourist map

A clearly designated path will easily take you to the Kantara Castle, the Buffavento Castle , and the St. Hilarion Castle – all within a few kilometers of each other. Put your best forward and explore these sites on foot to properly take in the ravishing landscape, vibrant vegetation, and historical relevance of the area.

If arriving by car, you can always leave your vehicle at the Kyrenia harbor or book a parking spot online in advance.

Recommended time: 5-6 hours Recommended dining spots: Kyrenia Tavern, Eziç Peanuts, Azure Cyprus

Day 5: Nicosia & Ayia Napa

Last but not least, you should make a round tour of the nation’s capital, Nicosia.

In Nicosia, we had a very cozy stay at Lordos Hotel Apartments . It is in a calm neighborhood, and the staff was so helpful.

Lodged between the Kyrenia Mountains to its north and the Troodos mountain range to the south, in Nicosia, you can find it all: Cape Greko , Stone Arch, Konnos Beac h , Fig Tree Bay, and the ‘it’ party zone of Europe- Ayia Napa and its Nissi Beach !

Popular for its remarkable beaches, its wind-down lifestyle, and the beat of music echoing around town, Nicosia makes a fit destination for all travelers out there!

Roam in Nicosia Streets

In the morning, visit Nicosia’s Ledras Street to wake up properly over a rich cup of Cyprus-original coffee.

As the town is governed by two different rulers, it might be interesting to see both sides at once- the southern part, ruled by Greece, and the northern part, ruled by the Turks. Interestingly, just a walk around the neighborhood will bring you closer to the city’s very own street border- the actual place that parts the two governments.

Nonetheless, a city of contrasts treats you with a walk down Buyuk Han , an oriental market located on the Turkish side of town. Here, you will find countless antique shops, local dining spots, and souvenir stands, where all gifts and products are fairly priced and super-original.

Head to Ayia Napa

As far as Ayia Napa is concerned, it is a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Nicosia and easily reachable with an intercity bus or a car. Once you arrive in Ayia Napa , don’t be surprised to find the town empty midday- after all, here, true life begins after 8 pm and lasts until 11 in the morning.

south cyprus tourist map

In the meantime, everyone’s at the beach or asleep!

In Ayia Napa, we stayed at the Anonymous Beach Hotel . It was really calm and offered a generous breakfast. We also thought about Papouis Protaras Hotel as an alternative which also looked quite interesting.

Recommended time: 3-5 hours in Ayia Napa, 2-3 hours in Nicosia Recommended dining spots: Louis Tavern & Restaurant. Sushitime Nicosia, Roof Burger Bar

Bonus Cyprus Itinerary Hotspots

Keep in mind, five days should be just enough to cover the island from top to bottom.

But, if it seems like too much for such a short time, some of the places can always be included as a bonus in your itinerary.

Stavrovouni Monastery

Perched on a 2,260-foot (689-metre) peak on the Stavrovouni hill overlooking a wide valley in the Larnaca district is the eponymous Stavrovouni Monastery. You can arrive at the monastery by car from Larnaca. It is about a 35-minute drive from the city to the monastery itself. When visiting, know that taking pictures or recording inside the monastery is prohibited while a free parking lot is available in its surroundings.

south cyprus tourist map

Credits: The Island of Cyprus

the Avakas Gorge

Between Lara Beach and Coral Bay is another popular attraction for those adventurous souls: the Avakas Gorge. Located just about 16km west of Paphos. While you can travel by car, it might be preferable to take a 4×4 terrain vehicle to properly penetrate the region.

south cyprus tourist map

Of course, a bit of hiking is inevitable and desirable, and you can find the main car parks down by the sea and begin your on-foot journey from there. Be advised, as you might not be able to visit the gorge in winter due to the increased level of the river.

10 Top Tourist Attractions in Cyprus

By Fiona Fiorentino · Last updated on October 3, 2023

The easternmost island in the Mediterranean Sea, Cyprus is an independent nation with a long and colorful past. Legend has it that Cyprus was the birthplace of Aphrodite, and it’s easy to understand why the ancients chose this appealing island to worship the Greek goddess of love. With its mild climate, beautiful beaches, forested mountains and lush green valleys, Cyprus is the ideal destination for a romantic holiday.

Lovers of history will be enchanted by the ancient attractions in Cyprus as well. The isle is peppered with archeological sites, ruins and remnants of past empires, conquerors and civilizations. Mouth-watering cuisine, a modern infrastructure and a welcoming populace make a vacation in Cyprus a pleasurable experience for any traveler.

10. Kourion [SEE MAP]

Kourion

Scholars believe that the ancient city of Kourion was founded around the 13th century B.C., but it’s the 5th-century Greco-Roman ruins that most attract visitors to the archeological site near the city of Limassol. Perched on a hill overlooking Episkopi Bay, the tumbled homes, temples and public buildings of the Kourion complex make it easy to imagine what life was like on Cyprus two thousand years ago. Standout sites include the remains of Roman baths, an open Agoura, a temple to Apollo and an amphitheater where classical plays are still performed today.

9. Kolossi Castle [SEE MAP]

Kolossi Castle

Situated near the southern tip of Cyprus, Kolossi Castle is a three-story keep built as a military fortress for the Crusaders of the High Middle Ages. From the 13th to 15th century, the fortress was controlled by the Hospitallers known as the Knights of St. John and was later taken by their rivals, the Knights Templar. While not much remains of the original complex beyond the sturdy stone walls of the keep, a spiral staircase leads visitors to the roof-top battlements for breathtaking views of the vineyard-covered peninsula and blue Mediterranean Sea.

8. Omodos Village [SEE MAP]

Omodos Village

Located in the Troodos Mountains near the city of Nicosia, Omodos Village is the premier destination for wine aficionados in Cyprus. Wine-tasting stalls offer samples of local varietals like Mavro and Xynisteri, and restaurants and bars serve traditional fare. With its cobbled streets, stone houses and lush gardens, Omodos is well worth visiting for its beauty and charm as well. The town’s 17th-century monastery is home to several museums, including an icon museum that features extraordinary wood carvings as well as an extensive collection of icons.

7. Zenobia Wreck Diving [SEE MAP]

Zenobia Wreck Diving

In 1980, the Swedish ferry Zenobia began listing to port during her maiden voyage off the coast of Cyprus, eventually capsizing outside Larnaca Harbor. The ship sank slowly, coming to rest on her port side in one piece. Today, the wreck of the Zenobia is ranked as one of the world’s best diving sites. Easy accessibility, mild currents and temperate water temperatures bring around 45,000 divers to the wreck each year. Although the ship’s many intact rooms are open for exploration, inexperienced divers are encouraged to confine their dive to the outside of the ship where they can view sea life from groupers to barracudas.

6. Tomb of the Kings [SEE MAP]

Tomb of the Kings

The Tombs of the Kings near Paphos is a large necropolis dating back to the 4th century BC. The tombs are carved out of the solid rock and decorated with Doric columns. Despite the name there is no evidence of any royalty buried here. Instead the site was the final resting place of Ptolemaic aristocrats and high officials. The tombs are unique in Cyprus, being heavily influenced by ancient Egyptian tradition, when it was believed that tombs for the dead should resemble houses for the living. The 7 excavated tombs are scattered over a wide area. The most impressive is No 3, which has an open atrium below ground level, surrounded by columns.

5. Nissi Beach [SEE MAP]

Nissi Beach

The most popular of the many beaches that grace the shores of the resort city of Ayia Napa, Nissi is best known for its lively beach party scene. Young people flock to its powder-white sands to sip libations at the famous Nissi Bay Beach bar where DJs play music day and night. Like all the beaches in Ayia Napa, there’s a water sports center in Nissi where visitors can enjoy everything from paragliding and windsurfing to water-skiing and pedal boating. Shallow crystal-clear water makes Nissi Beach perfect for wading and swimming as well. The beach takes its name from the small islet located close to the coast. The uninhabited island can be easily reached on foot through the shallow waters and provides good shelter.

4. St. Hilarion Castle [SEE MAP]

St. Hilarion Castle

Spread over the top of a rocky crag near the city of Girne off the northern coast of Cyprus, St. Hilarion Castle is the best preserved of the island’s 11th-century fortifications. Originally a monastery, the fortress gets its name from a local ascetic and hermit known as Hilarion, who attracted a group of devout followers during the 4th century. A 20-minute hike from Girne takes visitors up past the castle’s stables and soldiers’ quarters to the royal residence and church. A restored staircase leads to a hilltop guard tower where visitors can enjoy a panoramic vista of the mountains, valleys and shoreline.

3. Agios Lazaros Church [SEE MAP]

Agios Lazaros Church

Situated in the town center of the southern city of Larnaca, the Church of Saint Lazarus is a 9th-century monument to the man that Christians believe Jesus raised from the dead. According to tradition, Lazarus fled to Cyprus to escape persecution and served as the city’s first bishop for thirty years. Built over Lazarus’ second tomb, the Byzantine church was refurbished in the Baroque style during the 1800s with Greek Orthodox ornamentation. Although the tomb now stands empty, renovations made after a fire occurred in 1970 found relics of the saint in a marble sarcophagus located under the altar.

2. Kykkos Monastery [SEE MAP]

Kykkos Monastery

Nestled in the hills west of the inland city of Pedoulas stands the Kykkos Monastery, a gorgeous Byzantine complex founded in the late 11th century. While all of the original structures were destroyed by fire, a no-expense-spared renovation begun in 1831 restoring the monastery to its original glory. Each building, particularly the chapel, is heavily ornamented in the Greek Orthodox style with murals lining the walls, indoors and out. The most prized artifact in the wealthiest monastery in Cyprus is a portrait of the Virgin Mary believed to have been painted by St. Luke.

1. Paphos Archaeological Park [SEE MAP]

#1 of Tourist Attractions In Cyprus

With artifacts dating back to the Prehistoric Era, the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park located in the southwestern city of Paphos is an archeological treasure trove of ancient monuments, villas and underground tombs. The most impressive sites include Roman villas built around the 3rd century A.D. The ancient homes are named after their preserved mosaic floors, which feature pictorial narratives of Greek and Roman mythology. Nearby in the Agora is the Odeion, a recently restored 2nd-century theater. With its granite columns, thick walls and corner towers, the Saranta Kolones fortress constructed in the 7th century is worth a visit as well.
