Autzen Stadium Information

Located in the northwest of the U.S., in Eugene, Oregon is an outdoor football stadium named Autzen Stadium. To be more precise, it is located north of the University of Oregon campus and acts as the home field of the Oregon Ducks of the Pac-12 Conference. The arena was opened in 1967 and has undergone several expansions since its opening. The official capacity is currently at 54,000. However, attendance at the stadium regularly exceeds 54,000 attendees.

Prior to 1967, the Ducks only played three home games per year on campus in most years; with the exception of the Civil War game. The annual rivalry game with Oregon State, games that were likely to draw big crowds were played 110 miles north in Portland at the larger Multnomah Stadium rather than the Ducks’ Hayward Field. However, the Ducks became so popular that attendance outgrew the campus facility and they received popular support to play the entire home schedule in Eugene, Oregon. Thus, athletic director, Leo Harris, led a campaign to build a new stadium on 90 acres (0.36 km 2 ) that the school had acquired for the purpose in the 1950s on his recommendation.

The stadium was built within an artificial landfill (over the refuse) to eliminate the need for multilevel ramps. As a result, construction took just nine months to complete and the cost was approximately $2.3 million. Out of the total cost, $250,000 was contributed by the Autzen Foundation, headed by Thomas E. Autzen, son of Portland lumberman and philanthropist Thomas J. Autzen (1888–1958), for whom the stadium was named after. Ironically, the elder Autzen was an alumnus of archrival Oregon State University. The foundation’s donation was linked to his son, a University of Oregon alumnus from the class of 1943.

On September 23, 1967, Oregon hosted Colorado in Autzen Stadium’s inaugural game, a 17–13 loss before a crowd of 27,500. Four weeks later on October 21, 16,000 attendees saw Oregon’s first win in the new facility; the 31–6 victory over Idaho was the only home win of the season.

In 1982, a $650,000 meeting room complex named the Donald Barker Stadium Club was opened on the east rim above the end zone. This complex gave the stadium its first meeting facilities and was dedicated at the home opener in September.

A proposal to enclose the stadium within a dome was given serious consideration in 1985. New tax laws on contributions changed the feasibility causing the overall project to scale back. Later on, in 1988, a $2.3 million renovation built a new press box on the south side of the stadium and converted the original north side press box to luxury suites.

In 1995, the field was named Rich Brooks Field in honor of the Ducks’ coach from 1977 to 1994. Coach Brooks led Oregon to its first outright Pac-10 championship and its first Rose Bowl appearance in 37 years. All of these were achieved in his last season. After the 1994 season, Coach Brooks left Oregon to become head coach of the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League.

In 2002, a $90 million facelift and expansion was done. It added seating and luxury boxes to the south sideline, bringing the stadium seating capacity up to its current level. Five years later, the large yellow “O” was added onto the south end of the stadium exterior when ESPN’s College GameDay crew was on location. That season, “GameDay” originated two of its Saturday shows from Eugene.

In 2008, a new, 33-by-85-foot (10 by 26 m) high-definition LED scoreboard and replay screen, known as DuckVision or “Duckvision 2.0”, was installed. It is currently the 39th largest video screen in the NCAA. Two years later, the field was replaced with new FieldTurf that featured the new Pac-12 logo. The installation was made even before the logo was officially revealed to the public. During the process, the crown was also removed to make the field flat and new paneling was added to the walls surrounding the field.

In 2014, the east end-zone scoreboard was updated to include a digital screen. The addition also included 150 flat screen monitors throughout the concessions areas, additional culinary options in the form of food trucks on the north side of the stadium, increased cell phone repeaters, and an upgrade to the sound system. Additionally, the sideline wall graphics were updated from the new panels installed in the 2010 season.

Autzen Stadium was built at a cost of $2.5 million, of which close to $1 million was raised from 1,000 stadium sponsors who contributed $1,000 each for a 25-year option on two seats in prime location protected from the elements by a cantilever roof.

Autzen Stadium, which replaced historic Hayward Field as the home of Oregon football, is named for the late Thomas J. Autzen, a Portland lumberman, sportsman and philanthropist. He was the founder of the Autzen foundation, which gave the university $250,000 to help finance the project.

In 1969 its first artificial turf was installed, followed by the sand-filled OmniTurf in 1976. The Donald R. Barker Stadium Club, used for meetings and pre- and postgame functions and banquets, was added to the east end zone in 1982.

Improvements completed in 1989 included a three-story building on the north side of the stadium housing 381 seats and twelve private boxes on the second and third levels with concessions and restrooms located on the first level. A new press box facility was added on the south side of the stadium, also in 1989. The Leonard J. Casanova Athletic Center was added west of the stadium in 1991 and the Ed Moshofsky Sports Center on the southwest in 1999.

Following Oregon’s first-ever outright Pacific-10 Conference championship and his departure to the NFL after 18 seasons as the Ducks’ all-time winningest head coach, the athletic department named the playing surface of Autzen Stadium after Rich Brooks.

Autzen Stadium just underwent it's largest renovation ever. The three-phase expansion added approximately 12,000 seats, bringing the gameday capacity to nearly 54,000. The $89.7 million project also added 32 new skyboxes, a three-story luxury suite, and improved concession stands. The site master plan addressed the needs for improved circulation, parking, transit capacity, accessibility, and pre-game activity amenities (including new restroom facilities).

The U of O was the first PAC12 school to have an indoor practice facility. The 405 by 220 foot clear span main structure will be used for football practice and by the women’s soccer and softball teams, golf, track and field and other student athletic programs. Located adjacent to Autzen Stadium and Casanova Center, the Moshofsky Center includes a new Duck Shop, training room and classrooms, equipment storage space, and concession facilities for game day events. The building features a clear inside height of 70 feet, a synthetic turf field zone, and a 4 lane running track. Retractable nets separate the building into protected areas. Observation platforms provide elevated stations for taping practice sessions. A new outdoor practice field includes a competition soccer field and two football fields. A high-tech all weather turf system was designed for year round use. A new pedestrian plaza joins the buildings on the site and provides additional game day venues for a variety of activities and special functions.

Ed Moshofsky Sports Center, named in honor of the former University of Oregon football letterman (1940-42) and long-time university supporter, was dedicated in August 1998 as the first indoor practice and training facility in the Pacific-10 Conference. Located south of the Casanova Athletic Center, the Moshofsky Center accommodates the majority of the University’s intercollegiate athletic programs. The $14.6 million facility not only includes an enclosed full-length artficial surface football field and 120-meter four-lane synthetic surface running track, but also an automated system in place to lower a batting cage for use by the softball team, as well as protective netting that transforms the facility for use by the men’s and women’s golf teams. A combination of indirect lighting and two parallel skylight panels contribute to an energy efficient system which allows the flexibility to alter lighting conditions. Platforms on the east and west ends of the structure, as well as a catwalk along ideal locations to set up film and video accessories to evaluate workouts and training sessions. Also incorporated is the surrounding Wildish Plaza, which encircles the north and west boundaries of the building, the Duck Shop retail souvenir outlet, and the eternal flame on the northwest corner of the Wildish Plaza.

Stadium Spotlight: What makes Oregon's Autzen Stadium so loud?

  • Author: Tim Newcomb

Think of a potato chip. Not so much a ridged Ruffles or a crushed-up Lay’s, but more a Pringle. That shape -- the curvature of the chip -- matches Oregon ’s Autzen Stadium. The Eugene, Ore., venue has that same potato chip shape for the seating bowl, with sidelines sweeping taller than the low-strung end zones.

Opened in 1967, Autzen’s frugality of design -- the entire structure was originally built for $2.5 million -- has led to its character, even during a renovation in 2002 that boosted capacity by 12,000 to 54,000 seats. Standing-room-only tickets bump actual game-day capacity to roughly 59,000.

While countless stadiums make claims to the crown of loudest in college football, Autzen routinely ranks atop the list. You can call it frugality of design, which wasted little space and pushed fans close to the field, but Christopher Mitchell of AECOM, one of the architects on the Autzen remodel, tells SI.com the simplicity of the potato chip-style bowl really lends to a roaring ambiance.

“It is like a double-sided amphitheater,” he says. “All the energy is concentrated.”

Behind stable of talented tailbacks, Oregon's offense more than Mariota

With just one deck that flows freely, the seats and noise created from the wild Ducks fans doesn’t get broken up by structure and rings of glassed-in luxury seating. Add in a suite building on the north side with a flat, solid surface and a roof on the south side both bouncing sound back toward the field, and “all those things help concentrate sound back in toward the bowl,” Mitchell says.

During original construction, Oregon took unused space north of the Willamette River connected to campus by a footbridge and, as Mitchell describes it, scraped up the earth around it to pour concrete on, forming the backbone of the seating bowl. With the 90-acre site full of bedrock, the locally sourced infill builds up around Autzen, encasing the state’s largest sports venue in earth and sinking the field, which also adds a noise-retaining benefit.

“What we liked was the purity of the form of the bowl,” Mitchell says. “It is quite striking and beautiful.”

STAFF: Week 2 picks: Who'll win Oregon-Michigan St., Stanford-USC, more?

The 2002 expansion forced designers to slice off the south side of the seating bowl and rebuild it with the same geometry as the original, simply making it taller in the process of adding 12,000 seats and 32 high-rising luxury suites. On the backside, they reworked the land to carve out a new concourse to tie into the rest of the stadium, adding in new concessions and amenities.

“The geometry is still very similar,” Mitchell says. “It is a little lopsided, but all the lines kind of flow.” Even with the remodel, the outline of Autzen mimics the shape of Oregon’s “O” logo, designed by Nike to resemble Autzen on the outside and Hayward Field, Oregon’s legendary track venue, on the inside of the O.

The original 1967 aesthetic featured a glulam wood roof covering about 2,400 of the 42,000 seats. The redesign embraced the original roof overhang, making it larger and recycling the original pieces in a new Autzen Stadium entryway design. The potato-chip shape remained, and with it, the signature boom of the Autzen crowd.

Endzone seating at Autzen typically comes with a lower price tag than the rest of the stadium. While the lowest rows in these sections are incredibly close to the field, you'll find a better experience about 30 rows up. There you'll be close to the main walkway and will have an elevated view that makes it easier to see the other end of the field. The main videoboard is located above the west stands, so fans should choose seats in Sections 19-23 to avoid having to turn around to see replays.

Garth Brooks performs “Rodeo” for a record crowd at Autzen Stadium in Eugene Saturday night. [Chris Pietsch/ The Register Guard]

Opening up the show was Brooke Eden a Nashville based artist and BMI songwriter. Making a name for herself with her self-released single “American Dreamin,” and EP Welcome to the Weekend , the crowd was very impressed with her ability to capture an audience of 60,000+. With her songs including “Act Like You Don’t,” “Honey,” and “Honky Tonks In Heaven,” Eden gained many more fans last Friday night.

This tour was epic before the show even started, the 360-degree stage commanded such a presence among the large stadium. Autzen is known for loud crowds during football games and Brooks was up for the challenge. Dressed in his signature Wranglers, a red shirt and of course a cowboy hat, the highest selling solo artist of all time started the party with “All Day Long”. Instantly he felt the energy from the crowd so he paused and said “I see why everybody calls this the loudest place on Earth! If you are going to raise hell, you picked the right guy on the right night tonight!”

You hear that Brooks is famous for his live show and you can tell after just a few songs why he has been named Entertainer of the Year. Throughout roughly two and a half hours of hits –“Rodeo,” “Friends in Low Places,” and “Thunder Rolls” were in the set list among new songs. Brooks also included a few covers as well, starting with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Fishin’ in the Dark.” What fans may not know is that two of his popular hits are two songs he turned into songs of his own, the Oak Ridge Boys’ “Callin’ Baton Rouge” and Billy Joel’s “Shameless” which both came later in the set.

He paused many times throughout the concert to take in the awe of the crowd but possibly the most emotional for Brooks was after “The River.” When the crowd takes over songs like “The River” and “Unanswered Prayers” it is one of the coolest feelings in the world to stand amongst so many singing along. To be in sync with that many people, singing the songs you grew up on, back to the artist themselves, there is nothing like it. You can tell by the emotion in Brooks’ eyes that these are the moments he dreamed of when he first got to Music Row.

Garth Brooks Eugene

While moments like the one above made the whole world stop for a second, Brooks still ran across the stage throughout the duration of his set, giving fans throughout the stadium plenty of opportunities to see him. You could tell that he was just as excited to be there as the fans were. Throughout the evening he told the crowd how great of an audience they were and how excited he was to be there with them for a night of music. Inviting the Oregon Ducks Cheer team and the Duck mascot himself on stage during “Friends in Low Places” was one of the highlights of the night. Brooks also brought a choir with him that filled the stadium stairs during “We Shall Be Free” wearing beautiful colorful robes.

20 years later and Garth Brooks is still selling out 50,000+ shows all across the country. With his unbelievable energy and charismatic personality, he shows no signs of slowing down. Continuing to announce dates throughout the next three years, as well as new music, there are plenty of opportunities to catch the man in action.

  • Purpose: Athletic Department Adminstrative Office Building
  • Opened: September 27, 1991
  • Named in Honor of: Len Casanova

Trivia: The Casanova Center houses the Athletic Department's state-of-the-art Medical Treatment Center and the future Marcus Mariota Sports Performance Complex .

Named after Oregon's longtime football coach and athletic director, the Casanova Center provides the football program with its largest improvement prior to the completion of the Moshofsky Sports Center.

Oregon also has improved its entire general operations with the housing of its entire staff on the second level of the facility since its opening during the summer of 1991.

Serving as the cornerstone of the 102,000 square foot facility is the expanded locker room for football and weight room accomodations for all sports. The cost of the two-story structure, which was formally dedicated on Sept. 27, 1991, exceeded $12 million and the entire Autzen improvement project hit nearly $18 million at its conclusion.

The completed locker room is almost four times the size of the previous facility. The project's lower level also includes a modern medical treatment area, practice accomodations for wrestling and equipment facilities for football and wrestling.

The capacity of Autzen Stadium was increased to 41,698 with the construction of sky boxes and the master skysuite atop the north rim of Autzen Stadium and was a part of the beginning of the Autzen improvements. The three-tiered building was accompanied by a new press box constructed under the roof on the south side of the facility.

Ten corporate boxes, seating as many as 21 persons each, are leased for $30,000 per year for three years, plus a two-year option. Individual seating in the 350-seat master skysuite is available at $1,250 each.
