Nihombashi Cruise

Historical boat ride on tokyo’s rivers.

Nihombashi Cruise is a boat ride on the Sumida River, starting from its pier at Nihonbashi bridge located in the center of Tokyo. The tour offers a new type of exploration of the Japanese capital through its waterways, large and small.

Boats furrowing the Sumida River are not limited to the shuttles connecting Asakusa to Odaiba and include some that navigate the capital’s rivers on the traces of a long-lost past when Edo used to be a Japanese Venice . You will find one of this history boats quietly moored to its pier under the famous Nihombashi Bridge, in the central Chuo ward. Of a small size, it can accommodate up to fifty passengers and can therefore sneak in almost everywhere.

akihabara cruise

The cruise starts on the Nihonbashi River, in other words Tokyo ’s waterways . Today, channels flow into concrete waterways, but their banks used to shelter many small shops with stalls directly accessible from the water. Then, the boat proceeds to sail away the historical center towards Odaiba and the Bay, giving new perspectives on the ever-changing Tokyo.

Nihombashi Cruise (Tokyo), View on Nihonbashi bridge and the kirin statues

From the water, one is overwhelmed by the numerous bridges and skyscrapers, and most impressed by the iconic Rainbow Bridge . The boat slips along several renowned touristic places, such as Tsukiji Outer Market and the marvelous Hamarikyu garden , of which one can spot the tops of its pine trees. A little bit further lies the bustling Toyosu Island where Tokyo’s new wholesale fish market opened in October 2018. The former industrial facilities of the area are slowly replaced by modern buildings dedicated to leisure activities or accommodation such as the Olympic Village built on Harumi Wharf for the 2020 Olympic Games   🏅 .

Aboard a ship whose size drastically contrasts with the urban landscape’s vertical hugeness, the hair blowing in the wind, one can imagine Tokyo’s maritime life, sometimes discreet, almost forsaken, sometimes exuberant and vivifying. By the way, bringing protection from the sun in summer , and from the cold in winter is highly recommended.

Preserved from mass tourism, Nihonbashi Cruise retains the charm of a bucolic stroll that brings out the capital and its developments, especially the offer of an alternative transportation method , a strategic challenge considering the current and expected touristic growth.

It holds an unimaginable treasure trove of rare electronics, manga , video games , and pop culture -inspired collectibles for purchase, drawing geeks and nerds from remote corners of the planet. If that's you, come with a full wallet and an empty day, because once you walk into Akihabara , you may never want to leave. In the 2017 Survey of Behavioral Characteristics of Foreign Travelers by Country: Ranking of Towns Visited in Tokyo , Akihabara ranked amongst the top ten in all Asian and Western countries. In fact, Akihabara is the second most popular city in Tokyo among foreign tourists, following Asakusa . It is lovingly known as 'Akiba' by people worldwide. Sadly, this Electric Town's colors have started to fade over the past few years. However, many shops still sell goods you can only find in Akihabara . People from all circles gather from all over to enjoy shopping in Akihabara for models, anime, and electronic parts . The industries that support Akihabara were greatly affected by the pandemic and the sharp tourism decrease since 2020. Many of them are still closed, despite the gradual return of tourists to the area. People worldwide recognize Akihabara as a source of Japan's unique culture, and many await the day that it returns to its former vibrancy.

How much time should I spend in Akihabara?

You need to spend between half a day to one full day, browsing through stores, buying from bins of second-hand goodies, sampling local grub, and dropping by maid cafes . Conventional sightseers unfamiliar or uninterested in Japanese pop culture should also make a trip to Akihabara as a part of their Tokyo exploration. Leaving Japan without spending at least one afternoon taking in its unique atmosphere would be a crime. Plus, besides the flashy neon streets, Akihabara offers reflective strolls through ancient shrines , lunch at famous restaurants, and colorful drinks & desserts to savor. In other words, it's absolutely unmissable!

a. Maid Cafes and other themed cafes

Maid Cafes Maid Cafes in Akihabara are, as the name suggests, cafes with staff dressed up as maids. Tourists and locals flock to them to be served beverages like beer, coffee, tea, and snacks by cutely dressed women in French-style Maid outfits. While this may seem odd to foreigners, maids have been a recurring theme in Japanese media like manga and anime for years. Book your maid cafe spot to enjoy this quintessential Akihabara attraction. Most of the Maid Cafes are family-friendly, but it would be wise to reach out to the place before bringing in your little ones.

Around May 15 in odd-numbered years, you can also experience the Kanda Festival in Akihabara . The highlight is a Jidai Gyoretsu, a procession of 2,000 people dressed in historical costumes, centered around three beautiful portable shrines . Most shops sell goods at below-market prices, so you can always find a good deal. Tourist facilities are always available, too. As you can see, Akihabara is a great city to visit, regardless of the season . (*Date/time of pedestrian paradise and shop business hours subject to changes, cancellations, and closings.)

Akihabara (Ht), also called Akiba after a former local shrine , is a district in central Tokyo that is famous for its many electronics shops and has also gained recognition as the center of Japan's otaku (diehard fan) culture. Many shops and establishments devoted to anime and manga are dispersed among the electronic stores in the district. On Sundays, Chuo Dori, the main street through the district, is closed to car traffic from 13:00 to 18:00 (until 17:00 from October through March).

Akihabara has seen some redevelopment over the past years, which added some large, modern buildings to the mix of small to medium-sized shops and buildings. Most prominent among them is a huge Yodobashi electronics store just next to the station.

akihabara cruise

Electronics

Hundreds of electronics shops, ranging from tiny one-man stalls specializing in a particular electronic component to large electronics retailers, line the main Chuo Dori street and the crowded side streets around Akihabara. They offer everything from the newest computers, cameras, televisions, mobile phones, electronics parts and home appliances to second-hand goods and electronic junk.

A few chain stores such as Sofmap and Laox each operate multiple specialized branches along the main roads, while small independent shops can be found in the side streets. The only mega sized store is the Yodobashi Camera complex on the east side of the station.

Note that some of the electronics on sale are only intended for use in Japan due to voltage and other technical differences , Japanese language documentation and limited warranties. However, several stores also feature a selection of international models intended for overseas use, and most also offer tax-free shopping to foreign tourists.

Otaku goods

The character of Akihabara has constantly changed over the decades and continues to do so. In recent decades Akihabara has emerged as a center of Japanese otaku and anime culture, and dozens of stores specializing in anime, manga, retro video games, figurines, card games and other collectibles have filled the spaces between the electronics retailers.

In addition to shops, various other animation-related establishments have become popular in the area, particularly maid cafes where waitresses dress up and act like maids or anime characters, and manga cafes ( manga kissa ), a type of internet cafe where customers can read comics and watch videos in addition to having access to the internet.

Akihabara—Japan's electric town is the epicenter of otaku culture, anime and offbeat cafes

Once all about gadgets and the latest electronics, Akihabara is now an even mix of electrical goods megastores, maid cafes and all things anime. To go with its transformation, it has a new nickname—Akiba.

  • Retro video game retailer Super Potato
  • Visiting a themed cafe
  • Handicraft shopping at 2k540

How to Get There

Akihabara Station is on the JR Yamanote and JR Sobu lines. It can also be accessed by the Keihin Tohoku Line, TX Tsukuba Express, and Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line.

Akiba's past

Akihabara got its nickname Electric Town from the black market that sprouted there after WWII. Common items being sold at the time included wires, cables, light bulbs and other electrical items.

The alleys and small shops that flourished in Akihabara's heyday still remain, somewhat intact, in arcades like Radio Kaikan and in a few other places mostly near the JR Sobu Line tracks.

As Japan grew more prosperous, Akihabara became a magnet for electric appliance manufacturers. The mega shops specializing in household electronics competed for Japanese customers buying their first fridges, televisions, washing machines and air conditioners.

This made Akihabara an icon of Japanese prosperity in the 1970s. But as these appliances became commonplace, Akihabara shifted towards calculators and watches, toys and games, and from the 1990s, computers and other technology.

Akiba—the hub of Japan's otaku culture

While shops offering a reminder of the old Akihabara do still exist, today's Akiba is focused on otaku culture, including anime, manga, smartphones, games, maids and cosplay. Loosely translated "otaku" means "geek." But unlike the connotations "geek" has in English, "otaku" is more of a cultural identity that self-proclaimed sorts assume with pride.

Retro gaming heaven

Super Potato is a famous video game store that epitomizes the otaku lifestyle. It is located in a small, nondescript building near an alley where maids and other Akiba mainstays hand out leaflets.

Decked out with retro games over three floors, relive your childhood by wandering through aisles of original Nintendo (Famicon) and game consoles including Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and the original Game Boy. It is also home to a game arcade that features, of course, games from the 1980s and 1990s.

While there are other stores that also sell retro games, but for fans both domestic and abroad, Super Potato is known as "the place where otaku go."

Not your average cafes

Akiba is home to many maid cafes, which are essentially cosplay restaurants where waitresses dressed as maids serve their "masters," or visitors.

There is also a slew of animal cafes where you can hang out with owls, cats, otters, rabbits or hedgehogs over your afternoon cup of coffee, as well as anime cafes, like one themed on the Gundam series.

J-Pop's biggest idol group

Akiba is the birthplace of one of J-Pop's most prominent and lucrative girl groups, AKB48. AKB stands for "Akiba," or "Akihabara," while 48 is the number of members in the group. Unsurprisingly, Akiba is where idols—and not just AKB48—tend to hold fan meets for their mainly otaku fanbase.

These events are made far more fascinating by the light-stick waving otagei, which refers to the cheering gestures by high-spirited otaku fans.

Another Akiba

The 2k540 Aki-Oka Artisan is another world altogether in Akiba, beneath the JR Yamanote Line tracks running between Akihabara and Okachimachi stations.

Here, you will find artisan crafts from across Japan, made with such attention to detail and design that they will be difficult to find anywhere else in the world. These products include textiles, pottery, furniture, stationery, clothing and even hats.

A final word on... food

People tend to spend a long time when they visit Akiba, often all day. Hence, there is an abundance of food options for shoppers and otaku alike.

You will be surprised by the range of eateries serving up good, inexpensive curry, ramen, or other hearty meals in Akiba; a budget gourmet's paradise for the quality, price, and sheer variety of options.

Located less than 20 minutes from Shinjuku Station, this is the otaku capital of Tokyo —a place for collectors, gamers and cosplayers. Think dark arcades, packed collector shops and myriad gachapon capsule toy machines. But, Akihabara has another nickname: electric town. It’s also the place to go hunting for diodes and spare parts, or a talking washing machine from Yodobashi Camera by the station. The electronics shops here are a go-to for tax-free shoppers, as are the maid cafes and idol performances by local men. Akihabara also has a gentler, historic side and is great for photography, take a walk and see what you can find. While you’re in the area, you could explore the nearby neighbourhoods of Ueno and Asakusa or the imperial Palace. There’s a lot to see, so for the lowdown on the best things to do in Akihabara, check out the articles below.

7 Geeky Things to Do in Akihabara, the Tech Capital of Japan

Dear reader: This article contains links to products and services that I may be compensated for, at no extra cost to you.

Anyone with a passion for technology should be aware of Akihabara. The buzzing central-Tokyo district is sometimes even called the “tech capital of the world.” Unsurprisingly the best things to do in Akihabara revolve around tech and otaku (“geek”, or manga and anime lovers) culture.

As one of Tokyo’s most famous and distinct neighborhoods, experiencing otaku culture in Akihabara should be high on your Japan bucket list , right up there with places like Mount Fuji and Kyoto , even if you’re not a tech junkie. Of the many quirky things to do in Tokyo (for example, experiencing not one but two cat streets ), several of them can be enjoyed in Akihabara. If this sounds fun to you, then Akihabara is also one of the best places to stay in Tokyo !

The name Akihabara is derived from Akiba, a fire controlling deity connected with a firefighting shrine built after a fire destroyed the area in 1869 (not to be confused with the Great Fire of Meireki, some 12 years earlier).

After WWII, the district came to be known as Akihabara Electric Town for its high concentration of electronics stalls and stores, many of which took form to sell leftover supplies from the Japanese and American armies on the black market.

As you can probably imagine, there is a lot more geek appeal to Akihabara than just buying electronics, though. When computer and gaming culture blossomed in the 1990s, Akihabara transformed into a veritable otaku magnet. Akihabara is replete with stores selling all manner of video games, manga, anime, and associated paraphernalia, not to mention maid cafés and more. For anyone interested in the quirkier side of Japan, Akihabara surely deserves a spot on your Tokyo itinerary !

Here are seven ideas for geeks in the holy grail of technology, in what is without any doubt one of the best cities to visit in Japan . Japanophiles: get out your pencils (or digital notepads) and start taking notes!

Also see the end of the article for the best geeky hotels in Akihabara , some of the coolest places to stay in Tokyo !

Top Geeky Akihabara Attractions

Read to get your nerd on? Here’s are seven geeky ways to pass the time in Akihabara, Tokyo!

Cruise Around Akihabara in Go-Karts

Mario go-karting in Akihabara

Probably the hottest of the many things to do in Tokyo these days is to zip around in a go-kart. If this sounds more adventurous than geeky, think again! You can choose to do it in full on cosplay gear !

Another option is this MariCar Go-Kart deal, where you can do it dressed as your favorite cartoon or Mario Kart character!

The go-karts can travel up to 60 km/hr, and you are free to drive anywhere you want in Akihabara or beyond, with options from 1 to 3 hours. What are you waiting for? And don’t forget your camera gear!

If you’re looking to get out of Tokyo for a day, check out my guides to planning a Mt. Fuji day trip and how to plan a Kamakura day trip .

Discover Akihabara’s Roots at Akihabara Radio Centre

Akihabara Radio Center, one of the best things to do in Akihabara for otaku

Go back to where it all started, the Akihabara Radio Center, for a taste of the original Akihabara Electric Town. Opened in 1949, the center was devoted to radio, transmission, and later, computer parts. Rows upon rows of shelves and crowded back-alleys bursting at the seams with every electronic part imaginable.

It is said that you could literally built a PC from scratch with these parts (Geeks: you have officially been challenged!) For an online version of the kind of stuff available there, check out RS , just to give you an idea.

The Akihabara Radio Center is only about a minute from JR Akihabara station, but keep your eyes peeled, as the entrance is easy to miss!

Sip Cute Lattes in a Maid Café

What do do in Akihabara? Visit a maid cafe!

So what’s the deal with maid cafés? As the name suggests, patrons are served by young women dressed in kawaii (cute) costumes or as maids. You may pose for photos with the maids (often this requires an extra charge; make sure to ask first!), or in some cafés listen to them sing songs. The food of course tends towards the cute, as does the décor. Usually there is a minimum charge around ¥500-1000.

Above all, remember not to be a creep here. Do as the Japanese do; be polite and quiet, never touch the girls, and don’t be surprised if you end up giving free English lessons to the maids or other customers.

We recommend Maidreamin Tokyo (11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. weekdays, 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. weekends), where the service is great and the foods are served extra kawaii . Desserts are especially recommended, and some visitors report you may have to meow to get service.

Learn about Robots at Tsukumo Robot Kingdom

Tsukumo Roboto Kingdom, one of the best things to do in Akihabara

Now that we’ve jumped from go-karting to radio parts to cosplay maids, it’s time for some robots!

This specialized retail store sells everything you could think of related to robotics, including impressive ready-made robots, along with everything that you need to make your own robot. Make sure to check out the bipedal humanoid robots that can walk, or the robot racing section. They’ve even got electronic robot kits for kids!

Find the shop on the 4th floor of the Tsukumo PC Store II in the center of Akihabara, a short walk west of Akihabara station.

Peruse Manga and more at Mandarake Complex

Reading manga at Mandarake Complex, Akihabara

Mandarake is widely considered to be the biggest manga and anime store in the entire world. This otaku’s paradise is filled with second-hand goods that include games, dolls, magazines and just about anything related to manga and anime fathomable. Today we will be looking at a selection of the best places and shops in Akihabara, some well known and others more obscure, to help give you a well-rounded guide to Tokyo’s most famous pop culture center.

How to Get to Akihabara

There are five different train lines you can use to get to Akihabara, making it easy to access from pretty much any part of the Tokyo metropolitan area: JR Chuo-Sobu Line, JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, JR Yamanote Line, Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, and the Tsukuba Express.

To save money on transport, we recommend using either the JR Pass or Tokyo Subway Ticket , both which can be bought online. Alternatively, consider getting the Suica transport card which can be used on both JR lines or the subway.

First, Explore the Famous Akihabara Street of Chuo-Dori

Chuo-dori Avenue is Akihabara's main street and one of the first destinations for any new Tokyo traveler. With just one stroll through the street, you can quickly knock out some of Akihabara's best shops, though we personally believe the real charm of the area lies off the beaten path. Part of the fun is the exploration, so instead of us listing specific places to visit on Chuo-dori, we hope you'll visit and see the sights for yourself.

Check Out Some of the Best (Most Popular) Shops and Places in Akihabara

Bookoff akihabara ekimae store.

BOOKOFF is a nationwide chain that mainly deals in used books and manga, and also offers a selection of used DVDs, CDs, video games, and more. Used items in Japan are usually in quite good condition, so BOOKOFF is a great way to hunt down something you're looking for and save a few yen. The Akihabara location is particularly worth visiting due to its large selection of used electronics in addition to printed media. Try wandering through the many shelves until you find something that strikes your fancy!

Yodobashi Camera Multimedia Akiba Store

Yodobashi Camera is a chain that mainly stocks electronics of all kinds. The store in Akihabara is particularly well known for its size; with 8 floors and a basement level stocked with everything from computers to vacuums, HD TVs, and even fax machines (yes, those still exist in Japan!), it is a great place to get souvenirs and new high-tech electronics to bring back home and impress your friends. If you're not interested in electronics, they also stock popular cosmetics, delicious snacks, and even children's toys, making it an amazing one-stop shop for any of your shopping needs. If you show your passport with a tourist visa, you can enjoy duty-free purchases as well!

GIGO Akihabara

GIGO arcades are present throughout Japan, and there are multiple complexes found along the main street of Akiba. Claw machines, rhythm and beat games, and everything from retro video game corners to Japan's latest and greatest arcade fare can be found here. You can spend hours trying your hand at all the games here, but it can be just as entertaining to glimpse the hardcore gamers in their element.

It should be noted that smoking is allowed indoors on some of the floors, so be prepared for potential culture shock if you're from a country where indoor smoking is banned. In addition, snapping a photo is allowed, but taking videos within the arcade is prohibited, so please be mindful of the rules. Some popular games even require you to sign a form and wait in line for your turn, so if you see a crowd of people, look out for a sign up form nearby.

animate Akihabara

Whether you're looking for anime merchandise, manga, or the latest games, animate has you covered. While the flagship store is in Ikebukuro, another one of Tokyo's otaku paradises, the one in Akihabara is well worth seeing as it covers two different buildings, making it one of the larger branch stores in Japan. Apart from endless rows of merchandise and gacha machines , you'll find an event space and even a themed cafe.

Kanda Myojin Shrine

With nearly 1,300 years of history, Kanda Myojin Shrine has been worshipped by both the general public as well as notable figures such as shogun (military dictator) Ieyasu Tokugawa. Today, it is most known for its Kanda Matsuri, a festival held every odd-numbered year in May where a parade is led from the shrine and through Tokyo's central districts such as Nihonbashi and Otemachi, drawing in crowds from all around. Many people also visit for its unique omamori charms , which are often themed around popular anime or even technology to match Akihabara's eclectic, geeky culture. No visit to Akihabara is complete without buying one of these charms to take back home!

Dive Into the Akihabara “Underground” by Checking Out Akihabara’s Hidden Gems

Super potato akihabara branch.

Any fan of retro video games will surely be enchanted the moment they step into Super Potato. This used video game shop has three floors of software and hardware, including rare and limited edition items from the likes of Nintendo, Sega, Sony, and more. On the top floor is a retro video game arcade where you can revisit an age gone by awash in the beeps and bloops of childhood memories.

Mandarake Complex Akihabara Branch

Mandarake has a number of locations across Tokyo, but the Akihabara branch, with its imposing, all-black exterior, is perhaps the most impressive. This location features eight floors full of antique toys, independently published manga, video games, and more.

As we mentioned above, buying used goods in Japan is usually an affordable way to get a hold of rare items, and Mandarake caters to both this bargain-hunting crowd and the hardcore collectors who are willing to drop a considerable sum for the rarest items to complete their collection. Walking the jam-packed aisles of Mandarake is an adventure in itself, and around every corner is a new oddity or surprise waiting to be discovered.

Akihabara Gachapon Kaikan

Gachapon is the Japanese name for vending machines that dispense capsule toys. You'll find these vending machines all throughout Japan, but particularly so in Akihabara. One location in particular, Gachapon Kaikan, or Gachapon Hall, is known as the holy land for gacha enthusiasts. Gachapon Kaikan has been in operation for over a decade, and the whole store is packed with gacha machines sure to meet everyone’s tastes. From cute and wacky to cool and handy, the collectibles available in these are machines make for great souvenirs for yourself or friends back home.

Akihabara Rare Vending Machine Corner

At first glance, this innocuous little street filled with vending machines may not seem so special. However, if you take a closer look at what's actually being sold, you will understand why this corner of Akihabara has generated a bit of buzz in the past. A standard selection of drinks are sold next to stag beetles, batteries, bells, and other things that don't start with the letter B! If you'd like to read up on this oddity and other bizarre vending machines across Japan, please have a look at our roundup of 10 off-the-wall vending machines in Japan !

Snap Some Great Pictures at Akihabara's Top Photo Spots

Chuo-dori street.

On Sundays, the street closes to all vehicles, making it pedestrian heaven. Chuo-dori is at its busiest then, as most Japanese have Sundays off. Contrary to popular belief, this makes it the best day to take photos that truly capture the essence of this lively part of Tokyo. If you've ever seen photos of Akihabara's streetscape, chances are it was taken at Chuo-dori on a Sunday!

Sunday pedestrian-only times: October - March: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm April - September: 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm *Might be cancelled on days with bad weather.

Mansei Bridge

One look at the above photo should make it clear why Mansei Bridge is such a good photo spot for capturing Akihabara's streetscape. Nearby, you'll find plenty of stores and eateries, so after you're done snapping a few pictures, why not explore and then sit down and admire the view while chomping down on some delicious food?

Even with all the locations mentioned in today’s list, there are still many more stores and surprises waiting for you all over the streets of Akihabara. If you are a fan of otaku culture, you may find yourself coming back again and again during your stay in Japan.

Akihabara is nirvana for techies. Tokyo's premier electronics district, which is also referred to as "Akiba," has gadgets of all kinds found in booths on side streets and main street mega department stores. You'll spot the latest technology on the shelves, which will probably put your equipment to shame. And if you're in the market for hard-to-find bibs or bobs, you're likely to find that here, too. If you're unsure where to start, stop at the larger-than-life Yodobashi Camera store (often billed as the largest electronics store in the world) or stroll along the neighborhood's main street, Chuo Dori, which becomes car-free on Sundays for select hours. In addition to being an electronics hub, Akihabara also caters to serious gamers, anime and manga lovers. Here, you'll find loads of gaming arcades as well as shops and street stalls selling comics and character figurines. You'll also probably spot a few cosplayers casually walking down the street.

While Akihabara is no doubt unique, recent travelers had mixed reviews about the district. Those who expressed interest in anime loved their visit, saying you can't leave Tokyo without experiencing the world Akihabara has to offer for fans. Those without a greater interest in the subject matter enjoyed the buzzing activity and plethora of neon signage that permeated the area, but ended up growing bored after a period of time. Some were offended by the inappropriate nature of some of the anime culture (think: maid cafes), so this area may not be suitable for all travelers. Visitors solely interested in shopping for electronics felt overwhelmed by the options and recommended researching in advance to maximize your time in the neighborhood.

Akihabara sits in central Tokyo and is accessible via the metro. The closest train stop is Akihabara on both the JR Yamanote and Tokyo metro lines. Although you can visit the neighborhood anytime and it's free to explore, individual stores have their own hours. For more information, check out the Akihabara district's website .

#1 Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

Just to the west of downtown Tokyo lies a gorgeous urban oasis. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden comprises 144 acres of green space and is unique in that it incorporates three landscaping styles – Japanese traditional, French formal and English garden. During the spring, the park gets an extra boost in visitors for its vibrant display of cherry blossoms. If you plan on visiting during this beautiful time, make like a local and come to the park equipped with picnic supplies. Autumn is another popular time to visit thanks to the bright fall foliage, which usually peaks between mid-November and mid-December.

Travelers say the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Even if you don't have a couple hours to spare for a picnic, visitors say a short stroll is enough to take up the park's peaceful atmosphere. Akihabara | Anime Game Travel Guide

Mecca of electronics and otaku | tokyo.

Featured Destination on our Anime Japan Tours and Tokyo Game Show Tours. Akihabara is the name for the area around Akihabara station in downtown Tokyo, often referred to as Akiba by the local Japanese people. Sometimes called Akihabara Electric Town , the area is well known for selling a wide variety of electronic goods, mainly focusing on household electronics. Once computers became widely available to the public, specialized stores for computers were integrated into the area as well. Although more recently (and arguably more well-known today), Akihabara has become the center of otaku culture in Japan and most of the stores you find will be related to anime, manga, and/or video games. Attracting anime enthusiasts every day, it is no surprise to see people in cosplay walking along the streets as they shop in Akiba. Many of the stores in Akihabara cater to anime and cosplay enthusiasts with great outfit accessories, exclusive Japanese video games, and limited edition collectible anime memorabilia. Find great exclusive anime and video game goods while traveling through the anime capital of the world.

Maid Cafes and Anime Game Themed restaurants

Another big part of "Akiba" culture are the maid cafes that are located all over the area with a number of the "maids" handing out flyers, looking for any potential customers. Note, most maids do not allow their photos to be taken due to corporate or personal reasons. Therefore, maids cannot take pictures when handing out fliers or while working. And Akihabara has numbers of unique themed cafes and restaurants, and they are popular tourist attractions today such as "MONSTER HUNTER" BAR, LUIDA'S BAR, Final Fantasy Eorzea Café, and Square Enix Cafe. With more tourists and locals visiting Akihabara each day, the area has become a great destination to spend a day during a Tokyo tour.

Cosplay Shops in Akihabara, Tokyo

If you are looking for figurine, manga or games, there are absolutely everywhere in Akihabara and it is not difficult to find at all but the cosplay stuff is just a little bit more hidden away. At ACOS Akihabara, they have a good selection of costumes, accessories, and props. They are a bit expensive but the quality is good and it is a really good investment. You have never seen so many wigs in all the anime hair colors. There is a row of wigs for all the girls from Love Live from both seasons. Don Quijote in Akihabara has a unique floor filled with cosplay outfits and accessories, too. If your budget is low and you feel like buying cheap stuff, try coming to Mitsubado. Of course, the items here are used goods, but the quality is still good and there are lots of cosplay equipment that are very wearable. This shop can be an alternative if you want to save money.

  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
