Alaska Cruises and Trains

Alaska cruise and railroad tours.

The Alaska Railroad tracks run north from Seward, stretching 470 miles through Anchorage, Talkeetna, and Denali National Park to the town of Fairbanks. The two primary cruise ports in the region are in Whittier and Seward. You can easily take the train to or from your cruise ship in both communities.

If you are travelling on a northbound cruise, you can catch the train to Anchorage in the evening from either Seward or Whittier. Both train departures are great for those wanting to catch a day cruise to see the glaciers and wildlife out of either port after disembarking their cruise ship. To continue north from Anchorage by rail you will need to overnight and catch another train the following morning. The northbound Denali Star train leaves Anchorage at 8:20am heading north to Talkeetna and Denali National Park. The train arrives into Talkeetna at 11:05am, and Denali National Park at 3:40pm. The same train continues on to Fairbanks departing Denali National Park at 4:00pm, and arriving into Fairbanks at 8:00pm.

If you prefer to disembark the cruise ship and go directly north to either Talkeetna or Denali National Park, you can book a seat on the Park Connection Motor Coach . This is the only scheduled service available that will allow you to travel from the port to either of the above locations in one day.

If you are cruising southbound and want to tour by train before your Alaska cruise, you will want to fly into either Anchorage or Fairbanks. Anchorage has the largest airport in Alaska, and most travelers choose that option. From Anchorage you can take the train directly to your cruise ship port city, either Seward or Whittier. You can also do a short land tour north to Denali National Park and or Talkeetna.  If you are short on time, consider returning to Whittier or Seward on the motorcoach . This is the only scheduled service that will allow you to travel to your cruise port from either Denali Park or Talkeetna in the same day.

Remember, we are happy to help with your trip, not only the train services and motorcoach transfers, but we can arrange complete pre and post cruise land packages as well.

Explore Alaska By Train – Alaska Train Tours

Experience Alaska by Train as part of your Alaska cruise vacation. Book this shore excursion as part of your Alaska cruise to experience Alaska's beauty.

An Alaska train trip is one wild ride. Alaska trains go into the backcountry where cars cannot, and the scenery is spectacular. Ride over salmon-filled streams, through mountain tunnels, and on the edge of narrow cliffs. There are three main options for Alaska train tours: the McKinley Explorer® (part of an Alaska cruise tour), the Alaska Railroad, or the White Pass & Yukon railway.

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about Alaska trains.

What Is An Alaska Train Tour?

An Alaska train tour can be just a few hours long, or last several days on a journey along the Alaska coast or into the wild interior. On Holland America Line Alaska cruisetours, you can take a train to Alaska on the McKinley Explorer®, a domed train specifically used for transporting passengers back and forth from Anchorage to Denali National Park & Preserve.

Another Alaska train tour is the  White Pass Summit Scenic railroad  in Skagway. The White Pass & Yukon Railway links Skagway and Whitehorse and takes a narrow-gauge ride in the historic path of prospectors. Pass Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, Dead Horse Gulch plus tunnels, trestles, and more on these Alaska train rides. And all of this aboard a vintage rebuilt or replica train car. Find this  Alaska shore excursion  and more.

Do Alaska Train Tours Offer Food And Drink?

Yes. On the McKinley Explorer®, guests can order breakfast and lunch in the lavish dining area, and soft drinks and cocktails throughout the trip. The menu options range from simple fare to fine dining and a range of desserts, like salted caramel brownie sundaes. The Denali train tour takes about eight hours and chugs into its destination just in time for dinner. Read a cruise diary from a McKinley Explorer guest.

The Alaska Railroad train trips also feature dining options.

What Are The Top Cities To Visit On An Alaska Train Ride?

Most consider Anchorage and Fairbanks the top cities to visit on Alaska train rides. You can travel between Anchorage and Fairbanks on the Alaska Railroad, which also stops in Denali and Talkeetna, a small town known for flightseeing adventures.

Mountains with snow seen on Alaska cruise to Anchorage.

Anchorage  started as a railroad construction camp — it is now a metropolis and the hub for Alaska train rides. Nicknamed the Golden Heart City, Fairbanks is a gateway to remote outposts and oil fields, and it still retains its raffish frontier charms. Both are worth a visit. Anchorage is known for moose, coffee, and friendly Alaskans. Fairbanks has Gold Rush history galore.

Kayaking in icy Prince William Sound near Whittier, Alaska

Whittier  is another cruise port that you can visit via Alaska train tours. Nicknamed the “Strangest Town in Alaska,” Whittier hugs the stunning Prince William Sound and almost the whole town lives in the same condo complex. It is only accessible by boat or a tunnel that’s shared by both cars and Alaska trains. Some Alaska cruises port in Whittier.

What Can I See On An Alaska Train Tour?

Train rides to Alaska and rail tours feature amazing scenery, from sparkling rivers to waterfalls and majestic wildlife, like grizzly bears and caribou. It's possible to see some of Alaska’s famous interior sights by rail out of Anchorage.

If you’re traveling by Alaska Railroad, you can take the Coastal Classic Route to Seward and spend the day at Kenai Fjords National Park. Or take the Glacier Discovery Train to backcountry glaciers. The Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop on the Glacier Discover Train delivers passengers into a remote wilderness area and to Spencer Glacier, a river of ice that travels down to Spencer Lake. These Alaska train tours leave from Anchorage and travel into the Chugach National Forest.

Skagway Train Tours

Explore waterfalls, glacial ribers, and stunning terrain on the White Horse & Yukon Railroad from Skagway to the summit of White Pass. It is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and a favorite Alaska shore excursion among Skagway guests.

Denali Train Tours

Book a Holland America Line cruisetour and take an Alaska train trip on the McKinley Explorer® to Denali.

Best Routes For Alaska Train Rides

The McKinley Explorer route to  Denali  is the best route for a luxurious journey between Anchorage and Denali. If you want to explore Seward and Girdwood, the Alaska railroad’s Coastal Classic heads from Anchorage to Seward along the picturesque Turnagain Arm. It then winds through scenic wilderness and stops at Resurrection Bay.

Trains From Anchorage To Denali

The McKinley Explorer® is the best option for those on Alaska cruisetours, as it's tailored for cruise passengers. You can also take Alaska train tours from Anchorage to Denali on the Alaska Railroad’s Denali Star route.

Anchorage To Fairbanks Train Tours

If you want to take Alaska train trips from Anchorage to all the way to Fairbanks, the Alaska railroad is the only option. Many choose to take the Denali Star and stay in Talkeetna or Denali for a few nights, as the trip from Anchorage to Fairbanks is about 12 hours. Many Anchorage hotels will provide shuttles to the train station.

Tour Itinerary

Fairbanks arrival.

Arrive in Fairbanks and transfer to your hotel on own or by courtesy hotel shuttle. Depending on your flight arrival time, you may have time to explore Fairbanks, “The Golden Heart City”. Overnight Fairbanks.

Fairbanks to Denali

Transfer on your own or by courtesy hotel shuttle to the Fairbanks railroad station. At 8:20am depart on a scenic train ride on the Alaska Railroad and travel to Denali. An exciting white water rafting tour awaits you in the afternoon. Choose to paddle or let your rafting guide do all the work on this exciting 2-hour whitewater rafting trip on the Nenana River in Denali. The rapids at Canyon Run on the Nenana River are moderate Class III with one more exciting Class IV rapid. Overnight near the Denali park entrance.

Denali National Park

The park is yours to explore today! In the morning, join a guided hiking tour on the Triples Lakes Trail! The hiking trail begins with a gradual and consistent hill climb providing spectacular views of the Nenana River and the expansive glacially carved Yanert Valley. The trail then descends and levels off to provide access to the three alpine lakes that give this Alaska trail its name. Beautiful views of the lakes, bounded by the elevated ridges, make for some outstanding photo opportunities. This Alaska hike is rated moderately strenuous due to the reasonably steep ascent at the onset of this hike. Tour duration is about 3-4 hours.

If you wish to explore more of the park today, you may want to opt for a bus tour into the park, the Tundra Wilderness Bus Tour (additional charge applies). The total tour lengths is 5 to 6 hours. During the bus ride you have a chance to see more of Denali’s impressive landscapes and to see the parks wildlife such as moose, bear, caribou and perhaps even a wolf.  Another option for the afternoon is an ATV tour where you explore other trails near Denali National Park (see Tour Add-ons).

After an action packed day, relax in the evening. Overnight near the Denali park entrance.

Denali to Anchorage

This morning sleep in or explore more of the Denali area. In the early afternoon, you will continue your train journey south to Anchorage. On board you have the option to purchase dinner or you plan for a later dinner in Anchorage. You arrive in Anchorage at 8:00pm. Transfer to your hotel in Anchorage on own. Overnight Anchorage.

Anchorage to Seward

Wake up very early in the morning and transfer yourself to the Anchorage train station. At 6:45am you depart on the Alaska Railroad and start a 4.5 hour train journey through some of Alaska most scenic and stunning areas. After arrival in Seward, transfer yourself to the Seward Small Boar Harbor. From here, you will depart on a 5-hour boat cruise at 12:00pm.  The boat cruise takes you first to Fox Island, a private island, where you will enjoy lunch. Afterwards you cruise through the waters of Resurrection Bay with its beautiful coastal scenery and opportunities for seeing seabirds and marine wildlife such as Steller sea lion, harbor seal, and with some luck even whales! Overnight Seward.

Today you are in for a treat! On your half day Bear Glacier Kayaking tour, you start out from Seward with a  30-45 minute boat ride. Along the way, there is another opportunity to see Alaska wildlife. When you arrive at the lagoon of Bear Glacier, you will be outfitted with your kayak and gear. Then you kayak through the massive icebergs that are deposited by Bear Glacier, the Harding Icefield’s largest glacier. The lagoon is calm and your kayaking guide will choose the best route to navigate through the maze of ice. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Overnight Seward.

Seward to Anchorage

You spend most of your day in Seward, before you travel back to Anchorage. Maximize your adventure in Seward and opt for the Seward Zipline Tour or a helicopter dog sledding tour! The canopy adventure zipline tour is 3 hours long and features 8 ziplines, 3 suspension bridges and 2 rappels.  The helicopter dog sledding tour is another great Alaska experience. On that tour, you take a short helicopter flight up to the majestic Godwin Glacier, high in the mountains. Upon landing on the glacier, you will meet an eager team of sled dogs and go on a 25-30 minute dog sled ride among incredible Alaska scenery.  These tours are not included and additional cost applies. In the evening, at 6:00pm, you depart Seward on the Alaska Railroad for a 4-hour train journey to Anchorage. Sit back and relax while enjoying stunning views. Upon arrival in Anchorage at 10:15pm, transfer to your hotel on own. Overnight in Anchorage

Anchorage departure

Your trip comes to an end today. Depending on your flight departure, you may have one more chance for an adventure.  Transfer to the Anchorage airport is on your own.

When Is The Best Time Of Year For Whale Watching On An Alaska Cruise? You’re in luck. April to November is the best time to see whales in Alaska and that nicely aligns with the Alaska cruise season. Like most of us, whales enjoy Alaska in the spring and summer months, when the days are long and food is plentiful. Some whales are in Alaska year-round, while others migrate to the state during summer months.

Alaska's impressive southern coastlines contain hordes of island archipelagos, deep fjords and ancient glaciers. Nearly all of the area is roadless, so seafaring vessels, including cruise ships, are a popular way for visitors to experience these pristine areas.

Large cruise companies sail Alaska's Inside Passage from Seattle , Washington and Vancouver , and on through the Gulf of Alaska to Seward or Whittier. In between, passengers usually stop in Ketchikan , Juneau and Skagway , and then sail up College Fjord to see glaciers stretching their icy fingers into the sea. You'll see plenty of stunning scenery along the way but not up close – for most cruisers, it's more than enough to satisfy.

Smaller cruises max out at around 200 passengers and can nose into Southeast Alaska's nooks and crannies, launching skiffs and kayaks from their lower decks for an immersive shore visit full of exploration. These vessels may not stop in local ports, instead anchoring at night and offering guests the chance to hike a remote shoreline, whale-watch from a kayak or attend a presentation by indigenous artisans. If any ports are visited, they're likely to be smaller communities like Wrangell, Sitka, Petersburg and Yakutat.

Additionally, with the Northwest Passage now open to marine traffic, the northwestern city of Nome is a regular port of call for higher-end, midsize cruise lines to expose passengers to the rural reaches of coastal Alaska. The Aleutian Island city of Unalaska is also on some boutique cruise line itineraries, so check carefully that the region that sparks your interest.

Which part of Alaska should I choose to cruise?

For an overview of Alaska The standard Inside Passage cruise between Vancouver or Seattle and Seward or Whittier is an excellent choice, boasting beautiful scenery and the chance to experience a route taken by steamships of the late 1800s. You’ll get a snapshot of the Tongass National Forest , glaciers and the occasional whale or bear, but not up close unless you’re on a specific shore excursion. Holland America, Cunard and Viking all have cruises that fit this itinerary.

Taking a deep dive into Alaska’s coastal regions   Book a small ship cruise between Sitka, Ketchikan, and Juneau for a week or longer in the nooks and crannies of southeast Alaska. You’ll hike where there are no trails, paddle without another human in sight, and get to know the traditional lands of Alaska’s Coastal Native tribes. We like Alaskan Dream Cruises, UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions for smaller, more sustainable cruises.

To discover Alaska’s rich history You can’t skip Ketchikan, Juneau or Skagway on an itinerary. Juneau is the state capital and a former mining community. Ketchikan once was a major player in the timber industry and has a sordid past steeped in bootlegging and brothels. Skagway was a jumping-off point for the Klondike Gold Rush beyond Chilkoot Pass and has an old railroad to prove it. All three cities are often on large ship itineraries.

Explore Alaska’s most remote coastal areas Consider a luxury midsize (or smaller) cruise to places like Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands or to the northwestern city of Nome. Both combine a look at the rugged, raw coastlines with time spent on shore in towns with few frills. Weather can often be cold, rainy and windy, but if you want a unique adventure in Alaska, check out the itineraries from Hurtigruten.

When should I go?

Depending on the cruise line, sailings begin in late April and continue through to early October. The most dependable weather typically appears in July and August, but that's also the most popular (and expensive) time; pick a trip earlier or later in the season for cheaper passage and shore excursions.

For spring and fall passengers, know that temperatures will be cooler than you might expect and variable types of precipitation, including snow showers, aren't unusual. In the summer, it's still cool on deck and near glaciers, so don't expect a lot of outdoor pool time or sunbathing on board.

If spotting wildlife is a priority, consider cruising during the salmon runs, when bears are most active and can be spotted from the decks of the ship. Humpback whales often follow schools of herring and other small fish during the summer and can be seen anytime between May and September before they migrate to Hawaii or Mexico .

How do I know my cruise line is operating sustainably?

While all travel has environmental and cultural impacts, cruising leaves its mark to varying degrees on Alaska's fragile ecosystems. The average large cruise ship can have a carbon footprint greater than 12,000 cars and produce up to a ton of trash each day. While there can be a positive economic impact on ports of call, a small community visited by 15,000 people per day during sailing season can intrinsically change.

The industry's trade group Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) touts a desire for "conscious cruising." They have guidelines for water conservation and upgrades to heating, air-conditioning and ventilation, with a goal for ships to be net zero by 2050. There is also a focus on respecting the cultural traditions of destinations through cooperative regenerative tourism that preserves a community's unique history, culture and values.

A view from the window on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway

What kinds of activities can we experience?

Onshore activities differ depending on the size and style of the cruise. Traditional excursions are created to fit a specific number of people, all of whom come from the ships and are expected to be in port for a specific time. They provide an overview of Alaska's history, culture, recreation and industry, and don't offer much of a personal touch.

Smaller boutique cruises strive to immerse their guests in the wild Alaska they've researched and desire to experience. Trips to shore rarely involve large port cities except for embarking and disembarking – instead, they drop kayaks in the water from the ship or use a rubber skiff to reach a deserted shoreline for a hike. The communities they visit are usually smaller, like Petersburg, Wrangell or Haines.

  • Glacier & Wildlife Tours: Cruise for a few hours aboard a smaller vessel to witness whales, otters, seals and icy glaciers.
  • Dogsledding: Learn about mushing, huskies and the operations of sled-dog kennels before taking a spin behind a team.
  • ATV Adventuring: Rev up for a wilderness or tundra tour aboard a four-wheeler or side-by-side vehicle.
  • Flightseeing:  Take a unique peek at Alaska's landscapes from above, spotting wildlife, and ogling glaciers and mountain ranges.
  • Alaska Native Traditions:  Learn the ways of Alaska's many tribal groups, with dancing, drumming and art displays as part of the program.
  • Ride a Historic Train:  Skagway's White Pass Yukon Railroad climbs over Chilkoot Pass for a hands-on gold-rush history tour.
  • Paddle Power:  Hop in a raft or kayak and explore Alaska's beautiful coastlines and rivers.

Need-to-know before you go

Plan for wet weather Alaska’s southeastern region is part of a rainforest, where wet conditions are the norm even in summer. Bring waterproof rain gear, sturdy shoes, a hat and gloves to stay warm and dry.

Know your physical limits If mobility or other health issues may affect your ability to enjoy a cruise to the fullest, consider traveling with a larger operator. These companies are well-versed in accessibility and have made accommodations for those with mobility needs. Smaller ships are full of trip hazards and watertight door jambs and require bending and stepping up or down to access activities like kayaking or skiff rides.

Plan your own shoreside activities There is no requirement to book excursions or activities through the cruise line. If a more independent style of exploration is your thing, feel free to do your own research ahead of time or visit each port of call’s visitor bureau upon arrival. Just be sure to adhere strictly to the ship’s boarding time.

Look to shoulder season sailings Not only will you often receive a significant discount, you’ll also be able to witness Alaska’s seasonal transitions and fewer crowds at ports of call.

Know what "all-inclusive" really means:  Drill down into the details of your cruise and ask questions about meals, alcoholic beverages, activities and shore trips. It may be that a smaller cruise line will include everything at one price.

#1 Travel tip: Small ship cruises

Some small ship cruises depart from Juneau or Sitka (Alaska), so you’ll need to fly there. It’s best to arrive at least one day before your cruise starts.

Blend two unique experiences into one seamless trip. Dense forests, sky-piercing mountain peaks, icebergs floating in the Inside Passage. Combine an Alaska cruise with a train ride to get the best of both worlds.

Alaska Cruise

The rail portion of your trip can come before or after your Alaska cruise. There are two types of cruise ships to choose from: a larger, more luxurious vessel, or a smaller ship that allows you to visit more coves and inlets. Each type of ship has advantages, and it depends on your style of travel and what you want to get out of your Alaska cruise adventure.

Depending on your schedule, you can enjoy the cruise portion of your trip first or start with a rail journey through the mountains. The Rocky Mountaineer offers three main routes, which can all be paired with an Alaska cruise:

First Passage to the West

This route connects Vancouver and Banff and is the line the company first established when it was founded in 1990. The Rocky Mountaineer is the only passenger train to travel along this famous, historic section of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Memorable spots along the way include the charming train station at Lake Louise, the Stoney Creek Bridge, the dramatic Fraser & Thompson River canyons and the location where the Last Spike was added to the railway in 1885.

Journey Through the Clouds

This route traverses the later of the two main Canadian trans-continental railways: The Canadian Northen Line, which dates back to 1917. It travels between Jasper and Vancouver, taking the breathtaking Yellowhead pass through the mountains. The highlight of the trip is the view of snow-covered Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Rockies.

Rainforest to Gold Rush

This route connects North Vancouver and Jasper, with stops in Whistler and Quesnel. It was previously known as the "Frasier Discovery Route," and the focus is on discovering British Columbia's wild timber country and Gold Rush history. The train passes through the Fraser River Canyon, and it's not uncommon to spot black bears, bald eagles, ospreys and even grizzly bears.

Cruising Through the Inside Passage

Cruise along the cost of Northern BC all the way up to Alaska. This route is sheltered from the Pacific Ocean winds and waves by large islands, such as Pitt Island and Princess Royal Island.

You'll pass remote communities, such as Telegraph Cove, Skagway and Ketchikan, and sail through Glacier Bay National Park—where enormous chunks of ice make a thunderous roar as they crack, split and crash into the sea.

On board the expedition ships .

Expedition Ships are smaller and more agile vessels, with reduced passenger capacity to allow for larger cabins and a less crowded ship.

The small size also allows these vessels to travel to tiny inlets and fjords along the Alaskan coastline that cannot be reached by larger ships. These waters are rich with marine life, including sea lions, orcas and humpback whales — so keep your camera at the ready.

These small ships are always ready for adventure. For example, your vessel may be equipped with a high-tech kayak dock added to the back of the ship, complete with a launching pad that makes it easy for passengers to set off kayaking or stand up paddleboarding in the pristine waters off the Alaskan coast.

Canada was built along the historic Canadian Rail system, so it makes sense that many major Canadian cities are easily accessible by train. With train stations often centrally located within these cosmopolitan cities or remote towns, it is easy to explore the best of Canada by train.

Vancouver

Many Alaska cruise and train packages begin in Vancouver, a vibrant city with high-end restaurants, museums and cultural attractions. Vancouver combines world-class city amenities with hiking trails and other outdoor adventures, making it one of the best places to begin an Alaska cruise and train trip. If you visit during the summer, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the mild climate.

#2 Travel tip: See cruise ships at Canada Place

If you are visiting Vancouver, walk down to Canada Place, an iconic landmark and the city’s cruise terminal. Enjoy the beautiful views as you stroll along the promenade.

Jasper

Enhance your Alaska train/cruise combo with a stop in Jasper, one of Alberta's most beautiful destinations. Jasper is known for its mountain peaks, turquoise waters and hiking trails. The mountain town is also ideal for travellers who want to relax before embarking on an Alaskan cruise.

Banff

Banff is a lively town filled with restaurants and activities for travellers of all ages. It's also the hub of Banff National Park, which is known for its waterfalls, glaciers, lakes and mountain peaks. Banff is a great stop for any Rockies train and Alaska cruise vacation.

Whistler

Some Canadian Rockies train and Alaska cruise vacations include stops in Whistler, a resort town located in British Columbia. Whistler comes alive in the winter due to its popular ski slopes, but it also has golf courses, spas and activities suitable for laid-back travellers. After a day of sightseeing or shopping, unwind at one of Whistler's restaurants.

Kamloops

Kamloops was established by the Shuswap First Nation and served as a trading post before it was incorporated. Whether you visit before or after your Alaskan cruise, Kamloops is a great place to stop on your Canadian rail tour.

Quesnel

If your Alaska cruise and train vacation includes a ride on the Rocky Mountaineer, you'll need a place to stay overnight. Quesnel, a popular destination for nature lovers, fits the bill. It's one of the main stopping points on the route to the Yukon and offers plenty of opportunities to hike, fish and canoe.

Everything lines up perfectly and you only have to book once, ensuring your trip goes so much more smoothly.

What do I do on the train?

It's up to you! You may simply want to unwind, settle in the glass-domed observation car and sip a cup of coffee while you admire the endless vistas of mountains, rivers and pine forests rolling past the windows. (You can bring a book to read, but guests often find they are too distracted by the views to get much reading done!)

Or, you can socialize and get to know your fellow passengers – curious adventurers just like you from around the world. Strike up a conversation over gourmet food and superb Okanagan wine.

Where will the train go?

The Rocky Mountaineer train begins in the unspoiled beauty of the Albertan Rockies and travels southwest through the Cariboo and Monashee Mountains. Some of Canada's most spectacular scenery will roll past your glass-domed train car, from the towering peak of Mount Robson to the crashing water of Pyramid Falls.

Stopping in Kamloops overnight, you'll continue on the next day toward the vibrant seaside city of Vancouver. The dry interior of BC gives way to rushing rivers, dense coastal rainforests and majestic mountains. Have your camera ready, it's likely you'll spot wildlife along the way.

Which cruise lines offer cruise tours to Alaska?

Holland America, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line are just a few of the cruise lines offering tours to Alaska from Canada. They tend to have large, luxury vessels. If you want to explore Alaska's coves and inlets, look for a cruise line with smaller ships.

How many days do you need for Alaska cruise vacations?

For the best Alaska cruise and train package, we recommend setting aside at least 5 to 7 days for the cruise portion of your trip. This will give you enough time for whale watching, exploring Glacier Bay National Park and sightseeing along the Alaskan coast.

What is the most scenic part of Alaska?

Alaska has many scenic destinations, including Sitka, the coastline of Chichagof Island, Glacier Bay National Park, Mendenhall Glacier and Denali National Park.

Is it better to go northbound or southbound on an Alaskan cruise?

In terms of what you see on your cruise, it doesn't matter if you sail northbound or southbound. You'll see all the sights on your itinerary either way. Direction does matter if you're deciding whether to add an Alaskan cruise to the beginning or end of your Canadian train vacation. It all depends on your personal preference and the other stops planned on your trip.

Can you see the Northern Lights while on an Alaskan cruise?

It depends on where and when you travel. The best time to see the Northern Lights while cruising Alaska's waterways is September. It gets darker earlier than it does in the summertime, giving you more opportunities to see this natural phenomenon.

What is the best month to go to Alaska on a cruise?

Alaskan cruise season typically lasts from May through September. July and August are the busiest months, so consider traveling in May or September if you want to beat the crowds. A September cruise is also ideal if you want to see the Northern Lights.

Alaska cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

A laska might be one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it's rugged and can be tricky to get around. Explore the Last Frontier by cruise ship, and you can travel to gold rush towns, glaciers, Alaska Native heritage sites and natural areas brimming with wildlife in comfort, even luxury.

When planning an Alaska cruise, you have many things to consider: when to go for the experience you're anticipating, which cruise line is best suited to your travel style, the best Alaska cruise ports to visit and which shoreside activities you want to prioritize. It's not the kind of trip you want to throw together at the last minute — especially since the best fare deals typically go to organized travelers who book early.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're eager to spot bald eagles in the wild, ride a dog sled atop an ice field or pan for gold after a hearty salmon feast, an Alaska cruise is calling your name. Dive into The Points Guy's Alaska cruise guide for all the planning tips you need for your dream cruise up north.

Why cruise Alaska?

Most people have similar reasons for cruising Alaska. They want to admire its rugged beauty, seek out wildlife (such as eagles, bears and whales) and learn about its Native cultures and gold rush history. It's so far from the rest of the mainland U.S. that it's become a bucket list destination, especially for travelers looking to visit each of the 50 states.

One of the key reasons to cruise Alaska versus taking a land tour is to visit destinations along the Inside Passage that you cannot reach by road. Plus, many of the state's famous glaciers are best viewed from the sea.

If you want to see landlocked areas, such as Denali National Park, you can tack a cruise line-operated tour onto the beginning or end of your sailing for a seamless land and sea vacation. It's easier than fumbling with multiple train, bus, ferry and hotel reservations to cobble together the same trip on your own.

A cruise can also make an Alaska trip more affordable. Instead of taking a long and expensive flight to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can choose a cruise that sails round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver (note, you won't be able to tack on a post-cruise land trip to Denali if you do this). Restaurant prices in Alaska can be high, but a cruise bundles meals, accommodations and transportation into one price that, with sales, can be cheaper than you'd think.

When do cruises go to Alaska?

Nearly every major cruise line has a presence in Alaska from May through mid-September, with some offering sailings as early as April or as late as October. The season is short due to weather. Cold temperatures, icy waters and a long snowy season are not conducive to early spring and late fall cruises.

Alaska cruise weather can be chilly (in the 40s to 50s) first thing in the morning and at night. However, if it's a sunny summer day, temperatures can shoot into the 70s and even low 80s. It also rains a lot in Alaska; it's drier in the spring than in the summer.

When you want to go will depend on which activities you want to do, how you feel about cool weather and rain, and the price. Cruises at the beginning (April and May) and end (September and October) of Alaska's cruise season are generally a bit cheaper than those in June, July and August.

Best Alaska itineraries

Where do Alaska cruises even go? Most sail along the Inside Passage, a maritime route along the state's southern coast (and into British Columbia and Washington state) that weaves around the area's thousand islands. Some venture farther north into the Gulf of Alaska; these are often one-way cruises that begin and end at the ports near Anchorage.

Learn more about the best Alaska cruise itineraries for your next vacation.

Inside Passage

The Inside Passage is the most popular Alaska cruise route. Weeklong itineraries generally embark in either Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia — though some itineraries originate in Juneau. A few lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line, offer 10-night Inside Passage cruises from Seattle or Vancouver.

Glacial ice carved this passageway long ago, and today, cruise ships and fishing vessels thread their way through the islets and channels to see some of the most spectacular natural sights in the world.

You'll find magnificent mountains (often snowcapped, even in the summertime), lush forests, waterfalls, fjords and calving glaciers. If it's marine life you've come to see, you'll find it in abundance, from whales and dolphins to sea lions and harbor seals. On land, you'll likely spy bears and Dall sheep while eagles, puffins and a host of seabirds circle above.

Many people trek to Alaska to commune with nature, but there's also history here that you shouldn't overlook. Shore excursions and onboard lectures will explain the cultures of the Indigenous peoples of Alaska, as well as more recent inhabitants from the Russian community in Sitka and the fortune-seekers who moved to Skagway during the Klondike gold rush in the late 1890s.

Popular Inside Passage ports of call include Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Haines and Skagway. Most cruises will visit three or four ports of call.

Additionally, you'll have one day spent cruising the Inside Passage and one focused on "scenic cruising," where you can enjoy the landscapes but won't go ashore. This is not nearly as boring as you might think since you'll see incredible sights like Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve or Hubbard Glacier .

One nice thing about the Inside Passage is how calm the water is because you're sailing between land masses. If you worry about seasickness, an Inside Passage trip is the best Alaska cruise itinerary versus a sailing where your ship transits rougher, open waters.

Gulf of Alaska

If you book a weeklong Gulf of Alaska voyage, you'll also enjoy exploring parts of the Inside Passage and its ports that could include a mix of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Ketchikan, Haines and Icy Strait Point.

You'll have up to two days of scenic cruising, in addition to sailing the Inside Passage. Because Gulf of Alaska cruises sail farther north, scenic destinations might include College Fjord, in addition to Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.

Generally, these one-way sailings travel from Seward or Whittier (the cruise ports closest to Anchorage) to Vancouver (or vice versa). Most itineraries are seven nights, but you'll find a handful that are longer.

For these itineraries, you'll need to fly into or out of Anchorage and take a train or bus to/from the cruise departure ports, which can take an hour or two. You can book the transportation on your own or through your cruise line.

Gulf of Alaska sailings — especially those in late August and September — can encounter rough seas in the gulf portion of the voyage. Be prepared if you're particularly prone to seasickness.

Related: One-way Alaska cruises vs. round-trip: Which is best?

Longer sailings from the West Coast

Finally, you'll find some round-trip San Francisco itineraries — usually 10 or 11 nights long — as well as longer sailings between San Francisco and Vancouver. These cruises are best suited to travelers who love days at sea.

On a 10-night cruise, you'll have four sea days (for example, two days from San Francisco to Juneau) plus a day of scenic cruising at a spot like Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Endicott Arm, Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park. The waters before you enter the Inside Passage can be calm, rough or anything in between, depending on when you go.

Ports on these longer sailings might include Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point and Victoria, British Columbia.

You can also find one-way repositioning cruises between Southern California ports (Los Angeles and San Diego) and Vancouver at the beginning or end of a ship's Alaska cruise season.

Cruisetours

Cruise lines understand that not all of Alaska's best sights lie along the coast. Denali National Park and the city of Fairbanks are well inland. And some coastal highlights, like the Kenai Peninsula, aren't typically visited on a seven-night cruise. So the cruise lines created their own "cruisetours": vacations that combine a weeklong cruise with a two- to seven-night bus tour.

On a cruisetour, you'll sail on a one-way Gulf of Alaska cruise, so your cruise starts or ends in Alaska. Depending on the tour itinerary you choose, you might visit Seward and the Kenai Peninsula, Alyeska, Talkeetna, Anchorage and Fairbanks — as well as spend one to three nights in Denali National Park.

Some lines also offer Alaska cruisetours that venture into Canada's Yukon, including a few Holland America tours that combine half a cruise with a cruisetour that starts or ends in Skagway.

Your tour might include a ride on the scenic Alaska Railroad . Some activities are included in the cost of the cruisetour; other outings can be booked like shore excursions, depending on your interest and budget. If you're hoping to see the northern lights, booking a cruisetour in September might be your best bet to see the aurora on a cruise vacation.

Best Alaska cruise lines

Most big-ship and luxury cruise lines send at least one cruise ship to Alaska every summer. Some of the best Alaska cruise lines are Holland America and Princess Cruises because they have especially long histories in the region and offer cruises, as well as cruise and land tour combinations, on multiple ships each season.

If you want a more active trip in less touristed areas, a great choice would be a small-ship expedition line, including Alaska specialists such as Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures.

Ships in all price ranges sail a variety of itineraries, so don't let budget stop you from visiting. If luxury is what you're after, you can find lines that will go overboard pampering you on your journey north.

Best cruise lines for extended trips to Alaska

If you want to cruise Alaska but also see some of the interior and enjoy a stay in a lodge or hotel, go for a cruisetour package from either Holland America or Princess Cruises. Both have fantastic itineraries that take passengers not only to the Inside Passage, but also to Anchorage, Denali National Park, the Yukon, Kenai Peninsula, Talkeetna and Fairbanks. Princess even owns a handful of its own lodges.

Best Alaska cruises for families with kids

Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean all have extensive kids clubs aboard their ships that cater to all ages, from babies to teens. Little kids will adore meet-and-greets with beloved characters onboard Disney cruises, or hanging with Dr. Seuss characters when sailing with Carnival. Older kids will love the rock climbing walls, video game stations, sports courts, go-karts and laser tag on Royal Caribbean and NCL ships.

Best cruise lines for adventure-seekers

Active travelers might prefer expedition-style voyages on smaller ships that include more time for adventurous activities, such as hiking in the Tongass National Forest, wildlife and glacier viewing from Zodiac rafts or kayaks, or even overnight camping. These ships often feature complimentary shore excursions, kayaks and bikes for guest use and onboard scientists and naturalists.

If you've got active teens who have an interest in nature and the environment, an expedition voyage could be exactly what will keep them engaged and off their devices. Just expect the majority of your shipmates to be older adults.

Look to UnCruise Adventures, Alaskan Dream Cruises, Hurtigruten and Lindblad Expeditions for the best adventure cruises.

Related: Pros and cons of small-ship cruising in Alaska

Best for multigenerational groups

Sailing with grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and kids? Try Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and Princess Cruises. These cruise lines, especially on their newer ships, offer something for everyone — as well as a higher caliber of onboard dining than on the cheapest cruises.

Kids can hang out in the youth lounges while parents hit the spa or try a wine-tasting class. Everyone can come back together for dinner and evening entertainment or onboard activities suitable for all ages.

Best for couples and big celebrations

The luxury cruise lines are your best bet if you're a couple and enjoy spacious suites, gourmet food, pampering (many luxe lines hire butlers to cater to every passenger) and the opportunity to meet other like-minded cruisers. The personalized service and all-inclusive nature of luxury voyages might also be attractive to anyone celebrating a milestone, such as an anniversary, big birthday or retirement.

Look at Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Silversea Cruises and Viking.

Things to do in Alaska

Alaska cruises offer a wide range of activities in port, with options for active travelers, wildlife lovers, history buffs and shoppers. Whether you're traveling with young kids or require more sedentary recreation, the Alaska cruise ports won't disappoint.

Related: Best shore excursions on an Alaska cruise

Wildlife tours are available in every port. Hop a bus, kayak, boat or plane to look for bears, eagles, whales, sea otters and other wildlife. Note that moose don't regularly show up in the Inside Passage; you'll need to head farther north to find them.

Book a fishing trip to try your hand at catching salmon or halibut, or go out crab fishing for a glimpse into that type of work.

Active travelers can explore Alaska by sea kayak or canoe, hike on glaciers and through rainforests, zip line, bike, ride an ATV and even snorkel (you'll need a dry suit). You can even opt for a round of golf at the course in Haines.

In Alaska, sightseeing doesn't only take place on the ground. Floatplane and helicopter tours take you around scenic areas like Misty Fjords or land you on a glacier, perhaps for a dog-sledding or hiking adventure on the ice. If you prefer to stay grounded, you can find informative trolley tours of ports like Skagway.

Alaska cruises provide plentiful opportunities to learn about Native Alaskan culture. You can get a taste of the gold rush life by trying your hand at panning for gold, attending a salmon bake or visiting a dog-sled camp. A hike on the Chilkoot Trail or ride on the White Pass Railway lets you follow in the footsteps of the miners who came to seek their fortunes. Cap your day by trying out locally brewed craft beers.

Shopping abounds, and you can buy everything from diamond jewelry to T-shirts and other souvenirs. You'll need to look carefully for Alaskan-owned stores selling local handicrafts, but they're worth seeking out.

Best Alaska cruise ports

The best Alaska cruise ports are also the most crowded because no matter which type of itinerary and cruise line you select, you'll likely visit a mix of the same ports. The immediate port area will be filled with tourist shops and eateries. If you want to see nature at its finest, you must book a tour or venture farther afield.

If you want to see some of Alaska's most rustic and charming villages or stick to wild places, book a voyage with a line like Alaskan Dream Cruises or UnCruise to visit destinations like Baranof Island, Chichagof Island, Petersburg and Wrangell.

Ketchikan is known for three things: Native Alaskan (Tlingit) totem poles, Misty Fjords National Monument and the city's distinction as the Salmon Capital of the World. The town has more standing totem poles than anywhere else in the state; see them at the Saxman Native Village and the Totem Heritage Center. Access the Misty Fjords by kayak, floatplane or scenic cruise. Fishing excursions are plentiful here, too.

Ketchikan is where folks go to see the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, with athletes wielding axes and saws in traditional lumbering activities. It is also the jumping-off point for a Bering Sea crab fishing tour.

Alaska's capital city is interesting because no road leads from here to the rest of the state. It's located at the base of Mount Juneau, and you can only get there via boat or small plane — even residents have to bring their cars to Juneau via ferry. Home to Mendenhall Glacier, this is a popular port for hikes by, kayak tours to and helicopter landings on the glacier.

For a view of the city and cruise port, take a ride in the sky on the Mount Roberts Tramway. Various wildlife-viewing trips (whale, bears and more) and visits to dog-sled camps and salmon bakes leave from Juneau.

If you're interested in Alaska's gold rush history, Skagway — 90 miles northwest of Juneau — is a port you shouldn't miss. In fact, it's the gateway to the Klondike and Dawson mining district in Canada's Yukon territory, where prospectors searched for gold in the late 1890s. The historic district still has a Wild West feel, though that's been a bit commercialized for the modern era. This port can get crowded in summer when several ships can call on the same day.

Skagway is an easy port for independent travelers who want to explore the town or go for a hike on their own. It's most famous as the terminus for the White Pass Railway into the Yukon.

Sitka is as much a working fishing town as it is a tourist destination. Sitka's Russian heritage also sets it apart from other Alaskan ports on your cruise itinerary. See St. Michael's Orthodox Cathedral with its onion dome and the Russian Bishop's House.

Before the Russians came, the Tlingit people settled here. You can learn about their history and culture at the Sitka National Historical Park and Sheldon Jackson Museum of Native Alaskan art. Wildlife enthusiasts might want to visit the Alaska Raptor Center, or go bird- and bear-watching.

The population of Haines remains less than 2,000, according to the United States Census Bureau, and it isn't yet as touristy as some of the other Alaskan ports, such as nearby Skagway. It's known for great fishing (salmon, halibut and trout) and an eagle preserve — because eagles know where the best fish can be found.

Animal lovers and kids tend to enjoy a visit to the Kroschel Center for Orphaned Animals here. For a special tour, go bear-watching at twilight.

Icy Strait Point

Icy Strait Point is notable among Alaska cruise ports because the area and its attractions are all Native Alaskan-owned. Most port and tour staff hail from Hoonah, Alaska's largest Tlingit village. The port is set on Chichagof Island, which is known for its large bear population. Wildlife lovers have plenty of opportunities to search for whales and eagles here; adventure-seekers won't want to miss the ZipRider, with its course of six zip lines.

Scenic cruising

Most Alaska itineraries include some "scenic cruising," where your ship sails past incredible natural sights. You'll rarely leave the ship during these sail-bys (unless you happen to be aboard certain expedition, luxury or small ships that offer the chance to get on board a skiff to get closer ... but, even then, you're still viewing these sites from the water).

Onboard naturalists generally narrate what you're seeing, so head to the observation lounge (or tune to a broadcast on your in-room television) to learn about some of the top sights featured on scenic cruising days.

Top scenic cruising destinations in Alaska include Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve , Hubbard Glacier, Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Dawes Glacier at Endicott Arm and College Fjord.

The best time to book an Alaska cruise is when a cruise line first opens bookings on that sailing, often more than a year in advance. You'll have your pick of itineraries and cabins — balcony cabins are popular in this scenic destination — and often the best fares.

Because Alaska has such a short season with a limited number of ships and is a dream trip for many, cruises are in high demand and people plan early.

If you wait to book, you're not entirely out of luck. Cruise lines often run sales in the fall or in the early months of the year (a period known in the cruise industry as " wave season "). You can take advantage of discounted fares, free upgrades or complimentary add-ons, such as Wi-Fi, gratuities, restaurant meals, beverage packages and tours. Some of the most desirable cabins might be sold out; being flexible about your sail date or itinerary can help.

In general, waiting until the last minute is not the best idea, unless you live in Seattle or Vancouver and don't need to book flights. While some less preferred sail dates or cabin categories might be available a few months out, spurring cruise lines to drop rates, you might have trouble finding affordable airfare and pre- or post-cruise hotel accommodations that do not consume your cruise savings.

What to bring on an Alaska cruise

When it comes to packing for an Alaska cruise, your mantra should always be: dress in layers. On the same day, you might be warm in town but chilly on your tour to a glacier. If you plan on hiking, kayaking or riding on a dog sled, you'll need the appropriate activewear.

Definitely pack for rain; consider skipping the umbrella and instead bringing a wide-brimmed waterproof hat, rain jacket, rain pants and waterproof shoes or boots.

This is also the trip for a camera with good telephoto lenses and binoculars. For more on what to bring on an Alaska cruise, check out our Alaska cruise packing list .

Bottom line

An Alaska cruise is a memorable experience. The beauty of the land and its immense history; the thrill of seeing bears, moose and bald eagles; and the mysteries of the surrounding marine life will astound you. It's a trip worth taking the time to plan and doing right — because who knows if or when you'll make it back to the Last Frontier.

9 great vacations that combine a cruise and a train trip

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Some people can think of nothing better than spending every moment of their vacation time on a cruise. Others dream only of train trips.

There are also people who love both modes of travel so much that they have a tough time deciding which to choose for a getaway.

If you want the best of both worlds — a "train cruise," if you will — we have some good news: You don't have to choose between the two types of trips. You can arrange vacations that combine the best of cruising with the best of train travel.

Most commonly called cruise-and-rail trips, many aren't even official pairings. That is, you'll have to book the cruise portion and the train portion separately, as few companies sell them together as a package. (Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is one line that does. See below for details.)

But don't worry about that too much. You'll be able to find a travel agent to work out the logistics for you.

The more significant issue you'll face is deciding which stunning part of the world with train corridors and cruise ship-plied waters you should focus on for a cruise-and-rail adventure.

We can help. Here are our picks for nine of the most spectacular cruise-and-rail combination trips.

An Alaska cruise with the Rocky Mountaineer

alaska rail and cruise packages

One of the great hubs for Alaska cruises , the port of Vancouver, British Columbia, is also the gateway for one of the most scenic train experiences in North America: a two-day ride through the Canadian Rockies on the Rocky Mountaineer. As a result, travelers can easily combine the two experiences into an extended cruise-rail vacation.

Fans of trains and ships can board the Rocky Mountaineer in Banff or Jasper, Alberta, for a one- or two-day journey through the mountains to the Rocky Mountaineer Train Station in Vancouver, British Columbia. From there, it's just a seven-minute cab ride to the Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal, where vessels operated by Princess Cruises , Holland America Line , Royal Caribbean International and several other lines depart on seven-night trips to Alaska.

Expect to see soaring mountains, forests and wildlife — and learn a little about Gold Rush-era history — during both parts of the trip. The Alaska cruise portion also will include stops in small port towns, such as Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan.

An Alaska cruise with the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway

alaska rail and cruise packages

Are you looking for a shorter train experience to tie into an Alaska cruise? Consider signing up for a daytrip on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway in Skagway as your shore excursion when visiting the small Alaska port town on a cruise.

A ride into the mountains on this narrow-gauge railroad is the "tour that everybody does" when visiting the Gold Rush town turned tourist hub — and for a good reason. It offers an easy way to venture deep into the great Alaskan outdoors.

Personally, I'm a fan of more active excursions in Skagway. But, for someone who isn't going to hike, bike, horseback ride or raft their way through the wilderness around the town (there are tours for all of those things, too), a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Railway is one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the area's classic Alaskan scenery.

From the comfort of a vintage rail car, you'll take in stunning views of mountains, gorges, glacial rivers and waterfalls as you climb nearly 3,000 feet to the summit of White Pass — the headwaters of the mighty Yukon River. Designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, the 20-mile route is a marvel in its own right; it has improbably steep grades at times and segments that pass over soaring wooden trestles and around tight, cliff-hanging curves.

A Mediterranean cruise with the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

alaska rail and cruise packages

You'll want to pack a copy of Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" for this combination trip. It pairs an overnight ride from Paris to Venice on the train that Christie made famous — the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express — with a Mediterranean cruise out of Venice (if you're sailing a small ship cruise line like Windstar , Sea Cloud Cruises or Uniworld). If your cruise is aboard a larger vessel with lines like Seabourn Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Oceania Cruises , you'll likely sail out of other nearby ports, such as Ravenna or Marghera.

Now owned by U.K. luxury hospitality company Belmond, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express features restored art deco carriages. You can view the heart of Europe as the train travels southward from Paris through the Alps to Italy before your cruise. Or, you can save the train portion of your trip for the end of your vacation and ride the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in reverse. You can also extend the trip with an add-on train ride between Paris and London.

From Venice, the cruise portion of the trip can take you to Adriatic ports such as Dubrovnik, Croatia; or it can bring you to the Greek islands or western Italy, France and Spain, depending on which vessel you pick. Several ships sail out of the region around Venice each year.

An Asia cruise with the Eastern & Oriental Express

alaska rail and cruise packages

Like Europe's Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, the Southeast Asia-focused Eastern & Oriental Express is owned by U.K.-based hospitality company Belmond. It will take you on a multi-day rail journey through the region that can be paired with an Asia cruise for an epic cruise-rail adventure.

Routes of the scenic luxury train include a three-night round-trip journey from Singapore. When you return, you can hop on one of several dozen cruise vessels that call the city-state home at various times during the year.

Onboard the Eastern & Oriental Express — which features elegant green and gold carriages — you'll find magnificent interiors adorned with cherry wood paneling, Thai silks and Malaysian embroidery. The train's routes will take you past lush jungles, paddy fields, ancient temples and quaint villages.

Cruise lines departing from Singapore include Celebrity Cruises , Regent Seven Seas and Royal Caribbean. Itineraries often visit coastal destinations in Thailand and Vietnam; some venture farther afield to Indonesia or even as far as Australia.

A Norway cruise with the Bergen Railway

alaska rail and cruise packages

The Bergen Railway, known as the Bergensbanen to the locals, will take you across the mountainous "Roof of Norway" from Oslo to Bergen. From Bergen, you can catch a cruise along the scenic coast with such lines as Hurtigruten or Viking .

Expect stunning mountain scenery on both legs of the trip. The seven-hour railway portion of the adventure taking you across the snowy Hardangervidda mountain plateau. Stretching just more than 300 miles, the Bergen Railway route is the highest in all of Northern Europe and will bring you stunning views of mountains, forests, fjords, waterfalls and rivers. A marvel of engineering, it'll take you through 180 tunnels and make stops at some of the highest train depots in Europe.

From Bergen, cruise vessels can deliver you up the Norwegian coast to fairytale lands like Alesund and the mountainous and glacier-carved Lofoten archipelago.

A Mekong River cruise with Vietnam Reunification Express

alaska rail and cruise packages

Vietnam's North-South Railway Line is often referred to as Vietnam Reunification Express. Built by the French and completed in 1936, the rail system linked Hanoi with Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) until 1954, when the country was divided into north and south. The line was restored in 1975 when Vietnam gained independence, and it's a testament to the country's resilience and unification. Several trains run daily.

The journey from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City can take 32 to 37 hours. Along the way, the train rolls through rice fields, fishing villages, a dense jungle and bustling neighborhoods.

You can book a seat or sleeper, both "soft" or "hard" options. Soft accommodations are more comfortable, thanks to roomy cushioned beds and plush chairs. Hard seats and sleepers are smaller and lack cushions (though sleepers come with pillows and blankets). Passengers can visit the restaurant car or get a snack or freshly prepared meal from one of the food trolleys when it comes around.

A number of lines ply the Mekong, departing from Ho Chi Minh City. Among them are AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Abercrombie & Kent and Scenic. Itineraries might include visits to Phnom Penh's Royal Palace and ancient temples like Angkor Wat and Wat Nokor in Cambodia.

A Caribbean cruise with Amtrak

alaska rail and cruise packages

Beginning in Chicago, Amtrak 's Chicago-to-New Orleans route traverses 900 miles through Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee within roughly 19 hours. In Chicago, stroll along the Riverwalk or through Millennium Park, and visit the Art Institute of Chicago.

The journey ends at the Union Passenger Terminal in New Orleans, just about a 10-minute cab or Uber ride from the Port of New Orleans. Before your cruise, enjoy an overnight stay in the Big Easy with time to explore the National World War II Museum, the French Quarter and Louis Armstrong Park.

Carnival Cruise Lines , Norwegian Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean offer four- to 11-night round-trip sailings to the Caribbean . They might include port calls to the Bahamas, Belize, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Mexico, Aruba and the Dominican Republic.

A luxury Cruise & Rail itinerary with Uniworld

alaska rail and cruise packages

Unlike many lines that offer separate pre- or post-cruise rail tours you can add to your sailing, Uniworld's Cruise & Rail itineraries include them automatically. The upscale line partners with luxury train companies Golden Eagle Luxury Trains and the Maharajas' Express to create a seamless, high-end, river-to-rail travel experience.

With six itineraries to choose from, travelers can opt for 15-, 16- and 19-night trips that visit Venice, Italy; Milan; Istanbul; Nuremberg, Germany; Mumbai; and New Delhi.

For example, the 15-day Grand Alpine & Enchanting Danube itinerary takes travelers down the iconic Danube River on S.S. Maria Theresa. You'll visit Vienna and Budapest before boarding the Golden Eagle Danube Express for a weeklong rail journey with stops in Zurich, Milan and Venice.

Travelers on the 16-day Sacred Ganges & The Maharajas' Express begin their trip with seven nights on board Ganges Voyager II, traveling through the bucolic villages lining India's Ganges River. The rail portion begins in Mumbai and includes stops in Jodhpur, Jaipur and New Delhi.

A train trip on a cruise ship ... sort of

alaska rail and cruise packages

Passengers sailing on Utopia of the Seas can have a unique rail experience and upscale dining at sea. Royal Caribbean's new and final Oasis Class ship will launch in July 2024. At the time of writing, the line has yet to release full details about the new Royal Railway - Utopia Station. However, what we know about this tech-forward, train-inspired restaurant is very exciting.

The "locomotive" will carry guests to "any place and time," thanks to LED screens in the windows and onboard performers sharing the train-inspired storyline. After imbibing pre-dinner drinks on the station platform, passengers will hear a train whistle sound, signaling diners to board. Throughout the immersive experience, passengers enjoy a multicourse dinner.

1. Celebrity Solstice Is Popular with Couples and Families in Alaska

Celebrity Solstice (Photo: Celebrity)

Celebrity Solstice has one of the best interior architecture designs at sea, and passenger flow is excellent. While the ship's passenger-to-space ratio is standard for the industry, the ship never feels crowded. Celebrity is known for its fabulous dining options and bars, but perhaps the unique feature of Celebrity’s Solstice class ships is the Lawn Club.

This full half-acre of real grass on the top deck offers some of the best views onboard in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The space includes a hands-on glass blowing studio, games like bocce and mini-golf, lounge chairs and even rentable Alcoves. Celebrity typically attracts sophisticated young adults and middle-aged couples, though you'll notice more families during the summer sailings in Alaska.

The 4,000-passenger Encore boasts a handful of the features found on its sisters in the Norwegian fleet , including Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Sun , Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Spirit , some of which also rotate through Alaskan itineraries some years. With a variety of dining, entertainment and recreational options, cruisers will never be bored or hungry.

3. Holland America Koningsdam May Be One of the Best Ships for a Quieter Alaska Cruise

Koningsdam (Photo: Holland America)

Koningsdam doesn’t have bumper cars or water parks. This is a ship that prides itself on dining and a relaxed, traditional cruising experience. Service and food quality in the complimentary main dining room are top-notch, but for-fee restaurants like Pinnacle Grill and Tamarind make for splurge-worthy romantic dates.

The ship tends to appeal to a more mature crowd, though you will see more families and multigenerational groups on Alaska cruises. Holland America typically loads Alaska waters with multiple ships. Look for favorites like Westerdam , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Zaandam and Eurodam .

Koningsdam Serves Up a Taste of Alaska, Both On and Off the Ship

Koningsdam homeports in Vancouver, visiting all the most popular Alaska cruise ports like Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Glacier Bay National Park and Tracy Arm Fjord (scenic cruising).

Radiance of the Seas (Photo: Royal Caribbean)

Radiance of the Seas offers Royal Caribbean 's best in a more modest size, without sacrificing the variety of dining venues, great kids' programs and adrenaline-pumping activities the line is known for. The 2,112-passenger ship features the line's much-loved Giovanni's Table and Izumi , a 200-square-foot outdoor movie screen, rock climbing wall and a nursery for babies and toddlers.

Even though the ship does not have the line’s largest suites, it has a good variety, including multi-deck suites. There’s also a suite lounge.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Quantum of the Seas include rides in the North Star gondola that rises out over the water on an extendable arm. For a little less excitement, the best spot to cozy up with a hot toddy is in the adults-only Solarium with some of the best indoor cruise ship views of Alaska.

After dark, dance the night away in the two-story Music Hall -- complete with self-leveling pool tables. Or enjoy a thrilling sports-filled evening in the SeaPlex -- as a participant or spectator -- complete with hotdogs onsite. Take note that Quantum is pretty much the only ship in Alaska where you can have a robot mix you a drink.

6. Luminosa Rounds Out Carnival’s Alaska Fleet with a Slightly Different Spin on Fun

Carnival Luminosa (Photo: Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival Luminosa may not have quite the same attributes as the rest of the Carnival fleet. But its Italian flair coupled with an extensive retrofit to make it feel more at home to Carnival cruisers, makes it a fun fit for Alaska cruises. The ship carries a comfortable 2,260 passengers -- about the same cozy size as Carnival’s other ships cruising Alaskan waters, like Carnival Spirit .

Luminosa homeports in Seattle, operating seven-night round-trip itineraries that include Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Victoria , Tracy Arm (scenic cruising), and Skagway.

Dining highlights on Carnival Luminosa include ample choices for variety, whether you stick with included eateries or add in some extra-fee dining. Reviews say the ship possibly offers the best pizza at sea in Alaska. And Bonsai Sushi Express makes an ideal takeaway option on busy Alaskan port days.

Sleeping on Carnival Luminosa features Carnival’s popular spa suites -- a great choice in Alaska, where soaking away your sore muscles from hiking/kayaking is almost a necessity. There are a handful of aft balconies for bi-directional scenery watching in Alaska. And while Carnival isn’t known for massive suites, Luminosa has a nice selection of mid-sized suites, as well as an exclusive Serenity Retreat with its own pool.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Carnival Luminosa include possibly the only pasta making lessons at sea in Alaska. The main Lido pool has a retractable roof for inclement weather, something only a handful of Carnival ships offer. A Seuss-A-Palooza character parade keeps the littlest cruisers interested. And don’t miss the naturalist talks onboard and even a lumberjack show on the pool deck.

7. Discovery Princess Sets the Bar High Among All the Princess Ships in Alaska

Discovery Princess in Ketchikan, Alaska (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Discovery Princess is the lead ship (and one of the newest) in one of the best cruise line fleets in Alaska. Princess is a tough competitor in the region with multiple ships to choose from, including Grand Princess , Ruby Princess , Sapphire Princess and Royal Princess . Fleetwide staples include lavish adults-only sun decks and Movies Under the Stars (complete with popcorn and cozy fleece blankets).

Expect Homeport Ease, Plenty of Choices and Innovative Pricing on Discovery Princess

Discovery Princess offers round-trip cruises from a homeport in Seattle, with itineraries that include Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Victoria, BC, and Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier (scenic cruising).

Dining on Discovery Princess includes surprises like Alaska seafood bowls served in the World Fresh Marketplace . Don’t miss the Crown Grill during your cruise. It’s one of the best steakhouses at sea.

Princess offers upfront inclusive pricing plans that let you decide how much to include in your cruise fare -- or how much to leave off. Some of the scaled pricing plans include not only drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities, but bonus extras like free room service and casual dining choices that normally have a charge.

Sleeping on Discovery Princess has you mostly choosing from insides, balconies or suites, with only a handful of oceanview staterooms. Most of the prime aft balcony cabins are suites, but in Alaska, these may be worth moving up for -- particularly the Mini-suites. The general advice is to skip the forward-facing balconies. Wind when the ship is underway makes them almost useless.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Discovery Princess are eating -- local cuisine is served onboard daily – and dancing under the midnight sun. Top-deck parties with live music get you in the groove throughout the sailing. Possibly the best onboard activity is Puppies in the Piazza where sled dog puppies come onboard for a day. Hidden gem not to miss: The wake view Pool on deck 15 offers breathtaking views.

Sleeping on Queen Elizabeth means choosing from a cabin category -- each with a set of accompanying perks and exclusive dining privileges. Even the lowest Britannia cabin category has premium touches like a half bottle of Champagne on embarkation, robes and slippers and fresh fruit on request. For a full rear-facing view, expect to book a more expensive choice because aft cabins are all suites.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Queen Elizabeth : Enrichment and Cunard cruises go hand in hand, so expect a deep dive into Alaskan food and culture. Dancing is one of the most popular activities on a Cunard cruise, and entertainment includes jazz and classical concerts. There’s a netted golf area for practicing your swing.

The ship has an “adult” feel, but there are kids’ clubs for various ages featuring Alaska enrichment. The Native Voices program couples video presentations with native guides onboard the ship. Look for an Alaskan-themed buffet in the Lido one evening.

Sleeping on Seven Seas Explorer means choosing a suite is simple because all rooms are suites. Even the smallest suites include butler service and walk-in closets. The ship has twenty adjoining suites for families traveling together. Concierge suites and above have binoculars and cashmere blankets to use during the cruise. All bathrooms have bathtub/shower combos and L'Occitane bath products.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Seven Seas Explorer include lecturers onboard most sailings, as well as an enriching kids' program for ages 5 to 17. Alaskan menu items include halibut and king crab legs. The thermal suite is open to all adult guests. Just picture yourself warming up on a heated lounger.

Viking Alaska Cruises Include Overnights Onboard the Ship in Seward

Viking sailings feature an extended version of Alaska one-way sailings, with more ports visited, more scenic cruising and an overnight in Seward (no matter which direction you cruise) that allows guests to explore Anchorage . Orion homeports in Vancouver and Seward. It visits Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Sitka, Valdez, Icy Strait Point, and the Inside Passage and Yakutat Bay (scenic cruising).

Dining highlights on Viking Orion include Nordic menu options, but don’t miss one of the best Italian restaurants at sea. The Chef’s Table is included in the fare, with international cuisine that rotates every three days. Viking’s buffet restaurant is second to none -- a huge plus in Alaska when long days in port often call for casual dining.

Sleeping on Viking Orion is like no other cruise line. All staterooms on Orion include premium touches like spacious bathrooms with heated floors and automatic lights in closets and near the bathroom door. For the best Alaska views, try for the pair of aft-facing Deluxe Verandah rooms on decks three-five. For easy access to the included thermal suite, aim for a forward stateroom.

Popular things to do in Alaska on Viking Orion include naturalists and expert resident lecturers. Don’t miss the infinity-edge pool and hot tub on the back of the ship. Plus, the covered main pool is perfect for a swim on chilly Alaskan days. At least one excursion is included in every port. You can even pack less for a Viking Orion cruise because there are complimentary laundry facilities on each cabin deck.

With commitment from Royal Caribbean, Alaska Railroad advances $137M plan to revamp Seward dock

The Alaska Railroad is making a new push to replace its aging cruise ship dock in Seward with a larger one that can handle much bigger ships.

The $137 million plan also calls for construction of a 60,000-square-foot terminal that is much larger than the current one, railroad officials said. The effort will require the Legislature to approve the railroad’s plans for issuing bonds. If the funding process is approved, the project should be completed before the 2026 cruise season, railroad officials said.

The plan is backed by an unusual 30-year commitment from Royal Caribbean Group, which will essentially act as an anchor tenant while other cruise lines will also use the dock, the railroad said in a statement this month.

The effort comes as Alaska prepares for another big summer of cruise ships.

A record 1.7 million cruise passengers visited Alaska last year, said Jillian Simpson, president of the Alaska Travel Industry Association.

About 190,000 cruise guests last year used Seward as their port of call, she said. The picturesque town of 3,000 sits at the head of Resurrection Bay.

This summer, the number of cruise passengers coming to Seward is expected to fall, the railroad said. Norwegian Cruise Line is transitioning its ships from Seward to Whittier, where a new cruise port is being completed.

The railroad hopes the new dock will attract more cruise lines to Seward, president Bill O’Leary said in a statement from the railroad. He said maintenance is an increasing challenge for the current dock, which was built in the mid-1960s and is nearing the end of its useful life.

Seward Mayor Sue McClure said many people in town seem to support the railroad’s plans and the idea of more tourism in the future. “I don’t hear a lot of outcry that we’ll be overrun with tourists,” she said in an interview.

Many cruise guests already hop on buses or the train to depart Seward for other destinations in Alaska, she said. But if larger ships and new cruise lines arrive, that would mean additional tourists sticking around Seward to visit attractions like the Alaska SeaLife Center and Kenai Fjords National Park.

That would help many businesses, she said.

Also, the larger terminal will better support community events that take place there in winter, she said. And the city hopes to provide electricity to the ships so they no longer run their engines while waiting in port. That will cut emissions and provide revenue to Seward through the local electric utility, she said.

“I can’t speak for the city council, but I feel this is all so far positive,” she said.

Changes to plans

The plans to replace the dock date back to at least 2019.

The railroad secured legislative bonding authority for $60 million in 2022 in an initial effort to pay for a new dock with minor improvements to the existing terminal, railroad officials said.

Sharply rising inflation and labor shortages led to higher construction costs and made project timelines uncertain, said Meghan Clemens, a spokeswoman for the railroad. That caused the railroad to rethink its plans, she said.

Other important changes also came about.

A new business, The Seward Company, provided an unsolicited proposal to the railroad in the fall, offering to build the project and fund construction, the railroad said. The company presented a new design for the large terminal and a new dock. It also secured the commitment from Royal Caribbean Group for the proposal.

Under the plan, the Alaska Railroad will buy the new dock from The Seward Company once it’s complete, issuing bonds to help pay for it. Also, $30 million from “internal funds generated through port improvement fees assessed to current Seward dock customers,” will help pay for it, the railroad statement said.

The railroad is now seeking an additional $75 million in bonding authority from the Legislature for the project, atop the $60 million in authorization it already holds. The project faces extra costs now compared to two years ago because of higher prices and the additional expense of building a much larger, new terminal, Clemens said.

The debt will be “solely an obligation of the railroad and not that of the state,” the railroad said in its statement. Authorizing legislation in both chambers has moved to the Finance committees after clearing the Transportation committees, Clemens said.

Royal Caribbean Group has committed to providing revenue for 30 years based on passenger fees associated with the equivalent of 140,000 guests a year, said Mickey Richardson, chief executive of Port of Tomorrow, which owns The Seward Company.

Royal Caribbean last year brought about 70,000 guests to Seward.

The increase in guests will happen over time after the new dock is built, Richardson said.

Richardson formerly worked on other cruise dock projects in Alaska for Huna Totem Corp., a Southeast Alaska Native corporation, including the new cruise dock and terminal in Whittier that’s being completed.

“Tourism is a bright spot in the Alaska economy, so it makes sense to add infrastructure for tourism,” Richardson said.

Jason Davis, president of Turnagain Marine, an Anchorage-based firm that will build the Seward dock project, said plans calls for construction of a 750-foot floating dock.

It will be the largest floating dock in the state, he said. The old dock would be demolished late next year, with no disruption to service before the new dock is built, he said.

The dock will be able to support Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, which carry more than 4,000 guests, about double the number of guests many cruise ships bring to Seward.

A floating dock will be safer than a fixed dock for passengers getting on and off ships, Davis said. It will rise and fall in tandem with the ship, eliminating concerns like the need to use steep ramps.

‘The more the merrier’

Preston Carnahan, regional vice president for Royal Caribbean Group, said the 30-year commitment to the cruise port is unprecedented in Alaska.

Royal Caribbean Group “remains strongly committed” to the future of Seward and the state, Carnahan said in the statement from the railroad.

Business owners in Seward said more cruise visitors in the future would be a positive step for the economy, though the level of support for the plans was mixed.

Scott Reierson, who owns Seward Adventure Lodge and a surfing charter business in Seward, said more tourists will generally be good for businesses in town.

But he said there needs to be a responsible plan to ensure Seward receives adequate revenues for the extra strain more visitors will put on city services, such as roads, water and sewer.

“I don’t know if it’s an absolute win-win for the town, but it’s hard to find a win-win in anything,” he said.

Dorothy Urbach, with Urbach’s Clothiers, said the idea of more cruise guests is “wonderful.”

“The more the merrier,” she said.

More summer visitors in Seward can help extend the tourism season, since travelers sometimes decide to return to Seward in winter.

“It means more businesses will be open,” she said of the plan.
