Best Alsace Villages Near Colmar

From Eguisheim to Hunawihr, here are the 5 best Alsace villages near Colmar to visit – and a hotel recommendation for the main ones.

1. Eguisheim

Eguisheim - Alsace, France

Located just out of Colmar, Eguisheim (Haut-Rhin) is a wonder. This Alsace village has a unique layout, where the streets are arranged in concentric circles around the Château Saint-Léon.

Eguisheim is Pope Léon IX’s birthplace. The sculpture of the Pope dominates Place du Château from the top of the beautiful Renaissance fountain.

Wander around the narrow cobbled streets, flanked by the beautiful architecture of half-timbered houses with balconies and windows full of flowers. Don’t miss the central square with its magnificent stone fountain, the Château Saint-Léon , and Saint-Pierre-et-Paul Church with its unique Vierge Ouvrante (14th century). In November and December, the Eguisheim Christmas Market is always one of the most beautiful Christmas Markets to visit in Alsace.

Where to Sleep in Eguisheim

  • Few places in Alsace can beat Hostellerie du Château for its incomparable location (on the main square) and its rooms with a unique charm.
  • Live like a local in Notre Maison à Eguisheim , one of the village’s picturesque houses with a well-equipped kitchen, garden, and room for 6 people.

2. Kaysersberg

Kayserberg -Alsace

Kaysersberg Vignoble (Haut-Rhin) is one of the best towns in Alsace to visit along the Wine Route. Nestled at the entrance of a Vosges Valley, 11 km northwest of Colmar, Kaysersberg is built next to the River Weiss, which flows between the houses.

Kaysersberg means “‘the Emperor’s mountain,”‘ and the ruins of the imperial castle that dominates the city have an incredible charm.

You are going to love Kaysersberg, with its beautiful historic center, its many half-timbered houses from the 15th – 16th centuries, and a unique fortified bridge (1514) built in pink sandstone from the Vosges. Don’t miss the Sainte-Croix Church (12th century) with its magnificent Romanesque portal.

3. Beblenheim

alsace villages tour

Bleblenheim (Haut-Rhin) was the surprise of our last trip to Alsace in October 2020. One of the lesser-known Alsace wine villages on the Wine Route, Bleblenheim stretches out at the foot of the Sonenglanz, the hill producing the famous Grand Cru.

Bleblenheim is as picturesque as the most popular Alsace villages on this list, but it does not see the crowds of Riquewhir or Kaysersberg. Mostly destroyed during WW2, Bleblenheim was totally rebuilt after the war. However, the village still keeps a postcard-picture look and twenty or so houses from the 16th-17th centuries.

Admire the Gothic-style fountain of Saint-Nicolas (16th century) at the entrance of the village. On 14 Rue de Hoegen, the former château works today as a wine cooperative. Then, get lost in its winding streets with its pretty half-timbered houses. The Rue Saint-Martin and Rue Jean Macé are particularly picturesque.

4. Riquewihr

Riquewhihr - Alsace

Nestled in the vineyards, 15 km northwest of Colmar, Riquewihr (Haut-Rhin) is one of the best villages Alsace has to offer and our personal favorite.

Riquewihr has everything to fall in love with it. This fortified Alsace village was built in the 16th century, and it is as if time has slowed down in this town.

Apart from its beautiful half-timbered houses and picturesque alleys, Riquewihr has no less than 40 classified Historical Monuments and three museums. Don’t miss the famous Thieves’ Tower , the former prison of Riquewihr, or the Rue du Général de Gaulle , with its winegrowers’ houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. Then, follow the town’s walls and visit the village’s three defense towers, some of Alsace’s oldest fortifications.

Where to Sleep in Riquewihr

Sleeping in Riquewihr is a good alternative to Colmar. During the day, Riquewihr is packed with day tourists, but at night, there’s a much more local atmosphere than in Colmar.

  • The charming Hotel à l’Oriel is located in the heart of the Old Town, and it offers individually decorated traditional rooms, a good breakfast, and private parking.
  • If you prefer an apartment with a kitchen, the lovely La Maison d’Amélie is central and comfortable, and it always gets the best ratings

5. Hunawihr

alsace villages tour

This lovely Alsace village located out of Riquewihr is one of the most beautiful villages in Alsace to visit, best known for its unique fortified church Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur , built in the 14th century. From the church’s cemetery, there is a wonderful view over the plain of Alsace and the Black Forest.

Explore Hunawihr ‘s cobbled streets, colorful houses, and the beautiful stone fountain (18th century) with two secondary basins.

Hunawihr is one of the stops of the Grands Crus Wine Trail , a lovely 16km-hike that goes through the Alsace vineyards of the communal territories of Riquewihr, Beblenheim, Benwihr, Hunawihr, and Zellenberg. This rural trail (4.5 hours for the full loop) starts out of Riquewihr, and it includes interpretive panels explaining the works in the vineyards and wine production.

Alsace Best Villages Near Sélestat

The city of Séleestat is also a good base to explore some of the most beautiful towns in Alsace. City of Art and History, Sélestat is the third city in Alsace for the wealth of medieval heritage, only behind Strasbourg and Colmar. From Sélestat, you can explore some of the best villages in Alsace and other beautiful places to visit in Alsace , like the Vosgues or the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg.

6. Ribeauvillé

alsace villages tour

With an ideal setting between the Vosges and vineyards, the historic and wine-growing town of Ribeauvillé is a must for the Alsace Wine Route.

When visiting this Alsace village, don’t miss the Grand Rue , with charming half-timbered houses along it, and the Tour des Bouchers (13th-16th centuries). The picturesque Place de la Sinne, with its beautiful stone fountain (1862), is worth a stop too.

Ribeauvillé still keeps part of its medieval fortifications, overlooked by the ruins of the three castles of the Counts of Ribeaupierre. In November and December, the Medieval Christmas Market of Ribeauvillé is a must in the region.

7. Saint-Hippolyte

alsace villages tour

Saint-Hippolyte (Haut-Rhin) will always be remembered for the amazing lunch we had at the local winstub, which belongs to the Hôtel à la Vignette . Indeed, this small village located at the foot of the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg was the perfect lunch stop after the visit to the castle.

Saint-Hippolyte belonged to the Dukes of Lorraine. This enclave in the heart of Alsace was fortified around 1310 with ramparts and ditches reputed impregnable. The Dukes of Lorraine loved the wine from Saint-Hippolyte, and chariots overloaded with liters of wine crossed the Vosges regularly to the Dukes’ Palace in Nancy.

Explore Saint-Hippolyte’s streets, with pretty architecture and flourished balconies, and the walk that follows the ramparts. Don’t miss the beautiful stone fountain located at Place Hotel de Ville (1555).

Alsace Wine Route: 11+ Prettiest Towns & Villages (+Map, Tours & Tips)

Alsace Wine Route ( Route des Vins d’Alsace ) traverses one of the most beautiful regions in France. But with so many towns, villages, and vineyards dotted along the famous 170-km long Alsace wine trail, how do you decide which places are worth your time the most?

In this guide, you can read (and see lots of pictures) about the most beautiful towns and the nicest villages that you really shouldn’t miss on the Alsace Wine Route . We also include our experience-based tips and information on how to visit (by car, by train, or on a tour).

To help you plan your visit, we also created a map indicating all the best towns and villages to see on the Alsace wine route, as well as some of the most scenic stretches of road that we think are worth a detour if you are traveling by car. At the bottom of the article, you can also find some general travel info and useful tips for visiting the Alsace Wine Route.

Good to know: Since there are more charming villages and pretty towns on Alsace Wine Route than anyone could visit in just a few days, in this guide we mainly focus on the places that are worth your time the most if you are visiting the region for the first time.

To help you choose where to go, for each place, we indicate how ‘worthy’ it is and how much time you need. Of course, everything is subjective and is based on our personal opinion, but I hope that it will give you a better idea of what to expect and help you make the most of your time in Alsace.

And since we visited many more villages than made it into this selection, I also share a bit of info on the ones that we found weren’t really worth it if your time is limited. Some of them were mentioned in various guides as well worth a visit, but we found that it wasn’t the case.

TIP: If you are visiting Strasbourg and/or Colmar and have some time to spare, definitely consider a day trip to the nicest villages in Alsace! This tour from Strasbourg brings you to 4 of the most beautiful towns on the Alsace Wine Route. This popular tour from Colmar visits the same towns and includes wine tasting as well.

If you are looking for a more personal experience and want to visit a few of the nicer smaller villages that most tours don’t include, consider this private and customizable day tour from Colmar, and tell the driver exactly which places you want to see.

Alsace bretzel in Kaysersberg

Here are the most beautiful towns and nicest villages to visit on the Alsace Wine Route:

  • How much time do you need: You need at least 3-4 hours to do Colmar justice, but you can easily spend a full day here.
  • Getting there: By car, by train, or with a tour from Strasbourg.

La Petite Venise in Colmar town in Alsace

The biggest city on the Alsace Wine Route, Colmar is also one of the most beautiful Alsatian towns that you really shouldn’t miss when visiting this part of France.

The old town center is so picturesque that you really feel like you stepped into a fairytale. Take your time to explore the cobbled streets and canals lined with colorful half-timbered houses, check out a few souvenir stores, and maybe visit a museum or two. There are also many restaurants where you can try all kinds of regional specialties.

A must-see in Colmar is a canal-side area called La Petite Venise , which can also be admired from a traditional boat ride on La Lauch River. Also, the old Tanners’ District and the picturesque town square Place de l’Ancienne Douane are not to be missed.

TIP: For more information and tips on the main highlights not to miss in Colmar, please see our detailed guide to the city via the link below.

2. Eguisheim

  • HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
  • How much time do you need: 1-3 hours depending on what you plan to do.
  • Getting there: By car, by bus, or by bike from Colmar, or with a tour from either Colmar or Strasbourg.

Eguisheim - one of the most beautiful towns on the wine route in Alsace France

Our personal favorite, Eguisheim is not just one of the most picturesque villages on the Alsace Wine Route but has also been named one of the most beautiful villages in France. If you are looking for a charming Alsatian town that has it all, you really can’t go wrong choosing to come here.

Eguisheim is located just 7 km (4.3 mi) from Colmar but feels a world apart. Surrounded by vineyards and with its unique medieval atmosphere, this charming little town has a totally different feel than all other bigger (and much busier) places nearby. And because it’s so compact, you don’t have to plan much or stress about missing something. Just walk around and enjoy!

On the other hand, if you want to join a bike or a segway tour of the vineyards here, it’s best to do some research and book in advance.

We’ve been to Eguisheim on a quiet winter day and also in the peak summer season and found it just as lovely. One of our best memories here is having lunch at a tiny (and very low-key) local café called Creperie La Galinette and wandering around Rue du Rempart – the most picturesque quaint street that encircles the entire old town.

TIP: For more photos and helpful information for your visit to Eguisheim, please see our detailed guide via the link below.

Wine tip: Grand Cru Eichberg (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, or Pinot Gris).

3. Riquewihr

  • How much time do you need: 1-3 hours.
  • Getting there: By car, by bus from Colmar, or with a tour from either Colmar or Strasbourg.

Colorful houses in Riquewihr old town, Alsace, France

Riquewihr  is located in the heart of the Alsace wine region and the vineyards are just a stone’s throw from the center. If you come here in the summer when the vines are green and lush, be sure to get just a bit outside the village and see the vineyards (of course, be considerate of private property and don’t go walking between the plants).

TIP: There is a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the vineyards and Riquewihr town just nearby. However, it’s located on a hill and would be quite a walk. If you take the little tourist train, it will bring you there (it’s also a nice way to learn a bit more about the town’s history and see a bit of the surroundings).

Also the old town of Riquewihr is so picturesque that it definitely deserves a place among the top 5 of the most beautiful villages of the Alsace wine region!

Just like Eguisheim, it’s a very small town, so you don’t need much time to visit. There are a few tiny museums that you can see in like 5-10 minutes each; for the rest – just walk around the old town, try some wine and local food, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere.

Wine tip: Schoenenbourg Grand Cru (Riesling).

4. Ribeauvillé

Ribeauvillé - one of the best towns to see when dricing the Alsace wine road

Somewhat bigger town, Ribeauvillé is much more charming than it looks at first sight. And it’s a perfect place to visit for tourists because everything is located along one main street, Grand Rue . Just be sure to actually walk the entire length of it – the further west you walk, the nicer it gets.

We drove past this town before and it didn’t look that special, so we visited without big expectations. But Ribeauvillé blew us away and quickly became one of our favorite towns in Alsace. It’s picturesque, colorful, has a really nice local atmosphere, and is also very lively – something that we found many smaller villages lacked. Just like Colmar, this is a place you could visit at any time and any season, and it would be very enjoyable.

TIP: If traveling by car, park near Jardin de Ville (this is also where most buses will stop and where the Tourist Train starts). Then stop at the Tourism Office for a free sightseeing map (they have it in different languages including English). When we visited, you could just pick it up outside, which was handy because we were in Ribeauvillé at lunch and they were closed (you’ll quickly learn that everything except restaurants in this part of France closes between +- 12.30 and 2 pm).

Anyway, this ‘Discovery Tour’ map indicates 24 top sights of Ribeauvillé with a very short description of each landmark. Of course, you can just walk around without any map (as I said, it’s basically just one main street), but we found that looking for all the places and learning some background stories behind them made our visit to Ribeauvillé so much more enjoyable.

If you have more time and comfortable shoes, you could also hike to the three castles overlooking the city center.

Wine tip: Ribeauvillé has 3 Grand Crus: Le Geisberg, Osterberg, and Grand Cru Kirchberg de Ribeauvillé (mainly Riesling, but also other grape varieties).

Ribeauvillé town and castle

5. Kaysersberg

  • How much time do you need: 1.5-3 hours.
  • Getting there: By car, by bus or by bike from Colmar, or with a tour from either Strasbourg or Colmar.

Kaysersberg-Vignoble is one of the nicest towns to visit in Alsace France

Kaysersberg (or Kaysersberg – Vignoble) is another town that is usually included in pretty much any Alsace wine route itinerary or excursion. And rightly so – it’s absolutely worth a visit!

Best known for its Christmas Markets , Kaysersberg is not to be missed if you are visiting Alsace in the winter. But also in summer, the atmosphere in town is great.

Also here, you’ll find plenty of traditional colorful half-timbered houses, but the town has a totally different layout than the others. There’s a small river flowing through the center and that in itself makes it different from all the other towns and villages on the Alsace wine trail.

We also loved that the vineyards here are located just outside the city walls right at the Tourism Office. You exit the gate and wow – you’re in a totally different world. Here, you can take a short walk (+-15-20 minutes) through the vineyards to the 12th-century Château du Schlossberg . You can also reach the castle by stairs in just a few minutes. Either way, it’s well worth it and the views from the top are wonderful. The castle is just a ruin with a tower and it’s free to visit.

TIP: Also here, the Tourism Office has a handy free map indicating all the main sights in Kayserberg, as well as a suggested walking route. We found that it missed one really pretty street next to the river, but for the rest, following this route, you’ll be sure to see the nicest places in town.

Wine tip: Schlossberg Grand Cru from Kientzheim (mostly Riesling).

Old town center of Kaysersberg in Alsace

  • RECOMMENDED.
  • How much time do you need: 1-2 hours.
  • Getting there: By car, by train from Strasbourg or Colmar, or with these tours from Strasbourg .

Obernai Tourist Train at the Town Hall and Beffroi Tower

Obernai is one of the biggest towns in this selection and you’ll find it mentioned on pretty much any guide to the best towns in Alsace. It’s located just half an hour drive from Strasbourg, more on the northern end of the Alsace Wine Route. It’s really nice, but the city center is much bigger here, while there are just a few areas that are really picturesque. So you can’t compare it to Colmar where the entire old town is like a postcard.

One of the main places to see here is the main town square, Place du Marché . Here, you’ll find the most important landmarks and the nicest buildings. Be sure not to miss the renaissance Well With Six Buckets ( Puit aux Six Seaux ) and the fountain with the Sainte-Odile statue. Also in Obernai, you can take a small tourist train that makes a scenic tour and brings you to a nice viewpoint just outside the city center.

You can also take a short walk on the few remaining walls of the Ramparts of Obernai. But one of the best things to do is try some traditional French food – there is a big number of really good restaurants in town. However, keep in mind that if you are coming here for dinner, it’s best to reserve a table in advance . Almost every evening during our stay in July, every restaurant in town was completely booked and didn’t take any walk-ins.

Obernai gives you a good local feel of a simple Alsatian town where locals seem to still outnumber the tourists. If you come here on a market day or when there are any special events or festivities, it can be quite busy, but you also get to experience the genuine local atmosphere.

We were staying in Obernai for a few days on the recent summer visit to Alsace, and it seemed like there was always something going on in town. One evening, there was a traditional folk dancing and food stalls, the next day – an artisan market, and yet another night – a pop/rock concert on the main square…

TIP: Check the official website of the city tourism office to see if there are any events planned, and visit Obernai in the evening, when there’s something going on. I think it will be way more enjoyable than just coming here for sightseeing during the day, in which case, you can see all the musts in less than an hour, maybe stretch it to 2 hours if you also take the tourist train.

Town center of Obernai, Alsace, France

7. Bergheim

  • How much time do you need: 0.5-1 hour.
  • Getting there: By car or with this tour from Strasbourg . In winter, this Christmas Markets tour from Strasbourg also comes here on certain days.

Porte Haute medieval city gate in Bergheim village in Alsace France

Encircled by medieval walls, Bergheim is another really pretty village on the Alsace Wine Route. If you are just passing by, it doesn’t look that special at all and you would never believe that these brown walls are hiding such a charming old town.

Bergheim is rather compact with the nicest buildings concentrated along the two main streets and the main town square. You could enter the old town through the only remaining medieval city gate ( Porte Haute ), walk on Grand Rue to the church, passing the main square and the Town Hall. Then take the parallel street – Rue des Vignerons – back to where you started.

If you have some extra time and it’s open, you could visit a small witches’ museum La Maison des Sorcières . Here, you can learn how the perceived ‘witches’ were treated in the Middle Ages…

There was a local wine festival going on in Bergheim when we visited, and it was so fun to watch locals in such a festive mood. It looked like people from the entire town and surroundings were gathered to see the parade, and the main square was filled with tables and benches ready for the party in the evening.

Anyway, even if you come here on a quiet day and just walk around the main streets for a couple of minutes, we find that Bergheim is well worth a visit and you won’t be disappointed! Because of the location, Bergheim would make a great combination with Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr. But also Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is nearby (the castle is not on the wine trail, but is absolutely worth a small detour too).

Colorful parade of Bergheim wine festival in Alsace France

  • NICE TO SEE.
  • Getting there: By car, by train from Obernai, or with this half-day tour from Strasbourg .

Barr town on Alsace Wine Route in France

Located just 10 minutes drive from Obernai, Barr is mostly famous for its Grand Cru wines of Kirchberg de Barr. We weren’t sure if the town itself was worth visiting, but we made a quick stop here and found that the center was really nice and worth it if you are passing by.

Also here, it’s a place where you won’t see that many tourists, but locals and people who are on a longer vacation in the Alsace wine region. So it’s not really a place where you’d see many souvenir stores or a clear tourist route to tell you where to go. Luckily, the center is also not big, so you don’t need much time here.

Don’t miss the picturesque town square where the Town Hall and the Tourism Office are located. Also the main street – with a very original name Grand Rue (like in pretty much any other village in Alsace) – is nice to see.

We were in Barr in the early afternoon and it seemed that almost everything was closed, apart from a few cafes, restaurants, and wine houses. We just walked around, got some delicious ice cream, and were back in the car less than half an hour later. Still, it was a really nice stop.

Wine tip: Grand Cru of Kirchberg (mostly Gewurztraminer, but also Riesling or Pinot Gris) .

Barr town in Alsace France

9. Turckheim

  • Getting there: By car, by train or this tour from Colmar.

Turckheim - one of the prettiest towns on Alsace wine route in France

Just 15-minutes by train from Colmar, Turckheim is a little town that seems to be entirely overlooked by international tourists. I haven’t seen it mentioned in any guides and most tours don’t come here either, or only pass by without a stop.

Yet, it’s one of the prettiest little towns we visited when driving the Alsace wine route, and I think it’s well worth a short detour. That being said, the old town center is really compact, so a quick visit will be sufficient.

Enter the old town center via the main gate – Porte de France , check out the little square at Fontaine de Turckheim , and walk to the St. Anne Church and the Town Hall. if the church is open, definitely take a look inside. When we visited, the 18th-century organ was playing and it made the visit even more special.

Be sure to also check out the colorful buildings along Grand’rue . If you have more time, you can also visit the local history museum Musée Mémorial des combats de la Poche de Colmar , dedicated to the Colmar Pocket Battle during WWII. Also, check out the other city gates, such as Puerta de Brand on the east side or Porte de Munster on the west side of town.

We were in Turckheim on a Friday, which appears to be the market day, so I guess it was livelier than otherwise, but still – the town center was very quiet and very enjoyable. This is one of those places where you’ll see more locals than tourists, so if you are looking for a more authentic experience away from the most popular touristy towns on the Wine Route, definitely consider a short stop here.

Turckheim old town center - Alsace, France

10. Niedermorschwihr

  • QUICK PHOTO STOP.
  • Getting there: By car. This tour from Colmar also includes a quick stop here .

Best villages on Alsace wine trail - Niedermorschwihr

Just 2 km north of Turckheim, you’ll find a picturesque little village called Niedermorschwihr . It’s just a tiny village located right on the wine trail, but it has several really pretty colorful houses and makes a nice photo stop.

It’s a perfect place to stop for those who are driving the Alsace Wine Route by car and are looking for quaint, charming villages that most tourists never visit.

There is a good pastry shop here that also sells some of the most delicious jams, traditional products, and even a few souvenirs (it’s one of those wonderful one-stop local stores). There is also a nice restaurant in the village and a few wineries.

TIP: We found that the road between Turckheim and Niedermorschwihr is one of the most scenic stretches of the Alsace Wine Route. So even if you don’t have the time to stop at any of these towns, it’s well worth passing by, especially if you are driving in the Colmar area and have a car. Some Alsace villages tours that start in Colmar also pass here.

11. Itterswiller

  • Getting there: By car or by train from Obernai.

Itterswiller village on Alsace wine route

Itterswiller is a tiny but very picturesque village with fantastic panoramic views over the vineyards and the hills of the nearby Vosges mountains. We drove here from Obernai/ Barr and found that the Wine Route in this area is so scenic that it is well worth passing this stretch of the famous Alsatian wine trail for the jaw-dropping scenery.

The wine route includes the main street of Itterswiller, so this is a village where you can just drive by and see it from the car. On the other hand, the half-timbered houses with beautiful flowers are so picturesque that you may want to get out of the car and walk around here for a few minutes.

Itterswiller is also known for its gastronomy and the main road is lined with wine houses and several good restaurants. There are also a couple of very charming hotels here. So if you want to stay right on the wine route and enjoy a cozy atmosphere of a small village while at the same time having some great restaurants and wineries within a few minutes’ walk from the hotel, this could be a nice place to stay for a night or two.

More Towns & Villages to See on Alsace Wine Route

  • IF YOU HAVE A LOT MORE TIME .

If you visit all the places mentioned above and are looking for even more towns to visit when driving the wine route in Alsace, below are some more places that you’ll often see recommended.

Having stopped at each of them, we found that while nice, these are not the places I’d recommend if your time in Alsace is limited. But if you have more time, sure, why not check them out for yourselves…

This is a tiny village surrounded by vineyards and located between Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé. You’ll likely pass nearby, so this could be just a quick photo stop and a small detour. Hunawihr is mostly known for its picturesque fortified church and the scenery around it. With even more time, you can also visit Butterfly Gardens ( Jardins des Papillons ) here.

Kintzheim is mostly known as the gateway to Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg (this castle is a must-see in the area), Château de Kintzheim (castle ruins with birds of prey shows), and La Montagne des Singes (monkey park). Each of these places is more interesting than the town itself, so I’d rather spend the time there.

Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is one of the best places to see near the Alsace wine route

Mittelbergheim

This is a small village that is said to have the best-preserved medieval architecture. Mittelbergheim is also known for Zotzenberg Grand Cru wines. But apart from a couple of wine houses and one rather short main street with a few nice buildings, there’s really not that much to do here for tourists.

Best known for the 9th-century abbey, Andlau didn’t impress us at all. It took us forever to find a parking spot here (everything was full even though there was not a soul in the entire town – go figure), and when we finally got out of the car, it wasn’t really clear what to see here or where to go. We visited the church, took a picture of the bear statue on the main square, walked part of the ‘ramparts walk’ that was indicated on the map as one of the main attractions, and were wondering the whole time whether we missed something (maybe we did…).

If you want to visit a nice abbey, better go to the nearby Sanctuary of Mont Sainte-Odile instead.

In addition to the places mentioned above, there are dozens of other towns and villages on the Alsace wine route. We haven’t been able to visit all of them, so I can’t comment on how picturesque or worthy they are. Sure, you could probably find quite a few other charming places that might be worth a stop…

But if you are visiting Alsace for the first time and want to see the most beautiful towns on the wine trail in just a few days, then just concentrate on the top 5-11 from our list above, and you won’t be disappointed.

Map of the Best Places on the Alsace Wine Route

To help you plan your trip, we created this map indicating all the nicest villages and towns on the wine route in Alsace. In another color, we also indicated the ones that are nice to see, if you have plenty of time.

How to use this map:  Use your computer mouse (or fingers) to zoom in or out. Click on the icons to get more information about each place. Click the arrow on the top left corner for the index. Click the star next to the map’s title to add it to your Google Maps account. To view the saved map on your smartphone or PC, open Google Maps, click the menu and go to ‘Your Places’/’Maps’. If you want to print the map or see it in a bigger window, click on ‘View larger map’ in the top right corner.

Where to Stay for Visiting the Alsace Wine Route

The Alsace Wine Route could be done as a road trip in its entirety. In that case, you may want to stay at different hotels along the way – depending on how many days you have and what you plan to see each day…

On the other hand, the region isn’t that big and you can easily stay at just one place and visit all the other towns/villages from there. In that case, a lot depends on whether you have a car or not.

There are lots of advantages of staying in just one place. For one, you don’t have to pack/unpack each day and are flexible with your plans. This was very helpful when we visited since the Tour de France for women was in the region on the same days as our visit, and many roads were closed in the afternoons. So we adjusted our plans each day in such a way that we avoided any road closures, while still being able to see/do everything we wanted.

Without a car , Colmar is the best place to stay for exploring the most beautiful towns and villages in the region. There are good bus/train connections to some of the main places, and you’ll also find lots of organized tours to the most popular places. Strasbourg can also be a good place to stay if you are just planning a day trip to the wine region.

  • The Colmar Hotel is one of the most popular mid-range options in Colmar.
  • Aparthotel Adagio Access is a well-located mid-budget hotel in Strasbourg.

With a car, and if you want to be right in the middle of the wine region, consider staying in the area around Riquewihr / Ribeauvillé . That way, you can minimize the driving times each day. This area or Kaysersberg would also be a good base for exploring the wine region by bike .

  • Best Western Hotel & SPA Le Schoenenbourg in Riquewihr is one of the best options if you are looking for a nice hotel with a good location, outdoor pool, etc. This was our first choice for the recent summer visit, but it wasn’t available for our travel dates.

Hôtel Les Jardins d'Adalric in Obernai - swiming pool and garden

Our personal experience: We’ve been to Alsace multiple times and usually stayed in the area around Strasbourg. However, on the most recent trip that was focused purely on the wine route, we stayed at this family-run hotel in Obernai.

We chose it for other factors than location (outdoor pool, big family rooms, easy parking, etc.), but we found that the location was also ok for sightseeing anywhere in the region. Most places are within a 20-40 minutes drive, some others almost an hour.

TIP: Using the map below, you can compare hotels and accommodations all over the region. Simply insert your travel dates and group size, then zoom in and out on various villages to see what’s available for your stay.

Practical Info & Tips

Here is some useful info you may want to know when visiting the Alsace Wine Route:

  • Alsace Wine Route extends for about 170 km (105 mi) from Marlenheim to Thann and passes dozens of picturesque towns, charming villages, and a countless number of wine domains and vineyards.
  • The Alsace wine region is perched in between the Vosges mountains on one side and the Rhine River and the Black Forest mountain range on the other side. Protected by the mountains from two sides, Alsace has a perfect climate for wine growing. The area around Colmar is one of the dryest regions in France.
  • You can quickly see Colmar and 1-2 villages OR 4 most popular villages on the Alsace Wine Route in a day, but to really appreciate this region, we recommend at least 2-3 days . If you want to drive the entire route and visit the most beautiful towns and villages, you can easily spend a week in Alsace.
  • The best way to explore the Alsace wine region is by car or motorbike , but you can also cycle , or visit several towns by train and/or bus. If you are short on time, the best way to see the highlights is by joining organized tours from Strasbourg or Colmar . If you have more time, you can also rent a bike to explore the vineyards near some of the most popular villages, but I highly recommend considering an e-bike since many areas are really hilly.
  • The nicest period to visit the Alsatian wine route is in the summer . That’s when the vineyards are nice and green, there are lots of celebrations and festivals all over the region, and the locals are relaxed. It can be interesting to visit during the harvest season as well, but consider that everyone will be working hard and might not always appreciate having tourists around… Alsace towns are also famous for their fairytale-like Christmas markets , so December is also a wonderful time to be here.
  • 7 grape varieties and several Grand Cru wines are produced in the Alsace region. In Alsace, wines get their names from the type of grape (and not from a village or the terroir as in the other regions). There are 6 white wine types here: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, and Muscat d’Alsace, and 1 red – Pinot Noir. My personal favorite is Pinot Gris (pretty much any domain and any wine – I don’t think we ever had a Pinot Gris we didn’t like). We also really enjoyed the Riesling Schoenenbourg Grand Cru from Riqewihr.
  • There’s a lot more to see and do in Alsace than just the Wine Route. Castles, monasteries, nature reserves, theme parks, countless other towns, etc. In this guide, we only focus on the nicest places located directly on the Alsace Wine Route.

The 7 Most Beautiful Villages in Alsace, France to Visit

Most Beautiful Villages in Alsace, France

Considering a trip to the Alsace region? Let my guide to the most beautiful villages in Alsace inspire you to go! I had the chance to spend a full week exploring this region over the Christmas market season and loved it. This part of France is very special, with a distinct culture and the towns are magical.

A unique blend of German and French influence, the Alsace region is one of France’s easternmost areas and is bordered by the Rhin River and Black Forest. Known for its centuries-long feud between French Kings and the Holy Roman Empire, the mix of architectural styles, cuisine, and language can at times leave you guessing where you are. With beautiful vineyards and castles, this place is perfect for people who love history and wine.

Feeling like you’ve stepped right into a storybook, the cobblestone streets and Hansel-and-Gretel style houses are some of the most well-preserved throughout the country — all brightly painted and decorated with flower boxes. Visiting during Christmas is especially wonderful because the buildings are covered top-to-toe in festive decorations. Don’t miss exploring the Strasbourg Christmas markets , which feel fairytale-like throughout December.

Home to some of the most beautiful villages in France, the Alsace is popular for road trips with many following the Wine Route. Honoring centuries-old traditions, winemakers produce fine white wines, some even earning Grand Cru status. Like the origins of the region, the cuisine here is inspired by French and German flavors, with dishes like flammeküche, Baeckeoffe, and Choucroute garnie (the national dish of Alsace).

When we stayed, we decided to rent a car for our time to explore. It made it much more convenient to get around as we could stay for as long as we wanted. Most of the towns are quite small so keep this in mind when you plan out your time. Read on for the must-see Alsace Villages.

Short on Time? Here Are My Top Picks for the Best Alsace Hotels:

  • Hôtel Cour du Corbeau , for the best overall hotel
  • Hotel Les Haras , for the best new hotel
  • Le Moon , for the best modern apartment hotel

Travel Tip: The Alsace region is best explored by car. If you arrive in Strasbourg by train, you can pick up a car at the station. I recommend booking with Discover Cars for the best rates and insurance.

7 Must-See Alsace Villages and Towns Along the Alsace Wine Route

1. eguisheim.

Eguisheim — said to be the inspiration for the town center in Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ — is an idyllic medieval village brimming with old-world charm. The village has a rich history dating back over a thousand years and is renowned for its well-preserved half-timbered houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and circular layout.

The Eguisheim castle and the colorful Saint-Léon-IX chapel are exceptional centerpieces in the village, which is full of geranium-filled balconies and quaint stores selling local produce. Eguisheim is one of the towns along the Alsace Wine Route, with several ways to enjoy the vineyards from cycling wine tours to segway tours.

How Much Time?

You can cover the town in around two hours but could stay longer if you stop in for a meal.

Getting There

The best way from Strasbourg to Eguisheim is by car, the journey is 80km and takes approximately one hour. It’s also 15 minutes by car from nearby Colmar.

Colmar is one of those places where time seems to slow down, and you find yourself lost in the charm of it all. As if plucked from a fairytale, winding cobblestone streets are lined with charming half-timbered houses. Don’t miss wandering through La Petite Venice, the “Little Venice” district, with its canals and postcard-perfect bridges. With plenty of excellent restaurants, don’t miss trying the tarte flambée, a thin, crispy pizza-like creation topped with cream, onions, and bacon.

Colmar’s seasonal decorations are famous, as Christmas ornaments adorn storefronts and homes throughout the town. The Haut-Rhin village is a popular choice for holiday travel thanks to the Colmar Christmas markets where you can sip on mulled wine and pick up some handmade ornaments to take home. With a few museums and flower-lined canals, this is one of the best examples of a quintessential Alsatian village and is one of the most visited in the Alsace.

I’d recommend dedicating at least one day to Colmar, as it’s larger than other Alsace towns. This is especially true if you’re visiting during the Christmas market season.

Take the A35 from Strasbourg to Colmar which takes approximately 50 minutes. Alternatively, you can catch a train from Strasbourg to Colmar which takes 30 minutes.

3. Riquewihr

Arguably the most beautiful of all the Alsatian villages, Riquewihr is worth a visit. Set among the vineyards between the peaks of the Vosges mountains and the Plain of Alsace, the village combines the best of the region’s old-world wines with top-quality architecture. Explore the historical ramparts and some noteworthy historical buildings including the Winemaker’s House from the 16th century and the Thieves’ Tower which was formerly the prison of Riquewihr.

Visitors with an enthusiasm for wine can enjoy a two-hour walk that dives deeper into the heritage of Alsatian wine and the personalities that continue to bring them together from the vineyards surrounding town. The area is mostly known for its white wine varieties, including Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Gewurztraminer.

How Much time?

Riquewihr is a small town and can be seen within one to two hours, though allow more time if you plan to take the vineyard walk.

Riquewihr is 70 km from Strasbourg and takes approximately 50 minutes to reach by car along the A35.

The countryside village of Obernai is one of 100 towns belonging to the Plus Beaux Détours de France , an association of smaller towns with exceptional but relatively undiscovered tourist appeal. At the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile, there’s a tranquility to Obernai that escapes some of the other Alsatian towns in the Bas-Rhin area, making it perfect for those who want to explore the quieter side of the Alsace.

Beyond the market square, the 13th-century belfry, city hall, and Renaissance well with six buckets dating from 1579 are worth stopping by. Just a 15-minute drive away, you can also visit Mont Sainte-Odile, which features Hohenburg Abbey at the summit.

One of the larger towns in Alsace, I’d recommend spending a proper morning there.

25 minutes south of Strasbourg via the A35, Obernai is one of the closest towns to the Capital of Alsace.

5. Kaysersberg

Kaysersberg is a must-visit when exploring the small villages along the Alsace wine route. With roots harking back to the Holy Roman Empire, cobbled streets wind through a delightful mix of half-timbered houses, flower-filled window boxes, and charming town squares. The impressive Kaysersberg Castle overlooks the village, adding a touch of medieval majesty to the scenery.

It’s also the birthplace of philosopher and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Albert Schweitzer, and you can visit the home where he was born, which has now been turned into a museum. Wine lovers can enjoy wine tasting at the local vineyards, which are brilliantly lush throughout the summer ahead of the autumn harvest.

Three to four hours would be ideal.

80 km south of Strasbourg, it takes about one hour to drive to Kaysersberg along the A35 and N83.

6. Ribeauvillé

Halfway between Strasbourg and Mulhouse, Ribeauvillé mixes medieval history with a touch of modernity. The best way to enjoy the town is unhurried, taking your time to stroll through the cobbled streets. In addition to town walls and towers, the remains of the three fortified castles that once stood tall, still dominate the hillsides.

With roots tracing back to the Middle Ages, the vineyards play a pivotal role in Ribeauvillé, allowing numerous winegrowers and the wine cooperative to welcome visitors for cellar tours and tastings. Ribeauvillê is home to notable Grands Cru wines such as Geisberg, Kirchberg de Ribeauvillé, and Osterberg.

Three hours would be comfortable to make the most of Ribeauville.

50 minutes from Strasbourg, Ribeauvillé is easy to reach by car along the A35 and is located between Riquewihr and Bergheim.

7. Bergheim

Among the rolling hills of the Alsace, Bergheim has a brilliant collection of well-preserved medieval architecture. The Old Town is a treasure trove of half-timbered houses, charming squares, and historical landmarks. Medieval gates and towers, such as the Hexenturm (Witch’s Tower), add to the village’s character. Stroll through the streets to admire the well-maintained facades and immerse yourself in the timeless atmosphere.

Like many of the towns in Alsace, the village embraces the Christmas spirit, turning into a winter wonderland with festive fare and decorations adorning the buildings. Elected the favorite village in France in 2022, nature lovers will be pleasantly surprised by the various walking trails through the vineyards, in the forest, or on Grasberg Hill.

Bergheim is fairly small, so two hours should be enough.

Located 60 km from Strasbourg, it takes approximately 45 minutes by car along the A35 to reach Bergheim.

If you’re looking to dive deeper into the Alsace region, here are a few other villages that are worth considering:

Where to Stay in Alsace France

Strasbourg is a great base for visiting the Alsace region, as it’s centrally located and well-connected to various towns and villages in the area. A beautiful medieval city, Strasbourg boasts a rich history and vibrant culture. The historic city center, Grande Île, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and features the stunning Strasbourg Cathedral, medieval architecture, and the picturesque canals of La Petite France.

While some towns are connected by train or bus, the best way to get around is by hiring a car to explore. This will give you the freedom to spend as much time in each destination as you please and means you aren’t restricted by limited timetables.

Travel Tip: If you arrive in Strasbourg by train, you can pick up a car at the station. I recommend booking with Discover Cars for the best rates and insurance.

9 Must-see Alsace Villages and Towns that actually are worth your time

9 Must-see Alsace Villages and Towns that actually are worth your time

You have decided to visit the Alsace region in France, which is an excellent idea. But which Alsace villages and medieval towns in Alsace are actually worth your time? I give you a list of my 9 top-favorite villages in the Alsace and Alsace towns that are worth stopping for.

Did you know the famous Alsace wine route consists of 170 kilometers (105 miles) and 120 towns? One is even cuter than the next. Some are medieval, others are walled. Some can be called cities or tourist traps. So how, on earth, are you going to visit the cutest and most beautiful villages in the Alsace?

I didn’t visit all 120 (in all honesty) but I did visit a lot. Some I drove through or cycled through. For others, I stopped, parked the car, and walked around, or even stayed overnight.

And I came to the conclusion that not all villages are worth the hype. And some definitely are. So here are my personal recommendations to plan your Alsace village tour!

I paid for everything in full myself. I was not paid or sponsored. All my opinions and experiences are my own.

The bigger cities in Alsace, like Colmar, Strasbourg, and Mulhouse can be reached by train. They have international connections with Switzerland and Germany, as well as high-speed trains connecting with Paris and Lyon.

Other towns have train stations, but regional trains are far and few in between. Sometimes, the train station is located over 2 miles from the walled and medieval city center.

If you really wish to explore some of the Alsatian villages, your own transport (by car or bike) is your best option. Most villages have paid or free parking-lost just outside the town’s center.

Sadly, due to their steep hills, cobble-stoned streets, high sidewalks, and obstacles placed everywhere, I found the Alsace villages very mobility unfriendly. If you have trouble walking or need the use of a walker or wheelchair, Alsace is not the place for you. (sorry!)

Size of an Alsace village

Looking at a map, the dots are spaced closely together and you wonder: how can there be so many amazing settlements so close to each other?

Well, the answer is simple: some towns are very tiny! Sometimes the center of town is no more than a street with houses on each side. Other times the village is walled in and the center consists of a few streets.

Regardless of their size, each village consists of at least a few restaurants, winestubes, wine-tasting options, and cute houses.

If you have to park your car outside the city center, it might take a few minutes to walk to town. If you consider visiting a tiny town, it might not be worth your extensive time on the train and walking 20-30 minutes to the town.

In most of these cute villages, walking from one end of town to the other, without stopping for shopping, tasting, or restaurant breaks, might take up anywhere between 10 to 40 minutes.

However, an extensive lunch, getting to and from the train station or parking lot, and shopping, tasting and photography might take considerably longer of course!

Staying overnight at one of the Alsatian villages is always a good idea!

Some of the medieval villages can become quite overcrowded at lunchtime and during peak tourist season. But after dinner, you can have the little village all to yourself! Therefore, it is always a good idea to stay overnight in the town of your choice!

You get to experience the sweet little town all for yourself, interact with locals, do some excellent wine tasting and get value for money on your accommodation.

My 9 favorite Alsace Villages that I recommend

Now, without further ado, I give you my 9 favorite villages in the Alsace because they rank high on accessibility, value for time, and cuteness overload!

1. Colmar, Alsace’s cutest city

Colmar has to be number 1 on the list. It is one of the most colorful cities in France . But technically, not a town or village, but actually one of Alsace’s cities. But it is probably your best base to explore the region and your starting point.

It is easily accessible via train (both internationally and in France) as well as by car.

It has a gazillion hotels, pensions, apartments, and AirBnB options and you only have to throw a pebble and you’ll hit an excellent restaurant, bakery, wine shop, or market.

You can find the cutest houses lining the waterways, old fisherman’s quarter as well as historic buildings and shopping options. You can easily spend a few days in Colmar and get a good taste of the Alsace region.

2. Ribeauvillé, one of the most beautiful villages in Alsace

Ribeauvillé is definitely a village. And one of the most beautiful ones in the Alsace.

It does have a train station but this is located nearly 4,5 km/ 2 miles outside the main historic town.

There are several parking places right on the edge of town and you can follow the main street to the fountain and city gate on the other side.

From there, you can see the silhouette of the 3 castle ruins up on the hill.

I stayed 2 nights at an amazing luxury hotel in Ribeauvillé overlooking the vineyards and had the town to myself in the evenings. Check out Le Clos Saint-Vincent Hotel here.

Louis Sipp is the name in town to go to for wine tasting, and with 3 Michelin recommendations, there is plenty of excellent food to have.

3. Riquewihr, one of the most Instagrammable villages in Alsace

When I visited Riquewihr, I basically did everything wrong.

I visited at the busiest moment of the day when all restaurants and bars were full of lunch guests and some shops closed for lunch.

By the time I was done browsing the town, I was very impressed but also a bit overwhelmed.

Riquewihr is by far one of the most tourist Alsace villages and with good reason.

The village is less stretched out than Ribeauvillé but offers many side streets. The keep at the end is very impressive and they offer many local shops for cheese, delicacy and wine shopping.

There is no option to arrive in Riquewihr by train, so you need your own transport. Parking lots are placed on each end of the town, but depending on the hour of the day, can be full.

For wine tasting, I highly recommend Hugel & Fils (Family Hugel and sons). Their Pinot Blanc tastes especially much to my liking.

Another name in town is Dopff. In town, they have a tasting room, but I went to Dopff au Moulin, just outside of the historic center.

They offer set tasting menus of Grand Crus for a fixed price, which is waived if you buy a bottle. As the tasting is 12€ per person, and one of their finest Riesling Grand Crus costs €11,80 it was an excellent trade.

4. Eguisheim, one of the best villages in Alsace

Eguisheim must be one of my personal favorites. Mainly because I stayed 2 nights in an absolutely breathtaking hotel with an infinity pool overlooking the vineyards and the town. Check out the James Vignobles Hotel here.

But also because Eguisheim is beautiful.

Unlike the other villages, it is not a main road stretching through town.

Eguisheim seems like a small circle with the other streets circling around it towards the center with the church and the stork nests. Eguisheim’s main historic center is also car-free, which is an added bonus.

This does mean you have the park a little further afield, but it is worth it. Sadly, there is no train station in Eguisheim. But it is one of the towns near Colmar, so can be easily visited by bus from Colmar.

They do have a very excellent, locally-owned bike shop that rents bikes and e-bikes. I took full advantage of this and rented a bike for 2 days.

Eguisheim is the perfect base for a few cycling routes .

In the evening, when the day-trippers have vanished, the little town is lovely, quiet, and tranquil. Beyer is a big name in town for wine tasting and most restaurants offer their wines too.

I can highly recommend the small, and Michelin guide recommended Pavillion Gourmand with their excellent food and service.

5. Strasbourg, the biggest of cities in Alsace region

Technically, another city on the list. Strasbourg is not a town or village but by far the biggest city in the region.

But in my opinion, it has to be on the list as it offers great options for international travelers as it has fast train connections and millions of places to stay and eat. And it shows visitors a hint of small village life in the Alsace.

I visited Strasbourg on a day trip by train and had an excellent time.

Strasbourg has a really international vibe as you can learn all about the European parliament.

A must-do in Strasbourg is their boat tour , Batorama, which takes a good 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Stroll through the historic center, catch up on your shopping and admire the picturesque Petite France district with its canals and wood-timbered houses.

I spent the biggest portion of the day enjoying the excellent surprise menu at Utopie. A tiny gourmet restaurant that soon will get their Michelin star (I’m sure of).

Book ahead as they only have a few tables and are nearly always full. A lunch or dinner is a truly tasteful experience at Utopie!

6. Obernai, one of the most surprisingly cute towns in Alsace

Obernai was on the top of my list to visit and therefore, one of the first villages I visited in Alsace. It is located further north along the Alsace wine route, one of the towns near Strasbourg.

The city has its old city walls. I parked at the free parking place near the market. On Saturday mornings they have one of the biggest biological food markets in the region which is worth a visit if you have the chance.

Obernai does have a train station, not far from the old town, so it is only a short walk.

I loved the approach of Obernai, crossing the old moat, through the old city walls, and into the historic center.

Again, it was nearly lunchtime, but I had a blast browsing the cute independently owned shops, houses, and the main square which seemed like an island floating amidst wood-timbered houses and colorful facades.

I didn’t taste any wine in Obernai, but I do recommend Winstub Le Freiberg. Sadly, it is not located on the main square, but this makes it a little hidden gem. The family runs the place and offers excellent food for very reasonable prices.

7. Kaysersberg-Vignoble, one of the villages best for Alsace wines

Or Kaysersberg in short.

The small town is dominated by the silhouette of the Schlossberg Castle and the whole area is surrounded by Grand Cru wine fields.

Whatever wine you taste here, it will be a tad more expensive than elsewhere, but also infinitely better!

I approached Kaysersberg from the vineyards in the east, as I was passing by bike. The village doesn’t have a train station but also offers small parking lots on the edges of town.

The main street in Kaysersberg leads up to the romantic stone bridge with lovely views of those typical Alsatian houses.

Again, the place is very popular with day-trippers, so if you can, arrive at the start or the end of the day. Or stay overnight.

8. Neuf-Brisach, one of the best towns in Alsace to visit

Neuf-Brisach also has a special place on my top favorites list.

It is not because of the typical Alsace village vibe or cute townsmanship.

Neuf-Brisach is absolutely nothing like any of the other towns in Alsace.

It is actually not even on the Alsace wine route.

What it does offer is Unesco World Heritage status . This is Vauban’s (the Sun King’s architect) masterpiece. As the city is laid out in a perfect octagon. You can walk the whole perimeter of the fortifications and the outer moat forms a lush and green park.

Some of the bastion fortifications can be visited.

But the highlight of my visit was the Mausa, a street art museum in one of the underground fortifications.

No internet or an abundance of natural light, but carefully selected street-art artists from all over the world, displaying their best work in the tiniest of villages in France.

The entrance fee of €10 is a bit steep, but the museum is non-funded and the endless halls of vibrant, dark and twisted, and mind-blowing art are worth it.

Take some time to chat with the curator who offers excellent personal stories about the artists and the becoming of the museum and you’ll soon agree with me.

Neuf-Brisach does have a train station, but this is only used for their touristic train journeys (some by steam train!)

Sadly, due to the bad weather and high levels of the river Rhine, my steam train ride and boat cruise didn’t happen, so I don’t have any personal stories to share.

9. Rouffach, one of the least known towns in Alsace

Rouffach was one of those hidden villages that I stumbled upon and was quite taken by. I was riding my bike in the region and wondered why my route made a specific detour to Rouffach.

I imagined it must be worth the time and it was!

The town of Rouffach has a train station, only a mile from the historic town. But the village also offers ample parking options.

The main square is dominated by the giant Notre Dame church but the side streets offer lovely shopping opportunities, and cute houses.

The best views of Rouffach you might find from the prestigious Hotel Chateau d’Isenbourg & Spa . It is set high on a hill, overlooking town. A great place for a drink, lunch or to pamper yourself a bit.

I had lunch at the main town square at the local restaurant A La Grappé, which offers Alsatian cuisine mixed with international flavors. Their set lunch menu had an excellent balance between Alsatian and oriental flavors and the price was excellent.

More Alsace towns that are nice to visit

9 out of 120 Alsatian villages is really not that much. But I imagine you don’t have a month to visit.

And you’re interested in the highlights and the best villages in Alsace on offer. I also don’t want to overwhelm you with a massive list of must-visit villages.

But, if you’re insatiable.

Or have more time.

Or have visited before, or suffer from massive FOMO, then I can offer you some more villages that really looked lovely and could be nice to stop at.

So here are a few other villages I’ve enjoyed:

I passed Bergheim a couple of times on my way on the Alsace wine route.

What stood out more than other villages were its pastel-colored timbered houses. No bright yellow or orange here, but soft pastel hues like pastel green and pink. Together with the ever-present baskets of flowing flowers, it paints a very pretty picture.

Kintzheim, an excellent base for some of the best places to visit in Alsace

I also passed Kintzheim a few times, because the village lies at the base of some of the region’s major attractions.

Of course, you have the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle , which is a must-see if you love castles. And views. And history.

Tucked away in the woods above Kintzheim, you’ll also find the Birds of Prey show at Kintzheim Castle and the Monkey Mountain. These top attractions make Kintzheim an excellent base to stay at.

Barr, one of the beautiful villages near Strasbourg

A tiny village, not far from Obernai and closer to Strasbourg than Colmar, Barr is easily overlooked.

I passed through it by car, which immediately marked the downside of the town. It doesn’t have a car-free historic center.

The narrow streets are lined on both sides by tall, wood-timbered historic houses. Offering overall great impressions of the town, but not a must-have photo opportunity.

But do stop at one of the many ice cream shops or wine bars. Away from the massive crowds, you can enjoy yourself in peace.

Kientzheim was a surprise I stumbled on while I was cycling around.

As soon as I passed the city gates, the quiet peaceful medieval vibe hit me.

I mainly stopped for the winery of Blanck & Fills (either André or Paul- same family but different wines), which was an excellent choice. But once I proceeded towards much more famous Kaysersberg, I was drawn in by the lovely main square which makes for an excellent quiet lunch stop.

Should Hunawihr be on the list?

I often see Hunawihr mentioned on the lists of most beautiful Alsace villages too.

But I don’t agree.

Or I’ve missed a major cute view.

I’ve visited the sleepy town of Hunawihr and didn’t find any nice views besides the main fountain and lovely hotel/restaurant.

The best view that could be worth your time is when you climb up to the church and cemetery.

Here you can see the vineyards, the different villages of Ribeauville and Riquewihr on the other side, and the gorgeous castle ruins in the distance.

Nearby NaturOparc was a nice visit and also Domaine Schwach offers great wine tastings. I guess the best view of Hunawihr is when you drive on the main road from Ribeauville to Riquewihr and you see the small town with the church tower sticking out from the vineyards.

In all honesty, I must admit that, sadly, I didn’t make it to Munster myself.

I wanted to, but my lack of energy and oversaturation of Alsace villages got in the way.

Munster is the base of the famous Munster cheese. The village itself offers a million excellent restaurants and you can visit local farms in the Munster valley to get your cheese at the source.

I guess I have an excellent excuse to go back one day!

What about Mulhouse?

Mulhouse is the 2nd largest city in Alsace and I visited it on my last day in Alsace.

Technically, again not a village, but I did want to visit.

I timed my visit to the biggest market in Europe and tried to catch some street art. But Mulhouse is quite different from the other places I’ve visited in Alsace.

Its industrial past plays a large part in this.

In Mulhouse, you’ll not find those cute wood-timbered houses that are ever-present in the rest of Alsace. I find Mulhouse a bit like any other bigger town/small city in the region.

It does have its quirks and fun elements that make it worth your time, but if you’re looking for stereotypical Alsace villages, then I’d steer away from Mulhouse.

Villages still on my list to visit in Alsace

Because I can’t visit them all, but I’ve read great things about these villages.

For a new visit, I’ll be sure to include them.

  • Wissembourg. Located all the way in the north of Alsace, this village is actually recently named as ‘le plus beau village de france’ or one of the most beautiful villages in France.
  • Rosheim, north of Obernai
  • Dambach-La-Ville centrally located
  • Guebwiller, more to the south of the wine route in Alsace

How to best enjoy the towns in Alsace

Wow, you’re still here.

I guess I could go on and on and keep mentioning all 200 tiny hamlets and towns in Alsace, but we have to stop.

I hope you get a good idea of the villages that are worth your time and worth stopping for. Others you can drive or cycle through.

I hope you’ll have an excellent time in Alsace, especially with my tips and recommendations as they are based on my personal experiences.

Whatever you do, time your visit early morning or late afternoon. Or better yet, stay overnight to experience the towns at dinner time and without the main crowds (parking is usually free after 7 pm!)

Take a glass of wine, have lunch at a local place and enjoy the views of these lovely Alsace villages.

Which of these villages will you put on your must-visit list? Which town appeals the most to you?

Let me know in the comment sections below, I’d love to hear from you.

Quick Background on the Alsace Wine Region

Understanding the Alsace wine region is key to appreciating its wines. Located near the German border, the region’s complex history, as a part of France and, at times, Germany, has shaped its unique identity. This is reflected in its architecture, local cuisine, and winemaking techniques. The Alsace AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) signifies the high-quality standards of wines produced here. Alsace’s family vineyards and larger estates alike contribute to a rich mosaic of wine styles, from dry Rieslings to sweet late harvest wines. The half-timbered buildings, narrow streets, and medieval towns like Strasbourg and Colmar speak volumes about this past, offering a glimpse into a rich culture that complements the wine tasting experience.

Charming Villages & Towns to Visit in Alsace

Alsace is dotted with cities and towns each showcasing their own unique charm and offering convenient access to the region’s renowned wine tasting experiences.

Houses and canals and wine bars in Strasbourg, France

The capital of Alsace, Strasbourg is a vibrant city that masterfully blends modernity with historical heritage. Known for its stunning Gothic cathedral and the beautiful “La Petite France” district, the city’s architectural splendor is a sight to behold. Strasbourg is more than just a visual treat; it’s a hub for Alsatian wine culture, with numerous wine bars and shops offering selections from local vineyards. The city’s proximity to the northern part of the Alsace wine route makes it an ideal starting point for your wine tourism adventure.

Typical houses in Colmar, France, near Alsace, called "Petite Venice."

Often referred to as the wine capital of Alsace, Colmar is a key stop on the Alsace wine route. This town is renowned for its well-preserved old town, canals, and colorful buildings, which create a backdrop akin to a storybook setting. Colmar is surrounded by vineyards and is famous for its wine shops and tasting rooms where you can sample local wines and get a sense for the grape varieties and wine styles produced nearby. The town is also home to the Unterlinden Museum, showcasing local art and history.

Riquewihr village in Alsace wine region

Renowned for its historical architecture and for being one of the most beautiful villages in France, Riquewihr is a step back in time. The town is surrounded by hillsides covered in vines, making it an excellent spot for those looking to combine historical exploration with wine tasting. The local wineries here are known for their Rieslings and other varietal wines.

Its location makes it a great base for exploring both the wine route and the natural beauty of the Vosges.

Hunawihr is a lesser-known gem in Alsace and a haven of tranquility and tradition. It’s characterized by its fortified church, which stands as a sentinel over rows of vines. Wine enthusiasts will appreciate the local wineries that produce exquisite wines, reflecting the terroir’s unique characteristics. Circled by vineyards, Eguisheim is a circular village that radiates charm from its core. Recognized for its floral displays and timber-framed houses, the town’s layout is a marvel of medieval urban planning. Eguisheim is deeply rooted in wine history, believed to be the birthplace of the Alsace wine industry. The town’s streets are lined with vintners and tasting rooms. Eguisheim’s vibrant energy and historical significance have earned it the title of one of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France,” making it a must-visit for those exploring Alsace.

Aerial view of Kaysersberg

Kaysersberg , with its robust historical architecture and lively cultural scene, also stands out as a key destination. The charm of this village is accentuated by its imperial castle ruins that offer panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards. The town is known for its Christmas market and as a producer of some of Alsace’s most robust wines. Travel Logistics & Planning Your Trip to and Around the Alsace Wine Region

When planning your journey to Alsace, the region’s accessibility via various airports and cities is a key consideration. Strasbourg Airport (SXB) is the most convenient gateway, located just 10 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg’s city center. This airport serves a range of domestic and European flights, making it a prime choice for travelers aiming to explore Alsace’s wine region.

For a broader selection of flights, including transcontinental routes, the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg , about 120 kilometers from Strasbourg, is an excellent option. This unique airport, operated jointly by France and Switzerland, offers extensive connectivity. Additionally, the Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) in Germany , approximately 60 kilometers from Strasbourg, presents a viable alternative for Winetravelers, particularly those arriving from European destinations. Check current flight deals into any of these airports and book your flight with Skyscanner to ensure you’re getting the best price for your travel dates.

Once in Alsace, there are several options available to explore its charming villages and lush vineyards. Renting a car provides the utmost flexibility, allowing travelers to meander through the scenic routes at their own pace and schedule. Major car rental companies are conveniently located at the airports and major train stations, offering a range of vehicles to suit different preferences.

For those preferring public transport, the region is well-connected by an efficient network of trains and buses. The French national railway company, SNCF, operates train services connecting major towns and cities in Alsace. The local TER (Transport Express Régional) trains are a reliable and scenic way to travel between smaller towns and villages. Buses complement the train network, with services like Lignes Interurbaines d’Alsace (LIA) connecting more remote areas. These buses are a budget-friendly option and offer a unique way to experience the local landscape and culture, but are a little more restrictive compared to renting a car.

When to Visit Alsace

Beyond transportation, there are other practical aspects to consider for a trip to Alsace. The region has a temperate climate, with the best time to visit being from May to October , when the weather is most favorable for vineyard tours and outdoor activities.
