Washington, D.C. Is America's Next Great Bakery Town

Plan a pastry crawl that includes guava and cheese babka, ube brioche rolls, and flaky pakhlava.

Has there ever been a year when baking—and eating baked goods—made more sense?

While many of us were homebound and anxious, we whipped up breads, babkas, and cookies. We scoured online grocers for flour, cleared supermarket shelves of yeast , and nurtured sourdough starters like they were our own children.

But there's never been a better time to buy baked goods, either. One place, in particular, really took it to the next level: Washington, D.C. Not only was the city the birthplace of Bakers Against Racism —the worldwide bake sale that raises money for organizations that support Black Lives Matter—it's also been home to a boom in bakeries this year, both from homegrown shops and well-known transplants.

Why the sudden flourish of flour? The timing certainly makes sense, as the news has felt relentlessly bad and we've grasped for comfort in the form of warm banana bread. But according to Paola Velez, pastry chef of La Bodega and Compass Rose , baked goods offer more than just comfort.

"People feel connected—they find a connection with what we do," she says. "It's a lot more than just a bakery for them. This is a taste of home when they can't actually travel."

Whether it's a yearning for home or for a carb-filled balm, read on for some of the brightest new bakery additions to the capital city.

Pastry chef Paola Velez started the year at Kith + Kin, making her signature plantain sticky buns and thick chocolate chip cookies . When the pandemic prompted a shutdown and the staff was furloughed, she started a new gig, but not before founding Bakers Against Racism with Willa Pelini and Rob Rubba, which has so far raised over $2 million for social justice causes. Now, Velez is at the helm of La Bodega, a bakery inside Rose Previte's Compass Rose. She draws from her background and childhood growing up in the Dominican Republic and New York City, making a new breed of baked goods she calls New Americana.

"It's the American story retold by first-generation and second-generation Americans," she says. "We're finding a place where all of this makes sense." That place has babka—a nod to Velez's Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx, but it's made with guava and cheese or dulce de leche. There are also rum cakes, ube donuts, and egg tarts.

Beverage director Jess Weinstein is making cocktails that complement Velez's baked goods and tell her own story. "Those stories melt together because that is what America is," says Velez.

The city's first Azerbaijan bakery opened over the summer in Adams Morgan, introducing many Washingtonians to treats like pakhlava (similar to baklava), or shekerbura, the ground hazelnut-filled pastry so intricately detailed it looks crocheted. Owner Ilhama Safarova, who immigrated to D.C about two years ago from the South Caucasian country, says they've had a warm reception since opening five months ago. "A lot of people have told us that they had the best pakhlava ever from our bakery," she says.

While pakhlava, shekerbura, and goghal (round puffed pastry filled with spices and nuts) may only be available at Sharbat, Safarova says her delicately layered honey cake is her best seller. The bakery also sells a range of cakes, plus savory options like pastries filled with feta, chicken, and veggies, and gurza, meat-filled Azerbaijani dumplings.

Rose Ave Bakery

Rose Nguyen opened her buzzy Asian-American bakery inside the Block food hall just a few days before the pandemic forced many of the city's businesses to shutter. A little over a month later, though, she started baking again—first as a one-woman production doing pre-orders only and then bringing back her team to keep up with the demand. The pediatric nurse-turned-self-taught baker honed her craft at places like Mr. Holmes Bakehouse and Ice Cream Jubilee. Now, she's dazzling DC with gorgeous creations like her matcha swiss rolls, passion fruit donuts made with sweet potato brioche and dusted with raspberry sugar, and ube brioche rolls with ube butter. (Tip: She sells 8-ounce tubs of the butter separately.)

"Although we are not a traditional Asian bakery, people tell me every single week how grateful they are that we exist in D.C. and that we make the Asian community so proud," says Nguyen.

Call Your Mother

When it first opened in 2018 in Park View, the self-described "Jew-ish" deli had lines wrapped around the block for a taste of the city's first great bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and inventive pastries. Executive chef and co-founder Daniela Moreira draws inspiration for her sweet creations from her childhood, "with my family cooking by the river in my hometown of Alta Gracia, Argentina," she says. "My dad would make a fire and my mom would make facturas (Argentinian pastries) and pan casero (traditional bread made with lard and chicharrones). My mother always made everything a little unique and with a twist—never the traditional way."

The growing local chain has opened up its latest shop in Georgetown over the summer and Moreira is still bringing her own twist by introducing new flavors to classic treats, like her black-and-white alfajores, babka muffins, and horchata Rice Krispie treats.

"Yellow is the color of happiness and optimism, and even more so in our case: perhaps a ray of hope," says Gregory Baumgartner, pastry chef at Albi and Yellow. Chef and owner Michael Rafidi opened the cafe and bakery inside his Middle Eastern-inspired Navy Yard restaurant in May, just a few months after the pandemic took hold. Since then, Baumgartner has been whipping up a ray of hope in the form of za'atar crusted croissants stuffed with labne, sweet orange blossom-glazed croissants, and smoked cinnamon date molasses kouign amann.

Famous for its hefty, gooey-centered cookies, the 25-year-old Manhattan bakery opened its first outpost outside of New York in Georgetown this September. Along with the classic lineup of flavors like chocolate chip walnut and dark chocolate chip peanut butter, the bakery made its D.C. debut by teaming up with Velez, who created a Cafe Con Leche cookie. Inspired by her grandmother in the Dominican Republic, sales from the cinnamon chocolate cookie with espresso, Valrhona Dulcey, and cashews went to a local youth non-profit organization.

Mah Ze Dahr

It was a big year for iconic New York City bakeries expanding to America's capital, as Umber Ahmad's West Village bakery transports its beloved roster of buttery treats south. Situated a stone's throw from Nationals Park in the Navy Yard, the bakery is especially treasured for its Madagascar vanilla-infused brioche donuts and a cheesecake deemed the best in the Big Apple . Named for the Urdu word that describes the essence that makes something special, Mah Ze Dahr has earned loyal devotees with treats like apricot-glazed croissant monkey bread, cream cheese-iced Cinnamon rolls, and savory baked goods.

15+ bakeries you need to check out in washington, dc, get your fix of out-of-the-oven goodness at these local spots, from bagels to sweets and much more..

When you wake up during your stay in DC, there’s a strong possibility you’re near an awesome bakery or café. We’ve laid out an all-star lineup of just such shops in the District, from mom-and-pop classics to major national operations who’ve chosen the nation’s capital as one of their select spots.

Baked by Yael

Yael Krigman’s career path did not begin on the trajectory of opening DC’s first “cakepoppery.” The owner of Baked by Yael began baking to distract herself from the bar exam and after eight years at a corporate law firm, Krigman decided to leave and pursue baking full-time. Baked by Yael is a nut-free and kosher bakery, which not only serves show-stopping cakepops, but also has some of DC’s best bagels.

Dog Tag Bakery

Enjoy some scratch-made baked goods with a purpose at Dog Tag . Every purchase goes towards empowering veterans and military families through the bakery’s fellowship program . Step inside and check out the shop’s unique chandelier and hang out in its cozy café. The menu is robust and includes pastries, breakfast and lunch options, desserts and coffee.

Cake-wich Craft Bake Shop

Cake-wich Craft

From decadent and extravagant cupcakes and cakes to custom cookies, Aleatra Dimitrijevski’s Cake-Wich Craft Bake Shop hits a sweet spot. The former local high school culinary arts teacher and Food Network competitor continues to give back to the community by hosting fundraisers for her Cupcake Dreams DC Scholarship and serving as a role model for success. Donations and orders can be made online .

Uncle Chip’s

Founded and owned by Shannon Boyle, Uncle Chip's serves up cookies and treats in Truxton Circle on North Capitol Street. Boyle wants to deliver a one-of-a-kind cookie experience , whether you pick-up in store or have the confections shipped nationwide. She spent a year working on the shop's secret recipe and that comes as no surprise as soon as you take a bite. The store is named after Shannon's own Uncle Chip, emphasizing the homespun atmosphere and offerings of the business.

Bread Furst at The Phillips Collection

Bread Furst Café at The Phillips Collection

Owner of Bread Furst , Mark Furstenberg, has DC business roots that date back to 1990 with the opening of Marvelous Market, the first DC bakery to offer traditional European breads. Prior to that, he wrote for The Washington Post and helped his sister open Politics and Prose . It’s no wonder that Furstenberg’s latest venture is a divinely DC gem, housed inside The Phillips Collection and stocked with the freshest products from local farmers only. In addition to sandwiches, soups, snacks, salads, lunch items and desserts, the café offers pastries, fresh loaves of bread, small groceries, grab-and-go refrigerated items and delicious coffee drinks.

Founded by pastry chef Tzurit Or in a home kitchen more than a decade ago, Tatte has turned both Boston and the metro DC area onto its special brand of baked items. With 11 locations in and around the District, Tatte has gone from Or’s house to a household name. The pastries draw a lot of attention, but a very gluten-friendly brunch menu means you can have a filling meal here as well.

Baker's Daughter

With shops in Ivy City, Georgetown and Downtown, Baker’s Daughter is an all-day café that clearly knows how to serve every kind of customer in DC. The boutique spot is the brainchild of the team behind Michele’s and Gravitas , two highly acclaimed eateries in the city. At Baker’s Daughter, expect to find a delightful roster of baked goods, prepared foods, gourmet groceries, breakfast items, coffee and gifts.

There’s only one place in DC that knows how to make the perfect honey cake – including cream whipped on the stove – and also offers an Azerbaijani specialty known as pakhlava (think baklava, but with simple syrup instead of honey). Founder Ilhama Safarova wanted to bring the flavors of her hometown of Baku to the nation’s capital and has done so with flying colors thanks to her bakery in Adams Morgan. The menu is un-complicated: every item is Azerbaijani in origin. You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into Safarova’s personal kitchen as you sip on a delicious cappuccino and try one of her amazing homemade items.

Rose Ave Bakery

Billing itself as an “Asian-American bakery,” Rosie Nyugen’s shop located right next to the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan Metro stop is so much more than that. Rose Ave Bakery makes its own donuts with a signature brioche, offering black sesame, pandan coconut and ube (filled with a purple cream) flavors. The creativity continues throughout the menu: there’s a caramelized croissant filled with guava jam and sweet cream cheese and a Saigon cinnamon banana cookie (a staff favorite that pairs perfectly with a cup of joe).

Opening a sister location – and a bakery no less – to a world-renowned restaurant is a risky venture. The folks behind Albi – including Chef Michael Rafidi – did it without breaking a sweat in the form of YELLOW . The Levantine menu offers mezze, hummus and pita as well as pastries that weave in French techniques and coffee offerings that pay tribute to Arabic culture. Visit YELLOW’s locations in Navy Yard and Georgetown and be on the lookout for a flagship set to open in Union Market in 2024.

Levain Bakery

Founded in 1995 in by close friends Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald, Levain Bakery has grown from a small bread shop inspired by conversations about baking to a nationwide operation. Levain made its bones with its take on the chocolate chip walnut cookie, but do not let that stop you from trying other concoctions at the Georgetown locale, from banana chocolate chip loaf cake to cinnamon butter brioche to ciabatta bread made in-house.

Seylou Bakery

Seylou is serious about its baked goods. The name means “eagle” in the Mandinka language of West Africa and trust us: this place flies high with incredible whole grain pastries and delicious bread (made with a time-honored fermentation process) from a wood-fired brick oven. The World Bread Awards recently awarded the bakery’s Pain au Levain with the major honor of America’s Best Loaf. We also highly recommend the flaky and chewy whole grain chocolate croissant.

The Cakeroom

Visit this gem in Adams Morgan when you need an adorable pick-me-up. The downstairs area features a counter full of treats. Lounge on the shop’s balcony and enjoy your cake slice, brookie or vegan Oreo cupcake. And don’t worry, they’ve got everything else too: cookies, brownies, bars, squares, cheesecake and cakes made to order.

Sticky Fingers

If you’re a vegan living in DC, there’s a strong possibility you’ve been to Sticky Fingers . The shop’s all-vegan menu includes its popular glazed doughnut, one of the city’s best and only available on weekends. On weekdays, there are plenty of other treats to choose from, as well as a savory menu. Sticky Fingers’ cowvin cookie is a local favorite. Founder Doron Petersan is a two-time winner of Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.

Baked and Wired

Baked & Wired

One of DC’s most popular bakeries is known for its “cake cups,” which are generously portioned with an unusually even ratio of moist cake to icing. A little more punk than your run-of-the-mill cupcakery, B & W wants to serve you a funfetti flavor called “Uniporn and Rainho.” For better or worse, there are about a million other things you’ll need to try here (pie slices, blondies, cookies, something aptly named the OMG bar...). Oh, and they also serve some of the most beloved hot chocolate in the District.

Another Georgetown favorite, Bakeshop is very cutely tucked away on Grace Street. The 100% vegan menu includes dairy- or egg-free cupcakes, cookies, pies and the bakery’s signature “Xtreme cakes”. Bakeshop also has locations in Arlington and Falls Church, Va.

From the brilliant mind of Dr. Winnette McIntosh Ambrose (another Cupcake Wars winner) comes Souk . Located just down the street from The Sweet Lobby, another Ambrose venture, the Eastern Market locale showcases sweet treats with an international flair as well as mouthwatering sandwiches (think a nori croissant or a pear-brie spice bun). You can also shop for more than 200 spices from around the world and grab a cup of coffee.

Fresh Baguette

Lucky for us, the name doesn’t say it all: Fresh Baguette also offers croissants, cakes, pastries, quiche, a raclette tart and so much more. Their signature baguettes are made with, and we quote, “a cold-dough process and equipment imported from France.” Authenticity is the name of the game here. Between kouign amanns, croque monsieurs, yuzu tarts and mille-feuilles, we think Paul Hollywood would be proud.

Rise Bakery

A humble shop on Adams Morgan’s bustling 18th Street NW has a major mission: baked goods for the gluten-free crowd . Not just a few treats, but everything in the store: sandwiches, bagels, chocolate babka, bread, lemon bars, cookies, etc. Rise offers nut-free and dairy-free products as well.

Get Whisked! away with this beloved DC Bakery!

Whisked DC | Carpe DC Food Tours Washington DC

You may have seen Whisked!’s  decadent, lip-smacking cookies and pies at a District Farmer’s Market or a local coffee shop window.

And while they make your heart sing for joy , and your taste buds

frolic through fields of rolled oats and swim in seas of salted caramel,

make no mistake- for all the delicious wonder that these gooey gourmet treats provide us,  they did not pop out of the sky and into beautiful  window displays.  These are the result of the one and only

Jenna Huntsberger , the CEO slash Baker Extraordinaire and her team at Whisked!

Jenna and I actually go waaayyy back to an entrepreneurship course we took at the DC Women’s Business Center a few years ago.  While her business was up and running (and mine only existed on paper) she was there to get some tips on taking her DC bakery to the next level.

And from the look (and scrumptious smell of things ) that is exactly what’s happened. Whisked! has been growing and getting quite a reputation, being featured in Cosmo, the Washington Post, Everyday with Rachel Ray, and even voted “Best Bakery” by Post Express Readers.

I caught up with Jenna at Union Kitchen to catch up and learn more about the magic behind the biz, and how she got Whisked! to where it is today.

While Jenna has always been into baking, like making cakes for her college classmates, and baking every recipe in “The Bread Bible,” she got into the DC food scene through her food blog ModernDomestic .

Through this blog, she started going to the DC Food Bloggers Happy Hour, and getting to know local bakers.  In 2010, she quit her office job to pursue baking as her career.

She started working for an online bakery, Treet, as well as other food related jobs, like being a hostess, a pastry chef for a restaurant, for SouperGirl and for The Big Cheese Food Truck.   All of these helped her learn the ropes of the food industry.

Jenna and a partner launched Whisked! in 2011, where one had the connections to farmer’s markets and one had the baking experience.

When I asked her about this partnership, she explained

“It’s totally about who you know.”

In the district’s ever-growing food scene, she needed these connections to get her pies and cookies out there, secure kitchen space to use and promote those treats.

Building a business isn’t a one man show, as they say… it takes a village.

Jenna had more than just the right combination of ingredients in the cookies, when creating Whisked!, she had a vision, connections and the kind of determination that moves mountains…… mountains and mountains of cookies!

She continued to work multiple part time jobs, driving back and forth to her rented kitchen space in Rockville MD, in a breakdown-prone cargo van , during her first year in business. (I think this could make a great movie- say Kristen Wiig ?)

Despite the potholes , and losing a partner along the way, she stuck with it.  The rented kitchen space allowed Whisked! to grow a lot from her first to second year.  And after moving to Union Kitchen, her DC bakery doubled in size again from ’13 to ’14.

So what are her secrets to success?

“You can’t have something else to fall back on,”

Sorry, what… I actually needed her to repeat that… don’t you mean you do need something to fall back on?? She says no , because this gig is soo tough, that if you have an out you’ll take it!

So now, Whisked! is starting its fifth year in business, with 5 employees, making over 3,000 cookies a week! (that’s not a typo, it’s actually 3K!)((and I haven’t even mentioned the pies!))

She switches up the menu seasonally, but some favs are always available- like the…

Wait for it-

Nutella. Cookie. (Jenna’s favorite, and um… yes, please!)

And Salty Oatmeal cookies.  Oh and who can forget the Salted Caramel Apple Pie? (no one that’s ever tried it!)

When I asked what’s next, Jenna said they’re exploring options for a possible retail space, so keep a look out for their adorable logo and pies so pretty they’ll make you stop in your tracks!

Annnd…now that you’re salivating, I won’t withhold where you can grab these amazing sweet treats.  Check out Jenna’s website-  www.whiskeddc.com . You can order online or find a store near you!

You cannot talk about food in Georgetown without mentioning one of its more well known foodies, Julia Child.

Her house is not near anything else however so its not included on this tour route, but you'll find details and stop at the end of the tour.

It is on the east end of Georgetown so on the way to or from Foggy Bottom Metro Station if you're walking from there.

Julia Child's House (optional side trip)

bakery tour dc

At the end of Olive Street at the far east end of Georgetown, you'll find a wooden house the color of butter. This was the home of Julia and Paul Child after their time in France in the late 1950s.

It was at this house where Julia tested recipes that would become her famed "Mastering the Art of French Cooking."

She would host dinner parties where local ladies would come to try their hand at cooking. Katherine Graham, owner of the Washington Post, was a member of these weekly dinners.

The husbands were invited under two conditions - the men had to eat everything on their plates and could make no complaints.

To start the tour, we recommend beginning at Baked & Wired. This is very much not "saving the best for last" as Baked & Wired is nearly every locals favourite spot. Its not longer a secret, even though there is not a TV show about it, so expect to wait in line - but its worth it, promise!

  A. Baked & Wired

1052 Thomas Jefferson Street, NW Sunday-Friday: 8am-4pm Saturday: 6pm

Baked & Wired has been here since 2004, so it is one of the original dessert locations in Georgetown before the "cupcake craze" hit Washington DC. The store was opened and is run by the Velazquez family - fueled by mom's love of baking, dad's love of coffee and the kids behind the counter. It is now much more than a family run bakery but it still has that family feel to the establishment.

In an 8 week hunt to find best cupcake in the city, Post named it one of the best. I'm quite partial to their "OMG" which are very aptly named.

If you like S'mores, try these! The Elvis Impersonator Cakecup made the Thrillist Bucket List of things to eat in DC. Their desserts are all delicious so you cannot go wrong but don't fill up here as we still have a lot more to go!

One of the best photo spots for your visit to Georgetown is here along the Canal , with the small colorful canal houses along the waterfront. From Baked & Wired cross over the canal and turn left (west) to walk along the canal keeping the old canal boat to your left.

Find a place to stop along the towpath for our next stop. We'll be turn left at the next intersection on 31st Street NW.

B. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath

bakery tour dc

The C&O Canal was an effort to continue bringing industry to the Towne of George. Once the Potomac River silted up and ships were no longer able to easily traverse, Georgetown risked losing its status as a port city.

The groundbreaking on July 4, 1828 happened on a hot and humid day without the desired fanfare. President John Q. Adams had been toasted, dined and escorted up the Potomac River only to hit rocks when he first tried to break ground.

It took a couple of tries and throwing off his jacket in order to be successful but this was a sign of the difficulties that lay ahead. It would not be completed until 1850.

It was meant to run from Georgetown all the way to Ohio, but made it as far as Cumberland, Maryland. The C&O Canal was a site of contention during the Civil War where both sides blocked the waterway, burnt the ships, and claimed it as their own.

The battle lines crossed back and forth over the canal through the war.

Today the C&O Canal is 184 miles with 74 locks as you head west to allow canals to travel in both directions. Up until the late 2000s, mule driven canal boats would take tourists up and down the canal.

When you get to the first road intersection of 31st NW take the crosswalk across the street but turn left to stay on the road instead of the canal towpath. You'll get Water Alley on your right, if its not blocked this is a nice shortcut. If you'd rather not (though its perfectly safe), take your next right on South Street Northwest and then back right up 32st NW.  On the corner of 32st St NW and Grace Street NW, you'll see the next stop, Dog Tag Bakery.

C. Dog Tag Bakery

3206 Grace St NW Sunday-Saturday 8am-5pm. Monday-Tuesday, Thursday-Friday 7am-4pm CLOSED WEDNESDAYS

This is a great place for more savory snacks if you think you'll be at risk of a sugar high at the end of the tour. There are tables and chairs if you want a sit down break along the way.

Dogtag Bakery: Georgetown Cupcakes Tour

This new bakery on the block comes with a mission and a hashtag: #bakingadifference. Dog Tag, Inc gives veterans a work study program to help them get back to civilian life in coordination with Georgetown University.

The six month program in business administration culminates in on the job training in small business operations here at Dog Tag Bakery where they manage, work with customers and in the kitchen.

This building still retains the industrial character of its original purpose. You'll see an old tabulating machine in the corner.

Georgetown industrial complex here along the waterfront was the home to Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company. The headquarters was actually on 31st NW a few blocks away.

The Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company would later become the International Business Machines, or IBM.

There is also a dog tag chandelier made of 3456 dogtags honoring military veterans.

Exit Dog Tag Bakery heading toward your left. Grace Street will continue along old warehouse buildings until it dead ends at a little park along the waterfront. When you're in the park with the canal to your back, notice the large white warehouse with the stars.

D. Bomford Flour Mill:

bakery tour dc

This is now an office building, as most of the warehouses have been turned into in this revitalized area. The building was built by George Bomford in 1832 as a flour mill. Not long after it was burned down.

When he rebuilt it in 1840s, he made it a cotton mill because there was less competition in the cotton market. It had a water wheel, over 100 looms and 3000 spindles and employed over 100 men and women worked here until after the Civil War when cotton dried up.

In 1866 it was bought and converted back to a flour mill. This was last remaining working mill until it closed in the 1960s.

It was owned by Wilkens and Rogers from 1916 until they moved to Ellicott City in Maryland, where they still run a flour company. It is sold today as Washington Flour.

Cross over the canal on the wooden steps - work off those desserts from earlier stops! You'll find Olivia Macaron shop facing the alley on your right.

E. Olivia Macaron: 3222 M St NW Sundays: 11am-7pm Monday-Saturday: 10am-8pm

bakery tour dc

The first question most people ask is ... Wait! These aren't Macaroons. You are right, they are not. Macaroons are a coconut dessert, these are Macarons (pronounced mac-a-ron) which are a french pastry made of almond flour and buttercream filling.

Named after one of the owners daughters and occasionally you can see Olivia behind the counter. Ana Claudia had the business savvy and Michel, who studied in France, had the recipes and together they opened this dessert shop in 2013.

You'll notice that the storefront isn't very large and in fact, the macarons are made in Fairfax and brought in each morning.

Its not only a delicious stop, it is very Instagram-able! Salted Caramel is one of the most popular flavors but there are so many to chose from.

These hold well and are packaged nicely so if you don't think you'll be able to visit everything in, get these to go and save them for later.

F. Georgetown Market

bakery tour dc

3276 M Street NW

If you were visiting Washington in the 1800s you'd find proper markets throughout the city where farmers, bakers, butchers all sold their wares throughout the week.

The Archives on Constitution Ave NW stands where Central Market used to be and the only market that remains standing as an independent market is Eastern Market (a must visit!) in SE DC.

A market has been at this location since 1790 but this building dates to 1865. The Georgetown Market still stands today. In 1996, Congress declared it an historic site with the requirement that it operates as a market.

Cross over M St NW to walk north along Potomac Ave NW. You'll see a storefront that says Georgetown Cupcakes with no line! Don't get too excited - this is just where they keep their delivery orders. The actual storefront for the public is later on the tour. When you get to N St NW turn right and walk until the corner of Wisconsin Ave NW and N ST NW.

G. Martin's Tavern

1264 Wisconsin Ave NW Saturday and Sunday: 8am-1:30am Monday-Thursday: 11am-1:30am Friday: 11am-2:30am

Martin's Tavern, sometimes just called Billy Martin's to the neighborhood folks, opened in 1933 - the day after prohibition ended (so you know what he was doing during prohibition!). It was opened by Billy Martin and is still run by Billy Martin - just the fourth generation. It is the longest family run restaurant still in operation in DC.

The joke is - if you eat at Martin's, you might be come president. Lyndon B. Johnson, the Trumans, Nixon liked the meatloaf. JFK used to eat there as a bachelor and later when he was dating Jackie.

Martin's will tell you that in Booth 3, JFK proposed to Jackie. (A hotel in Boston claims that and some people say he proposed over telegram) but they did at least celebrate at Martin's!

Martin's also holds the right to say that they've served every President since they've opened. Except Obama. Nothing political there, its just that secret service changed regulations since Obama became president and Martins doesn't have the required number of exits.

From Martin's Tavern, continue north up the hill of Wisconsin Ave NW. You'll want to cross the street at some point and at the corner of P St NW and Wisconsin, look for the bright awning of Thomas Sweets.

Thomas Sweets Georgetown

H. Thomas Sweet 3214 P St NW Sunday-Thursday: 11am-midnight Friday-Saturday: 11am-1am

Thomas Sweet is known for a number of flavors of both their ice creams and homemade fudge. Started in 1979 in NJ, the local store opened in 1984 in Georgetown.

When they opened, Thomas Sweet allowed guests to pick a flavor of ice cream and a topping to mix in. This might sound commonplace today but it was relatively unheard of in the 1980s.

If Obama hasn't been to Martin's, he has been here. The girls treated him to ice cream on Father's Day in 2011.

We recommending grabbing a small (or large!) ice cream and taking it with you as you walk as it can get crowded inside the small shop.

You will want to continue west along P St NW by crossing Wisconsin Ave. P Street does not cross the street directly so you'll have to walk down the hill a bit to get back onto P Street.

I. Ambassador Bruce House 1422 34th St NW

Built in 1815, The home’s most famous residents were Ambassador David K.E. Bruce and his wife, Evangeline Bell Bruce. One of America’s most popular postwar diplomats, Bruce served every president from Harry S. Truman to Gerald R. Ford. He was the U.S. envoy to France, Germany, Britain, China and NATO.

Evangeline Bruce turned heads with her beauty and fashion. Considered one of the best dressed women in the world, Evangeline had a line of maternity wear created for her by Dior. Although she disdained the term “hostess,” she was a Georgetown socialite without peer.

The parties she and her husband held at this home were the highlight of the Washington social scene. Most of the entertaining was done in the 34-foot ballroom the Bruce's added in the 1970s.

Now the ballroom is a drawing room - the space has 12-foot ceilings, three Jefferson windows that open to the garden and a large fireplace with a carved wooden mantel.

Keep heading south down the hill of 34th Street NW until you reach Prospect Street NW. Here you have a decision to make: cupcakes or pie.... or both.

If you want cupcakes, turn left along Prospect to the next block - 33rd Street. Because of the often long line, it saves you some backtracking to walk down to Georgetown Cupcakes from 33rd and Prospect. Turn right on 33rd and make your way to the line. Don't worry if its pretty far from the store, they'll come by with menus.

J. Georgetown Cupcakes 3301 M St NW Sunday: 10am-8pm Monday-Saturday: 10am-9pm

This needs no introduction. The well known TV show - DC Cupcakes - is based on this shop. Run by two sisters, Katherine and Sophie, and opened in 2008, it is one of the more well known cupcake shops in Georgetown.

As you'll see based on the line out front. On some days they even have a bouncer at the door.

The key to their cupcakes is the icing. Rather than the standard buttercream, Georgetown Cupcakes uses vanilla cream cheese. There are over 100 flavors but each day there is a special off the menu flavor.

You can find it on their social media sites - and the first 100 people to order it by name get it for free!

If pies, both sweet and savory are more your style, keep heading down until M St NW and turn right onto M.

K. Pie Sisters 3423 M St. NW Sunday & Wednesday: 11am-7pm CLOSED MONDAY & TUESDAY Thursday-Saturday: 11am-9pm

Also a family business, Pie Sisters is run by three sisters who grew up baking pies. Known for both sweet and savory pies this could be a final dessert stop or a chance to get something more substantial. Their Classic Apple pie is better than grandmas.

Underground Donut Tour comes to nation’s capital

UndergroundDonutTour_DC.jpg

The Underground Donut Tour has announced that it’s launching its next US tour in Washington, DC. The leading donut tour has been running for seven years across the US, UK and Ireland, including Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, Portland, Seattle, Boston, Nashville, Miami, New Orleans, London, Dublin, Las Vegas and now Washington, DC.

“We’re so excited to launch the donut tour in Washington DC. Our nation’s capital truly has some of the nation’s best donuts. If there’s one issue everyone can agree on, it’s that donuts are delicious,” says Jeff Woelker, founder of the Underground Donut Tour.

Attendees will walk between four of the most interesting donut shops in downtown DC and tour guides share the history of each location, along with many local sights, sounds and tastes of the area. The tour primarily takes place downtown near Lafayette Square, the White House, Palmer Alley, Chinatown and the Mt. Vernon Triangle neighborhood.

“You’re absolutely going to love these donuts. And trust us, you’re definitely going to get your fill of our nation’s donut history and our nation’s best donuts,” says Jimmy Meritt, tour manager for the Underground Donut Tour DC.

Tours ($40 for adults and $25 for kids 10 and under) will start on Friday, November 18 and run year-round. Tours run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 am with more days and times coming soon.

Ellē is a darling little gem in the very trendy Mt. Pleasant neighborhood and is one of the best bakeries in DC. One of our favorite things about walking up to Ellē is the 80-year-old “Hellers” bakery sign that still adorns the building with only the letters “elle” still illuminated. This bakery and café serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but their baked goods are what have people visiting from far and wide. Ellē rotates a lot of their offerings each day, but they still have a few daily mainstays that we love. They always offer a honey goat cheesecake with seasonal flavors like cranberry with gingerbread crumb. Their guava turnover is one of the most unique and delicious pastries you’ll ever try—you really can’t visit Ellē without ordering it. It always sells out quickly, so make sure you arrive early. We also love Ellē’s loaves of bread, scones, and fresh doughnuts, all of which are served on adorable antique china. It gets very busy here on weekends, but if you’re visiting just for the baked goods or desserts, you can order them to-go right from the counter so you don’t have to fight for a seat (although we have a feeling you might want to stay awhile).

For years, Tatte Bakery and Café was something you could only visit on trips to Boston, but DC lucked out when Tatte decided to expand to DC with three locations: Dupont, West End, and Bethesda. Their cakes, tarts, and pastries taste as good as they look. And the ambiance in their cafes is bright and charming. If you need to order a whole cake, pie, or tart, this is the place– they have a huge variety available, as well individual pastries, desserts, and beautifully wrapped gifts for any foodie in your life. The earlier in the day you go, the better selection of pastries you’ll have. We love the gorgeous pear tart, the chocolate or cinnamon roses, or the chocolate snail (made with flaky croissant dough with chocolate pastry cream and chocolate chunks). Their individual cheesecake cups, pavlovas, and meringues are all incredible. But our very favorite thing here is the passionfruit krembo, which is a little tart with passionfruit curd, topped with a vanilla meringue swirl, and dipped in passionfruit chocolate (looks just like the top of a soft-serve ice cream cone). For us, the krembo alone makes Tatte one of the best bakeries in DC!

10. Sidekick Bakery

From croissants to cheesecakes, cupcakes, and chocolate, we’ve rounded up the very best bakeries in DC for you to work (eat) your way through!

If you’re a lover of the famous DC chain Ted’s Bulletin (our go-to local place when friends come to visit DC), you’ll be happy to know they have introduced their first exclusive bakery. Located in Arlington at Ballston, just across the river from DC, Sidekick is next door to the newest Ted’s Bulletin and is quickly earning an incredible reputation as one of the best bakeries in DC. Of course, they have the homemade Pop-Tarts that made Ted’s famous—we love the strawberry and the brown sugar ones best. Their Cinnamon Toast Crunch banana bread is also unique and yummy. We definitely recommend Sidekick’s savory and sweet croissants, which are huge and feature fun, creative flavors such as their seasonal offering that’s filled with tart cranberries and rich orange pastry cream then covered in sweet pink icing for the perfect balance. Don’t forget to try one of their beloved salted chocolate chip cookies. If you already know and love Ted’s desserts, this is the DC bakery for you!

9. Mah-Ze-Dahr

Mah-Ze-Dahr is a very well-known James Beard-nominated bakery from New York City and is now one of the best bakeries in DC, with two locations– one in Navy Yard and the other in Arlington. If you go, expect to spend a small fortune because you will want to try one of everything. Start with their cherry scone, which is studded with sour cherries from Michigan, and is our favorite thing in their gorgeous pastry case. A close second is their brioche doughnut, which is filled with a delicious vanilla pastry cream (they even include the doughnut hole on top). Mah-Ze-Dahr is known for their cheesecake which has a dark cookie crust. Besides that, their selection is always plentiful with various cookies, brownies, choux pastries, croissants, you name it! And if you need a little gift for someone, they have a great selection of treats in elegant packaging. If you go, go early– they run out of their most popular items by the late morning.

8. Pluma by Bluebird

bakery tour dc

For years DC’s acclaimed Bluebird Bakery only delivered their signature pastries to local restaurants and coffee shops. But in 2018, proprietors Camila Arango and Tom Wellings opened their very own café, Pluma by Bluebird, serving up their delicious pastries and baked goods at NoMa’s Union Market. The café is bright and cheery, with blue floor tiles that they ordered from Columbia, where Camila is from. Bakery favorites include their pistachio-chocolate croissants, the morning buns with orange zest and cardamon sugar, and their chocolate rye & sea salt cookies. If you’re there in the morning, grab a coconut yogurt with homemade granola to go with your pastries– you won’t be sorry.

7. Un Je Ne Sais Quoi

Un Je Ne Sais Quoi (pronounced uh-juh-nuh-say-qwa) has the prettiest pastries and desserts of all the bakeries in our guide. You’re going to fall in love the moment you walk in and see their gorgeous display, which could easily rival those found in Belgium or Paris. Although they have a huge variety of baked goods, they are famous for their Merveilleux (French for marvelous and pronounced mair-vay-yuh).  This “marvelous” dessert is very light and airy, made of meringue and whipped cream, then covered in chocolate shavings. They offer the Merveilleux in dark chocolate, coffee, white chocolate, and Speculoos—which is our absolute favorite. There are other delicious pastries at Un Je Ne Sais Quoi, but trust us when we say the Merveilleux is the thing to order.

6. Fresh Baguette

From croissants to cheesecakes, cupcakes, and chocolate, we’ve rounded up the very best bakeries in DC for you to work (eat) your way through!

Fresh Baguette is the closest thing you will find to an authentic French café in DC. It’s the perfect spot to grab lunch and then sample all their delicious pastries. Their ham & cheese baguette will transport you straight to the cobblestone streets of Paris. Their desserts and pastries are incredibly gorgeous, but they taste even better than they look. Their Berryline Croissant with strawberry cream and a Sable Breton biscuit baked inside is one-of-a-kind and delicious! Their brioche knots with Nutella are unreal and just melt in your mouth. We always devour their perfectly-filled apple chaussons. But, as their name implies, the real show-stoppers at this little patisserie are the French baguettes, which are baked fresh every two hours and taste exactly like the ones in the City of Lights. The original two locations are in Maryland, but we especially love the one in Georgetown.

5. Seylou Bakery

From croissants to cheesecakes, cupcakes, and chocolate, we’ve rounded up the very best bakeries in DC for you to work (eat) your way through!

Seylou Bakery is certainly the most unique and understated bakery on our guide to best bakeries in DC. From the moment you walk into this bright, beautiful bakery, you know these guys take things seriously. They have bags of organic grains piled high, a giant mill that is busy grinding all their own flour, and an impressive oven brought all the way over from Spain that permeates the air with the heavenly smell of freshly baked bread. Everything is good at Seylou, but you absolutely cannot come here without trying their 100% whole wheat chocolate croissant. It. Is. SO. Good. You should also order their Pain Aux Raisin, which is so rich, flavorful, and filled with moist, tea-soaked raisins. If you visit on a weekend, go early– many of their customer favorites sell out very quickly. And don’t forget to take home a freshly-baked loaf of bread for dinner– we love their Pain Au Levain.

4. Levain Bakery

Now that Levain Bakery has come to DC, there is no reason to go to New York City (kidding, of course). The iconic New York City bakery has drawn huge crowds from their first day open, and has quickly become one of the best bakeries in DC, with locations in Georgetown and Bethesda. Levain is most well-known for their huge decadent cookies, but they have many other noteworthy baked goods. Their baguette with butter and jam is mouthwatering and one of our favorite things to eat in the morning (get it early as it often sells out quickly). Their various loaf cakes, chocolate chip brioche, blueberry muffins, and sticky buns are all definitely worth trying someday. But the cookies are definitely what you are here for; they are huge, warm, and absolutely scrumptious. The most popular one is the chocolate chip and walnut cookie, but we also highly recommend grabbing one of the chocolate cookies with peanut butter chips.

3. Baked & Wired

From croissants to cheesecakes, cupcakes, and chocolate, we’ve rounded up the very best bakeries in DC for you to work (eat) your way through!

The lines are often out the door, but don’t let that stop you. If you ask a DC local where to find the best cupcake in DC, without a doubt they will tell you, “Baked & Wired!” This cute, little bakery on a quiet side street in Georgetown offers delicious, moist cupcakes that are big enough to share (if you’re into that) in a wide variety of flavors. You should never leave Baked & Wired without ordering a strawberry cupcake– our favorite flavor, with Texas sheet cake being a close second. Even though they are known for their cupcakes, Baked & Wired is a full-service bakery with cookies, brownies, ice cream sandwiches, homemade marshmallows, and at least a dozen other delicious goodies offered each day.

2. Buttercream Bakeshop (Temporarily Closed)

From croissants to cheesecakes, cupcakes, and chocolate, we’ve rounded up the very best bakeries in DC for you to work (eat) your way through!

Buttercream Bakeshop opened its doors in the Shaw neighborhood a few years ago and DC has never been the same. It’s near the top of our guide of the best bakeries in DC because of its huge selection of thoughtfully crafted, jaw-dropping desserts offered on the daily. We can’t ever seem to escape without a full box of treats because we have too many favorites here. If we had to choose, our number one pick would be the 808 Bar– the pasty chef’s nod to growing up in Hawaii; it has a chocolate-macadamia nut crust, a pile of coconut cream, and a decadent chocolate ganache topping. The Cinnascone (cinnamon roll-scone mashup) is their most iconic item– make sure you have them warm it up slightly so the cinnamon glaze is just perfectly melted when you take that first bite. Buttercream’s brownie, pie, cupcake, and cream puff flavors rotate daily, which always keeps us coming back for more. You can box your treats up to take home, but you may want to take the time to sit and enjoy a pastry (or four) amongst the shop’s delicate decor and gorgeous fresh flower arrangements that are delivered each week. (Buttercream is temporarily closed due to the pandemic. Watch their website for information on special orders and opening details.)

1. Rose Ave Bakery

bakery tour dc

Rose Ave Bakery is an Asian-American bakery located inside The Block in DC. Owner Rosie Nguyen, a self-taught baker and former pediatric nurse, opened Rose Ave during the pandemic and it became one of the best bakeries in DC overnight. The menu changes every week, but always consists of a few fan favorites. The list of pastries you must order is as long as the lines around the block. The passionfruit donut is made of fluffy brioche, filled with passionfruit curd, dusted with pink raspberry sugar, and garnished with rose petals. It’s so good that they say they will never take it off the ever-changing menu. Also always on the menu is the Ensaymada cruffin, a sweet Filipino cheese roll made with flaky croissant dough and topped with grated cheese. You can always find unique Asian flavors like ube, mochi, pandan, and matcha. They also have some amazing savory choices like their scallion pancake bun, inspired by Taiwanese scallion pancake, but in a croissant/cruffin form, sprinkled with Asian-inspired “everything bagel” seasoning. If it’s your first time at Rose Ave, you may want to order the Rose Ave Special Box with six of their best sellers. Currently, all orders must be placed Sunday at 5 pm for pick up the following weekend (They usually sell out in a few minutes, so set that alarm!),  and check their website detailed pickup instructions. If you want to try your luck and walk in, check the hours online, and bring a bottle of water and a book to read if it’s the weekend. Bottom line: these unique pastries are worth every bit of effort.

14 Best Restaurants in Washington DC

Dining in America’s capital means a diversity of flavors! Here are the best restaurants in Washington DC .

One of my favorite things to do when I visit Washington DC is to eat! There are so many delicious restaurants to choose from, but I’ve rounded up some of my favorites. Read on to find out where to eat in Washington DC .

Where to Eat in Washington DC

1. bulldog sports bar.

Pizza, Sports Bar

Bulldog is an unassuming sports bar in Chinatown that serves pizza, wings, loaded fries, sliders, and mac & cheese skillets.

The vibes are a little bit hard rock, but it’s not so loud inside that you can’t have a conversation. They have multiple levels of seating, and you can kick back and enjoy a game.

I recommend the Carnivore Pizza, the Garlic Parmesan Chicken Wings (I love that their garlic parm is wet instead of a dry rub like most other places!), and their Caesar Salad.

713 H St NW, Washington, DC 20001

2. Levain Bakery

Bakery, Cookies, Breakfast

Levain Bakery is a popular Georgetown bakery for their huge cookies (and I mean, huge!)

They’re most known for their Chocolate Chip Walnut cookies, but all of their options are delicious. They also sell loaf cakes, breads, and pastries, so this is a great spot to grab breakfast on the go. Just don’t be surprised if it’s crowded at all hours!

My favorites were their Dark Chocolate Chip and their Two Chip Chocolate Chip Cookies. Kevin liked their Chocolate Chip Walnut cookie the best.

3131 M St NW, Washington, DC 20007

3. Irish Channel Restaurant & Pub

Irish Channel Restaurant & Pub is a Penn Quarter/Chinatown restaurant run by a certified chef from Cork County, Ireland. The restaurant is located at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Washington, DC/Downtown .

As you would imagine, they serve authentic Irish pub classics, have live music three nights a week, and open early for Tottenham Spurs Premiere League games.

I recommend the Guinness Stew or the Fish N’ Chips, both classic dishes.

500 H St NW, Washington, DC 20001

4. Clyde’s of Georgetown

American, Bar

Clyde’s of Georgetown is a long-running local chain that started here in Georgetown in 1963. This saloon-like restaurant was one of the first in Washington DC to offer locally-raised and sustainable foods.

Clyde’s is Georgetown’s original local watering hole. Their menu serves brunch every day until 4 p.m., burgers and sandwiches, and American classics from Chesapeake Bay Blue Catfish to Meatloaf.

I recommend the French Toast or the Eggs Chesapeake if you’re in the mood for brunch, or the Chicken #1 sandwich for lunch or dinner.

Clyde’s of Georgetown: 3236 M St NW, Washington, DC 20007

Clyde’s of Gallery Place: 707 7th St NW, Washington, DC 20001

5. Hank’s Oyster Bar

Seafood, Oysters

Hank’s Oyster Bar has been serving up delicious seafood in DC since 2005. They have two DC locations: one at The Wharf and one at Dupont Circle. That means you’re never too far from Hank’s when you’re exploring DC’s top attractions !

On the menu, you’ll find a fresh selection of East and West coast oysters, crabs, lobster rolls, po’boys, and seafood platters. And during cherry blossom season , they have some great Japanese-inspired specials.

I recommend the Popcorn Shrimp & Calamari to start, and the Fried Oyster Dinner or the Seafood Fettuccine.

The Wharf: 701 Wharf St SW, Washington, DC 20024

Dupont Circle: 1624 Q St NW STE 100, Washington, DC 20009

6. Whiskey Charlie

Rooftop Bar

Whiskey Charlie is a rooftop bar at The Wharf on top of the Canopy by Hilton Washington DC The Wharf .

They have a 10th floor outdoor deck with waterfront views, an indoor lounge, premium cocktails, and finger foods. This is a great place for pre-dinner drinks and appetizers.

I recommend the Gulf Shrimp Cocktail and the Mese Hummus to eat. To drink, go for the Purser’s Bane, the Coastal Vibes, or the Captain’s Choice.

975 7th St SW, Washington, DC 20024

7. Yard House

Yard House is high-end sports bar chain with a location in DC’s Chinatown serving up classic American bar fare.

They have a huge menu with over 100 American-style dishes made from scratch daily, from burgers to tacos to steaks. And they have the world’s largest selection of draft beer with 100 taps.

I recommend the Grilled Cheese & Tomato Bisque or the “Everything-Crusted” Ahi Tuna sandwich.

812 7th St NW, Washington, DC 20001

Japanese, Sushi

Momiji is a Chinatown restaurant for some great Japanese food, sushi, and hibachi.

The restaurant has two levels with a rooftop deck. Their menu features creatively named rolls, handmade cocktails, and delicious hibachi meals.

I recommend the Rock n’ Roll or the Sushi Sandwich.

505 H St NW, Washington, DC 20001

9. Tiki TNT

Bar, Tropical

Tiki TNT & Potomac Distilling Company is a restaurant and bar atop a rum distillery at The Wharf where you can find Hawaiian-themed dishes. Come here for the tiki vibes, beachy escape, and open-air rooftop dining by the waterfront.

On the menu, you’ll find small bites like poke and shrimp as well as a very few bigger items like a burger and flat bread.

I recommend the Tuna Poke, the Bang Bang Shrimp, or the Pu Pu Platter for a little of everything.

1130 Maine Ave SW, Washington, DC 20024

10. City Tap House

City Tap House is a regional chain with locations in Penn Quarter and Dupont Circle. This tap house serves p craft food and craft beer.

The menu serves American bar favorites from sandwiches to brick oven pizza to sirloin. The food and drinks here were delicious, but I didn’t like their ordering system.

You don’t get a waiter, instead you have to order from your phone, their system was incredibly slow, and there’s no other option. I feel like that’s a huge accessibility problem. Older folks who aren’t as adept at using their phones or international visitors who don’t have service wouldn’t be able to eat here (and there wasn’t any public wi-fi either).

That said, I do recommend the Rigatoni Roma or the Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup. To drink, I recommend the Cucumber Crusher or the Passionista.

Penn Quarter: 901 9th St NW, Washington, DC 20001

Dupont: 1250 Connecticut Ave NW suite 105, Washington, DC 20036

11. Tony Cheng’s

Chinese, Asian

Tony Cheng’s Mongolian Restaurant is a multi-level Chinatown restaurant for classic Chinese dishes.

You’ll find dim sum being served upstairs and a Mongolian barbecue buffet served downstairs. We enjoyed doing their dim sum.

I recommend the Mongolian Beef, the General Tso’s Chicken, and Chow Mein.

619 H St NW, Washington, DC 20001

12. Food Court at Fashion Centre at Pentagon City

If you’re out shopping or maybe visited the Pentagon for a tour in the morning and need a quick place for lunch, the food court at Fashion Centre at Pentagon City has some good options.

1100 S Hayes St, Arlington, VA 22202

Restaurants at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

Need somewhere to eat in the airport before you fly out? Here are my recommendations:

13. Matsutake Sushi

Matsutake Sushi is a full-service Japanese and sushi restaurant in the Regan National Airport. You’ll find it in the main hall of Terminal 2 past security, near C Gates.

They have signature sushi rolls, hibachi-style dishes, noodle and rice bowls, plus a bar.

I recommend the Dynamite Roll and the Yellowtail Roll.

Reagan National Airport National Hall, 2401 Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Access Rd, Arlington, VA 22202

14. American Tap Room

American, Diner

American Tap Room is a full-service American restaurant in the Regan National Airport. You’ll find it in Terminal 2 past security, in the middle of D Gates.

It’s called a tap room, but really I found the menu more diner-style. They serve breakfast, sandwiches, and salads. They also have a full bar with cocktails and plenty of beer.

I recommend the Basil Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich or the Steak Sandwich.

Reagan National Airport, 2401 Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Access Rd, Arlington, VA 22202

Hampton Inn Washington-Downtown-Convention Center

We enjoyed our stay at the Hampton Inn Washington-Downtown-Convention Center when attending an event at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

This hotel has a great location. It’s just on the edge of Chinatown and is within easy walking distance to the National Mall and all the tourist hot spots. There are plenty of restaurant options and nightlife nearby.

Canopy by Hilton Washington DC The Wharf

We love the location of the Canopy by Hilton Washington DC The Wharf , though the hotel’s customer service could use some work.

The Wharf is a great spot to be for beautiful waterfront views and lots of dining and nightlife . It’s also only a 10-15 minute walk from two different Metro stations, and it’s really easy to get to and from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Here, Alexa Moore takes us on a two-mile-long amble through the historic streets of Georgetown, Washington, DC.

Washington, DC , is not simply cherry blossoms and politics. It's a city with complex and diverse stories, expertly dissected into four quadrants: Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast, and at the center of it all lies the US Capitol . DC's oldest stories hide amongst the historic streets of Georgetown, in DC's Northwest. US presidents and Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor once called this place home. It was also home to an African-American community. Resident numbers have dwindled, but remnants like the First Baptist Church of Georgetown , founded by a former enslaved man, still stand firm.

So, let's begin our walk.

Distance: Approx 2 miles Total walk time: 45 minutes at a leisurely pace

Any good stroll in DC must start with coffee. I'm the kind of gal who needs a little motivation to get my steps in, so I stop into Baked and Wired . The pink window panes beckon me into the split bakery and coffee shop. A dirty chai with house-made horchata is what I order – it's only 9am and I can't justify my usual red velvet cupcake this early in the day.

Left: A coffee from Baked and Wired, Georgetown; Right: Walking along the C&O Canal

With long and slow strides, I stroll down picturesque Canal Street briefly. It's adjacent to the currently semi-barren C&O Canal , and the loveliest little brick houses juxtapose its dry, muddy banks. I resist the temptation to search for their property value on Zillow.

I turn right to head up M St, Georgetown's famous shopping promenade. All the buildings are different hues, yet there's a subtle uniformity. The storefront windows are like portals into wild worlds of fashion I cannot afford. I pass the oldest unchanged structure in the city, the tan-colored relic aptly named the Old Stone House , built in 1765.

Photo collage. Left: Shops lining Georgetown; Right: Beautiful gold bank in Georgetown

Approaching the intersection of M St and Wisconsin Ave, I meet my favorite golden-domed Neoclassical building. I adore how the dome's reflective golden hue brightens up Georgetown's streets. Built in the 1920s, it now operates as a PNC bank branch. My mind can't help but wonder how it shined in its heyday, so to Google I go. Turns out, even a century ago, it was still a bank , a reassuring reminder that while things evolve in the rest of DC and the wider world, things tend to stay the same in Georgetown.

I do a quick heel stretch before turning right and starting my ascent up Wisconsin Ave. If you continue this path, you'll eventually pass green areas like Book Hill Park and the Dumbarton Oaks Museum and Garden . However, on this particularly chilly (and lazy) spring day, I ditch my usual hike and swing left onto N St, gazing at the manicured gardens of homes and the ruby-red-brick sidewalks that lay below.

Left: A beautiful yellow townhome in Georgetown, DC; Right: the controversial "Transformers House"

I find myself at 3260 N St, uncovering a slice of presidential (and very romantic) history. President John F Kennedy rented this home while running for Senate and met Jackie Onassis, the future First Lady, at a nearby Georgetown dinner party in 1952 .

Turning down 35th St, I arrive at Georgetown University's campus. I spot the controversial Transformers -decorated house and can't help but giggle. The burly machines juxtapose the manicured brick facade, and the "Robots in Disguise" are the stars of an ongoing legal battle between the homeowner and the city on whether the statues can stay.

A narrow set of steps in Georgetown, DC – featured in "The Exorcist"

I'm searching for something I haven't seen before – the infamous steps used in the climactic ending of the 1973 film The Exorcist . They're steep. There's something a bit eerie about this tucked-away staircase, so I use the handrails and focus carefully as I descend.

I continue this journey down through the Francis Scott Key Memorial Park , cross the Alexandria Aqueduct Bridge , and eventually find my way back to the C&O Canal Towpath . What a difference a few blocks make, as this side boasts mossy-green grass and pools of water reflecting the fluffy clouds above.

Finally, I head towards the river and my favorite sitting spot at the Georgetown Waterfront Park . I end my nearly two-mile saunter on a bench near the twisting path of the park's Labyrinth , a bit regretful that I didn't buy that red velvet cupcake after all.

The 31 best things to do in D.C. this weekend and next week

Ever wish you could be in two (or four) places at once? The next few weeks are full of FOMO, the fear of missing out. On Saturday alone, you’ve got hundreds of bands playing outdoors at Petworth PorchFest, seven D.C. museums offering special activities during Do the Loop day, DJs spinning dance music during Project Glow, the D.C. Cocktail Festival, a screening of “The Lord of the Rings” inside the National Building Museum, and cultural festivals from Purcellville to Suitland. On the same day, families can celebrate the reopening of the Glen Echo carousel with an afternoon of activities, or visit the D.C. Public Library’s book festival for young readers. Speaking of books, it’s also Independent Bookstore Day. Tough choices will have to be made, but at least you know some of your options.

Thursday, April 25

It’s Your Mug 30th Anniversary at the Kennedy Center

In the mid-1990s, a Georgetown coffeehouse called It’s Your Mug was the epicenter of Washington’s poetry scene: It was, according to a 1997 Washington Post story , “the hallmark for New Age Black poetry in Washington and the place where [poet and host Toni Asante] Lightfoot single-handedly popularized the open mic.” Diverse groups of writers read everything from works in progress to erotica. When the two-level coffee shop closed, Lightfoot and poets dispersed back to bars and cafes on U Street, such as Mango’s, but It’s Your Mug’s influence hasn’t diminished. To mark its 30th anniversary, Lightfoot and a number of the open mic’s regulars are gathering at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, including performance artist Holly Bass, rapper and educator Toni Blackman, and Words Beats and Life’s Director of Poetry Patrick Washington, for an evening of lyricism accompanied by live jazz. 6 p.m. Free .

Spirit Week at Other Half

Dressing up in themed outfits, chalking up sidewalks, decorating hallways: Spirit week is a staple of high school life — and now a brewery in Ivy City. Other Half is hosting Spirit Week at all seven of its locations, including D.C., with new beers and different discounts for participating each day. Start Thursday with Decade Day, which offers 10 percent off for those dressed in outfits from a different decade. Friday’s Twin Day means buy one, get one free pints for two people in matching outfits. Throw on an old Other Half T-shirt for $4 off flights on Saturday’s OHB Spirit Day, and get a $5 pint of hazy Varsity Greens IPA for wearing any sports jersey on Sunday. Through Sunday. Free admission .

Taylor Swift Trivia at Honor Brewing

Honor’s Sterling taproom and production facility hosts a monthly themed trivia night, and this month is all about Taylor Swift. Prizes are awarded for the top three teams. Arrive early for happy hour, which includes $10 flights, $5 wines and $1 off pints. 7 p.m. Free .

Friday, April 26

Georgetown French Market

If a trip to Paris isn’t in the cards this spring, the Georgetown French Market should be on any Francophile’s calendar. This annual sidewalk sale happens on Wisconsin Avenue NW between O Street and Reservoir Road, and up and down the surrounding streets, with more than 40 local businesses participating in the fun. Browse pop-up outdoor book sales, take 10 percent off French wine at Bacchus Wine Cellar, get a grilled merguez sausage from Patisserie Poupon, and listen to live music or watch street performers, including a mime and a unicyclist. Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Free .

Spring Open Doors at Spanish Cultural Center

Explore the latest indoor and outdoor art installations at the Beaux-Arts mansion that used to house the Spanish ambassadors. Inside, you’ll find “SPAINfographics,” which details the relationship between Spain and the United States through the work of infographic artists, and “Not Your Regular Wall,” an returning exhibit that, in this edition, is inspired by Spanish scientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal. Outside, one exhibit re-creates iconic photos of male leaders with images of women, and another explores the idea of “returning to the outside world.” Note that a reservation does not guarantee admission. Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Free.

Saturday, April 27

Petworth PorchFest

All the neighborhood is a stage in Petworth this weekend. More than 100 hosts open their porches, stoops and front lawns to almost 300 musical acts between 2 and 6 p.m. Some you might have heard of, such as the jazz-punk fusion of the Messthetics, the lush pop of Ari Voxx or the groovy synth-pop of Wrizzards. Many of them you have not. But that’s missing the point of this massive festival, which stretches almost two miles from north to south but still feels like a block party. The main stage, which hosts music from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Petworth Recreation Center, is a handy starting point, but the best part is meeting up with friends and following your ears through the streets, where you’ll hear jazz, hip-hop duos, bluegrass pickers, mariachis, DJs spinning house and dad bands knocking out classic rock covers. If one address is too crowded or you lose interest, there’s another show around the corner (or sometimes just a few houses away). Bring a hat, because you’ll spend a lot of time standing on the sidewalk, and pack food and drinks. 2 to 8 p.m. Free .

Do the Loop

When most folks talk about museum hopping in D.C., they’re referring to visiting multiple Smithsonians on the Mall, or maybe browsing the galleries and historic houses near Dupont Circle. There’s a much more ambitious schedule at the second Do the Loop day, which brings together seven institutions west of Rock Creek, including the Kreeger Museum in Foxhall, American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center in Tenleytown and Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown. (The Jackson Art Center, Addison/Ripley Fine Art, Georgetown University Art Galleries and Klagsbrun Studios, which are also participating, are clustered near one another in Georgetown.) Each location offers something different: tours of Dumbarton’s gardens and museum; sculpture garden tours and food trucks at the Kreeger; guided gallery tours with journalist and artist Bob Schieffer at Katzen. Scavenger hunts and hands-on activities for children are offered throughout the day. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., though individual location hours vary. Free .

Carousel Day at Glen Echo Park

Saturday is an exciting day for children of all ages: Glen Echo Park’s 103-year-old Dentzel Carousel opens for yet another season. Riders can claim their favorite animal — a galloping ostrich, bounding hare, majestic lion — while the gorgeously restored carousel spins to the waltzing tunes of a 1926 Wurlitzer band organ. Each trip is $2, making a $5 unlimited day pass a great deal. But there’s more to do than go up and down, around and around: The day’s activities include free music and dance performances, hands-on crafts, dance classes, and open art studios. (Some events in the park that day, such as performances of “Alice in Wonderland” at the Puppet Co., charge a fee.) 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission; carousel rides $2 each or $5 for an all-day pass.

Project Glow at the RFK Festival Grounds

The third annual Project Glow turns the grounds around the abandoned RFK Stadium into an EDM wonderland. Performances from Chicago house legend Derrick Carter, dance-pop hitmaker Zedd, and creative back-to-back pairings like upstart Acraze and genre-hopper Wax Motif should keep the rave going, as will sets by DMV favorites including Baronhawk Poitier, Mathias, Thablackgod and others. Let’s hope the weather prevents DJs from shaking the windows of residents miles away. Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 11 p.m. $109-$279 .

Independent Bookstore Day

The American Booksellers Association is celebrating its 11th Independent Bookstore Day, which means discounts, parties and more for D.C.-area book fans. Kramers in Dupont Circle has two promotions: Find a golden ticket hidden in the store for a 20 percent discount, or get a free “blind date with a book” for every $75 spent ( 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Free ). East City Bookshop on Capitol Hill (which is also celebrating its eighth anniversary) is offering 10, 20 and 30 percent discounts at random throughout the day, plus chances to win a curated tote of advanced reader copies or a year of free audiobooks ( 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Free ). If choosing only one store to spend your Independent Bookstore Day perusing is just too much pressure, consider joining the D.C. Bookstore Crawl , where hitting five out of 19 locations will get you a prize — or hit all 19 to enter a raffle for a grand prize. Stops include Big Planet Comics, Lost City Books, Politics and Prose, and the Potter’s House ( 10 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday. Free ).

D.C. Cocktail Festival at Union Market

Bartenders from popular D.C. bars and restaurants like Compass Rose, Bar Chinois, the Doyle and the Wells come together to pour drinks at the D.C. Cocktail Festival, held at Union Market’s event space Dock 5. Tickets offer the chance to taste samples of all 15 cocktails, so pace yourself accordingly. This day-drinking event is divided into two sessions: The first begins at noon for VIP ticket holders and 1 p.m. for general admission, with the party ending at 3 p.m. The second session begins at 3:30 p.m. for VIP and 4 p.m. for general admission, and ends at 6:30. Noon to 6:30 p.m. $39-$59 .

Plant sale at the National Arboretum

Find the perfect perennial or just pick up pots and planters at the annual plant sale hosted by the Friends of the National Arboretum. Because this is the National Arboretum, the selection can be more impressive than at other garden events around town. ( Check out the website for the exact list of flowers, shrubs, succulents, conifers and other plants available for purchase.) But there’s more to do than stock up your yard: Take a class on the role of raised beds in urban gardens; visit the ARTboretum for family activities, such as face painting and games; and browse the vendor village tables, full of garden supplies, fine art, clothing and jewelry from local makers. Food trucks and local companies are on hand with refreshments. The plant sale tent is members-only until 11 a.m., but other activities are open to the public during that time. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free; pay-what-you-can for the gardening class .

Maryland Day at the University of Maryland

Throughout the Free State, March 25 is celebrated as Maryland Day, which commemorates the arrival of English colonists in 1634. But in College Park, Maryland Day is something else: a celebration of the state’s flagship university, when the campus opens its doors to the surrounding community, alumni or not. There are more than 400 activities taking place, from the football team’s spring game to an insect petting zoo. (“Imagine tarantulas, exotic insects, scorpions, bees and millipedes longer than your hand for you to look at and touch.”) Try making 3D art, conduct surgery with robots, listen to musical performances, explore rare books or sample ice cream from the Maryland Dairy. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free .

Reopening of the Metropolitan Beer Trail

The ever-popular bar-and-brewery crawl along the Metropolitan Branch Trail officially reopens for business this weekend. Visit 11 stops, including breweries Lost Generation, Red Bear and Right Proper, or beer gardens, such as Metrobar and Wunder Garten, to earn points that can be redeemed for T-shirts, baseball caps and other prizes. (The person who checks in the most times by the end of December wins a $25 gift card for each of the participating businesses.) The trail is just over two miles long, but you don’t have to complete it in one day. Through Dec. 31. Hours vary. Free to participate .

‘The Lord of the Rings’ at the National Building Museum

The National Building Museum’s “Great Movies in the Great Hall” is like bringing your favorite summer movie series indoors. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, complete with a picnic, to spread out on the carpet in one of the city’s most impressive indoor spaces, among the soaring Corinthian columns. Before “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” screens, J.R.R. Tolkien researcher Joey Wilson-Brooke presents a virtual program about the role of architecture and design in the books and on-screen. Costumes are encouraged. Popcorn and beverages are available for purchase. (No outside alcohol is allowed.) Doors at 6:30 p.m. $5-$15; free for children younger than 12 .

STAR Fest at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library

The STAR Fest — that stands for “ Sing, Talk and Read ” — is an in-person offshoot of D.C.’s Books From Birth program. Bring little ones for a day of story times, soft play activities, musical performances by children’s entertainers and an area that lets children imagine their own stories. This event is designed for children younger than 5. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free .

Cultural Arts Festival at Creative Suitland

Poets, musicians, dance companies and theater are all featured at this afternoon festival, including Prince George’s County Poet Laureate Khadijah Ali-Coleman. A vendor market spotlights local designers of jewelry, soaps and home decor, as well as food trucks. 2 to 7 p.m. Free .

Purcellville Music and Arts Festival

Multiple stages of music, dance and entertainment are featured at the Purcellville Music and Arts Festival, set in the historic downtown area. Attractions include a show with more than 30 artists in the Bush Tabernacle Skating Rink, a market with local makers and food vendors, and family activities such as T-shirt painting and glitter tattoos. Justin Trawick and the Common Good and the Rowdy Ace Band are among the performers in Fireman’s Field Park. Dogs, lawn chairs and tents are welcome. Noon to 7 p.m. Free .

Broadway Rave at 9:30 Club

Move over, Taylor Swift-themed dance nights, because there’s a new and very niche singalong party in town. Broadway Rave advertises itself as a “traveling dance party for adult theater kids,” with musical standards on the playlist and surprise guest appearances from the stars of Broadway shows. The D.C. edition is landing at 9:30 Club, and you’re encouraged to show up dressed as your favorite Broadway character. We’re guessing the costumes will be truly extra. 10 p.m. $20 .

D.C. Chocolate Festival at the French Embassy

Returning for a seventh year, this festival is a celebration of all things chocolate — education, confection and, of course, sampling. Taste and shop in the main exhibit or check out classes and workshops throughout the day on topics like chocolate and beverage pairings and the chocolate economy. There are also non-chocolate foods and beverages in case your sweet tooth falls out. 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 2 to 5:30 p.m. $25; free for children under 12.

Sunday, April 28

Make It Mount Pleasant! Spring Arts and Crafts Market

Support local artists at the Make It Mount Pleasant! Spring Arts and Crafts Market, which turns Mount Pleasant Street NW into an open-air gallery for more than 50 artists who live in the neighborhood and across Northwest Washington. The Mount Pleasant Artists Collective and Mount Pleasant Main Street host the Sunday market, where you’ll be able to purchase paintings, jewelry, pottery, photography, fabric arts and other crafts. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free .

Vintage Vineyard at St. Vincent

Check out nine local vendors curated by Vintage Vineyard in a pop-up at St. Vincent Wine’s garden. Shop thrift finds while drinking discounted wine ($10 per glass, or 25 percent off bottles) and listening to live jazz between 3 and 5 p.m. Noon to 6 p.m. Free.

Catalina Wine Mixer at Lulu’s Winegarden

Find your new favorite warm-weather sips at this wine tasting at the U Street wine bar, which features two unlimited samples of more than two dozen West Coast wines — roses, “chillable reds,” sparking whites — paired with breakfast tacos during two 90-minute sessions. Tickets include the option to purchase discounted wines to take home. Noon to 1:30 p.m. and 2 to 3:30 p.m. $55 .

‘Glacier: A Climate Change Ballet’ at the National Portrait Gallery

Dancers mimic the movements of melting polar ice caps, pretending to ripple, crack and plunge as they maneuver through the National Portrait Gallery’s Kogod Courtyard during a free performance of Moveius Contemporary Ballet’s “Glacier: A Climate Change Ballet.” This work is created by Diana Movius, who works as a climate policy expert while also serving as the founder and artistic director of this D.C.-based ballet company. 4 to 4:45 p.m. Free .

Ellington at 125: The D.C. Collective in Concert at Arena Stage

Hosted by the D.C. Jazz Festival, artist-in-residence and bassist Corcoran Holt’s contribution to the months-long celebration of Duke Ellington’s 125th birthday includes a concert in tribute to his mentor, Davey Yarborough, former dean of instrumental music at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. 4 to 5:30 p.m. $25-$45.

Spring Fest at Calico

The hip Blagden Alley spot is bringing, for the second year, a spring festival to its multilevel 3,000-square-foot yard. Make a paper flower kit or create your own faux-floral bouquets, try new seasonal cocktails and dishes, or grab a bit from popcorn pop-up Zing Pop. 1 to 10 p.m. Free.

Willie’s 91st Birthday Fiesta at Republic Cantina

The incomparable Willie Nelson turns 91 on Monday, and Tex-Mex hot spot Republic Cantina is honoring one of Texas’s favorite sons during an afternoon party. Listen to tribute sets from D.C.’s Human Country Jukebox while snacking on tacos and sipping margaritas and $5 Shiner Bocks. (If you lean toward the latter, there’s a special Willie-themed koozie, too.) 3 to 6 p.m. Free; admission and seating are first-come, first-served .

Youth Invasion at the Atlas Performing Arts Center

GenOUT Youth Chorus, the ensemble of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington D.C. for singers age 13 to 18, teams up with the chorus from Jackson-Reed High School for an afternoon of songs such as “The Rainbow Connection” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’” in the Atlas’s Lang Theatre. 4 p.m. Free; reservation required .

Tuesday, April 30

Slash Run Ninth Anniversary Party

Mark nine years of loud rock shows, creative burgers and whiskey shots in Petworth with a special edition of Slash Run’s Hot Nights Karaoke. Show up early (between 5 and 7 p.m.) for happy hour with $2 off drafts before the singing starts. 8 p.m. Free .

Wednesday, May 1

Jacob Collier at the Anthem

At his live shows, Collier creates his own orchestra of audience members. (His mother, Suzie Collier, is a violinist, conductor and professor at the Royal Academy of Music.) He conducts thousands of fans as a giant instrument, siphoning different melodies from each corner of the venue like a massive human organ. The audience choir became the centerpiece of “Djesse Vol. 4,” released in February, as the last in a quartet of albums that explore diverse soundscapes. Grand, sprawling and entirely genre-less, it’s heralded by an even more diverse list of credits, including Paul Simon, John Mayer, Lizzy McAlpine, Shawn Mendes, Lawrence and Brandi Carlile. Between Morse code, ambient animal sounds and dozens of languages, it also features the 100,000 voices of audience choirs Collier has conducted on his tours. 7:15 p.m. $50-$70.

NMWA Nights tickets on sale

The monthly after-hours parties at the National Museum of Women in the Arts tend to sell out so quickly that we don’t get to write about them. So here’s your reminder to plan ahead: If you want to attend the May 15 event, celebrating the exhibition “New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024” with DJs, a performance by Pretty Boi Drag, a costume contest and art-making activities, tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Prices include two cocktails or mocktails. 5:30 p.m. $22-$25 .

Few foods can credibly whisk eaters to a Parisian sidewalk café. But the best croissants immediately call up memories of devouring a morning pain au chocolat with cafe au lait , a foreign treat so good it leaves the customer blissfully unaware of a haughty waiter's disdain. The D.C. area has seen a boon in outstanding bread and pastry in the past few years — and that includes places turning out quality croissants. Some spots, like Bread Furst , stick to impeccably-done classics like plain, almond, or chocolate croissants. Others, like Sidekick , roll out modern, whimsical fare stuffed with matcha cream or potato chips. Here are some of the best bakeries and restaurants that offer the flaky, buttery pastry.

Sunday Morning Bakehouse

This chic North Bethesda jewel focuses on crafting quality, small-batch croissants and other pastries. Their croissant menu covers savory and sweet, ranging from a stuffed ham and Swiss cheese to traditional butter, chocolate, and matcha green tea, varieties (plus cruffins).
